Program Design to Improve Punctual Graduates of Students in the Unsika Industrial Engineering Study Program by Using the 5C-4C Knowledge Conversion Method

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika) was established in 1995, one of which is the S1 Industrial Engineering (IT) Study Program, officially registered in 1996. Currently, the faculty is trying to achieve Superior Accreditation or A. The number of applicants for the Industrial Engineering Study Program will increase in 2023, reaching 891 prospective students through the SNBT route, but the capacity can only accommodate 56 people. However, it is in demand as the 4th out of 29 study programs at Unsika. The increase in the number of students is not in line with the on-time graduation rate. This study aims to identify the results of grouping students of the Industrial Engineering Study Program (S1) using the 5C-4C (Knowledge Conversion) process and then implement the relationship with learning activities for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 batches. Next, the data is transformed into information by using the 5C knowledge conversion method: contextualization, categorization, calculation, correction, and condensing. In order to build a program that increases the percentage of students who graduate on time, this information is transformed into knowledge utilizing the 4C knowledge conversion method: comparison, consequence, connections, and conversation. In this study, the population focus is on students of the Industrial Engineering Study Program from three batches, namely 2014, 2015, and 2016. The results of grouping Industrial Engineering students using the 5C process provide a deep understanding of the characteristics and factors that affect learning achievement. This provides a solid foundation for designing appropriate programs to increase the on-time graduation rate.

Developing soft skills in the business classrooms of industrial engineering students in Brazil

PurposeIn today’s highly competitive global business environment, there is a growing demand for professionals who possess well-developed soft skills. Such abilities include flexibility, effective communication and other skills. Soft skills are personal attributes and qualities that are more closely related to the emotional side of human beings. Individuals must cultivate and hone soft skills during their undergraduate studies. These skills, also known as interpersonal or non-technical skills, are essential to complement hard skills and pave the way for a thriving career trajectory. Soft skills are developed over the course of one’s career and are indispensable in establishing a strong, professional presence in the corporate or academic realm. The field of engineering is no exception in this regard, and the business approach during the engineering course is of significant relevance. By acquiring soft skills, engineering graduates will become competitive and adaptable professionals capable of handling the current and future challenges of the job market. The purpose of this study is to investigate the soft skills that students perceive as being better developed during their business classrooms in the engineering course and identify areas for improvement in the business education process.Design/methodology/approachThe research method consisted in four different phases from variables identification to statistical analyses. Then, as part of this approach a structured questionnaire was administered at the end of the engineering course, where students rated their perception of the degree of development of each of the soft skills covered in the course on a scale of zero to ten. The collected data were analysed using multivariate analysis techniques, including factorial analysis.FindingsThe results of the study demonstrate that the set of skills acquired by individuals in business classrooms pursuing a degree in industrial engineering is in high demand by potential employers. Such skills are deemed essential for the successful operation of businesses in modern-day industries. The findings of this research validate the significant role that industrial engineering students play in fulfilling the requirements of the job market and pave the way to meaningful insights on how to approach this topic during the business education process in engineering courses.Practical implicationsThe findings bring about significant insights for national educational councils and ministries, universities and educational stakeholders in the process of updating, rethinking and implementing new curricula criteria in higher education, particularly in the Latin American context.Originality/valueThis paper enriches the literature by assessing the development of soft skills of engineering students in the Latin American context. The research reinforces the importance of developing soft skills aligned with those required for the context of current and future labour markets.

