Examining consumer behavior towards adoption of quick response code mobile payment systems: transforming mobile payment in the fintech industry

The quick response (QR) code-enabled mobile payment has gained large attention from academicians and policymakers due to its fast, convenience, and usefulness. However, acceptance of this technology among consumers is limited and rare in a few cases. Therefore, current research attempts to gain insight into factors that influence consumer behavior to adopt QR code-enabled mobile payment. This research has developed an integrated research framework that combines the technology acceptance model, theory of reasoned action, transaction speed, convenience, and innovativeness to investigate consumer behavior to adopt QR code mobile payment. In addition to that moderating effect of transaction speed is tested between consumer attitude and intention to adopt QR code-driven mobile payment. This study empirically investigates consumer attitudes and intention to adopt the QR mobile payment system with 216 responses. Findings of the statistical analysis have revealed that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, convenience, subjective norms, and innovativeness explained a substantial variance R2\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$${R}^{2}$$\\end{document} 52.3% in measuring user attitude to adopt QR code-enabled mobile payment. Practically, this study suggests that policymakers should pay attention to perceived convenience, transaction speed, subjective norm, and perceived usefulness to boost consumer attitude and intention to adopt QR-enabled mobile payment. This study is unique as it integrates the technology acceptance model and theory of reasoned action to investigate consumer behavior towards the adoption of QR code mobile payment. This study is also valuable as it examines the moderating effect of transaction speed between consumer attitude to accept QR code and their intention to adopt QR code-driven mobile payment and adds a new dimension to information system literature.

A qualitative systematic review of trust in technology

Although many information systems (IS) scholars have researched the antecedents and consequences of trust in technology, the sheer amount of work published, authors’ use of inconsistent construct terms, and variations in conceptualization and measurement make it difficult to compare and aggregate findings across studies. To provide scholars with an overview of the literature, we performed a systematic qualitative review of the IS literature. The goal of our review was to identify the antecedents and consequences of trust in technology that have received frequent empirical support, as well as those for which the evidence is not yet conclusive. To that end, we curated a glossary of unique construct terms and summarized the results of 241 relationships tested in 62 empirical research articles (both quantitative and qualitative) from the AIS “Basket of Eight” journals. From these, we identified 62 unique relationships: 22 are well-supported, 6 are supported by suggestive evidence, and 34 have received little support. These relationships summarize what is well-known and less well-known within the literature. By taking stock, we prepare a path for future research on the phenomenon of trust in the context of emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence and blockchain). We conclude the paper with opportunities and directions for future research.

Optimism bias in susceptibility to phishing attacks: an empirical study

Purpose Researchers looking for ways to change the insecure behaviour that results in phishing have considered multiple possible reasons for such behaviour. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to understand the role of optimism bias (OB – defined as a cognitive bias), which characterises overly optimistic or unrealistic individuals, to ensure secure behaviour. Research that focused on issues such as personality traits, trust, attitude and Security, Education, Training and Awareness (SETA) was considered. Design/methodology/approach This study built on a recontextualized version of the theory of planned behaviour to evaluate the influence that optimism bias has on phishing susceptibility. To model the data, an analysis was performed on 226 survey responses from a South African financial services organisation using partial least squares (PLS) path modelling. Findings This study found that overly optimistic employees were inclined to behave insecurely, while factors such as attitude and trust significantly influenced the intention to behave securely. Practical implications Our contribution to practice seeks to enhance the effectiveness of SETA by identifying and addressing the optimism bias weakness to deliver a more successful training outcome. Originality/value Our study enriches the Information Systems literature by evaluating the effect of a cognitive bias on phishing susceptibility and offers a contextual explanation of the resultant behaviour.

Behavioral dedication, constraint or obligation? A tripartite model of active participation in multiplayer online battle arena game community

PurposeActive participation is critical to the survival and development of the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game community. However, this issue has not received much attention in the information systems literature. To address this issue, we develop a tripartite model that accounts for the roles of behavioral dedication, constraint, obligation mechanisms on active participation in the MOBA community.Design/methodology/approachThe research model is empirically validated by online survey data among 971 users of a popular MOBA community.FindingsThe results show that perceived enjoyment, perceived escapism, and affective commitment are key behavioral dedication factors, which further promote active participation in the MOBA community. In addition, past investment, self-efficacy for change, and calculative commitment are important behavioral constraint factors, which ultimately influence active participation in the MOBA community. Finally, subjective norm, group norm, social identity, and normative commitment are influential behavioral obligation factors, which in turn facilitate active participation in the MOBA community.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the theoretical understanding of active participation in the MOBA community and offers practical guidance for promoting active participation in the community.

