A GSO‐based multi‐objective technique for performance optimization of blockchain‐based industrial Internet of things

SummaryThe latest developments in the industrial Internet of things (IIoT) have opened up a collection of possibilities for many industries. To solve the massive IIoT data security and efficiency problems, a potential approach is considered to satisfy the main needs of IIoT, such as high throughput, high security, and high efficiency, which is named blockchain. The blockchain mechanism is considered a significant approach to boosting data protection and performance. In the quest to amplify the capabilities of blockchain‐based IIoT, a pivotal role is accorded to the Glowworm Swarm Optimization (GSO) algorithm. Inspired by the collaborative brilliance of glowworms in nature, the GSO algorithm offers a unique approach to harmonizing these conflicting aims. This paper proposes a new approach to improve the performance optimization of blockchain‐based IIoT using the GSO algorithm due to the blockchain's contradictory objectives. The proposed blockchain‐based IIoT system using the GSO algorithm addresses scalability challenges typically associated with blockchain technology by efficiently managing interactions among nodes and dynamically adapting to network demands. The GSO algorithm optimizes the allocation of resources and decision‐making, reducing inefficiencies and bottlenecks. The method demonstrates considerable performance improvements through extensive simulations compared to traditional algorithms, offering a more scalable and efficient solution for industrial applications in the context of the IIoT. The extensive simulation and computational study have shown that the proposed method using GSO considerably improves the objective function and blockchain‐based IIoT systems' performance compared to traditional algorithms. It provides more efficient and secure systems for industries and corporations.

Multi-information based cloud–edge–end collaborative computational tasks offloading for industrial IoT systems

Cloud–edge–end collaborative computational task offloading (CEETO) is a promising method in industrial Internet-of-things (IIoT) to support massive computational tasks generated by equipment that has low energy/computation ability. In this work, we propose a new CEETO scheme by invoking the deep learning method (DL) with the aid of a multi-information analysis approach. Firstly, considering the delay constraints of the real-time tasks and the processing ability constraints of the cloud/edge/end servers, we formulate the CEETO problem to achieve the lowest system delay by establishing contact between CEETO problem and multiple information, such as the time-related locations and tasks requirements/features. Then, we tailor a long-short term memory network (LSTMN) to analyze the relation among time, locations and task requirements/features for predicting multiple information. Finally, the predicted multiple information is utilized for the final offloading strategy generation by invoking the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA). As the proposed CEETO process is invoked based on the predictions of multiple information, it is particularly suitable for the planning, scheduling and deployment of cloud–edge–end resources in massive equipment IIoT scenarios. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can achieve effective computational task offloading.

Federated continual representation learning for evolutionary distributed intrusion detection in Industrial Internet of Things

As a promising paradigm, Federated Learning (FL)-based distributed intrusion detection offers potent protection for the network security of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Nonetheless, the practical deployment of IIoT systems occurs in a highly-complex and dynamic distributed environment. The ever-growing and dynamically-evolving cyber attacks will render the FL-based intrusion detection model inefficient, since FL cannot gracefully learn from the dynamic traffic data streams to identify new attacks. To address this issue, we propose the evolutionary distributed intrusion detection system based on federated continual representation learning, designed to continually capture effective feature representations of emerging attacks from dynamic traffic data streams. Specifically, we develop the supervised contrastive loss and the global information-aware regularization loss to alleviate the catastrophic forgetting on the previously observed attacks and mitigate the data heterogeneity across clients. Besides, we propose the prototype variance-based memory update strategy to ensure the effective memory replay data. Extensive experimental results demonstrate our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by 13.3%–31.5% in terms of average accuracy on a real energy intrusion detection dataset.

