Application of detailed nursing management intervention in neurosurgical nursing

BACKGROUND: In the contemporary healthcare environment, optimizing patient care strategies is of importance, particularly in neurosurgical environments. While traditional nursing methods have the foundation of patient care, there exists a growing recognition of the potential benefits of comprehensive nurse management. Despite this acknowledgment, there remains a gap in understanding the comparative effectiveness of comprehensive nurse management versus traditional approaches in reducing postoperative psychological stress, enhancing patient satisfaction, and promoting adherence in neurosurgical patients. OBJECTIVE: This study compares the efficacy of comprehensive nurse management against traditional methods in facilitating the postoperative recovery of neurosurgical patients. METHODS: Taking the traditional nursing management and detailed nursing management of neurosurgical patients in a municipal neurosurgical hospital from March 2021 to March 2022 as an example, the neurosurgery was divided into 50 patients in the detailed nursing management group and 50 patients in the traditional nursing management group. In the clear nursing management group, there were 50 patients, 20 male patients, with an average age of 58.7 ± 3.8 years, and 30 female patients, with an average age of 60.4 ± 4.3 years; In the traditional nursing management group, there were 50 patients, 26 male patients, with an average age of 59.7 ± 3.7 years, and 24 female patients, with an average age of 59.4 ± 3.9 years; Among the 100 patients, there were 60 cases of cerebral infarction, 25 cases of intracerebral hemorrhage and 15 cases of other neurosurgical diseases. RESULTS: Hundred neurosurgical patients were divided into two groups: comprehensive nursing management group and traditional nursing management group. The results showed that the comprehensive treatment effect of patients with detailed nursing management was better than that of the routine nursing group. At the same time, the complications were reduced, and the patient’s satisfaction was higher. CONCLUSION: Through retrospective analysis and investigation of patients, this paper discusses the clinical application of a detailed nursing management model in neurosurgery, which can reduce the probability of infection and other complications and improve the quality of life and treatment effect of patients.

Development of prediction models for carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae acquisition and prognosis in adult patients

ObjectivesTo explore the risk factors and clinical outcomes of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infection and establish nomograms to predict the probability of CRKP infection and mortality in adult patients.MethodsPatients infected with KP from August 2019 to April 2021 in a tertiary hospital in Shanghai were enrolled. Risk factors associated with CRKP and 30-day mortality were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis and Cox regression analysis.ResultsOverall, 467 patients with KP infection were enrolled, wherein 210 (45.0%) patients were infected with CRKP and 257 (55.0%) patients with carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumoniae (CSKP). Five factors, namely Charlson’s Comorbidity Index (CCI) ≥ 3, the use of central venous catheterization, prior hospitalization during the 3 months before infection, and previous exposure to carbapenems and broad-spectrum β-lactams, were found to be independently associated with CRKP infection. Based on these parameters, the nomogram showed a better performance as indicated by C-index of 0.94 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.92–0.96) and well-fitted calibration curves. CRKP was independently associated with 30-day mortality. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that age ≥65 years, higher CCI scores, higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores, the presence of respiratory failure, albumin levels ≤30 g/L, and non-appropriate treatments in 3 days, were associated with 30-day mortality.ConclusionThe predictive nomogram established in this study can facilitate the clinicians to make better clinical decisions when treating patients with KP infection.

Human exposure to respiratory aerosols: Impact of ventilation rates, mixing ventilation configuration, and breathing patterns

