BOOK REVIEW: INTEGRATING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

In the context of technological advancements permeating various domains, including language learning and teaching, educators find themselves compelled to adapt and remain abreast of the progressions in educational technology, regardless of their preparedness. The impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the methods of education has become increasingly evident over the past two decades. Hence, the provision of guidance is imperative to effectively assist teachers in managing the ICT classroom. The “Integrating Information and Communication Technologies in English for Specific Purposes” book aims to offer educators a comprehensive understanding of the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) with language learning and teaching. Furthermore, this publication offers an exploration of the utilization of various information and communication technology (ICT) platforms, applications, and websites to facilitate the advancement of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Occupational Purposes (EOP), and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in a straightforward manner.

Development of a multilingual online course with the language support for teaching physics in English

<span lang="EN-US">Distance education offers an alternative to traditional teaching methods, particularly online courses. During the pandemic, the role of information and communication technologies in the field of education has increased and is used to organize both synchronous and asynchronous learning. However, not all information and communication technology (ICT) tools and platforms provide the necessary functionality for developing online courses in the direction of language integration. This article discusses the issues of creating a multilingual online course of physics in English with the necessary language support and additional functions for the development of students’ academic language. The study used such methods as a survey, focus groups, analytical and descriptive methods, and empirical research. The key features of the developed course are the use of various types of content and methods for assessing both subject and language knowledge and skills. The presented survey results, data on summative assessment (SE), and trial testing show the effectiveness of the developed course modules. The conclusions and results described in the article will be useful to teachers of natural sciences in general education and private schools, especially those using international programs, deputy directors, as well as teachers who teach their subjects in a second or third language.</span>

Experiences from a COVID-19 vaccination center at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Delhi, India: Challenges and solutions.

India began its nationwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program on January 16, 2021, in a phased manner. In this paper, we have discussed our experience at one of the COVID-19 vaccination centers in the country and have identified a few of the major challenges and their implications. The guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination in the country were changing frequently, leading to ambiguity among the beneficiaries. Co-WIN software, used for program implementation, had some glitches, which caused dissatisfaction among the service providers and beneficiaries. Vaccine hesitancy and eagerness caused low vaccine uptake initially and overcrowding at vaccination centers later. Some of the vaccination centers had the potential to become hot spots for further spread of the virus due to insufficient infrastructure. The disparity in access to vaccines for the homeless and other vulnerable groups was another hurdle for adequate vaccination coverage. These challenges could have been addressed by pretesting the information technology platform, long-term planning with a vision for handling vaccine hesitancy and eagerness, strong communication systems, removing disparities in vaccine access, and maintaining uniformity in messages for frequently updating guidelines.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM FOR ARMS TRADE

Based on the postulate that the arms trade is generally a complex, specific and multifaceted field of activity, which includes the production, distribution, sale and use of various types of weapons and military equipment. In this context, the authors of the article proposed the development of an innovative information technology platform for accounting and analysis of arms trade processes, which takes into account the peculiarities of domestic legislation. It was noted that the use of blockchain technology on the information and technological platform of weapons sales is aimed at increasing security and tracking the full set of transactions, reducing risks and ensuring maximum transparency of processes. It is assumed that each stage of the life cycle of weapons, starting from design, production and ending with sale, will be recorded by blockchain methods and means. Information about the manufacturer, the date of manufacture, transportation, purchase and acceptance of the weapon by the customer will be recorded in the blocks. With the use of an information technology platform, the validity of licenses will be checked with each transaction, ensuring the legality of the sale and taking into account the unique characteristics of each weapon unit. The information technology platform will store information about transactions, including price, date and participants, smart contracts, etc. Development of an information technology platform that is conveniently integrated into the system of international standards and regulators, as well as meets numerous specific requirements and restrictions on arms trade. The authors of the article claim that the use of cryptography in blockchain technology provides reliable encryption and protection of confidential information, which is critical in a sensitive subject area such as the arms trade, and also contributes to a significant increase in the level of security, transparency and trust among participants in this specific industry. The conducted analysis confirms the expediency of using the potential of blockchain technology to optimize and increase the efficiency of the accounting of arms trade processes, as well as to ensure the reliability and safety of the functioning of the innovative information technology platform.

