Enhancing information literacy skills of undergraduate medical students : a curriculum and policy analysis

With the growing size and complexity of library collections coupled with the explosion of medical information in diverse formats, medical students require competencies in identifying, locating, retrieving, evaluating, synthesizing, and effectively utilizing information. There is a need, therefore, for medical students to acquire Information Literacy Skills (ILS) to master content, extend their investigations, and become more self-directed and life-long learners. The objectives of the study were to: examine the ILS curricula in place to facilitate the delivery of ILS among medical undergraduate students at Moi University and the University of Nairobi, and to assess the methods used to enhance the delivery of ILS among medical undergraduate students at Moi University and University of Nairobi. A pragmatic research paradigm with a mixed-methods approach was employed in the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design applied within a multiple case study, combining concurrent triangulation in data collection and analysis. The target population was 685 students comprising 6th-year medicine, 5th-year dentistry, and 4th-year nursing students, and 182 lecturers. A combination of stratified simple random and purposive sampling techniques was employed to obtain 353 medical undergraduate students, 62 lecturers in medicine, dentistry, and nursing specializations, 2 university librarians, 2 heads of medical librarians, and 6 heads of departments. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview schedules. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented using frequency distribution tables and bar charts while qualitative data was analyzed thematically based on the objectives and research questions and presented as narrative. The findings revealed that although ILS curriculum and policy were available, there was little implementation and accountability, indicating that the ILS curriculum and policy had not been reviewed to incorporate contemporary ILS. The study concluded that students had not acquired sufficient ILS competencies due to a combination of factors such as poor perception of ILS, low pedagogical expertise among ILS trainers, and absence of sustainable ICT infrastructure to facilitate the acquisition and utilization of fourth ICT revolutions’ competencies. The study recommends that institutions of higher learning should introduce four ILS credit-scored course units.

Social media is a very popular information dissemination platform, with one in three people worldwide and two-thirds of internet users using social media. There are many ways to obtain the required information, one of which is by accessing the social media platform Twitter. In order to obtain information effectively and efficiently, students need a skill in processing information, which is information literacy. For students, information literacy skills will help them in finding and obtaining information critically and not being deceived by information whose accuracy is uncertain. This study aims to explore the use of the social media platform Twitter and its impact on the information literacy skills of students in the Library and Information Science Program at Universitas Negeri Padang in 2020. The research method used a qualitative approach with interview techniques as the data collection instrument. The results of the data analysis can be concluded that Twitter plays a significant role in improving information literacy among students. The majority of respondents use Twitter for various purposes, ranging from finding the latest information, verifying the validity of information, to sharing personal experiences. Most students use this platform as a source of up-to-date information, but there are also those who actively join specific accounts focused on literacy and learning. Thus, Twitter is considered an effective means of improving information literacy skills among students.

Information literacy skills of health professions students in assessing YouTube medical education content

IntroductionYouTube is a popular social media video platform used by health professions students for medical education. YouTube videos vary in quality, and students need to be able to evaluate and select high-quality videos to supplement their learning. Evaluating the quality of YouTube videos is an essential information literacy skill, and the Association of College and Research Libraries updated the framework of information literacy to include collaborative platforms such as YouTube. Research is needed to understand and explore the information literacy proficiency of students in the health professions who are using YouTube videos as learning resources.MethodsThis exploratory expert-novice study investigated the information literacy proficiency of students in evaluating the quality of medical education YouTube videos. Students (n = 89) and experts (n = 23) evaluated three preselected medical education YouTube videos of varying quality using the Medical Quality Video Evaluation Tool (MQ-VET).ResultsResults of two-way mixed repeated-measures ANOVA found experts assigned significantly lower ratings to low- and medium-quality videos than students. In other words, students were less information proficient in selecting videos due to overrating source credibility, education quality, and production quality, along with having lower expectations and finding videos more useful.DiscussionThe tendency of students to overrate lower-quality videos raises concerns about their selection of educational content outside structured learning environments. If students select videos to watch outside the classroom, they could unintentionally learn medical skills from low-quality videos. These insights suggest a need for teachers to select only high-quality videos for students and for more focused curricular strategies to enhance students’ abilities in critically assessing YouTube resources for medical education.

