A Questionnaire Study to Assess the Belief and Barrier to Blood Donation and the Influence of Educational Intervention on Urban and Rural Patients.

Blood transfusion services are an essential part of any healthcare delivery system in today's clinical world with advanced medicines because blood is in high demand during various medical emergencies. Improving knowledge and hastening the development of a positive attitude toward blood donation in society should be the goal of developing an efficient strategy for sustaining a safe and adequate blood supply. The study aims to explore the knowledge, attitude, and motivation toward blood donation among urban and rural patients attending the outreach program. Patients who attended the outreach program held by the Dental College of Uttar Pradesh were subjected to a questionnaire survey to determine their level of knowledge regarding blood donation. Further, an education-based intervention was done among the camp patients to assess the change in their learning after the intervention. The difference between the individual responses prior to and following the intervention was analyzed using the chi-square test. p≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Urban patients comprise 186 males (44.28%) and 234 females (55.72%). Among the rural patients, 205 (45.55%) were males and 245 were females (54.45%). About 48.80% of the urban patients and 48.88% of the rural patients were Hindus while the remaining were Muslims. Only 22.14% of urban patients and 16.88% of rural patients had donated blood till now. The comparison after the intervention for rural patients showed a significant improvement in the level of knowledge and awareness. Although it is quite common knowledge that rural people require more awareness and education related to health, after the conduction of our study, we have resolute evidence that demands thorough IEC and health information activities for the welfare of rural people and to diminish the divide.

Influence of Educational Intervention on Awareness and Attitude of Nursing Students Towards Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting During Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Under-reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is a major concern of the pharmacovigilance program of India and has deteriorated further with the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Imparting the knowledge of pharmacovigilance among nursing students would significantly enhance patient care. Hence, this study was framed to evaluate the effect of an educational intervention on awareness and attitude of ADR reporting among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. A quasi-experimental pretest-post-test study was conducted among nursing students of a tertiary care hospital in South India. The students were asked to fill out a validated questionnaire to assess Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice on ADR reporting, before and after the educational intervention. Knowledge and attitude results were analysed using Mc Nemar's test. A total of 135 nursing students attended the educational intervention and completed pretest and post-test questionnaires. Around 130 (96.3%) and 107 (79.3%) students were aware of pharmacovigilance and ADR monitoring center following the intervention. Median (interquartile range) of knowledge scores before and after the intervention were 3 (2-3) and 5 (3-7), respectively. Overall knowledge score of ADR reporting significantly improved after the intervention. Sixty two (45.9%) students agreed that ADR reporting would enhance patient safety. ADR reporting was practised by 52 (38.5%) participants. Nearly, 107 (79.3%) students were interested to participate in similar pharmacovigilance training programs. Educational intervention in pharmacovigilance improved the cognitive and affective domains of pharmacovigilance in nursing students. Periodic training programs are essential for sustained behavioural change in students.

The Influence of Higher Education on Student Learning and Agency for Sustainability Transition

Higher education (HE) has a key role in educating graduates as decision makers and change agents; however, sustainability education (SE) remains on the fringes of mainstream curricula and is conducted on an ad hoc basis. The context of this research is five connected studies that aimed to investigate the influence of SE on tertiary students’ views, knowledge, behaviour, and agency to contribute to sustainability transitions. The mixed-methods study investigated learning for sustainability by focusing on key elements of the “learning system”, namely the learner’s personal context, the teaching context (SE compared to regular education) and learning outcomes. The research was guided by a unique conceptual framework that linked theories in education and learning, environmental psychology, and sustainability transitions. The influence of educational interventions was assessed using online pre-post surveys that consisted of well-established instruments and open-ended questions. Key transversal findings are resistance to SE, converging views and attitudes towards an “anthropocentric environmentalist” perspective, limited empowerment and occasional disempowerment from SE, a focus on personal behaviour change rather than professional action/agency, and a limited incidence of wider agency. Cumulative and deeper learning for sustainability occurred with repetition of SE and a greater connection to a student’s lifeworld. The current ad hoc approach to SE in HE is ineffective in creating widespread agents for change. Influences that foster transformative learning for sustainability and the development of competency and agency for sustainability are identified, and recommendations are provided for educational policy and praxis to enhance student learning and agency for sustainability transitions.

