Dynamic capabilities and competitiveness: Relationship among industrial policy, structural transformation, and economic growth in Indonesian regional industries

The complex interactions of industrial Policy, structural transformation, economic growth, and competitive strategy within regional industries are examined in this research. Using a dynamic capabilities framework, the study examines the mediating roles of organizational innovation and adaptability in the link between competitiveness and macroeconomic variables. A two-way fixed effects model is used in this study to examine the influence of structural transformation (ST) on Industrial Policy (IP). Using regional data covering the years 2010 to 2022, the research undertaken in this paper explores the dynamics of the Indonesian economy by empirically assessing the consequences of structural change on industrial Policy. In order to establish a comprehensive model that clarifies the mechanisms through which industrial policies and structural shifts impact the development of dynamic capabilities, ultimately influencing competitiveness strategies, this research draws on a large amount of empirical data and integrates insights from seminal works. Our research adds to our knowledge of strategic management in regional industries by providing detailed information on how economic development and policy interventions influence businesses’ ability to adapt and gain a competitive edge. In addition to advancing scholarly discourse, this study offers business executives and politicians valuable insights for managing the intricacies of global economic processes.

From pixels to production: the impact of digital finance on the industrial fabric of rural China

PurposeThe aim of this study is to discern the role of digital finance in driving rural industrial integration and revitalization. Specifically, it intends to shed light on how the deep development of digital finance can contribute to the optimization and transformation of the rural industrial structure. The research further explores the particular effects of this financial transformation in the central and western regions of China.Design/methodology/approachThis research studies the influence of digital finance on rural industrial integration across 30 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2020. Utilizing the entropy weight method, a comprehensive evaluation index system is established to gauge the level of rural industrial integration. A two-way fixed effects model, intermediary effect model, and threshold effect model are employed to decipher the relationship between digital finance and rural industrial integration.FindingsFindings reveal a positive relationship between digital finance and rural industrial integration. A single threshold feature was identified: beyond a traditional finance development level, the marginal effect of digital finance on rural industrial integration increases. These effects are more noticeable in central and western regions.Originality/valueEmpirical outcomes contribute to policy discourse on rural digital finance, assisting policymakers in crafting effective strategies. Understanding the threshold of traditional finance development provides a new perspective on the potential of digital finance to drive rural industrial integration.

Impact of green technology innovation on the quality of regional economic development

This study examines the effects of green technology innovation on regional economic development and its heterogeneity by using Chinese interprovincial panel data (2010–2020), and analyses the impacts of spatial effect and mediating effect. Green technology innovation can significantly contribute to regional economic development. From a spatial perspective, green technology innovation in surrounding provinces can inhibit regional economic development. Based on intermediary effects, green technology innovation can aid regional economic development by promoting industrial structural transformation, optimizing the energy consumption structure, and enhancing green total factor productivity.

Environmental regulation effects from the perspective on the industrial chain: evidence from energy enterprises in China

More attention has been paid to environmental regulation of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy industry under the transformation of industrial structure. This paper takes microdata of Chinese energy enterprises from 1998 to 2012 as a sample to build a duty-sharing model, analyzes the effect of environmental regulations on the industrial chain, and explains the “double growth” phenomenon that occurred in China, which is nothing short of miraculous in terms of the environment and economy. In the industrial chain, the environmental obligations and responsibilities will be shared between upstream and downstream enterprises due to trade linkages. This paper finds that environmental responsibilities will move forward through the industrial chain when environmental regulations are strengthened. Downstream companies will loosen “relative” control constraints, thereby expanding output but increasing demand for upstream products. Different from the existing research, we claim that, since environmental regulation has a differential effect on the industrial chain, it will promote the growth of output in the entire chain, in contrast to the theory of “cost compliance”, which claims that environmental regulation will inevitably lead to the output. Based on this research, this paper puts forward some suggestions and insights on how the government implements environmental regulations.

Green credit and regional industrial structure upgrading: Evidence from China

China's economy has transitioned from a phase of rapid growth to one focused on high-quality development. The increasing emphasis on ecological and environmental protection has elevated the significance of green credit as a crucial driver for industrial structural upgrading. This study employs panel data analysis to examine the role of green credit in facilitating such upgrading, while also exploring regional heterogeneity. By fostering technological innovation, green credit can effectively stimulate enterprises to innovate and drive industrial structural transformation. Lastly, several recommendations are proposed to further promote the sustainable development of green credit.