This study investigates airborne transmission dynamics between occupants in office rooms equipped with mixing ventilation (MV). The primary aim was to assess how different ventilation configurations, air change rates (ACH), breathing patterns, and supply air temperatures influence cross-exposure and infection risks. The experimental setup involved two thermal manikins simulating an infected and an exposed occupant within a climate chamber. The investigated parameters included four ACH levels (1.2, 2, 4 and 6.6 h⁻1, representing four EN 16798-1 ventilation categories), two MV configurations (near-ceiling and near-floor inlets), two breathing patterns (nose and mouth breathing), and two supply air temperatures (19°C and 21°C). Carbon dioxide (CO₂) was used as a tracer gas to simulate exhaled aerosols, enabling precise measurements of effectiveness (), intake fraction (IF), and infection probability (P). The findings indicate that higher ACH do not uniformly improve but are linked to reduced cross-exposure risk. The near-floor inlet MV configuration significantly outperformed the near-ceiling configuration in reducing IF and P by 15-41% under most investigated scenarios. Additionally, mouth breathing increased IF and P compared to nose breathing, especially at higher ACH (2, 4, and 6.6 h⁻1). The results also showed that lower supply temperatures do not always correlate with higher IF and P, as MV configuration and breathing patterns significantly influence outcomes. This research provides insights into optimizing ventilation strategies for safer indoor environments, emphasizing the importance of airflow dynamics, breathing patterns, and supply temperature in ventilation design.

Rapid Decision Algorithm for Patient Triage during Ebola Outbreaks.

The low specificity of Ebola virus disease clinical signs increases the risk for nosocomial transmission to patients and healthcare workers during outbreaks. Reducing this risk requires identifying patients with a high likelihood of Ebola virus infection. Analyses of retrospective data from patients suspected of having Ebola virus infection identified 13 strong predictors and time from disease onset as constituents of a prediction score for Ebola virus disease. We also noted 4 highly predictive variables that could distinguish patients at high risk for infection, independent of their scores. External validation of this algorithm on retrospective data revealed the probability of infection continuously increased with the score.

Seroprevalence and associated risk factors for Fasciola hepatica in sheep in Nile Delta of Egypt

Fascioliasis is a globally distributed zoonotic parasitic disease that affects ruminants, including sheep. This study conducted from January to December 2023, aimed to determine the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in sheep across three governorates in Egypt's Nile Delta and to assess associated risk factors. A total of 455 serum samples were analyzed using a commercial ELISA kit, revealing antibodies against F. hepatica in 22.2 % of the tested sheep. There was no significant association between locality or sex and the seroprevalence of F. hepatica in sheep; however, the highest prevalence was observed in Kafr Sheikh and in female sheep.Concerning risk factors, poor conditioned sheep aged between 1 and 2 years showed 2.1 and 3.8 times higher of infection probability than others. In addition, the risk of F. hepatica infection in sheep increased significantly in winter season (OR = 6.6, 95 %CI: 2.6–16.8), in absence of prophylactic treatment (OR = 2.2, 95 %CI: 1.3–3.3) and in presence of snail (OR = 3, 95 %CI: 3–5.4). The existence of antibodies against F. hepatica in examined sheep raising in Nile Delta indicating that the disease is reported in the studied areas and needs to be managed on farms through control and preventative measures.

Risk ranking of microbial hazards from consumption of ready-to-eat fresh produce (RTEFP)

The consumption of contaminated Ready-To-Eat Fresh Produce (RTEFP), especially minimally processed leafy green vegetables and fruits, is increasingly recognised as a source of foodborne illnesses, posing a significant safety risk to human health. RTEFP can become contaminated with enteric foodborne pathogens via different sources. Water used during the pre-harvest (irrigation) and post-harvest (washing water) has been identified as a potentially important transmission route for foodborne pathogens entering horticultural crops. The objective of the present study was to (i) evaluate human exposure to indicator microorganisms, which may act as a surrogate to assess potential exposure to harmful pathogens, and (ii) create a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) to assess the human health safety risks (infection or illness) from foodborne pathogens following the application of treated irrigation (sprinkler) water to RTEFP and assess potential microbial intake through the consumption of RTEFP grown on irrigated land. A QMRA based on published literature was constructed to analyse microbial daily/annual risk to foodborne enteric pathogens associated with consuming ready-to-eat fresh produce. The likelihood of exposure to target pathogens was determined using different model parameters. The results show that the pathogens were prioritised as Shigella spp., Cryptosporidium parvum, Salmonella spp., Giardia lamblia based on probability of illness and Campylobacter spp., norovirus, adenovirus and rotavirus based on probability of infection. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the consumption of RTE fresh produce and cumulative decay constant of pathogens are the most sensitive parameters of the QMRA model, followed by the initial concentration of pathogens, chlorine treatment, growth on shelves, and finally, the effect of cold storage. This study highlighted that chlorine used pre and post-harvest was an effective remedial measure to assist food safety. The study highlights the need for risk-benefit in balancing potential chemical (chlorine) human exposure and the benefits of reduced microbial loads on RTEFP.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Nurses and Midwives towards Hepatitis B Infection and Control Measures in Alban Gaded Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan

Purpose: Infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes severe morbidity and death, burdening world health. Nurses and midwives, among other healthcare professionals, are more likely to contract the illness. Few studies have looked at the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of healthcare professionals in Sudan with regard to HBV infection, despite the fact that diverse components of KAP have an impact on health-related behaviors. This study's objective was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) level of nurses and midwives concerning HBV viral infection in, Khartoum, Sudan.  Methods: In the Sudanese state of Khartoum, a public hospital (Alban Gaded Hospital) underwent a cross-sectional descriptive hospital-based study. To assess KAP's understanding of nurses and midwives about HBV infection. Self-administered questionnaires were used and approved by the supervisor for distribution to the population chosen for the study. The data was handed over to the Medical Director whom personally ensured the questionnaires were signed and filled by the Healthcare workers (HCWs) of the chosen criteria at the field. A member of group (23:B) took care of the supervision aside with the medical director, and made sure the data was collected as needed. The data at hand were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 24.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences).  Results: 95 samples out of 99 were collected. According to participants’ knowledge: 67.95% have good knowledge about HBV, while 32.05% lack basic knowledge about it. The participants’ attitude towards HBV is above average showing 60.3% safe attitude. Lastly, the study shows excellent practice of the participants’ behavior towards HBV safety measures with a score of 92.3% safe practice. From the hospital, a total of 95 out of 99 nurses and midwives took part in the study. Two thirds of the respondents practiced safety, and the majority of respondents had a positive attitude about HBV preventative measures. More than half of the respondents (58.2%) had an average level of understanding. A minor but serious score of (12.6%) was noticed of the individuals, dealing with patients without wearing gloves. More over half of the nurses and midwives were not vaccinated against HBV; more than 50% of participants had incorrect ideas regarding the symptoms and route of HBV infection and all 95 participants voted (NO) for ever being infected by HBV.  Conclusion: In Alban Gaded hospital, the majority of the nurses and midwives were aware of HBV infection. But a sizeable majority of the participants lacked the necessary understanding of early immunization after birth. The study found a probability of high risk infection due to exposure under the poor level of HBV vaccine coverage rate. Moreover a clear point of limitation was noticed in Table 4 third question, where it asks whether you are or ever was infected by HBV. All the participants denied, showing a sense of partiality. Further occupational exposure prevention measures, training programs on HBV infection, including post-exposure prophylaxis, and increasing the vaccination rate of all HCWS are also strongly encouraged.

Analysis of Clinical Application of Minimally Invasive Technique in Alveolar Surgery

Objective To explore the clinical effect of minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of alveolar surgery. Methods 80 patients who underwent dental surgery from March 2023 to March 2024 were selected as study samples and randomly divided into two groups. The control group (40 cases) underwent the traditional extraction method, and the observation group (40 cases) underwent the minimally invasive technique. The integrity rate of tooth extraction, pain rate, postoperative infection rate and treatment effect were compared between the two groups. Results The integrity rate of tooth extraction, pain rate and postoperative infection rate in observation group were lower than those in control group (P < 0.05). The therapeutic effect of observation group was significantly higher than that of control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Minimally invasive technique has a significant effect in the treatment of alveolar surgery, which can reduce the degree of pain and the probability of infection and improve the integrity of the alveolar.

Vulnerability of Southern Hemisphere bats to white-nose syndrome based on global analysis of fungal host specificity and cave temperatures.

