Impact of information system flexibility and dynamic capabilities in building net zero supply chains

PurposeThe main aim of this study is to explore the relationship between information system flexibility and dynamic capabilities to build sustainable and net zero supply chains under the influence of environmental dynamism.Design/methodology/approachWe have formulated a self-administered survey, with 359 participants contributing responses. Prior to delving into foundational assumptions, such as homoscedasticity and normality, a nonresponse bias analysis was executed. The integrity of the data, in terms of reliability and construct validity, was gauged using confirmatory factor analysis. Subsequent regression outputs corroborated all the proposed assumptions, fortifying the extant scholarly literature.FindingsThe empirical findings of this research underscore a positive correlation between Information system flexibility, dynamic capabilities and a net zero supply chain, especially in the context of environmental dynamism. Data sourced from the cement manufacturing sector support these observations. We also found that environmental dynamism moderates the relationship between data analytics capability and sustainable supply chain flexibility but does not moderate the relationship between Resource flexibility and sustainable supply chain flexibility. Additionally, this research strengthens the foundational principles of the dynamic capability theory.Originality/valueThe conceptual framework elucidates the interplay between information system flexibility, dynamic capabilities, and sustainable supply chain flexibility, emphasizing their collective contribution towards achieving sustainable chain net zero, introducing environmental dynamics as a moderating variable that augments the scholarly discourse with a nuanced layer of analytical depth.

Factors Influencing The Transition Of Transaction Activities From Conventional To Financial Technology

Financial technology as a service innovation in the financial industry has become a means of transaction in the rapidly growing buying and selling transactions. Besides, it has become one of the alternative means of payment for consumers. This opportunity can be used as a business development opportunity for financial services for financial business providers. Changes in the transition from conventional payments to payments using financial technology services are influenced by various factors that support changes in transaction activities. This study aims to determine the factors influencing payment transaction activities, from conventional payments to payments using financial technology services. The research methodology involves various variables involved in it by using the factor analysis approach to determine factors that support the achievement of research objectives. It is supported by a sample of 100 respondents with various representative sample criteria to explain each factor involved in the research. The research results show that the transition of payment transaction activities from conventional methods to payment transactions with financial technology services is influenced by various variables. The variables included are information system flexibility, ideal, and value for use, ability, comfort, safety, interaction, activity, and length of transaction time.

Health Information Systems Adaptation and Flexibility in Extreme Situations: The COVID Effect.

In 2020, a pandemic forced the entire world to adapt to a new scenario. The objective of this study was to know how Health Information Systems were adapted driven by the pandemic of COVID. 12 CIOS of healthcare organizations were interviewed and the interviews were classified according to the dimensions of a sociotechnical model: Infrastructure, Clinical Content, Human Computer Interface, People, Workflow and Communication, Organizational Characteristics and Internal Policies, Regulations, and Measurement and Monitoring. Adaptation to the Pandemic involved social, organizational and cultural rather than merely technical aspects in private organizations with mature and stable Health Information Systems.

Information systems flexibility and robustness of manufacturing firms in Nigeria

This study examined the nexus between Information systems flexibility and Robustness of manufacturing firms in South-South, Nigeria. Nine objectives and hypotheses were postulated to examine the relationship between the dimensions (IT flexibility, Process flexibility and Data flexibility) and the measures (Persistence, Structural stability and Superposition). A structured questionnaire was prepared, while Google forms was used to gather the data from the 210 respondents. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with the aid of Smart PLS 3.3.3, was used to examine the relationship between the dimensions of Information systems flexibility and the measures of Robustness. A total of 185 responses were collected and used for the analysis. The results show that all three dimensions of Information systems flexibility improved Robustness. The study recommends amongst others, that Management of manufacturing firms should adopt flexible information systems through strengthening of networks, relationships with stakeholders and the emphasis on information technology. This will advance the organisations options and provide the firm with various advantages in terms of information access and knowledge sharing needed for their agility within the business environment.

