Prospects for the development of internet business in the domestic transport industry

Information technology and digital economy present new opportunities for all sectors of the economy, including transport. Today, transport economics is undergoing fundamental changes as a result of the rapid development of information technology and its use is also very fast. Especially the dynamics of the development of informatics and its products and transport business development opportunities based on the use of Internet technology have enabled the growth of the role and importance of using information technology in business processes in terms of the new economy or digital economy. The world economy has changed due to the great development and application of this technology. Transport enterprises are forced to survive in a modern economy where the global market is characterized by competition, diversity of products and services and short cycle life of the product. In terms of the digital economy, information technology creates opportunities for specialization and cooperation between transport companies from different regions by reducing transaction costs, creating ease of access to foreign markets and facilitating the development of new models of electronic business. The purpose of this paper is to present the importance of information technology in economy of transport industry, computerization trends and the opportunities offered by this technology where consumers have quick and easy access on the global market of transport service, as well as in information about goods and services. In the condition of digital economy, the usage of information technology provide businesses with new opportunities to access global markets and also develop business activities on-line. The full realization of these potentials is essential for new transport enterprises and companies which can compete and create competitive advantage globally.

Review of monopoly models and implications for antitrust

In February 2021, the Ministry of Commerce Anti-monopoly Bureau of the People’s Republic of China released the Antitrust Guidelines for the Platform Economy Industry. This announcement signaled more governmental supervision and governance with Internet-related business. In practice, tech giants have been suffering administrative penalties one after another. This study presents a review and analysis of the research literature on the monopoly quantitative models, outlining the components and concluding the implications for anti-monopoly. This paper delineates three main research topics relating to the monopoly models within the literature: the oligopoly, monopolistic competition, and Internet platform monopoly. The Cournot model, Bertrand model, Stackelberg model, and Innovational model represent the oligopoly studies when a small group of large sellers dominates the market. We then discuss the monopolistic competition models as the Krugman model, D-S Model, and Lancaster Model. We pay particular attention to the platform economy to reflect the new era of monopoly with Marshall’s Dilemma. After the summary and comparison of the literature research trajectory, our analysis culminates in implications for antitrust: why Internet corporations and government meet this monopoly predicament, who are involved by monopoly policy, how consumers and market got impacted, and what countermeasures could be taken to improve the antitrust. This study contributes to overview the development of monopoly models and critically analyze based on the current antitrust situation and trend of platform economy integration. We should scrutinize the feasibility to adopt engrain view of monopoly mechanisms as benefit loss on the information technology economy. Therefore, this research raises the novel question and synergistic effects of monopoly.

Information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and economic growth: A causality evinced by cross-country panel data

This study examines certain long-run relationships hypothesised to be present among per capita real GDP, information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, consumer price index, labour force participation rate, and gross fixed capital formation manifest in G-20 countries recorded for the 2001–2012 period. Using panel cointegration, the study finds that the variables are cointegrated and do not drift apart in the long run. Methodology using vector error correction models (VECM) further confirms that embellishment of ICT infrastructure – an apparent imperative in an economy's information technology (IT) policy formulation – for both fixed broadband and internet users causes a boost in the per capita GDP.

Abstract: Our time has become one of the most important eras , which saw a major development in the field of economy through the use of information technology in economy even that our time -the time of information and communication - not only due to the eruption of information phenomenon but it was for the information technology the greatest impact in developing the professional careers and changing the concept of Economy from the traditional era to its new one in the modern . and the greatest feature of information technology effect lies in Economy , yes, Economy is the engine that draws communities and its characteristics as if the industrial technological development is the way towards the coordination of the basic and economical structure and the establishment of the revolution new society . A survey of information technology governance capability in five jurisdictions using the ISO 38500:2008 framework

This survey comparing information technology (IT) governance capability against the international standard ISO 38500:2008 for corporate governance of IT was carried out separately in five jurisdictions: Argentina, El Salvador, Malaysia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and attempts to position ISO 38500 and the key concepts for governance of IT in the twenty-first century. The findings of the survey may be used to inform organisational policies, procedures and practices that will hopefully lead to the development of sustainable business practices through responsible IT governance (ITG) that reflect the interests of all stakeholders. The survey is significant given the current global trend of outsourcing, cloud computing, e-business and IT economy, as well as the increasingly dominant roles that IT plays in helping organisations improve the efficiency and productivity of their business. The survey should assist board directors and senior managers to formulate and implement effective strategies to align and integrate technology, operations, strategies, structures, culture and human resources in ITG. The findings should hopefully provide a greater understanding of the important issues involved in ITG and management within industry and business contexts.