White-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease affecting hibernating bats, is caused by the fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). Since the initial introduction of Pd from Eurasia to the United States in 2006, WNS has killed millions of bats throughout the temperate parts of North America. There is concern that if Pd is accidentally introduced to the Southern Hemisphere, WNS could pose similar threats to the bat fauna of the Southern Hemisphere's more temperate regions. Efforts are required to better understand the vulnerability of bats globally to WNS. We examined phylogenetic distances among cave roosting bat species globally to estimate the probability of infection by Pd. We predicted cave thermal suitability for Pd for 441 cave-roosting bat species across the globe via spatial analysis. We used host specificity models based on 65 species tested for Pd to determine phylogenetic specificity of Pd. Phylogenetic distance was not an important predictor of Pd infection, confirming that Pd has low host specificity. We found extensive areas (i.e., South America, Africa, and Australia) in the Southern Hemisphere with caves that were suitable for cave-roosting bat species and for Pd growth. Hence, if Pd spreads to the Southern Hemisphere, the risk of exposure is widespread for cave-roosting bats, and infection is possible regardless of relatedness to infected species in the Northern Hemisphere. Predicting the consequences of infection remains difficult due to lack of species-specific information about bat winter biology. Nevertheless, WNS is an important threat to naive Southern Hemisphere bat populations. Hence, biosecurity measures and planning of management responses that can help prevent or minimize a potential WNS outbreak in the Southern Hemisphere are urgently needed.

Can the infection risk in elevators be negligible? A comparative study of airborne infection probability in elevators and conference rooms

People in crowded and poorly ventilated elevators are at risk of respiratory infection. However, due to the short duration of the elevator ride, the transmission of respiratory diseases in elevators does not get enough attention. To evaluate the infection risk, this study investigated the airborne transmission of respiratory diseases in the hospital elevator by comparison to the conference room. A validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was adopted to simulate airflow, temperature and tracer gas dispersion in the elevator and conference room. We used Wells-Riley model to evaluate the infection probability of the susceptible persons. In addition, the influences of source patient posture and ventilation strategy on the transmission of tracer gas were analyzed. The results showed that the infection probability in the elevator with 5 min (average 2.70%) was higher than that in the conference room with 50 min (average 1.77%). The effects of source patient posture and ventilation strategy on the infection probability in the elevator were more significant than those in the conference room. Local air circulation could gather the tracer gas inside a confined space in the elevator and led to a high infection probability. The infection risk of respiratory diseases in the elevator was non-negligible.

Tapeworm infection affects sleep-like behavior in three-spined sticklebacks

Sleep is a complex and conserved biological process that affects several body functions and behaviors. Evidence suggests that there is a reciprocal interaction between sleep and immunity. For instance, fragmented sleep can increase the probability of parasitic infections and reduce the ability to fight infections. Moreover, viral and bacterial infections alter the sleep patterns of infected individuals. However, the effects of macro-parasitic infections on sleep remain largely unknown, and measuring sleep in non-model organisms remains challenging. In this study, we investigated whether macro-parasite infections could alter sleep-like behavior of their hosts. We experimentally infected three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a freshwater fish, with the tapeworm Schistocephalus solidus and used a hidden Markov model to characterize sleep-like behavior in sticklebacks. One to four days after parasite exposure, infected fish showed no difference in sleep-like behavior compared with non-exposed fish, and fish that were exposed-but-not-infected only showed a slight reduction in sleep-like behavior during daytime. Twenty-nine to 32 days after exposure, infected fish showed more sleep-like behavior than control fish, while exposed-but-not-infected fish showed overall less sleep-like behavior. Using brain transcriptomics, we identified immune- and sleep-associated genes that potentially underlie the observed behavioral changes. These results provide insights into the complex association between macro-parasite infection, immunity, and sleep in fish and may thus contribute to a better understanding of reciprocal interactions between sleep and immunity.

