The foundation of India's economic growth, the textile sector, has experienced unheard-of growth in recent decades, along with a rise in environmental issues brought on by significant waste generation. This comprehensive study sets out to look into and analyze how waste management techniques are incorporated into the rich history of the Indian textile sector. The study offers a thorough review of current waste management techniques, environmental impact evaluations, and creative solutions influencing the path toward sustainability, bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative analysis. The introduction sets the context by outlining the mutually beneficial relationship between the expansion of the textile industry and its subsequent environmental load. The clothing industry has gained prominence due to the increase in demand for its products, however, a paradigm shift is required due to the waste generated by this industry. The study aims to perform a thorough analysis of waste management processes, conduct a quantitative assessment of the environmental implications, and investigate comprehensive strategies for sustainable waste management. The chapter on qualitative analysis explores the complex aspects of waste management in the textile industries of India. This section explains the nuances of waste generation at different phases of textile production by carefully examining existing methods, case studies, and industry dynamics. A thorough grasp of the qualitative landscape is revealed, encompassing everything from yarn and fabric waste to the difficulties presented by chemical residues and the disposal of end-of-life textiles. The importance of awareness and corporate responsibility in influencing waste management methods is also highlighted in this section. Case studies of top textile producers present creative approaches and offer insights into the possibilities of technological developments, cooperative efforts, and models of the circular economy. Nonetheless, difficulties ranging from technology constraints to cultural obstacles highlight how difficult it is to smoothly integrate sustainable practices throughout the sector. The chapter on integration strategies looks at potential directions that could change the way waste is managed in the textile industry in India. Models of the circular economy take center stage because they provide a comprehensive approach to production and disposal. Case studies from real-world applications highlight the revolutionary potential of upcycling and sophisticated recycling technology, offering insights into how these strategies could lessen the industry's environmental impact. Co-processing in cement kilns is a two-pronged method that solves waste disposal issues and produces useful resources. The potential for improved trash sorting and identification is demonstrated by the combination of artificial intelligence and data analytics, opening the door to increased process efficiency in waste management. The study's conclusion emphasizes that although the study has been helpful, the search for India's sustainable textile waste management is still an ongoing project. The industry is at a turning point in its evolution, and the factors pushing it in that direction will be sustained research and innovation leading the way toward a time when environmental stewardship and economic prosperity coexist together. Sustainable long-term production planning of open pit mines: An integrated framework for concurrent economical and environmental optimization

As the global demand for mineral resources continues to rise, the mining industry's environmental impact has garnered increasing attention. Sustainable mining practices demand the incorporation of environmental considerations into every phase of planning and operation. This article addresses the critical need to consider and minimize the negative environmental impacts of the operation in the long-term planning of open pit mines, with a specific focus on mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) and dust emissions. To achieve this, the article suggests an integrated framework that incorporates environmental data obtained from life cycle assessment (LCA) and a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) into the mine planning process. This framework, referred to as LCA-MILP, quantifies the environmental impact of mining activities. The article examines various GHG constraints and economic scenarios. To assess and verify the effectiveness of our proposed LCA-MILP framework, we conducted a case study on an open-pit iron ore mine situated in the Middle East. This article underscores the vital role of harmonizing environmental impact with long-term open-pit mine planning, ultimately fostering a more sustainable and socially responsible mining industry. For example, it was feasible to reduce the GHG emissions for 11.05% while achieving 93.66% of the original NPV. In another instance, the framework was capable of achieving the same NPV as the baseline with a 2% price adjustment (a common policy), while attaining a 5.39% reduction in its environmental impact. These measurable outcomes offer mining managers a comprehension of the compromises and prospects associated with incorporating factors into their long-term mine planning procedure promoting a mining industry that is both sustainable and economically viable.

Assessing environmental impacts of a textile company using life cycle assessment approach-a case study.

The textile industry is known for its significant environmental impact, and as such, there is a growing need to assess the industry's production practices. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an effective tool for measuring the environmental impact of textile products from raw material production to end-of-life disposal. Surat city, known as textile hub of India, has multiple industrial clusters that play host to different elements of the textile value chain. This research aims to evaluate the environmental performance of a Surat-based textile company. The study involves the collection of data from textile manufacturing facilities, including gray cloth production and wet processes (gate-to-gate approach). The data collected has been analyzed using the GABI (9.2.1 version) software. The study provides potential environmental impact data on present textile technology and production situation. Significant hotspots have been determined throughout supply chain and the associated drivers identified. However, the industry's environmental impact can be reduced by practicing ecoefficiency, immaterialization, and recycling textile waste. This research highlights the importance of LCA in identifying the environmental impact of the textile industry and provides a basis for developing sustainable practices to minimize the industry's environmental impact.

