Grassland vegetation height affects bird responses to forest edges in Mediterranean open farmland

Afforestation affects Mediterranean farmland biodiversity due to loss and fragmentation of grassland habitats. While the influence of landscape context and plantation edges on farmland bird responses to afforestation is well-documented, less is known about the influence of grassland vegetation height and how it interacts with afforestation to influence bird communities. Here, we examined how changes in grassland vegetation height affect bird responses to afforestation in a farmland region in southern Portugal, and how these are affected by plantation type and edge. This region has experienced afforestation with eucalyptus, pine and oak stands, agricultural intensification, and frequent dry periods. To capture local and landscape-level changes, we collected data in two periods (2005 and 2014–15). Grassland vegetation height varied between sampling periods, emerging as a key factor affecting changes observed. Ground-nesting and cereal-associated species increased in abundance with taller vegetation in 2014–15, while in 2005, with drier weather and shorter vegetation, the species associated with ploughed fields were more abundant. Vegetation height effects on bird assemblages depended on plantation type and distance to plantation edges. Farmland bird abundance, including ground-nesting and cereal crops-associated species, increased with taller vegetation, particularly near oak and pine plantations. Conversely, species associated with ploughed fields declined with taller vegetation, especially near eucalyptus plantations. Results highlight complex interactions between vegetation height, plantation type, and edge proximity shaping avian assemblages. This study supports the importance of field and landscape-level management with special focus on grassland vegetation height and landscape heterogeneity for preserving open-farmland birds in fast-changing Mediterranean farmland landscapes.

Industrial forestry negatively affects small-farms honey production in south-central Chile: evidence from a landscape scale

Land use and cover change have a high influence on bee species, where honey bees (Apis mellifera) could be affected in terms of resources, dispersal, and habitat. However, the influence of landscape context on honey productivity has been scarcely explored in comparison with population parameters, which is an essential topic for the economic development of rural communities based on apiculture. Here, we tested the hypothesis if honey production decreases with the increase of exotic forest plantations in the landscape as the cover of native forest decreases, vegetation and soils become increasingly degraded. We compiled data on honey productivity for two years (2018 and 2019) of small-scale honey production in 17 landscapes of 1 km radii (Curanilahue state in south-central Chile). Then, the landscapes were characterized by using remote sensing techniques, including biophysical and compositional landscape variables. Finally, Generalized Linear Mixed Models were implemented to explore the relationship between landscape variables and honey productivity. We identified a positive relationship between honey productivity with built cover and grassland cover. On the other hand, a negative relationship was found between honey production and net primary production, exotic forest plantations, and tree senescence index. Our results provide new insights into the landscape-scale drivers of hive productivity in rural landscapes of south-central Chile.

Adjacent crop type impacts potential pollinator communities and their pollination services in remnants of natural vegetation

AbstractAimPollination plays a crucial role in the conservation of many plant species persisting in fragmented, human‐dominated landscapes. Pollinators are known to be instrumental in maintaining genetic diversity and metapopulation dynamics for many plant species and are important for providing ecological services that are essential in agricultural landscapes where populations of native plants are highly isolated. Numerous studies have explored the value of remnant native vegetation for supporting pollination services to crop species, yet the effect of mass‐flowering crops on the pollinator communities and the pollination services they provide to native plant communities persisting in fragmented landscapes are less well understood. Here, we assess the influence of the presence and phenology of a mass‐flowering crop to pollinator community structure, abundance, and pollen load composition in remnant vegetation in complex agricultural landscapes.LocationSouth‐west Western Australia, Australia.MethodsWe recorded the composition and abundance of insect flower visitors and their pollen loads in isolated remnants of York Gum‐Jam woodlands adjacent to canola (insect‐attracting) or wheat (non‐insect‐attracting) fields over two years.ResultsAll bees were much more sensitive to adjacent crop type (neighbouring canola or wheat) than non‐bee pollinators. Honeybees were the most abundant pollinators in canola fields during peak flowering. Honeybee abundance increased in canola‐adjacent reserves post canola bloom, potentially indicating a movement into reserves as crop flowering waned. Native bees were the most diverse in remnant vegetation. Pollen loads of native bees were more mixed (increased pollen richness and evenness) when sampled next to canola fields compared to wheat fields.Main conclusionThe availability of potential insect pollinators to remnant wildflower communities in agricultural landscapes is context dependent. Whether sampled communities were adjacent to wheat or canola in a landscape significantly impacted the abundance of potential pollinators in certain landscape elements, but not others, and the composition of pollen loads carried by these insects. Results offer novel insights about the influence of landscape context on pollinator communities and the potential pollination services available for the conservation of native plant species in highly fragmented agricultural landscapes.