FSLEdge: An energy-aware edge intelligence framework based on Federated Split Learning for Industrial Internet of Things

Federated Learning (FL) enabled edge computing has been widely used in training complex deep learning models by coordinating various heterogeneous resources in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). However, the existing FL solutions may cause long training time or huge energy consumption for resource-constrained terminal or edge nodes. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive edge intelligence offloading framework based on Federated Split Learning (FSL) and Reinforcement Learning (RL), named FSLEdge, for IIoT systems. To begin with, a Split Learning (SL) approach was added to FL to reduce the training time and energy consumption by allowing local devices to offload some training layers into the edge servers while ensuring the protection of private data. Additionally, FSLEdge adopts RL to find the optimal split point to adaptively identify which is the best layers of the deep learning models should be offloaded into the edge servers with the goal of reducing the training time and energy consumption. Experimental studies are conducted under two different datasets: one public, CIFAR10, and one private, GridDataset, a transmission line fault detection dataset in smart grid domain. And the results show that the training time and energy consumption of the system by our proposed FSLEdge can be reduced by 10% and 21%, respectively, compared to the classical FL, without sacrificing accuracy.

Dynamic trust security approach for edge computing-based mobile IoT devices using artificial intelligence

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) encompasses various applications such as smart cities, healthcare, and agriculture, which rely on a multitude of interconnected devices. These applications demand specific performance requirements, including low latency and sufficient bandwidth. Edge computing has emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges associated with data flow processing. Particularly, in scenarios like smart cities, where a massive number of IIoT devices are deployed, edge computing serves as the primary data processing layer. However, the limited resources of edge computing, compared to cloud computing, pose significant security concerns for IIoT applications. In fact, this paper proposes a novel security system to secure the relation between the IIoT devices and edge computing. Dynamic Trust Security Approach (DTSA) leverages Artificial Intelligence to analyze, evaluate and enhance the security and privacy aspects of the IIoT devices’ interaction with edge computing. DTSA improve the security level of the IIoT system and improve the performance with more than 45% compare to the traditional method.

Balancing data privacy and sharing in IIoT: Introducing the GFL-LFF aggregation algorithm

As the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) continues to evolve, the need for effective data aggregation schemes that balance the imperatives of data sharing and individual data privacy becomes paramount. Traditional data aggregation methods often entail risks of sensitive information exposure during data transmission and storage. This paper proposes a novel Graphical Federated Learning-based Local Fennec Fox (GFL-LFF) algorithm to ensure secure aggregation by minimizing the revelation of individual data. In this study, a Graph Neural Network (GNN) with federated learning is employed to enhance privacy protection for IIoT's data aggregation scheme. A Local search-based fennec fox optimization is utilized for tuning the parameters of GNN. The GFL and LFF approaches are integrated to enhance the security of the data that can be shared through the IIoT system. The MNIST dataset, CIFAR-10 dataset, and LFW dataset were taken to conduct the experimentation results, and the evaluation measures, such as throughput, end-to-end delay, network lifetime, latency, and energy consumption, are utilized to evaluate the proposed GFL-LFF method, and these results are compared with other approaches. The GFL-LFF method achieved a throughput of 0.98 Mbps, an end-to-end delay of 1.2 s, a network lifetime of 5610 rounds, a latency of 1.6 s, and an energy consumption of 0.2 mJ. The experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed GFL-LFF method for IIoT's data aggregation scheme in privacy protection.

Privacy-preserving intelligent fault diagnostics for wind turbine clusters using federated stacked capsule autoencoder

The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the field of health monitoring has introduced the paradigm of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to the industry. IIoT systems provide enterprises with a substantial volume of monitoring data for industrial equipment health monitoring, facilitating the development of artificial intelligence fault diagnosis models. However, a singular industrial entity often encounters limitations in collecting sufficient training data in practical scenarios. Moreover, the sharing of confidential information among entities is strictly prohibited due to concerns regarding intellectual property and data security. This study proposes a fault diagnosis system that addresses this issue by incorporating a capsule-based fault feature expression into the federated learning (FL) framework. The system comprises clients distributed across multiple factories and a central server hosted in the cloud. The client models are trained on local private datasets, and then knowledge fusion is achieved by uploading intrinsic templates and pose matrices to the central server. The proposed method offers the advantage of reducing transmission burden and enhancing data security in comparison to existing FL approaches. Besides, a capsule knowledge alignment algorithm is proposed to update the capsule-based fault feature expression ona central server. To simulate real fault diagnosis application scenarios, two similar fault simulation platforms are built to acquire isolated fault diagnosis datasets. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using these datasets.

