Improving metrology with quantum scrambling in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a cavity

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is an ideal candidate for implementing the many-body entanglement, quantum measurement and quantum information processing owing to its inherent spin-mixing dynamics. Here we present a system of an 87Rb atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical ring cavity, in which cavity-mediated nonlinear interactions give rise to saddle points in the semiclassical phase space, providing a general mechanism for exponential fast scrambling and metrological gain augment. We theoretically study metrological gain and fidelity out-of-time-ordered correlator based on time-reversal protocols and demonstrate that exponential rapid scrambling dynamics can enhance quantum metrology. In addition, we use the out-of-time-ordered correlator to probe dynamical phase transitions. This work is useful to understand the intrinsic relation between the concepts from different subfields of quantum science.

Association of domain-general speed of information processing with spoken language outcomes in prelingually-deaf children with cochlear implants

Spoken language development after pediatric cochlear implantation requires rapid and efficient processing of novel, degraded auditory signals and linguistic information. These demands for rapid adaptation tax the information processing speed ability of children who receive cochlear implants. This study investigated the association of speed of information processing ability with spoken language outcomes after cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf children aged 4–6 years. Two domain-general (visual, non-linguistic) speed of information processing measures were administered to 21 preschool-aged children with cochlear implants and 23 normal-hearing peers. Measures of speech recognition, language (vocabulary and comprehension), nonverbal intelligence, and executive functioning skills were also obtained from each participant. Speed of information processing was positively associated with speech recognition and language skills in preschool-aged children with cochlear implants but not in normal-hearing peers. This association remained significant after controlling for hearing group, age, nonverbal intelligence, and executive functioning skills. These findings are consistent with models suggesting that domain-general, fast-efficient information processing speed underlies adaptation to speech perception and language learning following implantation. Assessment and intervention strategies targeting speed of information processing may provide better understanding and development of speech-language skills after cochlear implantation.

Coherent control of an optical tweezer phonon laser

The creation and manipulation of coherence continues to capture the attention of scientists and engineers. The optical laser is a canonical example of a system that, in principle, exhibits complete coherence. Recent research has focused on the creation of coherent, laser-like states in other physical systems. The phonon laser is one example where it is possible to amplify self-sustained mechanical oscillations. A single mode phonon laser in a levitated optical tweezer has been demonstrated through appropriate balance of active feedback gain and damping. In this work, coherent control of the dynamics of an optical tweezer phonon laser is used to share coherence between its different modes of oscillation, creating a multimode phonon laser. The coupling of the modes is achieved by periodically rotating the asymmetric optical potential in the transverse focal plane of the trapping beam via trap laser polarization rotation. The presented theory and experiment demonstrate that coherence can be transferred across different modes of an optical tweezer phonon laser, and are a step toward using these systems for precision measurement and quantum information processing.

TEMPERATURE ERROR OF THE MEANS OF MEASURING THE GEOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF BORES OF FIREARMS: MATHEMATICAL MODEL AND QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION

The work is devoted to the construction of mathematical models and quantitative assessment of the components of the temperature error of a laser triangulation sensor for measuring the geometric characteristics of bores of firearms.
 The existence of problematic issues in the field of evaluating the metrological characteristics of laser triangulation means for technical diagnostics of firearms barrel channels is highlighted. An analysis of publications
 on the evaluation of the error of a laser triangulation sensor caused by the influence of ambient temperature is carried out, and known approaches to their mathematical modeling are considered. The need to develop mathematical models of the components of the temperature error of a laser triangulation sensor and to quantify this error is substantiated.
 The parameters of the optical scheme of the laser triangulation sensor, whose deviation from their nominal (calculated) values will affect the conversion function, are determined. It is shown that the presence of a temperature error during the processing of measurement information will be perceived as an apparent change in the measured value with a constant input signal.
 On the basis of algebraic transformations of expressions reflecting the relationship between the output value of a laser triangulation sensor and deviations of the optical circuit parameters from their nominal values, mathematical models of the temperature error components are obtained and presented in the form of error component limits at the input of the measuring instrument. The expressions for determining the confidence limits of the total temperature error, taking into account the correlation between its components, are substantiated.
 A quantitative assessment of the temperature error for the characteristic combinations of weapon parameters (for four ranges of barrel calibers) in the range of ambient temperature variations inherent in the region where measurements are made is carried out. The results of the quantitative evaluation are presented in the form of graphs of the dependence of the limits of relative and absolute temperature errors on temperature and on the increase in the bore radius in the measurement range. The data obtained were analyzed, the peculiarities of the dependencies were determined, and conclusions were drawn about the compliance of the temperature error characteristics of the measuring instrument with the requirements for its accuracy.

