Exploring the Impact of Online Teaching Factors on International Students’ Control-Value Appraisals and Achievement Emotions in a Foreign Language Context

AbstractDrawing upon Pekrun’s (2006) control–value theory of achievement emotions, the present study explores the relations between online teaching factors (i.e., teachers’ information and communications technology (ICT) competence and provision of structure) and students’ control–value appraisals and achievement emotions (i.e., enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety) in an online foreign language learning context. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 international students and 6 teachers who were involved in a Chinese foreign language course delivered online during the coronavirus pandemic. Results from the thematic analysis showed that both students’ and teachers’ positive evaluations of teachers’ ICT competence and provision of structure were associated with students’ increased control beliefs and intrinsic value, but not necessarily with utility value. According to the participants, the two increased appraisals related to students’ greater enjoyment and reduced feelings of boredom and anxiety during the online language learning process. Findings are discussed in light of the role of online teaching factors in shaping students’ appraisals and emotional experiences in online environments, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.

A study of the impact of the new digital divide on the ICT competences of rural and urban secondary school teachers in China

Teachers' competence in information and communication technology (ICT) applications can lead to a deeper integration of technology into the curriculum and improve the quality of education. However, its application and distribution issues could result in resource inequality and social injustice. Based on the ICT competency framework for teachers, the study investigates the variables influencing teachers' ICT competency. A prediction model of teachers' ICT competency is built using empirical data from secondary school teachers in Hebei Province, China, both in urban and rural settings. The study results show that a new digital divide does exist between urban and rural teachers and that differences in digital environment and digital literacy reflecting the new digital divide have different degrees of impact on teachers' ICT competence. Age and subject also affect teachers' ICT competence. In the new era, we can start with knowledge acquisition, knowledge deepening and knowledge creation to improve teachers' ICT competence.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES AS A MEANS OF FORMING PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE OF STUDENTS OF PEDAGOGICAL PHILOLOGY

This article deals with information and communication technologies (ICT), their classification and characteristics, as the creation and development of information society implies their wide application in education. The article reveals the concepts of forming ICT competence of a teacher in the system of professional and pedagogical education. The material reflecting the forms, methods and techniques of ICT use contributing to the effectiveness of teaching Russian language and culture of speech is given.

Exploring pre-service teachers’ ICT competence beliefs

It is essential for pre-service teachers to hold positive beliefs about information and communication technology (ICT) and possess digital skills to integrate digital technology successfully into the teaching and learning environments. Although numerous studies have examined teachers’ attitudes toward ICT, little research has examined teachers’ ICT competency beliefs. This research aimed to explore pre-service teachers’ ICT competence beliefs.<b> </b>We used an instrument developed by previous researchers for data collection. The results showed that the pre-service teachers had good ICT competence beliefs. A few gender differences were found between participants’ mean scores on six dimensions of the data collection instrument. No gender differences were found for many items. It was found that there were no significant differences in the years of study of participants across five different grade levels. However, the lowest mean scores were found in analyzing and reflecting, problem-solving, and information and data literacy. Conversely, the highest mean scores were detected in communication and collaboration, digital content creation, and safety and security. Based on these findings, recommendations have been made for practice and future research.

The Influence of Gender and Training Sector on the ICT Competency of Pre-Service Teachers in Vietnam: Using the UNESCO ICT Competency Framework

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a powerful educational change and reform tool. Teachers are a direct subject in promoting the application of information technology (IT), and the ability to integrate technology into teaching affects the application of IT in teaching. Integrating ICT into education requires teachers to be competent in using ICT. In other words, teachers are required to have sufficient ICT competence to use ICT for education. Faced with this requirement, teacher training schools have made positive changes to improve the ICT capacity of pedagogy students and prepare graduates to perform their duties in the context of digital transformation in education today. This study collected information on pre-service teachers’ competency in using ICT as future teachers in Vietnam. Using the ICT competency framework of UNESCO, the research surveyed 1698 fourth year teaching students (pre-service teachers) from 10 provinces in 3 regions of Vietnam. The results indicate that although pre-service teachers in Vietnam are well educated on ICT policy issues in education, for the issue of ICT exploitation to support curriculum implementation and assessment, they still need ICT skills to support effective teaching and learning methods. In addition, there are significant differences in gender and training specialization in some aspects, such as the application of digital skills and the use of ICT in organization and administration. These results are the basis for in-depth research into establishing influencing factors and measures to improve the ICT application competency of pre-service teachers, contributing to ensuring the quality of education in Vietnam.

