Including gender dimension in operations management teaching

Purpose: This paper aims at introducing the importance and the relevant concepts and tools for including gender dimension in teaching, with a special focus in the Operations Management knowledge field.Design/methodology/approach: The methodology is based on a literature review and on the knowledge and experience of the authors in teaching in the field of Operations Management and designing and implementing trainings and pilot programs for including gender dimension in teaching and.Findings: Even if there already exist some general guidelines for including gender dimension in teaching and in some countries the law requires the inclusion of gender dimension in high education, the effective inclusion of gender dimension in teaching is still in a very preliminary stage. Moreover, there are not specific studies focused on the Operations Management field.Research limitations/implications: Even if the authors have wide experience in the field, the proposals have not been applied to many courses so there is no empirical evidence of the achieved results.Practical implications: The paper can be useful for people teaching in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management courses’, as it gives not only some general guidelines and concepts but also specific examples that can be directly applied to their courses.Social implications: Including gender dimension in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management courses, which are still male dominated, can help achieving the SDG 5, which is focused on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Specifically, including gender dimension in teaching allow breaking stereotypes, changing the image of the knowledge field, empowering female students and giving both men and women tools for including the gender dimension in their professional careers.Originality/value: There exist some general guidelines for including gender dimension in teaching but, to the best of our knowledge, there is no any specific work that is focused on the Operations Management knowledge field.

Preparing Future Designers for their Role in Co‐Design: Student Insights on Learning Co‐Design

AbstractThe state‐of‐the‐art literature indicates an increasing need for co‐design education as it is imperative to equip future designers with the co‐designing mindset. This derives from the significance of involving ‘people with lived experience’ in co‐design processes to better meet their needs. However, the traditional design education system seems to include mostly individual designing skills, causing a lack of skills in design students to facilitate the active participation of people in co‐design. This paper reports on a case study carried out in a third‐year Bachelor industrial design engineering course with design students (n = 32) and design educators (n = 4) to find an effective and efficient way of preparing future designers for their role in co‐design and to gain insights into design students' experience with learning about co‐design. As an instructional method, a co‐design workshop including the game‐play, game‐modding and game‐design approaches is introduced. The obstacles and confusion of the design students regarding co‐design and co‐design education, which they have documented throughout the year on their personalised logbooks, are explained to eliminate them in the future for smoother incorporation of co‐design education into design education curricula. Lastly, for future designers' mindfulness of co‐design and their role as facilitators suggestions are provided such as accreditation of curriculum activities regarding co‐design education.

Towards 5.0 skills acquisition for students in industrial engineering: the role of learning factories

In recent years, there has been an increasing transition towards the Industry 5.0 paradigm, which focuses on technology and sustainability but also on the resilience and human-centricity of the production and logistics processes. These changes require investment in equipment, process change, and new skills. To avoid the mismatch between the skills required by industry and the skills offered by university courses, recently, learning factories (LFs) have been spread worldwide, aiming at promoting hand-on learning approaches to manufacturing, logistics and technological processes. This paper illustrates how LFs can support the development of contents and competencies useful in the transition to Industry 5.0 in the industrial engineering courses. Starting from the description of a LF installed in Italy, this study presents a systematisation of the contents that can be addressed by adopting LF in the design of learning modules specifically facing the requirements and skills of the different Industry 5.0 areas.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND INDUSTRY 4.0 INTO INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING COURSES

Objective: This article presents a theoretical study of how the concepts of the Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (i4.0) can be incorporated and introduced into industrial engineering courses and how they can help the implementation of circular economy business models. Design/methodology/approach: A theoretical analysis was conducted on a set of articles identified through a search based on the combination of keywords 'circular economy,' 'CE,' 'industrial engineering,' 'industrial engineer,' 'i4.0,' and 'Industry 4.0.' Two databases, Scopus and Web of Science, were consulted initially. A total of 29 articles were selected and utilized for the subsequent analysis. Following a comprehensive review of these 29 articles, we sought to determine how the concepts of the circular economy and i4.0 can be integrated into industrial engineering courses and their potential contributions to the implementation of circular economy business models. Results: The paper provides an overview of how the concepts of the CE and i4.0 can be incorporated into the curriculum of undergraduate industrial engineering courses, utilizing an interdisciplinary and cross-cutting approach. Furthermore, it was possible to verify that there is a strong and feasible relationship between the concepts of the circular economy and Industry 4.0. For the effective implementation of these concepts, there is a necessity to train professionals and the use of digital technologies in favor of the circular economy. Originality/value: The paper brings as contribution, the discussion about the importance of incorporating the concept of circular economy and i4.0 into the courses of future engineers, who work mainly in the management of production processes and management of resources. This is a theoretical study, not an empirical one, and perhaps this is the main limitation of the research. However, despite being theoretical, it brings as a practical contribution an important discussion about the need to train professionals, even in their undergraduate training, and the use of digital technologies in favor of the circular economy.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the teachers’ work from the industrial engineering course at IFMG-Bambuí

