Information Transmission through Biotic-Abiotic Interfaces to Restore or Enhance Human Function.

Advancements in reliable information transfer across biotic-abiotic interfaces have enabled the restoration of lost human function. For example, communication between neuronal cells and electrical devices restores the ability to walk to a tetraplegic patient and vision to patients blinded by retinal disease. These impactful medical achievements are aided by tailored biotic-abiotic interfaces that maximize information transfer fidelity by considering the physical properties of the underlying biological and synthetic components. This Review develops a modular framework to define and describe the engineering of biotic and abiotic components as well as the design of interfaces to facilitate biotic-abiotic information transfer using light or electricity. Delineating the properties of the biotic, interface, and abiotic components that enable communication can serve as a guide for future research in this highly interdisciplinary field. Application of synthetic biology to engineer light-sensitive proteins has facilitated the control of neural signaling and the restoration of rudimentary vision after retinal blindness. Electrophysiological methodologies that use brain-computer interfaces and stimulating implants to bypass spinal column injuries have led to the rehabilitation of limb movement and walking ability. Cellular interfacing methodologies and on-chip learning capability have been made possible by organic transistors that mimic the information processing capacity of neurons. The collaboration of molecular biologists, material scientists, and electrical engineers in the emerging field of biotic-abiotic interfacing will lead to the development of prosthetics capable of responding to thought and experiencing touch sensation via direct integration into the human nervous system. Further interdisciplinary research will improve electrical and optical interfacing technologies for the restoration of vision, offering greater visual acuity and potentially color vision in the near future.

Information processing style and institutional trust as factors of COVID vaccine hesitancy

This study investigates the factors contributing to COVID vaccine hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy has commonly been attributed to susceptibility to misinformation and linked to particular socio-demographic factors and personality traits. We present a new perspective, emphasizing the interplay between individual cognitive styles and perceptions of public health institutions. In January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic, 318 participants underwent a comprehensive assessment, including self-report measures of personality and clinical characteristics, as well as a behavioral task that assessed information processing styles. During 2021, attitudes towards vaccines, scientists, and the CDC were measured at three time points (February–October). Panel data analysis and structural equation modeling revealed nuanced relationships between these measures and information processing styles over time. Trust in public health institutions, authoritarian submission, and lower information processing capabilities together contribute to vaccine acceptance. Information processing capacities influenced vaccination decisions independently from the trust level, but their impact was partially mediated by authoritarian tendencies. These findings underscore the multifactorial nature of vaccine hesitancy, which emerges as a product of interactions between individual cognitive styles and perceptions of public health institutions. This novel perspective provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive this complex phenomenon.

Modelling of Timestamp Processing within Transport Network Equipment

The modern telecommunication networks are forming on the basis of different transmission and data processing technologies. High load on the transport layer nodes demands quality synchronization of equipment that works on it. The transport network is an important element which delivers the time scale to slave nodes. Using the time-division multiplexing for the high-speed channel processing with the use of wavelength division multiplexing (OTN, Optical Transport Network) and classic Ethernet networks as a transport layer systems needs the precision time synchronization which can be achieved with the use of Precision Time Protocol (PTP). The modeling apparatus of PTP messages exchanging within OTN multiplexers and IP-network based on the routers are suggested. The packet transferring through the network are given as sequence of simple processing steps. The impact of a network load on PTP information processing capacity on the routers and efficiency of the Forward Error Correction algorithm for OTN equipment are analyzed. The experimental distribution of variable delays on that network elements are given.

Cognitive flexibility is associated with sickness resilience.

Psychological constructs related to health outcomes and well-being, such as metacognitive beliefs, have been linked to executive functions in general, and cognitive flexibility more specifically. However, such effects have previously only been discussed on a theoretical level and behavioral flexibility has most often been measured through self-report, only approximating information processing capacities. Objectively measured executive functions may be a more potent predictor of health outcomes. We set out to test whether cognitive flexibility capacity was associated with sick leave in a medium sized company. We included 111 subjects of widely different occupations and assessed their executive functions using Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System test battery (D-KEFS). To assess cognitive flexibility capacity, we included Design Fluency (DF) and Verbal Fluency (VF) and computed these into an index of cognitive flexibility (DFVF). Detailed information on sick leave for the last 5 years was gathered from the company. Our results showed that there was a significant negative correlation between DFVF and sick leave [rs(109) = -0.23, p = 0.015] in the full group as well as in the group that had at least 1 day of sick leave [rs(72) = -0.25, p = 0.03]. The results withstood adjustment for sex, age, occupation, and several core executive functions as well as autistic and ADHD-traits. The results remained for separate analyses using DF or VF. Our main findings were conceptually replicated in a group of bipolar disorder patients. This study shows that objectively measured capacity of cognitive flexibility is associated with key health outcomes such as sick leave.

