The association between human papillomavirus infection, vaginal microecology, and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in women from Xinjiang, China.

This study analyzes the relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, vaginal microecology, and cervical lesions to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer (CC) in the Xinjiang region. Real-time quantitative PCR was used for HPV genotyping and viral load. The Gram staining and dry biochemical enzyme kit were utilized to diagnose vaginal secretions. The χ2 test and Logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. The HPV infection rate among women in the Xinjiang region was 30.29%, of which the single HPV infection accounts for 77%. HPV16 and HPV52 were the main infection types. There was significant differences in the HPV infection rate and infection types among the Han, Uighur, Hui, and Kazakh ethnic groups. The viral load of HPV16 and HPV52 increases with the upgrade of cervical lesions. There were significant differences in vaginal microecology evaluation indicators H2O2, SNA, LE, GUS, trichomonas, clue cells, and lactobacilli among different ethnic groups. HPV negative patients with varying grades of cervical lesions exhibit a notable variance in H2O2 and LE, which is statistically significant. Single HPV infection and high viral load HPV significantly increase the risk of CC. This study indicates that HPV infection and vaginal microecology differ among ethnic groups, which have a strong correlation with the progression of CC, offering guidance on CC screening and interventions in the Xinjiang area.

Incidence of oncogenic HPV infection in women with and without mental illness: A population-based cohort study in Sweden.

Women with mental illness experience an increased risk of cervical cancer. The excess risk is partly due to low participation in cervical screening; however, it remains unknown whether it is also attributable to an increased risk of infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). We aimed to examine whether women with mental illness had an increased infection rate of HPV compared to women without mental illness. Using a cohort design, we analyzed all 337,116 women aged 30 to 64 and living in Stockholm, who had a negative test result of 14 high-risk HPV subtypes in HPV-based screening, during August 2014 to December 2019. We defined women as exposed to mental illness if they had a specialist diagnosis of mental disorder or had a filled prescription of psychotropic medication. We identified incident infection of any high-risk HPV during follow-up and fitted multivariable Cox models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for HPV infection. A total of 3,263 women were tested positive for high-risk HPV during follow-up (median: 2.21 years; range: 0 to 5.42 years). The absolute infection rate of HPV was higher among women with a specialist diagnosis of mental disorder (HR = 1.45; 95% CI [1.34, 1.57]; p < 0.001) or a filled prescription of psychotropic medication (HR = 1.67; 95% CI [1.55, 1.79]; p < 0.001), compared to women without such. The increment in absolute infection rate was noted for depression, anxiety, stress-related disorder, substance-related disorder, and ADHD, and for use of antidepressants, anxiolytics, sedatives, and hypnotics, and was consistent across age groups. The main limitations included selection of the female population in Stockholm as they must have at least 1 negative test result of HPV, and relatively short follow-up as HPV-based screening was only introduced in 2014 in Stockholm. Mental illness is associated with an increased infection rate of high-risk HPV in women. Our findings motivate refined approaches to facilitate the WHO elimination agenda of cervical cancer among these marginalized women worldwide.

Human papillomavirus prevalence and dynamics: Insights from a 5-year population-based study in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

To estimate the prevalence and dynamics of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, over a 5-year period, among Saudi women. A 2-phase, population-based study combining cross-sectional and cohort designs was carried out with 5360 ever-married women aged 30-65 from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2013 and 2018. Participants were enrolled in a designated screening program and screened using the hybrid capture 2 HPV test. Women testing positive for HPV were followed up after one year to estimate the HPV clearance rate, while those testing negative had a follow-up after 5 years to assess new HPV infections. Factors associated with HPV positivity and clearance, including sociodemographic and clinical aspects, were analyzed. Participant's mean age was 44.3 and the average marriage duration was 22.6 years. The initial HPV prevalence was 4.7%. After one year, the HPV clearance rate among initially positive women was 84.3%. The rate of new HPV infections among initially negative women after 5 years was 0.2%, resulting in a cumulative HPV prevalence of 5% over the study period. The incidence rate was estimated at 47 per 100,000 person-years. Parity was the only independent factor inversely associated with HPV positivity, with an odds ratio of 0.93 (95% confidence interval: 0.8 - 0.99). The prevalence of HPV in Saudi women was relatively low, suggesting a low transmission rate of HPV. This finding indicates the need for continuous monitoring and tailored prevention strategies.