Large-Scale Agile Project Management in Safety-Critical Industries: A Case Study on Challenges and Solutions

ABSTRACT While agile project management offers benefits such as faster time to market and improved collaboration, scaling it to larger projects presents challenges, particularly in safety-critical industries. This research provides insights into the resistance to agile adoption due to regulatory constraints and other barriers. The findings contribute to information systems literature by identifying four challenges (organizational, technological, behavioral, regulatory) and complementing solutions to show how large-scale agile can work in safety-critical industries.

The study of social commerce in Generation Z context: the role of social support and privacy risk

PurposeThe recent proliferation of social media platforms has witnessed a growth in social commerce by using social media to facilitate interactivity between customers and vendors. While emergent studies on social commerce are growing, their focus tends to be on millennials and cross-age groups. Given the growth of digital natives in shaping the online shopping experience of the future, we deemed an application to Generation Z necessary and overdue.Design/methodology/approachWe draw on the existing literature and develop a framework to understand social commerce dynamics for digital natives. We employ PLS and CB-SEM to test our proposed model.FindingsOur findings demonstrate the importance of social commerce information sharing activities in facilitating social support, a sense of warmth and belongingness, and online trust for Generation Z platform users. We also investigate the roles of online trust and perceived risk on intention to purchase and find support for both relationships. Finally, we discuss the findings in terms of theoretical and managerial contributions and conclude the study with limitations and future research directions.Originality/valueThis research is unique by using social commerce theory to explore Gen Z platform users. The finding will contribute to information system literature by expanding the social commerce research stream.

Digital human resource strategy: Conceptualization, theoretical development, and an empirical examination of its impact on firm performance

Companies increasingly rely on individuals' skills, enthusiasm, and creativity, all the while striving to fully embrace digitalization as an integral aspect of the business. Technological mediation has altered the design and functionality of work, although the Information Systems (IS) literature about human resource management (HRM) provides little empirical evidence of the synergy between the two fields. To shed light on how these interlinked systems generate performance gains, we draw on the sociotechnical perspective to propose the concept of digital HR strategy as an explicit recognition of the fusion and integration of HR processes and digital technologies. This paper also theorizes and empirically demonstrates that a digital HR strategy improves organizational performance. The model is empirically tested using archival data from a sample of 351 firms.

Developing urban infrastructure constructions for increasing e-commerce sales: the moderating roles of aging population

PurposeThe aging population, a higher proportion of older adults (aged 65+), is considered a global and severe problem, while the information systems (IS) literature on detecting the relationship between the aging population and the development of electronic commerce (e-commerce) is limited and insufficient. Hence, the main objective of this paper is to examine whether an aging population can moderate the effect of infrastructure constructions on e-commerce sales and whether an aging population can affect e-commerce sales.Design/methodology/approachTo investigate the relationship between the aging population and e-commerce sales, this study proposes two potential influential mechanisms: moderating the effects of infrastructure development on e-commerce sales and direct influence. Subsequently, a sample of 31 Chinese provinces from 2013 to 2019 is utilized to conduct regression analyses in order to examine these hypotheses.FindingsThe findings suggest that the development of urban transportation infrastructure and network constructions can significantly contribute to the enhancement of e-commerce sales, and the influence cannot be affected by aging population. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that an aging population can have a positive effect on e-commerce sales.Practical implicationsThe findings can inform future infrastructure constructions by assessing the potential of infrastructure projects to boost e-commerce sales and examining whether this effect varies in an aging population context.Originality/valueThe findings substantiate the pivotal role of older adults in the e-commerce industry. Moreover, the obtained results establish a positive relationship between an aging population and e-commerce sales, thereby offering diverse perspectives on existing theories.

The effects of bribery on the digitization of small and medium enterprises in Latin America

AbstractIn this study, we examine the effects of bribery on the digitization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within Latin America. We apply neo‐institutional theory as the overarching theoretical framework to establish that bribery negatively influences digitization. We propose that firm characteristics (i.e., managerial experience and firm size) affect the firm‐level relationship between bribery and digitization. We also examine how the perceived tax burden mediates the effect of bribery on digitization. Our study is both theoretically and practically relevant. Theoretically, we are among the first to explicate the direct relationship between bribery and digitization. This novel perspective extends the information systems literature to explain digitization challenges in Latin America. For managers and policymakers, we present a path towards essential digitization for Latin American SMEs. Our empirical analysis uses secondary data from a World Bank survey of 1549 Latin American SMEs conducted over three years in six countries. Our findings show that bribery negatively influences digitization while SME characteristics positively moderate this relationship. In addition, we show that the perceived tax burden mediates the effects of bribery on digitization.

