Nosological profile and classification of infectious diseases of farm animals in the territory of the Pepublic of Sakha (Yakutia)

The results of the classification of infectious diseases of farm animals spread on the territory of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for the period 2001-2021 are presented. It was found that there were 42 nosological units of animal diseases involved in the epizootic process on the territory of Yakutia. Infections in cattle are caused by 18 types of pathogens, horses - 12, reindeer - 4, pigs - 10, birds - 11, small ruminants - 3, fur-bearing animals - 7, other types of animals - 9. According to the OIE classification, 10 nosoforms of diseases are common in Yakutia: rabies, brucellosis, viral hemorrhagic septicemia, equine infectious anemia, avian infectious bronchitis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, paratuberculosis, pasteurellosis and tuberculosis. Diseases not on the OIE list, including Marek’s disease, swine dysentery, colibacillosis, parvoviral enteritis, salmonellosis, diamond-skin disease, blackleg were registered. A number of nosoforms common in Yakutia belong to particularly dangerous diseases for which restrictive measures (quarantine) may be imposed. These include actinomycosis, rabies, brucellosis, infectious equine anemia, avian infectious bronchitis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine leukosis, leptospirosis, paratuberculosis, diamond-skin disease, tuberculosis and canine distemper virus. A number of diseases (Marek’s disease, carnivorous infectious hepatitis, bovine leukosis, horse strangles, avian ornithosis, egg drop syndrome, diamond-skin disease, and blackleg) are peculiar to only one species of animals. Many infections are characterized by the persistence of the pathogen in different species of farm and small domestic animals, birds and wildlife, which determines the interspecies degree of epizootic danger of these infections. Infections of bacterial etiology (bacterioses) prevail in Yakutia with 21 nosoforms. Viral diseases (viroses) are represented by 15 nosoforms, mycoplasmosis and chlamydia - one each. The most numerous infections are those with the main alimentary, or fecal-oral, route (22 diseases). Ten infections, including infectious atrophic rhinitis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, distemper, are classified as airborne or respiratory (major) pathogen transmission. Transmissive carry-over (by vectors) is characterized by actinomycosis and infectious equine anemia; through the outer covers (without the participation of vectors) - 5 diseases, including balanoposthitis and rabies. The majority of the infections are characterized by one or more additional mechanisms of transmission (rabies, Marek’s disease, bovine leukemia, diamond-skin disease, etc.) in addition to the main mechanism of transmission of the pathogen. According to the source of the causative agent for all diseases (ktenonoses) they are domestic animals, but for such infections as rabies, Marek’s disease, viral hemorrhagic septicemia, leptospirosis and others, along with domestic animals, wild animals are an additional source (ktenotherionoses). In terms of susceptibility, most infections (30) belong to zoonoses peculiar only to animals; the remaining 12 belong to the more dangerous zooanthroponoses common to animals and humans.

Salmonellosis is one of the most common acute intestinal diseases, often occurring in the form of group outbreaks with food transmission factor. Among infections of bacterial etiology, it has the highest incidence rates. Infection is registered in all countries and is an pressing medical problem, including the Russian Federation. Also, the public health problem is the resistance of the pathogen to antimicrobial drugs, there is a constant need to determine sensitivity for the correction of therapy. The purpose of our study was to determine the etiological structure of salmonellosis and sensitivity of individual salmonella isolates to antibacterial drugs in the Republic of Mordovia in various years of observation. The material of this study was the case histories of 500 patients hospitalized in Republican Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital. For this purpose, a retrospective analysis of medical records was carried out. We have identified that in the territory of the Republic of Mordovia, the incidence of salmonellosis for many years exceeded the average incidence in Russia. At the same time, its decline was noted during the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection (as well as in Russia as a whole). The article reflects the results of the analysis of the etiological structure, provides data on the dynamic monitoring of the sensitivity of salmonella to antibacterial drugs in the republic. We noted that the appearance of new serological variants of the pathogen is often recorded. At the same time, S. Enteritidis remains predominant. Enteritidis, Munchen, Newport, and Glostrup were highly sensitive to fluoroquinolones, betalactams, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. However, there is a growing trend in the resistance of salmonella to antibacterial drugs, sometimes simultaneously to five and six. Low sensitivity was revealed to ampicillin, gentamicin, tetracycline (more often in S. Enteritidis and S. Glostrup). The information obtained can be used to assess the epidemiological situation, to monitor antimicrobial resistance within the framework of epidemiological surveillance, to optimize antibacterial therapy, as well as in the educational process and clinical practice.

