STUDY OF GENERATIONAL COHORTS OF GRADUATES OF THE DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF OAXACA IN TIMES OF COVID-19

In this work, the generational cohorts were analyzed through the analysis and synthesis of the institute's databases through the use of Excel software, advanced filters and dynamic tables, thus obtaining the number of industrial engineering graduates from the year 2012 to 2017, it an analytical table is presented of the school trajectory of the industrial engineering students of the Technological Institute of Oaxaca, however it is compared to graduates of previous generations of the same institution, the impact of the current pandemic is analyzed and a perspective of future ones is proposed generations in terms of future problems that intervene in the number of graduated students and number of graduated graduates.

Teaching and learning of industry 4.0: expectations, drivers, and barriers from a knowledge management perspective

ABSTRACT This paper aimed at (i) identifying the expectations, drivers, and barriers for the teaching and learning in Industry 4.0 (I4.0), and (ii) verifying how they contribute to the knowledge management (KM) in I4.0. For that, we carried out an exploratory, qualitative study in which we collected data through semi-structured interviews with 21 graduate students who coursed an I4.0 48-hour subject in an Industrial Engineering graduate programme. In the content analysis of these data, we framed the identified commonalities according to the four main KM activities: creation, retrieval, transfer, and application. We identified four main drivers, expectations and barriers for teaching and learning I4.0. Results also indicated that those expectations, drivers, and barriers might be related to each other, concurrently affecting more than one KM activity. These results supported the formulation of four propositions for future theory testing and validation, raising the awareness of instructors and lecturers regarding those aspects.

A gap study between industry expectations and current competencies of bachelor’s degree graduates in industrial engineering in Thailand 4.0 era: A case study of industrial engineering graduates of Khon Kaen University

The purpose of this research is to study the gap between industry expectations and the current competencies of bachelor’s degree industrial engineering graduates in Khon Kaen University in Thailand 4.0 era so that the research results of this study may be used as the guideline for improvement of the existing Bachelor of Engineering Degree program in Industrial Engineering in Khon Kaen University. A literature survey was conducted to determine appropriate indicators for assessing Thailand’s readiness for Industry 4.0. These indicators were further screened by 17 industrial experts using the Delphi method. Twenty-five competency performance indicators were finally adopted and sent in questionnaires to 71 industrial factories and 60 industrial engineering engineers freshly graduated from Khon Kaen University to rate the competency indicators with scores ranging from 1–5. The data were collected and analyzed to determine the gaps between the industry expectations and the current competencies of the graduates. The results of the analysis revealed that the greatest gaps were found, in descending order, delivery management, data usage, and data analytics in the usage phase. These are the areas which must be closely considered when the study program is revised. On the other hand, the smallest gaps were found, in ascending order, for innovation management, cloud usage, ICT add-on functionalities and technology in production, indicating the strength of the industrial engineering degree program of the case study university.

BALANCING EMPLOYMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP REQUIREMENTS IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION

The purpose of higher learning is to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to support their respective professional careers. Ultimately, each career follows the employment or entrepreneurship path. The higher learning curriculum is generally more structured for the employment path, even though the global economy of the 21st century is fast becoming largely entrepreneurial. This work investigates the scope of entrepreneurship in the context of industrial engineering graduates. The aim is to develop a method to determine quantitatively the importance of focusing on entrepreneurial competence development in engineering students, and to propose a strategy to address the evident need for a greater emphasis on entrepreneurial competencies in graduate industrial engineers, based on market data. The approach is to analyse entrepreneurial projects as advertised by on-line freelance platforms, to determine the general characteristic skill-level requirements and perspectives on opportunity and remuneration. A strategy to enhance graduate entrepreneurial competency is also presented.

An Innovation Framework to Integrate Engineering Standards into Industrial Engineering Graduate Curriculum

Abstract The importance of standards is that they provide product manufacturers with clear material, mechanical, and dimensional requirements coupled with specific quality assurance and test methods used to ensure their quality and functionality. Manufacturing-related material standards provide a consensus regarding desired properties between both manufacturers and customers. Moreover, these standards provide analysis methods to measure the properties and leads to standard manufacturing procedures that ensure the quality. To fulfill the need of real-world systems, a curriculum innovation was planned and implemented into the industrial engineering graduate program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville with the aim to integrate manufacturing-related materials and quality management standards into graduate engineering education through innovative course modules and a certificate program. There are four major components in the framework, including (1) course module development on manufacturing-related material standards, (2) course module development on manufacturing-related quality management standards, (3) graduate-level certificate program development, and (4) industrial experience sharing through webinars. ASTM and ISO standards were introduced to graduate students with hands-on experiences on applying standards to real-world case studies. It creates a systematic framework to strengthen graduate students’ education and learning about manufacturing-related materials and quality management standards and standardization. Student surveys were used to collect their feedback, which show very positive impact on the students’ knowledge and interests in standards and standardization.