Healthcare Information Systems (HIS): Implementation Challenges in Developing Countries

In developing nations, the establishment of sustainable healthcare information systems (HIS) is often hindered by insufficient government policies and outdated technology. Bangladesh is a notable example where many patients lack proper healthcare access due to fragmented and non-digitally recorded data. Research has shown that standardized hospital healthcare systems can streamline patient management, increasing the capacity to serve more patients simultaneously. These systems have the potential to improve healthcare in developing nations significantly. This article offers an overview of the key obstacles that impede HIS implementation in these countries. The study looked at relevant information systems literature using a systematic literature review (SLR). The systematic literature review (SLR) was governed by a review process, and relevant studies were gathered from three databases: IEEE Xplore, EBSCO Databases, and ScienceDirect. A total of 4014 papers were initially found. However, only 11 main studies were included for analysis after a careful selection procedure governed by inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study found 24 obstacles to adopting Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) in developing countries, divided into six groups. These obstacles include a lack of financial assistance, inadequate infrastructure, inadequate education and awareness, cultural and political obstacles, reluctance to change, and poor system quality.

Exploring how mumpreneurs use digital platforms' algorithms and mechanisms to generate different types of value

AbstractThis study explores how digital platforms generate economic and non‐economic value for a specific group of users: mumpreneurs. We collected qualitative data from 26 mumpreneurs in the United Kingdom who have caring responsibilities for young children and are running a business on the community‐based platform Instagram. We found that through using Instagram and its algorithms, mumpreneurs can create various types of value in this context. Drawing on previous research into value creation, we make several contributions to the information systems literature. First, we unpack and explain alternative forms of value generated by digital platforms. Our findings show that through community‐based platforms such as Instagram, mumpreneurs can create various types of economic and non‐economic value—engagement, cognitive, economic, and self‐preservation value—that is consistent with their business, social, and personal needs. Second, we propose a process model of value creation; and we identify two mechanisms that lead to value creation through Instagram's algorithms: recommended connectivity and adaptability. Third, we identify a temporal dimension of value creation through Instagram. This article contributes to the theory in the growing body of literature on value creation linked to digital platforms and explains several implications for theory and practice.

Designing as trading-off: a practice-based view on smart service systems

ABSTRACT Posture-related problems, such as back pain, are an increasing global burden. They are deeply intertwined with how humans sit. While the information systems (IS) literature has been relatively silent on this matter, emerging literature in related disciplines has begun to attend to this problem by developing various artefacts. However, researchers have oftentimes done so by basing their artefacts on engineering rationales and attending only limitedly to the interactions between artefacts and humans. These interactions are crucial because data on posture is best collected by placing sensors on humans’ backs. This calls for considering and evaluating how bodies move in relation to sensors, the emotive reactions of humans to sensors and how humans make sense of recommendations emanating from underlying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. We uncover what these considerations of human-centredness mean for designing smart service systems for posture management and suggest that a core consideration relates to trading-off possibilities of smart technologies and necessities emerging from practices. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on designing smart service systems and responds to calls for more IS research dealing with the prevention of chronic health conditions.

A structural equation modeling framework for exploring the industry 5.0 and sustainable supply chain determinants

Sustainable Supply Chain and Industry 5.0 are two important concepts reshaping how businesses operate in the modern world. Together, these two concepts drive the advancement of a highly sustainable and robust worldwide economy. Companies are now becoming more sustainable in supply chain management, using technologies like blockchain and co-bots to track the origin of goods, ensure ethical and sustainable sourcing, and work with humans safely and effectively. This study develops a theoretical model highlighting the determinants of Industry 5.0, Sustainable Supply Chain Practices, by combining theoretical frameworks from the manufacturing, supply chain, and information systems literature. The study's analytic sample comprises 342 responses collected from professionals working in the electronics industry's supply chain. Hypotheses were constructed employing deductive reasoning, leveraging insights gleaned from prior research. The study is conducted utilizing the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to substantiate the presumed connections among various constructs, namely, Industry 5.0 innovations, Sustainable Supply Chain Practices (SSCP), Sustainable Supply Chain Performance (SCP), and Supply Chain Risks (SCR). The Structural Equation Modeling analysis results show a direct impact of Industry 5.0 technologies through Sustainable Supply Chain Practices can enhance Supply Chain Performance and mitigate Supply Chain Risks. Combining the two paradigms can foster the development of new business models that prioritize sustainability and contribute to a more equitable and environmentally friendly economy that brings positive change for both businesses and society.

