Infrared Thermography of Teat in French Dairy Alpine Goats: A Promising Tool to Study Animal-Machine Interaction during Milking but Not to Detect Mastitis.

There is a need to develop tools for mastitis management in goats and to measure the effects of milking machines on teats. Infrared thermography (IRT), as shown in cows, was a good candidate for early mastitis detection and focusing on milking equipment and settings implicated in potential problems. The aim of this study was to test IRT to detect udder inflammation and the effects of mechanical milking on teats in relation to inflammation status, udder balance, and teat shape in Alpine goats. IRT spectra were compared before and after milking in 551 goats from three commercial herds compared to their individual SCC (somatic cell count). We found no regression or trend between logSCC and IRT measurement or response to milking, even in highly inflamed goat udders. The effect of milking was significant (p < 0.05) with global temperature reduction after milking, but differences were seen between teat parts and unbalanced half udders. The highest reduction in skin temperature was observed at the teat orifice (-1.06 ± 0.05) and the lowest at the teat barrel (-0.37 ± 0.05). The teats with long barrels showed more IRT reactions, which clearly indicates poor adaptation to the liners used. In conclusion, the IRT was not able to detect mastitis, but it is a good tool to diagnose the effects of the milking machine in order to adapt milking equipment and settings to the goats and improve their welfare.

Effect of bovine subclinical mastitis on milk production and economic performance of Brazilian dairy farms

This review summarized the significant results from Brazilian studies published in peer-reviewed scientific papers about the effect of bovine subclinical mastitis (SM) on economic performance and milk production. Different approaches were considered for (i) disease detection (indirect measurement of somatic cell count (SCC) and directly using microbiological culture) and (ii) milk sampling strategy (mammary quarters, composite cow samples, and bulk milk tank). Globally, bovine mastitis is the most common disease of dairy herds, and the subclinical presentation is the most frequent. Dairy farmers usually underestimate the economic losses associated with SM because no visual changes in milk and quarters, udder, and systemic symptoms are observed. SM reduces milk yield and quality, reducing dairy herds’ profitability. The estimation of losses depends on the causative pathogen, the lactation stage, and the parity of affected cows. Thus, estimating the economic caused by SM in milk production and economic performance in dairy herds can be used to decide which mastitis control strategies to adopt. Mastitis control involves adopting specific measures associated with the characteristics of each herd, the period of the highest frequency of cases, the transmission form, and the profile of the pathogens involved in cases of intramammary infection. Thus, using individual SCC, the microbiological identification of pathogens causing SM, adopting efficient drying-off protocols, and other management practices are essential for mastitis control, improved milk quality, and greater profitability of dairy herds.

Health concerns about possible long-term effects of legally marketed milk and dairy from animals with intramammary infections.

Milk and dairy from animals with subclinical mastitis infections are marketable. Mastitis is detected with the somatic cell count (SCC). The EU regulation, among the stricter ones, limits an average of 400,000 somatic cells/ml in milk. Other countries have higher or no thresholds. This level suggests 40% of infected animals, and we indeed consume mastitic milk and dairy. A worldwide prevalence of dairy cattle and buffaloes with subclinical mastitis is estimated to range between 34 and 46%. The current food safety regulations account for mastitis pathogens, their toxins, and the risk of antimicrobial residues, but milk from animals with mastitis contains also compounds that derive from an immune response and inflammation process with biological function for the offspring. To the best of the current knowledge, it cannot be excluded that these compounds do not interfere with human homeostasis and that they do not contribute to redox or cytokine dysregulation that, in turn, could promote certain chronic diseases. These compounds include radicals, oxidation products, nitrosamines, and proinflammatory cytokines with nitrosamines being already recognized as probable carcinogens. Mastitis also alters the composition of caseins, plasmin, and plasminogen activators, which may be related to increased transformation into amyloid with similar characteristics as the fibrils associated with Alzheimer's disease. We should determine whether these bioactive compounds could, alone or in combination, represent any long-term risk to the consumer's health. Adapted regulations and concomitant subsidies for farmers are suggested, for sensing tools that reveal individual SCC and mastitis at milking. Frequent SCC determination is the prerequisite for any mastitis control program.

