Innovative BIM technology application in the construction management of highway

Within the global architecture, engineering, and construction industry, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has significantly expanded. However, given the unique characteristics of road infrastructure, the application of BIM technology is still being explored. This article focuses on the Yuanchen Expressway, exploring innovative applications of BIM technology in comprehensive construction management. The project employs advanced technologies, including BIM, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the Internet of Things (IoT), to precisely identify critical nodes and breakthroughs. Supported by a detailed BIM model and a multi-level, diversified digital management platform, the project effectively addresses construction challenges in multiple tunnels, bridges, and complex interchanges, achieving intelligent construction innovation throughout the Yuanchen Expressway with BIM technology. By guiding construction through BIM models, utilizing a BIM+GIS-based management cloud platform system, and employing VR safety briefings, the project effectively reduces the difficulty of communication and coordination in project management, shortens the project measurement cycle, improves on-site work efficiency, and ensures comprehensive control and safety management. This article provides an exemplary case for the application of full-line construction management using BIM technology in the highway sector both in China and globally, offering new perspectives and strategies for highway construction management.

PLANNING OF CONSTRUCTION SITES USING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

Planning construction sites involves determining the layout of temporary facilities on the site and significantly impacts the safety and efficiency of construction activities. However, such planning is a complex combinatorial problem that encompasses multiple objectives and becomes more challenging with an increasing number of objects and constraints on work execution conditions. To reduce the complexity of creating such solutions, the use of intelligent design systems is facilitated. The study analyzed existing information modeling technologies for finding optimal solutions based on adopted efficiency criteria and identified drawbacks in such systems. Through theoretical research, the conclusion was drawn that current information technologies for optimizing construction site planning address issues only in isolated aspects, such as minimizing the areas of administrative or storage facilities or reducing costs for unproductive resource movements.

Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools for Assisting Low-Carbon Architectural Design: Merging the Use of Machine Learning, Large Language Models, and Building Information Modeling for Life Cycle Assessment Tool Development

The construction sector is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions and a major consumer of non-renewable resources. Architectural design decisions play a critical role in a building’s carbon footprint, making it essential to incorporate environmental analyses at various design stages. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and building information modeling (BIM) can support designers in achieving low-carbon architectural design. The proposed solution involves the development of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool. This study presents a novel approach to optimizing the environmental impact of architectural projects. It combines machine learning (ML), large language models (LLMs), and building information modeling (BIM) technologies. The first case studies present specific examples of tools developed for this purpose. The first case study details a machine learning-assisted tool used for estimating carbon footprints during the design phase and shows numerical carbon footprint optimization results. The second case study explores the use of LLMs, specifically ChatGPT, as virtual assistants to suggest optimizations in architectural design and shows tests on the suggestions made by the LLM. The third case study discusses integrating BIM in the form of an IFC file, carbon footprint analysis, and AI into a comprehensive 3D application, emphasizing the importance of AI in enhancing decision-making processes in architectural design.

Application of BIM Technology in Structural Design of Prefabricated Building Based on Big Data Simulation Modeling Analysis

Aiming at the complex steel bar layout problem in prefabricated building, this research proposes a structural design method of prefabricated building based on big data simulation modeling building information modeling technology. It includes the reinforcement arrangement model based on agent path planning, the intelligent reinforcement arrangement of frame based on artificial potential field method and path optimization, and the modeling of Building information modeling. When analyzing the reinforcement arrangement effect of beam column joints in Prefabricated building, the calculation time of top corner joints is the shortest, 76.8 seconds, while that of middle layer joints is the longest, 141.7 seconds. In direction Y and direction X, differential evolution has the longest calculation time, 27s and 26.57s respectively, while particle swarm optimization algorithm has the shortest calculation time, 2.84s and 3.02s respectively. The algorithm designed through research is significantly superior to other algorithms in terms of computational time. In general, through building information modeling technology and big data simulation modeling, this study realized the collision free layout of rebar in beam column joints of prefabricated building. This improves the speed and efficiency of deepening design, and provides a new solution for structural design of prefabricated building.

