Influence of inorganic fertilizers with biofertilizers on biochemical components, growth and yield of garlic under subtropical irrigated condition

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an economically important vegetable crop which is used worldwide for culinary and medicinal purposes. The extensive use of inorganic fertilizers poses serious collateral problems such as environmental pollution, pest resistance development and food safety decline. Thus present study was conducted to investigate the effects of various application rate of inorganic fertilizers (100% NPK, 75% NPK and 50% NPK) and biofertilizers (consortium I and consortium II) on garlic yield and soil health. Results revealed that supplementation of 75% NPK along with biofertilizers gave the higher yield, biochemical components and soil parameters than 100% NPK application. Moreover, nutrient contents (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) of garlic leaves and bulbs increased by combined inoculation of different combinations of NPK along with biofertilizers. Integrated application of inorganic fertilizers along with biofertilizers improved soil’s physico-chemical (pH and organic carbon) and biological (dehydrogenase activity) properties. Therefore, it can be concluded that integrated utilization of these biofertilizers along with 75% NPK improves soil health and it also offers the scope of reducing the application of inorganic fertilizers to garlic crop by 25% without any loss in bulb yield.

Vermicompost Leachate a Viable Bio-stimulant for Tomato Growth and Yield (Solanum lycopersicum)

Background: The influence of inorganic fertilizer has posed considerable challenges on increasing food production worldwide. A careful plan is required to increase the yield and quality of crops. A profound knowledge on the use of organic manure involvement in plant growth and development could be beneficial for food production. The use of acceptable inorganic and different concentrations of vermicompost has been used in an attempt to enhance crop growth and development with the aim of increasing food production. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of vermicompost tea concentrate extracted from cow manure and grass cutting on physiological responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).Vegetative growth and yield of tomato was stimulated by mineralization of organic waste coupled with the mesophilic action of earthworm. Vermicompost is a by-product of earthworm tissues. It is a nutrient source rich in essential components for plant growth and development. Methods: An investigation was conducted in pot media under exposed natural conditions from August 2020 to November 2020 at Mangosuthu University of Technology. In this experiment, the growth of tomato plants were subjected to different vermicompost concentrations and amended with NPK fertilizer were studied. Sandy loam soil of about 5 kg were weighted into pot media (2.0mheight, 2.3m diameter). The experiment was set up in a completely randomized block design consisting of five treatments with five replicates per treatment. Treatments included: Positive control (PC), 5%VCL+NPK, 10% VCL+NPK, 20%VCL+NPK and the inorganic (NPK). Result: revealed that there were significant differences at (P less than 0.01) among the treatments with respect to plant height and number of leaves from week three to week eight. Similar trends were found with 5% VCL+NPK, 10% VCL+NPK, 20% VCL+NPK and the NPK treatments. This may be due to phytohormone release from earthworm tissue. Tomato flower inflorescence was significant at (P less than 0.01). Tomato fruit, different components at harvest which were, weight wet and dry weight were higher with NPK treated at (P less than 0.01) than the 5% VCL+NPK, 10% VCL+NPK. Root length in 20% concentration was considerably higher than the other treatments. The results showed that minimum supplementation with inorganic fertiliser may be necessary with vermicompost leachate in order to successfully grow crops in nutrient deficient soil.

Growth and Yield of Two Maize Varieties under the Influence of Plant Density and NPK fertilization

This study assessed growth and yield performances of maize under the influence of inorganic fertilizer, population density and variety using the following treatments: maize varieties DMR-ESR-Y and Suwan- 1-SR; 70 × 30cm and 100 × 40cm plant spacing; 0, 60 and 120 kg NPK/ha . Data were collected on number of leaves per plant, plant height, ear height, leaf area, leaf area index, days to 50% flowering, days to tassel and silk appearances, stem dry mass, root dry mass, cob mass, number of kernel rows, number of kernels per cob, harvest index, treatment yield per hectare. The result showed that combination of 120kgN/ha, DMR-ESR-Y and 47, 619 plants/ha improved root, shoot, leaf sheath and plant dry masses, cob length, cob diameter, shelling percentage, moisture content at harvest, harvest index, number of cobs per plant as well as number of kernels per row. It is, therefore, recommended that combination of 120kgNPK/ha, DMR-ESR-Y and 47,619 plants/ha should be used for better maize production to cater for the ever increasing population of consumers in Southern Guinea savannah agroecological zone of Nigeria and other area with the same climatic and edaphic conditions. &#x0D; Keywords: NPK fertilizer, population density, maize variety, yield improvement

