The relationship between occupational wood dust exposure and nasal cancer

Nasal cancer has not been included in the current list of legal occupational diseases in China. There is also a lack of systematic and in-depth study on the relationship between nasal cancer and occupational exposure factors in China. In September 2018, the department for work and pensions of UK released the latest edition of the "List of diseases covered by industrial injuries disablement benefit", which lists nasal cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma associated with wood dust exposure on the UK's occupational disease list. In order to better protect the health of workers, the relationship between occupational wood dust exposure and nasal cancer is reviewed, which provides a reference for further revision and improvement of occupational disease catalogue.

The Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) is a benefit for people who are disabled either as a result of an accident at work or because of a prescribed disease. Vibration white finger.

Vibration white finger (VWF) occurs in workers who use vibrating tools. On exposure to vibration or cold, patients experience blanching, numbness and pain in the fingers due to exaggerated vasoconstriction. This may involve both central sympathetic hyper-reactivity and local vasoactive factors. In advanced cases, hypertrophy of vascular smooth muscle causes arterial occlusion and ulceration. Diagnostic tests for VWF are unreliable. In early cases, cessation of vibration exposure arrests the progression of disease and may cause symptom remission. Patients with VWF should keep themselves warm, especially their hands, which they should place in warm water at intervals during the day; they should not smoke. Vasoactive drugs may be beneficial in some patients. In the UK, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and compensation are sometimes available. Improved design of tools and restrictions on their operating time have been the main factors leading to a worldwide decline in the incidence of VWF since the early 1970s.

Diagnostic Criteria and Staging of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom the diagnosis of Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome varies depending on the purpose of that diagnosis. The criteria differ in three situations. More than 100,000 miners and ex-miners with claims for HAVS have been examined using a Medical Assessment Process which included the use of standardised tests. This contract is unique but it has had significant effects on the two other processes. The Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Scheme provides a benefit that can be paid to an employed earner because of an accident or Prescribed Disease. New recommendations have been published to remove the anomalies in the present format for assessing HAVS. If implemented the new scheme will recognise the Stockholm Workshop Scales and workers with neurological problems will also be compensated. The Health and Safety Executive will issue new guidance in the near future on the hazards of hand-arm vibration. Health surveillance in the workplace will be fundamental and the HSE propose a tiered approach with levels 1 to 5. Specialist occupational nurses and doctors with training in the diagnosis and assessment of HAVS will be needed for levels 3 and 4. Only at this level may a diagnosis of HAVS be made. The Medical Assessment Process has demonstrated that it is possible to examine a large number of claimants in a standardised manner. The IIAC and HSE recommendations contain very important improvements on the existing positions in the UK and it must be hoped that they will be implemented in the near future.

March 8th saw the release of figures providing information on new claims and first diagnosis of prescribed diseases in Great Britain in the fourth quarter of 2000. The Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) quarterly statistics provide analysis of the characteristics of the Industrial Injuries, new claims and first diagnosed disease assessments for the quarter. The types of analysis include numbers and ages of claimants and percentage disablement of newly diagnosed prescribed diseases. Annual assessments provide detailed characteristics of the people receiving IIDB at the end of each year, including individuals by specific disease or accident.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: a guide for nurses.

It is estimated that 1.2 million workers are now exposed to hazardous levels of vibration in their work. In the year 1995-1996, over 3,000 new cases of hand-arm vibration syndrome were assessed by the Department of Social Security (DSS) under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Scheme. Formerly called vibration white finger, it is the most common of all diseases assessed by the DSS, with the majority of workers affected having up to 14 per cent disability. This article explains the syndrome and its management.