Evaluation of Cow-Side Meters to Determine Somatic Cell Count in Individual Cow Quarter and Bulk-Tank Milk Samples.

Intramammary infections, which cause mastitis, can increase treatment and labor costs, decrease milk production, and affect milk quality. Meters that measure quarter somatic cell count (SCC) could be used to make more informed dry cow therapy decisions. The objective of this study was to compare the RT-10 iPhone adapter (RT-10; Dairy Quality Inc., Newmarket, ON, Canada), DeLaval Cell Counter (DSCC; DeLaval, Gurnee, IL, USA), Porta Check Quick Test (PortaCheck, White City, OR, USA), California Mastitis Test (ImmuCell, Portland, ME USA), pH meter (Hanna Instruments, Smithfield, RI, USA), electrical conductivity meter (OHAUS, Parsippany, NJ, USA), and the dual laser infrared temperature thermometer (Klein Tools, Lincolnshire, IL, USA) for measuring SCC in individual Holstein mammary quarters in comparison to a reference standard, the Fourier Transform Spectrometer 600 Combi System (Combi; Bentley Instruments, Chaska, MN, USA). Meters were evaluated using 658 individual cow quarter samples and 100 bulk-tank samples to measure SCC. Individual quarter milk samples from 160 cows from four commercial dairy herds were collected just before dry off and tested within 4 h of collection. To test bulk-tank SCC, 100 bulk-tank milk samples (25 mL) were collected from UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Milk Quality Lab. Meter SCC values were regressed on observed Combi SCC. Goodness of fit was then evaluated by partitioning the mean square predicted error (MSPE). For individual quarter SCC, RT-10 had the highest coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.86), lowest MSPE, and highest proportion of MSPE due to random variation (96%). Both the RT-10 and DSCC had the highest sensitivity and specificity for identifying quarter SCC above and below 200,000 cells/mL. For bulk-tank SCC, DSCC had the highest coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.45), lowest MSPE, and highest proportion of MSPE due to random variation (80%). The RT-10 and DSCC could be used to measure individual quarter SCC to determine which cows to treat at dry off potentially reducing antibiotic use.

Udder Hygiene and Mastitis Indicators in Contrasting Environmental Conditions during Half-Time Confinement in Pasture-Based Dairy Systems.

This study aimed to compare the association between two types of housing, compost barns (CB) vs. outdoor soil-bedded yard (OD), and udder hygiene and mastitis indicators in Holstein dairy cows calving in autumn (n = 31) and spring (n = 27). After calving, cows were transferred to a pasture-based system with half-time confinement in one of two treatments: CB or OD. The udder hygiene score (UHS) was evaluated monthly and on days after rainfall over the entire lactation period. Individual somatic cell count (SCC) was determined throughout lactation, and the prevalence of intramammary infection (IMI) was estimated. Cows confined in OD presented higher UHS compared to cows in CB (p < 0.05) in both calving seasons. After rains, autumn-calving cows in OD were dirtier than on days without previous rain (OR = 1.85, CI 95%: 1.1-3.1; p < 0.02). However, no differences in IMI and clinical mastitis were found between OD and CB cows in either calving season.

Association Between Recycled Manure Solids Bedding and Subclinical Mastitis Incidence: A Canadian Cohort Study.

Recycled manure solids (RMS) are increasingly used as bedding for dairy cows. However, potential impact of RMS bedding on animal health is not well described. The objective of this study was to evaluate subclinical mastitis incidence in cows housed on RMS bedding. Twenty RMS farms and a comparative group of 60 straw-bedded farms were enrolled in a 1-year longitudinal study (2018–2019). Data from 11,031 dairy cows were collected. Variations of individual somatic cell count were evaluated using three different methods. First, we compared the cow's mean lactation linear score between cows housed on the two bedding types. Then, we compared across bedding types the risk for a given cow of having a milk test with a linear score ≥ 4. Finally, we evaluated the dynamics of somatic cell count using pairs of tests within a cow. More specifically, we considered that only pairs of DHI tests where the first test yielded a linear score < 4 were at risk of an incident subclinical mastitis event. Then, we defined a newly acquired subclinical mastitis when the second test was ≥ 4. All models were adjusted for putative confounders. We could not highlight a significant association between bedding type and cow's mean lactational linear score (least square mean of 2.47 in cows from RMS farms vs. 2.37 in straw farms; 95%CI for linear score's difference: −0.20, 0.40). Furthermore, we could not find an association between bedding type and the risk of a high linear score (≥ 4). For the latter, cows housed on RMS had 0.93 times the risk of having a high linear score than straw-bedded cows (%95 CI: 0.68, 1.28). Moreover, cows on recycled manure solids farms had 0.73 time the risk of acquiring subclinical mastitis when compared to straw-bedded farms. Again, this risk was not statistically significant (%95 CI: 0.54, 1.00). In our study, RMS bedding was not associated with subclinical mastitis, as measured by somatic cell count, when compared to cows housed on a more conventional bedding, straw bedding.

