Many studies have examined the value of strategic alignment on company’s performance in general, though the study of the information system value on other factors such as efficiency and productivity are still limited. The purpose of the study is to examine freight transportation related to its business strategy, information system strategy, Website information system effectiveness, organizational culture, and organizational effectiveness. The sample of the study was taken from 30 goods transportation companies. The data collection used 150 respondents consist of 50 academicians and 100 practitioners. The data analysis used hierarchical regression. The results show that the level of alignment of business strategy and information system affects the level of users’ satisfaction of the company’s website information system. The results also show that the level of users’ satisfaction of Web information system mediates the relationship between business strategy and information system of the company’s efficiency and productivity. The research findings do not support the role of organizational culture as a moderator of the relationship between Website information system and organizational effectiveness, although it shows the positive relationship between these variables.

Perencanaan Strategis Sistem Informasi Sekolah Menengah Atas Menggunakan Ward Peppard

The implementation of the information system requires strategic planning in an organization so that the benefits of implementing an information system can be felt more optimally, this will be applied to high school schools in Jakarta. The problems faced by schools are quite diverse, starting with the management of school data to performance evaluations and the need for an integrated system for each division to support the organization's business processes. Strategic planning is made with targeted targets such as alignment of information systems in academic & non-academic processes and school data management, improving performance in infrastructure management, and increasing competitiveness by creating a website-based system for school promotion. Goals can be achieved by aligning the information system strategy with the organization's business strategy. To determine the information system strategy, the organization's current business strategy is needed. This information system strategic planning research was conducted using the Ward Peppard method. This method helps to be able to understand the organization more deeply before strategic planning is made. It includes SWOT analysis, Value Chain, PEST, Critical Success Factor, and Mcfarlan's Strategic Grid analysis in the form of strategy recommendations from the results of internal and external environmental analysis of school information systems, and application portfolios will be mapped to be applied to school organizations to achieve expected business goals

Unintentional Programs: An Interproject Orientation for Aligning IT with Organizational Strategy

This study proposes program orientation as an organizational culture that motivates organizations to manage interrelated projects like a program without a formal structure or program team. We hold that collaboration, with cooperation and coordination as its main elements, plays a critical role in aligning interrelated projects dynamically. The empirical results support our hypotheses that program orientation indirectly affects information systems alignment with interproject cooperation, coordination, and adaptability mediating its effects. This study thus confirms the benefit of treating interrelated projects as a program, even when they are not governed by a formal program structure.

Conceptual data systems architecture principles for information systems

Information systems alignment with enterprise evolution affects the performance of enterprises. The systems conceptual and data quality, development time and sustainable life cycle management, are issues for enterprise competitiveness. The ability to directly generate enterprise information systems from models has been thought of as a solution to improve on these issues. Model-driven systems have been a research topic for decades. Fundamental principles for a proven model-driven information systems architecture are outlined in this article. Architectural foundation is a separation of user communities conceptual domain from the information technical domain. The users domain is modeled as an information system model in three layers, conceptual data logic model, interface model and user community model. The technical domain is a platform, allowing the modeling and execution of such a model. These principles have been applied in practice and proven viable. Two platforms and applications, which adhere to these principles, are briefly described.

Health Information System and Health Care Applications Performance in the Healthcare Arena: A Bibliometric Analysis.

There have been several studies centred on health information systems with many insights provided to enhance health care applications globally. These studies have provided theoretical schemes for fortifying the enactment and utilisation of the Health Information System (HIS). In addition, these research studies contribute greatly to the development of HIS in alignment with major stakeholders such as health practitioners and recipients of health care. Conversely, there has been trepidation about HIS' sustainability and resilience for healthcare applications in the era of digitalization and globalization. Hence, this paper investigates research on HIS with a primary focus on health care applications to ascertain its sustainability and resilience amidst the transformation of the global healthcare space. Therefore, using a bibliometric approach, this paper measures the performance of health information systems and healthcare for health care applications using bibliometric data from the web of science database. The findings reveal solid evidence of the constructive transformation of health information systems and health care applications in the healthcare arena, providing ample evidence of the adaptation of HIS and health care applications within the healthcare arena to the fourth industrial revolution and, additionally, revealing the resilient alignment of health care applications and health information systems.