Digital technologies as a modern tool of forensic construction and technical expertise

Digitalisation is embracing more and more activities, including such an integral part of it as judicial proceedings. The effectiveness of judicial proceedings largely depends on forensic activities, the results of which provide evidence in criminal, administrative and civil proceedings. The structure and peculiarities of information support of forensic construction and technical expertise are determined by the goals and objectives of this or that type of expertise. The need for digital transformation of information support is very significant for experts working in any area of forensic expertise, but for construction experts this problem is the most acute. This is due to the very significant scope of forensic activities in this area. The list of issues dealt with by the construction forensic expert is comparable to the scope of those issues dealt with in the construction and operation of construction projects. It is impossible to conduct forensic construction investigations without constant use of scientific, normative-technical and methodological sources both modern and previously published. All these facts determined the necessity of formation and development of the system of information support of this activity which meets the requirements of the present time. The article presents the basic principles, the observance of which ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of this system. The list of the specified principles includes: a principle of necessity of the information, a principle of obligatory knowledge of a degree of reliability of the information, principles of its completeness and a variety, principles of urgency and simplicity, a principle of flexibility of information system, a principle of ordering (distribution) of databases, a principle of minimization of number of search actions, a principle of integration of information system and a principle of protection of the information against unauthorized access. The authors also consider in detail in relation to the problems of forensic construction and technical expertise the principles of information system functioning, which include: the principle of combination of stability of information sources and operative systematic replenishment of new information, the principle of operative information supply, the principle of adequacy of information response to experts' enquiries, the principle of advance of information «supply» of information «demand». The structureand content of funds of primary and secondary sources of information support of forensic construction-technical expert examination is alsopresented, as well as the prospects of development of information support system of this type of forensic activities with the use of digital technologies, based on the fact that the results of its functioning must meet the requirements of modern legal proceedings.

The Trajectory of Two Decades of Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management and Flexibility Research: A Bibliometric Analysis.

In the year 2020, the Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management (GJFSM) has celebrated its two decades of publication. This study is an attempt to commemorate the two decades of publication by presenting the overview of the GJFSM along with the trajectory of flexibility research in various journals. By using multiple bibliometric tools and indicators, the study finds that the GJFSM has grown over the years in terms of total publications and citations. The contributors are from across the globe, i.e., South America, North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. The Journal publishes several flexibility areas, including information systems flexibility, financial flexibility, supply chain flexibility, technology management flexibility, marketing flexibility, organizational flexibility, strategic flexibility, and manufacturing flexibility. The GJFSM is cited by authors from various countries across the globe. It has been cited across different Scopus categorizations, including “Strategy and Management,” “Business and International Management,” “General Business, Management and Accounting,” “Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering,” and “Management Science and Operations Research.” Keyword co-occurrences analysis helps to analyze the various groups of keywords cited together in the GJFSM. Co-citation analysis of references helps to identify crucial clusters of GJFSM, i.e., strategic flexibility, manufacturing flexibility, the conceptual framework of flexibility, supply chain flexibility, modeling flexibility, and application of TISM. Overall, GJFSM has seen an increase in both publications and citations, reflecting its increasing presence among the journals publishing flexibility research. The diversity of flexibility research and its contributions to research under-one-roof make this Journal unique. The paper concludes with the gap areas of flexibility research and the way forward.

The effect of AI quality on customer experience and brand relationship

AbstractAlthough Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been gradually introduced to various industries, research on customer attitudes and behavior toward the use of AI is still in its infancy. Underpinned by flow theory and social identity theory, the current research aims to examine the influence of AI on the customer experience of flow, customer‐brand identification and customer advocacy. In addition, it is suggested that employee responsiveness moderates the effect of AI quality on flow and customer‐brand identification. A paper‐based survey was used to collect data from 350 guests from hotels in Vietnam. The findings indicate that AI information currency and system flexibility are significantly related to flow whereas AI system timeliness is the only dimension that significantly affects customer‐brand identification. Flow and customer‐brand identification significantly mediates the relationship between AI quality and customer advocacy. Besides, as the level of employee responsiveness decreases, the effect of AI system reliability on customer‐brand identification is more significant. This study extends the current body of knowledge in relation to the role of AI in the development of service experience and the relationship between customers and an organization. The findings make a compelling case for hotels to invest in AI tools in order to respond to customer expectations and improve their perception of hotel services.

Customization and Performance of Service-Oriented Manufacturing Information System: The Mediating Effect of Information System Flexibility

The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence for the validity of the relationship between service-oriented manufacturing information system (SMIS) customization and performance from three aspects: data flexibility, process flexibility and system flexibility. We select some questionnaires from the third round of High-performance manufacturing (HPM) data to construct the construct, verify the reliability and validity of the construct, extract principal components, and analyze the mediating effect by using multiple chain linear regression and structural equation model. The results show that SMIS customization has a significant impact on its performance, and this effect works through its flexibility. More specifically, it is the multiple chain mediation effect composed of data flexibility, process flexibility and system flexibility. The importance of SMIS customization and flexibility to the organization is made clear, which helps practitioners understand the internal mechanism that affects SMIS performance, so as to use limited resources to improve system performance.