Real-time and hardware in the loop validation of electric vehicle performance: Robust nonlinear predictive speed and currents control based on space vector modulation for PMSM

The transport industry's environmental impact has prompted various stakeholders to focus more on electric vehicles as a potential solution. Extensive research on electric vehicle motor control reveals their complexity, highlighting the crucial role of the traction motor control mechanism being one of their essential subsystems. This study presents a novel approach to control the drive system of an electric vehicle's permanent magnet synchronous motor, using a robust non-linear model predictive control in a cascaded structure combined with a space vector modulation technique. The formulation of the robust non-linear model predictive control law involves optimizing a new cost function with the inclusion of an integral action in the controller to ensure zero steady-state error. An important aspect of this control approach is its ability to enhance robustness without needing information about external perturbations and parameter uncertainties. Moreover, the space vector modulation technique is designed to address the issue of current harmonic distortion by carefully selecting appropriate switching vectors. The appropriate selection for space voltage vectors for every sampling period maintains a consistent switching frequency. As a result, the SVM can enhance torque-rippled regulation and accomplish effective flux and torque control. The performance of the proposed control system is evaluated through a series of numerical simulations using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results are analyzed and compared to assess the effectiveness of the proposed control system in terms of tracking accuracy, disturbance rejection, robustness against parameter uncertainties, reduction of torque, and current ripples. To further validate the numerical simulation results, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup is established using the OPAL-RT platform. Furthermore, experimental validation on a PMSM utilizing the dSPACE DS1202 board is carried out, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed control system. These findings validate the suggested control technique's robustness and efficiency.

Synergic effect of carbon regulation policies and multi-period credit financing in global retailing with reworking

Carbon emissions regulation has become one of the most important priorities for the business sector these days to enhance customer satisfaction. Carbon emissions regulation in the retail sector is crucial to mitigate the industry's environmental impact. It promotes the company's adherence to emission standards by conducting environmentally friendly practices like energy-efficient operation and supply chain management. This study considers various carbon emissions regulation policies, especially with reworking which repairs the imperfect items in global retailing to enhance customer satisfaction. To detect defects, a machine-based autonomated inspection is used. Also, for active global retailing, multi-period credit financing is applied in the model. Under such multi-period credit financing and carbon emission regulations, we optimize cycle time, selling price, and investments for autonomated inspection and product biodegradability to maximize the profit of the retail industry. Nine different cases regarding the carbon emission policy and credit financing are studied and compared. We found that the retail industry will earn a maximum profit when cycle time is less than the first credit period under a limited carbon emissions policy which is at least 0.09% higher compared to other cases. Credit financing helps to increase the profit by 1.57%. Consequently, profit becomes the least when cycle time is greater than the second delay period under the carbon taxation policy.

Innovations and Opportunities in Sustainable Textile Recycling

Waste or wastage is the term for materials that remain unutilized after a product's initial use or process completion. It is a type of substance that is worthless, ineffective, or flawed. Thus, material that loses its value or becomes unusable after the creation of any textile product has concluded is referred to as textile waste. Produce waste occurs during all phases of the textile production process, including spinning, weaving, knitting, dying, finishing, and garment making. This study examines the effects textile waste on the environment and the difficulties in recycling procedures within the industry, which is crucial for the world economy and ecosystem. It is crucial to move towards a circular economy model since the textile industry produces a lot of trash because of its fast fashion cycles and high levels of production to meet demand. This study emphasizes the textile industry's significant environmental impact. The conclusions show that although textile recycling can help lessen the industry's environmental impact, there are still a number of obstacles to overcome, including the need for low-grade materials to have commercially viable recycling processes, the high cost of recovery procedures, and the logistical and technical challenges associated with separating fiber blends. In order to deal with these issues, the study emphasizes how crucial it is to develop environmentally friendly procedures and cutting-edge recycling technologies.

Production of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride from fluorosilicic acid: a review.