Sars-Cov-2 pandemic mobilized emergency and immediate actions in all sectors and societies and affected the dynamics of all citizens' life. In brazil, one of the first changes implemented in the educational sector was the introduction of emergency distance education, done at the touch of box. Studies carried out have shown the effects of the pandemic on the work of teachers of elementary schools and prioritize the precarity of Brazilian education. Scarcity of study of this nature was observed at the higher level. In this sense, the following research question was elected: what are the impacts of social isolation on the work of teachers of the production engineering course at IFMG-Bambui during social isolation? The objective of the study is to answer this question by developing a qualitative research, together with 32 teachers of that course. Among the results, the changes and adaptations made by the teachers to carry out the work during social isolation, as well as the effects on their physical, mental and emotional health, were found. The study generated information to deepen on the subjects that link to teaching work in uncertainty times and developed fully in digital and remote mode.

The EMI content lecturer as a street-level bureaucrat: discretionary actions and coping mechanisms in micro-level language policy-as-produced

ABSTRACT The field of English as a Medium-of-Instruction (EMI) research in tertiary education is undergoing a context-specific turn, focusing attention on how the official medium of instruction interacts with local languages, as well as the multi-faceted interplay between national and/or institutional language policies and classroom practice. This article reports on findings from linguistic ethnographic fieldwork at a Belgian higher education institution: for two semesters, the interactions between a lecturer and his students in an English-medium Industrial Design Engineering course were observed. The lecturer’s micro-level didactic choices are studied through the lens of Lipsky’s Street-Level Bureaucracy. This reveals a systematic pattern of on-the-ground language policy construction which is evidenced in classroom practice. While the findings of this study problematise the pillarized ‘either/or’ language choices that continue to dominate a polarised language policy debate, they equally underline the micro-level agency of the disciplinary EMI instructors in shaping public policy. For EMI-contexts more generally, our analysis suggests the viability and sociolinguistic relevance of an enactment-of-policy-in-interaction perspective which is equally a matter of disciplinary induction. The study of ‘coping mechanisms’ thus becomes an arena for policy development and teacher training.

EVALUATION OF THE FLIPPED CLASSROOM SET-UP FOR FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, CTU-ARGAO, CEBU PHILIPPINES

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated changes in higher education, leading to the adoption of more adaptable, effective, and student-centered educational methods. The flipped classroom, which involves moving information transmission online and utilizing face-to-face class time for active learning, has gained popularity in this context. This study evaluates the readiness of the flipped classroom set-up for face-to-face classes at the Department of Industrial Engineering, CTU-Argao, Cebu, Philippines, as a prevention measure against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. A modified survey questionnaire from the study of Youhasan, P. et la., (2021) was adopted and used in the study. The 20-item questionnaire assessed personal readiness, technological readiness, environmental readiness, pedagogical readiness and a checklist was used to evaluate classroom facilities. The analysis of the survey results was conducted using quantitative statistics. The study found that the flipped classroom model has a high possibility of being implemented based on respondents’ positive perception of its technological readiness. Respondents expressed willingness and interest in engaging and developing their skills in this setup. However, concerns were identified in terms of environmental readiness, particularly with access to computers and high-speed internet. Pedagogical readiness was also observed, with respondents showing capability to adapt to sudden changes from online classes to flipped classroom setups. The study also highlighted compliance with health protocols in accordance with CHED-DOH Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2021-001. The paper suggests that flipped classrooms can be considered as an alternative or viable solution to the challenges posed by COVID-19, and provides guidance for implementation in an industrial engineering course.

Learning Model of Industrial Control Engineering Based on Augmented Reality

This study aimed to determine the Learning Model of Industrial Control Engineering based on Augmented Reality developed to improve student learning outcomes. This type of research is Research & Development (R&D), with the development stages modified from various existing development models. Data collection techniques were observation and questionnaires. The data analysis technique uses validity analysis and effectiveness analysis. The results obtained from this research were Learning Model of Industrial Control Engineering based on Augmented Reality can improve learning outcomes. The value of the n-gain score in the experimental class is 0.54, which means that there has been an increase in learning outcomes in the medium category. There are two implications of this research. (1) the Learning Model of Industrial Control Engineering based on Augmented Reality is expected to be used as input for other researchers to conduct similar research on other subjects or even in other methods for further research. (2) Implementation of Learning Model of Industrial Control Engineering based on Augmented Reality is expected to be continuously applied as an alternative learning model in Industrial Control Engineering Courses and other subjects.