BACTERIAL INTESTINAL INFECTIONS OF YOUNG CATTLE

Gastrointestinal infections of bacterial etiology occupy one of the main places in the pathology of young cattle. The article presents a literature review on the etiology, pathogenesis and clinical diagnosis of major bacterial intestinal infections in young cattle.
 The body of animals is constantly affected by a set of causes, which, due to violations of the technology of maintenance, care and feeding, playing the role of stress factors, leading to reduced nonspecific resistance, increased reactivity and bacteriosis in animals associated with gastrointestinal lesions. Up to 75 % of diseases of the digestive tract of young cattle are more likely to occur as associated infections caused by both viruses and bacteria. Viruses, multiplying in the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, cause dystrophy, necrosis and desquamation of epithelial cells, what promotes the colonization and penetration into the blood of pathogenic bacteria or their metabolites and the development of severe pathological processes.
 Bacterial agents that cause diarrhea or complicate viral infections include pathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Clostridium, Citrobacter, Enterococci, Yersinia, Pseudomonas, Campylobacter and others. A special role in the occurrence of diseases of the digestive tract in young cattle is played by opportunistic pathogens, which include bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae.
 The main intestinal infections of bacterial etiology of young cattle are colibacillosis, salmonellosis, anaerobic enterotoxemia of calves and campylobacteriosis. Calf colibacillosis is an acute infectious disease caused by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, which is characterized by profuse diarrhea, septicemia, intoxication, dehydration and significant animal death. The causative agents of salmonellosis are bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae Salmonella dublin, S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium. Calves suffer from salmonellosis from the first days of life and up to 6 months of age, with a characteristic acute fever and diarrheal symptom complex. Anaerobic enterotoxemia of calves is an acute toxic-infectious disease of mainly newborn young, caused by the obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium perfringens, characterized by hemorrhagic-necrotic inflammation of the intestine, diarrhea and intoxication of the body. Campylobacter jejuni can cause diarrhea in calves. Campylobacteriosis with symptoms of enteritis mainly affects dairy calves, although C. jejuni can also cause enteritis in ruminant calves.
 Other bacteria that can cause enteritis in calves are Bacteroides fragilis, Chlamydophila psittaci, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Yersinia enterocolitica and others.

Absolute Neutropenia and Infection Development in Premature Infants in Early Neonatal Period: Cross-Sectional Study

Background. Premature infants have high risk of developing of neutropenia and infections in the early neonatal period. The correlation of these events requires further studies.Objective. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency of absolute neutropenia and infectious complications cases in premature infants in the early neonatal period with estimation of phenotypical and functional features of cord blood neutrophils.Methods. The study included premature infants (gestational age 25–36 weeks) with APGAR score < 8 on the 1st and 5th minutes of life. The frequency of absolute neutropenia (at least once < 1.5109/l) and infectious complications (localized infections of bacterial etiology, early neonatal sepsis) cases in the first 14 day of life was analysed. Additionally, we have determined the expression of CD64, CD16, CD32 by cord blood neutrophils in premature (n = 102) and mature infants (n = 30) via method of flow cytofluorometry. We have used FITC labeled Escherichia coli to estimate their phagocytic activity, and stimulation of E. coli neutrophils in the presence of 5 mM of dihydrorhodamine 123 to estimate their stimulation index (ratio of mean fluorescent intensity (MFI) of activated neutrophils in stimulated samples and in negative controls, E. coli free samples).Results. The episodes of absolute neutropenia in the first 14 days of life were recorded in 17 cases, infectious complications — in 87 children (in 24 cases — sepsis) in the group of premature infants. The frequency of infectious complications in premature children did not correlate with the frequency of absolute neutropenia episodes. Cord blood neutrophils in premature infants had higher CD64 expression and, on the contrary, lower CD16 expression, as well as low phagocytic activity and stimulation index value (in all cases p < 0.001).Conclusion. Absolute neutropenia in premature infants in early neonatal period does not correlate with high risk of bacterial infections. However, cord blood neutrophils in premature infants had lower functional activity.

Bacterial diarrhea in hospitalized children

Objective: to study the clinical and laboratory manifestations of acute intestinal infections of bacterial etiology in hospitalized children, depending on the etiology, age, topic of the lesion, and complications.A cohort clinical study of 570 children hospitalized from January to October 2019 in the infectious wards of Children's Clinical Hospital No.9 in Moscow was conducted. Studies included routine laboratory methods, bacteriological analysis of feces, Latex test, ELISA, PCR to detect pathogens, serological reactions to detect specific antibodies in blood serum. Two groups of patients were specially formed to compare the features of the course of bacterial diarrhea without hemorrhagic colitis (n = 111) and with hemorrhagic colitis (n = 125).Among 33.2% of cases of deciphered etiology of bacterial diarrhea, Salmonella was isolated in 14.6%, Campylobacter — in 4.7%, Shigella — in 3%, in other cases — conditionally pathogenic flora. Salmonellosis and Сampylobacteriosis with the same frequency are recorded in children in the age groups of 1—3 and 3—7 years, in half of the patients proceed as enterocolitis (58 and 52%, respectively). Shigellosis is diagnosed in children older than 1 year of life with the same frequency in age groups 1—3, 3—7 and older than 7 years, a third of patients (35%) develop severe forms.In most cases (83.2%), a complicated course of bacterial diarrhea was detected, more often dehydration 1 and 2 degrees (36.5%), acute respiratory viral infections (19.6%), mesadenitis (11.2%), community-acquired pneumonia (4.6%).Enterocolitis is the topic of lesion in half of the children, and every 5th patient develops hemorrhagic colitis (21.9%). In 44% of cases of established etiology of hemorrhagic colitis, Salmonella was confirmed. Hemocolitis also develops more often with shigellosis, campylobacteriosis and clostridiosis. In the group of bacterial diarrhea with hemorrhagic colitis, significant differences were revealed compared with the group without hemocolitis: by the frequency of development in children under 3 years of age; by the duration of treatment in a hospital; by the frequency of mesadenitis; by the content of stab neutrophils in the hemogram, reflecting a more pronounced inflammation in hemorrhagic colitis.Thus, bacterial diarrhea in children remains relevant due to the severity of inflammation, the incidence of complicated course and hemorrhagic colitis, which requires hospitalization.