The influence of landscape context on the production of cultural ecosystem services

ContextRecent efforts to apply sustainability concepts to entire landscapes have seen increasing interest in approaches that connect socioeconomic and biophysical systems. Evaluating these connections through a cultural ecosystem services lens clarifies how different spatiotemporal scales and levels of organisation influence the production of cultural benefits. Currently, however, the effects of multi-level and multi-scale ecological variation on the production of cultural benefits have not yet been disentangled.ObjectivesTo quantify the amount of variation in cultural ecosystem service provision by birds to birders that is due to landscape-level attributes.MethodsWe used data from 293 birding routes and 101 different birders in South African National Parks to explore the general relationships between birder responses to bird species and environmental conditions, bird-related observations, the biophysical attributes of the landscape and their effect on bird-related cultural benefits.ResultsBiophysical attributes (particularly biome, vegetation type, and variance in elevation) significantly increased the percentage of variance explained in birder benefits from 57 to 65%, demonstrating that birder benefits are derived from multi-level (birds to ecosystems) and multi-scale (site to landscape) social and ecological interactions.ConclusionsLandscape attributes influence people’s perceptions of cultural ecosystem service provision by individual species. Recognition of the complex, localised and inextricable linkage of cultural ecosystem services to biophysical attributes can improve our understanding of the landscape characteristics that affect the supply and demand of cultural ecosystem services.

Response of an arboreal species to plantation harvest

Plantation forests are increasing worldwide and generally have lower biodiversity value than surrounding native vegetation. However, when established on previously cleared land, they can provide important habitat for some wildlife species and have positive conservation outcomes. In southern Australia, the establishment of southern blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) plantations on cleared land has expanded the area of koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) habitat; however, koalas are at risk of injury, death and displacement when plantations are harvested. Consequently, an understanding of the response of koalas to harvesting is vital for developing management strategies that allow for plantation harvest while also improving welfare outcomes for koalas. We used GPS tracking and a before-after-control-impact (BACI) design to investigate the impact of blue gum plantation harvest on koala survival, body mass, reproduction, and movements. A total of 44 koalas (17 males, 27 females) from two plantations (one harvested, one unharvested) were monitored for 8 months encompassing before (5 weeks), during (11.5 weeks) and after (15.5 weeks) harvest. Survival was high with only two koalas (harvested plantation) dying of unknown causes but neither considered to be a direct result of harvesting. Harvesting did not have any detectable impact on body mass and pouch young production and only a minor effect on the amount of time koalas spent moving. By the end of the study period, 79% of the koalas originally living in the harvested plantation had moved to the surrounding plantations, while the remainder stayed within the harvested area in unharvested trees. In the unharvested plantation, 18% moved out and 82% remained. We attribute the high survival during harvest to active searching by koala ‘spotters’ ahead of harvesting machinery and subsequent retention of each koala’s tree and the surrounding eight trees. We suggest that the proximity of the harvested plantation to adjacent plantations facilitated safe dispersal of koalas out of the plantation, increasing the probability of survival and reducing the energy and movement distances. Our findings suggest that the plantation harvesting can result in minimal impact on resident koalas but that the influence of landscape context around harvested plantations should be the subject of future research.

Effects of landscape context on mammal richness in the urban forest mosaic of EThekwini Municipality, Durban, South Africa

The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats is a major threat to biodiversity globally. In fragmented landscapes, species are not only affected by patch-level attributes but also by the influence of the whole mosaic of landscape elements surrounding habitat patches. Therefore, it is important to understand the simultaneous effects of local and landscape-level attributes on biodiversity. In this study, we determined the influence of landscape context on species richness of forest mammals in an urban-forest mosaic of the EThekwini Municipality Area, Durban, South Africa. We determined presence/absence of mammals in 28 patches using remote-triggered camera traps over two sampling periods. We applied generalised linear modelling within an information-theoretic framework to quantify the effects of within-patch, isolation, matrix, and landscape level attributes on species richness. The results showed the importance of landscape context for occurrence patterns of mammals in fragmented landscapes. In particular, they showed that patch size, shape complexity, habitat amount in the immediate environment, habitat proximity and road density were the most important factors influencing mammalian richness patterns. Overall, the results stressed the importance of habitat area (patch size, habitat amount in the immediate environment, and habitat proximity) and its spatial configuration to faunal preservation and suggest that management efforts in this landscape should be aimed at protecting fragments from further loss and disturbance and matrix improvement to increase landscape connectivity.