Research on the development status, problems, and optimization path of green finance in commercial banks

With the green economy gradually becoming the trend of global economic development, green finance has also risen to China's national strategy and become a new blue ocean business for the future development of commercial banks. The development of green finance not only plays an obvious role in improving economic efficiency and realizing the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure, but also plays a great significance role in environmental protection, and realize the harmony and unity of man and nature, which is an important initiative to realize the progress and development of the country.The article firstly points out the problems in the process of green finance development, and analyzes the challenges faced in the process of green finance development. Finally, the article gives the optimized ways for commercial banks to develop green finance from four perspectives, such as learning international law governance experience, introducing the Equator Principles for project evaluation, improving policy support, strengthening government guidance, strengthening product research and development and innovation, and attaching importance to talent cultivation, so as to provide a reference for China to further promote green finance and achieve high-quality development.

How do industrial land transfer modes impact carbon emissions? An intermediation perspective based on industrial structure.

Industrial land is currently the main carrier and important source of global carbon emissions, and as the world's largest developing country, China's large-scale and diversified industrial land supply has made it the world's largest carbon emitter. Therefore, researching the impact of different supply methods of industrial land on carbon emissions and its impact paths in China can help provide a reference for other countries to reduce carbon emissions from the perspective of urban industrial land management, which is of great significance for effectively promoting global carbon reduction. Based on this, this paper analyses the impact of different supply methods of industrial land on carbon emissions and its urban heterogeneity using the SYS-GMM and chain-mediated effects models for 285 cities in China from 2008 to 2020. The study found that, in general, the impact of different industrial land transfer modes on carbon emission has hysteresis and persistence. Agreement and listing transfer with government intervention can significantly exacerbate carbon emissions, while more market-based bidding and auction transfer can dampen carbon emissions. In terms of intermediary effects, the transfer of industrial land by agreement and listing will inhibit the rationalization and advancement of industrial structure, thus aggravating carbon emissions. The transfer of industrial land by bidding and auction will create barriers to entry and a crowding-out effect, promote the rationalization of industrial structure and the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure and moderate carbon emissions. In terms of city heterogeneity, there is urban heterogeneity in the impact of industrial land transfer on carbon emissions in cities with different economic types. Bidding and auction transfer for industrial land in both economically developed and less developed cities can promote carbon pollution. While the more developed urban economy makes the intermediary effect of industrial structure not significant. In the future, it is necessary to strictly control the scale of industrial land supply; the whole process supervision mechanism of industrial land allocation and differentiated industrial land supply strategies will provide useful experience for many developing countries in allocating industrial land to mitigate carbon emissions, generating effective contributions to global carbon emission reduction.

Digital economy, innovation factor allocation and industrial structure transformation-A case study of the Yangtze River Delta city cluster in China.

The attainment of regional high-quality development necessitates the critical role of the digital economy in facilitating the transformation of industrial structures. This study intends to investigate the effect of the digital economy on industrial structure transformation from the perspective of innovation factor allocation using a panel dataset of 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region for the period from 2011 to 2020. This paper considers four dimensions to measure the level of industrial structure transformation i.e. industrial structure servitization, industrial structure upgradation, service industry structure upgradation and industrial interaction level. The results of the study suggest that the digital economy can significantly improve industrial structure transformation. The results remain consistent even after several robustness checks. Further, the analysis of the mechanism of action shows that the digital economy can promote industrial structure transformation by optimizing the innovation factor allocation. The study provides several policy implications for the digital economy and its role in the promotion of industrial structure transformation.

Research on the Development Status of Higher Vocational Education in China

With the rapid development of China's economy and the transformation and upgrading of industrial structure, higher vocational education plays an important role in cultivating high-quality skilled personnel. This paper analyses the current situation of the development of higher vocational education in China, discusses the challenges it faces, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. The study finds that the number and scale of schools in China's higher vocational education have been expanding, and the setting of disciplines and specialisations has been gradually diversified, but there are still certain problems in the construction of teaching staff and the guarantee of teaching quality. Meanwhile, the mismatch between higher vocational education and industrial demand, and the unbalanced distribution of educational resources are also challenges to the current development. In response to these problems, this paper puts forward countermeasures and suggestions such as diversified talent cultivation modes, balanced allocation of educational resources, strengthening industry-university-research-use cooperation, reinforcing the construction of faculty, as well as promoting the optimisation and updating of disciplines and specialties. These measures will help to improve the quality and level of China's higher vocational education and meet the demand for talents in social and economic development.