The Epidemiology of Anal Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Women and Men: A Ten-Year Retrospective Observational Study in Rome (Italy).

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) commonly infect the anogenital mucosa; most infections are transient, but a fraction of those caused by high-risk (HR) types persist and may lead to anogenital cancer. The epidemiology of HPV genotypes in anal infections in groups at different risk for anal cancer has not been well described in Italy. This retrospective study reports the results of HPV DNA testing and complete genotyping performed on anal swabs from 691 female and male patients attending proctology clinics in Rome during 2012-2021; one-third had repeated testing. Cumulative HPV positivity in 1212 anal swabs was approximately 60%, was not age related, and showed an increasing trend over the study period. HPV rates differed significantly by sex and HIV status: HIV-negative women had the lowest (43.6%) and HIV-positive men the highest (83.5%) HPV prevalence. HIV-positive men had more oncogenic HPV genotypes detected, more multiple infections, and the highest frequency of persistent infections. Two-thirds of all infections were vaccine-preventable. This study found that anal HPV infection rates are still elevated and even increasing in groups at low and high risk of developing anal cancer. Prevention programs need to be improved to reduce rates of anal infection in young women and men.

HPV prevalence and distribution characteristics in postmenopausal women from Nanjing, China

BackgroundCervical cancer is strongly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the data of postmenopausal women who were tested for HPV in Nanjing First Hospital from 2019 to 2021.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the data of 14,608 postmenopausal women aged 45–90 years, who underwent HPV examination in Nanjing First Hospital between January 2019 and December 2021. All participants were tested for 23 HPV genotypes. We subsequently analyzed the infection rate and evaluated the distribution of HPV using the chi-square test.ResultsOur results showed that the HPV infection rate in postmenopausal women in Nanjing, China was 22.36%. In terms of age group, the infection rate was 19.54%, 24.30%, 26.58%, and 14.99% in those aged ≤ 50, 51–60, 61–70, and ≥ 71 years, respectively. The most common HPV subtypes were HPV52 (22.1 3%), HPV58 (15.86%), HPV53 (14.17%), HPV16 (12.61%), and HPV81 (11.66%), in that order. The single-HPV infection rate was 14.23%, and the multiple-genotype infection rate was 8.14% (1189/14,608).ConclusionsThis study showed that in Nanjing, China, the different age groups of post-menopausal women could have different rates of HPV infection, and the most common types were HPV52, HPV58, HPV53, HPV16 and HPV81. These findings highlighted the importance of understanding the epidemiology of HPV infection in specific populations, such as postmenopausal women in Nanjing, China. The results could provide valuable information for healthcare professionals and policymakers to develop targeted prevention and screening strategies for reducing the burden of HPV-related diseases in this population.

Human papillomavirus prevalence and genotype distribution in Liaocheng men between 2016 and 2022.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can lead to HPV-related cancer in men, including the anus, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers and precancerous lesions. This study retrospectively investigated HPV prevalence and genotype distribution in Liaocheng men between 2016 and 2022. The total HPV positive rate was 64.87% (2388/3681, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 63.32%-66.40%), where high risk (HR)-HPV and low risk (LR)-HPV accounted for 42.49% (1564/3681, 95% CI: 40.90%-44.09%) and 69.71% (2566/3681, 95% CI: 68.20%-71.17%), respectively. The mixed HPV infection rate of two and more genotypes was 35.72%. The infection rate of HR-HPV increased with the number of positive cases annually from 2016 (16.91%) to 2022 (46.59%). The most common HR-HPV genotypes were HPV16 (11.60%), HPV52 (6.95%), and HPV59 (6.28%), whereas the least common HR-HPV was HPV26. The most common LR-HPV genotypes were HPV6 (56.99%), HPV11 (23.79%), and HPV43 (6.37%). The 9 v HPV vaccine preventable for LR-HPV and HR-HPV accounted for 80.78% and 30.40%, respectively, in this study. Most HPV-positive patients aged 1-86 were in the 30-39 age group. This study confirmed that HPV prevalence in Liaocheng men was common and diverse. HPV16, HPV52, and HPV59 are widely distributed in Liaocheng men, and the male HR-HPV infection rate remained high in this region. Regarding public health and cancer prevention, it is recommended and effective to include the HPV vaccination in the national vaccination program for men.