AN MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION-MAKING BASED COURSE ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK: DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION

Evaluation of the educational process is essential to its development and improvement. This paper aims to create a model for evaluating students’ satisfaction with industrial engineering courses using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tools. The research began with a course evaluation data survey with 28 questions (variables). Then the assessment model was proposed, based on the previously collected data. The suggested assessment model identified the constructs using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Then the extracted variables and the resulting constructs were prioritised using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Next, a structured local questionnaire was drawn up and distributed to industrial engineering students at a Saudi university to validate the developed model. After that, the suggested framework was applied to the data to assess the students’ overall satisfaction with the course. Finally, it was found that the Operations Research Track, of the five current tracks, scored the highest satisfaction rate. This study’s results could be helpful in knowing the importance of MCDM in the evaluation process, as it distinguishes the value of students’ evaluations for the development and growth of the evaluation of educational courses. Supervised Learning Applied to Graduation Forecast of Industrial Engineering Students

<p style="text-align: justify;">The article aims to develop a machine-learning algorithm that can predict student’s graduation in the Industrial Engineering course at the Federal University of Amazonas based on their performance data. The methodology makes use of an information package of 364 students with an admission period between 2007 and 2019, considering characteristics that can affect directly or indirectly in the graduation of each one, being: type of high school, number of semesters taken, grade-point average, lockouts, dropouts and course terminations. The data treatment considered the manual removal of several characteristics that did not add value to the output of the algorithm, resulting in a package composed of 2184 instances. Thus, the logistic regression, MLP and XGBoost models developed and compared could predict a binary output of graduation or non-graduation to each student using 30% of the dataset to test and 70% to train, so that was possible to identify a relationship between the six attributes explored and achieve, with the best model, 94.15% of accuracy on its predictions.</p>

Abstract : This study was conducted to determine student interest in reading in the library Bina Darma with clustering method. The data used in this study is Bina Darma library database that consists of three tables are tables collection, patron tables and tables of visitors who will be selected to be integrated and combined as a data warehouse. Application of data mining to determine the titles of the most demanding of students and courses are most borrowed books and read a book in the library building dharma. The information obtained is that the course is more interested in information systems to borrow and read books compared to the industrial engineering courses. Titles that most interest is the title of the book basics of programming, while the lowest book is the title of students interested in a practical handbook using Microsotf word and cluster categories of books that most interest students are computer science book category books category Indonesian whereas lower.

Service Learning Versus Traditional Project-Based Learning: A Comparison Study in a First Year Industrial and Systems Engineering Course

Service learning involves solving a real community problem while meeting course learning outcomes. Participation in service learning is hypothesized to improve undergraduate student engagement and retention, but little research has been done to measure its impact specifically on beginning engineering students. This study compares two sections of an introduction to industrial and systems engineering course; one with a service learning term project and one with a traditional project-based term project. The service learning project was designed to be a hands-on approach to the material in the project management, communication, and teamwork modules of the course, in addition to giving students the opportunity to practice industrial and systems engineering functions related to their community partner’s defined problem. Surveys, grade data and interviews provide evidence that service learning projects improved students’ perceptions of their preparation for a successful academic and professional career and also lend limited support to improved engagement and retention in engineering compared to the students in the traditional project section.

ANALISA ERGONOMI MAKRO PADA PENGGUNAAN TELEPON GENGGAM (HANDPHONE) DIKALANGAN MAHASISWA BANDUNG

Along with the rapid development of digital technology, electronic technology which is the forerunner of information and communication technology, has been spurred on by developing miniaturization of electronic components, through the creation of integrated circuits, which at its peak gave birth to communication devices in the form of mobile phones (Cellphones / Cellphones). In its use based on macro ergonomics analysis, cell phone use is hindered by these students, giving positive and negative influences. towards its users. In this study a macro ergonomic analysis was carried out on the use of mobile phones among students, especially students of Industrial Engineering courses, Faculty of Engineering, Bandung Raya University. The purpose of this study is to analyze the positive and negative effects on the use of mobile phones among students in terms of macro ergonomics, related to the use of mobile applications in the learning process with the development of Mobile Learning through the SIAKAD and Edlink programs, and their use in relationships in the campus environment. . The research was conducted with a survey research method approach with a quantitative approach. Data obtained from the results of questionnaires that research in the field, interviews and literature studies. The results of the study showed that the results of the questionnaire test showed that the questionnaire had a level of validity of 85% and 89.6%. The results based on macro ergonomic analysis of the positive effect felt by students, in essence, is that mobile phones are very helpful in various learning process activities, academic activities and other activities in the campus environment, which is currently being promoted by the online system. The negative influence of mobile phones among students, is more on the problem of changing attitudes and behaviors of students which leads to consumptive attitudes, lazy to read text books, tend to reduce direct social interaction and less concern for the surrounding environment.