Exploring the Mechanism Construction and Strategies of Alumni Association Work in Local New Undergraduate Colleges and Universities: Evidence from Fujian University of Technology

As the number of fresh undergraduate graduates of general colleges and universities across the country continues to climb, alumni associations play an increasingly important role as a liaison platform for communicating with school alumni. However, under the increasingly complex social environment in the new era, most of the new undergraduate colleges and universities have not yet formed their cultural system cultivation, and the problem of alumni resources integration is prominent; insufficient attention to the work of alumni associations, insufficient mechanism and personnel protection, lack of sound departmental and management system, as well as the lack of development planning and information technology platforms; make it difficult to carry out the work of their alumni associations. This paper will investigate the current situation of alumni association of local newly-built undergraduate colleges and universities in China, analyze and summarize the main problems and difficulties of alumni association work, and take Fujian University of Science and Technology as an example, draw on the successful experience of its alumni association, and synthesize the experience of alumni associations of other general undergraduate colleges and universities, to take the best of their strengths and complement their weaknesses, and to solve the related problems. Finally, it explores the mechanism construction of alumni work of local newly-built undergraduate colleges and universities in the new era and the corresponding innovative strategies.

Design and Application of Global Energy Trade Cross Border E-commerce Optimization Model

INTRODUCTION: With the continuous advancement of global economic integration, cross-border energy trade activities internationally are becoming increasingly frequent.
 OBJECTIVES: To improve the efficiency of energy trade, this study is devoted to exploring the optimization model of cross-border e-commerce in global energy trade. Introducing advanced information technology and e-commerce platforms aims to facilitate the digital transformation of energy trade, improve transaction efficiency, reduce costs, and promote sustainable energy development.
 METHODS: This study adopts a comprehensive methodology, including a literature review, case analysis, and model construction. First, relevant literature on global energy trade and cross-border e-commerce was thoroughly studied to understand the current development status and existing problems. Second, the successful experiences and challenges of cross-border e-commerce in enhancing the efficiency of energy trade are summarized through the analysis of several international cases. Finally, a set of optimization models that comprehensively consider market demand, technical conditions, and policy environment are constructed to guide the development of cross-border e-commerce in global energy trade. RESULTS: The empirical analysis of the optimization model reveals that cross-border e-commerce has significant potential in international energy trade. The model can effectively improve transaction efficiency, reduce the risk of information asymmetry, and promote the balanced development of the global energy market. It is also observed that digital transformation significantly affects the promotion of sustainable energy, providing a more sustainable path for global energy transition.
 CONCLUSION: By establishing a cross-border e-commerce optimization model for international energy trade, this study provides substantial theoretical and empirical support for promoting the digital transformation of energy trade. In the future, governments, enterprises, and international organizations can draw on the conclusions of this study to formulate relevant policies and strategies to promote global energy trade jointly toward a more efficient and sustainable development path.

Financial Analysis of Information Technology Investments: “Assessing Benefits through Cost-Benefit Analysis and Ranti's Generic IS/IT Business Value Approach"

Technology drives economic growth and increases industrial competitiveness and has long been recognized for its dominance of industrial productivity. PT XYZ is a company engaged in the transportation services sector in Indonesia; from 2012 to 2017, PT XYZ carried out a massive digital transformation process by investing in information technology to improve its quality. This investment includes ERP, SAP implementation and improvement, RTS implementation and improvement, web-based information technology platforms, and mobile applications. This study aims to analyze the benefits of information technology investment made in PT XYZ using secondary data from the Company's annual financial statements accessed through the Company's website. The results of this study were conducted by analyzing financial statements from 2012 to 2020 using the Cost Benefit Analysis method and Ranti's Generic IS / IT Business Value method. Based on the Analysis, investment in information technology benefits the Company without distinguishing between tangible and intangible benefits identified in the form of 8 sub-categories in 5 categories based on Ranti's Generic IS/IT Business Value.

Stakeholder perception towards a machine‐learning‐based digital platform for detection and management of autism spectrum disorder

AbstractAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1% of the population, presenting a significant healthcare challenge due to limited resources, particularly a shortage of clinicians, which impedes timely ASD detection and management in children. This study investigates stakeholder viewpoints regarding the effectiveness of integrating machine learning (ML) into the information and communications technology (ICT) platform for ASD detection and intervention. Primary stakeholders, including parents and clinicians, provide first hand experiences with this technology during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. The research identifies critical technology adoption factors by synthesizing stakeholder input based on user experiences, technology design, technology utility, and its impact. Additionally, the study gathers insights from potential investors interested in assistive technologies. Stakeholders unanimously acknowledge the pivotal role of technology in enhancing current ASD detection and management. However, their attitudes toward technology adoption exhibit divergent trends during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. The study highlights a shift toward a technology‐enabled, human‐centred framework, which gained prominence post‐pandemic. Various factors contributing to this shift in stakeholder perspective were identified, including caregiver stress, technostress, and pandemic‐induced environmental factors affecting stakeholders’ stress levels and motivating them to shift towards a human‐centric model. Stakeholders emphasize the paramount importance of human‐centred approaches in ASD detection and intervention, with technology serving as an empowering tool. Stakeholders also highlight the imperative ethical and legal considerations to foster trust and enhance the adoption of ML‐based technology. Consequently, future research should delve into stakeholder perspectives within the framework of fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics (FATE) to ensure these technologies’ responsible development and implementation.