A study of religious beliefs affecting organ donation & influence of educational intervention in western Maharashtra

In India, many lives that could easily be saved are lost due to a paucity of donated organs. This trend could easily be reversed by educating the general public. Religious beliefs and religious leaders play an important role in the society. With a concept to educate the religious leaders, to strengthen the message of increased organ donation, a study was conceptualized to test the efficacy of such an intervention.To study religious beliefs and organ donation among the heterogenous population of Maval Taluka.A cross-sectional study carried out in the Department of Biochemistry, MIMER Medical College, Talegaon Dabhade, Pune. An educational interventional study was carried out on four basic major religious groups namely Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian. Data was collected from 328 participants by visiting respective religious places. A ten-item self-structured validated questionnaire was designed to assess the knowledge and beliefs regarding organ donation. Pre-test was carried out to assess the basic knowledge on organ donation. Educational intervention regarding the benefits of organ-donation was done, followed by a post-test. The data was statistically analysed by ANOVA in SPSS software.The overall awareness on organ donation was increased by 22% after the planned educational intervention. : These results of the study showed a high degree of acceptance amongst all the groups & willingness for organ donation. Hence, such awareness programmes should be conducted at regular intervals on a large scale so that the problem of shortage of donated organs can be minimized.

MEDIA LEAFLET MENCEGAH LEPRA DI DESA KAYULOMA KECAMATAN BASIDONDO KABUPATEN TOLI-TOLI

ABSTRACT Leprosy is one of the infectious diseases caused by Mycobakterium leprae. Lack of knowledge, attitudes and actions against leprosy, making this disease feared by the public. This study aims to knowing the effect of education method with leaflet media on knowledge, attitude and actions on behavior of leprosy patients to prevention of leprosy in the Kayulompah Village Basidondo District of Tolitoli Regency. This study used quasi eksperimen technique with non-randomized pre dan posttest only control design. The study sample are the 40 leprosy patients with purposive sampling technique. The independent variables are educational methods of lectures with media leaflets about leprosy and it’s prevention, while the dependent variable is knowledge, attitude and action of respondent. The technique of data analysis used paired sample t-test. The result of the study show that there are influence of educational intervention using lecture method with media leaflet on knowledge, attitude and actions on behavior of leprosy patients to prevention of leprosy in the Kayulompah Village Basidondo District of Tolitoli Regency 2017. It is proved by the p-value of pretest and posttest in each variable is significantly smaller than 0.05 (5%) is knowledge 0,000; attitude is 0,000 and actions is 0,000. The average value of knowledge, attitudes and actions of respondents who experienced an increase each week, show that intervention using lecture method with media leaflet give a positive impact of change on knowledge, attitudes and actions of leprosy patients and prevention.Keywords : leprosy, health education, leaflet media

Parental knowledge of pediatric eye health in an ophthalmology clinic setting: validation and delivery of the EYEE questionnaire

ObjectiveWe aimed to develop and assess the reliability of a questionnaire assessing parental knowledge on core topics in pediatric eye health. MethodsIn Phase I, the Evaluate Your Eye Education Questionnaire (EYEE-Q) was developed and distributed to ascertain face validity (n = 20). In Phase II, participants completed EYEE-Q twice to determine test-retest reliability (n = 40). In Phase III, EYEE-Q was administered to parents in a tertiary level pediatric ophthalmology clinic to assess knowledge (n = 193). ResultsEYEE-Q had good test-retest reliability (Kripendorff’s alpha = 0.77). Mean knowledge was 71% on eye physiology, 59% on pediatric vision care, 58% on refractive error, 53% on common childhood eye conditions, and 48% on eye care professional (ECP) roles. Low income, non-Caucasian race, and English as a second language status were associated with poorer scores. ConclusionEYEE-Q is a reliable means of assessing parental knowledge on select pediatric eye health–related topics. Knowledge appears to be suboptimal among parents of children attending tertiary level ophthalmology clinics. ECPs should actively provide educational materials in various languages and formats to promote understanding of medical jargon and patient compliance. The influence of educational interventions on knowledge can be assessed using the EYEE-Q.

Influência de intervenções educativas em perfis antropométricos, clínicos e bioquímicos e na percepção de saúde e doença de portadores de hipertensão arterial no contexto da Saúde da Família