Synthesis of a measurement procedure for estimating the orientation of a small unmanned aerial vehicle under conditions of changing status of measurement results

The problem of processing measurement information with changing status of measurement results of micromechanical sensors of an intelligent on-board measuring system of a small unmanned aerial vehicle is considered. While vehicle is in the air, the measurement results status changes from confirmed to orienting, for example, due to sensor defects, degradation of the measuring channel, the appearance of false measurement output signals of micromechanical sensors due to vibrations and shocks caused by the movement of air masses. As a result, the probability of stability loss of a small unmanned aerial vehicle increases and it is necessary to raise the accuracy of estimating its orientation in conditions of changing status of measurement results. The measuring procedure of the Kalman structure is considered, the equations of which are determined with accuracy to the parameters of the transition and noise matrices of the state, as well as the perturbation vector, characterizing the measuring process. The parameter values are determined by a mathematical model for converting measuring information based on a dynamic mathematical model, which distinguishes the developed measuring procedure from a measuring procedure with a classical transition matrix. A neural network is used to find unknown parameters. A multilayer perceptron was selected as the basis of a neural network, for which an error back propagation algorithm is used to train. Based on the results of mathematical modeling and measurement experiment, it was found that the accuracy of the synthesized measuring procedure based on a dynamic mathematical model is higher than the accuracy of the measuring procedure of the Kalman structure with a classical transition matrix. The results of the study will be useful in the development of intelligent measurement procedures for on-board measurement systems operating under conditions of changing status of measurement results

The parameters of the optical scheme of a laser triangulation sensor, whose deviation from their nominal (calculated) values will affect the transformation function, are determined. It is shown that the presence of a technological error during the processing of measurement information will be perceived as an apparent change in the measured value with a constant input signal. Mathematical models of the components of technological error are obtained, which are presented in the form of error limits at the input of the measuring instrument. The expressions for determining the confidence limits of the total technological error, taking into account the correlation between its components, are substantiated. A quantitative assessment of the technological error for characteristic combinations of weapon parameters is carried out. The results of the quantitative evaluation are presented in the form of graphs of the dependence of the limits of relative and absolute technological error on the increase in the radius of the bore in the measurement range.

Research on intensity–difference squeezing enhancement of phase-sensitive amplifier based on coherent feedback

The intensity-difference squeezed state is an important concept in quantum optics, which is not only of great significance for fundamental research in quantum physics, but also an important quantum resource in the fields of quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum precision measurement. The optical parametric amplifier based on atomic four-wave mixing is one of the most effective means to achieve intensity-difference squeezed light. However, due to the absorption loss of atomic vapor in the light field, the output squeezing still needs improving. By feeding the non-classical optical field from the optical parametric amplifier back to the input port, the quantum characteristics of its output optical field can be enhanced. However, the intensity-difference squeezing enhancement from a phase-insensitive amplifier is experimentally realized based on coherent feedback control. The intensity-difference squeezing enhancement of the phase-sensitive amplifier has not been discussed. In this work, a two-port coherent feedback-controlled phase-sensitive amplifier is analyzed theoretically. The dependence of the intensity-difference squeezing, respectively, on the feedback intensity, the intensity gain of the optical parametric amplifier, and the losses of the system are investigated. For the ideal case in which the losses of the system are ignored, infinite squeezing can be achieved by adjusting the strength and phase of feedback. Considering the actual atomic absorption losses, squeezing enhancement can also be achieved over a wide range of intensity gains within a certain feedback intensity range. In addition, the squeezing enhancement is quite efficient for the medium intensity gain range. The intensity-difference squeezing enhancement strongly depends on the absorption loss of atomic vapor. The smaller the absorption loss, the more significant the squeezing enhancement effect is. Furthermore, the experimental feasibility of this scheme is also considered in detail. Our research can provide useful references for achieving high-quality non classical light fields in experiment, which may find applications in quantum information processing and quantum precise measurement.

