Plate tectonic–like cycles since the Hadean: Initiated or inherited?

Abstract Interpretation of Earth's oldest preserved crustal archive, the Jack Hills zircon of Western Australia, has been controversial in terms of the onset of plate tectonics. We conduct time-series analysis on hafnium isotopes of the Jack Hills zircon and reveal an array of statistically significant cycles that are reminiscent of plate-tectonic subduction. At face value, such cycles may suggest early Earth conditions similar to those of today—the uniformitarian hypothesis that plate tectonics was essentially operational since “day one”. On the other hand, in the context of expected secular changes due to planetary evolution and geological observations, the cycles could instead imply that modern plate-tectonic subduction inherited mantle convective harmonics already facilitated by an early phase of stagnant-lid delamination—the “lid-to-plates” hypothesis. Either way, any model for the nature of plate tectonics must incorporate conditions operating during Hadean time, either by initiation of plate tectonics then or by later inheritance of preexisting cycles of mantle convection.

Structural and chemical complexity of minerals: an update

AbstractThe complexities of chemical composition and crystal structure are fundamental characteristics of minerals that have high relevance to the understanding of their stability, occurrence and evolution. This review summarises recent developments in the field of mineral complexity and outlines possible directions for its future elaboration. The database of structural and chemical complexity parameters of minerals is updated by H-correction of structures with unknown H positions and the inclusion of new data. The revised average complexity values (arithmetic means) for all minerals are 3.54(2) bits/atom and 345(10) bits/cell (based upon 4443 structure reports). The distributions of atomic information amounts, chemIG and strIG, versus the number of mineral species fit the normal modes, whereas the distributions of total complexities, chemIG,total and strIG,total, along with numbers of atoms per formula and per unit cell are log normal. The three most complex mineral species known today are ewingite, morrisonite and ilmajokite, all either discovered or structurally characterised within the last five years. The most important complexity-generating mechanisms in minerals are: (1) the presence of isolated large clusters; (2) the presence of large clusters linked together to form three-dimensional frameworks; (3) formation of complex three-dimensional modular frameworks; (4) formation of complex modular layers; (5) high hydration state in salts with complex heteropolyhedral units; and (6) formation of ordered superstructures of relatively simple structure types. The relations between symmetry and complexity are considered. The analysis of temporal dynamics of mineralogical discoveries since 1875 with the step of 25 years show the increasing chemical and structural complexities of human knowledge of the mineral kingdom in the history of mineralogy. In the Earth's history, both diversity and complexity of minerals experience dramatic increases associated with the formation of Earth's continental crust, initiation of plate tectonics and the Great Oxidation event.

The effect of seamount chain subduction and accretion

Seamount chains (oceanic plateaus, submarine ridges) are unique morphologic features on the seafloor, which resulted from the motion of the lithosphere over a convective plume. Seamount chains are being carried along by plate motions, which are eventually subducted beneath continental/oceanic plates or accreted in the accretionary complex, thus causing a series of effects in the convergent margin. In this paper, we briefly review the distribution and features of the typical modern seamount chains, including Hawaiian‐Emperor and Louisville seamount chains, Cocos, Ninetyeast and Caroline ridges, and Ogasawara Plateau, and mainly focus on the effects of seamount chains subduction and accretion. The geological effects mainly include the following: (1) deformation and tectonic erosion of the overriding plate; (2) flat‐slab subduction in the convergent margin; (3) growth of continental crust through time; (4) subduction initiation of plate tectonics; (5) generation of large earthquakes; (6) magmatism of the volcanic arc; and (7) formation of porphyry copper and gold deposits. The subduction of seamount chains resulted in similar effects in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) which is one of the largest and longest‐lived accretionary orogens on Earth. However, there are still many aspects that need further improvements, such as identification of the seamounts in the geological record, and geodynamic effects of subducted seamount chains. A detailed study on these sides of the seamount chains will enable us to further understand the tectonic evolution and metallogenesis of the CAOB, especially in accretionary orogenesis, continental crust growth, and subduction initiation dynamics.

