Investigation of Presumptive HIV Transmission Associated with Receipt of Platelet-Rich Plasma Microneedling Facials at a Spa Among Former Spa Clients - New Mexico, 2018-2023.

HIV transmitted through cosmetic injection services via contaminated blood has not been previously documented. During summer 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) was notified of a diagnosis of HIV infection in a woman with no known HIV risk factors who reported exposure to needles from cosmetic platelet-rich plasma microneedling facials (vampire facials) received at a spa in spring 2018. An investigation of the spa's services began in summer 2018, and NMDOH and CDC identified four former spa clients, and one sexual partner of a spa client, all of whom received HIV infection diagnoses during 2018-2023, despite low reported behavioral risks associated with HIV acquisition. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed highly similar HIV strains among all cases. Although transmission of HIV via unsterile injection practices is a known risk, determining novel routes of HIV transmission among persons with no known HIV risk factors is important. This investigation identified an HIV cluster associated with receipt of cosmetic injection services at an unlicensed facility that did not follow recommended infection control procedures or maintain client records. Requiring adequate infection control practices and maintenance of client records at spa facilities offering cosmetic injection services can help prevent the transmission of HIV and other bloodborne pathogens and ensure adequate traceback and notification in the event of adverse clinical outcomes, respectively.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Infection Control Among Dental Students at College of Dentistry - Hawler Medical University.

Background: Infections acquired in healthcare facilities have become an increasingly challenging issue worldwide. The prevention of infectious diseases is a critical issue since healthcare workers develop acquired infections while providing services to patients. However, infection prevention and control are challenging, especially in healthcare facilities. Objective: To assess knowledge, attitude, and practice of cross-infection control among dental students at the College of Dentistry, Hawler Medical University. Material and Method: A survey was conducted to obtain information regarding knowledge, attitude, and practice with recommended infection control guidelines. The questionnaire contained three parts (knowledge, attitude, and practice) and was distributed to the participants. Result: Total number of participants was 135, (73) were 5th-year dental students, and (62) 4th year, the mean age of participants was (20-23) years, 96 % had correct knowledge about infection control, 93 % had a correct practice, but unfortunately 48 % had low attitude. Conclusions: The majority of dental students had good knowledge and correct practice, but less about their attitude in infection control. Therefore, regular training that contains educational programs should be supported to maintain the highest level of attitude. Reading Comprehension in the Medical Education Curriculum during the covid 19: A global Perspective

The coronavirus caused the global effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in early 2020. Due to the emergence of various infectious illnesses, it is essential for medical students to possess the skills to investigate and treat them. Therefore, it is essential for medical students to peruse the materials provided by the World Health Organisation in order to get a comprehensive understanding of the many symptoms associated with the recently emerged illness, as well as the need for early detection and prevention. Hence, the objective of this study is to emphasise the significance of medical students engaging with novel sources of information and how their proficiency in doing so, whether effective or ineffective, is contingent upon their reading comprehension strategies. Many medical students globally lack sufficient understanding of the recommended infection control practices. Their reading impairments also hindered their comprehension of their medical condition, resulting in delayed diagnosis and inadequate use of preventive medications. The study findings show that, due to the limited scope of medical education programmes, the curriculum for medical colleges did not provide comprehensive instruction on reading comprehension techniques. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive academic literacy training for medical research in these curricula. Thus, anyone pursuing a medical education should acquire knowledge by studying the resources provided by the World Health Organisation.

Infection Control Practices in Dental Clinics and Dental Care Settings during COVID - 19's Spread: A Comprehensive Review

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by a novel coronavirus, known as severe acute respiratory syndrome. Dental care units and settings face various problems relating to the transmission of disease during treatment and dental operations. The degree to which the healthcare system is ready affects how well coronavirus illness is managed. Blood, saliva, and mixed water droplets possessing the virus cause contamination of equipment used for dental treatment. Both patients and workers may become transmitters and infectors of COVID-19 through direct contact during dental operations. It is possible for dental professionals and patients to contract COVID-19 and spread it to others. The dental care routine is very effective as we discussed below the prevention steps are very effective. All healthcare workers at the dentistry clinics should collaborate to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus among patients. The primary aim is to make dental health care providers aware of the pathophysiology of COVID-19 and to increase their preparedness and understanding of this challenge, which will aid in controlling transmission. The information and data that collected will be useful for the dental community in providing effective patient management through evidence-based recommendations for infection control and disinfection protocols.

Preventing iatrogenic HCV infection: A quantitative risk assessment based on observational data in an Egyptian hospital.