Understanding factors affecting fundamental school teachers’ use of technology in Luxembourg through a survey study

Over the last few decades, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have brought about significant disruptions across nearly every industry, including education. Acknowledging the power of the digital revolution to make a positive change, educational policy makers in Luxembourg have made efforts to translate these trends into policies leveraging the potential of technologies while also tackling the challenges they present. However, these efforts and their impact on teacher ICT integration behaviors in Luxembourg are rather underexplored. The aim of the study was to examine and understand factors associated with efficient educational technology practices. The study data were collected through an online survey of 159 teachers and analyzed through a mixed-method approach, including regression and correlation analyses. Findings shed light on the connections between professional use of ICT and a set of interrelated factors such as (a) teacher attitudes followed by (b) subjective norms, (c) teacher self-efficacy beliefs, (d) facilitating conditions, (e) teacher value beliefs, and (f) fundamental pedagogical beliefs. The study also revealed possible deterrents and challenges of ICT integration in Luxembourgish fundamental schools, including gaps between teacher ICT competencies and advanced ICT uses, class management issues, and developed suggestions for professional development training to ensure efficient and advanced ICT uses in the classroom.

Digital learning for preschools: Validation of basic ICT competence beliefs of preschool teachers in Hong Kong and the Philippines

AbstractWith technology integration efforts expanding to early childhood education globally, assessing preschool teachers’ technological competence beliefs is imperative. However, most existing tools measuring teachers’ information and communication technology (ICT) competence beliefs focused on primary through secondary grades. This study examined the factorial validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of the Basic ICT Competence Beliefs (BICB) questionnaire among 209 preschool teachers in Hong Kong and the Philippines. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the original nine-factor structure over plausible alternative models. All factors showed good reliability (α = 0.83 to 0.91) and theoretically meaningful factor intercorrelations. Multigroup CFA results supported the measurement invariance of the scale. Specifically, the results demonstrated the configural, metric, scalar, and strict invariance across cultural groups. Findings provide further validity for the BICB as a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing preschool teachers’ ICT competence beliefs within and across contexts. The BICB can help identify teacher strengths and needs, guide professional development, and evaluate technology integration efforts in early childhood education in Asia.

The Impact of ICT Adoption in Enhancing Teaching and Learning in Primary Schools of Amathole East District, Eastern Cape

This study examines how information and communication technology (ICT) impacts the schooling environment within the primary sector in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province's Amathole East District. ICT adoption in education can fully modify the ways that instruction and learning are given to students, but it also comes with obstacles, especially in the rural primary schools in the Amathole East District. This research intends to shed light on the current ICT status adoption of Amathole East District's primary schools. Three primary schools were chosen, and three research participants from each school were chosen using the purposive sample technique. Data were gathered through focus groups and in-person interviews. The acquired data were analyzed and presented using a thematic approach. It was revealed as the findings that while teachers were willing to embrace ICTs into teaching and learning and had a good attitude toward technology adoption, they needed the necessary ICT competencies. Furthermore, several challenges and barriers were identified, and these included inadequate ICT infrastructure, a shortage of teacher training in technology integration and a lack of access to ICT tools. The study concludes that teacher training programs be expanded, invest in infrastructure development, and develop a comprehensive ICT policy framework. Taking the research's findings into account, the research offers practical recommendations in enhancing ICT adoption, investing in infrastructure development, expanding teacher development opportunities, to formulating a comprehensive ICT strategy framework so that schools are ready to run virtually in the event of another pandemic related to COVID-19.

Evaluating ICT Competencies of Higher Education Faculty:A Comprehensive Quantitative Model after the Pandemic

This study aimed to enhance the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills of faculty members in a higher education institution. The faculty’s limited proficiency in ICT impeded the integration of technology instruments across different topics. A training program was devised, executed, and assessed to tackle these problems within six months. Online courses were developed for participants under the training’s criteria. Quantitative data collection involved administering a pre-test and post-test, which were subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics. The assessed competencies encompassed the utilization of computers in instructional activities and the development and implementation of educational initiatives. The findings indicated that 75% of the faculty did not typically include technology in their instructional methods, whereas 41% recognized the potential of technology to enhance and innovate teaching practices. Only 66.67% of the participants possessed knowledge of fundamental components of computers, while the same percentage was aware of basic peripherals. Additionally, 58.33% of the participants demonstrated proficiency in installing computer programs. The program sought to enhance the educational quality and showed positive modifications in formulating strategies for integrating ICTs into the curriculum. The results showcased the efficacy of the training program in improving teaching skills in the field of information and communication technologies (ICTs), enhancing the teaching methods of faculty members, and providing the opportunity to deliver courses either fully online or in a blended format.