Influence of inorganic fertilizer and organic manure application on fungal communities in a long-term field experiment of Chinese Mollisols

The effects of 35 years of manure amendment on fungal communities were evaluated in Mollisols of northeast China. Soil samples from different fertilization regimes were collected, and quantitative PCR analysis of fungal community size and Illumina platform based analysis of the ITS gene were performed to characterize soil fungal abundance and compare community structure and diversity. The treatments were no fertilizer (CK); manure (M); nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium inorganic fertilizer (NPK); and inorganic fertilizer plus manure (MNPK) regimes. Soil fungal diversity was decreased by inorganic fertilizer. Inorganic fertilizer plus manure induced a weak increase in fungal diversity and a slight decrease in size. The predominant phyla were Ascomycota (63.77–78.70%), Zygomycota (8.33–14.80%) and Basidiomycota (4.03–13.47%). At each taxonomic level, the percentages dramatically differed, especially between MNPK and NPK. For example, the numbers of Fusarium and Gibberella with potential pathogenicity were all higher in NPK than in MNPK; the beneficial genus Podospora was the highest in MNPK and the least in NPK. Principal coordinates analysis showed that CK and M were clustered together; the incorporation of NPK with manure improved the fungal structure near to that of CK and separate from that of NPK. Redundancy analysis indicated that fungal community structure was most affected by soil available phosphorus (AP) and organic matter contents, followed by soil pH. Simpson and Shannon indices were closely correlated with soil pH, AP, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. The results indicated that manure application altered soil properties and soil fungal community structure, and manure with inorganic fertilizer counteracted some of the adverse effects of the inorganic fertilizer.

Influence of Inorganic Fertilizers and Organic Amendments on Plant Nutrients and Soil Enzyme Activities under Incubation

An incubation experiment was carried out in the department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, ANGRAU, Hyderabad, India during 2013−14 with 12 treatments including control to study the mineralization pattern and timely release of nutrients (N, P, K and soil enzymes) to plant from different sources and periods. Mineralization of nitrogen (NH4+-N and NO3−-N), phosphorus (P2O5) potassium (K2O) and soil enzymes (urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase) activities from different treatments were evaluated. During initial period 7 to 21 days after incubation (DAI), the recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) had maximum release of NH4+-N and NO3−-N and later on decreased in the succeeding days but manures combination treatment has taken lead to release the N from 1 DAI to 70 DAI than control. Similar trends were followed in available P2O5 and K2O. The maximum quantity of urease and DHA were reached 203 to 227 μg NH4+-N g−1 soil h−1 and 10.6 to12.4 μg TPF g−1 soil h−1 from combination of poultry manure and neem cake at 70 DAI, respectively. Maximum released of acid and alkaline phosphatase were observed in 21 DAI and 35 DAI in RDF respectively. Among the manures treatment, PM+NC had superior in releasing of alkaline phosphatase over other, followed by poultry manure and FYM+PM. Correlation study between nutrients (N, P and K) and enzymes activity showed that a significant (p<0.05) positive relationship with each others.

Effect of long-term compost and inorganic fertilizer application on background N2O and fertilizer-induced N2O emissions from an intensively cultivated soil

The influence of inorganic fertilizer and compost on background nitrous oxide (N2O) and fertilizer-induced N2O emissions were examined over a maize–wheat rotation year from June 2008 to May 2009 in a fluvo-aquic soil in Henan Province of China where a field experiment had been established in 1989 to evaluate the long-term effects of manure and fertilizer on soil organic status. The study involved five treatments: compost (OM), fertilizer NPK (nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium, NPK), half compost N plus half fertilizer N (HOM), fertilizer NK (NK), and control without any fertilizer (CK). The natural logarithms of the background N2O fluxes were significantly (P<0.05) correlated with soil temperature, but not with soil moisture, during the maize or wheat growing season. The 18-year application of compost alone and inorganic fertilizer not only significantly (P<0.05) increased soil organic carbon (SOC) by 152% and 10–43% (respectively), but also increased background N2O emissions by 106% and 48–76% (respectively) compared with the control. Total N in soils was a better indicator for predicting annual background N2O emission than SOC. The estimated emission factor (EF) of mineralized N, calculated by dividing annual N2O emission by mineralized N was 0.13–0.19%, significantly (P<0.05) lower than the EF of added N (0.30–0.39%). The annual N2O emission in the NPK, HOM and OM soils amended with 300kgha−1 organic or inorganic N was 1427, 1325 and 1178gNha−1, respectively. There was a significant (P<0.05) difference between the NPK and OM. The results of this study indicate that soil indigenous N was less efficiently converted into N2O compared with exogenous N. Increasing SOC by compost application, then partially increasing N supply to crops instead of adding inorganic N fertilizer, may be an effective measure to mitigate N2O emissions from arable soils in the North China plain.

