Impact of the digital transformation of Chinese new energy vehicle enterprises on innovation performance

Digital transformation involves fundamental changes in business models, organizational structure, corporate culture, and even the way in which customers interact. Chinese new energy vehicle companies hope to achieve faster response speeds, greater operational efficiency, and better user experiences through digital transformation. Therefore, exploring how to successfully carry out digital transformation and its true impact on enterprise performance is of profound significance. The digital transformation of enterprises requires the embedding and absorption of network relationships to acquire and transform external resources and technologies, which further affects the innovation performance of these enterprises. This article introduces absorptive capacity as a mediating variable and network embeddedness as a moderating variable to construct a theoretical model, attempting to elucidate the mechanism of the impact of digital transformation on enterprise innovation performance. By combining theoretical and empirical analysis, the research hypotheses are tested, and the results show that 1. digital transformation (digital technology, digital products, and digital platforms) has a positive impact on enterprise innovation performance, 2. absorptive capacity plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between digital transformation and enterprise innovation performance, and 3. the embeddedness of network relationships has a significant positive moderating effect on the digital transformation of enterprises and their innovation performance. This article delves into an effective approach involving digital transformation, absorptive capacity, and enterprise innovation performance; analyses the moderating effect of network embeddedness; and concludes that the research findings have implications for the development of related research on digital transformation and enterprise innovation. The timely activities of enterprises to effectively carry out digital transformation, as well as the formulation of relevant policies, have positive significance.

Impact of cross-border mergers and acquisitions on firm innovation performance: from the perspective of dynamic capability theory

ABSTRACT This study constructs an empirical framework from the perspective of dynamic capability theory, and uses a combined dataset of Chinese listed companies from 2008 to 2020 to test the causal impact of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) on firm innovation performance by using propensity score matching, time-varying difference-in-differences model and instrumental variable method. The findings are as follows: (1) Cross-border M&A has a significant promoting effect on the innovation performance of acquiring firms. (2) Heterogeneity analysis shows that traditionally less innovative state-owned, non-manufacturing, and non-high-tech enterprises experience notable enhancements in their performance through cross-border M&As. The post-M&A innovation performance of enterprises in central China is strong, followed by enterprises in eastern China, while enterprises in western China show limited improvement. (3) Among the internal factors of firm dynamic capability, knowledge breadth and managerial capability positively moderate the impact of cross-border M&As on innovation performance, while knowledge depth and financing constraints play a negative moderating role. (4) Among the external factors of firm dynamic capability, local knowledge externalities and regional trade resilience play a positive moderating role. This study highlights the importance of firm dynamic capabilities in the cross-border M&As process and provides new insights into innovation strategies in emerging economies.

Research on the Impact of CEO Gender Differences on Green Innovation Performance

Green innovation is a crucial strategic measure for the construction of ecological civilization, promoting high-quality development, and achieving modernization with Chinese characteristics. Based on data from Chinese A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2021, this study explores the impact mechanism of CEO gender differences on green innovation from the perspective of CEO individual characteristics. The results show that CEO gender differences inhibit the green innovation performance of enterprises. A test of the mediating effect found that R&D investment plays a partial mediating role between CEO gender differences and green innovation performance.

The Impact of Data Elements on Enterprises’ Capital Market Performance: Insights from Stock Liquidity in China and Implications for Global Markets

Amidst a backdrop of global economic challenges and shifting market dynamics, this study highlights the transformative role of data elements in enhancing enterprise performance within capital markets, particularly focusing on China’s leading position in the digital economy as a model with implications for global markets. This study utilized a panel data set consisting of 10,493 observations from 2687 listed enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares from 2015 to 2023. An econometric analysis was conducted using a two-way fixed effects model to explore the impact of enterprise data elements on capital market performance in the digital economy and its underlying mechanisms. The research reveals that the digitization of enterprise production factors can significantly enhance performance in the capital market. The study further suggests that enterprise innovation and enterprise value play a crucial role in mediating this effect. This paper introduces a new concept called “data elements”, which expands the definition and assessment methods of enterprise data capabilities. It goes beyond just digital transformation at the application level and includes data governance at the basic ability level. This approach provides a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the different elements of data. Moreover, the research expands the research scope of microeconomic entities’ economic benefits, thereby extending the value contributed by enterprise data elements to their performance in the capital market. Additionally, this study reveals the relationship between enterprise data elementization and capital market performance through intermediary analysis of enterprise innovation performance and enterprise value, which unveils the “black box” and clarifies the transmission pathway. The findings of this research hold considerable theoretical value and have far-reaching practical implications for government policies concerning data elements and the development of high-quality enterprises, suggesting pathways for global markets to leverage data for enhanced enterprise performance and economic resilience. The results are particularly useful for policymakers, enterprise managers, and scholars in understanding and implementing data-driven strategies in capital markets.

