Geometry Optimization of Industry Buildings for Energy-Driven Design Development in Bangladesh

Even though the manufacturing industry consumes roughly 54% of total available energy globally, little consideration has been devoted to optimizing energy in the early stages of industry design, particularly in densely populated cities. With the increased demand for green buildings, energy performance has a greater influence on design results. As a result, this paper provides an envelope optimization technique that can assist architects and computational designers in analyzing the environmental performance of various alternatives and developing optimal design solutions, especially for Bangladesh and the building of these regions. First, an existing industrial site in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital was chosen as a case study, and a hypothetical industry building, as well as its surroundings, were parametrically developed. Then, for the optimization method, the design factors linked to the building envelopes were chosen. Finally, a Multi-objective Optimization (MOO) procedure was utilized for defining performance measures including daylighting, energy and comfort measures, UDI, EUI, and PPD. According to the MOO results, the UDI may be enhanced by 25.286% as compared to the least favorable scenario. Consequently, the EUI may decreased by 38.718 kWh/m2 while the PPD can be increased by 41.78%. The geometric configuration of East, West, North, and South played a significant role when designing the industrial building. According to the analysis, the geometric configuration of a South WWR of 50%, a West WWR of 30%, an East WWR of 70%, and a sill height of 0.75m is the most feasible option. A statistical analysis of design factors and performance measures demonstrated that the window-to-wall ratio, particularly on south walls, has the greatest impact on industrial building design in densely populated areas. The proposed approach is expected to be used by architects and municipal planners to develop design metrics based on simulation results.

A Comparative Analysis and Design of Industrial Building Using Hot Rolled Section and Cold Formed Section for Sustainability

Abstract: Structural Steel is a typical building material utilised in the building sector. Its main function is to serve as the framework for the structure i.e, the portion of the structure that keeps everything else in place. Steel is 100% recyclable, making it one of the greenest materials available. This study conducts a comparative analysis and design of an industrial building, evaluating the sustainability implications of employing hot-rolled and cold-formed steel sections. Examining mechanical properties, life cycle environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness, the research aims to provide insights into the structural and environmental benefits of each section type. By optimizing the integration of hot-rolled and cold-formed sections, the study seeks to enhance overall sustainability, considering factors such as energy consumption and material efficiency. Through case studies, this research offers a concise yet comprehensive exploration of how the combined use of these sections can contribute to environmentally conscious and resource-viable industrial building design. The findings aim to inform industry professionals, architects, and engineers about making sustainable choices in the construction process.

Modular Construction of Industrial Buildings and Lean Thinking—Identifying the Role of Daylight through a Case Study

This research looks at the optimisation of industrial buildings through the application of the principles of lean thinking and philosophy, with an emphasis on daylighting in the design of industrial buildings. With the use of multiparametric analysis tools, we provide a solution for the optimized design of a roof system for the provision of daylight, whilst maximising the benefits and minimising the cost during its lifetime, in different geographic and climatic regions in Greece. An optimisation algorithm has been proposed that improves the selection of the optimal roof opening type and geometry for industrial buildings in different geographical locations. The investigation of a roof system model was based on the maximum performance of daylighting, while reducing unnecessary energy use and cost. To reach our solution, we investigated the sawtooth roofing system in terms of energy cost (cooling, heating, and lighting), geography (orientation, location), and building variables (the opening dimensions and number). This has been achieved through the use of multi-parametric design, computational simulations, genetic algorithms, and the post-processing of results through statistical analysis. The use of natural lighting proved to be an effective sustainability strategy, providing energy savings of up to 20–30%, and offering economic advantages, hence presenting a comprehensive approach that benefits stakeholders and end-users by reducing the thermal loads, cooling requirements, initial HVAC costs, and overall waste. The developed algorithm has identified the optimal opening size and distance as ranging between 10 and 11 m for the conditions examined.

Application of Carbon Nanofiber-Modified Concrete in Industrial Building Design.

In order to explore the influence law and action mechanism of carbon nanofibers on the basic mechanical properties of concrete, the author proposes the mechanical properties and microscopic mechanism of carbon nanofiber-modified concrete. Concrete was prepared with different dosages of carbon nanofibers, and the compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting strength of carbon nanofiber-modified concrete were tested, and the modification mechanism was explored. Experimental results show that an appropriate amount of carbon nanofibers can improve the mechanical properties of concrete. When the dosage is 0.3%, the mechanical properties of carbon nanofiber-modified concrete are the best, and its compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength are increased by 9.2%, 13.2%, and 17.5%, respectively, compared with plain concrete. Carbon nanofibers can form a three-dimensional network structure inside the concrete, which can improve the microscopic morphology of the concrete, enhance the toughness and integrity of the concrete, fill the pore defects inside the concrete, refine the pore size distribution, and consume part of the fracture failure energy when the concrete is damaged.

