Introduction : The aim of this article is to present a synthesis of the injury surveillance studies during the Summer Olympic Games from 2008 to 2021.Methods : During each of the 4 Summer Olympic Games from 2008 to 2021, the IOC implemented the same research methodology that was published by Junge et al. in 2008, which consists of the recording by the medical teams of each country and the local organizing committee of all new injuries on a standardized form.Results : During these four studies on the Summer Olympic Games, 1) the injury incidence rate was approximately 10 injuries per 100 registered athletes, with little variation between the Olympic Games, 2) the injury incidence rate was variable between sports with some sports more traumatic than others, and 3) injuries were mainly located at the thigh, knee and ankle, and mainly affecting ligaments, skin and muscles.Conclusion : This collection of injuries set up for the IOC during the Summer Olympic Games from 2008 to 2021, following an identical methodology each time, now provides detailed knowledge of the epidemiology of injuries during the Summer Olympic Games, which allows both to anticipate medical services and the preparation of medical teams, and to develop adapted prevention strategies.