Opportunity abandonment: Why are entrepreneurs vulnerable to type I and II errors?

Opportunity actualization is a critical competency attributed to entrepreneurs, which has received widespread attention in the entrepreneurship literature. However, the knowledge of Entrepreneurial Opportunity Abandonment (EOA) decisions is limited. We, therefore, explore the relatively under-studied EOA, analyzing why entrepreneurs commit decision errors, abandon potentially viable opportunities (type I error) or pursue non-opportunity spaces (type II error), and ultimately forsake them later. Through a scoping literature review, we highlight more profound psychological variables that shape entrepreneurial opportunity behavior triggering EOA decisions. We discuss entrepreneurial cognitive limitations in articulating, concretizing, and communicating the opportunity. We argue that varying construal mindsets cause reification fallacies and create perceptual blocks in enunciating an opportunity idea. Further, subjective stakeholder feedback and biased information exchange largely shape EOA decisions, which are mediated through the information processing capacity of entrepreneurs. Finally, we propose four entrepreneurial decision-limiting hypotheses which require an empirical investigation.

Experimental demonstration of complex four-wave mixing processes with pump of orbital-angular-momentum superposition mode

Orbital angular momentum (OAM), characterized by a topological charge ℓ (ℓ integer), serves as a promising vehicle for carrying quantum information. Generating a nonclassical field involving two or more OAM modes can largely enhance the data-carrying capacity of quantum information processing. In this Letter, we present the implementation of a four-wave mixing (FWM) process, featuring a pump beam of a coherent OAM superposition mode and a probe beam of a single OAM mode. We generate twin beams encompassing multiple OAM modes and illustrate their quantum correlation when the pump beam assumes different coherent OAM superposition modes. Furthermore, we analyze the OAM mode components in each output field to deepen our understanding of the nonlinear interaction among different OAM modes. The obtained results show the rich structure of the nonlinear interaction of OAM modes in the FWM process and provide a perspective to study quantum information protocols.

Heterogeneous beliefs with information processing capacity constraints and asset pricing in a monetary economy

This paper proposes a monetary model to explore the influences of heterogeneous beliefs and information processing capacity constraints on the dynamics of asset prices. The capacity constraints not only influence the estimations of the capacity constrained investor, but also generate persistent disagreements among the investors. The model implies that reducing the levels of capacity constraints can alleviate the influences of heterogeneous beliefs and helps to stabilize financial markets. The model also reveals that introducing heterogeneous beliefs about both real and nominal sectors not only leads the stock with low monetary policy exposure to have significantly higher average return than the stock with high monetary policy exposure, but also can explain the mixed results about the relationship between the volatility and the risk premium of the aggregate stock market.

Exploring the Effects of Online Physician Voice Pitch Range and Filled Pauses on Patient Satisfaction in Mobile Health Communication

ABSTRACT The convenience of mobile devices has driven the widespread use of voice technology in mobile health communication, significantly improving the timeliness of online service. However, the issue of listening to therapeutic content, which requires great cognitive effort and may exceed the patient’s information processing capacity (i.e., information overload), is of concern. Based on information processing theory, this study reports how online physicians’ voice characteristics (pitch range and filled pauses) affect patient satisfaction. We obtained 10,585 mobile voice consultation records of 1,416 doctors from China’s largest mHealth platform and analyzed them using audio mining and empirical methods. Results showed that pitch range (β = 0.0539, p < .01) and filled pauses (β = 0.0365, p < .01) in doctors’ voice positively influenced online patient satisfaction. However, the effect of filled pauses becomes weaker for patients with higher health literacy and higher disease risk. This suggests that there is heterogeneity in the way different patients process audio information. This study provides important insights for guiding online physician behaviors, enhancing patient satisfaction, and improving mobile health platform management.

Habitat complexity influences neuron number in six species of Puerto Rican Anolis.