Students’ Performance and ICT Capabilities in Quadratic Functions Using GeoGebra

The study explored the relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) self-efficacies and students’ mathematics performance using the GeoGebra software in teaching quadratic functions to senior high school (SHS) students in the West Gonja Municipality of the savannah region. ICT capabilities were defined as the functionalities offered by ICT in mathematics education that students identify and utilize to address their learning needs, including computational and graphing capabilities. The pre-test/post-test non-equivalent control group design with a quantitative research approach were employed for data collection. A sample of 120 participants were selected from three Senior High Schools in the West Gonja Municipality via the stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through performance tests and students survey questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test and correlation analysis. Notably, the study observed that there was comparable/significant difference between the posttest mean scores of students taught using GeoGebra and students taught without it. The results also indicated GeoGebra as an effective technological tool for improving students’ computational and graphing competencies, both of which revealed significant and positive association with mathematics performance. Analysis of the responses of students' opinions/perceptions of GeoGebra as an ICT tool in teaching quadratic functions revealed an overwhelming majority of students had positive perceptions of GeoGebra, considering it an effective tool for teaching and learning quadratic functions, enhancing their understanding, computational skills, and motivation. They also expressed willingness to recommend it to their peers, indicating strong support for its integration into mathematics education. As a result, the study proposed the full integration of ICT into the SHSs’ curriculum. Additionally, it recommended focusing on enhancing the ICT competencies of SHS students to effectively leverage ICT in their educational endeavors.

Assessment of Level of Digital Literacy among Science Teachers at the Junior Secondary Schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

The study assessed the level of digital literacy among science teachers at the Junior Secondary School in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive survey design with a structured questionnaire administered to 200 Basic Science and Mathematics teachers in Ibadan Metropolis. The result: 164 (82%) respondents had < 5 computers with digital tools, while 36 (18%) had > 5 computers with digital tools; science teachers possess basic digital literacy skills with the highest internet usage (=3.445 and SD = 0.573); and the lowest in basic repairs and maintenance of computers (= 1.375 and SD = 0.562). Total average in all items: = 2.961; and SD = 0.856. Science teachers’ utilisation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills was moderate (2.72), and the level of ICT competencies possessed by science teachers was high (= 3.137). These findings underscore the need for equitable distribution of ICT facilities, coupled with a call for continuous professional development programmes among science educators to ensure adept utilisation of these resources.

Flipped Learning Model as a Solution for Implementing Islamic Religious Education (PAI) Learning in The 21st Century

The purpose of this research is to describe the design of flipped learning and its implementation as a form of technology-based learning to improve the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) abilities or competencies of teachers or educators, especially religious teachers both in schools and madrasas. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive analysis method with data collection techniques related to learning model design flipped learning which has been widely applied. Meanwhile, the results obtained show that the learning model design flipped learning can increase student involvement in the learning process optimally, as well as making the time for delivering material more efficient. However, various obstacles are still found, such as limited information and communication technology tools, and the most hindering thing is the lack of ICT competence for teachers. The conclusion of this research is that the flipped learning model design is quite effective and efficient in increasing the activity and role of students compared to conventional learning methods

Teacher’s Challenge in 21st Century: Physics and Science Teachers’ ICT Competencies in Learning Process

This study aims to determine the competence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) of science and physics teachers in Aceh Tamiang District in the learning process. The survey method was used in this study and data to measure teachers' ICT competencies were obtained with a questionnaire instrument. The questionnaire were developed from ICT competences indicators as many as 19 items. The respondents were 40 science and physics teachers in Aceh Tamiang. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis and correlation test. Based on the perceptions obtained from the research questionnaire data, the teachers' ICT competence is very high category. In terms of employment status, the average ICT competence of non-civil servant teachers is higher than civil servant teachers. Likewise, from the review of tenure, teachers who have <5 years of service have higher ICT competencies compared to teachers who have 6-15 years and >15 years of service. The correlation test results obtained a weak relationship between employment status and tenure of science and physics teachers in Aceh Tamiang on ICT competence. These results can be a concern for civil servant teachers and teachers who have a longer tenure can further improve ICT competencies in learning to produce quality graduates