When compliance with infection control recommendations is non-optimal, hospitals may play an important role in hepatitis C (HCV) transmission. However, few studies have analyzed the nosocomial HCV acquisition risk based on detailed empirical data. Here, we used data from a prospective cohort study conducted on 500 patients in the Ain Shams hospital (Cairo, Egypt) in 2017 with the objective of identifying (i) high-risk patient profiles and (ii) transmission hotspots within the hospital. Data included information on patient HCV status upon admission, their trajectories between wards and the invasive procedures they underwent. We first performed a sequence analysis to identify different hospitalization profiles. Second, we estimated each patient's individual risk of HCV acquisition based on ward-specific prevalence and procedures undergone, and risk hotspots by computing ward-level risks. Then, using a beta regression model, we evaluated upon-admission factors linked to HCV acquisition risk and built a score estimating the risk of HCV infection during hospitalization based on these factors. Finally, we assessed and compared ward-focused and patient-focused HCV control strategies. The sequence analysis based on patient trajectories allowed us to identify four distinct patient trajectory profiles. The risk of HCV infection was greater in the internal medicine department, compared to the surgery department (0·188% [0·142%-0·235%] vs. 0·043%, CI 95%: [0·036%-0·050%]), with risk hotspots in the geriatric, tropical medicine and intensive-care wards. Upon-admission risk predictors included source of admission, age, reason for hospitalization, and medical history. Interventions focused on the most at-risk patients were most effective to reduce HCV infection risk. Our results might help reduce the risk of HCV acquisition during hospitalization in Egypt by targeting enhanced control measures to ward-level transmission hotspots and to at-risk patients identified upon admission.

Awareness and application of infection control recommendations in the private practice of Iraqi dentists

Infection control rules are extremely important in dental office because dangerous infections can be passed on to the dental health workers or the patient during treatment, the aim of this study was to assess the awareness and knowledge of a group of Iraqi dentists regarding application of infection control rules in their private practice , data was collected by an interview with the study group (35 dentists) to fill a questionnaire. Results showed that many of the infection control measures were inadequately applied, leading to a conclusion that training in both educational and practical fields is required to improve the knowledge related to infection control measures.

Targeting average length of hospital stay as a control measure to decrease COVID-19 hospital-acquired infection in surgical cancer patients

BackgroundThe global spread of coronaviruses had a great impact on the economic and social situation of most countries. As the backbone of any society, the health sector made a significant contribution through applying emergency risk management plans in order to control the pandemic. Monitoring the average length of hospital stay (ALOS) was an effective way to release the capacity of the health system during this time. The aim was to evaluate the effect of applying risk assessment/management strategies on ALOS and the impact of this ALOS on COVID-19 infection rates among cancer patients.MethodsThis is a prospective cohort study. All admitted cancer patients in 6 surgical departments from January to June 2021 were included.ResultsA total of 1287 patients were admitted to 6 surgical departments during the selected period. About 46% of them had surgery (n = 578), while 54% did not have surgery (n = 700). Among surgical patients, admission rates were highest in February and head and neck department (24% and 22.1%, respectively), and lowest in April and chest department (12.4% and 8%, respectively). ALOS was significantly different across the 6 months (p value < 0.001) with lower ALOS in (April, May, and June) than in (January–February, and March). No significant difference was found across the 6 surgical departments (p value = 0.423). Twenty-eight patients became COVID-19 positive after admission, 25 of them (89%) were infected from March to June—during the time of the third wave—and a significant decreasing linear trend (p value = 0.009) was found.ConclusionALOS had significantly reduced with commitment to infection control (IC) interventions and recommendations. The significant decreasing trend of COVID-19 infection from March to June (unlike the rising curve of the 3rd COVID-19 wave by that time) could be explained by improvement in ALOS.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clusters in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and other neonatal units in New York State (NYS), 2001 to 2017

New York State (NYS) mandates reporting of all hospital-associated communicable disease outbreaks. We describe trends in NYS surveillance for neonatal unit methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreaks, the evolution of national MRSA infection prevention and control (IPC) recommendations, and IPC measures taken by NYS neonatal units. We evaluated trends of reported neonatal unit MRSA outbreaks by etiology from 2001 to 2017. We reviewed all reports and the use of IPC recommendations over time. From 2001 to 2017, 124 MRSA outbreaks were reported in 47 hospital neonatal units, with a total of 1,055 laboratory-confirmed infant cases, 18 infant deaths, and 52 laboratory-confirmed staff cases. The number of outbreaks increased with the level of care. During the study period, a higher proportion of hospitals reported implementing IPC measures, including reinforcing hand hygiene compliance (increased from 79.2% to 95.1%) and enhancing environmental cleaning and disinfection (increased from 4.2% to 78.0%) as well as performing active surveillance testing (AST) on exposed neonates (increased from 4.2% to 51.2%) and molecular testing on MRSA-positive isolates (increased from 5.3% to 18.9%). From 2001 to 2017, IPC measures in neonatal units increased in parallel with expanded national IPC recommendations. However, MRSA outbreaks in neonatal units continued to be frequent occurrences in NYS.

Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine response and immunogenicity assessment after one week and three months in repeatedly vaccinated adults

ABSTRACTBackgroundThe influenza vaccine administrated every year is a recommended infection control procedure for individuals above the age of six months. However, the effectiveness of repeated annual vaccination is still an active research topic. Therefore, we investigated the vaccine immunogenicity in two independent groups: previously vaccinated versus non-vaccinated individuals at three time points; prior vaccination, one week and three months post vaccination. The assessment enabled us to evaluate the elicited immune responses and the durability of the induced protection in both groups.Research Design and MethodsA research study was conducted to assess the immunogenicity of a single dose of Trivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine (A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and B) in 278 healthy adults aged between 32 and 66 years. Almost half of the participants, 140 (50·36%), received influenza vaccination at least once precursor to past influenza seasons. One blood sample was taken prior to vaccination for complete blood analysis and baseline immunogenicity assessment. The selected study participants received a single vaccine dose on the first day, and then followed up for three months. Two blood samples were taken after one week and three months post vaccination, respectively, for vaccine immunogenicity assessment.ResultsBefore vaccination, the seroprotection, defined as a hemagglutination-inhibiting titer of =>1:40, was detected for the three vaccine virus strains in 20 previously vaccinated participants (14·29%) [8·95%, 21·2%]. We compared the overall vaccine response for the three virus strains using a normalized response score calculated from linearly transformed titer measurements; the score before vaccination was 84% higher in the previously vaccinated group and the mean difference between the two groups was statistically significant. Three months post-vaccination, we didn’t find a significant difference in vaccine responses; the number of fully seroprotected individuals became 48 (34·29%) [26·48%, 42·77%] in the previously vaccinated group and 59 (42·75%) [34·37%, 51·45%] in the non-vaccinated group. The calculated response score was almost equal in both groups and the mean difference was no longer statistically significant.ConclusionOur findings suggest that a single dose of influenza vaccine is equally protective after three months for annually vaccinated adults and first-time vaccine receivers.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Death Rates Among Maintenance Dialysis Patients During Delta and Early Omicron Waves - United States, June 30, 2021-September 27, 2022.

Persons receiving maintenance dialysis are at increased risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection and its severe outcomes, including death. However, rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related deaths in this population are not well described. Since November 2020, CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) has collected weekly data monitoring incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections (defined as a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result) and COVID-19-related deaths (defined as the death of a patient who had not fully recovered from a SARS-CoV-2 infection) among maintenance dialysis patients. This analysis used NHSN dialysis facility COVID-19 data reported during June 30, 2021-September 27, 2022, to describe rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related death among maintenance dialysis patients. The overall infection rate was 30.47 per 10,000 patient-weeks (39.64 among unvaccinated patients and 27.24 among patients who had completed a primary COVID-19 vaccination series). The overall death rate was 1.74 per 10,000 patient-weeks. Implementing recommended infection control measures in dialysis facilities and ensuring patients and staff members are up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccination is critical to limiting COVID-19-associated morbidity and mortality.

Supporting patients and their carers to participate in infection prevention and control activities: The views of patients, family members, and hospital staff from Bangladesh, Indonesia, and South Korea

Hand hygiene reminders for healthcare workers (HCWs) are commonly used to empower patients. However, this approach overlooks the role of family carers in delivering direct contact care in Asian countries. Limited knowledge exists regarding empowerment strategies for patients and their family carers in infection prevention and control (IPC) recommendations. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive exploration of IPC empowerment within the context of family involvement in care provision across Bangladesh, Indonesia, and South Korea. In-depth interviews were conducted in 5 tertiary-level hospitals in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and South Korea. A total of 64 participants were interviewed through 57 interviews, including 6 group interviews, comprising 2 groups: (1) patients and their family and private carers; and (2) HCWs. The study identified barriers to engaging patients and family carers in IPC measures. These included concerns about the patient-HCW hierarchical relationship, lack of knowledge about healthcare-associated infection, IPC, and patient zone, perceptions of IPC as a barrier to family connections, and disempowerment of patients in IPC due to family bonds. This study provides diverse perspectives on IPC empowerment, revealing challenges faced by patients, family carers, and HCWs. The interlaced relationship established by social norms of family carer provision hinders the empowerment of family carers. Acknowledging the cultural influence on health care arrangements and its implication for IPC empowerment is crucial in mitigating these barriers.