ENHANCING IIOT SECURITY WITH MACHINE LEARNING AND DEEP LEARNING FOR INTRUSION DETECTION

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital industrial devices has significantly impacted various aspects of life, underscoring the importance of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Given its importance in industrial contexts that affect human life, the IIoT represents a key subset of the broader IoT landscape. Due to the proliferation of sensors in smart devices, which are viewed as points of contact, as the gathering of data and information regarding the IIoT systems and devices operating on the IoT, there is an urgent requirement for developing effective security methods to counter such threats as well as protecting IIoT systems. In this study, we develop and evaluate a well-optimized intrusion detection system (IDS) based on deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) techniques to enhance IIoT security. Leveraging the Edge-IIoTset dataset, specifically designed for IIoT cybersecurity evaluations, we focus on detecting and mitigating 14 distinct attack types targeting IIoT and IoT protocols. These attacks are categorized into five threat groups: information collection, malware, DDoS, man-in-the-middle attacks, and injection attacks. We conducted experiments using machine learning algorithms (k-nearest neighbors, decision tree) and a neural network on the KNIME platform, achieving a remarkable 100% accuracy with the decision tree model. This high accuracy demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach in protecting industrial IoT networks.

In today’s world, the Internet of Things has become an integral part of our lives. The increasing number of intelligent devices and their pervasiveness has made it challenging for developers and system architects to plan and implement systems of Internet of Things and Industrial Internet of Things effectively. The primary objective of this work is to automate the design process of Industrial Internet of Things systems while optimizing the quality of service parameters, battery life, and cost. To achieve this goal, a general four-layer fog-computing model based on mathematical sets, constraints, and objective functions is introduced. This model takes into consideration the various parameters that affect the performance of the system, such as network latency, bandwidth, and power consumption. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II is employed to find Pareto optimal solutions, while the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution is used to identify compromise solutions on the Pareto front. The optimal solutions generated by this approach represent servers, communication links, and gateways whose information is stored in a database. These resources are chosen based on their ability to enhance the overall performance of the system. The proposed strategy follows a three-stage approach to minimize the dimensionality and reduce dependencies while exploring the search space. Additionally, the convergence of optimization algorithms is improved by using a biased initial population that exploits existing knowledge about how the solution should look. The algorithms used to generate this initial biased population are described in detail. To illustrate the effectiveness of this automated design strategy, an example of its application is presented.

Leveraging AI and Blockchain for Privacy Preservation and Security in Fog Computing

INTRODUCTION: Cloud computing's offshoot, fog computing, moves crucial data storage, processing, and networking capabilities closer to the people who need them. There are certain advantages, such improved efficiency and lower latency, but there are also some major privacy and security concerns. For these reasons, this article presents a new paradigm for fog computing that makes use of blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
 OBJECTIVES: The main goal of this research is to create and assess a thorough framework for fog computing that incorporates AI and blockchain technology. With an emphasis on protecting the privacy and integrity of data transactions and streamlining the management of massive amounts of data, this project seeks to improve the security and privacy of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems that are cloud-based.
 METHODS: Social network analysis methods are utilised in this study. The efficiency and accuracy of data processing in fog computing are guaranteed by the application of artificial intelligence, most especially Support Vector Machine (SVM), due to its resilience in classification and regression tasks. The network's security and reliability are enhanced by incorporating blockchain technology, which creates a decentralised system that is tamper resistant. To make users' data more private, zero-knowledge proof techniques are used to confirm ownership of data without actually disclosing it.
 RESULTS: When applied to fog computing data, the suggested approach achieves a remarkable classification accuracy of 99.8 percent. While the consensus decision-making process of the blockchain guarantees trustworthy and secure operations, the support vector machine (SVM) efficiently handles massive data analyses. Even in delicate situations, the zero-knowledge proof techniques manage to keep data private. When these technologies are integrated into the fog computing ecosystem, the chances of data breaches and illegal access are greatly reduced.
 CONCLUSION: Fog computing, which combines AI with blockchain, offers a powerful answer to the privacy and security issues with cloud centric IIoT systems. Combining SVM with AI makes data processing more efficient, while blockchain's decentralised and immutable properties make it a strong security measure. Additional security for user privacy is provided via zero-knowledge proofs. Improving the privacy and security of fog computing networks has never been easier than with this novel method.