Clinicopathologic characteristics of HPV-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Southern China: long-term retrospective study of 400 cases.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is an evolving and growing disease, especially in developing countries. However, the clinical characteristics of HPV-associated HNSCC in regard to HPV infection rates, patient features, and prognosis are under-reported in the Asian population. In this study, we retrospectively enrolled a 400-case cohort of HNSCC with p16 immunochemistry and analyzed with long-term follow-up. We investigate the current HPV prevalence of HNSCC, unique HPV-associated patient clinical characteristics, and patient prognosis in the southern China population. HPV infection exhibited a 15% prevalence in all HNSCC cases, notably higher in oropharyngeal cases (30.7%), followed by oral cavity (11.8%), laryngeal (10.1%), and hypopharyngeal (2.5%). HPV status, gender, old age, and location of tumor were significantly associated with the patient's survival. Tonsil invasion was found more frequent in HPV-positive oropharyngeal HNSCC than in HPV-negative cases. HPV-associated HNSCC patients tend to possess stronger tobacco and alcohol habits, which were correlated to poor survival. HPV status's correlation with gender, age, and anatomical location is associated intricately with patient survival. The secondary primary tumor rate was found higher within the HPV-negative group, compared to the HPV-positive group (9.12% versus 1.67%). Our study provided a current picture of HPV-associated HNSCC in the southern China population and elaborated the understanding of key factors that correlate to HNSCC prognosis. Our findings indicated a strong susceptibility of HPV-associated oropharyngeal HNSCC in the tonsil and the difference in secondary primary tumor rates associated with HPV status.

Listing and Comparing the Immunogenicity, Safety, and Effectiveness of 9vHPV Vaccinations for Different Age Groups: 9-15 Years Old, 16-26 Years Old, 27-45 Years Old

The effectiveness of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in preventing high-risk HPV infections and accompanying serious vaginal, cervical, and vulvar disorders was verified. The development of the 9-valent HPV(9vHPV) vaccine yields greater coverage versus the quadrivalent (qHPV) vaccine. This study aims to assess the 9vHPV from immunogenicity, safety, and effectiveness in three different age groups respectively: 9-15 years old, 16-26 years old, and 27-45 years old. This paper searched PubMed and Embase databases to include related clinical trials of these three age groups and ensure a large-scale study population. Immunogenicity analysis for different age groups reported that the geometric mean titers (GMTs) decreased with age but could still stimulate robust and effective immune responses. The antibody levels of the subjects significantly increased to reach protective levels and persisted for a long time after vaccination. Besides, the 9vHPV vaccine has a high protective effect against the infection of nine subtypes of HPV. Both HPV infection rates and rates of associated diseases significantly decreased versus those who did not receive the vaccine. Additionally, the outcomes also demonstrated that the safety of the 9vHPV vaccines was good across all age groups. The intensity of most reported injection-site adverse events (AEs) and vaccine-related systemic AEs were not serious. Serious adverse reactions are very rare. In total, immunogenicity, efficacy, and safety in different age groups of the 9vHPV vaccination are overall good. These findings provide scientific evidence for the immunization of the 9vHPV vaccine and recommend the optimal age for vaccination.

[Analysis of the current status and related factors of human papillomavirus infection among community-dwelling women aged 18-24 years without a history of vaccination in Shanghai City].