Application Strategy of BIM Technology in the Forward Design of Bridges

Bridge engineering is highly specialized and has spatial characteristics, which puts forward higher requirements for design work. The advancement of information technology has provided ample tools to facilitate bridge design work, with building information modeling (BIM) technology being one of them. BIM technology ensures the efficiency and quality of the forward design of bridges, while also reducing construction costs. This article starts with defining the concept of BIM technology, followed by a discussion on its advantages in bridge design and application process, which serves as a reference for other bridge designers.

BIM-Based Digital Construction Strategies to Evaluate Carbon Emissions in Green Prefabricated Buildings

In this paper, we explore the integration of building information modeling (BIM) technology to assess carbon emissions, emphasizing the unique contributions to smart and sustainable approaches in prefabricated buildings and focusing on the application of digital construction strategies facilitated by BIM to evaluate carbon emissions in green prefabricated buildings, with a detailed case study on C-House at Southeast University, Nanjing, China. The research methodology involved creating a BIM model of C-House in Rhino and collecting data from the operationalization phase. This research work delves into analyzing the structural components, on-site assembling process, and evaluation of carbon emissions by using a BIM-based assessment, as well as the energy load and consumption of prefabricated components, including sustainable PV panels, to enhance building efficiency and sustainability. The findings uncover the life cycle of C-House, which spans seven stages, compared with the five stages of conventional builds. Currently in its third cycle, C-House exhibits significant reductions of 70.57% in carbon emissions during the second cycle and 43.53% in the first one. This highlights the pattern showing that the prolonged reuse of prefabricated buildings leads to decreasing emissions over time. Such results underscore the potential carbon emission reductions and environmental advantages of reusing green prefabricated buildings. Furthermore, this study provides insights into the entire life cycle of the building, from inception to occupation and post-phase performance evaluation. By employing BIM for modeling, simulation, and analysis, we offer practical insights into the application of smart technologies for sustainable construction practices, significantly contributing to the advancement of green and digital construction technologies.

The impact of digitalization and digital transformation of the construction sector on the country's economy can hardly be overestimated, as it stimulates economic growth, improves production efficiency, increases labor productivity and reduces costs, and enables market players to form a competitive advantage. In 2024, the Russian construction sector is transitioning to the mandatory use of information modeling technologies, which indicates the progressive integration of digital technologies in construction. The purpose of this article is to identify the challenges and trends of digital transformation of the construction industry in 2024, formed by the conditions of the current turbulent economic situation in Russia. The article analyzes domestic and foreign scientific publications in the field of digitalization of construction, as well as current statistical and analytical data.

The article analyzes the current trends in the development and implementation of information modeling technologies in the implementation of investment and construction projects in Russia. The main problems faced by the subjects of construction in this area are identified. The relevance of the organization of the processes of interaction between participants in construction projects on the integrated engineering platform is substantiated. A comprehensive engineering mechanism has been formed, including BIM and GIS modeling, a number of auxiliary information platforms, and various territorial levels.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) Survey and Building Information Modeling (BIM) of The Edmund Pettus Bridge: A Case Study

Abstract. The comprehensive digital documentation of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a symbol of the American Civil Rights Movement located in Selma, Alabama, serves as an example of integrating Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies for the conservation of heritage infrastructure. This study aimed to employ advanced TLS and other Reality Capture (RC) techniques to generate a high-resolution, three-dimensional representation of the bridge, thereby aiding in its structural assessment and preservation. Utilizing TLS alongside 360-degree photography and UAV surveys, the project achieved detailed coverage of the bridge's architectural and structural features. The data collected was processed into a BIM model using Autodesk Revit, offering comprehensive analysis and preservation planning. The findings from this research highlighted previously undetected areas of material degradation and structural vulnerabilities, emphasizing the value of TLS and BIM in revealing critical insights into the condition of heritage structures. This project preserved the digital memory of an iconic Civil Rights landmark and set a framework for applying digital documentation technologies in heritage infrastructure conservation. The success of this methodology offers a valuable precedent for future conservation efforts, showcasing how RC technologies can enhance the preservation of historical sites and ensure their legacy is maintained for future generations.