Analisis Profil Lulusan Program Studi Teknik Industri Berdasarkan Kebutuhan Pasar Kerja

The purpose of this study is to find out the profile of college graduates currently required by the labor market. The graduate profile to be analyzed is the graduate profile of the field of industrial engineering based on the needs of the labor market. In addition to getting an overview of the graduate profile, this study also wants to analyze the capabilities that the industrial engineering graduate must have with regard to the profile of the identified graduates. To analyze the ability of graduates, then used K-DIKTI (Higher Education Curriculum) as a reference, that is related to; attitudes or values, general ability, special abilities, and knowledge. To identify the profile of graduates and the capabilities that must be possessed, in this study using job advertisements that are online. The analytical method used is descriptive analysis method. This method is used because it can help in arranging the data obtained from job advertisements, so that data can describe the meaningful information. The results of this study are expected to provide additional information for the study program when going to do recuriculla. From the results of data collection there are several graduate profiles for industrial engineering study programs. Of the several profiles needed, the most needed is as an engineer, which is around 27.27%, then the second is PPIC, around 21.21%.

A Gap Study between Employers’ Expectations in Thailand and Current Competence of Master’s Degree Students in Industrial Engineering under Industry 4.0

Abstract Industry 4.0 is an era in which the manufacturing industry has adopted digital technologies and the Internet to enable smart manufacturing system, machines used in the production now can communicate with each other and exchange information between each other, and the machinery used in the manufacturing process is more modern and precise. Therefore, educational institutions should develop the curriculum to produce qualified graduates with the knowledge required for the Industry 4.0 era, especially Industrial Engineering graduates who are directly related to the industry sector. The purpose of this research is to collect the data for the Master of Industrial Engineering (MSIE) curriculum development. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is used to rank the indicators of knowledge that is important to the employment of graduates with a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, and study the gap between the expectations of employers and the ability of the current MSIE students of Khon Kaen University. The results of the study reveal that the first indicators that are most important to the employment of MSIE graduates is the knowledge of Industry 4.0 strategy and the knowledge that the students should have developed are the collaboration of humans and robots, big data analytics, real time data usage and databased decision making.

Integrating the Concept of Industry 4.0 by Teaching Methodology in Industrial Engineering Curriculum

The movement to digitally transform Saudi Arabia in all sectors has already begun under the “Vision 2030” program. Consequently, renovating and standardizing production and manufacturing industries to compete with global challenges is essential. The fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) triggered by the development of information and communications technologies (ICT) provides a baseline for smart automation, using decentralized control and smart connectivity (e.g., Internet of Things). Industrial engineering graduates need to have acquaintance with this industrial digital revolution. Several industries where the spirit of Industry 4.0 has been embraced and have already implemented these ideas yielded gains. In this paper, a roadmap containing an academic term course based on the concept of Industry 4.0, which our engineering graduates passed through, is presented. At first, an orientation program to students elaborating on the Industry 4.0 concept, its main pillars, the importance of event-driven execution, and smart product manufacturing techniques. Then, various tasks in developing a learning factory were split and assigned among student groups. Finally, the evaluation of student potential in incorporating the Industry 4.0 concept was analyzed. This methodology led to their professional skill development and promoted students’ innovative ideas for the manufacturing sector.

Demand for Competences of Industrial Engineering Graduates in the Context of Automation of Manufacturing Processes

Abstract Automation and robotization is considered to be a key determinant of the development and innovation in manufacturing enterprises. But the scope and range of its implementation is changing due to ongoing fourth industrial revolution towards Industry 4.0. The objective of the paper is to analyze the needs of manufacturing enterprises with regard to automation and robotization but from the perspective of desired competences of Industrial Engineering graduates. To achieve the objective the results of industrial survey are analyzed. The survey was made among Thai and EU companies within the project titled Curriculum Development of Master’s Degree Program in Industrial Engineering for Thailand Sustainable Smart Industry -MSIE4.0. The results show that the requirements towards graduates are changing especially with reference to real-time control of manufacturing process, big data use and mobile devices use to steer and feed with the information the management and manufacturing processes.

An initiative for integrating problem-based learning into a lean manufacturing course of an industrial engineering graduate program

Abstract The interest in improving the quality of engineering education is widely deemed. Due to an increasingly worldwide competition, Lean Manufacturing (LM) has been a relevant subject among industrial engineering graduate programs. Despite the advances in teaching LM principles and techniques, the practical character inherent to LM undermines learning and development of students. In this sense, this study aims at demonstrating a proposal to enhance LM learning in an industrial engineering program. It is a blended proposal that combines traditional teaching methods to problem-based learning (PBL) approach based on real problems of companies undergoing a lean implementation. A first phase of the proposal introduction is illustrated with an example of introducing it in a Brazilian federal university. The findings indicate that PBL may be an effective complementary method for LM learning, especially if graduate students are exposed to real problems in companies that are undergoing a lean implementation and related it to the current body of literature.