Perceived ICT Competencies of Female Student Teachers In Relation to Selected Variables

The present study intends to determine the perceived level of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competencies of female student teachers enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) teacher education programme at six private colleges of education in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu State, India. A convenient sample of 301 female student teachers participated in this study. The researchers used the “Information and Communication Technology Competency Scale (ICTCS)” developed based on existing literature to collect data from female student teachers. The data were collected using a Google form and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that female student teachers had competency in most ICT parameters. The study identified several significant factors that influenced the ICT competencies of female student teachers, including locality of residence, education level, possession of a personal computer or laptop, completion of a computer training course, and the number of years of computer usage. However, the major subject of female student teachers did not affect their level of ICT competencies. Policymakers and teacher educators can use these findings to design targeted interventions to enhance the ICT competencies among student teachers in teacher education programmes.

Examination of the relationship between information and communication technology competencies and communication skills

This study aimed to explore the impact of different dimensions of communication skills, namely competence (COMP), self-esteem (SELF), social communication challenge (SCC), and listening-speaking (LI-S) on the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) for student support (SS) and instructional design (ID). This study implemented inferential statistical methods to explore the impact of different dimensions of communication skills on the utilization of ICT among pre-service teachers. A sample of 324 pre-service teachers from Kazan Federal University was examined, utilizing validated scales adapted to the Russian context, with data analyzed using structural equation modeling to identify complex relationships between variables and to ascertain potential differences according to gender and department. The results demonstrated a significant positive relationship between participants’ perceived COMP in communication skills and their information and communication technology competencies (ICTCs), both in SS and ID. This suggests the need for targeted training to enhance educators’ communication competencies for optimal ICT utilization. Conversely, SELF and LI-S communication skills did not significantly influence ICTCs, indicating that these elements do not necessarily result in more effective ICT use in educational contexts. However, handling SCCs was positively associated with ICTCs in ID but not for SS, indicating a nuanced relationship between different communication skills and areas of ICT utilization. The study findings provide implications for professional development programs and underline the importance of certain dimensions of communication skills in leveraging ICT in education. Further research is recommended to verify these findings across different populations and educational settings.

Psychometric properties of information and communication technology competencies scale: Latent profile analysis

Rapid expansion of information and communication technologies (ICT) underscores importance of ICT competency for success in modern society. In education, ICT facilitates knowledge acquisition, innovative teaching methods, and development of digital literacy skills. By measuring ICT competencies, teacher training programs can better equip educators for technology integration, leading to more effective teaching and learning processes. It is crucial for educational policies to emphasize integration of ICT and ensure teachers are prepared to utilize it effectively. The study aims to determine psychometric properties of “information and communication technology competency scale (ICTCS)” for pre-service teachers (PSTs) in the Russian setting and identify distinct proficiency levels among them. This study employed a mixed-methods approach to adapt a scale measuring PSTs’ ICT competencies. The research involved two different samples for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n=160) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n=326). To establish language validity, a translation, and cross-cultural adaptation process was followed. Data analysis included EFA, CFA, reliability estimation, and latent profile analysis, with satisfactory results obtained for scale’s psychometric properties. The study concludes that ICTCS, with two factors (ICTC-PU and ICTC-ID), is a valid and reliable measure of teachers’ attitudes and skills regarding ICT use. Four-class latent profile model reveals distinct competence levels, informing targeted professional development programs. Educational institutions and policymakers should prioritize these programs and use the scale for teacher evaluations. Future research should explore the efficacy of these programs, expand the sample size, incorporate objective measures, and employ longitudinal designs to better understand the impact on student outcomes.