Program Wise Information Literacy Skills of Students

The current study furthers the understanding of the Information Literacy (IL) competency skill levels between the health science and non-health science students in the United Arab Emirates. IL-HUMASS survey on information literacy questionnaire was partially adopted (17 categories) for surveying the IL competency skill levels between the Health and Non-Health students at College A. The questionnaire comprised four information competency categories: “Information Searching, “Information Evaluation, Information Processing/Application, and Information Dissemination and Communication”. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to test the hypotheses. The research findings revealed that among all participants the levels of Motivational Engagement (ME) in the four competence areas were higher, than their levels of Self-Efficacy (SE).Further, interestingly, students enrolled in non-health programs displayed higher levels of both ME and SE in all four categories. Additionally, there were significant variations in IL Self-Efficacy levels between the two programs across the categories. Besides, the application of Pinto’s IL-HUMASS survey instrument to a new user population has provided valuable insights. These insights highlight the importance of considering motivation and self-efficacy levels when designing information literacy programs, especially for health science students. This study is possibly the first in the UAE conducted on a global sample comprising 22 nationalities.

Integrated Instruction to Develop Information Literacy Skills of Undergraduate Students

This study designed a technologically integrated course to develop the information literacy skills of 100 first-year students from the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, Thailand. The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model was integrated into an information literacy skills instructional design. A pre-and post-test design was adopted to measure the students’ information literacy skills. During the sessions, interactive open sources were employed as the technology-integrated instruction for the online classroom learning activities. After the course completion, participants retook the test, from which it was found that the post-test information literacy scores were significantly higher than the pre-test scores for all information literacy components. However, the low-performing students’ pre-and post-test scores for information evaluation showed no statistically significant differences. Therefore, developing the information evaluation skills of this group should be considered. This study’s findings could be beneficial for instructors and learning designers seeking to design courses that develop the information literacy skills of undergraduate students.

Analysis of College Student Technology Literacy and Information Literacy Skills: E-Learning Activities Based on Online Platforms in Higher Education

Online platform-based e-learning makes use of a variety of technologies as communication and information mediums, encouraging students to engage in productive and worthwhile learning activitiesThis study intends to ascertain the abilities and impact of students' technological and informational literacy on their participation in online learning activities for e-learning. A descriptive quantitative research methodology is used here. Universitas Samudra and Universitas Islam Riau were the sites of the research, which took place from June to August of 2023. Students in the 155-student sample population of the Biology Education Study Program. Using google forms, interviews, and observations, a random sampling technique is used. Validation and reliability tests were conducted on the research instrument. The use of technological devices to obtain information falls into the very good category; locating available technological devices and using technological devices fall into the good category; while the use of technological devices for self-development falls into the moderate category, according to research on technological literacy skills. Information literacy among students in higher education is significantly influenced by technical literacy abilities, with an influence of 63.6%, according to the significance value (sig) 0.00 < (α) 0.05, which means that Ho is rejected and Ha is approved. According to the regression equation Y = 0.237 + 0.922X, the value of information literacy abilities will rise with each increase in the value of technology literacy skills. the significance of improving students' technology and information literacy skills in higher education to prepare them for the era of the digital revolution

Librarians as Teachers: Effecting Change in Composition Instruction

This study assessed student research papers using a rubric to determine the information literacy skills of students in introductory composition classes. Librarians taught a pilot composition course that infused information literacy (IL) into the traditional English curriculum. The students' IL skills were compared to those of undergraduates enrolled in a traditional composition class, who received only a one-shot library instruction session. Students in the information literacy composition course scored better than their counterparts in six of seven IL skill categories. Results support greater integration of information literacy and composition curricula as a path forward for student success.

A Study on Information Literacy among the Postgraduate Students and Research Scholars of Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India

Information literacy encompasses a range of abilities that enable individuals to recognize the necessity for information, effectively locate and evaluate it, and utilize it efficiently. It is competency that equips individuals with the necessary understanding of information, its characteristics, and the various formats in which it is available. This includes the skills to discern relevant information from irrelevant sources and an ethical approach to consuming and disseminating information. In this study, the information literacy skills of postgraduate students and research scholars at Nagarjuna University were evaluated using a standardized questionnaire. The findings revealed that these groups encounter challenges when attempting to access required information. Additionally, it highlighted the need for them to enhance their proficiency in utilizing electronic resources effectively.