Effect of selective dry cow treatment on udder health and antimicrobial usage on Dutch dairy farms

Since 2013, selective dry cow treatment (SDCT) has been the standard approach in the Netherlands where farmers select cows for the use of antimicrobials at drying-off. Shortly after its introduction, antimicrobial usage decreased significantly, and no significant association was found between the level of SDCT and clinical mastitis (CM). Obviously, at that time long-term associations could not be evaluated. This study aimed to provide insight into the methods and level of implementation of SDCT on Dutch dairy farms with a conventional milking system (CMS) or an automatic milking system (AMS) in 2016 and 2017, several years after the implementation of SDCT. Udder health and antimicrobial use were also assessed. For this study, 262 farmers recorded dry cow treatments as well as all CM cases in the period from May 1, 2016, until April 30, 2017. Additionally, somatic cell count (SCC) data on cow and herd level, treatment data on herd level and questionnaire results on udder health management were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with differences between milking systems being evaluated using nonparametric univariable statistics. In the study period, SDCT was applied on almost all (98.8%) of the participating dairy farms. The main reason for applying antimicrobials at drying-off was either the SCC history during the complete previous lactation or the SCC at the last milk recording before drying-off. The median percentage of cows treated with antimicrobials was 48.5%. The average incidence rate of CM was 27.3 cases per 100 cows per year. From all CM cases that were registered per herd, on average 32.8% were scored as mild, 42.2% as moderate, and 25.0% as severe CM. The mean bulk tank SCC of the herds was 168,989 cells/mL. A cow was considered to have subclinical mastitis (SCM) if individual SCC was ≥150,000 cells/mL for primiparous and ≥250,000 cells/mL for multiparous cows. Passing these threshold values after 2 earlier low SCC values was considered a new case of SCM. The mean incidence rate of SCM in these herds was 62.5 cases per 100 cows per year. Bulk tank SCC and the incidence rate of SCM on farms with a CMS were statistically lower than on farms with an AMS, whereas the incidence rate of CM did not significantly differ between both groups of farms. The AMS farms had more cows per herd treated with antimicrobials at drying-off and a larger proportion of severe CM cases than did CMS farms. It is unknown whether the differences are due to the milking system or to other differences between both types of farms. This study showed the level of adoption of SDCT, udder health, and antimicrobial usage parameters several years after the ban on the preventive use of antimicrobials in animal husbandry. It found that udder health parameters did not differ from those found in Dutch studies before and around the time of implementing SDCT, whereas SDCT was widely applied on Dutch dairy farms during the study period. Therefore, it was concluded that Dutch dairy farmers were able to handle the changed policy of antimicrobial use at drying-off while maintaining indicators of a good udder health.

Prevalence of bovine mastitis and main risk factors in Tunisia.