Characterization of magnetic field for loading, trapping and transferring cold atom close to the atom chip’s surface

Atom chips provide flexible technologies for implementing modern concepts in quantum optics, quantum measurement, and quantum information processing. Atom chips are miniature devices that confine, control and manipulate cold atoms using electric, magnetic, and light fields. Due to the shrinkage of scale, arbitrary magnetic traps can be generated from current sources outside the chip’s vacuum compartment, in contrast to a traditional setup. This makes it easy to change trap configurations in an experiment that involves rapid prototyping of quantum states and quantum trajectory designs in free space. In this work, we show relevant parameters needed for transferring a cold atom cloud at the recoil limit from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) to an area close to the atom chip. To create a movable magnetic potential for this transfer, we used the MOT coils and an additional pair of coils in an anti-Helmholtz configuration. The properties of the movable potential were obtained by performing the Computer Simulation Tool (CST EM Studio suite®). Furthermore, an appropriate magnetic trap on a chip is developed, based on the simulation from COMSOL Multiphysics. We used a magnetic field gradient of around 20 G/cm to transport the cold atom with a distance over 20 mm with a temperature gain below 100 micro-Kelvin. The simulation results are based on an atom chip with a size of 2×2 cm2 and a copper wire thickness of 2 mm. The atom chip consists of Z, U and I-shaped wires that generate a quadrupole magnetic field. The resulting field minimum can be made at least 7 mm away from the chip surface.

Cannabidiol versus placebo as adjunctive treatment in early psychosis: study protocol for randomized controlled trial

BackgroundPsychotic disorders are a leading cause of disability in young adults. Antipsychotics have been the primary intervention for psychosis for over 60 years, and yet, we have made little progress in treating negative symptoms, neurocognition, and functional disability. There is growing evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) is effective in treating positive psychotic symptoms, possibly also negative and neurocognitive symptoms, and moreover is well tolerated compared to other psychotropic medications. Anecdotally, patients participating in the Cognitive Assessment and Risk Evaluation (CARE) Early Psychosis Treatment Program at the University of California, San Diego, are self-administering CBD and report subjective improvement in stress, anxiety, and ability to cope with symptoms. The overarching aim of the trial is to explore the effectiveness of CBD augmentation on symptoms and neurocognition in early psychosis while also exploring the mechanism of action of CBD and predictors of response to treatment. The mechanism by which cannabidiol has a therapeutic effect on psychosis is poorly understood. Recent evidence has suggested that CBD may reduce stress and pro-inflammatory biomarker levels. Endocannabinoids also have powerful roles in eating behavior, reward, and mood, indicating these neurotransmitters may play a role in reducing hyperphagia and metabolic abnormalities that are present early in the course of psychotic illness and exacerbated by antipsychotic medication. The neurophysiological effects of CBD have been studied in animal models of psychosis that show improvements in information processing in response to CBD, but there are no studies in individuals with early psychosis.MethodA total of 120 individuals in the early stages of psychosis will be randomized to 1000 mg of CBD versus placebo as an adjunct to existing treatment in a 8-week, double-blind superiority randomized control trial. The primary outcome measures are symptoms and neurocognition.DiscussionWe hypothesized that CBD will improve symptoms and neurocognition as well as secondary outcome measures of neurohormones, inflammation, eating behaviors, and information processing. Importantly, predictors, moderators, and mediators of the CBD effects will be examined. A better understanding of which individuals are likely to respond to CBD can inform treatment planning and personalize treatment.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT04411225. Evaluating the association between steroid hormones and filtering of sensory information in healthy women

Sensori (motor) gating is an integral part of information processing. Stress may affect information processing and is a potent risk factor for the onset and worsening of mental disorders. Sensori (motor) gating is affected by sex hormone rhythms, e.g. changes over the menstrual cycle. Here, we investigated if steroid hormones, i.e. cortisol and ovarian sex hormones, influence sensori (motor) gating. Data from 53 naturally cycling healthy women were analyzed in a cross-sectional design. Associations between prepulse inhibition (PPI) and P50 suppression variables and endogenous estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, total daily cortisol, and the cortisol awakening response were evaluated using multiple linear regression and Spearman's correlation. Total daily cortisol was negatively associated with PPI. Estradiol was positively associated with the acoustic startle response in the PPI paradigm and the P50 amplitude to the conditioning stimulus in the P50 paradigm. Steroid hormone levels were not associated with P50 suppression. In conclusion, estrogen and cortisol levels in healthy, naturally cycling women are associated with key brain measures of basic information processing. This finding may stimulate further studies into the role of stress hormones and estrogen transitions in modulating information filtering, which may be critical for risk and resilience to mental disorders.