Elucidating the selective forces shaping the diversity of vertebrate brains continues to be a major area of inquiry, particularly as it relates to cognition. Historically brain evolution was interpreted through the lens of relative brain size; however, recent evidence has challenged this approach. Investigating neuroanatomy at a finer scale, such as neuron number, can provide new insights into the forces shaping brain evolution in the context of information processing capacity. Ecological factors, such as the complexity of a species' habitat, place demands on cognition that could shape neuroanatomy. In this study, we investigate the relationship between neuron number and habitat complexity in three brain regions across six closely related anole species from Puerto Rico. After controlling for brain mass, we found that the number of neurons increased with habitat complexity across species in the telencephalon and 'rest of the brain,' but not in the cerebellum. Our results demonstrate that habitat complexity has shaped neuroanatomy in the Puerto Rican anole radiation and provide further evidence of the role of habitat complexity in vertebrate brain evolution.

Fundamental probing limit on the high-order orbital angular momentum of light.

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light, possessing an infinite-dimensional degree of freedom, holds significant potential to enhance the capacity of optical communication and information processing in both classical and quantum regimes. Despite various methods developed to accurately measure OAM modes, the probing limit of the highest-order OAM remains an open question. Here, we report an accurate recognition of superhigh-order OAM using a convolutional neural network approach with an improved ResNeXt architecture, based on conjugated interference patterns. A type of hybrid beam carrying double OAM modes is utilized to provide more controllable degrees of freedom for greater recognition of the OAM modes. Our contribution advances the OAM recognition limit from manual counting to machine learning. Results demonstrate that, within our optical system, the maximum recognizable OAM modes exceed l = ±690 with an accuracy surpassing 99.93%, the highest achieved by spatial light modulator to date. Enlarging the active area of the CCD sensor extends the number of recognizable OAM modes to 1300, constrained only by the CCD resolution limit. Additionally, we explore the identification of fractional high-order OAM modes with a resolution of 0.1 from l = ±600.0 to l = ±600.9, achieving a high accuracy of 97.86%.

Cooperative activation of sodium channels for downgrading the energy efficiency in neuronal information processing

The Hodgkin–Huxley model assumes independent ion channel activation, although mutual interactions are common in biological systems. This raises the problem why neurons would favor independent over cooperative channel activation. In this study, we evaluate how cooperative activation of sodium channels affects the neuron’s information processing and energy consumption. Simulations of the stochastic Hodgkin–Huxley model with cooperative activation of sodium channels show that, while cooperative activation enhances neuronal information processing capacity, it greatly increases the neuron’s energy consumption. As a result, cooperative activation of sodium channel degrades the energy efficiency for neuronal information processing. This discovery improves our understanding of the design principles for neural systems, and may provide insights into future designs of the neuromorphic computing devices as well as systematic understanding of pathological mechanisms for neural diseases.

Springboarding and activity load: Constraints on managerial attention and dependency on advisory firms in cross-border acquisitions

In this study, we aim to better understand the springboard perspective by examining how emerging market firms manage the process of ‘recursive’ cross-border acquisitions. Based on the attention-based view of the firm and resource dependence theory, we propose that ‘recursive’ CBAs augment activity load, limiting decision-makers' information processing capacity. As a result, acquiring firms depend on external resources in the form of more professional advisors. This relationship strengthens when the target firm has a greater degree of product diversity but weakens when the acquiring firm has context-specific experience. From 2000 to 2022, we used a multi-country sample of 2621 CBAs from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and found support for our hypotheses.

The Fractal Geometry of the Human Brain: An Evolutionary Perspective.

The evolution of the brain in mammals is characterized by changes in size, architecture, and internal organization. Consequently, the geometry of the brain, and especially the size and shape of the cerebral cortex, has changed notably during evolution. Comparative studies of the cerebral cortex suggest that there are general architectural principles governing its growth and evolutionary development. In this chapter, some of the design principles and operational modes that underlie the fractal geometry and information processing capacity of the cerebral cortex in primates, including humans, will be explored. It is shown that the development of the cortex coordinates folding with connectivity in a way that produces smaller and faster brains.

A longitudinal study of the brain structure network changes in HIV patients with ANI: combined VBM with SCN.

