Systematic Literature Review of Open Infrastructure BIM

Representation and modeling using the building information modeling (BIM) methodology of civil works have become the subject of increasing attention in recent years, thanks to the potential offered by Open Infrastructure BIM (I-BIM). However, the complexity of infrastructure works, i.e., the variety of construction and technological systems, makes Open I-BIM very complex and challenging. The lack of systemic knowledge on the subject is another challenging factor. The aim of the following research work is to provide a synoptic overview of the existing scientific research, accompanied by the most recent studies in the field of computer modeling, its applications, and the main opportunities that Open I-BIM offers to the infrastructure sector. After a thorough review of 198 scientific articles published between 2013 and 2023, this study systematically presents a holistic review and critical reflection on the current status of the use of Open BIM in the infrastructure sector, with a focus on the development of the tools and methods used. The outcome of this work constitutes a systematic review of the literature with a bibliometric analysis on Open I-BIM, which is able to provide a knowledge base for identifying research trends, common problems, and the potential of developed methods.

Leveraging Infrastructure BIM for Life-Cycle-Based Sustainable Road Pavement Management.

The latest developments in the field of road asphalt materials and pavement construction/maintenance technologies, as well as the spread of life-cycle-based sustainability assessment techniques, have posed issues in the continuous and efficient management of data and relative decision-making process for the selection of appropriate road pavement design and maintenance solutions; Infrastructure Building Information Modeling (IBIM) tools may help in facing such challenges due to their data management and analysis capabilities. The present work aims to develop a road pavement life cycle sustainability assessment framework and integrate such a framework into the IBIM of a road pavement project through visual scripting to automatically provide the informatization of an appropriate pavement information model and evaluate sustainability criteria already in the design stage through life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis methods. The application of the proposed BIM-based tool to a real case study allowed us (a) to draw considerations about the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of alternative road construction materials and (b) to draft a maintenance plan for a specific road section that represents the best compromise solution among the analyzed ones. The IBIM tool represents a practical and dynamic way to integrate environmental considerations into road pavement design, encouraging the use of digital tools in the road industry and ultimately supporting a pavement maintenance decision-making process oriented toward a circular economy.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Application for a Section of Bologna’s Red Tramway Line

New technologies such as the I-BIM (Infrastructure Building Information Modeling) are radically changing the infrastructure design and construction sector. In this study, the I-BIM approach has been used for the design of a portion of the future Bologna’s Red Tramway Line. Starting from the topographical survey of the area, a “federated” model was created, aggregating in a single digital environment all the models inherent to the individual disciplines involved. Interference analysis (Clash Detection) between the various disciplines was performed, subject to the preparation of a coordination matrix and the temporal simulation of the worksite phases (BIM 4D). The results have shown that the I-BIM approach represents a powerful tool for optimizing and validating infrastructure design, allowing users to see how the infrastructure integrates and fits into the real 3D environmental context.

Road Map to BIM Use for Infrastructure Domains: Identifying and Contextualizing Variables of Infrastructure Projects

Nowadays, construction activities and projects are becoming much more challenging and complex to handle. Being involve with different stakeholders is a difficult task and information and communication technology (ICT) has been addressed as a solution. Afterwards, there was a major shift in ICT usage for construction projects and furthermore, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been found its position among the experts as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) paradigm. By inspiration from modality of BIM, there can be an adoption to other sub-branch of construction industry such as infrastructure domain. Since BIM has proven benefits in buildings, infrastructure projects might gain similar advantages through proper implementation. This new dimension can be called Infrastructure Building Information Modeling (I-BIM). The main aim of conducting this research is to identify and prove the existing lack of using BIM for infrastructure projects. In order to fulfill this gap, questionnaire survey designed and respondents were mostly located at United States of America and Turkey. As a finding, authors clarify the preponderance and impediment components in the path of I-BIM utilization and discuss five main categories with total number of 26 variables. Furthermore data mining among selected countries has been done for all variables with comprehensive discussion.

A geometric deep learning approach for checking element-to-entity mappings in infrastructure building information models

Abstract Data interoperability between domain-specific applications is a key prerequisite for building information modeling (BIM) to solidify its position as a central medium for collaboration and information sharing in the construction industry. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provides an open and neutral data format to standardize data exchanges in BIM, but is often exposed to data loss and misclassifications. Concretely, errors in mappings between BIM elements and IFC entities may occur due to manual omissions or the lack of awareness of the IFC schema itself, which is broadly defined and highly complex. This study explored the use of geometric deep learning models to classify infrastructure BIM elements, with the ultimate goal of automating the prechecking of BIM-to-IFC mappings. Two models with proven classification performance, Multi-View Convolutional Neural Network (MVCNN) and PointNet, were trained and tested to classify 10 types of commonly used BIM elements in road infrastructure, using a dataset of 1496 3D models. Results revealed MVCNN as the superior model with ACC and F1 score values of 0.98 and 0.98, compared with PointNet's corresponding values of 0.83 and 0.87, respectively. MVCNN, which employs multiple images to learn the features of a 3D artifact, was able to discern subtle differences in their shapes and geometry. PointNet seems to lose the granularity of the shapes, as it uses points partially selected from point clouds.