This paper selects Chinese A-share-listed manufacturing enterprises as a sample from 2012–2022 to empirically analyse the relationship between supply chain concentration and corporate innovation performance. It is found that there is a significant negative correlation between supplier concentration and corporate innovation and a significant positive correlation between customer concentration and corporate innovation; industry concentration enhances the positive impact of customer concentration on corporate innovation performance; compared with state-owned enterprises, the relationship between supply chain concentration and corporate innovation performance is more significant in private enterprises.

Research on the impact of industrial innovation determinants in China

ABSTRACT China's industries have been positioned at lower and mid-range of the global industrial chain. On the basis of the latest China Economic Census, the effects of external technology acquisition and internal research and development (R&D) efforts on the innovation performance of Chinese industrial enterprises are examined. The results demonstrate that the levels of R&D intensity, patent output and innovation capability of Chinese industrial enterprises are still very low. Independent R&D has become the most vital source of technological innovation. External technology acquisition significantly inhibits the impact of internal R&D on patent production. In addition, the critical role of independent R&D in the innovation performance of Chinese industrial enterprises is confirmed. This study is of theoretical value and practical significance for promoting the industrial innovation advantages, accelerating the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy and upgrading industrial structure.

Technological diversification and innovation performance: the moderating effects of organizational slack and ownership in Chinese listed firms

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the impact of technological diversification (TD) on enterprise innovation performance, meanwhile focusing on the moderating effects of various organizational slack (i.e. absorbed and unabsorbed slack) and ownership types (i.e. state-owned or privately-owned) in the context of Chinese listed firms.Design/methodology/approachThis study formulates five hypotheses based on organization and agency theories. Our empirical analysis employs a fixed-effect regression estimator with a unique panel dataset of Chinese-listed manufacturing firms and 13,566 firm-year observations over 9 years from 2012 to 2020.FindingsOur findings show that an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between TD and innovation performance, varying with different types of organizational slack and ownership. In state-owned enterprises (SOEs), unabsorbed slack negatively moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship; however, in privately-owned enterprises (POEs), this relationship is positively moderated. Although absorbed slack has negative moderating effects in both SOEs and POEs, its impact is only significant for POEs.Practical implicationsOur results imply that organizational slack has a contrasting impact on the relationship between TD and innovation performance when the type of ownership varies. Therefore, the managers that intend to achieve optimal innovation performance through TD should understand how organizational slack can be leveraged.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by applying the relationship between TD and innovative performance to the transition economy, as well as examining the double-edged sword impact of state ownership on firm innovation performance.

Digital transformation in supply chains: Assessing the spillover effects on midstream firm innovation

Amidst rapidly evolving market conditions, relying solely on internal information and knowledge for innovation has proven inadequate. The emergence of the digital economy injected renewed vitality into enterprise innovation. However, existing studies have predominantly concentrated on the digital transformation intrinsic to enterprises, neglecting the impact of partners' digital transition on enterprises’ innovation performance. From the perspective of supply chain spillovers, this study evaluates the influence of digital transitions in upstream and downstream enterprises on the innovation activities of midstream enterprises. The results show that the digital transformation of enterprises within the supply chain exhibits a transmission effect, and the digital transformation of upstream and downstream enterprises significantly promotes the innovation performance of midstream enterprises. The mechanistic analysis revealed that the digital transformation of upstream and downstream enterprises mainly enhances the resilience of the supply chain by improving its efficiency, optimizing the match between supply and demand, and stabilizing the relationship between supply and demand, thus promoting the innovation level of midstream enterprises. Further analysis shows that improvements in the innovation output of midstream enterprises are reflected in the quality of innovation. When the upstream and downstream firms belong to the same industry, the supply chain spillover effect of digital transformation is more evident, and simultaneously, the digital collaboration of the supply chain can promote the innovation of midstream enterprises.