Study on the Optimization and Expansion of the Architectural Design Process by BIM Technology

In the contemporary realm of architecture, Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology is gradually reshaping the holistic management of architectural design, construction, and operation with its distinctive advantages. Despite the widespread adoption of BIM technology, numerous challenges persist in its practical implementation, such as the prevalence of information silos and hindered collaborative workflows. These impediments constrain the further advancement of BIM technology, consequently jeopardizing the quality and efficiency of architectural projects. Confronted with this reality, there exists a pressing need to delve deeply into the optimization pathways of BIM technology in the architectural design process, aiming to devise effective remedial strategies. This article will embark from the current application status of BIM technology in architectural design, expounding upon the fundamental principles, scope of application, and optimization strategies of BIM technology. Through this analysis, it seeks to explore avenues for maximizing the utilization of BIM technology in optimizing architectural design processes, thereby enhancing the overall quality and efficiency of architectural projects. This study not only contributes to propelling technological innovation within the architecture industry but also furnishes novel perspectives and directions for subsequent related research endeavors.

Application of microencapsulated phase change materials in prefabricated building projects based on building information modeling technology

Faced with the rapidly increasing urban population, there is a surge in demand for building construction, accompanied by an incessant rise in building energy consumption. To promote sustainable development and mitigate building energy consumption, this study proposes the utilization of microencapsulated phase change materials in prefabricated buildings through the integration of building information modeling. We prepare polymethyl methacrylate/n-eicosane/wood cellulose nanocrystal microcapsules using Pickering emulsion through the solvent evaporation method. The results showed that the material exhibits optimal comprehensive performance at a core–shell ratio of 2:1, with a melting enthalpy of 152.10 J/g and a coating rate of 60.27%. However, when the core–shell ratio increases to 2.5:1, significant performance degradation occurs due to phase change material leakage. The materials show excellent cycling performance in cold-hot cycling tests, maintaining their melting enthalpy value above 97% even after 100 cycles. Moreover, materials with a core–shell ratio of 2:1 exhibit good thermal stability up to high temperatures (160 °C). In conclusion, this study has great significance for advancing the progress of prefabricated buildings and sustainable buildings.

Applying Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technology in Pre-Tender Cost Estimation of Construction Projects: A Case Study in Iran

The pre-tender cost estimation serves as the foundation for determining the project cost in the early stages and is crucial for all parties involved in the tendering process. It is expected to be highly accurate. However, industry surveys have advocated that in the Iranian construction industry, the pre-tender estimated costs of construction projects are not sufficiently accurate during the bidding stage. Building information modelling (BIM) technology is a modern digital tool deployed in the construction industry that has seen substantial growth of application. It employs useful tools in different sectors and has extended its involvement in various stages of the project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance. This study examines and assesses the status of BIM development in Iran for its applicability in the pre-tender cost estimating process in construction projects. The findings of this study indicate that while there is a limited number of Iranian building projects’ BIM models that possess the required quality and capabilities for BIM-based cost estimation, the results obtained are more precise when compared to existing manual methods. Additionally, utilising BIM-based cost estimation significantly reduces the time required for this process by enhancing the speed of cost estimation operations. An innovative evaluation framework for assessing the quality and functionalities of BIM models is presented, which improves the accuracy of cost estimation before the bidding process in Iran’s construction industry. The research findings demonstrate the enhanced accuracy and effectiveness of BIM as compared to conventional approaches. It also suggests the incorporation of AI technology for model evaluation, which has the potential to become an established global industry standard.

UTILIZATION OF BIM TECHNOLOGIES FOR ENHANCING THE EFFICIENCY OF WATER SUPPLY AND WASTEWATER SYSTEMS DESIGN

Problem statement. The need for the formation and development of human resources in the construction industry of Ukraine to create a competitive sphere that complies with high standards of quality and efficiency, operating based on modern financial, economic, technical, and organizational mechanisms. One method to achieve the goals of innovative development is the modernization of architectural and construction design and engineering networks, particularly through the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies. These technologies enable effective decision-making at all stages of the life cycle of buildings and structures − from the initial idea to the stage of operation and even the dismantling of water supply and wastewater system engineering networks. The purpose of the article − to explore the utilization of BIM technologies to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of designing water supply and wastewater systems Conclusions. The application of BIM technologies in the design of water supply and wastewater systems significantly improves work efficiency. Creating digital models facilitates the interaction of all participants in the construction process and minimizes errors and conflicts during the design phase. The success of modernizing the construction industry became possible through active collaboration of all stakeholders. Public advocacy and participation in addressing industry issues provided a broader perspective on problem-solving. The implementation of BIM technologies allows for the development and improvement of water supply and wastewater system projects, contributing to work optimization and project planning enhancement.