Development of Railway Infrastructure BIM Prototype Libraries

Building Information Modeling (BIM) can act as a solution to improve various difficulties faced in the construction industry. BIM is expanding into infrastructure facilities for integrated information management, productivity improvement, and risk management. There are many cases where BIM is applied to buildings with horizontal and linear characteristics, but the infrastructure is different from the method of applying BIM to buildings with vertical characteristics. Using premanufactured libraries in BIM-based design can shorten the design time and simplify the design method, thus increasing the 3D design productivity. This paper develops BIM prototype libraries based on the standards from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) of South Korea for railway infrastructure. BIM tools such as Civil 3D, Revit, and AECOsim were used by reflecting the characteristics of each facility, and the libraries, with a total of 762 types in 363 files, were constructed. The specifications were created by linking the common and facility-specific attribute items to the libraries. The result of the test modeling using the developed library showed significant productivity improvement, such as an average difference of 38.2% was observed for roadbed modeling and a mean difference of 50.2% for bridge modeling.

Review Building Information Modelling for Infrastructure: Benefits for Constructor

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a major transformation in the building industry. The construction is seen among the best solutions to overcome too many problems faced in conventional industry construction. Conventional construction is associated with two-dimensional (2D) drawing technology while BIM used three-dimensional (3D) model and each component in the construction process contains detail information. Therefore this study is to collect the earlier investigations on the use of BIM in infrastructure in the perspective of the constructor to view and analyze the current status for adopting this technique. The basic development of BIM for infrastructure is emphasized in this observation. Benefits for the constructor for Building Information Modelling for infrastructure will be analysed from past research. Through this observation, we have found many benefits for construction on BIM for infrastructure, especially for the design and construction phase. Selected for phases design and construct is by most collected themes on review of BIM uses throughout an infrastructure lifecycle. However, the listed benefits are the most stated in past research. These benefits show that this technology of BIM is the most effective method that been applied in the infrastructure construction industry, especially for the constructor.

Integrated railway design using Infrastructure-Building Information Modeling. The case study of the port of Venice

The Infrastructure Building Information Modeling (I-BIM) is a digital information management system utilized in the transport infrastructures construction, becoming increasingly important. BIM modeling aims at bringing improvements to all design stages. The use of BIM modeling will also provide cost reduction and control, increase awareness to data, design information availability and usability in each phase of infrastructure life cycle. Although the advanced modeling of the building components and systems leads to advantages well highlighted by practice and literature, in case of transportation infrastructures a critical analysis could show if this design methodology carries out the same benefits. The limited availability of infrastructure components libraries and the difficulty in assigning parameters to the geometries of the objects (many of them with unique characteristics) have been frequently quoted as main obstacles to the BIM use for the transport infrastructures. With this background, the problem is to understand which BIM-for-building features must be preserved in the production and management practices of each infrastructure model (classes, information exchanges and relationship between the classes and the spatial decomposition). This work is focused on the study of the I-BIM methodologies for the transport infrastructures (in particular railway infrastructures), analyzing a case study related to the port of Venice. The upward trend of goods quantity daily passing through the port infrastructures, led to the need to expand the container loading/unloading ship areas and, at the same time, to find a new and faster goods exit from the port areas, compared to the existing railway infrastructures. The authors developed a pre-feasibility study to identify the railway connection between the new port station and the existing line Padova – Mestre and to evaluate the difficulties and the ripeness of available means for an integrated design with the BIM tools

I-BIM for existing airport infrastructures

New methods and technologies are changing the sectors of engineering and constructions. International researchers introduce the acronym I-BIM (Infrastructure Building Information Modeling) to point out a management information system of digital processes for infrastructures. In this study is shown the 3D parametric solid model of Lamezia Terme International Civil Airport’s runway located in Southern Italy. The 3D parametric model, including horizontal/vertical profiles and cross sections, was carried out using Autodesk Civil 3D, while the territorial context was recreated in Autodesk Infraworks360. Grip numbers data, collected during surveys from 2004 to 2015, were implemented in the mentioned 3D model. This intelligent 3D model-based process can be used in optimal Airport Pavement Management System (APMS) for planning maintenance operations (BIM seventh dimension) in according to Civil Aviation regulation.