Antimicrobial activity of danofloxacin regarding to bacteria, pathogens of respiratory infections in pigs

The objective of the research was to study the antimicrobial activity of danofloxacin, the third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, against bacteria, pathogens of acute respiratory infection in pigs. Samples of nasal excretions were selected from clinically sick weaned piglets with acute respiratory infection for microbiological investigation. The sensitivity test, carried out by the disc-diffusion method, showed a high level of the microflora sensitivity of the inflammatory exudate to danofloxacin. Bacteria Streptococcus suis and Bordetella bronchiseptica have been isolated and identified from biomaterial by generally accepted microbiological methods. The degree of antimicrobial activity of danofloxacin against isolated strains of microorganisms was established by determination the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of danofloxacin for isolated bacteria by consecutive dilutions in a liquid nutrient medium. The MIC average of danofloxacin for Streptococcus suis isolates (n = 20) was 0.33 ± 0.082 μg/ml and for Bordetella bronchiseptica isolates (n = 8) – 0.21 ± 0.044 μg/ml. The obtained results showed a high level of bacteriostatic activity of danofloxacin regarding bacterial isolates, pathogens of acute respiratory infection in pigs. Danofloxacin, like other fluoroquinolones, is a critical antimicrobial substance for veterinary medicine. Therefore, chemotherapeutic agents based on this antibiotic can serve as a drug of choice for empirical treatment of pigs with acute respiratory infections of bacterial etiology. To right choose an effective agent for etiotropic therapy and minimize the selection of resistant strains of microorganisms, the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated bacteria should be pre-established.

Epidemiological Situation on Natural Focal Infectious Diseases in the Territory of the North-Caucasian Federal District in 2015

Objective of the study is to analyze epidemiological and epizootiological manifestations of natural-focal infections in the territory of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) in 2015. Materials and methods. Utilized were the reports of the Rospotrebnadzor Administrations, “Centers of Hygiene and Epidemiology” in the NCFD entities, Stavropol Research Anti-Plague Institute, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria Plague Control Stations. Data processing was conducted using Excel Microsoft ware. Results and conclusions. Identified have been 8 nosological forms of natural-focal infections, including infections of bacterial etiology – 6 (75 %), and viral etiology – 2 (25 %). The majority of patients (164) are identified in the Stavropol Region: 67 (intestinal yersiniosis), 43 (Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever), 40 (Lyme borreliosis), 9 (leptospirosis), 2 (pseudotuberculosis), 1 (rabies), 1 (human granulocytic anaplasmosis) and 1 (human monocytic ehrlichiosis). The patients with 2 nosological forms of natural focal infections are identified in the Republic of Dagestan: 2 – Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever and one patient – tularemia. Also 2 nosological forms of natural focal infections are revealed in the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia: one case of leptospirosis and one case of Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever (imported from the Stavropol region). 8502 field samples have been tested for the presence of markers of 12 nosological forms of natural-focal infections. Positive results for 10 of them have been obtained. The most comprehensive epizootiological monitoring has been carried out in the Stavropol Territory (10 nosological forms), whereat circulation of 8 pathogenic agents is registered.

Analysis of the Tropism and Anti-Bacterial Potential of a Type of Clay

Natural clays have been used by man in infections of bacterial etiology, since the first historical registers. Our attention turned to a red-colored clay, known in the northeast of Brazil as “barro de lou&#231a” (dish clay). These clays and other natural earth materials seem interesting to us, as the blockage of the liberation of toxins or inactivation, may be related to the interruption of infection cycles in the skin and mucous membranes. The adsorptive and absorptive properties of the mineral clays are well documented in the cure process of skin and gastrointestinal diseases. Susceptibility and bacterial tropism tests were carried out. The results were analyzed and interpreted according to the conventional microbiological protocol. The bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli e Pseudomonas aeruginosa, did not present a susceptibility profile to an isotonic solution of clay, but there was an increase of the bacterial tropism as the concentration of the isotonic solution was increased, being the minimal observed concentration of 100 mg/mL. Our aim is to document a type of red clay from the northeast of Brazil with possible attraction properties (Tropism) to bacteria and their toxins.

Intestinal infections of bacterial etiology in newborn calves

The species composition and biological properties of bacterial pathogens etiologically significant in intestinal infections of newborn calves at Far East farms are studied.