Combined Infection Control Interventions Protect Essential Food Workers from Occupational Exposures to SARS-CoV-2 in the Agricultural Environment.

Essential food workers experience elevated risks of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection due to prolonged occupational exposures in food production and processing areas, shared transportation (car or bus), and employer-provided shared housing. Our goal was to quantify the daily cumulative risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection for healthy susceptible produce workers and to evaluate the relative reduction in risk attributable to food industry interventions and vaccination. We simulated daily SARS-CoV-2 exposures of indoor and outdoor produce workers through six linked quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model scenarios. For each scenario, the infectious viral dose emitted by a symptomatic worker was calculated across aerosol, droplet, and fomite-mediated transmission pathways. Standard industry interventions (2-m physical distancing, handwashing, surface disinfection, universal masking, ventilation) were simulated to assess relative risk reductions from baseline risk (no interventions, 1-m distance). Implementation of industry interventions reduced an indoor worker's relative infection risk by 98.0% (0.020; 95% uncertainty interval [UI], 0.005 to 0.104) from baseline risk (1.00; 95% UI, 0.995 to 1.00) and an outdoor worker's relative infection risk by 94.5% (0.027; 95% UI, 0.013 to 0.055) from baseline risk (0.487; 95% UI, 0.257 to 0.825). Integrating these interventions with two-dose mRNA vaccinations (86 to 99% efficacy), representing a worker's protective immunity to infection, reduced the relative infection risk from baseline for indoor workers by 99.9% (0.001; 95% UI, 0.0002 to 0.005) and outdoor workers by 99.6% (0.002; 95% UI, 0.0003 to 0.005). Consistent implementation of combined industry interventions, paired with vaccination, effectively mitigates the elevated risks from occupationally acquired SARS-CoV-2 infection faced by produce workers. IMPORTANCE This is the first study to estimate the daily risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection across a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental settings relevant to food workers (e.g., shared transportation [car or bus], enclosed produce processing facility and accompanying breakroom, outdoor produce harvesting field, shared housing facility) through a linked quantitative microbial risk assessment framework. Our model has demonstrated that the elevated daily SARS-CoV-2 infection risk experienced by indoor and outdoor produce workers can be reduced below 1% when vaccinations (optimal vaccine efficacy, 86 to 99%) are implemented with recommended infection control strategies (e.g., handwashing, surface disinfection, universal masking, physical distancing, and increased ventilation). Our novel findings provide scenario-specific infection risk estimates that can be utilized by food industry managers to target high-risk scenarios with effective infection mitigation strategies, which was informed through more realistic and context-driven modeling estimates of the infection risk faced by essential food workers daily. Bundled interventions, particularly if they include vaccination, yield significant reductions (>99%) in daily SARS-CoV-2 infection risk for essential food workers in enclosed and open-air environments.

The Effectiveness of an Instructional Program on Nurses Knowledge and Practice Infection Control and the care of neonate

Analyze the impact of a newborn intensive care unit nurse education program on the nurses' infection control knowledge and practice. &#x0D; Theoretical/Probabilistic (pre-test and post-test for the study group). Both Al-Mussawi Hospital and Bint Al-Huda Maternity Hospital in Nasiriya city housed two of Nasiriya's pediatric hospitals for the research. A total of 50 nurses were included in the research. A questionnaire and a checklist were used to gather the data (to measure practice). Analyses of the data were carried out utilizing SPSS version 19 (SPSS). The knowledge of nurses was significantly different between the pre- and post-tests (P&lt; 0.05). 18 (36 %) of the nurses correctly answered the sterilization definition prior to attending the training, but 47 (94 %) correctly answered the definition after attending the program. Disinfectant, per dictionary definition After attending the session, 38 (78 %) of the nurses gave the proper definition of disinfectant, compared to 14 (28 %) of the nurses gave the correct response before attending the program. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is considered a common precaution in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Before the program, the percentage of nurses who properly answered questions concerning standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in NICU care was lower than the increased percentage of nurses' answers following the course. After a pre- and post-test assessment, the mean value of nurses' replies to the first statement (definition of sterilization) was (0.69±0.48), which climbed to (0.89±0.32), with an enhanced understanding. A substantial difference in infection control behaviors was reported in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after the posttest compared to the pretest (P &lt; 0.05). &#x0D; Following the implementation of the program, the educational program had a considerable influence on the nurses' knowledge and practice abilities. &#x0D; It is possible to improve the quality of care for healthy and sick neonates, and administrators of hospitals should strive to create an organizational atmosphere in which adherence &#x0D; to recommended infection control practices is considered an integral part of providing high-quality care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). &#x0D;