KEY FACTORS OF PROMOTING INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCE IN AGRIBUSINESS SMEs: PROJECT AN EMPIRICAL METHOD

The main goal of the research is to determine the effects of the selected factors (organization culture, organization learning, market orientation and innovation culture) on the innovation performance of small and medium-sized enterprises in agribusiness. The Structural Equation Modeling method was used to test the research hypotheses. The results showed that the selected factors are significant determinants of innovative performance. In addition, the relationship between organizational culture and innovation performance, as well as organizational learning and innovation performance, was found to be fully mediated, and the relationship between market orientation and innovation performance was found to be partially mediated by innovation culture. Small and medium-sized businesses should be empowered in the globalized and fiercely competitive market of today by fostering product innovation, investing in the development of human resources and technology, and broadening their market reach. These initiatives are essential to enhancing their marketing plans and successfully taking on competitors.

THE IMPACT OF CORPORATE SOCIAL NETWORK ON INNOVATION PERFORMANCE - THE CHAIN MEDIATION EFFECT BASED ON KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION AND ABSORPTIVE CAPACITY

Innovation is the lifeblood and inexhaustible driving force behind the development of an enterprise. With the continuous improvement of scientific and technological levels, the acceleration of technological change, and the changes in market demand, the complexity and uncertainty of innovation are increasing day by day. Enterprises have to acquire knowledge from outside, to obtain new impetus for enterprise development. The rich knowledge resources contained in corporate social networks provide a foundation for future innovation and development. This article takes Chinese enterprises as the research object and uses open innovation theory, social network theory, and knowledge management theory to construct a conceptual model of "social network-knowledge acquisition-absorptive capacity-innovation performance." Through empirical analysis of 549 valid questionnaires, it was found that networks do not all have a positive effect on enterprise innovation performance. This study shows that network size, network centrality, and network heterogeneity have a positive effect on innovation performance. The effect of network relationship strength on innovation performance is not significant. Knowledge acquisition and absorptive capacity play an important role in society. Network size, network centrality, and network heterogeneity have a chain-mediating role in their impact on corporate innovation performance.

Government R&D Subsidies and Firms' Innovation Performance: Empirical Evidence Based on Listed Companies in the New Energy Industry

At present, China is actively changing the original energy consumption structure, reducing the use of traditional fossil energy and vigorously promoting the green development of new energy. To stimulate technological innovation and promote economic growth is the direction and principle of the current industrial policy, and to increase the investment of R&D funds and enhance the independent innovation ability is the way to accelerate the construction of China's core competitive strength, so it is necessary to scientifically assess the impact of government R&D subsidies on the innovation performance of enterprises. The government's investment of R&D funds also plays an important role in the new energy industry, which is characterized by technological innovation, government R&D funding also plays an important role in the new energy industry characterized by technological innovation. In this paper, we select the panel data of listed companies in the new energy industry from 2006 to 2020 as the research object to empirically analyze the relationship between government R&D subsidies and corporate innovation performance. Based on the results of benchmark regression in this paper, the overall results show that government R&D subsidies are conducive to the improvement of corporate innovation performance in the new energy industry. This study aims to explore the effect of government R&D subsidies on enterprise innovation performance and put forward feasible suggestions to understand the role of government subsidies in the process of enterprise R&D and innovation activities from a deeper perspective.

Intellectual property protection and enterprise innovation: Evidence from China

In this paper, we introduce a conceptual framework to scrutinize the non-linear correlation between intellectual property protection and enterprise innovation performance using panel data (2012–2020) from listed firms. The results exhibit an inverted U-shaped relationship of IPP on EIP. Our analysis underscores the important role of R&D intensity and disclosure quality in this relation, identifying them as potential transmission channels for IPP's effect on EIP. Furthermore, empirical evidence suggests that when companies are state-owned or located in innovative pilot cities, the inverse U-shaped relationship becomes more pronounced. Conversely, this relationship is significantly weakened in markets with lower levels of competition.

Effects of environmental awareness training and environmental commitment on firm's green innovation performance: Empirical insights from medical equipment suppliers.

In recent years, the intensification of global industrialization coupled with the enterprise's production and operating activities have caused pollution, increasing the current environmental pressure. Relevant government departments in China have instituted several stringent measures (environmental protection sensitization and awareness activities, training sessions, and exchange activities targeted towards enterprise managers) to address these rising environmental problems. Though these measures have gained traction over the years, there is a dearth of research on their effectiveness on the green innovation performance of enterprises. To bridge the gap, this research explores the effect of environmental awareness training, knowledge exchange activities, and commitment on green innovation performance with survey data from 285 medical equipment manufacturing companies in China. It further expands the theoretical application of environmental awareness training, commitment, and innovation performance from the lens of the Knowledge-Based View. The findings depict a positive relationship between environmental awareness training and innovation performance. It also finds a mediating influence of environmental commitment in the relationship between environmental awareness training and green innovation performance. Furthermore, environmental knowledge exchange activities positively moderate the relationship between environmental awareness training and environmental commitment. These findings offer valuable insights for the green development of medical equipment manufacturing enterprises and the government to formulate environmental protection policies.