Objective: To understand the status of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among young women without a history of vaccination in Shanghai, and analyze the related factors of HPV infection in this population. Methods: A total of 2 660 women aged 18-24 years old who had made an appointment for HPV vaccine at 36 community health service centers in Shanghai from July 2022 to February 2023 were selected as the study subjects. Basic information (including demographic characteristics, previous disease history, female menstrual and reproductive history, sexual life history, etc.) was collected by a self-filling electronic questionnaire. Cervical secretions were detected by HPV nucleic acid typing. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the factors related to high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection in the target population. Results: The age of the subjects was (23±1) years old, and the infection rate of HPV was 14.51% (386 cases), among which the infection rates of HR-HPV and low-risk HPV were 13.53% (360 cases) and 1.84% (49 cases), respectively. The main subtypes of HR-HPV infection were HPV52, 16, 58, 39 and 66. The multivariate logistic regression model analysis showed that compared with the control group, the OR (95%CI) values for HR-HPV infection in the group of married, earned less than 2 000 yuan/month, drank alcohol occasionally, gynecological disease history, had two or more sexual partners in the past year, and did not know whether the partners had other sexual partners were 0.41 (0.25-0.66), 0.39 (0.21-0.70), 1.45 (1.13-1.86), 1.29 (1.00-1.66), 2.18-5.18 (1.02-16.05), and 1.82 (1.31-2.54), respectively. Conclusion: The infection rate of HPV among women aged 18-24 years old in Shanghai remains at a high level. The main subtypes of HR-HPV infection are HPV52, 16, 58, 39 and 66. The marital status, economic income level, drinking status, gynecological disease history and sexual life history are related to HR-HPV infection.

Abstract C058: Differential DNA methylation in HPV+ and HPV- penile tumors from Puerto Rican men

Abstract The incidence of penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) in Puerto Rico is nearly three times higher when compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States.  Mortality rate for PSCC is also significantly higher among Puerto Rican men when compared to the US population. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus, and its infection may increase the risk of developing PeCa. Despite the high incidence, the molecular mechanism of PSCC remains poorly understood.  Our laboratory found that the prevalence of HPV in PSCC in Puerto Rican men is 49%. Due to the high rates of HPV infection and increased incidence of penile cancer in Puerto Rican men, there is a need to understand the pathogenesis of penile cancer. DNA Methylation is an epigenetic alteration that can be found in cancer cells, which can lead to changes in gene expression and cellular function. This study aims to analyze the DNA methylation patterns in HPV-positive and HPV-negative PSCC tissues from Puerto Rican men. DNA was extracted from twenty-four fresh PSCC tissue samples from Puerto Rican patients. HPV status and genotyping were determined using the DNA ELISA kit HPV SPF10 protocol. DNA was amplified and hybridized using PCR. We perform a DNA methylation assay using the Infinium Methylation EPIC v2.0 BeadChip Kit to identify and compare average DNA methylation levels (%) in the 9 HPV-positive and 15 HPV-negative penile cancer samples. Our results demonstrated 43 loci significantly different between HPV-positive and HPV-negative samples, with an adjusted p-value &amp;lt;0.1 (Benjamini-Hochberg method). Most of the hypermethylated loci were present in HPV-negative tumor samples. Additionally, we identified four methylated-differentially expressed genes: ANXA4, CACNA1C-AS1, UBXN2A, and DUOX1, which are found as uncharacterized proteins (open reading frames, ORFs) of the human genome with adjusted p-value &amp;lt;0.05. Studies have revealed that specific DNA methylation patterns could be linked with cancer development and progression. Identification of differentially methylated regions in HPV positive (HPV+) PSCC compared with HPV negative (HPV-) cases will provide much needed data to aid studies on early detection, prognosis, and development of therapeutic agents to reduce the morbidity and mortality from PeCa. HPV infection and vaginal microecological disorders in women with intrauterine adhesion: cross-sectional study in a Chinese population