BIM for maintenance planning of façades in precast concrete buildings

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the different system approach using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology that is equipped with decision making processes. Maintenance planning and management are integral components of the construction sector, serving the broader purpose of post-construction activities and processes. However, as Precast Concrete (PC) construction projects increase in scale and complexity, the interconnections among these activities and processes become apparent, leading to planning and performance management challenges. These challenges specifically affect the monitoring of façade components for corrective and preventive maintenance actions.Design/methodology/approachThe concept of maintenance planning for façades, along with the main features of information and communication technology tools and techniques using building information modeling technology, is grounded in the analysis of numerous literature reviews in PC building scenarios.FindingsThis research focuses on an integrated system designed to analyze information and support decision-making in maintenance planning for PC buildings. It is based on robust data collection regarding concrete façades' failures and causes. The system aims to provide appropriate planning decisions and minimize the risk of façade failures throughout the building's lifetime.Originality/valueThe study concludes that implementing a research framework to develop such a system can significantly enhance the effectiveness of maintenance planning for façade design, construction and maintenance operations.

Improving emergency evacuation capacity for subway stations based on agent-based modelling

Purpose Modern subway transportation systems need to satisfy increasing safety demands to rapidly evacuate passengers under hazardous emergency circumstances, such as fires, accidents or terrorist attacks, to reduce passenger injuries or life losses. The emergency evacuation capacity (EEC) of a subway station needs to be revised timely, in case passenger demand increases or the evacuation route changes in the future. However, traditional ways of estimating EEC, e.g. fire drills are time- and resource-consuming and are difficult to revise from time to time. The purpose of this study is to establish an intuitive modelling approach to increase the EEC of subway stations in a stepwised manner. Design/methodology/approach This study develops an approach to combine agent-based evacuation modelling and building information modelling (BIM) technology to estimate the total evacuation time of a subway station. Findings Evacuation time can be saved (33% in the studied case) from iterative improvements including stopping escalators running against the evacuation flow and modifying the geometry around escalator exits. Such iterative improvements rely on integrating agent-based modelling and BIM. Originality/value The agent-based model can provide a more realistic simulation of intelligent individual movements under emergency circumstances and provides precise feedback on locations of evacuation bottlenecks. This study also examined the effectiveness of two rounds of stepwise improvements in terms of operation or design to increase the EEC of the station.

Green retrofitting of heritage buildings based on (3Ts) framework: An applied case study

Diverse heritage architecture characterizes Port Said in Egypt, reflecting European and Arab influences. Suez Canal heritage villas comprise 25% of the total listed heritage buildings in the city. Thus, it is important to retrofit them, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By reviewing the previous literature related to the green retrofitting of heritage buildings, the (3Ts) framework can be considered a holistic framework that covers the latest trends due to its three components: targets, tools, and tasks, which help the success of the process through a holistic vision of supporting building information modeling (BIM) technologies and organizing stakeholders' involvement. This paper aims to apply the (3Ts) framework to Suez Canal heritage villas in Port Said, Egypt. The applied study is based on how stakeholders perceive their input and decision-making, measuring the climate parameters, proposing several green retrofits, and integrating them into green scenarios. Evaluation of scenarios is conducted by utilizing the Design Builder simulation software. Additionally, the Skelion plugin calculates the photovoltaic system's (PVs) energy generation. The results indicated that the total energy savings could reach approximately 12%–74% and nearly 10%–73% CO₂ emissions reduction without affecting heritage values.

Introduction of construction planning with building information modeling (BIM) technology systems at SMK 26 Jakarta

The construction industry is undergoing significant transformation in the era of globalization and technological advancements, particularly with the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems. Accelerating the implementation of BIM in Indonesia requires collaboration among various parties, including academia, practitioners, and institutions. Therefore, it is crucial for students to learn about BIM to prepare a competent and adaptable workforce for the future development of construction technology. The aim of this activity is to enhance understanding of the importance of introducing construction planning with BIM technology systems to students at SMK Negeri 26 Jakarta, in preparation for them to become ready-to-use workforce in the construction industry, which is increasingly oriented towards information technology. The implementation method involves delivering material sessions followed by questionnaire sessions to assess the level of understanding among students. The results of this activity indicate that 26 students (53.1%) are very proficient in this subject, 19 students (38.8%) are categorized as proficient, and 4 students (8.2%) are categorized as adequately proficient.