The influence of landscape context on short‐ and long‐term forest change following a severe ice storm

Abstract When deforestation results in small forest fragments surrounded by a non‐forest matrix, forest stands within these fragments experience changes in structure and community composition. They also continue to experience natural disturbances like hurricanes and ice storms. It remains unclear whether the landscape context of forest stands influences plant community response to natural disturbances. Using data from surveys of forested plots in the years immediately following and 19 years after a severe ice storm, we measured changes in woody stem density, species richness and beta diversity. Plots with greater storm damage had greater gains in stems and species, and greater shifts in community composition. In addition, there were interactions between the degree of storm damage and landscape context. The short‐term effects of storm damage were magnified in plots with less forest on the surrounding landscape and farther from the forest edge. In plots with high damage, a return towards pre‐storm conditions over the long‐term occurred more often in plots farther from the forest edge compared to those close to the edge. Synthesis. Future climate scenarios predict increases in severe weather and accompanying ecosystem disturbance. Our results show that it is important to consider landscape context when assessing the response of forest communities to such disturbances.

Landscape context matters for attractiveness and effective use of road underpasses by bats

The worldwide expansion of road networks is a major concern in biological conservation because of its predominantly negative effects on terrestrial fauna. Roads also affect bats, acting as barriers to movements and causing direct mortality by collisions with vehicles. Among wildlife crossing structures existing to maintain landscape connectivity, road underpasses are considered as one of the most effective conservation measure for bats. While a few studies assessed the effects of underpass attributes on bat use, none to date has assessed the impact of landscape context on underpass use and attractiveness. To address this knowledge gap, we monitored bat activity during three consecutive nights around 24 underpasses selected along a gradient of forest cover. We compared bat activity below and above underpasses (i.e., underpass use), at road sections with and without underpasses and at habitats adjacent to roads (i.e., underpass attractiveness). We found a significant positive effect of forest cover on both underpass use and attractiveness for Myotis spp. and Barbastella barbastellus, and significant negative effects of distance to the nearest forest patch for Rhinolophus spp. and hedgerow length for Myotis spp. Our study highlights the key influence of landscape context on road underpass efficiency to maintain landscape connectivity for bats. We advocate for incorporating a landscape-scale approach in the decision-making process of underpass location during road project planning to enhance efficiency of such costly crossing structures.

Low maize pollen collection and low pesticide risk to honey bees in heterogeneous agricultural landscapes

Honey bees foraging on and around maize may be exposed to a number of pesticides, including neonicotinoids, but this exposure has not been well quantified in heterogeneous landscapes. Such landscapes may provide alternative foraging resources that add to or buffer pesticide risk. We assessed the influence of landscape context and maize pollen collection on pesticide levels during maize flowering. We quantified pesticides in (1) bee bread from 49 hives across New York and (2) pollen trapped weekly in one yard. Landscape composition and percent maize pollen were not related to pesticide levels. Furthermore, pesticide risk was low (< 1% contact LD50) in all but one of the pollen samples, and maize pollen was absent in the majority of samples. Our results suggest that hives near maize fields during maize flowering are not necessarily exposed to high levels of neonicotinoids and other pesticides in pollen, especially if uncontaminated pollen sources exist nearby.

Landscape context and plot features influence the epidemics of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) in southwest Ethiopia

From 2013 to 2015, a study was conducted on 29 coffee plots to assess the influence of landscape context and plot features on the epidemics of coffee leaf rust (CLR) descriptors in Gumay and Setema districts, Southwest Ethiopia. Maximum CLR severity and number of sporulating lesion density per leaf was significantly correlated with different land use types (tree density at 100 m, 200 m, pasture and crop lands at 200 m circular radius), and plot features (altitude, North-South aspect, East-West aspect and leaf area index) over different years of observation. High tree density in the surrounding coffee plots significantly increased the severity of the disease. There was a general decreasing trend of CLR severity, sporulating lesion density and proportion of leaf fall over the altitudinal gradient. The interaction of landscape context with CLR descriptors found were so complex and need further detail analysis.