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF), a critical raw material for industries such as aluminum, pharmaceuticals, and petroleum, has traditionally been sourced from fluorite-a non-renewable mineral. The unsustainable reliance on fluorite has catalyzed the search for alternative AHF production methods. A promising substitute is fluorosilicic acid (FSA), a byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry previously deemed waste. Transforming fluorosilicic acid into AHF not only yields a valuable resource but also addresses the environmental and economic challenges associated with waste management. The innovative practice of producing AHF from fluorosilicic acid signals a shift towards sustainable chemical production by capitalizing on waste, potentially diminishing reliance on fluorite and reducing the industry's environmental impact. This review thoroughly dissects the AHF synthesis process from fluorosilicic acid. Despite the acknowledged importance of fluorinated compounds in numerous industrial applications, research on their synthesis from fluorosilicic acid is limited and fragmented. This review seeks to amalgamate this scattered information by closely scrutinizing diverse industrial processing methods. Additionally, it explores the current and future landscape, economic feasibility, and strategies to navigate the obstacles inherent in synthesizing AHF from fluorosilicic acid. It also assesses the environmental impact of these methods, thereby contributing to the dialogue in this emerging field. The primary aim of this manuscript is to foster further research and promote the industrial uptake of this sustainable process. Highlighting the challenges and proposing potential improvements, the review supports the responsible reuse of waste and advocates for advancements in industrial practices.

Sustainability of Different Fluoride Delivery Methods

The Greener NHS Programme is dedicated to promoting methods that enhance patient care while minimizing the healthcare industry's environmental impact. This article summarizes the evidence for the environmental sustainability of using the fluoride prevention methods that are recommended by the Department of Health. CPD/Clinical Relevance: The sustainability of the use of fluoride in the prevention of caries is an issue to consider.

High-frequency sectoral carbon and environmental analysis based on monthly input-output tables compilation during 2018–2021

This paper proposes a process for updating monthly input-output tables with monthly macroeconomic statistics and published input-output tables. Reasonable assumptions are set up and 48monthly input-output tables are prepared from 2018 to 2021 with the combination of the row range series method and nonlinear mathematical planning. The Weaver-Thomas composite index is used to analyze the role of the sector in the economic network, and the sectoral correlation indicators are used to analyze the correlation change of the sector's monthly electricity emissions to show an environmental application effect of the monthly input-output table. The results show that the monthly input-output tables can be prepared with acceptable accuracy, and they can reveal the sectoral network structure changes and sectoral carbon emissions changes in continuous monthly time series. The proposed approach contributes for the compilation of high-time-frequency input-output tables, so as to support high-frequency industrial environmental impact analysis.

Assessing Chinese fashion organizations’ change readiness for the circular economy (FashionReady4CE): Development and validation of FashionReady4CE scales

The Chinese fashion industry's environmental impact has led to calls for a transition from a linear economic model to a circular economic (CE) model. However, it remains uncertain if Chinese fashion organizations are ready to make this change. This study addresses this gap by exploring “change readiness” as an understudied construct in the CE literature to aid researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in assessing Chinese fashion organizations' readiness to transition to the CE (i.e., FashionReady4CE). Using organizational readiness for change as the theoretical framework and item response theory as the methodology, the FashionReady4CE scales were formulated. Through a comprehensive integration of qualitative and quantitative methods, a robust set of FashionReady4CE scales was developed, encompassing 25 scale items that originated from four key constructs: change commitment and change efficacy, which jointly form change readiness, along with change-related effort and implementation effectiveness pertinent to the CE. The validated set of FashionReady4CE scales holds important implications for academic researchers, fashion industry practitioners, and policymakers, empowering them to successfully shift toward the CE.

MAPPING CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECTS: A CASE STUDY OF A MAJOR COMPANY IN THE SPORTS & OUTDOOR INDUSTRY

Abstractparticipants have an average annual carbon footprint of 844 kg of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions. Thus, it is crucial to find solutions that reduce the sports industry's environmental impact. In this context, the circular economy emerges as a possible alternative. This paper analyses a sports production and retail company transitioning to the circular economy. First, we identified 154 internal circular projects concerning 89 product categories and classified them into different circular strategies and approaches. Then, we conducted interviews with 33 project representatives. Our results show that repair & maintenance is the most employed loop, but sharing economy and recycling also have an essential role. Each circularity loop presents specific challenges, but personal conviction is the common motivator. However, there is a need for greater allocation of resources such as time and budget. Additionally, strong governance is essential to structure these initiatives.