Kaedah dan Kegunaan dalam Perlaksanaan Integrasi BIM-GIS dan Potensinya dalam Pengurusan Sistem Saliran: Satu Tinjauan

The ability of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to manage three-dimensional (3D) data is increasing along with advancements in current technology, and this ability can be further enhanced through the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. While the combination of BIM and GIS technologies provides significant benefits to human life, there are several challenges and limitations that need to be addressed for successful implementation. Therefore, research on previous articles will be conducted to examine the challenges and potential of this integration. This paper will begin with searching for relevant previous articles using appropriate keywords on Web of Science and Scopus. The search will be conducted in two parts, articles related to BIM-GIS integration with keywords "BIM" AND "GIS," and articles concerning the usage of 3D data in GIS applications for drainage system management using keywords "GIS" AND "3D" AND "DRAINAGE." From these articles, observations will be made regarding (1) the structure of BIM-GIS integration data, (2) implemented integration methods, (3) utilization of integration models, and (4) the potential of BIM-GIS Integration in managing 3D drainage system data. The research identifies key challenges in BIM-GIS integration, including differences in class numbers, dissimilar class arrangement, geometry creation methods, and georeference system application. To address these challenges, standard protocols based on specific requirements need to be established by considering organizational needs to ensure a consistent integration process. The paper also recognizes significant potential in employing BIM-GIS integration for drainage system management.

Problems of implementing BIM technologies in the educational process

The article discusses educational process improvement for architect training concerning modern technologies, such as digitalization, information modeling, and cyber technologies. Reviewed and proposed mechanisms, methods, and means of modernization of education, concerning the introduction of BIM technologies to the bachelor's and master’s training course for ensuring quality of professional training of construction and architectural personnel. Influence factors, trends, and alternatives for implementing the concept of BIM in the educational process in the form of end-to-end integrated design and joint work in a team are identified. At the same time, the lack of personnel in Ukraine with in-depth knowledge of BIM technologies of various levels is emphasized. The article focuses on the relevance of the organization of progressive training, starting from the junior courses of a specialized university or college (institutions of higher education) to professional advanced training courses or other post-graduation training in licensed training centers. Emphasized are the creation of educational programs and their bringing to the standards of information modeling - as effective ways of construction and architectural personnel training. That involves completion of relevant training for bachelors, becoming proficient at the BIM-management course by masters, interdisciplinary interaction in education, the skills to manage corporate content, generate an IFC container, etc. The following components are emphasized: the need to retrain the teaching staff, improve the qualifications of teachers and provide proper resources, expand the means of enhanced automation, acquire BIM application experience of leading international education institutions, attract modern professionals with adequate experience, to actively demonstrate the BIM software potential, to consult production facilities, to conduct multi-level stimulation - as essential links of a single BIM chain. The set of technologies that must be mastered by a student during BIM training, the relationship of educational tasks, data transfer formats, and standards for creating an information model for effective management of the design, construction, and operation of facilities in the near future are discussed.

Current Situation Analysis of Low-carbon Community Based on BIM Technology and Related Problem Solving Measures

In the low-carbon construction target system, low-carbon buildings play a crucial role in achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions. As China's urbanization development continues to deepen, communities have become the primary living environment for both urban and rural residents. Consequently, research on building carbon emissions has shifted from individual buildings to encompassing low-carbon community building facilities. Against the backdrop of digital intelligence and new quality productivity development, promoting the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology for low-carbon transformation in community buildings can effectively contribute to China's low-carbon goals. The utilization of BIM technology enhances planning and construction efficiency across various types of communities while minimizing rework and energy consumption. Furthermore, applying BIM technology to equipment and materials management enables better control over carbon emissions during building operation and maintenance stages, thereby fostering harmonious development between urban energy consumption and the community’s ecological environment.