Model Enterprise Architecture for Information Technology Services in Universities

Enterprise Architecture Documents are very important in the development of Information Technology systems in an institution. The Enterprise Architecture contains a strategic plan for the development of ICT and the services that will be run by the system. The preparation of the IS/IT strategic plan at Universitas Negeri Manado is a step in aligning information systems and technology in accordance with the Universitas Negeri Manado business processes and strategies. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research using primary and secondary data and building an information technology enterprise architecture using the TOGAF framework model. Collecting data with interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and direct observation of the organization. The analysis used is the Value Chain, SWOT, PEST, Porter's Five Force, and Critical Success Factor (CSF) methods. The results of this study are the form or formulation of the Enterprise Architecture strategic plan of IS/IT in accordance with the Universitas Negeri Manado, in the form of data architecture, applications, and technology to support the business processes of Universitas Negeri Manado.

Evolving competencies to align electronic medical records - adynamic resource-based perspective on hospitals' co-evolutionary information systems alignment capability.

Advanced Electronic Medical Records (EMR) provide many potential benefits to hospitals. However, because of their broad scope, many stakeholders deal with the EMR and a continuous effort has to be made to keep up with internal and external change. Therefore, hospitals need to deliberately shape their organizational competencies considering the pursuit of alignment, i.e. making sure that the EMR remains optimally aligned with strategies, goals and needs of the hospital and its stakeholders. This paper aims to investigate the evolutionary paths of these alignment competencies and their drivers, from a theoretical perspective of co-evolutionary information systems alignment (COISA). This paper reports on a longitudinal multiple case study of three Dutch hospitals which each recently implemented an advanced EMR system. The authors conducted 35 in-depth interviews in 2 phases (before and after go-live of the EMR), and studied documentation related to the EMR implementations. The findings show that each hospital's COISA capability shows a different evolutionary path. However, two of the three case hospitals ended up coordinating part of their COISA capability to an ecosystem level, i.e. they incorporated other hospitals using the same EMR system to coordinate their alignment efforts, either from an operational perspective, or in terms of orchestration and strategy. The found evolutionary paths' key drivers include "stakeholder initiative", "accumulating experience", "driving events" and "emerging issues". The findings help healthcare practitioners to deliberately shape their organization's COISA capability in pursuit of EMR alignment. Furthermore, the authors add to the knowledge base on co-evolutionary approaches to alignment through the longitudinal approach.

Factors Affecting Dynamic Strategic Alignment in a Changing Environment: A Case Study of a Chinese SOE

Abstract Environmental factors significantly affect the dynamic strategic alignment of information systems (IS) in coping with a rapidly changing environment, especially for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in emerging economies. By examining the case study of a medium-sized Chinese state-owned real estate company, this research aims to investigate what environmental factors affect SOEs’ strategic alignment. The thematic analysis method was used to analyse semi-structured interviews with staffs at all levels of the organisation and relevant strategy documents. The research develops a holistic model to illustrate the influencing factors from SOEs’ internal (i.e., organisational structure, culture and resources) and external environments (i.e., politics, economy, technology and national culture) while highlighting the overall influences from the nature of SOEs. It identifies that organisational resources, whose easy access is enabled by SOEs’ state-owned character, significantly reduce the need for strategic alignment to gain competitive advantage in the short term. In addition, SOEs’ inherent attributes of organisational structure and culture impede the social and structural integration between business and IT. Managerial implications are suggested with a particular emphasis on internal factors, such as developing IS/IT from organisational resources and cultivating the perception of the importance of IS. The paper also points to the importance of implementing government authorities’ policies and instructions about IS strategy.