Non-Invasive Survey Techniques to Study Nuragic Archaeological Sites: The Nanni Arrù Case Study (Sardinia, Italy)

The Italian territory of Sardinia Island has an enormous cultural and identity heritage from the Pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods, with archaeological evidence of more than 7000 sites. However, many other undiscovered remnants of these ancient times are believed to be present. In this context, it can be helpful to analyze data from different types of sensors on a single information technology platform, to better identify and perimeter hidden archaeological structures. The main objective of the study is to define a methodology that through the processing, analysis, and comparison of data obtained using different non-invasive survey techniques could help to identify and document archaeological sites not yet or only partially investigated. The non-invasive techniques include satellite, unmanned aerial vehicle, and geophysical surveys that have been applied at the nuraghe Nanni Arrù, one of the most important finds in recent times. The complexity of this ancient megalithic edifice and its surroundings represents an ideal use case. The surveys showed some anomalies in the areas south–east and north–east of the excavated portion of the Nanni Arrù site. The comparison between data obtained with the different survey techniques used in the study suggests that in areas where anomalies have been confirmed by multiple data types, buried structures may be present. To confirm this hypothesis, further studies are believed necessary, for example, additional geophysical surveys in the excavated part of the site.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TOOLS AND STUDENTS’ HEALTHCARE IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN EDO STATE

The global outbreak of Covid-19 in late 2019 and early 2020 altered how information and communication technology platforms and devices were used. Virtual learning was incorporated into traditional classrooms by schools, digital marketing platforms were purchased by marketers, online transactions increased in financial services, online ticketing was purchased by transportation companies, and so forth. People adopted digital technology as a way of life as a result of this. Most locals became heavy users as a result. Has this had a negative impact on Edo State citizens' access to healthcare in the post-COVID-19 era? The goal of this study is to determine whether digital technologies have any detrimental effects on students' access to healthcare in Edo State's institutions of higher learning. Three research questions and hypotheses were presented and developed to direct this investigation, and the survey research methodology was chosen. For this study, 900 respondents were chosen using the basic random sample approach. The Digital Technology and Healthcare Questionnaire is the tool used to gather data (DTFHQ). At the 0.05 level of significance, the hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). It was shown that students' health in postsecondary institutions is significantly impacted by their usage of ICT technologies. It is advised that the usage of ICT tools in many spheres of life be moderated in light of these findings. Furthermore, it is advised that medical professionals and home managers conduct an awareness training regarding the potential health risks associated with the use of ICT technologies.

Accelerating pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma research: the Hodgkin Lymphoma Data Collaboration (NODAL).

Data commons have proven to be an indispensable avenue for advancing pediatric cancer research by serving as unified information technology platforms that, when coupled with data standards, facilitate data sharing. The Pediatric Cancer Data Commons, the flagship project of Data for the Common Good (D4CG), collaborates with disease-based consortia to facilitate development of clinical data standards, harmonization and pooling of clinical data from disparate sources, establishment of governance structure, and sharing of clinical data. In the interest of international collaboration, researchers developed the Hodgkin Lymphoma Data Collaboration and forged a relationship with the Pediatric Cancer Data Commons to establish a data commons for pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma. Herein, we describe the progress made in the formation of Hodgkin Lymphoma Data Collaboration and foundational goals to advance pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma research.