Tunisian milk chain is in danger with a dramatical reduction of milk production over the last years. Improving the quality of milk seems mandatory to improve farmers' income, but for the moment, there is only scarce data on milk quality management in Tunisia. In this context, the aims of our study were first to describe the prevalence of bovine mastitis in 267 cows from 71 representative small dairy farms in the North (43.7%) and Center (56.3%) regions of Tunisia, using mastitis detection by California Mastitis Test (CMT) on milk quarter and clinical signs, and second, to assess possible risk factors for mastitis from animal, environment, and breeding management. In parallel, cow and bulk milk somatic cell count (SCC) were analyzed. Our results demonstrated that 60.3% of cows showed mastitis as determined by CMT and clinical examinations. Increased stage of lactation, parity, udder depth, and type of milking were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with increased odds of mastitis prevalence. The mean of individual cow SCC (ISCC) and bulk milk SCC (BMSCC) was very high (1083 × 103 cells/mL and 698 × 103 cells/mL, respectively), all ranks and stages of lactations combined. These high values confirm the infectious origin of mastitis that we found caused mainly by Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococci. In conclusion, control of the identified risks factors and improved biosecurity measures must be encouraged to restore udder health and milk quality and thus productivity and durability of Tunisian milk chain.

Distribution of somatic cell count and udder pathogens in Norwegian dairy goats

Compared with dairy cows, goat somatic cell count (SCC) is higher and probably more affected by physiological factors such as parity, stage of lactation, and season. Thus, SCC is believed to be a less precise indicator of intramammary infections in dairy goats, and no consensus exists on SCC thresholds for considering goats as infected. The Norwegian Goat Recording System maintains individual goat production records and results from microbiological analyses of milk samples. In this retrospective observational study, we used recordings over a 10-yr period (2010 to 2020) to describe the association between individual goat SCC and noninfectious factors, as well as intramammary infections. The median SCC in the 1,000,802 milk recordings included in the study was 440,000 cells/mL, and the mode was 70,000 cells/mL. Somatic cell count increased with parity, days in milk, estrus, pasture season, and intramammary infections. The effect of parity and stage of lactation was significantly higher in infected compared with uninfected goats. Staphylococci dominated as causes of intramammary infections, with Staphylococcus aureus as the udder pathogen associated with highest SCC. The most prevalent non-aureus staphylococci were Staphylococcus warneri, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus caprae. This study provides guidelines for interpretation of goat SCC at different parities and stages of lactations under Norwegian management conditions. We revealed a considerable variation in SCC associated with physiological factors, indicating that the cutoff for identifying infected goats should be a dynamic threshold adjusted for parity, stage of lactation, and season.

Effect of feed additive supplementation on bovine subclinical mastitis

Bovine mastitis is an important commercial and sanitary cost in milk production. The prevention and treatment of this disease is essentially based on the use of antibiotics that have limited effectiveness and can negatively affect milk quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternative treatment based on a symbiotic in the control and prevention of subclinical mastitis (SCM), and in the improvement of the quality of milk produced on a dairy farm in north-central Algeria. The milk of 68 cows was collected and analysed by somatic cell count and bacteriological analysis. Three samples were taken at one-month intervals. The first sample was taken before the administration of a feed additive (SYMBIOVEBA®) to lactating dairy cows. Animals were divided into two groups to study the effects (curative and preventive) of the symbiotic. Each group was further divided into two subgroups, where one received the symbiotic and the other was the control. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis at this farm was 33.82%. Bacterial identification was performed using classical methods only on the group of cows with mastitis; a total of 13 bacterial species were isolated from the three samples. Staphylococci were dominant, with a frequency of 45%, followed by Enterobacteriaceae (40%). These rates were considerably lower in both subgroups, though treated cows showed 100% cure rate for both Staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae. Individual somatic cell count (ISCC) was performed on all three samples and in both groups, and revealed a cure threshold (S) of 200,000 cells/mL, and a 100% cure rate for the SYMBIOVEBA®-treated cow subgroup compared to 62.5% for the control subgroup (P&amp;lt;0.05).