Late Neoarchean high-grade regional metamorphism in the eastern North China Craton: New constraints from monazite dating in northern Liaoning

Late Neoarchean tectono-thermal events in the eastern North China Craton have been comprehensively characterized in terms of mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, metamorphic evolution, geophysics and geochronology. The Late Neoarchean metamorphic event is debated to correlate with vertical and/or horizontal tectonism, potentially an indicator as initiation of plate tectonics. With a growing number of zircon geochronological investigations, the precise timing of the Late Neoarchean metamorphic event should be questioned due to the complexity of post-Archean multiple tectono-thermal overprints. Here we demonstrate the capabilities of LA–ICP–MS U–Pb and LA–MC–ICP–MS Sm–Nd isotope measurements applied to monazite endowed with LREE-enriched geochemical peculiarities as well as zircon U–Pb–Hf isotope, to reevaluate the Late Neoarchean metamorphic event in northern Liaoning, eastern North China Craton. Monazites within the biotite two-feldspar gneiss from the Qingyuan greenstone belt are Ce-monazite in composition, with negligible amounts of the huttonite and brabantite components. The internally homogeneous and anhedral rounded granular monazites show textural equilibration in contact with plagioclase, quartz, and K-feldspar, indicating that monazite is a product of metamorphism. The apparent ages and Eu/Eu* values of monazite analyses show a positive correlation, which confirms the continuous formation of monazite and coeval feldspar during the metamorphic evolution. These metamorphic monazites yield a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2493 ± 8 Ma and an upper intercept age of 2496 ± 8 Ma, consistent with the metamorphic zircon dates of 2492–2468 Ma. These results, along with monazite Sm–Nd isochron of 2459 Ma, thus provide a critical clue to understand the Late Neoarchean high-grade regional metamorphism in the eastern North China Craton. As a consequence, the Qingyuan greenstone belt was only partially influenced by the Paleoproterozoic tectono-thermal events, not largely as previously thought by some workers.

Kinematics and structural evolution of the Anziling dome-and-keel architecture in east China: Evidence of Neoarchean vertical tectonism in the North China Craton

The debate on the role of vertical versus horizontal tectonism in Archean cratons is intimately linked to the initiation of plate tectonics. The dome-and-keel architecture has been considered as a consequence of vertical tectonism. Although such a structural pattern is documented in some Mesoarchean and older cratons, such as the Kaapvaal and Pilbara cratons, whether it also occurs in Neoarchean cratons is poorly constrained. Determining the kinematics, structural evolution, and the timing of these structures is crucial in understanding how the tectonic behavior operated during the evolution of the early Earth. The North China Craton, especially its eastern part, is a Neoarchean continental block and preserves typical greenstone-granite rock assemblages. Detailed structural mapping reveals that the Anziling area (east China) is characterized by a typical dome structure without significant reworking by later deformation. The dome is in tectonic contact with a supracrustal rock assemblage that is now the dip-slip Shuangshanzi ductile shear zone. In the supracrustal rocks, compositional layers are folded into upright isoclinal folds. Meanwhile, along the shear zone, foliation varies from NNW to SW with sub-vertical dip. Mineral stretching lineations indicate a sinistral shear sense with a slightly oblique-slip component in the north, but show NWW-directed and SW-directed steep dip-slip shear in the west and south, respectively. Kinematic indicators imply that the granitic dome formed through a vertically upward movement accompanied by an uneven clockwise rotation. The supracrustal rocks sank downwards to form the regional keel structure. Structural data suggests that the Anziling area is a typical dome-and-keel structure. U-Pb zircon dating on pre-, syn-, and post-tectonic dykes indicate that the dome-and-keel structure formed at 2530−2500 Ma, and was intimately related to the emplacement of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite granitoids. New data from this study suggest that until the late Neoarchean, the vertical tectonism was still a dominant tectonic regime that was operating in the eastern North China Craton.