The Perception of Undergraduate Students From Different Educational Systems on Sustainability

Sustainable education is key to advancing environmental awareness and global responsibility. Institutional procedures can provide pressure points and opportunities to help foster the mainstreaming of sustainable development. This study aims to analyze how higher-level educational institutions influence environmental awareness and global responsibility in engineering students by evaluating the perception and knowledge of sustainability issues in three universities with different educational systems. This study considers the results of a questionnaire from a sample of 620 industrial engineering students from a Higher Education Institution in northern Mexico. The application of the instrument was random among students from the fourth to ninth semester. The survey included items on demographic aspects, behavior, knowledge, attitudes, and how the educational institution fosters sustainable practices. Only 16% understand sustainable development in the three axes, and 50% recognize that they play an essential role in promoting a sustainable culture. The results show that students do not clearly understand the scope and environmental benefits of implementing, creatively and assertively, environmental innovation through savings and optimization in the matter, time, and natural resources. The findings offer an opportunity for educational institutions to raise awareness and incorporate new measures and strategies to implement sustainability among their students.

Developing EFL Critical Reading Aids: Project-Based Learning Activities for Electrical Industrial Engineering Students

The Independent Learning and Independent Campus (MBKM) curriculum for vocational education provided learning experiences for students. However, the reading material conducted had not reached the curriculum target. Thus, this study aimed to develop critical reading material and worksheets based on the MBKM curriculum. The development procedure was designed in three stages: defining, designing, and developing for 3-D aids. The research resources employed were validation sheets for critical reading aids and semi-observation sheets to provide student activity during PjBL field trial. The results of this study were project-based learning (PjBL) used to construct English language learning aids for the syllabus and coursework units, including worksheets for critical reading. Hence, this learning aid could slightly enhance students' reading competence, which could lead them to have soft and hard skills as well as meet the MBKM curriculum target.

Startup founders: university’s role and entrepreneur’s intention–action gap in emerging markets

Purpose This study aims to analyze the university environment’s role in the intention–action gap (IAG)of highly successful startup founders in an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach Using multiple regression analysis, this study analyzed data collected from 314 founders representing 99 successful startups (289 valid observations), renowned for their high funding and value operating in an emerging market, Brazil. Findings The results demonstrate that extracurricular activities and exchange programs lead to a reduced IAG while living in a significant economic center extends it. Computer science and industrial engineering students show reduced IAGs. Studying together with future co-founders also leads to reduced gaps. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the microfoundations theory by presenting new interactions between students and the university environment that influence entrepreneurial action. Limitations are related to the sample, limited to Brazilian founders and selected only through venture capital firms’ filters. Practical implications This study also provides practical insights to the universities’ leaders on how they can create programs that improve the rate of startup creation, potentially leading to successful companies. Originality/value This study investigates the association between the university role and the entrepreneur’s IAG in emerging markets. The entrepreneur’s IAG is still a relatively new phenomenon explored in entrepreneurship. Even less understanding and limited empirical data exist on successful startups from emerging markets. This study drew on the microfoundations literature to answer how universities in emerging markets could address specific resources and entrepreneurship programs to reduce the IAG among students and alumni.

Analysis of Mental Workload and Fatigue Level in Online Learning during the Pandemic among Industrial Engineering Students (A Case Study at Buana Perjuangan University of Karawang)

Adjustments in online learning systems during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an increase in mental workload and fatigue levels among students. This study aims to determine the influence of independent factors and the relationship between mental workload and fatigue levels among Industrial Engineering students during online learning. The research methods used were NASA-TLX and SOFI. The results show a significant influence of marital status on the level of mental workload with a p-value of 0.016, while there is no significant influence of student status and gender with p-values of 0.435 and 0.210. However, there is a significant influence of student status and gender on fatigue level with p-values of 0.008 and 0.000, while marital status has a significant influence with a p-value of 0.326. The correlation test results show that in the NASA-TLX method, 6 pairs of elements have a significant relationship with a p-value of 0.000, while the remaining 8 pairs of elements do not have a significant relationship with p > 0.05. Furthermore, the SOFI method shows all elements have a significant relationship with a p-value of 0.000. The findings of this study can serve as evaluation for institutions to create effective and successful online learning.