Integrating Circular Economy, SBTI, Digital LCA, and ESG Benchmarks for Sustainable Textile Dyeing: A Critical Review of Industrial Textile Practices

<p>Dyes play a crucial role in various industries, but their environmental impact and potential health risks have raised concerns. This review paper examines the classification and applications of dyes, highlighting the challenges posed by synthetic dyes and the growing interest in natural dyes. The impact of textile dyes on human health, ecosystems, water, soil, and air emissions is explored. The focus then shifts to sustainable dyeing practices in the denim industry, which can significantly reduce its environmental footprint and enhance product sustainability. The adoption of sustainable dyes aligns with circular economy principles, leading to energy and water savings. Collaboration, consumer awareness, and the integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are essential for driving sustainable dye adoption and promoting circular economy principles. The role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors in sustainable denim dyeing is emphasized, encompassing environmental, social, and governance considerations throughout the supply chain. The need to address greenwashing and validate sustainability claims is discussed, highlighting the importance of certifications and transparency. Chemical dyes are recognized as key contributors to achieving sustainability targets in the denim industry, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and reducing carbon emissions. The review concludes by stressing the importance of sustainable dyeing practices, considering water and energy usage, waste generation, and emissions, to minimize the denim industry's environmental impact and achieve sustainability objectives.</p>

Smart materials and technologies for sustainable concrete construction

This paper presents a comprehensive review of current trends and opportunities for sustainable concrete construction, emphasizing the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices to mitigate the industry's environmental impact. Green concrete, supplementary cementitious materials, permeable concrete, cool concrete, and the use of local materials are explored as sustainable materials and technologies. Innovations like self-healing concrete, 3D-printed concrete, photocatalytic concrete, electrified machineries, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage principles are also discussed, highlighting their potential to improve the sustainability of construction practices. Challenges faced in implementing sustainable concrete construction practices, such as technical, economic, and social barriers, are also addressed. The roles of governments, industry, and academia in promoting sustainable concrete construction are examined, stressing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and research. Lastly, emerging trends and technologies, including digitalization, data-driven approaches, and circular economy principles, are identified as critical factors in driving the transition towards sustainable concrete construction.

The slow violence of mining and environmental suffering in the Andean waterscapes

The acceleration of mineral extraction in many parts of the world since the early 2000s has raised concerns of mining-related pollution. However, the environmental harms of mining are not always immediately visible, but rather accumulate gradually over time through processes of slow violence. This article analyzes how the slow violence, including material pollution, malleability of mining companies’ discourses and political practices and state authorities’ ambivalent environmental regulation, shape local people's experiences of environmental suffering in the Peruvian Andes. The study is based on ethnographic-oriented fieldwork done in the Cunas watershed in 2019 and 2022, examination of the mining industry's environmental impact assessments and hydrological analysis of the water and sediment quality of the Cunas River in 2021. We argue that a combined analysis of the politics and discourses of mining-related environmental-social responsibility, the materiality of pollution, and residents’ interpretations of it, help understand the multiple impacts of slow violence on everyday environmental suffering. Examining the intersects of the sociopolitical and hydroecological aspects of slow violence is crucial, especially in the fragile waterscapes of the global South, such as the Andean highlands, altered by long-term extractivism.

Equitable optimization of US airline route networks

Restructuring route networks (i.e., modifying the graph of origin-destination pairs) remains a promising alternative for reducing the airline industry's environmental impact. However, there exists a fundamental trade-off between emissions from flight and airport accessibility, since flights connecting underserved, low-accessibility communities tend to possess high CO2/seat-mile ratios. Thus, this work develops an open-source analytical framework and methodology that restructures U.S. airline route networks to simultaneously minimize emissions and maximize airport accessibility. To achieve this goal, this paper designs a metric to quantify airport accessibility and combines it with an open-source system-wide emissions estimation methodology. This facilitates the creation of a mixed-integer linear optimization model that returns revised flight frequencies and aircraft allotment. Using United Airlines 2019 Q3 data as a case study, this model is able to construct an alternative route network with a 25% reduction on the total number of flights, 4.4% decrease in the average emissions per seat-mile and a 17.6% improvement in the spread of the airports' accessibility scores, all while satisfying historic passenger demand.