Evolution of Archean Sanukitoids from the Otto Stock by Magma Mixing and Na–K Metasomatism: Evidence from Petrological Observations and Lithium Isotope Geochemistry

Abstract Petrogenetic models for the genesis of Archean sanukitoids are diverse in the literature but most point to the initiation of plate tectonics and the construction of the first proto-continents during the Late Archean. These rocks include diorites, monzonites, monzodiorites, quartz monzodiorites, trachyandesites, granodiorites and tonalites, and are defined as having SiO2 = 55–60 wt%, Na2O + K2O = 6 wt%, MgO > 6 wt%, Mg# > 60, Ni–Cr > 100 ppm, Sr and Ba = 600–1800 ppm, chondrite-normalized Ce and Yb values of 80–250 and 4–10, respectively, and no Eu anomalies. Petrogenetic models include the partial melting of mantle peridotite previously metasomatized by fluids of crustal or mantle origin, partial melting of subducted slabs and assimilation of peridotite, and partial melting of undepleted peridotite with subsequent mixing with tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) crustal partial melts and addition of carbonatite, all of which may or may not include subsequent differentiation by fractional crystallization. Here, extraordinary textural relations unequivocally show that at the Late Archean Otto stock, Abitibi, Canada, sanukitoids resulted from the assimilation of clinopyroxenite by monzonitic magmas and coeval magmatic–hydrothermal Na–K metasomatism. The metasomatized monzonites (± quartz), melanogranites, granodiorites, and sanukitoidal melanoporphyries were subsequently cut by swarms of lamprophyre dykes hosting a different set of hydrothermal alteration assemblages, including propylitic alteration, biotitization, chloritization, and pyritization, along with associated enrichments in Au. These alterations are shown to be associated with the nearby Cadillac–Larder Lake Fault Zone and the world-class Kirkland Lake gold deposit. The Li isotopic compositions of these rocks correlate with Au concentrations and range from magmatic values of ∼ +4 ‰ up to +10·4 ‰ in Na–K metasomatized and Au-depleted rocks, and from magmatic values of ∼4 ‰ down to 0·6 ‰ in rocks hosting propylitic, chloritic, and biotitic alteration and Au enrichments of up to 2·9 ppm Au.

Tectonics of the Isua Supracrustal Belt 2: Microstructures Reveal Distributed Strain in the Absence of Major Fault Structures

AbstractArchean geological records are increasingly interpreted to indicate a ≤3.2 Ga initiation of plate tectonics on Earth. This hypothesis contrasts with dominant plate tectonic interpretations for the Eoarchean (ca. 4.0–3.6 Ga) Isua supracrustal belt (southwest Greenland). Alternatively, recent work shows the belt could have formed via heat‐pipe tectonics. Predicted strain distributions across the belt vary between models. Plate tectonic models predict a dominant unidirectional shear sense, corresponding to subduction vergence, and strain localization within ∼10‐m‐scale shear zones. In contrast, the proposed heat‐pipe model predicts two opposing shear senses, corresponding to opposite limbs of 0.1‐m to km‐scale a‐type folds (i.e., sheath and curtain folds), with relatively equal strain distributed across the belt. Here, we present the first microstructure study using thin‐section petrography and electron backscatter diffraction analysis on quartz of oriented samples from throughout the Isua supracrustal belt. Key findings are: (1) the Eoarchean Isua supracrustal belt was deformed at ∼500°C–650°C, with potential postdeformational recovery at similar or lower temperatures, (2) the spatial distribution of the two opposing shear senses which dominate the belt (top‐to‐southeast and top‐to‐northwest) appears to be random, and (3) the strain intensity across the belt appears to be quasiuniform as evidenced by the uniformly low (mostly <0.1) M‐indexes of quartz fabrics, such that no ≤ 100 ‐m‐scale shear zones can be detected. Our findings are only consistent with the predictions of the heat‐pipe model and do not require plate tectonics, so the geology of the belt is compatible with a ≤3.2 Ga initiation of plate tectonics.