Influence of landscape context on the abundance of native bee pollinators in tomato crops in Central Brazil

Evidence shows that pollinator abundance has declined and, consequently, so has their services, which has possible negative impacts on ecosystem functioning. The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of landscape context at multiple spatial scales on the abundance of bee pollinators of tomato crops in Brazil. Pollinator abundance was obtained from tomato crops grown in a conventional system in the Cerrado region. Around each tomato field circular buffers of 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 km radius were defined. Inside each buffer the landscapes were manually classified into native and non-native cover and, the proportion of native vegetation, the relative largest patch size, and the distance of the nearest native vegetation to each field were calculated. Pollinator species were categorized into five groups: Exomalopsis, Centris, Bombus/Eulaema, Halictidae, and all buzz pollinators combined (Buzzers). The results showed that the landscape context influenced the abundance of the five groups of tomato pollinators. Bees with a smaller body size, such as Exomalopsis spp., responded at smaller scales, while bees with a larger body size, such as the Centris and Bombus/Eulaema groups, responded at larger scales. The abundance of all pollinator groups increased with native vegetation cover. Most groups showed higher abundances in landscapes with similar-size fragments. The results reinforce the recommendation for maintaining natural habitats around crop areas, even if fragmented, for the conservation of the tomato pollinator assemblage. These findings are valuable for planning landscape management in the studied area to improve bee conservation, ecosystem services, and food production.

Spatial dynamics of coastal forest bird assemblages: the influence of landscape context, forest type, and structural connectivity

Context Complex structural connectivity patterns can influence the distribution of animals in coastal landscapes, particularly those with relatively large home ranges, such as birds. To understand the nuanced nature of coastal forest avifauna, where there may be considerable overlap in assemblages of adjacent forest types, the concerted influence of regional landscape context and vegetative structural connectivity at multiple spatial scales warrants investigation.

Fire severity and fire‐induced landscape heterogeneity affect arboreal mammals in fire‐prone forests

In fire‐prone regions, wildfire influences spatial and temporal patterns of landscape heterogeneity. The likely impacts of climate change on the frequency and intensity of wildfire highlights the importance of understanding how fire‐induced heterogeneity may affect different components of the biota. Here, we examine the influence of wildfire, as an agent of landscape heterogeneity, on the distribution of arboreal mammals in fire‐prone forests in south‐eastern Australia. First, we used a stratified design to examine the role of topography, and the relative influence of fire severity and fire history, on the occurrence of arboreal mammals 2–3 years after wildfire. Second, we investigated the influence of landscape context on the occurrence of arboreal mammals at severely burnt sites. Forested gullies supported a higher abundance of arboreal mammals than slopes. Fire severity was the strongest influence, with abundance lower at severely burnt than unburnt sites. The occurrence of mammals at severely burned sites was influenced by landscape context: abundance increased with increasing amount of unburnt and understorey‐only burnt forest within a 1 km radius. These results support the hypothesis that unburnt forest and moist gullies can serve as refuges for fauna in the post‐fire environment and assist recolonization of severely burned forest. They highlight the importance of spatial heterogeneity created by wildfire and the need to incorporate spatial aspects of fire regimes (e.g., creation and protection of refuges) for fire management in fire‐prone landscapes.

Dynamic Movement Patterns of Florida Gar within a Fluctuating Hydroscape

Fish with perennial life histories that inhabit ecosystems where water availability fluctuates seasonally must have movement behavior that accommodates this environmental change. Landscape structure is expected to influence magnitude and direction of these movements by affecting the distribution of water in space and time. Predicting the effects of climate change and restoring historical hydrology in the Florida Everglades, a large wetland that undergoes regular contraction in ecosystem size during seasonal droughts, requires information on how fish movement is affected by spatiotemporal patterns of water availability. We used radio telemetry to quantify spatial scale and direction of displacement of Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhinchus) from focal areas of the Everglades that differ in their seasonal hydrology and position relative to drought refuges. Displacement distances increased during both rising and dropping water levels compared to periods of stable water depth, but increased more and in more directed fashion when ecosystem size was contracting. The initial position of fish relative to natural (i.e., creeks and sloughs) and artificial (i.e., canals) refuge habitats directed dry-season movement and influenced displacement distances by attracting individuals from long distances and reducing inclination of nearby fish to disperse. During rising water, displacement distances overlapped between locations near and far from dry-season refuges because of increased displacement from crowded refuge habitats and decreased movement distances at short-hydroperiod marshes. Florida Gar display flexible movement strategies that accommodate the influence of landscape context on hydrology and distance to drought refuges. Modification of the canal-levee network, managed water releases, and climate change in the Florida Everglades will interact with seasonal displacement of this abundant predator in shaping its population dynamics and food web impacts during and after drought disturbances.