Differential neurocognitive profiles in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder subtypes revealed by the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery.

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (aADHD) represents a heterogeneous entity incorporating different subgroups in terms of symptomatology, course, and neurocognition. Although neurocognitive dysfunction is generally associated with aADHD, its severity, association with self-reported symptoms, and differences between subtypes remain unclear. We investigated 61 outpatients (65.6% male, mean age 31.5 ± 9.5) diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria together with age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) (n = 58, 63.8% male, mean age 32.3 ± 9.6). Neurocognitive alterations were assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and compared between groups using the generalized linear model (GLM) method. Multivariate effects were tested by principal component analysis combined with multivariate pattern analysis. Self-reported symptom severity was tested for correlations with neurocognitive performance. GLM analyses revealed nominally significant differences between the aADHD and HC groups in several domains, however, only the Rapid Visual Information Processing measures survived correction, indicating impaired sustained attention and response inhibition in the aADHD group. Comparison of the predominantly inattentive and the hyperactive-impulsive/combined subtypes yielded nominally significant differences with higher levels of dysfunction in the inattentive group. In the stepwise discriminant analysis aADHD and HC groups were best separated with 2 factors representing sustained attention and reaction time. We found only weak correlations between symptom severity and CANTAB factors. aADHD patients are neuropsychologically heterogeneous and subtypes show different neurocognitive profiles. Differences between the aADHD and HC groups were driven primarily by the inattentive subtype. Sustained attention and its factor derivative showed the most significant alterations in aADHD patients.

49 Adaptive Functioning in a Mixed Clinical Sample of Older Adults: The Importance of Processing Speed

Objective:The presence of cognitive impairment corresponds with declines in adaptive functioning (Cahn-Weiner, Ready, & Malloy, 2003). Although memory loss is often highlighted as a key deficit in neurodegenerative diseases (Arvanitakis et al., 2018), research indicates that processing speed may be equally important when predicting functional outcomes in atypical cognitive decline (Roye et al., 2022). Additionally, the development of performance-based measures of adaptive functioning offers a quantifiable depiction of functional deficits within a clinical setting. This study investigated the degree to which processing speed explains the relationship between immediate/delayed memory and adaptive functioning in patients diagnosed with mild and major neurocognitive disorders using an objective measure of adaptive functioning.Participants and Methods:Participants (N = 115) were selected from a clinical database of neuropsychological evaluations. Included participants were ages 65+ (M = 74.7, SD = 5.15), completed all relevant study measures, and were diagnosed with Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (NCD; N = 69) or Major NCD (N = 46). They were majority white (87.8%) women (53.0%). The Texas Functional Living Scale was used as a performance-based measure of adaptive functioning. The Coding subtest from the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS-CD) was used to measure information processing speed. Composite memory measures for Immediate Recall and Delayed Recall were created from subtests of the RBANS (List Learning, Story Memory, and Figure Recall) and the Wechsler Memory Scale-IV (Logical Memory and Visual Reproduction). Multiple regressions were conducted to evaluate the importance of memory and information processing speed in understanding adaptive functioning. Age and years of education were added as covariates in regression analyses.Results:Significant correlations (p < .001) were found between adaptive functioning and processing speed (PS; r = .52), immediate memory (IM; r = .43), and delayed memory (DM; r = .32). In a regression model with IM and DM predicting daily functioning, only IM significantly explained daily functioning (rsp = .24, p = .009). A multiple regression revealed daily functioning was significantly and uniquely associated with IM (rsp = .28, p < .001) and PS (rsp = .41, p < .001). This was qualified by a significant interaction effect (rsp = -.29, p = .001), revealing that IM was only associated with adaptive functioning at PS scores lower than the RBANS normative 20th percentile.Conclusions:Results suggest that processing speed may be a more sensitive predictor of functional decline than memory among older adults with cognitive disorders. These findings support further investigation into the clinical utility of processing speed tests for predicting functional decline in older adults.