Effect of Mint Distillation Waste on Soil Microbial Biomass in a Mint-Mustard Cropping Sequence

Field experiments were conducted for two years (1997–1999) at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in Lucknow, India, to study the influence of single and combined application of organic manure and inorganic fertilizers on growth and essential oil yield of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis) in mint-mustard cropping sequence. In the original experiment, eight treatments comprising different combinations of manure (FYM) and fertilizer NPK (applied through urea, single superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively) were compared. Attempts were also made to elucide the changes in soil organic carbon (C), soil microbial C, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), and mineralizable C and N. This article deals with the influence of inorganic fertilizer [nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (NPK)] and organic manure (FYM, mint distillation waste) on changes in soil organic C and microbial C, N, and P in mint-fallow-mustard cropping sequence. The data indicates that while inorganic NPK did not have any direct influence on soil microbial biomass, integrated nutrient supply, residue (distillation waste of mint) and type of cropping have been observed to have significant influence on build up of microbial biomass in soil.

Influence of inorganic fertilizers and organic amendments on soil organic matter and soil microbial properties under tropical conditions

Soil organic matter level, mineralizable C and N, microbial biomass C and dehydrogenase, urease and alkaline phosphatase activities were studied in soils from a field experiment under a pearl millet-wheat cropping sequence receiving inorganic fertilizers and a combination of inorganic fertilizers and organic amendments for the last 11 years. The amounts of soil organic matter and mineralizable C and N increased with the application of inorganic fertilizers. However, there were greater increases of these parameters when farmyard manure, wheat straw or Sesbania bispinosa green manure was applied along with inorganic fertilizers. Microbial biomass C increased from 147 mg kg–1 soil in unfertilized soil to 423 mg kg–1 soil in soil amended with wheat straw and inorganic fertilizers. The urease and alkaline phosphatase activities of soils increased significantly with a combination of inorganic fertilizers and organic amendments. The results indicate that soil organic matter level and soil microbial activities, vital for the nutrient turnover and long-term productivity of the soil, are enhanced by use of organic amendments along with inorganic fertilizers.

Influence of chemical fertilizer on yield and fruit quality of Late Valencia sweet orange in Ghana

Studies were conducted to investigate the influence of inorganic fertilizers on the yield and fruit quality of Citrus sinensis [L] Osbeck cv. Late Valencia at the Agricultural Research Station, Okumaning near Kade (ARS-Kade). The trees which were 30 years old, had been budded onto either Rough lemon, C. jambheri Lush (RL), Cleopatra mandarin, C. reticulata Blanco (CM), or Rangpur lime, C. limonia (RGL), rootstocks. The fertilizer treatments common to all the rootstocks were as follows: T1 (control, no fertilizer); T2 (96.4, 40.2, 201 and 70 kg N, P2O5, K2O and S/ha, respectively); T3 (204, 80.4, 402 and 135.6 kg N, P2O5, K2O and S/ha, respectively). In treatments T2 and T3, the fertilizers applied were 15-15-15, sulphate of ammonia, and muriate of potash. For RL, an additional treatment (T4) was applied as in T3 but without S. The effects of fertilizer application rates on the pH, percent juice content, juice volume, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), and TSS/TA ratio were investigated. Fertilizer application increased yield significantly, irrespective of rootstock. The increases ranged between 89 and 122 per cent for RL; 23 and 72 per cent for CM, and 26 and 67 per cent for RGL compared to the no fertilizer application. For RL, ammonium sulphate as N source tended to increase yield more than urea. Increasing fertilizer rate resulted in significant yield increases, irrespective of rootstock. While the pH and TSS/TA ratio of the juice was increased, titratable acidity was decreased by fertilizer application. Except for CM, the highest juice volume was observed from T2. In addition, the TSS was highest at T2 while ammonium sulphate application increased the TSS content of the fruit more than urea, suggesting the importance of sulphur in improving fruit quality. Fertilizer application reduced the maturity period of the fruit as measured by the TSS/TA ratio. A minimum TSS/TA ratio of 10 is recommended for acceptance as maturity index for sweet oranges in Ghana. Ghana Jnl agric. Sci. Vol.31(1) 1998: 27-33