Towards 5.0 skills acquisition for students in industrial engineering: the role of learning factories

In recent years, there has been an increasing transition towards the Industry 5.0 paradigm, which focuses on technology and sustainability but also on the resilience and human-centricity of the production and logistics processes. These changes require investment in equipment, process change, and new skills. To avoid the mismatch between the skills required by industry and the skills offered by university courses, recently, learning factories (LFs) have been spread worldwide, aiming at promoting hand-on learning approaches to manufacturing, logistics and technological processes. This paper illustrates how LFs can support the development of contents and competencies useful in the transition to Industry 5.0 in the industrial engineering courses. Starting from the description of a LF installed in Italy, this study presents a systematisation of the contents that can be addressed by adopting LF in the design of learning modules specifically facing the requirements and skills of the different Industry 5.0 areas.

Innovative Teaching Method of Circularity Design for Sustainable Manufacturing Systems: an Application on Urban Factories

Laws to mitigate the impacts of the industries and responsible consumption trends have been pushing manufacturers to integrate sustainability in their business models. In this context, circular economy and sustainable manufacturing have become key interests for manufacturers, and thus should be included in higher education curricula for industrial engineering students. However, tools and sources for these new subjects are scarce. Such multidisciplinary topics require practical innovative teaching approaches with suitable evaluation approaches. Such a proposal is presented in this paper to define a set of pedagogical specifications for both hard and soft skills required to design sustainable and circular proposals for urban factories. First, the students are required to define the scope of impact mitigation through the interpretation of life cycle assessment (LCA) results for a case study. Then, a roleplay has been developed with the objective of improving sustainability using sustainable manufacturing practices and circular economy strategies. The design phase is supported by a package of databases and instructions, alongside tools and templates for expected deliverables including LCA and sustainable business model canvas. To enable innovation and design thinking, feedbacks have been given to students on a regular basis with the aim to improve outcomes prior to the final deliverable. Evaluation has been conducted through an oral presentation in front of academic and specialized external experts, followed by a discussion and a deliberation. This proposal has been tested in a class of 40 industrial engineering students during a semester for a course dedicated to urban factories. All groups have successfully achieved the specifications of the course, and have demonstrated additional soft skills such as teamwork, time management, and effective presentation.

The Effect of Mental Fatigue on the Spatial Ability of University Students

Spatial abilities are divided into two, namely spatial orientation and spatial visualization. In the field of engineering, especially Industrial Engineering, spatial abilities are usually used in the design process. The use of spatial orientation abilities is influenced by mental activity. Thus, mental fatigue will influence the application of spatial orientation abilities. Mental fatigue among students is usually influenced by academic workload. This research was conducted to determine the effect of academic workload and AX-CPT treatment on the spatial abilities of industrial engineering students. This research involved 40 respondents who were divided into two groups. The research was carried out with mental fatigue engineering using the AX-Continuous Performance Test for 20 minutes for one group of respondents before taking a spatial ability measurement test using the Spatial Orientation Test (SOT) while the other group was not given the AX-Continuous Performance Test. After taking the test, respondents will fill out a survey regarding academic workload. The test was carried out using multiple linear regression with a p-value of 0.814 so there was no influence from the academic workload and AX-CPT treatment on the spatial abilities of industrial engineering students

The Conceptualizing Learning Agility of University Students in the COVID-19 Era

COVID–19 caused schools and universities to change their regular program to online learning. Online learning requires the student to be agile and engaged in the learning process. This paper investigated the impact of goal orientation, openness to experience, and psychological safety toward learning agility on university students. This research used PLS–SEM to analyze the relationships among learning agility constructs. The author conducted quantitative research by developing an online survey using questionnaires from the previously widely used and well–validated instrument. The participants of this study are 206 industrial engineering students of Telkom University, Indonesia. The instrument was fulfilled to what extent the participant agreed with the statement using a six–point Likert scale. A significant relationship was found between learning agility factors: goal orientation, openness to experience, and psychological safety toward learning agility. It was found that goal orientation has a large effect size on learning agility. Thus, it played a central role in the model. Future studies should be conducted with a larger sample with several individual attributes. It may determine whether individual attributes predict difference variation of learning agility. The differences could be examined by making group–specific comparisons.