Estimating milk loss based on somatic cell count at the cow and herd level

There is a direct relationship between elevated somatic cell count (SCC) in an individual cow milk production and milk loss. This relationship has been used at the herd level to estimate an overall herd milk loss due to subclinical mastitis and to use recovery of this lost milk as a financial benefit to cover the cost of intervention strategies to improve milk quality. The objective of this study was to estimate the recoverable milk revenue on a per cow basis for herds moving from one herd average SCC level to a newer, lower level. Test-day records from 1,005,697 dairy cows in 3,741 herds between 2009 to 2019 were used. Milk yield loss for each cow in each herd on test day was estimated using a mixed effects regression equation, and then summed to estimated total herd milk loss. These herd average daily milk loss estimates were then related to the bulk tank SCC, and the distribution of underlying individual cow SCC were examined. The distributions in daily herd milk loss for various bulk tank SCC values were generated, and estimates of recoverable milk loss were generated to simulate a herd moving from their current bulk tank SCC to a new lower level. The results indicate that estimates of total herd milk yield loss vary with the distribution of cow-level SCC and parity within the herd, so it is imperative that milk loss be calculated on a per cow basis. Further, the recoverable milk loss estimates based on moving to a lower bulk tank SCC where milk loss is still occurring was relatively small compared with the traditional assumption that all milk loss would be recovered, and less than most herd owners and advisors would expect.

Observational study on application of a selective dry-cow therapy protocol based on individual somatic cell count thresholds

Selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) is one measure suggested to reduce the use of antibiotics on dairy farms. This procedure may have a negative impact on dairy herds, affecting both milk yield and quality. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the implementation of a SDCT protocol based on the treatment only of cows with SCC at last individual milk test before drying-off >100,000 cells/mL (primiparous cows) or >200,000 cells/mL (pluriparous cows) on udder infection status. We also assessed the association between cow and management factors with the likelihood of cure or of new IMI across the dry period. The study considered 516 dairy cows (2064 quarters), and only 53% of the cows were treated with antibiotics. Before drying-off, 999 quarters (49.1%) were bacteriological negative at two consecutive samples. After calving the negative quarters were 1004 (49.3%). The likelihood of a cure across the dry period was significantly associated with parity, drying-off length and teat sealant application, while the likelihood of new IMI across the dry period was associated to all the risk factors considered (parity, dry period length, teat sealant application, infections status at drying-off and type of long-acting antibiotic applied). The application under field conditions of the proposed SDCT protocol showed to feasible, and to largely reduce the use of antimicrobials at drying-off, with a relatively small impact on cow health. Highlights First observational study in of Italian dairy herds on the application of a selective dry-cow therapy protocol based on SCC. The study showed as a reduction of about 50% in antimicrobial usage at drying off can be achieved. Management and cow factors affect the likelihood of a cure of a new intramammary infection across the dry period.

Incidence of milk leakage after dry-off in European dairy herds, related risk factors, and its role in new intramammary infections

The incidence of milk leakage (ML) after dry-off (DO) and related risk factors was studied in 1,175 dairy cows from 41 commercial herds in 8 European countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Milk leakage was assessed twice for 30 s each during 3 visits at 20 to 24 h, 30 to 34 h, and 48 to 52 h after DO. Information related to dry-cow management and udder health was collected at herd and cow level, including individual somatic cell count (ISCC) from test-day controls and occurrence of clinical mastitis cases from DO until 30 d in lactation. Mixed-effect logistic regression analyses were used to identify possible risk factors for ML and to study the association between ML and new intramammary infections. Intramammary infections were defined as clinical mastitis cases during the dry period and in the first 30 d in lactation or a rise in ISCC from before to after the dry period (threshold: 200,000 cells/mL) or both. Milk leakage was observed in 24.5% of the cows between 20 and 52 h after DO, where the herd incidence varied between 0.0 and 77.8%. The reduction in number of milkings in the weeks before DO had statistically significant effect on the ML incidence. When the milking frequency was reduced from 3 times/d to 2 or maintained at twice a day, cows had 11 (95% CI = 3.43-35.46) or 9 (95% CI = 1.85-48.22) times higher odds of leaking milk, respectively, compared with cows where the milking frequency was reduced from twice to once a day. Also, the milk production 24 h before DO was associated with ML incidence. Hence, cows with a milk production between 13 and 21 L or above 21 L had 2.3 (95% CI = 1.48-3.53) and 3.1 (95% CI = 1.79-5.3) times higher odds of leaking milk, respectively, compared with cows with a milk production below 13 L. A higher ML incidence was present in the group of cows with an average ISCC in the last 3 mo before DO ≥200,000 cells/mL (odds ratio = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.13-2.41) compared with cows with an average ISCC <100,000 cells/mL. Quarters with ML tended to have 2.0 times higher odds of developing clinical mastitis compared with quarters not leaking milk. Cows with ML tended to have 1.5 times higher odds of intramammary infections (i.e., an increase of ISCC or clinical mastitis) compared with cows without ML.