Discrete-time stochastic systems with multiplicative and additive noises describe a wide class of mathematical models of complex systems, for example, industrial-technological, energy, economic, telecommunication, aerospace systems, etc. An important class of algorithms for processing measure ment information in complex systems are Kalman-type discrete-time filtering algorithms. Purpose. Construction of new discrete-time filtering algorithms for discrete-time linear systems with multiplicative and additive noises based on numerically stable modified weighted Gram – Schmidt orthogonalization (MWGS). Methodology. The methods of computational linear algebra were used, namely, the direct procedu re of MWGS-orthogonalization, the theory of Kalman filtering, methods of scientific programming in MATLAB. Findings. New LD-algorithms for discrete-time filtering in covariance and informational form for discrete-time stochastic systems with multiplicative and additive noises are constructed. The algorithms have an extended array form allowing updates for all necessary filter values. The method employs numerically stable modified weighted Gram – Schmidt orthogonalization. Algebraic equiva lence of LD-filters to Kalman-type covariance and informational algorithms for linear discrete time stochastic systems with multiplicative and additive noises is proved. The conducted numerical experiments have shown the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms using the example of solving the problem of parametric estimation of a model of almost rectilinear motion, as well as their savings in computation time compared to previously constructed UD filters. Value. New discrete-time filtering LD-algorithms can be used as a reliable computational alterna tive to the Kalman-type “standard algorithms” since they have the property being numerically stable to machine round-off errors due to the use of the MWGS orthogonalization computational procedure at each iteration of the algorithm. The results can be used to solve problems of measurement information processing in discrete-time systems with multiplicative and additive noise.

Bragg grating based entangled biphoton dispersion management

In the realm of quantum information processing and precision measurements, a range of non-classical effects based on entangled photon pairs are employed. Non-local dispersion cancellation is one of these properties, in which the second photon (idler) can be manipulated to cancel the effects of dispersion on the first photon (signal). In the present study, a thorough investigation is conducted into non-local dispersion cancellation by using excitation modes within a Bragg grating slab waveguide. We present a complete theoretical analysis of non-local dispersion cancellation for frequency-limited entangled photon pairs. For the analysis of the effect of dispersion cancellation, we use a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) photon pair source with frequency correlation and anti-correlation as the entangled source. To evaluate the dispersion cancellation effect for information processing applications, the second correlation function is used and calculated as a practical and tangible metric. Considering different cases for Bragg Grating waveguide the results on both photons are extracted and discussed. Moreover, we will show that the physical parameters of the waveguide that the second photon is propagated inside will be effective in minimizing the width of the temporal correlation function. Hence, this study underscores the feasibility of achieving non-local dispersion cancellation through strategic optimization of optical and geometric parameters in the Bragg Grating waveguide, with potential implications for quantum information processing and high-resolution sensing endeavors.

SOME ISSUES OF NONLINEAR FILTERING FOR AIRCRAFT CONTROL SYSTEMS

Increasing the maneuverability of guided main parts of long-range ballistic missiles (RBDD HF) or o ther aircraft, in particular unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the introduction of additional degrees of independence at the same time significantly complicates the dynamics of the system, and therefore the object control system itself, in particular its subsystem processing of measurement information.
 At the same time, an analysis of the performance of: extended Kalman filter, sigma point and cubature Kalman filter in the circuit of the aircraft control system is given. For example, the Kalman quadrature filter algorithm is virtually impossible to effectively use for systems whose dimension exceeds the order of 5 due to the exponential increase in calculation time.
 Therefore, three algorithms are considered: EKF, UKF and CKF. Using the example of the controlled dynamics of the aircraft, regardless of the direction of movement, it is necessary to orient the body. The performance of filtering algorithms and the justified selection of a filter for the evaluation of this type of system are considered.
 To determine the trajectory of the aircraft, the presented model is numerically integrated, while the control parameters , , are some functions of the current state of the target trajectory.
 The measurement is simulated by adding Gaussian "white" noise, the parameters of which are selected to match the parameters of existing devices, to the results of the integration of the equations of motion.
 In general, the article is aimed at simplifying the hardware implementation of the entire aircraft control system to counter emerging additional degrees of independence, which complicate the dynamics of the system while increasing the accuracy of the aircraft hitting the target, while it is considered that the method of determining the control parameters is a known value.