Natural versus synthetic dyes: Consumers’ understanding of apparel coloration and their willingness to adopt sustainable alternatives

Sustainable alternatives such as natural dyes are much-needed, but also highly dependent on consumer acceptance and cognizance of the benefits of natural dyes versus those derived from synthetic origin. This study explores and describes consumers’ understanding of environmental repercussions surrounding apparel coloration and their willingness to choose more sustainable alternatives. In adopting a qualitative paradigm, seven focus group discussions generated in-depth insight surrounding consumers’ perspectives on the topic. A purposive non-probability sampling technique was used to recruit females aged between 20 and 55 years because they are generally more involved in apparel consumption decisions. The findings revealed that despite participants’ convictions surrounding the fashion industry's environmental impact, their understanding of apparel coloration and the implications of synthetic dyes were limited. Participants also identified factors that may inhibit their choice of naturally dyed apparel. Information provision and the role of various stakeholders appear key in the pursuit of more sustainable choices.

Understanding the link between industrial stimulation effect and environmental impact of sponge city: With a focus on the construction phase

‘Sponge City’ has been widely accepted as a green transformation direction of China's urbanization. Such a mid-to long-term construction strategy will bring about prominent economic stimulation effects and complicated environmental impacts, whereas the research is far from sufficiency. This study developed a methodology based on the Hybrid Life Cycle Assessment to quantify the impact of the entire supply chains and relevant pollution processes, by disaggregating nine Sponge City construction sub-sectors from the construction sector in Input-Output table and parameterizing a specific environmental matrix focusing on water and air pollutants and CO2 emission. Taken the Sponge City pilot area of Pingxiang City as a case, the evaluation of direct and overall industrial stimulation effects and embodied pollutant discharges, as well as analysis of the implicit connections, were carried out. It is found that the total inputs stimulated by Sponge City construction could reach 4.4 times of the direct input, while pollution involved by the supply chains amounts to 3%∼6% of total emission of the pilot city. The primary industry providing direct input and the service industries as indirect supporters became the main sources of water pollution. Although the inputs from the secondary industry brought about a more remarkable industrial stimulation effect, direct and indirect inputs from non-metallic mineral products, indirect inputs from metal products and the electricity industry led to noteworthy air pollution problems and global warming potential. The outcomes help promote more holistic understanding of the Sponge City construction as an emerging industry and facilitate comprehensive decisions for the sake of sustainable urban development.

Testing the sensitivity of stated environmental preferences to variations in choice architecture

We conducted a three-way split sample discrete choice experiment (DCE) to investigate welfare estimates for attributes related to the management of coastal cod stocks in Arctic Norway. In a base DCE design, respondents faced three core attributes: (1) coastal cod spawning biomass as an indicator of the sustainability of the cod stocks, (2) stricter regulations on primary user groups (commercial fishers, local recreational anglers, the marine fishing tourism industry), and (3) annual household cost. In two experimentally varied DCE designs, respondents received a fourth attribute that explicitly describes the expansion of the marine fishing tourism industry in the region. In treatment 1, the expansion is represented by the number of coastal cod caught by marine fishing tourists as an indicator of the industry's environmental impact. In treatment 2, the expansion is represented by the number of new jobs as an indicator of the industry's socioeconomic impact. These two attribute translations, designed to be perfectly correlated, serve as an instrument for testing a choice architecture - value activation framework recently proposed in the management science literature. Mixed logit estimation results indicate that welfare estimates vary significantly across choice architectures, both statistically and economically. Additional regression analyses of conditional welfare estimates and respondents' status quo choices yield mixed evidence of value activation. The overall message of the study is that DCE researchers should be cognizant of their role as choice architects when advising public resource managers and policymakers.

Extraction and Utilization of Valuable Elements from Bauxite and Bauxite Residue: A Review.

Bauxite is the ideal raw material for the manufacturing of alumina. Aside from the primary constituents of aluminum and silicon, bauxite is frequently coupled with many valuable elements such as gallium (Ga), titanium (Ti), scandium (Sc), and lithium (Li). The bauxite residue and circulating spent liquor in alumina production typically include significant amounts of valuable elements, making them a potential source of polymetallic. The recovery of these essential components can greatly increase alumina manufacturing process efficiency while reducing industrial liability and environmental impact. This study gives a critical analysis of existing technology used to recover valuable elements from bauxite residue and circulating spent liquor to provide insight into the broader usage of bauxite residue as a resource rather than a waste. A comparison of existing process features demonstrates that an integrated process for valuable elements recovery and waste emission reduction is advantageous.