Milk yield and somatic cells in dairy ewes with respect to their mutual relations

The objective of this study was to analyze milk yield and somatic cell count (SCC) expressed as somatic cell sore (SCS) in Lacaune dairy breed. Data from milk performance testing recorded between 2016 and 2018 (farm in West Slovakia) were used. A total, 377 individual milk yield and SCC records of 61 ewes (first, second and third lacation, respectively) were analysed. Mixed model for milk yield included fixed factors: SCC class (lowest, low, middle, high and highest), year of measurement, lactation number, month in milk and interaction between month in milk and SCC class, and random factors of ewe and error. Mixed model for SCS included milk yield class (lowest, low, middle, high, highest), year of measurement, lactation number, month in milk and interaction between month in milk and milk yield class. Random factors of ewe and error were considered as well. Milk yield was significantly affected ( p &lt;0.05 or p &lt;0.01) by all investigated factors. Except for interaction between month in milk and milk yield class, the remaining factors significantly affected (p &lt;0.05 or p &lt;0.01) also SCS. The analyses confirmed that SCC may be used as a useful indicator of udder health. It may help in identifying infected ewes, and thus, avoiding mammary infections to be spread throughout the whole flock.

Selective and deferred treatment of clinical mastitis in seven New Zealand dairy herds

Mastitis is the most frequent reason for antibiotic use in New Zealand dairy cattle and technologies reducing and targeting this use contribute to responsible product stewardship. Rapid identification of pathogen and antibiotic susceptibility facilitate targeted treatment but currently involve a minimum 24 h delay. Studies from confinement systems where Gram-negative organisms are responsible for a significant proportion of mastitis, indicate selective treatment can reduce antibiotic use without reducing clinical or bacteriological cure. However, in New Zealand’s seasonal, pastoral dairy system, mastitis is dominated by Gram-positive organisms and if treatment is deferred, it is vital both short- and long-term clinical health outcomes are not compromised.Mastatest® is a diagnostic system for bovine mastitis indicating the pathogen and its antibiotic sensitivity within 24 h of sampling. This study focused on evaluating this system’s ability to control antibiotic usage whilst achieving equivalent bacteriological and clinical cure rates alongside long term individual somatic cell count (ISCC) outcomes as conventional treatment choices.Mild to moderate mastitis cases in the 100 days after calving in 6467 cows from 7 farms were milk sampled and randomly allocated to a positive control group non-selective treatment or a culture-based treatment. All milk samples were processed using Mastatest®. For the positive control, the quarter was treated immediately with 3 treatments of procaine penicillin every 12 h. For the selective treatment group, treatment was delayed for 24 h and then informed by pathogen and antibiotic sensitivity from the Mastatest® result. Gram-negative and no-growth quarters were untreated. Gram-positive quarters were treated with the antibiotic for which the lowest in vitro antimicrobial sensitivity was reported.Re-sampling was carried out from affected quarter(s) approximately 21 days after initial diagnosis and cultured for bacterial identification. Clinical recurrence within 60 days and ISCC data was recorded at herd tests over the duration of the lactation. Antimicrobial usage and days of milk withhold pending clearance of antibiotic residues were also noted.There was no difference in bacteriological or clinical cure rate between the two treatment groups. Final herd test ISCC and days of milk withhold from supply did not differ between groups. Antibiotic usage was 24 % less (95 % predictive interval = 12–47 %) in the selective group.This study suggests that on farm decisions about deferred treatment of mastitis using Mastatest® to identify the intramammary pathogen can reduce the antimicrobial usage with no loss in bacterial or clinical cure and with no effect on ISCC over the lactation.