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the vaginal microecology and the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes in patients with uterine adhesions and explore the correlation between HPV infection and vaginal microecology imbalance and the occurrence of intrauterine adhesion (IUA).MethodsA total of 479 women were enrolled in the study, including 259 in the normal group and 220 in the IUA group. Vaginal microecological and HPV analyses were performed on all participants. Significant differences between the two groups were analyzed, and Spearman correlation analysis was performed.ResultsThe incidence of IUA in patients between 31 and 40 years of age was high. The I-II degree of vaginal cleanliness in the IUA group was significantly lower than that in the normal group, and the number of III-IV degree was significantly higher than that in the normal group. Moreover, the incidences of VVC (vulvovaginal candidiasis) and vaginal disorders and infections with HPV 16 and HPV 52 subtypes were significantly higher in the IUA group than in the normal group. The incidence of high-risk HPV infection combined with vaginal disorders in the IUA group was higher than that in the normal group. Correlation analysis showed that the occurrence of IUAs was positively correlated with HPV infection and negatively correlated with PH and vaginal microecological imbalance.ConclusionThe HPV infection rate and vaginal microecology disorders affect the occurrence of IUAs. For patients with IUAs, control of the HPV infection rate and the prevention of vaginal microecological disorders should be improved.

Efficacy of Human Papillomavirus Vaccines for Recalcitrant Anogenital and Oral Warts

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are preventive measures to decrease HPV infection rates. Knowledge of their efficacy as treatment options for anogenital warts (AGWs) and oral warts (OWs) is limited. To evaluate the efficacy of HPV vaccinations in recalcitrant AGWs and OWs (lesions persisting more than 6 months despite conventional treatments), we compared a group of patients treated with standard therapies plus an HPV vaccine with a group of patients treated with standard therapies only. The response to treatment (in terms of the number of lesions) in the two groups was compared. Data were analyzed with the χ2 test and p values &lt; 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant. The study included 14 patients (group A = cases) who received 3 doses of an intramuscular HPV vaccine (Gardasil 4 or Gardasil 9) in addition to the standard treatments for AGWs and OWs, and 15 age- and sex-matched patients (group B = controls) with an analogous number of lesions to group A who received only standard therapies. After 12 months, 85% of patients of group A versus 33% of group B had positive clinical outcomes (0.004). Our findings suggest a possible therapeutic role of HPV vaccines in addition to standard treatments for AGWs/OWs. Preventive vaccines, blocking the viral entry through the induction of L1-specific antibodies, can prevent autologous reinfections (through auto-inoculation) and favor the elimination of the virus.

Epidemiology, Molecular Pathogenesis, Immuno-Pathogenesis, Immune Escape Mechanisms and Vaccine Evaluation for HPV-Associated Carcinogenesis.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is implicated in over 90% of cervical cancer cases, with factors like regional variability, HPV genotype, the population studied, HPV vaccination status, and anatomical sample collection location influencing the prevalence and pathology of HPV-induced cancer. HPV-16 and -18 are mainly responsible for the progression of several cancers, including cervix, anus, vagina, penis, vulva, and oropharynx. The oncogenic ability of HPV is not only sufficient for the progression of malignancy, but also for other tumor-generating steps required for the production of invasive cancer, such as coinfection with other viruses, lifestyle factors such as high parity, smoking, tobacco chewing, use of contraceptives for a long time, and immune responses such as stimulation of chronic stromal inflammation and immune deviation in the tumor microenvironment. Viral evasion from immunosurveillance also supports viral persistence, and virus-like particle-based prophylactic vaccines have been licensed, which are effective against high-risk HPV types. In addition, vaccination awareness programs and preventive strategies could help reduce the rate and incidence of HPV infection. In this review, we emphasize HPV infection and its role in cancer progression, molecular and immunopathogenesis, host immune response, immune evasion by HPV, vaccination, and preventive schemes battling HPV infection and HPV-related cancers.