Procuring services through IT crowdsourcing: The role of IT administration and IT flexibility

Digital platforms provide organizations with new ways to conduct sourcing activities. Crowdsourcing has emerged as one potential method of sourcing various kinds of information technology (IT) services. Notwithstanding the benefits of IT crowdsourcing services (ITCSs), there is a lack of clarity about why some firms procure services through ITCS, whereas others do not. Drawing on the organizational capabilities perspective, we hypothesize that in-house IT administration capability and IT flexibility jointly enhance a firm’s ITCS Platform Suitability Assessment, which, in turn, leads to higher ITCS Service Procurement. We also posit that ITCS Platform Suitability Assessment mediates the relationship between IT Administration Capability and ITCS Service Procurement. Our empirical analysis of survey data from 308 firms in the United States supports our hypotheses. Our results suggest that firms that develop IT administrative capabilities and IT flexibility assess ITCS platform characteristics as more suitable for ITCS-related activities. ITCS Platform Suitability Assessment, in turn, drives firms to procure operational services (e.g., setting up automatic payments) and strategic services (e.g., project management) from the loose configuration of workers in the gig economy. Our results contribute to theory by positing and testing a theoretical model that expands the theoretical base used to explain ITCS sourcing. We discuss the implications for the business value of IT platforms, organizational structure, and capabilities in regard to future sourcing strategies.

Development of Party-building Activities and Innovation of Civic-Political Path in Colleges and Universities Based on Information Convergence Technology

Abstract Party-building activities in colleges and universities should adhere to the people-oriented, clear work orientation, the establishment of a systematic, scientific, and comprehensive institutional mechanism, to innovate the ways and means of ideological and political work, and to effectively enhance the attractiveness and appeal of party-building activities. This paper takes information fusion technology as the basis, promotes the construction of a three-dimensional platform for party-building information, and proposes ideological and political communication channels for party-building. It constructs an evaluation index system for the level of party-building activities, solves the weight of each index using the improved entropy weighting method, builds a comprehensive evaluation model for the level of party-building activities combined with gray correlation analysis, and introduces a multivariate linear regression model to analyze the specific impact of ideological and political work on the development of party-building activities. Taking University Y as the research object, the effectiveness of the three-dimensional platform for party-building on the development of its party-building activities was analyzed in depth, and a comprehensive evaluation analysis of the level of its party-building activities was conducted. It was found that the level of party-building activities carried out in universities increased by 57.23% between 2014 and 2023, and the quality of party-building activities carried out in universities would be enhanced by 0.648 units for every unit of increase in the level of ideological and political work. Combining the party-building activities of colleges and universities with network informatization and optimizing the form of the development of ideological and political work based on the information technology platform in depth can effectively promote the high-quality development of party-building activities in colleges and universities.

Exploring the Ideas of Integrating the Teaching of Information Technology and English Translation

Abstract The intelligent use of digital teaching resources and the deep penetration of information technology can help promote the change and development of English teaching and improve the sharing, interactivity, interestingness and effectiveness of English translation teaching resources. This paper develops an intelligent classroom teaching model for English translation that combines scaffolding and multimodal discourse teaching using the U Campus teaching platform. To create an intelligent learning environment for English translation, this paper uses distributed crawler technology to crawl English teaching resources and Minhash algorithm to de-weight and optimize the data, constructs an English translation corpus, and introduces a lightweight Transformer network to establish a machine translation model. This paper quantitatively analyzes the teaching effect of the English translation smart classroom teaching model using data from University C students as the research object. The results of the study show that the students in class A1 scored 95.02 points in topic comprehension, the translation theory and skills improved by 8.46 points compared with the students in class A2, and there was a significant difference between the students’ cross-cultural communication skills at the 1% level. By integrating the information technology platform with English translation teaching, students’ translation skills can be enhanced, they can learn more English resources, and their intercultural knowledge and competence can be improved.

Innovation and Exploration of Human Resource Management in Pharmaceutical Enterprises of the 21st Century

Purpose - The 21st century marks an era of rapid advancements in digitization, informatization and globalization. Amidst a fast-evolving market economy, the lag in Human Resource Management (HRM) within pharmaceutical companies significantly hampers corporate growth. The primary objective of this paper is to explore the issue of HRM lag.
 Design/Methodology/Approach - Grounded in corporate management theory, this paper conducts a literature review coupled with HRM theory, taking a particular pharmaceutical company as a case study. It identifies six major issues present in pharmaceutical HRM: unclear functional positioning of the HRM department, insufficient staffing in the HR department, be short of effective talent cultivation mechanisms, incomplete salary management system, outdated performance incentive policies, and absence of modern information technology platform support. Therefore, six recommendations are proposed.
 Findings - Engaging professional HRM consultants for HR transformation, redefining the HR department’s functions, enhancing the professionalism of HR practitioners, establishing competitive salary and incentive mechanisms, advancing the application of modern information technology, and developing modern talent management models are innovations that can significantly bolster the comprehensive management capability of the enterprise.
 Research Implications - This study contributes to elevating the strategic positioning and management capability of the HR department, playing a pivotal role in shaping a high-value talent empowerment platform. It also provides a foundation for subsequent research by other scholars in this field.