EMPLOYABILITY OF ENGINEERING GRADUATES OF ONE ASIAN UNIVERSITY AS BASIS FOR CURRICULUM REVIEW

This tracer study intended to assess the relevance of the undergraduates’ curricula in industrial engineering, electronics engineering and mechanical engineering as well as the knowledge and skills acquired by the graduates to their employment; identify the personal and professional characteristics and job placement of the engineering graduates of the said degree programs and the school-related factors associated with their employment. This tracer study used the quantitative and descriptive research design. Results showed that the greater percentage of the respondents landed on first job related to their course completed; obtained their first jobs within 6 months; have stayed in their first job almost more than one year and low salary is the number one reason who left their first job. 
 Mathematics subjects were considered very relevant; Electronics contributed the most relevant subject to the present job of Electronics Engineering Graduates; Time and Motion Study for Industrial Engineering Graduates; and Power Plant Engineering for Mechanical Engineering Graduates. The graduate – respondents considered the intellectual skills developed by the University have contributed much to their present employment. The work – related values most especially the honesty and truthfulness were considered very much relevant to the present employment of the employed graduate-respondents.

An investigation of industry expectations of industrial engineering graduates: A case study of graduate development programmes in South African universities

During 2008 and 2009, post-apartheid South Africa and the global community experienced major economic turbulence, bringing into focus the need for skills development across the major South African economic sectors to resuscitate its failing economy. The solutions lay in organisations re-evaluating their current operational strategies by streamlining their organisations, and adopting aggressive, lean, and cost-saving approaches to remain competitive. The study introduced the need to address this issue by exploring the environments that play a role in the quality of life in South Africa. A qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis approach was used to establish the skills gap between the business market and training institutes, in an effort to alleviate the negative effects of the current state of the economy. The need for skills growth and for cost-cutting, cost-saving, and an optimisation skill a skill descriptively and applicably seen in industrial engineering is apparent. The role of graduate institutions in facilitating the growth of human capital development in the work environment has become a critical factor in South Africa, aimed at improving the productivity and economic growth of the country. In this paper, the focus is on three main areas of discussion: the institutional environment of students; exploring the student-lecturer relationship; and the work environment. The study highlights the influence these three environments have on industrial engineering skills and competencies attained by industrial engineering university student graduates, and how this ultimately creates a way for the South African economy to grow.

The Role of Internship in Transversal Competence Development of Industrial Engineering Graduates

In the context of implementation of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) in Higher Education Area, building and assessment of skills in general and of transversal competences in particular is a key issue, which has not been entirely resolved yet. This paper presents a methodology developed by the authors, which refers to the contribution of the practice to building the transversal competences in graduates of higher education technical institutes, applied during a three-year program involving a relatively large number of students. Identifying the contribution of practical internship schemes to the acquisition of transversal competencies is an essential component of the overall evaluation of such skills. The results have shown that graduates who took part in special internship programs have attained a higher rate of insertion in the labor market. Moreover, the practical experience gained during bachelor study programs represented an important premise for the development of EQF level 7 transversal competences of the graduates enrolled in different Master programs.

The effect of engineering cooperative experience on graduate starting salaries

The paper explores the effect of cooperative engineering experience on graduate starting salaries for all civil, industrial, mechanical, and electrical engineering graduates for two consecutive academic years. The primary data (gathered from various sources) were used to conduct 12 major statistical analyses. The tests of significance give rather inconclusive results in terms of a correlation between cooperative experience and the starting salaries of graduates. The strongest relationship existed for industrial engineering graduates, and the weakest relationship emerged for civil engineering majors. The mechanical and electrical graduates ranked second and third, respectively.

Integrating microcomputers into the industrial engineering curriculum

Abstract Microcomputers have brought about many changes in industry over the past five years. Industrial Engineering graduates must be able to operate effectively in this changing environment. This paper reports on the evolutionary changes in the Industrial Engineering and Management curriculum at Oklahoma State University. Current planning efforts are also presented.

Online assessment of the value of information for searchers of a bibliographic data base

The object of the experiment described in this paper was to assess the value of information for individual searchers in a realistic search environment. An additive linear function, which combined the ratings of information features provided by searchers, was used to model how humans value information. Twenty Industrial Engineering graduate students and faculty, who were attempting to satisfy a genuine information need by searching a data base of technical literature on Operations Research, served as experimental subjects. Included in the data analysis are a comparison of two alternative retrieval methods, an evaluation of how well humans are able to estimate the relevance of a document from the document's features, and an investigation of the value function components (features and coefficients) and functional form.