Prevalence and Risk Assessment of Human Papillomavirus Infection in a Bengali Cohort

Cervical cancer is a notable cause of mortality and morbidity among women of reproductive age. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer among women. Among 170 types of HPV; HPV-16 and -18 are responsible for cervical cancer. The overexpression of oncoproteins E6 and E7 are predominantly responsible for causing neoplasia. The presence of koilocytosis/koilocytotic atypia is the diagnostic point of HPV infection in pap smears. To identify the circulating types of HPV and determine the various risk factors associated with HPV infection, 100 vaginal biopsies or swabs were taken from patients suspected with cervical cancer, and qualitative and semi-quantitative real-time PCR were performed. PCR primers (GP5+/GP6+) based on a conserved region of the HPV-L1open reading frame(ORF) gene were used for the detection of HPV strains, while another set of primers was used for detecting the E6 gene (HPV-16) and E7 gene (HPV-18). The results showed an HPV infection rate of 23%. Furthermore, the prevalent genotype was found to be HPV-16 (73.91%), followed by HPV-18 (26.1%), while mixed infections of both HPV-16 and -18 accounted for 21.74%. In addition, an age of above 45 years, multiple pregnancies, low socioeconomic status, postmenopausal state, anemia, and early coitarche were significantly associated with HPV infection. These results provide the basis for the formulation of an appropriate strategy for disease monitoring to determine the frequency and distribution pattern of HPV infection.

The prevalence of HPV among 164,137 women in China exhibited some unique epidemiological characteristics

ObjectiveThe persistence of HPV infection is a significant etiological factor in the development of cervical cancer. The present study investigated the prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a cohort of 164,137 unvaccinated women from Wenzhou, aiming to provide guidance for clinics in the cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination strategies.MethodsThe present retrospective study included a total of 164,137 women, comprising 118,484 outpatients and 45,653 healthy female subjects recruited from 2015 to 2020. Cervical exfoliated cells were collected from these participants for subsequent DNA extraction. The extracted DNA samples were underwent analysis using a fluorescence in situ hybridization method, encompassing the detection of 27 HPV genotypes.ResultsThe overall prevalence of HPV was 17.35%; this corresponded to a prevalence of 19.10% in the outpatient group and 12.82% in the healthy female group. Among the outpatient group, the five most prevalent HPV genotypes were identified as HPV 52, 58, 16, 53, and 61. In the healthy female group, the five most common HPV genotypes were found to be HPV 52, 53, 58, 61, and 81. Additionally, it was estimated that the highest rate of HPV infection occurred among individuals aged between 10 and 19 years old (44.65%) and those aged between 60 and 69 years old (27.35%).ConclusionsThe prevalence of HPV in this region is substantial; therefore, it is imperative to implement scientifically sound and rational clinical interventions such as vaccination. Routine cervical screening should be performed to prevent the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia resulting from persistent infection with high-risk HPV, particularly in women with gynecological diseases and those over 60 years old.

Co-infection with human papillomavirus and sexually transmitted infections among Chinese individuals

ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and their co-infections on different genders and ages. MethodsDifferent samples of secretions from the reproductive system were collected from 459 males and 494 females for HPV and STI detection. ResultsTotal HPV infection rate was 49.46 % for males and 48.99 % for females, and the distribution of HPV subtypes varied significantly between different genders. The infection rate of HR-HPV 52 and 31 in females was higher than that in males (p = 0.002 and 0.039, respectively). In contrast, the infection rate of LR-HPV 6 and 11 in males was higher than that in females (p = 0.01 and 0.001, respectively). Females had a significantly higher infection rate of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU). Besides, these STIs were stratified based on age and the results indicated that the highest incidence of STIs was observed in younger patients (<20 years old). Patients with HPV infections had a higher incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) in both males and females. ConclusionsThere is a need to perform HPV, CT and UU screening among patients, and more thorough health education for younger patients is of great clinical significance to improve treatment and prognosis.

Analysis of HPV prevalence among individuals with reproductive tract infections in a Chinese population.