BIMFlexi-VR: A Virtual Reality Framework for Early-Stage Collaboration in Flexible Industrial Building Design

Integrated industrial building design is an interdisciplinary task, in which planning of flexible building structures requires effective communication and collaboration between all stakeholders already in early design stage. This paper presents BIMFlexi-VR, a collaborative framework which implements a real-time bidirectional link between a parametric modelling component created in Grasshopper for Rhinoceros that performs optimized structural calculations of an industrial building, and an immersive Virtual Reality environment in which the automatically calculated building is visualized. Users of BIMFlexi-VR are able to change parameters defining the outcome of the structural calculation directly inside the virtual environment and see the modified building design together with the associated fitness metrics in a matter of seconds. Providing an efficient and intuitive platform for early exploration of industrial building designs, BIMFlexi-VR enables collaborative decision making and facilitates the creation of more efficient and sustainable industrial constructions.

Daylighting Performance Design for Art Studios of Old Factory Renovation Buildings in Subtropical Regions

In the subtropical zone of China, a large number of old factory buildings rich in industrial historical and cultural value have been transformed into art studios. In the existing research on building renovation, there are still problems such as insufficient lighting, low uniformity, and ignoring the effect of glare in the lighting environment of buildings after transformation. To fill this research gap, this paper provides a daylighting design strategy for these factory buildings in subtropical zones to ensure that the transformed art studios can offer an excellent indoor daylighting environment. Through the control variable method, the window-to-wall ratio, the form of external windows, and the visible light transmittance of glass are set with quantitative and variable values, and a design strategy that meets the requirements of international general daylighting standards is obtained step by step through the simulation. The daylight factor, uniformity, daylight autonomy, and dynamic glare probability are used in this research process to measure whether the daylighting strategy meets the daylighting requirements of the CIBSE Lighting Guide for art studios. The results show that the average indoor lighting coefficient can be increased from 1.29 to 6.18, and the minimum value of the lighting coefficient can be increased from 0.4 to 4.4 by enlarging the windowed wall ratio from 1:30 to 1:3, using the combination method of the horizontal window, skylight and skylight recommended by the analysis results, and selecting veneer glass with 88% transmittance. This allows for better uniform lighting inside the building and reduces glare. This conclusion can support the lighting performance design of industrial buildings in the future.

Design Guideline for Flexible Industrial Buildings Integrating Industry 4.0 Parameters

The emergence of Industry 4.0 can contribute to sustainable development, but most concepts have not yet received much attention in industrial building design. Industry 4.0 aims to realize production in batch size of one and product individualization on demand. Constant reconfiguration and expansion of production systems demand highly flexible building structures to prolong service life and reduce economic and environmental impacts. However, most research and tools focus on either production system or building optimization. There is a lack of holistic approaches that combine these two aspects. This paper presents a systematic design guideline for flexible industrial buildings towards the requirements of Industry 4.0, integrating building and production planning. The methodology employs literature research and a multiple case study based on expert interviews. The design guideline is presented in the form of a categorized parameter catalogue that classifies the results, on the one hand, into the levels of (O) objectives, (T) technical parameters and (P) planning process, and on the other hand, into (S) success factors, (I) suggestions for improvement and (D) deficits. The findings identify flexibility, structural design parameters and an integrated computational design approach at early design stage as potential success factors for integrated industrial building design (IIBD). The results set the basis to develop a multi-objective optimization and decision-making support tool for IIBD in future research.

Design space exploration for flexibility assessment and decision making support in integrated industrial building design

Industrial buildings play a major role in sustainable development, producing and expending a significant amount of resources, energy and waste. Due to product individualization and accelerating technological advances in manufacturing, industrial buildings strive for highly flexible building structures to accommodate constantly evolving production processes. However, common sustainability assessment tools do not respect flexibility metrics and manufacturing and building design processes run sequentially, neglecting discipline-specific interaction, leading to inflexible solutions. In integrated industrial building design (IIBD), incorporating manufacturing and building disciplines simultaneously, design teams are faced with the choice of multiple conflicting criteria and complex design decisions, opening up a huge design space. To address these issues, this paper presents a parametric design process for efficient design space exploration in IIBD. A state-of-the-art survey and multiple case study are conducted to define four novel flexibility metrics and to develop a unified design space, respecting both building and manufacturing requirements. Based on these results, a parametric design process for automated structural optimization and quantitative flexibility assessment is developed, guiding the decision-making process towards increased sustainability. The proposed framework is tested on a pilot-project of a food and hygiene production, evaluating the design space representation and validating the flexibility metrics. Results confirmed the efficiency of the process that an evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm can be implemented in future research to enable multidisciplinary design optimization for flexible industrial building solutions.