Promoting Information Literacy and Visual Literacy Skills in Undergraduate Students Using Infographics

ABSTRACTBecause research and communication proficiency is ubiquitous in the academic and professional world, teaching students the necessary information literacy (IL) and visual literacy (VL) skills has become increasingly important. Integrating IL and VL pedagogy into substantive coursework can enhance students’ comprehension of the material and teach them to make a meaningful contribution to public awareness and understanding of political science. Yet, faculty often find it challenging to include instruction in these skills with necessary coverage of substantive course material. This article discusses the use of an infographic assignment in an introductory American government course as a tool to teach literacy skills and to reinforce substantive course concepts. Encouraging students to distill academic research into an infographic requires them to understand the process of information creation, the role of visuals in communication, and how scholarship acts as a conversation—all key components of literacy in higher education.

Development of Inquiry Learning Model Based on Information Literature Skills for Total Quality Management Courses

This research aims to develop an inquiry learning model based on information literacy skills for the total quality management course. This research uses research and development (R&D)—data collection techniques using questionnaires, interview guidelines, observation. as well as tests and non-test. The data analysis techniques used are (a) data reduction, (b) presenting the data, and (c) drawing conclusions and verifying the subjects of this research are students at the Management and Accounting Study Program, Trianandra College of Economics (STIE) Jakarta. The results of this study indicate that the information literacy-based inquiry learning model developed through research and development has proven to be effective in improving learning outcomes and information literacy skills of students majoring in management at STIE Trianandra Jakarta. This is evidenced by the results of small group trials which show the average student pretest results are smaller than the average post-test results (36.33, < 41.69), with the difference in the value of the two is 5.36. b. The information literacy-based inquiry learning model developed through research and development is feasible to be implemented as a learning model in the TQM course at the STIE Anandra Jakarta management study program. First, the characteristics of the appropriate students are all digital natives, and are already familiar with digital devices, Second, based on the results of small trials and large group trials, both students and lecturers assessed that the learning group materials developed through research and development had good interest in the aspects of attracting attention, relevance, self-confidence, and satisfaction.

Uncovering the Information Literacy and Communication Skills of Biology Students in The State University of Makassar

Today's world necessitates information literacy and communication abilities. Mastery of information literacy and communication skills has a long-term impact on students' careers, hence information literacy and communication skills should be taught from the beginning of the lecture, while students are still in first year. This study aimed to assess information literacy skills and communication skills of students in Biology department, State University of Makassar. The population of this study was all first year students (six classes), in the academic year of 2018/2019, who took the General Biology Course. Three classes (N = 112) became samples of this research. The research instruments were rubric of information literacy skills and communication skills. Two observers were employed to examine students skill occurring in four meetings course. The study found that Biology student information literacy skills are generally in progress level. Meanwhile, the majority of the students’ communication skills are in able tier level (level 2). The results of mapping information literacy and student communication skills can be used as input for educators in designing learning.

Information literacy training for teenager-students of Islamic boarding school on the digital era

The industrial revolution makes an impact on social change, especially with the presence of social media, which then accelerates the dissemination of information. However, because of the large amount of information that is spread in cyberspace, not all information is filtered properly and often results in the emergence of false information (hoax). In order to overcome these problems, each people must have information literacy skills, including adolescent students of boarding school. To improve the knowledge and information literacy skills of adolescent students of boarding schools in the digital era, we held training on information literacy. The training was held at Al-Amin Islamic Boarding School Mojokerto for 2 days. The participants were 70 male students of classes X and XI at Al-Amin Islamic Boarding High School Mojokerto. The training was carried out in 4 stages, namely, pretest, information literacy material, opinion article writing material, and posttest. Based on the difference test, the average value of the pretest was 78.63 and the post-test was 87.02. While the Paired Sample T-Test obtained a value of 0.000 0.05. This shows that there is a significant difference in the information literacy skills of participants before and after the training. Thus, conclusively, the training in information literacy can improve the information literacy skills of adolescent students at Al-Amin Islamic Boarding High School Mojokerto.