First evidence of eclogites overprinted by ultrahigh temperature metamorphism in Everest East, Himalaya: Implications for collisional tectonics on early Earth

Modern-style plate tectonics, often characterised by subduction, is a fundamental dynamic process for planet Earth. Subduction related eclogites are widely used to indicate initiation of plate tectonics or whether different tectonic regimes dominated Earth history. However, such markers are commonly overprinted in ancient metamorphic terranes and rarely preserved even in most Phanerozoic mountain belts. This study tries to reveal the detailed burial and exhumation processes that formed granulitized eclogites in the Everest east region, central Himalaya, so as to explore the tectonic regimes recorded by similar rocks on early Earth. Robust Pressure-Temperature-time paths were achieved by studying the mineral relicts (Omp, Jd ∼29%), high-temperature mineral textures (Sil-Crd-Qz-Spl-Mesoperthite assemblage, rutile exsolution in biotite), and multiple thermobarometry and petrochronology of eclogites and metapelites. Results show that these eclogites underwent eclogitization at conditions of 730–770°C and ∼20 kbar (∼11°C/km) at ∼30 Ma and were overprinted by a heating and decompression path to ultrahigh temperature (UHT) conditions of 6–11 kbar and 900–970°C (∼40°C/km) during 25–15 Ma. The resulting exhumation rate (2–3 mm/yr) is slow and prolonged (10–15 Myr) (U)HT favoured re-equilibration of the eclogitic mineral assemblage and textures. The obtained UHT conditions, the first time ever reported for the Himalaya, were induced by combined effects of over-thickened (∼60 km) radioactive felsic crust and thinning of lithosphere to <90 km. This case study provides a critical example to understand the heat sources and timescale of UHT condition during continental collision. By comparing with the western Himalaya eclogites, we suggest that formation of cold vs. granulitized continental eclogites during the Himalayan orogeny is caused by different crustal thickness (normal ∼30 km vs. over-thickened ∼60 km) due to different collisional stages (infant vs. mature). In a wider perspective, ancient eclogites were commonly granulitized by stacking into the over-thickened orogenic crust during mature continental collision. According to similar granulitized eclogites preserved on early Earth, Himalaya-type continental subduction/collision should have become a global pattern during the Paleoproterozoic (2.0–1.8 Ga).

The origin of arc basalts: New advances and remaining questions

Whether arc magmatism occurs above oceanic subduction zones is the forefront of studies on convergent plate margins. The most important petrologic issue related to the evolution of arc systems is the origin of arc magmatism, among which arc basalts are the most important one because they provide insights into mantle enrichment mechanism and crust-mantle interaction at oceanic subduction zones. Fluids or melts released either by dehydration or by melting of subducting oceanic slab infiltrate and metasomatize the overlying mantle wedge at varying depth, leading to the formation of source regions of arc basalts. Such processes make most of arc basalts commonly enriched in large ion lithosphile elements and light rare earth elements, but depleted in high-field strength elements and heavy rare earth elements. Small amounts of arc basalts are characterized by relatively high Nb contents or by Nb enrichment. Rare basalts with compositions similar to ocean island basalts or mid-ocean ridge basalt also occur in arc systems. For these peculiar rocks, it remains debated whether their source is affected by subduction-related components. During their ascent and before their eruption, arc basaltic magmas are subjected to crystal fractionation, mixing and crustal contamination. In addition to the contribution of subducting slab components to the mantle source of arc basalts, the materials above the subducting slab at forearc depths would have been transported either by drag or by subduction erosion into the subarc mantle and into the source of arc magmas. Heats and materials brought by corner flows also play important roles in the generation of arc basalts. Despite the important progresses made in recent studies of arc basalts, further efforts are needed to investigate subarc mantle metasomatism, material recycling, the formation of arc magma sources, geodynamic mechanism in generating arc basalts, and their implicationd s for the initiation of plate tectonics on Earth.