Quantum properties of nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond coupled to mechanical resonators

The optical absorption spectrum of the hybrid system composed of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center coupled to the mechanical resonators is. investigated. Based on the pump-probe technology, the electronically induced transparency (EIT) is observed and the reasonable explanation for this transparency is given. We demonstrate that the position of the transparency is equal to the detuning difference. In addition, a completely new scheme to measure the coupling between the NV center and current carrying carbon nanotube mechanical resonator is obtained. Furthermore, an optical approach to measure the frequency of the vibrating graphene mechanical resonator is proposed. This work can provide some help for the application in the field of high-precision measurement and quantum information processing.

THE ROLE OF METROLOGICAL SUPPORT IN INNOVATIVE ACTIVITIES

The transition to new technologies sets a number of new specific tasks determined by the parameters and structure of innovative products to science and technology. Both the technological process of creating innovative products and the measurement of parameters, processing of measurement information, and ensuring the credibility and metrological reliability of measurements need metrological support. The functioning of modern measuring instruments is connected not only with the possibility of a purposeful choice of a rational measurement algorithm in a fixed situation but also with the procedure for making decisions about the nature of further actions. Therefore, fundamental research concerning the design of intelligent measuring instruments is currently being actively conducted in mathematical metrology. The development of an electronic information and analytical system for measuring equipment will ensure the installation of the optimal range of quantitative target indicators and the formation of metrological measures of priority programs and projects. The article considers the possibilities of successfully solving the problems of metrological support for the implementation of innovative technologies. The solution of such problems depends on the completeness, validity, and feasibility of metrological measures. The expediency and necessity of the formation and implementation of metrological measures of innovative technologies are shown. ANALYSIS OF THE FEATURES OF PROCESSING ALGORITHMS OF EXTERNAL TRAJECTOR INFORMATION RECEIVED OF THE MFTR-2100/40 RADAR SYSTEM

The peculiarities of processing measurement information received by the MFTR-2100/40 radar system as part of a mobile polygon measuring and computing complex are considered. After processing, the results of external trajectory measurements obtained using the radar channel are used to determine the parameters of samples of weapons and military equipment.
 The factors that worsen the process of measurement by the radar system are analyzed. Analyzed processing parameters in the WinTrack software, which can be interpreted ambiguously by the operator and lead to false results. Recommendations are provided for the use of the MFTR-2100/40 radar system, taking into account meteorological phenomena.
 The presented results will provide an opportunity for more qualitative and effective testing and certification of weapons and military equipment offered for supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Effects of total sleep deprivation on sensorimotor gating in humans

Sensorimotor gating is a measure of pre-attentional information processing and can be measured by prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex. Sleep deprivation has been shown to disrupt PPI in animals and humans, and has been proposed as an early phase 2 model to probe antipsychotic efficacy in heathy humans. To further investigate the reliability and efficacy of sleep deprivation to produce PPI deficits we tested the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on PPI in healthy controls in a highly controlled sleep laboratory environment. Participants spent 4 days and nights in a controlled laboratory environment with their sleep monitored with polysomnography. Participants were randomly assigned to either normal sleep on all 4 nights (N = 17) or 36 h of TSD on the 3rd or 4th night (N = 40). Participants were assessed for sleepiness using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and underwent a daily PPI task (interstimlulus intervals 30–2000 ms) in the evening. Both within-subject effects (TSD vs. normal sleep in TSD group alone) and between-subject effects (TSD vs. no TSD group) of TSD on PPI were assessed. TSD increased subjective sleepiness measured with the KSS, but did not significantly alter overall startle, habituation or PPI. Sleep measures including duration, rapid eye movement and slow wave sleep duration were also not associated with PPI performance. The current results show that human sensorimotor gating may not be reliably sensitive to sleep deprivation. Further research is required for TSD to be considered a dependable model of PPI disruption for drug discovery in humans.