Human Machine Interface-Based Control Training Kit as Innovative Learning Media to Enhance Students’ Automation Control Skills in the Industry 4.0 Era

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Human-Machine Interface-based control (HMI-BC) training kit as an innovative learning media in enhancing the Automation Control Skills (ACSs) of Industrial Electrical Engineering (IEE) students in the Industry 4.0 Era. The study focuses on evaluating the students' ACSs in the Electrical Machine Control Course (EMCC) after using the HMI-BC training kit as a practical learning media. The research adopts a quasi-experimental design with a One-Group Pre-test and Post-test design. The student’s ACSs data is collected using a performance assessment instrument. The impact of the HMI-BC training kit in enhancing ACSs was evaluated based on the differential analysis of pre-test and post-test scores using the paired-sample t-test. Furthermore, the effect size of the HMI-BC training kit on the learning process was determined using Cohen's d effect size analysis. The results reveal a significant improvement in the students' ACSs as evaluated through the assessment of the performance indicators. Based on the evaluation, the findings demonstrate a notable enhancement in students' ACSs. The HMI-BC Training Kit, developed to align with the characteristics of the learning material and industrial advancements, proves to be effective in enhancing students' ACSs, aligning with the evolving needs of the industry. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating the HMI-BC Training Kit in the learning process of motor control to equip students with relevant automation control competencies, ultimately preparing them for the industrial demands of the future.

Study on Predicting University Student Performance Based on Course Correlation

Performance prediction has proven to be an effective method for monitoring learning progress, managing student performance, and enhancing teaching quality. In an effort to analyze and predict students' grades in colleges and universities, a comprehensive database of student information is utilized along with big data technology to mine the correlation between courses. To achieve this, a student performance prediction model (SPCA) based on course association is proposed. The model selects 29 course grades from industrial engineering students in a particular school's class of 2018-2020. The courses are then clustered into three categories: mathematical computation, general and professional fundamentals, and practical application. This clustering is accomplished using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm. Subsequently, the Apriori algorithm is employed to mine association rules among the courses. Finally, a decision tree algorithm is utilized to predict the grades of previous courses within the same category, based on the association rules discovered. The outcomes of this research can optimize course scheduling, assist students in planning their study plans, and provide practical reference value for improving teaching quality and teaching management.

The Affecting Factors of Students' Attitudes Toward the Use of a Virtual Laboratory: A Study in Industrial Electrical Engineering

Virtual laboratory (VL) has become increasingly popular in Post-COVID-19 to support practical learning in the remote learning system. The use of VL was responded to by students with different attitudes. This study discusses the factors that influence the perception of Industrial Electrical Engineering (IEE) students in responding to the use of the VL in the learning process of the Electrical Machines Practicum Course. Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM), students’ attitudes toward using VL (are influenced by perceived ease of use (PEU) and perceived usefulness (PU). At the same time, PU also acts as an intervening variable. The research involved IEE students of the Electrical Engineering Department, at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data collection was carried out by survey using a questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using variant-based structural equation modelling (SEM), with partial least square (PLS) or PLS-SEM. The results showed a significant positive effect between PEU and PU from the VL used against A. PU’s role as an intervener was also positive in mediating the effect of PEU on A so it became more prominent. Thus, it can be concluded that PEU and PU are the factors that must be considered in choosing VL to be applied to a practical learning process in the remote learning system.