Landscape context influences the abundance of amphibians and the strength of their food web interactions in small ponds

Many species, including most amphibians, undergo an ontogenetic niche shift (ONS) from an aquatic larval stage to a terrestrial adult stage. We use the ratio of aquatic to terrestrial habitat in a landscape as a tool to understand the influence of landscape context on the population growth of ONS species. The aquatic to terrestrial ratio (ATR) of habitats can be viewed as an analog to the influence of resource ratios on the population growth of consumers and depends on the degree to which each habitat type limits the growth of a given population. Population growth rates of shorter‐lived species tend to be more limited by demographic rates in early (aquatic) life stages. As a result, increasing the ATR should lead to a higher total population size in the landscape (and higher densities in the terrestrial habitat), but have little influence on the density of individuals in any given aquatic habitat. Alternatively, population growth rates of longer‐lived species tend to be more limited by demographic rates in later (terrestrial) life stages and increasing the ATR should have little influence on the total population size in the landscape, but decrease the density of individuals in any given aquatic habitat. We show that among‐landscape variation in the breeding‐pond densities of three widespread amphibians with contrasting life histories is consistent with this framework. Within‐pond densities of Pseudacris crucifer, a species with short‐lived adults, were not influenced by ATR, whereas within‐pond densities of Hyla versicolor, a longer‐lived member of the same family (Hylidae), declined as ATR increased. Ambystoma maculatum, a long‐lived salamander, also had lower densities in ponds with higher ATR. Because A. maculatum larvae are important predators in ponds, we use structural equation modeling to show that landscape context (ATR) can moderate community structure via direct (amphibian abundances) and indirect (prey species richness) effects.

Decrease of plant alpha and beta-diversity with management intensity in vineyards and the influence of landscape context

Diversity of plants in agricultural landscapes is decreasing continually until today and this has cascading effects on ecosystem services and persistence of rare plants. Plant diversity, however, is not equally distributed among different habitat types. On a larger scale differences among habitats can contribute strongly to the global diversity of an agro-ecosystem. Landscape context and intensity of agriculture can also have effects on diversity. In this work, we present a thorough analysis of  -diversity in Mediterranean vineyard ecosystems, showing the effect of geology based landscape units for the outcome of  -diversity as well as management intensity for  -diversity of threatened plants. The change in  -diversity according to landscape context emphasizes the importance of landscape heterogeneity and vineyard habitats for local plant diversity. Low intensity agriculture was identified to maintain the highest levels of plant  -and  -diversity and to promote persistence of rare plants.

The effects of landscape fragmentation on pollination dynamics: absence of evidence not evidence of absence

Animal-mediated pollination is essential for both ecosystem services and conservation of global biodiversity, but a growing body of work reveals that it is negatively affected by anthropogenic disturbance. Landscape-scale disturbance results in two often inter-related processes: (1) habitat loss, (2) disruptions of habitat configuration (i.e. fragmentation). Understanding the relative effects of such processes is critical in designing effective management strategies to limit pollination and pollinator decline. We reviewed existing published work from 1989 to 2009 and found that only six of 303 studies considering the influence of landscape context on pollination separated the effects of habitat loss from fragmentation. We provide a synthesis of the current landscape, behavioural, and pollination ecology literature in order to present preliminary multiple working hypotheses explaining how these two landscape processes might independently influence pollination dynamics. Landscape disturbance primarily influences three components of pollination interactions: pollinator density, movement, and plant demography. We argue that effects of habitat loss on each of these components are likely to differ substantially from the effects of fragmentation, which is likely to be more complex and may influence each pollination component in contrasting ways. The interdependency between plants and animals inherent to pollination systems also has the possibility to drive cumulative effects of fragmentation, initiating negative feedback loops between animals and the plants they pollinate. Alternatively, due to their asymmetrical structure, pollination networks may be relatively robust to fragmentation. Despite the potential importance of independent effects of habitat fragmentation, its effects on pollination remain largely untested. We postulate that variation across studies in the effects of 'fragmentation' owes much to artifacts of the sampling regimes adopted, particularly (1) incorrectly separating fragmentation from habitat loss, and (2) mis-matches in spatial scale between landscapes studied and the ecological processes of interest. The field of landscape pollination ecology could be greatly advanced through the consideration and quantification of the matrix, landscape functional connectivity, and pollinator movement behaviour in response to these elements. Studies designed to disentangle the independent effects of habitat loss and fragmentation are essential for gaining insight into landscape-mediated pollination declines, implementing effective conservation measures, and optimizing ecosystem services in complex landscapes.