YouTube as an open resource for foreign language learning: a case study of German

The integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education has increased the possibilities and expanded the boundaries of the learning process. It is also a prerequisite for implementing distance learning. Various online resources, such as e-mail, blogs, forums, online applications, and video hosting sites, can be used to create open learning and education environments. This study focuses on the use of informational educational technologies for learning foreign languages, especially German. The article presents the results of a theoretical analysis of the content of YouTube video materials in terms of their personal and didactic relevance for teaching German as a first or second foreign language in higher education, specifically at a pedagogical university. Based on the practical experience of using several popular thematic YouTube channels with a large and stable audience, a brief didactic analysis of their products is provided and suggestions are made on how to transform video content into methodological material for the practical course of German language for future teachers. The article also explores the potential of using alternative YouTube resources for distance learning with regard to the development of mediation skills as defined by the authors of the CEFR Companion Volume with New Descriptors. Four types of resources that can serve as teaching materials are identified and analyzed; some examples of their preparation and use for the training of future foreign language teachers are given. The article also discusses the open resources ONCOO and TWINE, which can be used to foster the autonomy of future foreign language teachers, and describes their features. The proposed recommendations can help to achieve the following objectives: enriching vocabulary; semanticizing phraseological units, fixed expressions, clichés; developing pronunciation skills; enhancing linguistic and ICT competencies; improving listening and speaking skills; increasing motivation to learn, etc.

Breaking Textbook Barriers: PowToon Videos in Engaging ICT Learning for Young EFL Learners

The significant interest in the development and integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of education is still marked with an unequal level of performance in many areas. This research explores the researcher-teacher collaboration of creating and using PowToon video in teaching English to achieve the mission of elevating the ICT competence of teachers and students in schools, especially in areas that are underdeveloped or far from the central government. The participants of the study include the sole English teacher of SD Kartika VI-7 Malang and twenty students in the fifth grade. Through four steps (analysing, designing, implementing, evaluating), this descriptive qualitative study collected data from classroom observation, teacher interview, expert analysis of the developed media, and short evaluation questionnaire. Results from the analysis stage confirmed the preliminary results of the English class’s minimal ICT usage. The design stage is where the researchers and the teacher worked together to adapt the textbook materials into interesting PowToon video for the students. The implementation stage is where the teacher used the video validated by three experts of material, media, and language. Finally, the media’s effectiveness is evaluated based on the questionnaire responses given by the students. The research concludes that the validation process of the PowToon ascertained its quality for effective English instruction to motivate student engagement. Although neither PowToon video nor its implementation is particularly new, they are novel, effective, and—arguably most importantly—friendly teaching media for classrooms that have yet to adapt with the rapid technological world.

Development and validation of EDU-COV-NEE-NEAE questionnaire to measure educational response, ICT usage and impact of COVID-19 pandemic on students with special educational needs

The COVID-19 pandemic forced changes in the educational response, which involved the intensive use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills, among other interventions. The circumstances required both families and teachers to make an extra effort to adapt to a reality that was expected to last for a long time. These changes had a special impact on students with Specific Needs of Educational Support (SNES) and Special Educational Needs (SEN). This study aimed to design and validate a questionnaire to assess the impact of the online training model used during the pandemic on teachers of students with SNES and SEN. We used qualitative, exploratory, and confirmatory factor analyses. The final 16-item scale was composed of three factors. Factor1, was labeled as “Educational Response.“, factor2 was labeled “ICT Usage and Online Teaching,” and Factor 3 was labeled “Impact.” The questionnaire demonstrated good validity and reliability. This short questionnaire is recommended for assessing or monitoring the impact of changes in educational interventions involving ICT competencies due to COVID-19. However, they can also be easily adapted to similar circumstances or educational settings.

Evaluation of pre-service teachers’ digital skills and ICT competencies in context of the demands of the 21st century

21st century has seen the emergence of digital skills as a crucial ability with profound effects on employment, education, and social relationships, among other facets of life. The best talents to teach are the subject of study by those who establish educational policies. The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between information and communication technology competency (ICTC) and digital abilities. It focuses on which of the digital skills sub-dimensions has a greater impact on ICTC and how this impact varies by country, age, and gender. This study employed a quantitative research design to evaluate the association between ICTC and various digital skills. The sample group consisted of 620 university students from Russia and Kazakhstan. Digital skills were measured using a scale adapted for the Russian context, while ICTC scale was first adapted for the Russian context following language validity steps. The study also conducted path analysis to determine the impact of ICTC on digital skill dimensions and multigroup path analysis to assess effects according to different independent variables. The study found that certain dimensions of digital skills, specifically “use of digital tools”, “communication of digital content”, and “creation of digital content”, significantly influence ICTC. However, “management of digital content”, “digital security”, and “digital empathy” dimensions did not show a significant effect. The impact of these dimensions varied significantly across different demographic groups, suggesting that digital skills and ICTC development may differ among these groups. The findings highlight the need for tailored strategies to develop and promote digital skills and ICTC, considering these demographic differences.