Geochronology and Geochemistry of Archean TTG and Tremolite Schist Xenoliths in Yemadong Complex: Evidence for ≥3.0 Ga Archean Continental Crust in Kongling High-Grade Metamorphic Terrane, Yangtze Craton, China

The origin and significance of the tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) units and the familiar metabasite xenoliths they host in the Yangtze Craton, China, remain controversial, and resolving these issues is important if we are to understand the evolution of the early Yangtze Craton. We focused on biotite–tremolite schist xenoliths in the Archean TTG units of the Kongling high-grade metamorphic terrane, and U–Pb dating of their zircons yielded 207Pb/206Pb ages of ca. 3.00 Ga, which provides a minimum age for the formation of the pre-metamorphic basic igneous rock. The host TTGs and late intrusive granitic dikes yield three groups of upper intercept ages at 2.87–2.88, 2.91–2.94, and 3.07 Ga, and a concordant age at 2.94 Ga, which suggest that the Yangtze continental nucleus underwent three important metamorphic–magmatic events in the Mesoarchean at ca. 3.00, 2.94, and 2.87 Ga. The biotite–tremolite schists have high ratios of K2O/Na2O and high contents of CaO, Cr, and Ni, thus showing the characteristics of high-K calc-alkaline island-arc volcanic rocks (basalt–andesite) that form by the partial melting of subducted oceanic crust. The data also provide further proof that a Mesoarchean metamorphic basement exists in the Yangtze Plate. Derivation of the magmatic protoliths of the biotite–tremolite schist enclaves from an oceanic crust during slab subduction, and the presence of these xenoliths within the TTG suite, indicate the existence of the initiation of plate tectonics during the Mesoarchean (≤2.94 Ga).

Metamorphism and exhumation of basement gneiss domes in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero: Two stage dome-and-keel evolution?

The presence of dome-and-keel provinces in Archean cratons has been connected with the initiation of plate tectonics on Earth as these features are most commonly observed in Archean rocks. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero in Brazil has been identified as a Paleoproterozoic dome-and-keel province for more than three decades. The prevailing model suggests that it formed during the Rhyacian Transamazonian orogeny, making it unique among dome-and-keel provinces. However, a lack of appropriate lithologies, datable minerals and the metamorphic overprint of later orogenesis has resulted in a cryptic metamorphic record for the formation of this dome-and-keel province. A clinopyroxene-bearing migmatite from the core of the Bação dome has peak P–T conditions of 5–7 kbar and 700–750 °C and a published age of ca. 2730 Ma based on U–Pb ages of zircon from leucosomes, suggesting that this age represents the migmatisation event. A fine-grained epidote-albite-titanite assemblage overprints the coarse-grained clinopyroxene and amphibole, giving P–T conditions of 8–9 kbar and 550 °C with an associated titanite age of ca. 2050 Ma. A garnet-bearing amphibolite sample also from the core of the dome has peak P–T conditions of 7–8 kbar and 650–700 °C, and texturally late titanite from this sample produces an age of ca. 2060 Ma. Three additional samples were collected from the edges of the dome. A garnet-gedrite bearing felsic schist produces peak P–T conditions of 8–9 kbar and 650–700 °C on a clockwise P–T evolution. This sample has a U–Pb zircon age of ca. 2775 Ma, which could date metamorphism or be the age of its volcaniclastic protolith. Texturally unconstrained titanite from the sample gives an age of ca. 2040 Ma. A garnet-bearing amphibolite that occurs as a boudin within the felsic schist gives both zircon and titanite ages of ca. 2050 Ma and has peak P–T conditions of 5–6 kbar and 650–700 °C on a near isobaric P–T path. An amphibolite dike, observed to cross-cut the felsic schist produces a zircon U–Pb age of ca. 2760 Ma. Altogether this data suggests that the samples were metamorphosed in the Archean (ca. 2775–2730 Ma) and again during the Transamazonian event. The most plausible explanation for this data is that dome-and-keel formation occurred in the Archean with migmatisation and high-temperature metamorphism occurring at this time. The Paleoproterozoic event is interpreted as a reactivation of the dome-and-keel formation structures, with Paleoproterozoic keels crosscutting Archean keels and producing metamorphic aureoles. The high radiogenic heat production and the presence of dense sedimentary successions in Archean terranes make dome-and-keel provinces a uniquely Archean feature, but they are susceptible to reworking, resulting in an enigmatic record of formation.