Maturity Business Process Management at Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais

Purpose: This study aims to assess the maturity of Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais in business process management.Theoretical framework: Business Process Management is an alternative to the standard departmentalized structure. This alternative presents Maturity in Processes as the degree of explicit definition, management, measurement, control and effectiveness that a process has. Thus, this Maturity excels in assessing the current situation in order to direct improvement initiatives and control the development of what is being measured.Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected through a questionnaire, obtaining a sample of 729 respondents, and the data was analyzed using the structural equation modeling technique.Findings: The company being studied is at level 4, and is called quantitatively managed, where the promotion of actions to recognize those responsible for the processes and alignment of information systems to customer needs are some of the actions needed to increase this stage.Research, Practical & Social implications: Through the maturity identified, Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais can promote actions to improve its processes, resulting in social impacts arising from the provision of services to the community.Originality/value: From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes by making use of a maturity model and by showing its results for comparisons between companies; because, empirically, it contributes to that company so that it is aware of its current stage and actions to increase that stage.Keywords: BPM; business process management; BPMMM; maturity model; electrical sector.

Exploring the factors in aligning information systems and organizational strategies in tall organizational structures in an uncertain environment

AbstractFactors affecting the alignment of information systems (ISs) and organizational strategies (i.e., strategic alignment) vary depending on the organizational contexts, comprising both the structural and environmental contexts. Previous studies of strategic alignment were largely focused on organizations with flatter organizational structures and low environmental uncertainty. Therefore, findings from previous studies might not be applicable to organizations with tall organizational structures and in uncertain environments, like Iranian organizations. To this end, we aimed to discover less‐explored factors in achieving strategic alignment based on the contexts of Iranian organizations, using grounded theory. We conducted semi‐structured interviews with 29 experts in different organizations to illustrate and substantiate the development of an eightfold framework that specifies the factors for achieving strategic alignment. Specifically, the developed eightfold framework resulted in identification of 8 factors and 51 elements in achieving strategic alignment. Here, we identified five factors in achieving strategic alignment in addition to the factors reported by previous research (i.e., senior management, communication, and partnership), namely IS leadership, IS capabilities, organizational development, human resources, and IT infrastructure. The results indicate that these factors play a prominent role in determining the challenges and discerning the momentous requirements for achieving strategic alignment in organizations with tall structures in uncertain environments.

Modeling the dynamic alignment of business and information systems via the lens of human-centered architecture evolution

The complexity of business and information systems (IS) alignment is a growing concern for researchers and practitioners alike. The extant research on alignment architecture fails to consider the human viewpoint, which makes it difficult to embrace emergent complexity. This paper contributes to the extant literature in the following ways. First, we combine an enterprise architecture (EA) framework with a human viewpoint to address alignment issues in the architecture design phase; second, we describe a dynamic alignment model by developing a human-centered meta-model that explains first- and second-order changes and their effects on alignment evolution. This paper provides better support for the theoretical research and the practical application of dynamic alignment.

A text mining-based review of the literature on dynamic capabilities perspective in information systems research

PurposeWhile the dynamic capabilities perspective is the most cited strategic theory in the information systems field of research, little effort has been made to review and integrate the associate literature of this perspective in the field. Accordingly, this paper aims to systematically analyze the information systems literature on dynamic capabilities and provide a holistic understanding of the topical composition and trend of dynamic capabilities studies in information systems research.Design/methodology/approachUsing latent Dirichlet allocation as the text analysis algorithm, the author conducted a topic modeling of the dynamic capabilities corpus in the information systems field of research to quantitatively review, summarize and classify the prior literature. The review covered 191 articles published on dynamic capabilities between 1998 and 2018 in pioneering information systems journals and conference proceedings.FindingsIn accordance with the topic modeling results, the topical composition of the dynamic capabilities corpus in information systems research dominantly includes seven themes titled T1. Information systems value, T2. Information systems change, T3. Digitalization, T4. Information systems agility, T5. Big data, T6. Information systems innovation and T7. Information systems alignment. Also, the overall and topical trend of dynamic capabilities studies in the information systems field of research were revealed. The trends indicated that the investigated domain and its prominent sub-domains have generally had positive productivity over the past years.Originality/valueThe current study contributes to the domain by developing knowledge and improving literature on dynamic capabilities in information systems research, discovering the main topics of interest for information systems researchers to deploying the dynamic capabilities perspective in their studies, and prioritizing the future information systems research on dynamic capabilities based on the identified trends of topics.