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted RFID Tag-Integrated Multi-Sensor for Quality Assessment and Sensing.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is well known as an identification, track, and trace approach and is considered to be the key physical layer technology for the industrial internet of things (IIoT). However, IIoT systems have to introduce additional complex sensor networks for pervasive monitoring, and there are still challenges related to item-level sensing and data recording. To overcome the shortage, this work proposes an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted RFID-based multi-sensing technology. Both passive and semi-passive RFID tag-integrated multi-sensors are developed. The main contributions and the novelty of this investigation are as follows. A UHF RFID tag-integrated multi-sensor with a boosted charge pump is proposed; it enables high RF signal sensitivity and a long operational range. The whole hardware design, including the antenna and energy harvester, are studied. Moreover, a demonstration with real-world ham product sensing data is conducted. This work also proposes and successfully demonstrates the integration of machine learning algorithms, specifically the NARX neural network, with RFID sensing data for food product quality assessment and sensing (QAS). This application of machine learning to RFID-generated data for quality assessment is also a novel aspect of the research. The deployment of an autoregressive model with an exogenous input (NARX) neural network model, tailored for nonlinear processes, emerges as the most effective, achieving a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.007 and an R-squared value of 0.99 for ham product QAS. By deploying the technology, low-cost, timely, and flexible product QAS can be achieved in manufacturing industries, which helps product quality improvement and the optimization of the manufacturing line and supply chain.

Industrial Internet of Things: A Review of Improvements Over Traditional SCADA Systems for Industrial Automation

This review article provides an overview of the potential of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to revolutionize industrial automation. The IIoT is the Internet of Things (IoT) but in an industrial context, i.e., IIoT is used more to connect machines and devices in industrial environments. The IIoT has the potential to benefit from advances in artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning and deep learning, to increase efficiency and productivity and reduce overhead costs. We provide an overview of the supervisory control and data acquisition system, a definition of IIoT, and how IIoT can offer industry greater potential for system integration to improve automation and optimization. In addition, five of the major IIoT protocols are discussed, namely, message queue telemetry transport, advanced messaging queuing protocol, constrained application protocol, data distribution service, and open platform communication unified architecture. We then identified key IIoT improvements for industrial automation. These are; efficient and low-cost systems, digital twin, machine failure prediction, real-time remote monitoring, and security. We then discussed the key research in the literature for each category. We presented some public IIoT datasets so that researchers can use them to develop new learning models to improve the security of IIoT systems. Finally, we discussed some of the limitations, recommendations, and future perspectives for developing IIoT-enabled systems.

ASAP-IIOT: An Anonymous Secure Authentication Protocol for Industrial Internet of Things.

With the increasing demand for a digital world, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is growing rapidly across various industries. In manufacturing, particularly in Industry 4.0, the IIoT assumes a vital role. It encompasses many devices such as sensing devices, application servers, users, and authentication servers within workshop settings. The security of the IIoT is a critical issue due to wireless networks' open and dynamic nature. Therefore, designing secure protocols among those devices is an essential aspect of IIoT security functionality and poses a significant challenge to the IIoT systems. In this paper, we propose a lightweight anonymous authentication protocol to preserve privacy for IIoT users, enabling secure IIoT communication. The protocol has been validated to demonstrate its comprehensive ability to overcome various vulnerabilities and prevent malicious attacks. Finally, the performance evaluation confirms that the proposed protocol is more effective and efficient than the existing alternatives.