Profile of Supervised Internship Reports of the FT/UFAM Industrial Engineering Course

The article analyzes the profile of the Supervised Internship reports delivered by students of the Industrial Engineering course at the Faculty of Technology of the Federal University of Amazonas (FT/UFAM), to provide useful information to the course department, as well as providing knowledge and reflection on how the discipline has been approached over time. The research is applied, documentary, using descriptive statistics along with data obtained from the collection of internship reports approved between 2008/1 to 2018/1. After analyzing the results, the main conclusions were that the average score of the 469 reports is 8.56, the industry is the segment in which the majority of the internships (76%) were carried out, while the Operations Engineering, and Production Process, Organizational Engineering, Quality Engineering, Logistics, and Work Engineering were the main areas of Industrial Engineering in which the students interned.

How to evaluate Industrial Engineering undergraduate teachers?

In Brazil, teacher evaluation is required by the National Higher System Evaluation System (INEP, 2011). At UFAM, it is done through the student portal, which is considered ineffective, compromising the process of continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The article evaluates the students' level of satisfaction with the quality of the services provided by the teachers who taught discipline for the FT/UFAM Industrial Engineering course, to propose suggestions for improvements. To this end, the UFAM evaluation portal was studied, then a review of performance evaluation articles allowed the development of a questionnaire (Appendix 1) that was applied in 2011 to 112 (70%) students enrolled in the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th periods of this course. After analyzing the data, it was concluded that: a) the UFAM website to evaluate teachers was considered negative by more than 1/3 of the respondents, and the obligation to answer, the excessive amount of questions, the lack of feedback and improvement actions discourage students from responding; b) On the other hand, the application of the questionnaire revealed that the best-evaluated subjects were Special Topics of Industrial Engineering I and II, Management of Technological Innovation, Sanitation Applied to Production, Calculus II, Linear Algebra, Transport Phenomena, and Digital Electronics, most of which were taught by teachers of 2nd and 4th period. For improvement, it is recommended to identify the good teaching and learning practices of these teachers to apply seminars and disseminate them through FT/UFAM.

Participative approach to graduate students evaluate FT/UFAM Services

It has a participatory approach to continuously evaluate the level of satisfaction of Industrial Engineering students with the main services provided at the Faculty of Technology of the Federal University of Amazonas (FT/UFAM). To this end, studies were conducted to learn about existing services at the Faculty and to identify methodologies to assess customer satisfaction, resulting in the creation of a seven-step methodology that allowed veteran students of the Quality Management discipline to develop a questionnaire model with seven requirements and forty-nine items, which was applied to 122 students of the Industrial Engineering Course in June 2010. After the analysis of the results, conclusions and recommendations were generated, among them, it can be stated that the methodology and its data collection model can serve as evaluation tools to contribute to the process of continuous improvement of the services provided at FT/UFAM. Moreover, the methodology proved to be efficient in its application and also to motivate the students, once they felt valued and could understand the importance of participative management in the planning of any organization.

Internships of FT/UFAM Industrial Engineering student

The article identifies the profile of paid internships developed in the last two and a half years by the students of the Industrial Engineering course of the Faculty of Technology of the Federal University of Amazonas. To this end, consulting the records of the Department of Student Assistance (DAEST) of UFAM, responsible for the trainees' contracts, revealed the existence of 107 students who signed contracts to perform internship during this period. Besides, a questionnaire with 3-section and 15-questions (Appendix 1) was applied to students via email, classroom, event, and virtual groups to collect internship information. After collecting and analyzing the data, the following conclusions were reached: more than half of the interns are male, most of them interned in the industrial sector; the average monthly value of the internship scholarships is R $ 1,175, and it was identified Honda and other nine companies that best remunerate their interns; most develop their roles in Operations and Process Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product Engineering or Logistics; the course subjects that most assisted during the internship were: quality management, production planning and control, production system and maintenance management.