Despite the widespread adoption of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) in managing HIV, the virus's impact on the brain structure of patients remains significant. This study aims to longitudinally explore the persistent effects of HIV on brain structure, focusing on changes in gray matter volume (GMV) and structural covariance network (SCN) among patients at the Asymptomatic Neurocognitive Impairment (ANI) stage. This research involved 45 HIV patients diagnosed with ANI and 45 demographically matched healthy controls (HCs). The participants were observed over a 1.5-year period. Differences in GMV between groups were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), while the graph theory model facilitated the establishment of topological metrics for assessing network indices. These differences were evaluated using two-sample t-tests and paired-sample t-tests, applying the network-based statistics method. Additionally, the study examined correlations between GMV and cognitive performance, as well as clinical variables. Compared with HCs, HIV patients demonstrated reduced GMV in the right middle temporal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus (FWE, p < 0.05), along with decreased betweenness centrality (BC) in the left anterior cingulate and paracingulate cortex. Conversely, an increase in the clustering coefficient (Cp) was observed (FDR, p < 0.05). During the follow-up period, a decline in GMV in the right fusiform gyrus (FWE, p < 0.05) and a reduction in node efficiency (Ne) in the triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus were noted compared with baseline measurements (FDR, p < 0.05). The SCN of HIV patients exhibited small-world properties across most sparsity levels (Sigma >1), and area under the curve (AUC) analysis revealed no significant statistical differences between groups. The findings suggest that despite the administration of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), HIV continues to exert slow and sustained damage on brain structures. However, when compared to HCs, the small-world properties of the patients' SCNs did not significantly differ, and the clustering coefficient, indicative of the overall information-processing capacity of the brain network, was slightly elevated in HIV patients. This elevation may relate to compensatory effects of brain area functions, the impact of cART, functional reorganization, or inflammatory responses.

What do we mean by “tailoring” of medical information during clinical interactions?

Although medical information is essential for all patients, information needs and information processing capacities vary between individual patients and over time and context, within patients. Therefore, it is often recommended to “tailor” medical information to individual patients during clinic visits. However, there is a lack of consensus on what “tailoring” in clinical interactions represents since the definitions provided in the literature thus far generally regard tailoring of written text, rather than in dialogue during face-to-face interactions. To provide clinicians with guidance on how to tailor information to individual patients and to allow researchers to assess the effectiveness thereof, clarity is urgently needed regarding what “tailoring” actually means and what it entails in practice.In this paper we outline the current challenges of applying the concept of “tailoring” to the clinical setting and present existing definitions. Importantly, we introduce a new working definition of the concept that encompasses essential informational and dialogic components. We believe this provisional definition promotes much-needed conceptual precision in how communication researchers and educators define and assess tailored information provision in clinical consultations.

Effect of habitual breakfast skipping on information processing capacity, cortical response, and cognitive flexibility among medical collegiate- a cross-sectional study.

Breakfast replenishes glucose homeostasis and provides other micro-nutrients for the normal functioning of the body after a long night at night. Habitually skipping breakfast leads not only to metabolic disturbances but also to neurocognitive impairment. Hence, the current study wascarried out to study the effect of skipping breakfast on neurocognitive functions. A 9-item breakfast questionnaire was distributed online to students for identifying habitual breakfast skippers from non-skippers based on inclusion criteria. Random blood glucose was noted and visual and auditory reaction time, critical flicker fusion frequency, and Stroop test were assessed in both groups to assess cognition. Forty one habitual breakfast skippers who met the inclusion criteria showed increased visual reaction time, and auditory reaction time indicating cognitive impairment. A significant reduction in the Stroop test was observed among the non-skipper group when compared to the skipper group. This study suggests that skipping breakfast diminishes neurocognitive functions like problem-solving, planning, judgment, information retention, and reasoning.