AI and the metaverse in the workplace: DEI opportunities and challenges

PurposeThe metaverse, through artificial intelligence (AI) systems and capabilities, allows considerable data analysis in the workplace, largely exceeding traditional people analytics data collection. While concerns over surveillance and issues associated with privacy and discrimination have been raised, the metaverse has the potential to offer opportunities associated with fairer assessment of employee performance and enhancement of the employee experience, especially with respect to gender and race, inclusiveness and workplace equity. This paper aims at shedding light on the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) opportunities and challenges of implementing the metaverse in the workplace, and the role played by AI.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on our past research on AI and the metaverse and provides insights addressed to human resources (HR) scholars and practitioners.FindingsOur analysis of AI applications to the metaverse in the workplace sheds light on the ambivalent role of and potential trade-offs that may arise with this emerging technology. If used responsibly, the metaverse can enable positive changes concerning the future of work, which can promote DEI. Yet, the same technology can lead to negative DEI outcomes if implementations occur quickly, unsupervised and with a sole focus on efficiencies and productivity (i.e. collecting metrics, models etc.).Practical implicationsManagers and HR leaders should try to be first movers rather than followers when deciding if (or, better, when) to implement metaverse capabilities in their organizations. But how the metaverse is implemented will be strategic. This involves choices concerning the degree of invasive/pervasive monitoring (internal) as well as make or buy decisions concerning outsourcing AI capabilities.Originality/valueOur paper is one among few (to date) that discusses AI capabilities in the metaverse at the intersection of the HR and information systems(IS) literature and that specifically tackles DEI issues. Also, we take a “balanced” approach when evaluating the metaverse from a DEI perspective. While most studies either demonize or celebrate these technologies from an ethical and DEI standpoint, we aim to highlight challenges and opportunities, with the goal to guide scholars and practitioners towards a responsible use of the metaverse in organizations.

Digital Desire Paths: Exploring the Role of Computer Workarounds in Emergent Information Systems Design

ABSTRACT The information systems literature generally conceptualises information system (IS) workarounds as negative disturbances that need to be avoided. IS design literature has emphasised the need to incorporate user behaviour in emergent IS design. Surprisingly, information systems research has kept the literatures on workarounds and IS design separate and remains silent on how workaround behaviour can inform information system design. In this research, we explore six workarounds in two case organisations and analyse the connections between them. We develop the concept of digital desire paths to describe the process how information system designers improve the system design by observing how users use and work around the system. Digital desire paths offer a novel interpretation of workarounds as input for information systems design and thereby serve as instance of the principle of guided emergence in action design research.

Impact of IT governance mechanisms on IT-enabled dynamic capabilities to achieve firm performance: role of moderators

PurposeAlthough information technology (IT) governance and IT capability have been extensively examined, the impact of IT governance mechanisms on IT-enabled dynamic capability (ITDC) with moderators has received less attention. This study investigates how the impact of IT governance mechanisms on firm performance is achieved through an ITDC through the moderating role of IT governance decentralization and a turbulent environment.Design/methodology/approachThis study extends from the traditional view of IT capabilities and integrates dynamic capability theory to propose that IT governance is vital for the ITDC. Path analysis, hierarchical regression analysis and moderation analysis were performed using partial least squares (Smart PLS 3.0) as the data analysis methods. This study empirically tests the proposed mediated moderation model by using data collected from 254 firms in China to test the hypotheses.FindingsSignificant and impactful relationships are found in the model that includes turbulent environment moderating effects. Contrary to expectations, IT governance decentralization is also significant but not very strong.Research limitations/implicationsThis study’s findings have implications for investigating IT governance, IT-enabled capabilities and moderators. Accordingly, this study has implications for board and executive management to capitalize on dynamic IT capability, to keep pace with the challenges and turbulent conditions associated with business needs and for the productivity paradox in the context of Chinese firms.Originality/valueThis country-specific research study theoretically contributes to the IT governance, dynamic capabilities and turbulent environment in the information systems literature and proposes many practical guides to the board and executive management of companies in the Chinese context.