Proof-of-authority-based secure and efficient aggregation with differential privacy for federated learning in industrial IoT

The industrial internet of things (IIoT) uses connected devices and sensors to improve efficiency in industry, but increased reliance on these systems makes them prone to faults. To ensure the reliability of IIoT systems, robust fault detection is necessary, which can be provided by artificial intelligence (AI). The current state-of-the-art approach for AI in IIoT is mainly focused on centralized learning, which is inefficient due to its high communication cost. Federated learning (FL) addresses this limitation by enabling distributed training without exposing individual information. In order to provide secure and efficient FL for the IIoT environment, several research studies have investigated the use of blockchain networks. However, most of these studies ignore the processing time metric, which is crucial for IIoT networks. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient parameter aggregation technique that enhances trust, security, and privacy for IIoT. We use a lightweight smart contract deployed with a proof-of-authority (PoA)-based blockchain in combination with a Gaussian differential privacy mechanism. We evaluate our proposed system using a real bearing fault dataset and demonstrate that it is able to provide a secure aggregation process with an accuracy of 94.00% and a processing time of 1.54 s, which is suitable for the IIoT environment with a private blockchain network.

Green and Sustainable Industrial Internet of Things Systems Leveraging Wake-Up Radio to Enable On-Demand IoT Communication

The industrial Internet of things (IIoT) is a major lever in Industry 4.0 development, where reducing the carbon footprint and energy consumption has become crucial for modern companies. Today’s IIoT device infrastructure wastes large amounts of energy on wireless communication, limiting device lifetime and increasing power consumption and battery requirements. Communication capabilities seriously affect the responsiveness and availability of autonomous IoT devices when collecting data and retrieving commands to/from higher-level applications. Thus, the objective of optimizing communication remains paramount; in addition to typical optimization methods, such as algorithms and protocols, a new concept is emerging, known as wake-up radio (WuR). WuR provides novel on-demand radio communication schemes that can increase device efficiency. By expanding the lifespan of IoT devices while maintaining high reactivity and communication performance, the WuR approach paves the way for a “place-and-forget” IoT device deployment methodology that combines a small carbon footprint with an extended lifetime and highly responsive functionality. WuR technology, when applied to IoT devices, facilitates green IIoT, thereby enabling the emergence of a novel on-demand IoT (OD-IoT) concept. This article presents an analysis of the state-of-the-art WuR technology within the green IoT paradigm and details the OD-IoT concept. Furthermore, this review provides an overview of WuR applications and their impact on the IIoT, including relevant industry use cases. Finally, we describe our experimental performance evaluation of a WuR-enabled device that is commercially available off the shelf. Specifically, we focused on the communication range and energy consumption, successfully demonstrating the applicability of WuR and the strong potential that it has and the benefits that it offers for sustainable IIoT systems.

Model‐based digital twins of medicine dispensers for healthcare IoT applications

SummaryHealthcare applications with the Internet of Things (IoT) are often safety‐critical, thus, require extensive testing. Such applications are often connected to smart medical devices from various vendors. System‐level testing of such applications requires test infrastructures physically integrating medical devices, which is time and monetary‐wise expensive. Moreover, applications continuously evolve, for example, introducing new devices and users and updating software. Nevertheless, a test infrastructure enabling testing with a few devices is insufficient for testing healthcare IoT systems, hence compromising their dependability. In this paper, we propose a model‐based approach for the creation and operation of digital twins (DTs) of medicine dispensers as a replacement for physical devices to support the automated testing of IoT applications at scale. We evaluate our approach with an industrial IoT system with medicine dispensers in the context of Oslo City and its industrial partners, providing healthcare services to its residents. We study the fidelity of DTs in terms of their functional similarities with their physical counterparts: medicine dispensers. Results show that the DTs behave more than 92% similar to the physical medicine dispensers, providing a faithful replacement for the dispenser.

Federated learning for green and sustainable 6G IIoT applications

The 6th generation mobile network (6G) is expected to be launched in the early 2030s. The architecture of 6G will be the convergence of space, air, ground, and undersea networks. The power and intelligence of 6G based on advanced AI techniques will realize the concept of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In this study, we conduct a comprehensive survey of 6G IIoT applications based on Federated Learning (FL), starting from introducing recent advances in FL and IIoT systems to discussing how to integrate them. In particular, we highlight the potential of FL for supporting a range of IIoT systems such as smart medical, intelligent transportation, smart cities, unmanned aerial vehicles, and smart industry. The important discussions to drive FL into IIoT applications are emphasized. Finally, we present challenges and open issues for future research to realize green and suitable FL-based IIoT applications.