Polylysine‐Coated Surfaces Drive Competition in Chemical Reaction Networks to Enable Molecular Information Processing

AbstractThis work describes a competing activation network, which is regulated by chemical feedback at the liquid‐surface interface. Feedback loops dynamically tune the concentration of chemical components in living systems, thereby controlling regulatory processes in neural, genetic, and metabolic networks. Advances in systems chemistry demonstrate that chemical feedback could be designed based on similar concepts of using activation and inhibition processes. Most efforts, however, are focused on temporal feedback whereas biological networks are maintained by the interplay between temporal and spatial organization. Here, we designed a feedback system comprising a simple acid‐base equilibrium that can be perturbed by two opposing activation processes. Crucially, one of the processes is immobilized on the surface of a microfluidic channel using poly‐l‐lysine (PLL). We measured the capacity of the PLL‐coated channels to resist changes in pH in flow using a pH‐sensitive indicator, phenol red, and showed that this capacity can be increased by employing polyelectrolyte multilayers. Specifically, we found that the rate of local activation (i. e., the deprotonation of the immobilized lysine residues) could be significantly increased to delay the otherwise fast equilibrium. This effect allowed for encoding read and write operations, providing the potential to bestow CRNs with the capacity of molecular information processing.

CEO vigilance and hypercompetition: CEO attention in resource utilization and firm competitive aggressiveness

PurposeBy integrating perspectives from the resource-based view, attention-based view, upper echelon theory and competitive dynamics (CD), the authors seek to understand how chief executive officer (CEO) vigilance influences the way resources are utilized in relation to competitive behavior.Design/methodology/approachThis study's empirical analysis is conducted using a longitudinal design in the US software and IT services industry with a final sample consisting of 44 publicly traded firms and 471 firm-year observations from 1995 to 2009. The authors respectively use the fixed-effects negative binomial model and generalized estimating equation (GEE) model to test the effects of technology resource breadth on competitive intensity and competitive deviance and the interacting effects with CEO attention broadness and uniqueness.FindingsThis study's results show that CEO vigilance (attention broadness and uniqueness) interacts with technology resource breadth to jointly influence competitive intensity and deviance. Firms with vigilant CEOs utilize firm resources to compete less intensively but in an unconventional way.Practical implicationsThis study reveals that when CEOs have a broader focus and attend to a wide range of information, their ability to quickly utilize firm resources for formulating competitive actions decreases. Consequently, it is crucial for CEOs to acknowledge the limitations of their attentional capacity. They need to understand that the allocation of their attention and information processing capacity has significant implications for the speed and quality of their decision-making processes.Originality/valueThe authors conceptualize and operationalize CEO vigilance, which is a novel construct that has not been studied. The authors show that CEO vigilance plays critical roles in utilizing resources to compete. This study offers significant research implications for attention-based view, upper-echelons theory, CD perspective and resource-based view.

Dissociative identity disorder: a disorder of diagnostic and therapeutic paradoxes

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is life-long, childhood-onset, posttraumatic developmental disorder where chronic early-life maltreatment and attachment disturbances prevents the child’s development of a continuous sense of self across emotional states, relationships, and social contexts. As development proceeds, these self-states acquire a sense of themselves, a capacity for information processing, memory, emotion, and behavior. Conceptualizing DID involves paradoxes and apparent contradictions. DID has been categorized as a severe mental illness with major psychiatric comorbidities. Studies show that DID individuals have a unique personality organization with repeated, often covert posttraumatic reactivity, especially in relationships (e.g., therapy). Paradoxically, research shows that, during development, DID individuals preserve psychological resiliencies consistent with responsivity to long-term, psychodynamically informed treatment. These include, when not stressed, capacities for therapeutic alliance, reality testing, and observing ego.

Intelligence Offloading and the Neurosimulation of Developmental Agents

Cognitive offloading occurs when environmental affordances expand cognitive capacity while facilitating spatial and social behaviors. Capacity-related constraints are also important, particularly as embodied agents come online during development. Vast differences in brain size and offloading capacity exist across the tree of life. We take from multiple perspectives to understand the proportional contributions of internal models (brain) and externalized processing (offloading) in developing embodied computational agents. As developing nervous systems scale with body size and/or functional importance, offloading is also driven by neural capacity. Cognitive capacity is ultimately determined by various innate and environmental constraints. We propose a similar model for computationally developing cognitive agents. A regulatory model of cognition is proposed as a means to build cognitive systems that interface with biologically-inspired substrates. Multiple tradeoffs result from energetic, innate, and informational constraints, and determine the proportion of internal to external information processing capacity. As growth of a biologically-inspired substrate accelerates or decelerates over developmental time, it changes the acquisitional capacity of the agent. Our agent’s capacity limitations determine externalization potential, which is characterized by three parameters and two mathematical functions. The neurosimulation approach to intelligence offloading can be applied to a broad range of agent-based models and Artificial Intelligences.