Investigation of Shear Wave Velocity by Using Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Wave Method for Microzonation Map Development and Its Application to Industrial Frame Structures

The present study focuses on determining soil dynamic property, specifically the shear wave velocity at the top 30 m, to establish seismic microzonation maps and to evaluate the effect of soil flexibility on the frame structures of industrial building design in terms of drift. The model of industrial building steel frame was built on the basis of a 3D model using the SAP2000 software. The applications of spring stiffness for rigid footing spring constraints include average shear wave velocity to define the shallow foundation of the structure. The flexible- and fixed-base models were developed to evaluate the structural performance.

Dynamic Heat and Moisture Transport Modeling of Industrial Floors on Different Climates

In this paper a conjugated heat and moisture transport investigation of industrial floors is presented. We have analyzed 2D general segments of wall and foundation connections in three different climatic conditions: Budapest (Hungary), Lisbon (Portugal) and Espoo (Finland). We also modeled the component with horizontal or vertical edge insulations with various thicknesses and lengths, and two different soil compositions under the floors. The design of the floor and wall components was performed according to the current standards. We examined 126 combination of the segment and the results shows difference both in relative humidity across the components and heat losses through the internal faces. In conclusion, the simulations and results can improve the energy efficient design of industrial buildings across Europe.

The imposition of socialist realism caused great loss of prestige and intellectual confusion in Hungarian architecture. After 1956, in the first years of the Kádár era it was preoccupied by a sort of “self-rehabilitation” and by the related aim of reviving Hungarian modernism. In this period of search the new architectural phenomena in industrial investments attracting the attention of designers and architecture theoreticians active in other areas of architecture assumed special significance. Under the industrializing programs central to the party propaganda, there was clear-cut political intention for a long time to build materially and technically good-quality, well-designed, monumental industrial building complexes. Architectural creativity received a great boost from the efforts to create structural systems in view of the western engineering innovations and tendencies of form, adapted flexibly to the specificities of the industrializing program launched in the late 1950s, to the new technological systems and the transforming conditions of the building industry and economy. It is not accidental therefore that a certain nimbus evolved soon around the central institution of the field, the Industrial Building Design Company (IPARTERV): the company gradually became a special creative workshop, and industrial architectural planning became a booming branch of the economy. The reception of the IPARTERV activity in the early Kádár era was dominated by the emergence of this nimbus. The aim of the paper is to explore the decisive architectural and engineering approaches, personal and collective planning roles, architectural theoretical tendencies and political factors that shaped the specific role of this company.

Modeling of non-linear CHP efficiency curves in distributed energy systems

Abstract Distributed energy resources gain an increased importance in commercial and industrial building design. Combined heat and power (CHP) units are considered as one of the key technologies for cost and emission reduction in buildings. In order to make optimal decisions on investment and operation for these technologies, detailed system models are needed. These models are often formulated as linear programming problems to keep computational costs and complexity in a reasonable range. However, CHP systems involve variations of the efficiency for large nameplate capacity ranges and in case of part load operation, which can be even of non-linear nature. Since considering these characteristics would turn the models into non-linear problems, in most cases only constant efficiencies are assumed. This paper proposes possible solutions to address this issue. For a mixed integer linear programming problem two approaches are formulated using binary and Special-Ordered-Set (SOS) variables. Both suggestions have been implemented into the optimization model DER–CAM to simulate investment decisions of CHP micro-turbines and CHP fuel cells with variable efficiencies. The approaches have further been applied successfully in a case study with four different commercial buildings. Comparison of the results between the standard version and the new approaches indicate that total annual system costs remain almost unchanged. System performance is subject to change and storage technologies become more important. Part load operation has mainly been found important for fuel cell units. The micro-turbine is found almost exclusively in full load, thus rendering the application of the new approaches for this technology unnecessary for the considered unit sizes and building types. The approach using binary variables was the most promising method to model variable efficiencies in terms of computational costs and results. It should especially be considered for specific fuel cell technologies. Further investigation on the impacts of this approach on the prediction of fuel cell and micro-turbine performance is suggested.

Analysis of Industrial Steel Portal Frames in Fire

This paper presents a robust numerical model for dealing with temporary instabilities which occur in the numerical analysis of steel structures under fire conditions. The model adopts the combined static-dynamic solution procedure to model ‘snap-through’ behaviour of industrial steel portal frame in fire. This new method allows solution procedure automatically switch between static and dynamic approaches, with the objective mainly for overcoming a transitory stage of instability in structural modelling. The current model is computationally very efficient compared to conducting full dynamic analysis of the structures for the whole duration of fire. The method could easily be applied for modelling composite and reinforced concrete buildings under fire conditions. The snap-through instability of the pitched portal frame has been modelled successfully by the new procedure. The method could provide a very useful modelling tool for the perform-based fire safety design of industrial buildings, as a much more realistic alternative to the highly simplified design methods which are currently in use.