Digital transformation and green innovation are powerful initiatives to achieve carbon peaking, carbon neutrality targets and high-quality economic development. Using a sample of high energy-consuming listed enterprises from 2012 to 2021, a double fixed-effect model is constructed to verify the effect of green innovation on the carbon emission reduction performance of high energy-consuming enterprises, and digital transformation is used as a moderating variable to analyze the inner mechanism of green innovation affecting the carbon emission reduction performance of high energy-consuming enterprises under the effect of digital transformation. The empirical results show that green innovation can significantly improve the carbon emission reduction performance of energy-consuming enterprises, while digital transformation positively moderates the effect of green innovation on the carbon emission reduction performance of energy-consuming enterprises. When considering the industry heterogeneity, the moderation effect of digital transformation is significant in the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry and the electricity and heat production and supply industry, but the petroleum processing and coking and nuclear fuel processing industry, the non-metallic mineral products industry, the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry and the non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry are not yet significantly affected by green innovation and digital transformation. The findings of the study provide empirical evidence to promote the improvement of carbon emission reduction performance of energy-intensive enterprises in China and to achieve the "double carbon" target.

Does environmental regulation pressure induce the green innovation of enterprises? Quasi-natural experiment of China's air pollution prevention and control action plan

ABSTRACT Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) is one of the most influential command-and-control environmental regulations (CMC) in China. Whether it can promote the green innovation performance of enterprises remains unclear. Based on the ‘Green Patent List’ issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Chinese listed companies’ data, this paper applies the quasi-natural experiment methods of the difference-in-differences model and difference-in-difference-in-differences model to identify the impact of environmental regulation pressure on the green innovation of enterprises. The study finds that implementing the APPCAP promotes the enterprises’ green innovation performance in quantity and quality. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the green innovation effect of APPCAP is more obvious for those samples in the eastern region, with features of capital-intensive, labour-intensive, and low market concentration. Furthermore, our findings further support the weak version of the Porter hypothesis (PH), Whose path is that the implementation of APPCAP induces enterprises’ green innovation by promoting their innovation investment. These findings provide policy implications for the coordination of environmental regulation and green transformation in pursuit of the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

Can Digital Transformation Promote Service Innovation Performance of Construction Enterprises? The Mediating Role of Dual Innovation

With the ongoing intensification of VUCA environment, enhancing service innovation performance has become a crucial choice for enterprises striving for sustainable development. The emergence of digital transformation offers construction enterprises an opportunity to bolster their service innovation performance. However, effectively leveraging digital transformation for this purpose remains a formidable challenge. Therefore, this study proposes a theoretical model from the perspective of Resource-Based View, named “Digital Transformation-Dual Innovation-Service Innovation Performance”, to explore the impact of digital transformation on the service innovation performance of construction enterprises. This model proposes the impact path of digital transformation on service innovation performance, as well as a mediating role of dual innovation in this relationship. A questionnaire was designed and administered in China for collecting 291 valid responses. An analysis revealed that digital transformation exerts a positive impact on both dual innovation and service innovation performance, with the former proving to be more significant. Furthermore, dual innovation not only significantly enhances service innovation performance but also serves as a partial mediator between digital transformation and service innovation performance. The findings of this research clarify the internal mechanism by which digital transformation empowers service innovation in construction enterprises, offering insights for enhancing service innovation performance and achieving sustainable development.

Interpersonal Factors on Enterprises' Innovation Performance

In the current economic society, innovation is not only the key to the sustainable development of many enterprises, but also an imperative in the development of the country. The way to improve the innovation performance of enterprises this issue is now a lot of enterprises are very concerned about. All major companies want to understand the different impacts it brings to business management. Therefore, this paper starts from the four dimensions of ambidextrous leadership, paradoxical leadership, heterogeneity of top management team and stability of top management team to explore the impact of interpersonal factors on innovation performance. It is found that ambidextrous leadership and paradoxical leadership have a positive impact on the innovation performance of enterprises; the stability of the top management team always has a positive impact on the innovation performance of enterprises; and the heterogeneity of the top management team has different impacts on the innovation performance of enterprises according to different heterogeneous situations.