Following the eradication of smallpox, intermittent small outbreaks of mpox (monkeypox) have occurred with increasing frequency, primarily in endemic regions of Africa. With the rapid spread of mpox around the globe in 2022, we are approaching a second zoonotic pandemic of the 21st century. Given the predominance of cutaneous involvement in mpox, dermatologists should be prepared to recognize the clinical features and manage this increasingly prevalent disease. This article reviews a brief history of the mpox virus, clinical presentation, complications, approach to diagnosis, methods of transmission, infection control recommendations, indications for vaccination, and therapeutic options to inform dermatologists on the frontline of the mpox epidemic.

Implementation, uptake and use of a digital COVID-19 symptom tracker in English care homes in the coronavirus pandemic: a mixed-methods, multi-locality case study

BackgroundCOVID-19 spread rapidly in UK care homes for older people in the early pandemic. National infection control recommendations included remote resident assessment. A region in North-West England introduced a digital COVID-19 symptom tracker for homes to identify early signs of resident deterioration to facilitate care responses. We examined the implementation, uptake and use of the tracker in care homes across four geographical case study localities in the first year of the pandemic.MethodsThis was a rapid, mixed-methods, multi-locality case study. Tracker uptake was calculated using the number of care homes taking up the tracker as a proportion of the total number of care homes in a locality. Mean tracker use was summarised at locality level and compared. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals involved in tracker implementation and used to explore implementation factors across localities. Template Analysis with the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) guided the interpretation of qualitative data.ResultsUptake varied across the four case study localities ranging between 13.8 and 77.8%.Tracker use decreased in all localities over time at different rates, with average use ranging between 18 and 58%. The implementation context differed between localities and the process of implementation deviated over time from the initially planned strategy, for stakeholder engagement and care homes’ training. Four interpretative themes reflected the most influential factors appearing to affect tracker uptake and use: (1) the process of implementation, (2) implementation readiness, (3) clarity of purpose/perceived value and (4) relative priority in the context of wider system pressures.ConclusionsOur study findings resonate with the digital solutions evidence base prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting three key factors that can inform future development and implementation of rapid digital responses in care home settings even in times of crisis: an incremental approach to implementation with testing of organisational readiness and attention to implementation climate, particularly the innovation’s fit with local contexts (i.e. systems, infrastructure, work processes and practices); involvement of end-users in innovation design and development; and enabling users’ easy access to sustained, high-quality, appropriate training and support to enable staff to adapt to digital solutions.

Evaluation of the characteristics of infection prevention and control programs and infection control committees in Brazilian hospitals: A countrywide cross-sectional study.

Data are scarce regarding hospital infection control committees and compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) recommendations in Brazil, a country of continental dimensions. We assessed the main characteristics of infection control committees (ICCs) on healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in Brazilian hospitals. This cross-sectional study was conducted in ICCs of public and private hospitals distributed across all Brazilian regions. Data were collected directly from the ICC staff by completing an online questionnaire and during on-site visits through face-to-face interviews. In total, 53 Brazilian hospitals were evaluated from October 2019 to December 2020. All hospitals had implemented the IPC core components in their programs. All centers had protocols for the prevention and control of ventilator-associated pneumonia as well as bloodstream, surgical site, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Most hospitals (80%) had no budget specifically allocated to the IPC program; 34% of the laundry staff had received specific IPC training; and only 7.5% of hospitals reported occupational infections in healthcare workers. In this sample, most ICCs complied with the minimum requirements for IPC programs. The main limitation regarding ICCs was the lack of financial support. The findings of this survey support the development of strategic plans to improve IPCs in Brazilian hospitals.

Candida auris: a novel emerging nosocomial pathogen - properties, epidemiological situation and infection control.

Immunosuppression and critical illnesses in combination with ecological imbalance open the door for novel opportunistic fungal infections, as in case of Candida (C). auris. C. auris has emerged globally as a multidrug-resistant yeast, causing infections and outbreaks in health care facilities. This narrative review discusses the properties of the yeast, the development of the epidemiological situation, the nosocomial spread and causes for nosocomial outbreaks triggered by C. auris in the hospital environment, and summarizes international recommendations for infection control, supplemented by suggestions on diagnostic, screening and antibiotic stewardship.

Perioperative Infection Control Recommendations during the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant Pandemic

<p class="MsoNormal"> COVID-19 significantly increased perioperative risks including mortality and complications. Currently, the Omicron variant is the dominant strain worldwide. Omicron variant is highly contagious with lower incidence of severe diseases.