Molecular study of some vector–borne diseases in cattle raised in western Türkiye

Unfortunately, global warming, especially the global climate crisis, increases the rate of vector–borne infections. Among the causes of this infection are microorganisms in the Rickettsiales Order, which are Gram–negative and small coccobacillus microorganisms that can multiply within host cells and are dependent on their metabolism, in addition to bacterial infections, protozoa such as Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. are transmitted through vectors and cause serious diseases in animals. This study aimed to investigate the presence of some vector–borne bacterial and protozoan microorganisms in blood samples taken from cattle raised in Mugla province, located in the West of Türkiye, and to reveal relevant disease data for the region. In this study, blood samples taken from 100 cattle were examined using molecular methods. While Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected in 15 blood samples (15%), Anaplasma ovis agent was detected in eight samples (8%). Anaplasma bovis agent (1%) was identified in only one blood sample. In the samples examined within the scope of the study, Ehrlichia and Rickettsia species from bacteria and Theileria spp. and Babesia spp. from parasitic agents could not be detected. Mugla province, located west of Türkiye, has a subtropical dry summer climate, so the probability of infections transmitted through arthropods is high. Since the agents are transmitted through ticks, conducting more studies on vector–borne diseases is essential. This includes mapping the region’s vector ticks and determining and evaluating the tick carrier and disease maps in cattle. The data obtained is thought to help create regional and national vector–borne disease maps.

The influence of temperature and β-1,3-glucans on the occurrence of white spot syndrome virus and white spot disease in post-larvae of Penaeus vannamei shrimp

Penaeus vannamei is the main species of shrimp farmed worldwide, and for Ecuador it is the first non-oil economic sector. However, various pathogens, including white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), threaten the sustainability of shrimp farming. P. vannamei larvae are susceptible to WSSV infection via vertical or horizontal transmission. To decrease the incidence of WSSV in PLs, a bioassay was performed by exposing P. vannamei shrimp (PL25), which were negative for WSSV and white spot disease (WSD), to two protective factors, water temperature (T = 24 °C and T = 31 °C), and immunestimulation using β-1,3-glucans (BG) (with and without BG added to the food), using a crossed two-factor design, for 20 days. The incidence of WSSV and WSD was modeled using generalized linear model (GLM). The strength of the association between the response and explanatory variables was estimated using the odds ratio [Exp (Beta)] and interpreted as the level of risk for the incidence of WSSV or WSD in one of the categories compared to the baseline category in the GLM. Odds ratios were considered significant if their 95 % confidence interval did not include the value 1. The results showed that BG had a significant negative effect on the number of WSSV-positive animals. In addition, a lower probability of WSSV infection was determined by combining 31 °C and BG. In this treatment, the WSD injuries were almost undetectable. Most larvae shrimps affected by WSD exhibited injuries to the antennal gland and connective tissue. In situ hybridization analysis revealed that 29 % of shrimp, initially negative by histology, were positive for WSSV. The virus was detected mainly in the nervous tissue of the head, epithelium, connective tissue of the head appendages, and the oral region surrounding the integumental glands. Apoptosis analysis showed a weak signal in nerve tissue but was more intense in epithelial cells of the head appendages, in association with cuticular damage. According to the findings, WSSV could disseminate among shrimp populations by infecting them through the TG and epithelium of the head appendage, followed by connective tissue and nervous tissue. However, applying BG at 31 °C may serve as a protective measure to reduce WSD injuries and restrict WSSV dissemination.

Prevalence of antibiotic-resistant enterobacteriaceae in domestic wastewater and associated health risks in reuse practices

The use of wastewater for non-potable purposes is an important alternative for addressing water scarcity, especially in developing regions. However, minimizing the risks, particularly those associated with emerging contaminants that may induce resistance among pathogens in wastewater, is crucial. This study assessed the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in untreated wastewater used for agricultural purposes and evaluated the quantifiable health risks associated with this practice in Tamale, Ghana. The resistance of some Enterobacteriaceae, such as E. coli, Klebsiella, and Salmonella-Shigella, to four commonly used antibiotics in Ghana was assessed using a conventional microbiological culture approach and the Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method. A Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) was performed to estimate the health risks associated with two distinct scenarios of wastewater reuse: (1) accidental ingestion of contaminated wastewater and soil, and (2) consumption of vegetables irrigated with wastewater. This approach applied a Monte Carlo simulation based on 10,000 interactions and identified E. coli O157:H7 as the reference pathogen. Among Enterobacteriaceae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella-Shigella and E. coli were isolated, in concentrations exceeding the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (103 CFU/100 ml). All the isolated bacteria were resistant to metronidazole (5 μg). Thirty-three per cent of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were intermediate/moderately susceptible, and all other bacteria were resistant to amoxicillin (30 μg). All Klebsiella pneumoniae and the majority of Salmonella-Shigella (69.8 %) isolates were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (25 μg) and tetracycline (30 μg). When assessing health risks, the mean annual probability of infection associated with consuming vegetables irrigated with wastewater varied between 5.14 × 10−2 and 9.79 × 10−1 per person per year. Conversely, for the accidental ingestion scenario, the probability was 1.00 per person per year. In these scenarios, the probability of illness ranged from 1.29 × 10−2 to 2.4 × 10−1 and 2.5 × 10−1 per person per year. The health risks posed by these findings surpass the maximum threshold prescribed by the World Health Organization, thereby emphasizing the need for prompt mitigation strategies.