The impact of rural e‐commerce platforms on the transformation of industrial structure: Evidence from China

AbstractThe rapid development of rural e‐commerce in China has caught the attention of economists around the world. Through incorporating rural e‐commerce platform into the general equilibrium model, this paper theoretically analyzes the impacts of rural e‐commerce platform on industrial structure and the potential mechanisms. Then, taking the exogenous policy of Comprehensive Demonstration of National E‐commerce into Rural Areas in China as a quasi‐experiment, this paper constructs a staggered difference‐in‐differences model to empirically examine how rural e‐commerce platforms affect the output proportion of nonagricultural sector with samples of 2305 counties in China from 2009 to 2019. The findings indicate that the construction of rural e‐commerce platform promotes the transformation of industrial structure through technological advances and reduction of transaction costs.

Exploration and Practice of “Government-School-Enterprise” Cooperative Education Mode Under the Background of Rural Revitalization

In recent years, with the upgrading and transformation of the rural industrial structure, rural revitalization has emerged as a crucial strategy for China’s rural development. Talent has become the key factor in driving rural revitalization forward. Against the backdrop of rural revitalization, the imperative to enhance the quality of rural personnel training and cultivate professionals who possess a deep understanding of agriculture, harbor an affinity for rural life, and champion the cause of rural development has become a paramount concern for colleges and universities. In this context, this paper undertakes an analysis of the value implications of the “government-school-enterprise” cooperative education model within the framework of rural revitalization. Furthermore, it outlines a roadmap for the construction of the “government-school-enterprise” cooperative education model, offering valuable insights for future endeavors in this area.

Environmental regulation and employment: Evidence from China's new Environmental Protection Law

Realizing environmental protection and employment stability when facing strict environmental regulations is an essential issue of concern for many developing countries, including China. Based on a dataset of Chinese listed companies and a dataset of Chinese individual labor-force surveys, this paper uses an estimation technique pairing propensity score matching with a difference-in-differences estimator to examine the impact of the new Environmental Protection Law (EPL) on the supply and demand of labor at the micro level and the reallocation effect of interindustry labor at the macro level. The results show that the new EPL generated employment losses at the micro level. The policy reduces firms’ labor demand by lowering firms’ output and total investment expenditures and, in the process, does not stimulate firms’ innovative behavior. Moreover, implementing the new EPL reduces the wage income of workers, which in turn reduces the labor supply. Conversely, at the macro level, the new EPL promotes the transfer of labor from polluting to cleaner industries, realizes the reallocation of labor between industries, and thus promotes the transformation and upgrading of regional industrial structure.

Evaluating the Impact of Urban Digital Infrastructure on Land Use Efficiency Based on 279 Cities in China

The development and application of urban digital infrastructure can alter land use patterns and facilitate the aggregation of factors such as labor and capital, thereby influencing the land use efficiency in cities. Based on statistical data from 279 cities in China spanning from 2004 to 2019, this study employs fixed-effects and mediation models to analyze the impact of urban digital infrastructure on land use efficiency. The findings reveal that the construction of urban digital infrastructure significantly promotes the enhancement of land use efficiency, with technological innovation levels and industrial structural transformation serving as mediators between urban digital infrastructure and land use efficiency. The impact of urban digital infrastructure on land use efficiency exhibits heterogeneity across different city scales, urban tiers, geographic locations, and policy implementation batches. Its effects are more pronounced in larger-scale cities, higher-tier cities, those located in the central and western regions, and the first two batches of pilot cities. The research findings contribute to providing theoretical references and a decision-making basis for enhancing land use efficiency, advocating for increased investment in urban digital infrastructure construction, encouraging technological innovation levels, and facilitating the upgrading of industrial structural transformation.

Digital inclusive finance, industrial structure, and economic growth: An empirical analysis of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in China.