Ambidextrous supply chain strategy and supply chain flexibility: the contingent effect of ISO 9001

PurposeTo analyze the effect of an ambidextrous supply chain strategy (ASCS) – i.e. the combination of exploration and exploitation practices – on each of the four dimensions of supply chain flexibility (SCF): information system, operating system, sourcing and distribution flexibility. Further, to evaluate the influence of implementing the ISO 9001 standard on the relationship between ASCS and SCF, and whether this certification directly affects the level of SCF. We ground our model in Resource Orchestration theory.Design/methodology/approachTo perform this study, the authors used data collected from a sample of 145 non-ISO-certified firms and 157 ISO-certified firms.FindingsASCS does not affect all four dimensions of SCF in the same way. Rather, its effect is contingent on the presence of the ISO 9001 certification. An ASCS is shown to have a positive effect on information system flexibility irrespective of the presence of ISO 9001 certification whereas for the other three dimensions of SCF, the effect of ASCS is dependent on ISO 9001 implementation. Meanwhile, ISO 9001 implementation itself does not affect the level of SCF.Practical implicationsManagers can use the findings to configure their supply chain strategy based on the specific dimension(s) of SCF they seek to develop by implementing ASCS. Further, the results inform managers about the incentives for implementing ISO 9001.Originality/valueAlthough prior studies have shown that an ambidextrous strategy enables firms and organizational units to adapt to the environment, there have been few prior studies on ambidexterity in a supply chain context. Further, although the extant literature has suggested that the ISO 9001 may facilitate ambidexterity, this link has remained largely theoretical. In fact, there is very little prior evidence on how the practice of ISO 9001 affects the supply chain.

VIRTUAL STRUCTURE FOR SUSTAINABLE WIRELESS NETWORKS IN CLOUD SERVICES AND ENTERPRISE INFORMATION SYSTEM

The wireless network virtualization for the cloud and the enterprise information system would enable maximum utilization of resources, causing an enhancement in the enterprise information system efficiency, by sharing the infrastructure among multiple applications or service provisioning’s. The physical wireless structure of the network and the radio resources are split and shared among different applications by abstraction and isolation to provide a cost effective and efficient handling of the enormous amount of the services. Further the virtualization also provides a migration to the latest products and the technologies at ease. In spite of all these potentials there are several challenges that are to be handled before embedding the virtual wireless network over the physical infrastructure. The paper focuses on developing a virtual wireless network that are sustainable(VSWN) for the cloud and enterprise information system involving the software defined networks that includes network function virtualizing and deep packet inspection for improving the agility and the flexibility of the Cloud enterprise information system. The further validation of the proposed model using the network simulator shows throughput enhancements with cost efficiency when compared to the other wireless network management of cloud.

Leveraging Smart Supply Chain and Information System Agility for Supply Chain Flexibility

Global businesses are leveraging their analytical capabilities to develop competence over others. This study uses Organization Information Processing Theory (OIPT) in context to explain the relationship between the smart supply chain and information system flexibility to achieve an overall greater supply chain flexibility. Also, this shows that correct deployment of information processing leads to better diffusion of information throughout the system necessary for making the supply chain more adaptive in nature. This study extends the application of OIPT theory and a better understanding of analytical data processing and theoretically grounded guidance to managers in order to achieve a higher degree of flexibility in dynamic conditions. The Partial Least Square Method based on Structural Equation Modeling is used to empirically test the theoretical framework. Results from the analysis of 150 respondents indicate the strong relationship between the components of the smart supply chain and information systems agility. The research shows a positive relationship between the characteristics of smart supply chain management and modules of information system flexibility which leads to the achievement of a high level of supply chain flexibility.

UK national audit of safety checks for radiology interventions.

To reaudit the use of safety checklists in radiology departments in NHS departments throughout the UK. This audit was performed on behalf of The Royal College of Radiologists Audit Committee in 2016 and was sent to radiology audit leads at every NHS department in the UK to determine the use of safety checks in various modalities and subspecialties. Free-form text boxes gathered data on problems with checklist implementation. 109/177 (62%) trusts responded. 48% of respondents used safety checklists for all radiological procedures in all modalities. 50% used checklists for some procedures. 2% did not use a checklist. Checklist use had increased since the previous audit (98% 2016, compared to 94% in 2012) but implementation for different procedures remains variable. For example, in ultrasound-guided fine needle and breast stereotactic procedures (49%), use has not increased since 2012. Reasons for not using checklists include a perception that intervention suite checklists were not appropriate for minor procedures and the limited flexibility of radiology information systems. The limitations of checklists are discussed. Our reaudit shows that in spite of increased implementation, use of safety checks is variable. Local ownership and radiology information system flexibility are needed to support the culture of safety processes in radiology departments.