Dynamics of a terrestrial magma ocean under planetary rotation: A study in spherical geometry

During a later stage of the Earth's accretion, impacts of mars-sized bodies on the Earth caused one or more deep terrestrial magma oceans of global extent. During that time, the Earth rotated very fast with a rotation period between two and five hours. Accordingly, the effect of planetary rotation is not only of key importance for the chemical structure and the development of chemical heterogeneities, but also sets the stage for the initiation of plate tectonics on Earth.This study investigates the effect of planetary rotation on the dynamics of silicate crystals in spherical geometry during an early stage of magma ocean solidification. Our results in a rotating spherical shell reveal a substantial influence of planetary rotation on the early magma ocean crystallization, leading to crucial differences in solidification with respect to crystal accumulation depth and latitude.Without and with slow planetary rotation, crystals are kept in suspension at all latitudes. Differently, at moderate and high rotation rate clear dependencies of the crystal dynamics on latitude do arise. At the poles, all crystals settle at the bottom, while in the equatorial region they stay entrained in the bottom half. However, at mid-latitudes they are kept in suspension and are distributed over the entire depth of the magma ocean. At even higher rotation rate all crystals accumulate at the bottom of the spherical shell, suggesting that crystallization would start at the bottom. At lower latitudes crystals are repeatedly re-entrained by convective motions, hindering the development of a stable layering at low latitudes, whereas at higher latitudes a potentially stable gravitational layering does develop.Our numerical experiments reveal that planetary rotation is likely to induce an inhomogeneous solidification of a terrestrial magma ocean with respect to depth and latitude, depending on the rotational strength. This has important consequences on the solidification time and further favors major chemical segregation resulting in large-scale chemical heterogeneities developing during magma ocean crystallization. The origin and distribution of mantle heterogeneities like the LLSVPs could be an imprint of planetary rotation on the magma ocean crystallization during Earth's early evolution.

A gradual transition to plate tectonics on Earth between 3.2 to 2.7 billion years ago

AbstractZircon crystals precipitated from granitoid magmas contain a robust record of the age and chemistry of continental magmatism spanning some 4.375 Ga of Earth history, a record that charts initiation of plate tectonics. However, constraining when exactly plate tectonics began to dominate crustal growth processes is challenging as the geochemical signatures of individual rocks may reflect local subduction processes rather than global plate tectonics. Here we apply counting statistics to a global database of coupled U–Pb and Hf isotope analyses on magmatic zircon grains from continental igneous and sedimentary rocks to quantify changes in the compositions of their source rocks. The analysis reveals a globally significant change in the sources of granitoid magmas between 3.2 and 2.7 Ga. These secular changes in zircon chemistry are driven by a coupling of the deep (depleted mantle) and shallow (crustal) Earth reservoirs, consistent with a geodynamic regime dominated by Wilson cycle style plate tectonics.