As a product of combining digital technology and traditional finance, digital inclusive finance plays a vital role in economic growth. This paper deeply analyzes the impact of digital inclusive finance on economic growth and the specific transmission path. This research selects the municipal panel data of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei from 2011 to 2020 and empirically studies the impact of digital inclusive finance on economic growth. From the perspectives of industrial structure transformation speed, industrial structure upgrading, and industrial structure rationalization, this study analyzes the role of industrial structure in the impact of digital inclusive finance on economic growth and tests the heterogeneity of the impact of digital inclusive finance on economic growth. The results show that digital inclusive finance has a significant role in promoting economic growth. The depth of use of digital inclusive finance has the most significant impact, followed by the breadth of coverage, and the degree of digitization is the smallest. The industrial structure transformation speed and the industrial structure rationalization play a significant intermediary role in the economic growth effect of digital inclusive finance, and the industrial structure upgrading has no significant impact on the economic growth effect of digital inclusive finance; the promotion effect of digital inclusive finance on economic growth is bigger in the economically developed group, the higher digital inclusive finance group and the technologically developed group, and the promotion effect is smaller in the economically underdeveloped group, the lower digital inclusive finance group and the technologically underdeveloped group. The results provide a strong reference for policy formulation to promote the development of digital inclusive finance and economic growth.

Sci-tech innovation, industrial structure transformation and economic development: An empirical study based on province panel data of China

Based on panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2019, this study explores the complex dynamic interaction between scientific and technological innovation, industrial structure transformation and economic development by building PVAR model. After GMM estimation, impulse response function analysis and variance decomposition analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: Technological innovation has a significant promoting effect on economic development, and economic development can also promote technological innovation; Technological innovation has a positive impact on industrial structure transformation, while industrial structure transformation has a slight negative impact on technological innovation; Economic development can lead to industrial structure transformation, but the impact of industrial structure transformation on economic development is not significant.

How Does Diversification of Producer Services Agglomeration Help Reduce Carbon Emissions Intensity? Evidence from 252 Chinese Cities, 2005–2018

Mitigating carbon emissions intensity (CEI) and promoting carbon neutrality at the city level are essential for addressing the challenges of global climate change and advancing sustainable development. This study examines the influence of producer services agglomeration diversification (PSAD) on CEI using an unbalanced panel dataset including 252 Chinese prefectural-level cities from 2005 to 2018 for empirical analyses. We find that improving PSAD in a city can significantly mitigate CEI. Stronger PSAD accelerates a city’s industrial structure transformation from secondary- to tertiary-dominated in addition to boosting green development capabilities, both of which are confirmed to have concrete carbon emissions reduction effects. Furthermore, PSAD only significantly alleviates CEI in non-eastern cities in China, and the benefits of carbon emissions reduction are stronger after 2010. Our policy insights highlight land utilization in shaping the intracity layouts of producer services agglomerations (PSAs) and stress regional-level measures. Recognizing regional differences and integrating PSAs allocation with broader institutional measures can amplify PSAD’s benefits.

The impact of industrial transformation on green economic efficiency: New evidence based on energy use

Developing a green economy is key to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This paper uses the SBM-GML index, which includes non-desired outputs, to measure the trend of regional green economic efficiency changes and analyze the impact mechanism and realization path of industrial transformation on green economic efficiency. The research results show that advanced industrial structure has a positive influence on green economic efficiency nationwide, while energy utilization structure and energy utilization efficiency have positive partial intermediary effects in the influence path; industrial structure rationalization is also significantly positively related to green economic efficiency nationwide, and the mediating effect of energy utilization is positive. The impact of industrial transformation on green economic efficiency has regional heterogeneity, and the mediating effect of energy use also differs. Among them, the impact effect in the eastern region is basically consistent with the national sample, but is negative in the central and western regions. This paper proposes countermeasures in terms of adjusting the industrial structure, improving energy efficiency, and perfecting industrial and energy policies, which can provide theoretical and practical references for promoting the transformation and upgrading of regional industrial structure, optimizing energy utilization, and advancing the efficiency of the national and regional green economy.

Quantifying the nonlinear factors of urban shrinkage: A case study in Heilongjiang Province, China

With urbanization, urban shrinkage has become a more prevalent and severe global problem. Although many studies have explored it, most of them lack precision, and the complex nonlinear causal mechanisms of urban shrinkage are still poorly understood. Therefore, based on the background of the transformation of traditional industrial cities in China, this research selects Heilongjiang Province as a typical case study and quantify the spatial pattern of shrinking cities. Furthermore, from a nonlinear relational perspective, the complex mechanism of urban shrinkage is revealed by using LightGBM. The results show that the area experienced a large-scale comprehensive shrinkage and severe shrinkage in some areas, while also generating scattered population clusters. In addition, the economic and industrial structure are still the most influential factors for population change, and the industrial structure transformation is still the main obstacle for its development. The research results are conducive to elevating the awareness of urban shrinkage in industrial cities and providing some theoretical guidance for sustainable development.