Services Modeling based on SOA and BPM for Information System Flexibility Improvement

It explores modeling services to synergize SOA and BPM.Several previous studies generally use a business driven approach, technical partially driven to develop the service modeling. This leads to the question of how a service should be modeled so that it can be applied in different contexts and business processes also. It is support user needs in diversity and heterogeneous system environments. This Conditions occurs in corporate university. The case studies in this research is a Learning Management System (LMS) in Academic Enterprise System (EAS). The research stages are: (1) Analysis of Synergy in SOA and BPM, (2) Analysis of User Experience in LMS Academic Enterprise System (L-EAS), <br /> (3) Analysis of Modeling Framework, (4) Proposed Framework that aligning SOA and BPM. The result of this study is proposed system framework based on services to increase the flexibility of information systems at LMS Academic Enterprise System (L-EAS).

Managing strategic performance in a dynamic business environment: A study of two Indian oil companies

In a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous work environment, organizations must adopt an effective strategic performance measurement (SPM) system that ensures their ability to be as flexible as circumstances require. A case study of two Indian oil companies—Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. and Oil India Ltd.—uses the situation actor process‐learning action performance framework to investigate the interaction among seven factors—strategic planning, strategic flexibility, strategy implementation, SPM system design, information system flexibility, SPM management issues, and performance feedback and learning—on the companies’ performance. The results lead to the formation of a dynamic model that managers can use to ensure that their organization's strategy is being translated into attainable goals and to drive enterprise‐wide performance improvement.

Strategic performance management system in uncertain business environment

PurposeBusiness performance management describes the processes, methodologies, metrics and systems needed to measure and manage the performance of an enterprise. Traditional performance management systems were based on financial and productivity measures but the alternate measures proposed in last more 25 years have strategic focus and incorporate variety of performance measures such as efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction, innovation and employee satisfaction in addition to financial. Globalization and modernization have created a business environment uncertain with associated risks which has necessitated the incorporation of various types of flexibilities such as strategic, technical, operational, information system (IS), etc. Critical success factors and implementation issues also need to be incorporated to succeed. The purpose of this paper is to present the strategic performance management system (SPMS) designed, incorporating flexibility and implementation issues, and its effectiveness empirically validated from Indian oil industry.Design/methodology/approachBased on literature review and gaps identified, a proposed model of enterprise performance management system incorporating flexibility, critical success factors and implementation issues was developed. Macro- and micro-level factors impacting the effectiveness of the model were identified, and hypotheses were developed and tested empirically from the survey study of Indian oil industry.FindingsThe finding met, by and large, most of the research objectives. In total, 7 macro- and 11 micro-level factors came out from the study. The strategy planning, strategy implementation, strategic flexibility (SF), SPMS design, information system flexibility (IF) flexibility, implementation issues and critical success factors, and performance feedback and learning are the macro-level factors impacting the SPMS effectiveness in measuring and managing performance of an enterprise. The SPMS implementation issues have proved to be major driver of effectiveness.Research limitations/implicationsThe research like many such researches had limited resources, data availability and bias of respondents. However, the model was statistically validated for its reliability and hypothesis testing. The research has added to literature on SPMS as integrated model incorporated SF, information flexibility and critical success factors. However, the effect of other types of flexibilities such as organizational, operational, HR, marketing, etc., and other stakeholders should also be studied in future research to broaden the findings.Practical implicationsThe validated SPMS has practical implications for academics and researchers. Strategic and IF, and critical success factors have been incorporated in the integrated model to take care of business uncertainties so that it is strategically aligned and facilitate in effective SPMS use and implementation.Social implicationsThough it has no direct social implication but, if adopted for social projects and not-for-profit organizations, it will have social benefits of efficient and effectiveness delivery of social projects and initiatives.Originality/valueThis is an original work carried out by the authors. The validated model along with interpretation is presented.