Formation of cratonic lithosphere during the initiation of plate tectonics

Earth’s oldest near-surface material, the cratonic crust, is typically underlain by thick lithosphere (>200 km) of Archean age. This cratonic lithosphere likely thickened in a high-compressional-stress environment, potentially linked to the onset of crustal shortening in the Neoarchean. Mantle convection in the hotter Archean Earth would have imparted relatively low stresses on the lithosphere, whether or not plate tectonics was operating, so a high stress signal from the early Earth is paradoxical. We propose that a rapid transition from heat pipe–mode convection to the onset of plate tectonics generated the high stresses required to thicken the cratonic lithosphere. Numerical calculations are used to demonstrate that an existing buoyant and strong layer, representing depleted continental lithosphere, can thicken and stabilize during a lid-breaking event. The peak compressional stress experienced by the lithosphere is 3×–4× higher than for the stagnant-lid or mobile-lid regimes immediately before and after. It is plausible that the cratonic lithosphere has not been subjected to this high stress state since, explaining its long-term stability. The lid-breaking thickening event reproduces features observed in typical Neoarchean cratons, such as lithospheric seismological reflectors and the formation of thrust faults. Paleoarchean “pre-tectonic” structures can also survive the lid-breaking event, acting as strong rafts that are assembled during the compressive event. Together, the results indicate that the signature of a catastrophic switch from a stagnant-lid Earth to the initiation of plate tectonics has been captured and preserved in the characteristics of cratonic crust and lithosphere.

Petrogenesis and zircon LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating of newly discovered Mesoarchean gneisses on the northern margin of the North China Craton

ABSTRACTGeological mapping and zircon U–Pb laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) dating has identified a Mesoarchean (2857 ± 17 Ma) geological unit in the Luanjiajie area of the northern margin of the North China Craton, within the northern part of Liaoning Province, China. This unit is dominated by tonalitic and trondhjemite gneisses that form part of a typical tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) rock assemblage. These Mesoarchean gneisses are enriched in Na and depleted in K, yield K2O/Na2O ratios of 0.34–0.50, have Rittmann index (σ) values of 1.54–3.04, and are calc-alkaline. They have EuN/EuN* values of 0.77–1.20 (average of 1.03), indicating that these samples have negligible Eu anomalies, and yield high LaN/YbN values (4.92–23.12). These characteristics indicate that these Mesoarchean gneisses have fractionated rare earth element (REE) compositions that are enriched in the light REE (LREE) and depleted in the heavy REE (HREE), with steeply dipping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. These gneisses are also enriched in Rb, Th, K, Zr, and Hf, and are relatively depleted in Ta, Nb, P, and Ti. In summary, the magma that formed these tonalitic and trondhjemite gneisses was most likely derived from the partial melting of lower-crustal basaltic rocks during subduction. The timing of formation (2.85 Ga) of the Luanjiajie tonalite and trondhjemite gneisses probably represents the timing of initiation of plate tectonics within the LongGang Block during a SE-directed subduction event. The presence of inherited zircons with ages of >3.0 Ga within the Luanjiajie gneisses suggests that this area may contain as yet undiscovered rocks that formed before 3.0 Ga.

Initiation of plate tectonics in the Hadean: Eclogitization triggered by the ABEL Bombardment

When plate tectonics began on the Earth has been long debated and here we argue this topic based on the records of Earth-Moon geology and asteroid belt to conclude that the onset of plate tectonics was during the middle Hadean (4.37–4.20 Ga). The trigger of the initiation of plate tectonics is the ABEL Bombardment, which delivered oceanic and atmospheric components on a completely dry reductive Earth, originally comprised of enstatite chondrite-like materials. Through the accretion of volatiles, shock metamorphism processed with vaporization of both CI chondrite and supracrustal rocks at the bombarded location, and significant recrystallization went through under wet conditions, caused considerable eclogitization in the primordial continents composed of felsic upper crust of 21 km thick anorthosite, and 50 km or even thicker KREEP lower crust. Eclogitization must have yielded a powerful slab-pull force to initiate plate tectonics in the middle Hadean. Another important factor is the size of the bombardment. By creating Pacific Ocean class crater by 1000 km across impactor, rigid plate operating stagnant lid tectonics since the early Hadean was severely destroyed, and oceanic lithosphere was generated to have bi-modal lithosphere on the Earth to enable the operation of plate tectonics. Considering the importance of the ABEL Bombardment event which initiated plate tectonics including the appearance of ocean and atmosphere, we propose that the Hadean Eon can be subdivided into three periods: (1) early Hadean (4.57–4.37 Ga), (2) middle Hadean (4.37–4.20 Ga), and (3) late Hadean (4.20–4.00 Ga).