Attitudes towards information ethics: a view from Egypt

PurposeThe information technology (IT) related ethical issues will only increase in frequency and complexity with the increasing diffusion of IT in economies and societies. The purpose of this paper is to explore Egyptian students' attitudes towards the information ethics issues of privacy, access, property, and accuracy, and it evaluates the possible impact of a number of personal characteristics on such attitudes.Design/methodology/approachThis research utilized a cross‐sectional sample and data set to test five hypotheses. It adopted an instrument to collect the respondents' background information and assess their attitudes towards the information ethics issues of privacy, property, accuracy, and access. Egyptian business students at Alexandria University were asked to participate in the survey. A total of 305 responses were collected and analyzed.FindingsThe analysis revealed that students are sensitive to the ethicality of information privacy, information accuracy, and information access. However, students are insensitive to the ethicality of property (software) right. In addition, years of education have a main effect on students' attitudes towards property, and gender and age have an interaction effect on students' attitudes towards access.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research are based on a cross‐sectional data set collected from a sample of business students at a public university. Students, however, may make poor surrogates for business or IT professionals. Future similar research designs that employ large samples from Egyptian working professionals and students in other private and public universities are needed to verify the findings of this research.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest that the investigated university as well as the other similar Egyptian universities should consider integrating ethics education into their curricula. Teaching information ethics, especially from an Islamic perspective, is expected to positively influence students' information ethical attitudes. The enforcement of the existing property right protection laws should also curb software piracy in the Egyptian market.Originality/valueIt is vital to expand the ethical research currently being performed in IT in order to help bridge the gap between behavior and IT. The findings of this research extend the understanding of students' attitudes towards the information ethics issues in Egyptian culture and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on global information ethics.

Commuting patterns of employees in the Information Technology and traditional manufacturing sectors of Bangalore, India

Rapid growth of the Information Technology (IT) sector in Bangalore, India, has transformed the city’s urban-industrial landscape since the liberalization of India's economy in 1991. The city's IT sector is closely integrated with a global system of production and caters largely to a global clientele. Apart from the impact of these developments on urban form, there are indications that they are causing uneven growth patterns and socio-economic polarization, which has resulted in different travel patterns in the work force. This paper compares the commuting patterns of employees in two types of firms, an IT multinational corporation and a traditional public-sector-unit (PSU), using data from a survey. Regression models show that there is a significant increase in travel cost as income rises for a sample of employees of the IT sector, even though travel distance is not influenced by income. The reverse holds true for a sample of employees of the PSU—rising income significantly increases distance though income does not affect travel cost. Behavioral choice models also show that with increasing income IT employees are more likely to choose two-wheelers and cars for commuting while PSU employees are more likely to choose public buses or walk to work. The paper suggests that Bangalore's services-oriented IT economy is magnifying differences in work commuting patterns relative to those in the traditional manufacturing economy. The IT economy is also transforming travel behavior in terms of work travel mode choices among socio-economic groups.

Neoliberalism, urbanism and the education economy: producing Hyderabad as a ‘global city’

This paper examines the emergence of Hyderabad as a hub of the global information technology economy, and in particular, the role of higher education in Hyderabad's transformation as the labor market for the new economy. The extensive network of professional education institutions that service the global economy illustrates the ways in which neoliberal globalization is produced through educational restructuring and new modes of urban development. Neoliberal globalization, however, is a variegated process wherein local social hierarchies articulate with state policies and global capital. This study shows how caste and class relations in the education sector in Andhra Pradesh are instrumental to forming Hyderabad's connection to the global economy. The contradictions of these regional realignments of education, geography and economy are manifest in the uneven development of the region and the rise of new socio-political struggles for the right to the city.

New center for IT research

August 1, 2002 marked the launch of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Science and Technology Center (STC) on Materials and Devices for Information Technology Research (MDITR). The Center will strive to develop new materials and device concepts that will complement existing semiconductor and inorganic electronic and photonic materials in information technology (IT). An initial five_year award of $18.35 million supports this development and the training of a workforce capable of implementing that technology. Education, human resource development, and technology transfer are also important components of this Center and approximately 30% of the NSF funding is committed to these activities. The motivation for creating such a center is quite obvious. Despite the ‘dot com’ crash, IT continues to be the fastest growing and dominant component of world economy. Computing power and the ability to rapidly move information around the world are, of course, important drivers of that IT economy.

A comparison and critical assessment of Porat and Rubin's information economy and Wallis and North's transaction sector

This paper compares two approaches to the measurement of the resources devoted to the organisational task in the economy, i.e. Porat and Rubin's `information economy' and Wallis and North's `transaction sector'. While there have been a number of studies using the information economy approach, it seems to have made way to a narrower focus on the information technology economy in recent years. The quantitative measurement of the transaction sector, on the other hand, again focuses on the wider issues involved in information activities, e.g. organisational and institutional questions. However, it is only in its infancy. Being based on a well-known theory, i.e. transaction cost economics, it might attract attention from a larger number of economists than does the information economy approach. The paper points out similarities and shortcomings of both approaches and indicates areas for further research. ©1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