Drivers of management accounting adaptability: the agility lens

PurposeManagement accounting practices are expected to adapt and evolve with changing information requirements. The purpose of this study is to determine factors that drive management accounting adaptability (MAA) in organisations using the agility lens.Design/methodology/approachThis study identifies three factors that drive MAA through their support of agility. Specifically, the impact of top management team knowledge, team-based structures and information system flexibility on MAA is examined. The hypotheses are tested using data collected from an online survey of Australian and New Zealand companies.FindingsThe results support the proposed relations and explain a significant variance in MAA. Also, consistent with previous findings, a positive association between MAA and management accounting effectiveness was found.Research limitations/implicationsThis study illustrates the value of using the agility lens in the context of management accounting change, which is under-explored in the accounting literature relative to other disciplines such as production economics.Practical implicationsThis study recommends management to refrain from behaviour that encourages and maintains the status quo. Influencing the factors identified in this study can encourage more innovation in management accounting and improve adaptability when changes to organisational contingencies occur.Originality/valueThis paper explores and adopts the concept of agility to complement dominant theories in the management accounting change literature. The concept of agility is unpacked and applied to review existing literature to explain how management accounting may become more adaptable and open to evolving. The resulting model identifies factors that support sense-making and responding as constituents of agility. This study also extends a recent study by Yigitbasioglu (2016) on the link between information technology and MAA by building a more powerful model in terms of scope and explanatory power to explain the ability of management accounting to change over time.

Firms’ information system characteristics and management accounting adaptability

Purpose– This study aims to explore the relation between the qualities of the information system (IS), management accounting adaptability (MAA) and its effectiveness.Design/methodology/approach– This study involves the development and empirical testing of a model where the qualities of the IS and management accounting effectiveness (MAE) are mediated by MAA.Findings– Information system flexibility (ISF) and shared knowledge had a significant and positive relation to MAA, which in turn had a positive and significant relation to MAE. There was also a moderation effect of ISF on the relation between IS integration and MAA.Research limitations/implications– IS integration in itself may not lead to management accounting stability, but it is the lack of flexibility of the system and lack of cooperation between the stakeholders that might lead to its stagnation.Practical implications– Organizations are advised to implement solutions that are relatively flexible and modular, as well as encourage cooperation between stakeholders to fully leverage and improve the existing system.Originality/value– The study extends the discourse on the interaction between management accounting and ISs by exploring the role of a number of factors that drive MAA.

Supply chain flexibility assessment and decision-making: a fuzzy intelligent approach

Supply chain flexibility is considered as a major determinant of competitiveness in the global business market today. Flexibility is the organisation's ability to satisfy an increasing variety of customer expectations without excessive cost, time, organisational disruptions, or performance losses. Effective control of supply chain flexibility can improve overall organisational performance. The present study thus builds a group decision-making structural hierarchy model towards assessment as well as benchmarking of flexibility extent in supply chain management. This study presents a framework for evaluating supply chain flexibility through comprehensive analysis of past literature and identifies five elements (assessment indices) for characterising supply chain flexibility viz. supply network flexibility, operations systems flexibility, logistics process flexibility, information system flexibility, and organisational design flexibility. The subjectivity of the flexibility indices have been tackled through exploration of the concept of fuzzy logic; thus, enabling decision-making which involves linguistic expert judgment.

Use of introspective interfaces in application layer protocols

Technologies and architectures of applied software systems have significant achievements in the field of creating monolithic and new solutions, which are expressed in well designed and thought out software development methodologies, programming paradigms, platforms and libraries, but the task of integrating disparate information systems (IS) is still poorly elaborated. Movement towards uniform and centralized solutions cannot fully eliminate the integration problem until all the software in the world will become an integral software package with a common architecture, cross-cutting standards and continuous synchronous update process. Under the conditions of heterogeneous distributed IS, the relevance of integration tasks increases. Summarizing the theoretical and practical experience of binding application web-service type IS, the authors propose an approach to solving the problem of dynamic binding of application programming interfaces (API) in distributed information systems, using the methods of metaprogramming and its various techniques, such as introspection, dynamic modification of the structure and functions of the software modules, use of metadata and dynamic interpretation of metamodels. At interaction of two or more systems through network interfaces with introspection and interpretation of the metamodel, there is dynamical binding of their interfaces, allowing to modify the functionality of applied information systems without specialized adaptation of calls and change in the code, and also to bind the systems, interaction of which was not originally intended. This method increases the IS flexibility and allows significantly improve the code reuse and IS development and operating efficiency in general.