The previous research has found that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of cervical cancer, but it is still unclear whether HPV infection, as well as the HPV genotypes, are related to reproductive tract infections in the Chinese population. Patients who underwent HPV screening at Shandong Maternal and Child Health Hospital were selected, and the HPV infection status was analyzed among patients with cervical lesions, bacterial vaginosis, cervical inflammation, fungal vaginitis, and pelvic infections. SPSS 22 statistical analysis was used to analyze the differences in HPV infection types and rates between the control group and the experimental group. The HPV infection rate of bacterial vaginosis (χ2 = 13.4; P < .001) and fungal vaginitis (χ2 = 3.3; P < .045) are both significantly different from the control group. The single HPV infections reveals significant differences from control group in bacterial vaginosis (χ2 = 7.3; P = .004), fungal vaginitis (χ2 = 4.5; P = .023), and cervical lesions (χ2 = 58.8; P < .001). In the bacterial infection group, HPV51 (1.9%; χ2 = 6.0; P = .008) and HPV58 (4.7%; χ2 = 3.3; P = .044) showed significant differences in infection compared to the control group. In the fungal infection group, HPV39 (2.7%; χ2 = 4.7; P = .032) showed a significant difference in infection compared to the control group. Cervical lesions, bacterial vaginosis, fungal vaginitis, and cervical lesions among Chinese population exhibit age-specified distribution. HPV infection rate in bacterial vaginitis, fungal vaginitis and cervical lesions was higher than that in normal group. HPV52 and HPV16 infection are different, and HPV39 is different between bacterial vaginitis and fungal vaginitis.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV infection in Beijing, China.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections nationwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly influenced on the HPV prevention project. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of the pandemic on HPV prevalence and genotype distribution in Beijing, China. A total of 44 401 genital swabs were obtained from outpatients at Peking Union Medical College Hospital during two distinct periods: the prepandemic stage from January 2017 to December 2019 and the pandemic stage from January 2020 to December 2022. During the prepandemic and pandemic stages, a total of 33 531 and 10 870 swabs were respectively collected. Fifteen high-risk HPV(HR-HPV) DNA type and a combination of two low-risk (LR-HPV) types (6/11) of genital swabs were detected to compare the HPV infection rates and genotype distributions in two stages. The results showed that the pandemic period witnessed a decrease in the overall HPV infection rate from 33.43% (11 245/33 531) to 29.43% (5527/18 780) compared to the prepandemic. There were statistically significant differences in infection rates between females and males (p < 0.05). Single infection was the predominant type while multiple infection was more prevalent in males than females in both prepandemic and pandemic periods. HR-HPV infection constituted the majority of infections and cannot be disregarded. The distribution of HR-HPV genotypes exhibited little variation before and after the outbreak, but there were some differences between females and males. HPV 16, 52, 58, 56, and 66 were the most commonly detected genotypes in females, whereas HPV 16, 52, 51, 58, and 18 were frequently detected in males. Additionally, HPV 6/11 exhibited a higher prevalence in males than in females. Notably, the age group of 31-40 years old exhibited the highest prevalence of HPV and the lowest infection rate was detected among individuals aged ≤20 years (p < 0.05), which remained relatively consistent before and during the pandemic. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring the trend of HPV epidemic and offer valuable insights for the prevention, treatment, and scientific investigation of HPV in the post-COVID-19 era.

Is the Anal Component of the Anogenital HPV-Related Disease Overlooked During the Surveillance of Patients Treated for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia?

To investigate the anal component of the anogenital Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related disease during surveillance of patients treated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Patients were analyzed within two groups according to the histopathological examination of the cervical biopsies: Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL) and High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (HSIL) groups. Anal specimens were also collected in the first-year follow-up visit. All patients had cervical high-risk HPV (HR HPV) infection at admission. At the first-year follow-up, positive HR HPVs were found in 47% of cervical samples. Despite this clearance, the anal HPV infection rate after the first year was 42.5% and 39.6% in LSIL and HSIL groups. Amongst the HSIL group, anal HR HPV positivity was observed in 29.6% of cases without any cervical HPV infection. A group of women cured of high-grade lesions have ongoing anal HPV infection. It is reasonable to propose that detecting anal HPV could impact the patient's treatment process. Therefore, prospective studies are needed to investigate this group of women's clinical outcomes and define the clearance rate of cervical HPV infection when anal HPV persists.