Network-based virus dynamic simulation: Evaluating the fomite disinfection effectiveness on SARS-CoV-2 transmission in indoor environment

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is involved in aerosol particles and droplets excreted from a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient. Such aerosol particles or droplets including infectious virions can be attached on fomite, so fomite is not a negligible route for SARS-CoV-2 transmission within a community, especially in indoor environment. This necessarily evokes a need of fomite disinfection to remove virions, but the extent to which fomite disinfection breaks off virus transmission chain in indoor environment is still elusive. In this study, we evaluated the fomite disinfection effectiveness on COVID-19 case number using network analysis that reproduced the reported indoor outbreaks. In the established network, virus can move around not only human but also air and fomite while growing in human and decaying in air and on fomite, and infection success was determined based on the exposed virus amount and the equation of probability of infection. The simulation results have demonstrated that infectious virions on fomite should be kept less than a hundred to sufficiently reduce COVID-19 case, and every-hour disinfection was required to avoid stochastic increase in the infection case. This study gives us a practical disinfection manner for fomite to control SARS-CoV-2 transmission in indoor environment.

Diverse Relationships between Batrachochytrium Infections and Antimicrobial Peptide Defenses Across Leopard Frog Populations.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a fundamental role in the innate defense against microbial pathogens, as well as other immune and non-immune functions. Their role in amphibian skin defense against the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is exemplified by experiments in which depletion of host's stored AMPs increases mortality from infection. Yet, the question remains whether there are generalizable patterns of negative or positive correlations between stored AMP defenses and the probability of infection or infection intensity across populations and species. This study aims to expand on prior field studies of AMP quantities and compositions by correlating stored defenses with an estimated risk of Bd exposure (prevalence and mean infection intensity in each survey) in five locations across the United States and a total of three species. In all locations, known AMPs correlated with the ability of recovered secretions to inhibit Bd in vitro. We found that stored AMP defenses were generally unrelated to Bd infection except in one location where the relative intensity of known AMPs was lower in secretions from infected frogs. In all other locations, known AMP relative intensities were higher in infected frogs. Stored peptide quantity was either positively or negatively correlated with Bd exposure risk. Thus, future experiments coupled with organismal modeling can elucidate whether Bd infection affects secretion/synthesis and will provide insight into how to interpret amphibian ecoimmunology studies of AMPs. We also demonstrate that future AMP isolating and sequencing studies can focus efforts by correlating mass spectrometry peaks to inhibitory capacity using linear decomposition modeling.

This study aimed to provide new insights into the management of Alternaria rot and Colletotrichum dieback in mandarins. Field trials were conducted to evaluate the impact of bloom sprays on latent infections, disease progression, and the influence of bloom inoculations on disease development. Detached citrus leaves were used to assess the efficacy of commercial fungicides in reducing infections by Colletotrichum spp. C. karstii was more sensitive than C. gloeosporioides, as evidenced by the overall probabilities of infection. Preventative treatments containing QoI fungicides, such as Pristine, Quadris Top, and Luna Sensation, consistently reduced infections. Curative treatments with Pristine and Luna Sensation also demonstrated efficacy. Bloom inoculations with Colletotrichum species did not induce visible symptoms on flowers and twigs, nor did they lead to dieback until harvest, suggesting that bloom infections may not play a significant role in the disease cycle. For Alternaria, the frequency of latent infections in flowers increased significantly during the bloom period. Shoots inoculated with Alternaria species during bloom reduced the number of fruits per shoot at harvest. Fungicide treatments during bloom exhibited a dual effect, reducing Alternaria infections in fruitlets and influencing disease progression, ultimately reducing preharvest fruit drop. This study provides valuable insights into the role of flower infections in the development of Alternaria rot and Colletotrichum dieback in California mandarins. Furthermore, it offers insights into the efficacy of commercial fungicides in these pathosystems.