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar a influência de intervenções educativas nos perfis antropométricos, clínicos e bioquímicos, bem como na percepção de saúde e doença de portadores de hipertensão arterial sistêmica no contexto da Estratégia de Saúde da Família. Métodos: Estudo longitudinal, de intervenção e comparativo, realizado com portadores de hipertensão arterial sistêmica cadastrados e acompanhados pela Estratégia de Saúde da Família do município de Porto Firme, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Realizaram-se intervenções educativas, com duração de 12 meses, nas unidades de Estratégia de Saúde da Família e durante visitas domiciliárias. Analisaram-se dados socioeconômicos, hábitos de vida, cuidados de saúde, nível de apreensão e conhecimento sobre a hipertensão arterial sistêmica, percepção de saúde e doença, além das variáveis antropométricas, bioquímicas e clínicas, antes e após as intervenções. Resultados: Ainda que de forma discreta, foi possível perceber melhorias nas avaliações clínicas, bioquímicas e antropométricas. As variáveis índice de massa corporal (p=0,001), circunferência da cintura (p<0,001), glicose (p=0,011), colesterol total (p<0,001), lipoproteínas de alta densidade colesterol (p<0,001) e triglicerídeos (p=0,019) apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas antes e após as intervenções. Os entrevistados mostraram incorporação de novos conhecimentos ao significado da hipertensão arterial sistêmica e a percepção de saúde e doença relacionou-se de forma mais importante com aspectos subjetivos da experiência vivencial e com a qualidade de vida em detrimento das questões biológicas e médicas. Conclusão: As intervenções educativas demonstraram importante potencial no enfrentamento da hipertensão arterial sistêmica ao promoverem alterações positivas nos perfis analisados; contudo, seu efeito tem forte relação com a continuidade das ações.

Nutrition education effective in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among overweight and obese adults

Despite the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption on weight and decreased risk for chronic disease, Americans' intake of fruits and vegetables is well below the recommended daily servings. While previous studies have assessed fruit and vegetable consumption and the influence of educational interventions on fruit and vegetable intake, no studies to date have examined the effects of nutrition education combined with provision of fruits and vegetables on changes in fruit and vegetable consumption among overweight and obese adults. The objectives of this study were to evaluate fruit and vegetable consumption patterns, including intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, provide education about benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, expose participants to different varieties of fruits and vegetables, and improve fruit and vegetable consumption. Fifty-four adults (19 men/35 women; 44.7 ± 12.1 y) were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups. The control group received no intervention, the education group attended weekly nutrition lessons focused on benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, and the fruit and vegetable group attended weekly nutrition lessons and received one serving of fruits and two servings of vegetables per day for 10 weeks. Intake of fruits and vegetables was assessed using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires and three-day food records. Findings suggested that while the majority of participants failed to consume the recommended number of servings of fruits and vegetables per day, nutrition education was helpful in improving the consumption frequency of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables among overweight and obese adults.

Effects of an Educational Module in Rationalizing Surgical Prophylaxis.

Assessment of current antibiotic prescribing patterns is an important step towards appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. This study was planned to know the surgical prophylaxis practices and the influence of educational intervention. In this educational interventional study, only clean and clean-contaminated surgeries were included. Preinterventional study was done by collecting data regarding the use of surgical prophylaxis in the Department of Surgery. After analyzing the preinterventional data, educational intervention was done. A pretest questionnaire was given to all the surgeons to assess knowledge and practice of surgical prophylaxis in our institute. The questionnaire was designed to collect information regarding the use of prophylactic antibiotic, its duration, time of administration, and prevention of surgical site infections (SSI). In our study, third-generation cephalosporin was used in maximum cases in preinterventional analysis and prophylaxis was continued for 3-5days. Surgeon's decision in selecting a prophylactic agent was based on information taken from departmental colleagues or drug companies. Two or more doses of antibiotic were used even when duration of surgery did not exceed more than two and half hours. Definite improvement was seen after the education where single antibiotic was used as prophylactic drug and the first dose of antibiotic was administered 30 to 60min before incision. This shows that educational intervention makes a change in antibiotic prescribing habit. Hence, there is an urgent need for adoption of specific guidelines to ensure standardization of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis practices in hospitals.

Influence of educational intervention on knowledge and attitude toward emergency management of traumatic dental injuries among nursing students in Davangere, India: Pre- and post-design

Introduction: Dental trauma has become an important attribute of dental public health. The management of traumatized teeth depends on prompt and appropriate treatment, which often relies on knowledge of dentists, doctors, and nurses who render the initial care. Aims: To assess the level of knowledge and attitude toward traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) and their emergency management among nursing students in Davangere city. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among the nursing students (240 students) in Davangere city. Pretest knowledge and attitude toward TDIs and its emergency management were assessed using a 21 items structured questionnaire followed by posttest knowledge and attitude assessment after delivering health education on the same day. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was applied to check the pre and post difference in the attitude, knowledge of the nursing students. Results: Post health education, a significant difference in knowledge about immediate emergency management of avulsed tooth and tetanus vaccination was observed (P Conclusions: Though nursing students have a good attitude toward the management of dental injuries but the lack of knowledge regarding the storage media and time management for avulsed tooth leads to undesirable practice in the management of TDIs.