The influence of landscape context on the distribution of flightless mammals in exurban developments

Broad-acre subdivisions constitute an increasing form of residential development known as exurbia. Despite significant impacts on biodiversity, exurbia is critically understudied in Australia. Exurban developments are distributed non-uniformly around city margins and are typically clustered adjacent to desirable landscape elements, such as forests and water. Forested peninsulas are thus popular sites for exurban development. Developments on these relatively insular regions have the potential to reduce local populations of species with limited dispersal capabilities and an aversion to exurbia. Two exurban regions of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, one a peninsula and one inland, were surveyed for flightless mammals using spotlight observations and a survey of landowners. The frequencies of mammals within exurbia were compared with their frequencies in wildlands and tested against life history traits. Within the exurbanised peninsula, there were disproportionately fewer individuals of species with large home range sizes. Overall, two very fecund species, including a threatened native bandicoot, Perameles gunnii, were more frequent in exurbia than in wildlands. We cannot conclude that any of female body mass, female home range size and fecundity can provide consistently strong predictions of the likelihood of negative or positive effects of urbanisation, but we can conclude that each of these variables can be predictive within particular regional and faunal contexts. We suggest that, until further information is gained, planners could use fecundity as a predictor of mammal survival in exurbia, except where the exurban area is isolated from other areas that contain native vegetation, in which case, female home range negatively predicts survival.

Historical processes and landscape context influence genetic structure in peripheral populations of the collared lizard (Crotaphytus collaris)

Populations at the periphery of a species' range often show reduced genetic variability within populations and increased genetic divergence among populations compared to those at the core, but the mechanisms that give rise to this core-periphery pattern in genetic structure can be multifaceted. Peripheral population characteristics may be a product of historical processes, such as founder effects or population expansion, or due to the contemporary influence of landscape context on gene flow. We sampled collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris) at four locations within the northern Flint Hills of Kansas, which is at the northern periphery of their range, to determine the genetic variability and extent of genetic divergence among populations for ten microsatellite loci (n = 229). We found low genetic variability (average allelic richness = 3.37 ± 0.23 SE; average heterozygosity = 0.54 ± 0.05 SE) and moderate pop- ulation divergence (average FST = 0.08 ± 0.01 SE) among our sample sites relative to estimates reported in the literature at the core of the species' range in Texas. We also identified differences in dispersal rates among sampling locations. Gene flow within the Flint Hills was thus greater than for other peripheral populations of collared lizards, such as the Missouri glade system where most of the mesic grasslands have been converted to forest since the last glacial retreat, which appears to have greatly impeded gene flow among populations. Our findings signify the importance of considering landscape context when evaluating core- peripheral trends in genetic diversity and population structure.

Influence of landscape context on the abundance and diversity of bees in Mediterranean olive groves

The diversity and abundance of wild bees ensures the delivery of pollination services and the maintenance of ecosystem diversity. As previous studies carried out in Central Europe and the US have shown, bee diversity and abundance is influenced by the structure and the composition of the surrounding landscape. Comparable studies have so far not been carried out in the Mediterranean region. The present study examines the influence of Mediterranean landscape context on the diversity and abundance of wild bees. To do this, we sampled bees in 13 sites in olive groves on Lesvos Island, Greece. Bees were assigned to five categories consisting of three body size groups (small, medium and large bees), the single most abundant bee species (Lasioglossum marginatum) and all species combined. The influence of the landscape context on bee abundance and species richness was assessed at five radii (250, 500, 750, 1000 and 1250 m) from the centre of each site. We found that the abundance within bee groups was influenced differently by different landscape parameters and land covers, whereas species richness was unaffected. Generally, smaller bees' abundance was impacted by landscape parameters at smaller scales and larger bees at larger scales. The land cover that influenced bee abundance positively was olive grove, while phrygana, conifer forest, broad-leaved forest, cultivated land, rock, urban areas and sea had mostly negative or no impact. We stress the need for a holistic approach, including all land covers, when assessing the effects of landscape context on bee diversity and abundance in the Mediterranean.