Whole genome characteristics of hedgehog coronaviruses from Poland and analysis of the evolution of the Spike protein for its interspecies transmission potential

BackgroundThe hedgehogs have been recently identified as possible reservoir of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus like (MERS-CoV-like). These viruses were classified as a distinct Betacoronavirus erinacei (BCoV-Eri) species within the MerBCoV-Eriirus subgenus. As coronaviruses are known for their ability to jump between different hosts, including humans, this can pose a particular threat to people in direct contact with hedgehogs, such as those working at animal asylums. Our previous studies have shown the presence of BCoV-Eri strains in animals collected in the wildlife rehabilitation centre. This study aimed to investigate the presence of CoV in subsequent hedgehogs collected from the urban area of Poland and their molecular characteristics.ResultsMonitoring for the presence of coronavirus infection in hedgehogs revealed five positive individuals. The presence of BCoV-Eri was found in a total of 20% of animals tested. Our analyses revealed no correlation between CoVs positivity and animal health conditions but a higher probability of such infection in juveniles and females. The whole genome of two Polish Hedgehog coronavirus 1 strains were sequenced and compared with available counterparts from European and Asian countries. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both CoV strains formed common cluster with other similar MerBCoV-Eriirus, but they were also found to be genetically variable and most changes in the S protein were identified. Our analysis revealed that some S protein sites of the Hedgehog coronavirus 1 strains evolved under positive selection pressure and of five such sites, three are in the S1 region while the other two in the S2 region of the Spike.ConclusionsBCoV-Eri is to some extent prevalent in wildlife asylums in Poland. Given that the S protein of BCoVs-Eri is highly variable and that some sites of this protein evolve under positive selection pressure, these strains could potentially acquire a favourable feature for cross-species transmission. Consequently, the threat to humans working in such asylums is particularly high. Adequate biosecurity safeguards, but also human awareness of such risks, are therefore essential.

Association between non-injection drug use and hepatitis C infection among HIV-negative men who have sex with men

BackgroundPrior research predominantly examined the association between HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) or those using injection drugs and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, limited attention has been given to understanding the association among HIV-negative MSM who do not inject drugs. This gap leaves apportion of the population unexamined, potentially overlooking important factor that may contribute to the transmission and prevalence of HCV. This study aims to investigate the relationship between non-injection drug use and HCV infection in this population.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data on 118 MSM who reported use of non-injection drugs. The participants were recruited from two inner-city communities in Houston, TX, between 2004 and 2007 and were negative for both HIV and hepatitis B virus infection. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify drug use latent classes. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between drug use latent class and HCV infection.ResultsFour distinct latent classes of drug use were identified: class 1, persons ≥ 42 years of age who used only crack cocaine; class 2, persons approximately 42 years of age who used > 2 drugs; class 3, persons < 42 years of age who used > 5 drugs; and class 4, persons ≥ 42 years of age who used > 6 drugs. Class 4 was significantly associated with HCV infection. The odds of HCV infection in members of class 4 was 17 times higher than in class 2 members (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 16.9, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.4–205.4) and almost 22 times higher than in class 3 members (aOR = 21.8, 95% CI: 1.5–322.8).ConclusionsAmong MSM with non-injection drug use, the subgroup of individuals who were ≥ 42 years of age and used multiple drugs (including heroin, speedball, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and marijuana) had a high probability of HCV infection. Public health and education programs, as well as drug treatment and rehabilitation programs, should be developed for this high-risk subgroup of individuals to prevent HCV acquisition and transmission.