Informatization as a Driver for the Development of Agricultural Exports in Russia

It has been established that informatization which is “end-to-end” in nature increases the connectivity of the world economy in general and its regional and sectoral subsystems. This is good for development of exports of products and services. The implementation of information technology platforms created with the use of modern informatization technologies is a driver for the development of export activities of agricultural enterprises while the platform informatization should cover the majority of agricultural exporters from near and far abroad.

USE OF VIDEO-BASED DATA TO INFORM PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Abstract The pandemic has accelerated technological developments in care services. Emerging evidence suggests feasibility of delivering evidence-based psychosocial interventions such as group cognitive stimulation therapy using information and communication technology (ICT) platforms. A unique opportunity offered by ICT is the more readily available data at session level to investigate nuanced, theoretically based outcome predictors, to improve efficacy of these complex interventions. Theoretically, the cognitive and wellbeing benefits of group cognitive stimulation therapy is related to the level of person-centred engagement. As part of an ongoing randomised controlled trial involving ICT-delivered group cognitive stimulation therapy, this study examines the use of big data analytics of session behavioural data to develop predictive algorithms of cognitive and wellbeing outcomes. In 78 people living with mild to moderate dementia from 26 groups, we create automatically estimated markers of facial expression and eye movement pattern, and hand-coded markers (using time-sampling method) of engagement level and speech/verbal production information, to autobiographical information presented in the session. These markers are used to predict changes in cognitive and wellbeing outcomes. Pilot analysis using hand-coded speech sample suggested strong correlation between time-sampled engagement level with cognitive benefits, and changes in information content and fluency with cognitive benefits after the group intervention (ranging from r=0.76 to 0.97, p< 0.001). The markers we develop in this study using video-based data from ICT-delivered therapy sessions, including deep learning-based emotion recognition and eye movement analysis with hidden Markov model, allow further application in understanding the mechanisms of action in different psychosocial interventions.

Quality-integrated diagnostic platform for aerospace complex product assembly processes

Addressing the challenge of tracing and quantifying quality issues that emerge during the assembly process of intricate aviation products, this paper introduces a Quality-Integrated Diagnostic Platform (QIDP). The platform effectively merges machine learning algorithms with the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) to provide comprehensive solutions for complex aviation product quality assessment. Firstly, the viability of amalgamating assembly quality management with the random forest diagnostic algorithm is presented. Secondly, leveraging the attributes inherent to the intricate assembly process, alongside algorithmic model development and the underpinning of an information technology platform, a novel architecture is introduced for diagnosing the sources of quality issues within the aviation complex component assembly process. Then, building upon the architectural framework, this paper elucidates the design and implementation procedure of the diagnostic algorithm that amalgamates the FAHP with the random forest technique. To illustrate, the bushing assembly process within the aerospace sector is taken as an example. Finally, grounded in the model framework and fusion algorithm, the Assembly Process QIDP is conceived and actualized. The platform seamlessly integrates data provisioning and retrieval components for initial deployment within the aerospace cluster. These components encompass data acquisition, data processing, algorithmic construction, and the visualization of diagnostic outcomes. The achieved diagnostic results effectively fulfill expert evaluation criteria and offer a swift, pragmatic, and intelligent resolution for addressing quality fluctuations within the assembly process of aerospace enterprises.

The Impact of Digital Finance on Tourism in Putuo Mountain

Digital finance is a contemporary financial paradigm that leverages information technology and Internet platforms for the execution of financial transactions and operations. Putuoshan, being one of the renowned Buddhist mountains in China, attracts a significant number of devotees and tourists. The advent of digital finance is expected to offer Putuoshan improved payment systems, wealth management options, and financial services, thereby positively influencing its economic growth and augmenting its tourism sector. The literature review approach is primarily employed to synthesize and assess the extant research findings through the collection, organization, and analysis of relevant literature. This process furnishes both theoretical and empirical substantiation for the research inquiries at hand. Digital finance plays a crucial role in mitigating the service-related challenges faced by the tourism industry. The findings indicate that the utilization of big data and mobile payment in the realm of digital finance has a substantial impact on the promotion of the tourism industry in Putuo Mountain. Based on this premise, digital finance plays a significant role in enhancing the tourism experience of travelers visiting Putuo Mountain. The advent of digital banking technology has significantly enhanced the visitor experience and revitalized classic tourist destinations such as Putuo Mountain.