Development of Computational Thinking through STEM Activities for the Promotion of Gender Equality

In the article, the authors evaluate the computational thinking skills according to gender of a group of male and female students of industrial engineering and systems engineering from universities located in the Andean region of Peru; the five key skills were evaluated: abstraction, decomposition, generalization, algorithmic design, and evaluation. To strengthen computational thinking, activities related to agriculture, livestock, the environment, safety, and education were proposed, which are of interest to the community where the students live. The research methodology followed is quasi-experimental of the post-test type with intentional non-probabilistic sampling. During the development of the activities, the students used microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators; thus, they also used block-based programming to implement hardware and software prototypes. The results have shown, according to the inferential analysis, that there are no significant differences between male and female students in any of the computational thinking skills. These results were due to the educational strategy applied in the development of STEM activities, which focused on solving real problems in the student community and generated the same enthusiasm in female and male students compared to other activities that only generated motivation in male students.

The Influence of Immersive and Collaborative Virtual Environments in Improving Spatial Skills

The use of Virtual Reality (VR) is growing in popularity in educational contexts. In this work, we present a novel software application based on immersive VR in which users can interact simultaneously with a model in a shared virtual scene and maintain audiovisual communication. The 3D model-building activity within the application was designed to improve spatial skills. Twenty-nine industrial engineering students completed the modeling activity in groups of two or three. Post-test scores showed significant improvement over pre-test scores for both spatial tests used to measure the effectiveness of the instrument in improving spatial skills. Participants rated the application favorably in terms of usability and functionality. Results suggest that spatial training in a collaborative immersive virtual environment has the potential to be an effective approach to improving spatial skills.

Research on Talent Cultivating Pattern of Industrial Engineering Considering Smart Manufacturing

In-depth exploration of the theory and technological applications of smart manufacturing (SM) is lacking in the current talent training model for industrial engineering (IE) majors, and there is a lack of practical education for SM environments. This makes it difficult for students of traditional IE majors to adapt to the modern trend of industrial intelligence and meet the needs of market demand and enterprise development. Therefore, how to cultivate IE talents for SM has become an urgent problem for IE majors to solve. To this end, this paper proposes a new “SM+IE” talent training model, aiming to cultivate more high-quality composite application talents. This model is based on the Lean Manufacturing course and analyzes the effect of the training mode of SM. Secondly, we used the topic of “Sorting Efficiency Improvement” to verify the effectiveness of the new talent training model. The materials were divided into three types: large, medium, and small, and the materials were sorted using traditional IE practices and smart manufacturing-oriented practices. Finally, interviews were conducted with the participants, and both teachers and students indicated that the learning effect of this teaching reform practice was significantly better than that of the traditional IE teaching mode. The results show that the new talent training model improved not only the application and practical skills of the IE students, but also their teamwork and leadership skills.

Design and implementation of a game-based activity to promote learning of game theory

Game theory, an interdisciplinary field that explores interactions among entities in strategic scenarios, is paramount for understanding how individuals make decisions in interactive situations. This paper outlines the development and evaluation of a playful exercise to facilitate understanding fundamental concepts such as dominant and dominated strategies and Nash equilibrium, employing a 'design thinking' methodology. An empirical evaluation was conducted with 76 Industrial Engineering students from the Universidad Industrial de Santander, dividing them into four teams representing companies vying for customers. The teams assessed payoff matrices and made marketing decisions, utilizing a colored die to eliminate non-advantageous strategies. Findings indicate a significant increase in interest in game theory, with 86% of participants expressing a preference for this method compared to conventional classes. Furthermore, 81% desired to incorporate this activity into their regular courses, while 76% applied previous knowledge during the training. An average improvement of 17% in correct responses suggests that the playful exercise effectively facilitates the assimilation of key concepts in game theory among university students. This study underscores the potential of integrating active activities based on game theory to enrich the learning process in an academic context.

The Training of Design Thinking Process in New Product Development

The current era of globalization has made technological developments faster, which has forced manufacturers to be able to present innovations in the products they produce that can answer customer needs. The Design Thinking Process is an iterative process in which we seek to understand the user to identify the right strategy. To answer this challenge, Design Thinking Process training was conducted for UNSERA Industrial Engineering Students. From the results of the training conducted, the participants already knew about Design Thinking, the steps for implementing Design Thinking, and the implementation of Design Thinking in several industries that support problem-solving.