Why primordial continents were recycled to the deep: Role of subduction erosion

Geological observations indicate that there are only a few rocks of Archean Earth and no Hadean rocks on the surface of the present-day Earth. From these facts, many scientists believe that the primordial continents never existed during Hadean Earth, and the continental volume has kept increasing. On the other hand, recent studies reported the importance of the primordial continents on the origin of life, implying their existence. In this paper, we discussed the possible process that could explain the loss of the primordial continents with the assumption that they existed in the Hadean. Although depending on the timing of the initiation of plate tectonics and its convection style, subduction erosion, which is observed on the present-day Earth, might have carried the primordial continents into the deep mantle.

Reaction-induced rheological weakening enables oceanic plate subduction.

Earth is the only terrestrial planet in our solar system where an oceanic plate subducts beneath an overriding plate. Although the initiation of plate subduction requires extremely weak boundaries between strong plates, the way in which oceanic mantle rheologically weakens remains unknown. Here we show that shear-enhanced hydration reactions contribute to the generation and maintenance of weak mantle shear zones at mid-lithospheric depths. High-pressure friction experiments on peridotite gouge reveal that in the presence of hydrothermal water, increasing strain and reactions lead to an order-of-magnitude reduction in strength. The rate of deformation is controlled by pressure-solution-accommodated frictional sliding on weak hydrous phyllosilicate (talc), providing a mechanism for the ‘cutoff' of the high peak strength at the brittle-plastic transition. Our findings suggest that infiltration of seawater into transform faults with long lengths and low slip rates is an important controlling factor on the initiation of plate tectonics on terrestrial planets.

The importance of temporal stress variation and dynamic disequilibrium for the initiation of plate tectonics

AbstractWe use 1‐D thermal history models and 3‐D numerical experiments to study the impact of dynamic thermal disequilibrium and large temporal variations of normal and shear stresses on the initiation of plate tectonics. Previous models that explored plate tectonics initiation from a steady state, single plate mode of convection concluded that normal stresses govern the initiation of plate tectonics, which based on our 1‐D model leads to plate yielding being more likely with increasing interior heat and planet mass for a depth‐dependent Byerlee yield stress. Using 3‐D spherical shell mantle convection models in an episodic regime allows us to explore larger temporal stress variations than can be addressed by considering plate failure from a steady state stagnant lid configuration. The episodic models show that an increase in convective mantle shear stress at the lithospheric base initiates plate failure, which leads with our 1‐D model to plate yielding being less likely with increasing interior heat and planet mass. In this out‐of‐equilibrium and strongly time‐dependent stress scenario, the onset of lithospheric overturn events cannot be explained by boundary layer thickening and normal stresses alone. Our results indicate that in order to understand the initiation of plate tectonics, one should consider the temporal variation of stresses and dynamic disequilibrium.

Heat transport in the Hadean mantle: From heat pipes to plates

AbstractPlate tectonics is a unique feature of Earth, and it plays a dominant role in transporting Earth's internally generated heat. It also governs the nature, shape, and the motion of the surface of Earth. The initiation of plate tectonics on Earth has been difficult to establish observationally, and modeling of the plate breaking process has not consistently accounted for the nature of the preplate tectonic Earth. We have performed numerical simulations of heat transport in the preplate tectonic Earth to understand the transition to plate tectonic behavior. This period of time is dominated by volcanic heat transport called the heat pipe mode of planetary cooling. These simulations of Earth's mantle include heat transport by melting and melt segregation (volcanism), Newtonian temperature‐dependent viscosity, and internal heating. We show that when heat pipes are active, the lithosphere thickens and lithospheric isotherms are kept flat by the solidus. Both of these effects act to suppress plate tectonics. As volcanism wanes, conduction begins to control lithospheric thickness, and large slopes arise at the base of the lithosphere. This produces large lithospheric stress and focuses it on the thinner regions of the lithosphere resulting in plate breaking events.