Integrating information practices into everyday teaching

This paper reports on the information practices and information literacy (IL) skills of South Korean elementary school students from the perspectives of working teachers. Key to this investigation was the notion of information practice, and how this is shaped by the practice architecture found in an educational setting. A sequential mixed design was undertaken to investigate these ideas which consisted of exploratory interviews with 4 elementary school teachers and was followed by a questionnaire which analysed the responses of 314 elementary school teachers. Findings indicate that in this setting, teachers, students and pre-set curricular content serve as the most frequently used information sources for students during their everyday classes. We pay specific attention to the ongoing centrality of the textbook, in its traditional paper format, to the ways in which teachers design learning activities, and suggest that this limits the diversity of informational approaches to which young South Korean learners are exposed. While these learners are engaged, they are limited in terms of informational genre since teachers and textbooks were found to be dominant information proxies. Activities in which students engage in active seeking or scanning are rarer. Contexts with such a configuration may be hindering the development of critical information literacy skills that are vital in dealing with the abundance of information faced by individuals today.

Personal health and nutrition information-seeking attitudes and behaviours of first year Canadian and United States veterinary students

Objective: To identify the primary sources of information first year Canadian and US veterinary students relied on for their personal health and nutrition information, and to explore their attitudes towards, and perceptions of, health information resources.
 Background: Though the animal health information-seeking behaviours (HISB) of veterinary students have been explored, research regarding personal HISB of this professional student population is limited.
 Evidentiary value: Participants were first year veterinary students (n=322) at the five Canadian veterinary schools and five randomly selected US veterinary schools. An online questionnaire was used to gather students’ demographic information, sources of health and nutrition information, and information-seeking attitudes and perceptions. This study may impact practice at the institutional level for veterinary educators.
 Methods: STATA 15.1© was used for quantitative analysis; involving multivariate logistic regression models, univariate analyses, and measures of frequency.
 Results: Results indicated high reliance on the Internet for personal health 213/322 (66%) and nutrition 196/322 (61%) information. While respondents revealed high trust levels in dietary recommendations from family doctors, 132/322 (41%) of students revealed their doctor did not provide any information on healthy diets. Students who reported the use of peer-reviewed journal articles for personal nutrition information were at greater odds of having confidence in knowing where to find nutrition information (Odds Ratio [OR] = 6.61, p<0.001).
 Conclusion: Participating students reported a high reliance on the Internet search engine Google, and a general lack of guidance from medical professionals regarding general health needs.
 Application: Veterinary schools should consider this information to enhance student information literacy skills, particularly to facilitate personal HISB, and consequently help in management of personal health throughout the growing demands of the programme.

Perceptions of Teacher Education Students in Kerala about Information Literacy Skills: An assessment

Information literacy skills are essential for individuals to be life-long learners and to be the catalysts of information societies. The review of literature shows that there is a dearth of studies on assessment of information literacy (IL) skills of teacher education students, particularly in India. Assessments of both perceptions of teacher educations students about their IL competencies and their actual level of IL skills were made in many western countries either using standardised tools or locally developed tools. The present study is intended to address the gap in literature in the area of perceptions of student-teachers in Kerala about their IL competencies. A survey was conducted among the students of teacher education institutions (TEIs) in government, government aided and unaided sectors. Sample was selected from students specialising in Languages, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences across Kerala. The questionnaire for the purpose was adapted from previously tested ones following ACRL Standards, and adapted to make it appropriate for the Indian context. Analysis of 772 responses revealed that teacher education students in Kerala have high level of perceptions about their IL competencies. Previous investigations reported that when assessments are made, usually students over-estimate or under-estimate their IL self-efficacies. Therefore, it is recommended that another study to be conducted to assess the actual IL skills of these students.

Measuring the Information Literacy Skills of Secondary School Students of Bhimber, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)

Information literacy is defined as a set of skills required to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information. Due to the knowledge explosion and the availability of a vast amount ofinformation resources, this era is known as the “information era”. In the21stcentury, mere replication of knowledge is not enough rather the survival of the personnel is contingent with the practice specific information literacy skills Information literacy skills empower individuals by allowing them to develop their critical thinking skills, enabling them to become independent lifelong learners. This study was conducted to measurethe information literacy skills of secondary school students. The sample comprised 125 secondary school students of Bhimber, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). An online test was used to measure the level of information literacy of students. The test comprised 32 items. The time limit of the test was 60 minutes. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. It is important to mention that out of 125 students, only 5 students attained a high score ranging between 80.6 and 90.5.These students finished their test within 41-50 minutes. Whereas the rest of the students scored less than 50%. It was concluded that the selected secondary school students could not use technology in their day-to-day activities. It is recommended that students should beprovided with opportunities to use technology in their day-to-day life at school level. Moreover, it is suggested here that a comprehensive course on information literacy skills andtheir practical applications should be mandatory at secondary level.