Information System Strategy Planning in The Private Universities of South Sumatera

Private Universities in South Sumatra Province currently use information systems and information technology in their business processes, but the use of these technologies has not been optimal, resulting in not achieving competitive advantage in running business processes. In this research, the Information System Strategic Planning will be formulated to be implemented in PTS South Sumatra Province with a case study at the Indo Global Mandiri University (UIGM) Palembang. The Information System Strategic Plan that is compiled is oriented to the vision and mission of the organization to align information systems and information technology with the business strategy that is carried out. The Information System Strategic Plan applies the Price Waterhouse Cooper framework, so that this research produces the Strategic Plan Information System in the form of a portfolio of future applications to meet the needs of Private University information systems. The Information System Strategic Plan is expected to be included in the formulation of a business strategic plan so that it can solve the problems faced by Private University.

Subservient to the upper echelon: how information systems managers practice strategic alignment in the public higher education sector

ABSTRACT This article presents a taxonomy that is grounded in the findings of a Strategy-as-Practice (SaP) study undertaken within the public higher education sector. Two cases, operating under the auspices of Ireland’s Institutes of Technology (IIT), were chosen to explore how the alignment of business and information systems (IS) strategies is practiced by IS managers in the public higher education sector. We applied a methodology within the interpretive paradigm that integrates three research pillars comprising integrative framework for SaP, constructivist grounded theory coding and case research methodology. The taxonomy we develop reveals that the IS manager is a functional manager tasked with reducing costs and gaining efficiencies, while being excluded from direct involvement in the development of IS strategy and prevented from liaising directly with the organization’s principal IS services provider. The IS manager depends largely on being able to successfully lay down some mechanisms and practices in his/her efforts to align business and IS strategies. Our study makes a theoretical, practical and methodological contribution to the strategic alignment body of knowledge.

The information technology (IT) has enhanced the effectiveness of the business processes in all sectors. IT has rapidly developed but becomes a technological disruption for the industries too. IT professional decisions are based on specific requirements and user needs. The investment bases are business processes and the IT alignments. The terrestrial border control systems of customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) are still manual. The traveller passports or 'Pas Lintas Batas' (PLB) documents are collected, based on the customers' handwriting on the arrival or departure immigration cards. These are challenging works for the officers in organising the archiving, retrieving data, and developing reports. The researchers use AS-IS and TO-BE methodology within the software development lifecycle and aim to produce an effective, efficient, and secure 'Sistem Informasi Pelintas Batas Wilayah Indonesia' (SINTASWIN) prototype. This prototype application system is user and environmentally friendly, crossplatform, and has a high return on investment.

STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT BETWEEN INFORMATION SYSTEM AND BUSINESS STRATEGY AS PERFORMANCE FACTORS; A REVIEW OF LITERATURE

The subject of information system (IS) strategic alignment is being widely researched; those factors affecting its placement have not been adequately addressed. How information system technology can help improve firm performance is an important research issue in information systems research and a point of concern for top management. This paper intends to review existing literature, analyses the arguments on the issues of the alignment of Information system (IS) with business strategy in order to enhance business or organizational performance. Various approaches and models to achieve this alignment have been postulated and factors affecting alignment of IS where all reviewed to establish a common ground and differences across the journal papers analyzed. This was achieved through a systematic review beginning with literature search on multiple keywords which includes Management information system, strategic alignment, business or organization strategy and performance, paper selection criteria was then used to select appropriate papers. About 47 papers spread across 26 journals where used in the analysis. Resulted are summarized with the aid of simple descriptive statistics. The findings will provide a clear direction on the strategic importance of management information system as a tool for modern business design and expansion. This will benefit both academics and practice as a model for sustainable business development.

An empirical study of the antecedents of data completeness in electronic medical records

There is a body of research that highlights the role of data management to improve the quality of data, which in return improves organizational performance. The literature in data management has indicated the five theoretical constructs used to understand the factors influencing data quality, including top management support, capability on the regulation and process management, business-IT alignment, staff participation, and integration of information systems. However, it is unclear how these theoretical constructs can be utilized to understand the antecedents of data completeness as a dimension of data quality. Following that stream of research, the current paper examines the factors influencing data completeness in electronic medical records (EMR). The scope of this study is by only surveying medical professionals at healthcare settings in northern Nevada. The empirical results reveal that resources should be added as one of the antecedents of data completeness in EMR.
