Objective To observe the clinical characteristics and preventive methods of ocular trauma in mountainous area of Northwest Guangxi.Methods The medical records of 1386 cases of hospialized ocular trauma in mountainous area of Northwest Guangxi from May 1995 to March 2013 were retrospectively analyzed.Results Patients hospialized for ocular trauma accounted for 15.46% of patients in Department of Ophthalmology.Within the patients,1108 cases (1152 eyes) were males and 278 cases (302 eyes) were females,yielding a male-to-female ratio of 3.98.The frequencies of left eye injuries were higher than right eye.The most common patients were farmers and workers,followed by teenagers and preschoolers.The mean ages were (26.3 ± 3.6) years old.The injury types and causative agents were complex.The animal-related ocular trauma in kids always had poor visual outcome.Conclusion Timely treatment and transfer to the superior hospitals are the key points for rescuing the vison of ocular trauma in rural mountainous area.Strengthening education regarding injury prevention and applying of prevention strategies can reduce the rate of eye injuries.