BIM for infrastructure: An overall review and constructor perspective

The subject of building information modelling (BIM) has become a central topic to the improvement of the AECOO (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Owner and Operator) industry around the world, to the point where the concept is being expanded into domains it was not originally conceived to address. Transitioning BIMinto the domain of infrastructure projects has provided challenges and emphasized the constructor perspective of BIM. Therefore, this study aims to collect the relevant literature regarding BIM within the Infrastructure domain and its use from the constructor perspective to review and analyse the current industry positioning and research state of the art, with regards to the set criteria. The review highlighted a developing base of BIM for infrastructure. Fromthe analysis, the related research gapswere identified regarding information integration, alignment of BIM processes to constructor business processes & the effective governance and value of information. From this a unique research strategy utilising a framework for information governance coupled with a graph based distributed data environment is outlined to further progress the integration and efficiency of AECOO Infrastructure projects.

Multi‐Scale Geometric‐Semantic Modeling of Shield Tunnels for GIS and BIM Applications

AbstractThe planning of large infrastructure facilities such as inner‐city subway tracks requires the consideration of widely differing scales, ranging from the kilometer scale for the general routing of the track down to the centimeter scale for detailed design of connection points. On the one hand this implies the utilization of both, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as well as Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, for performing the required analysis, modeling, and visualization tasks. On the other hand, a sound foundation of handling multi‐scale representations is required. Although multi‐scale modeling is already well established in the GIS field, there are no corresponding approaches in Infrastructure BIM so far. However, multi‐scale concepts are also much needed in the BIM context, as the planning process typically provides only rough information in the early stages and increasingly detailed and fine‐grained information in later stages. To meet this demand, this article presents a comprehensive concept for incorporating multi‐scale representations with building information models, with a particular focus on the geometric‐semantic modeling of shield tunnels. Based on a detailed analysis of the data modeling methods used in CityGML and the requirements present in the context of infrastructure planning projects, we discuss potential extensions to the BIM data model Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) for incorporating multi‐scale representations of shield tunnels. Particular emphasis is put on providing means for preserving the consistency of the representation across the different Levels‐of‐Detail (LoDs), while taking into account both semantics and geometry. For realizing consistency preservation mechanisms, we propose to apply a procedural geometry description which makes it possible to define explicit dependencies between geometric entities on different LoDs. The modification of an object on a coarse level consequently results in an automated update of all dependent objects on the finer levels. Finally, we discuss the transformation of the IFC‐based multi‐scale tunnel model into a CityGML compliant tunnel representation.

토목설계 전문가 설문조사를 통한 BIM 활성화 방안

최근 건설공사에 이슈가 되고 있는 건축정보모델링(BIM)은 건설경기 둔화와 수주물량 감소에 따라 위기위식이 팽배한 건설산업의 새로운 돌파구로 주목받고 있다. 이미 건축분야는 국내외적으로 BIM을 도입하기 위해 관련연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 하지만 토목공사의 경우 건축공사와 달리 작업체계가 비반복적, 수평적, 비정형적이며, 프로젝트 수행 범위가 넓어 발생하는 정보의 양도 방대하여 건설사나 설계사에서는 BIM 구축을 위한 초기 투자비용의 부담과 투자대비 효과에 대한 의문과 부담을 갖고 있다. 이에, 국내 토목분야에 BIM을 적용하기 위해 토목설계 전문가들을 대상으로 BIM 기술수준을 파악하고 과거대비 현재 토목분야의 BIM에 대한 인식변화 분석을 통해 토목분야 BIM 활성화 저해요인을 파악하고 이를 해결할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다. 도출된 활성화 방안은 가이드 개발, 제도 개발, 납품성과 검증, 국제표준 상정 등 4가지 분야로 구성된다. 연구결과는 토목분야 BIM 적용을 위한 표준과 납품 성과품의 검수 및 검증체계 개발 연구과제의 연구방향 설정을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. Recently, BIM(Building Information Modeling),which has been an issue in construction work, has been focused on as a new alternative of building industry for way out of crisis by slowing down and decreasing of orders in construction industry. Research for introducing BIM to the architectural field is already proceeding actively at home and abroad. However, civil engineering is so nonrecurring, horizontal, and different from regular construction works that it a large amount of information occurs because of wide range of project, which causes construction firms and design engineers to have some questions whether their initial investment cost would work or not and feel uncomfortable with the cost. In this study, technology level in engineering firms were surveyed for adapting BIM to domestic civil engineering. Development direction of BIM standard information model was drawn through awareness change analysis of BIM in civil engineering, as well. Deduced development direction is composed of guide development, system development, deliverable check and international standard proposal. The outcome will be employed as preliminary data for the study on development of infrastructure BIM standard and deliverable check system in civil engineering.