Detecting deception in computer-mediated communication: the role of popularity information across media types

Purpose With the widespread use of online communications, users are extremely vulnerable to a myriad of deception attempts. This study aims to extend the literature on deception in computer-mediated communication by investigating whether the manner in which popularity information (PI) is presented and media richness affects users’ judgments. Design/methodology/approach This study developed a randomized, within and 2 × 3 between-subject experimental design. This study analyzed the main effects of PI and media richness on the imitation magnitude of veracity judges and the effect of the interaction between PI and media richness on the imitation magnitude of veracity judges. Findings The manner in which PI is presented to people affects their tendency to imitate others. Media richness also has a main effect; text-only messages resulted in greater imitation magnitude than those viewed in full audiovisual format. The findings showed an interaction effect between PI and media richness. Originality/value The findings of this study contribute to the information systems literature by introducing the notion of herd behavior to judgments of truthfulness and deception. Also, the medium over which PI was presented significantly impacted the magnitude of imitation tendency: PI delivered through text-only medium led to a greater extent of imitation than when delivered in full audiovisual format. This suggests that media richness alters the degree of imitating others’ decisions such that the leaner the medium, the greater the expected extent of imitation.

The Concept of a Smart Action – Results from Analyzing Information Systems Literature

In recent years, the term 'smartness' has entered widespread use in research and daily life. It has emerged with various applications of the Internet of Things, such as smart homes and smart factories. However, rapid technological development and careless use of the term mean that, in information systems (IS) research, a common understanding of smartness has not yet been established. While it is recognized that smartness encompasses more than the use of impressive information technology applications, a unified conceptualization of how smartness is manifested in IS research is lacking. To this end, we conducted a structured literature review applying techniques from Grounded Theory. We found that smartness occurs through actions, in which smart things and individuals interact, process information, and make data-based decisions that are perceived as smart. Building on these findings, we propose the concept of a 'smart action' and derive a general definition of smartness. Our findings augment knowledge about how smartness is formed, offering a new perspective on smartness. The concept of a smart action unifies and increases understanding of 'smartness' in IS research. It supports further research by providing a concept for describing, analyzing, and designing smart actions, smart devices, and smart services.

Nuanced but important: A literature-based comparison between B2B and B2C platforms

This paper compares the potential characteristics of B2B platforms as identified in the information systems literature with those in the general platform literature. Our analysis reveals that these characteristics are not exclusive to B2B platforms and suggests that the differences between B2B and B2C platforms may be more subtle. Moreover, it remains unclear whether these differences serve as success factors for B2B platforms or merely represent the current approaches of the platforms under examination. We identified five potential differences that warrant further investigation. Therefore, this literature-based comparison lays the groundwork for further research on supporting decision-making when building a B2B platform ecosystem or joining a B2B platform ecosystem. Especially important is the fact that building on insights from B2C could lead to wrong decisions and platform failure or unintended outcomes for participants. Thereby the study contributes to understanding of the unique aspects of digital B2B platforms and has implications for B2B platform managers and policymakers because the presence of these ecosystems can considerably influence competitive dynamics in markets.

Attention to Digital Innovation: Exploring the Impact of a Chief Information Officer in the Top Management Team

We draw on the attention-based view of the firm to examine whether and when the presence of a CIO in the TMT has a positive effect on both firms’ ideated digital innovation (IDI) (i.e., the intensity of firms’ digital patenting activity) and commercialized digital innovation (CDI) (i.e., the digital sophistication of firms’ new products). Building on the idea that attention processes are context dependent, we also explore the moderating roles of CEO characteristics (IT background and role tenure) as well as environmental characteristics (the industry’s IT attention). We analyze data from a cross-industry panel of U.S. S&P 500 firms over eight years that includes up to 2,852 firm-year observations. The results indicate that CIO presence in the TMT is positively related to a firm’s IDI and CDI. Furthermore, they show that the organizational context related to CEO characteristics moderates the CIO-CDI relationship and that the environmental context related to the industry’s IT attention moderates the CIO-IDI relationship. Our research contributes to the information systems literature by providing robust evidence that CIO presence in the TMT positively influences a firm’s digital innovation outcomes, showing how internal and external boundary conditions affect the work of CIOs, and elaborating the role of managerial attention as an underlying mechanism explaining digital innovation.