Mastitis, somatic cell count and milk quality: an overview

Mastitis is the economically most important disease in lactating cows and the prevalence under any management condition is considerably high. It causes economic losses due to reduction of both quantity and quality of milk. The groups of microorganisms causing mastitis are categorized as bacteria, fungi, mycoplasma and nocardia. Among the several cow side tests to trace intra-mammary infections (IMI) at early stage, i.e. sub-clinical mastitis (SCM), California Mastitis Test (CMT) is commonly used in which somatic cell count (SCC) is indirectly taken into account. The SCC of milk is an indicator of mammary infections because SCC positively correlates with the severity of infection. The SCC of >200,000 cells/ml is considered to be an indication of IMI. However, SCC in the milk can also vary with some other factors such as breed, age of the cow, stage of lactation, body condition score, etc. A few studies have shown that high SCC in milk affect the composition, organoleptic properties and keeping quality of raw milk and heat treated milk, yoghurts and cheese. One could argue that low SCC milk (sub-clinical mastitis) will not have a significant effect on product quality. But it should be emphasized that the natural infection occurs with various types of microorganisms that can precipitate product defects despite the low SCC. Also, attention must be paid to the bulk tank somatic cell count (BTSCC) rather than individual animal SCC. The quality of raw milk collected from different parts of the country is reported to be low with high bacteria counts mainly due to unhygienic milking and field practices. Milk quality directly influences the income of the small scale milk producers which inturn affects the sustainable dairy production. In Sri Lanka the majority of dairy farmers are small scale producers and they practice minimum milk hygiene practices compared to medium and large scale producers. Therefore, it is essential to make them aware of hygienic milking practices and implement milk quality based payments (MQBP) with added premium and penalties for the existing milk price, with the objective of encouraging clean milk production.

Risk factors for high bulk milk somatic cell counts in dairy herds from Campos das Vertentes region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil: a case-control study

ABSTRACT: High bulk milk somatic cell counts (BMSCC) are indicative of failures related to the control of mastitis in the herd, which compromises the quality of the milk and generates great losses for the producers and for the industry. A case-control study was carried out in dairy herds in the Campos das Vertentes region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in order to contribute to the knowledge of the risk factors involved with elevated BMSCC. The study involved 46 dairy herds, of which 30 were considered cases (BMSCC ≥700,000 cells/mL of milk) and 16 control farms (BMSCC ≤200,000 cells/mL of milk). Sixteen qualitative variables and four quantitative variables were analyzed. The results showed that the risk factors for BMSCC ≥700,000 cells/mL were the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae pathogens in bulk milk, non-use of pre and post-dipping, non-use of disposable paper towel for drying of mammary glands, non-monitoring of mastitis in the herd by means of California Mastitis Test (CMT) or individual somatic cell counts (SCC), non-implementation of the milking line and therapy of dry cows and failures in hygiene of teats and udders before milking. Moderate correlations were also observed between the elevation of BMSCC and counts of S. aureus and BMSCC and counts S. agalactiae in bulk milk, and a moderate correlation between S. aureus and S. agalactiae counts in bulk milk. Failures with regard to the maintenance and use of milking equipment, including manual pressure application in milking assemblies, unregulated milking vacuum pressure, and vacuum loss during milking, and maintenance failures of the milking machine and bulk milk tank were also pointed out as important risk factors of BMSCC elevation. The results of this study provided subsidies for the elaboration of more effective programs for mastitis control and improvement of raw milk quality, reducing the losses caused by the disease to producers and industry.

The informative value of an overview on antibiotic consumption, treatment efficacy and cost of clinical mastitis at farm level

This paper addresses whether it is worthwhile investing time in a more comprehensive documentation and analysis of farm specific data for mastitis treatment. Whilst most farmers keep some records, many refrain from investing more effort in making them more detailed. Therefore, information on farm-specific antibiotic consumption, effectiveness of treatments and the costs of mastitis are lacking; as well as the ability to identify and realise possibilities for improvement. An observational study was conducted on 30 dairy farms, to obtain an overview of farming practice, recording detailed data (using herd management software) on: milk records, diagnostics, preventive and therapeutic treatments and cost of mastitis, on an individual cow level. Out of a total of 30,633 cows, 67% received medication for the treatment or prevention of mastitis over a year. Antibiotics were chosen for 96% of udder treatments; including those for dry cows. Over 32% of the antibiotics used during lactation belonged to the ‘highest priority critically important antimicrobial’ category. Success of therapeutic treatment (assessed by individual somatic cell count (SCC)) ranged from 18% to 59% and total costs of mastitis per cow and year from € 158 to € 483. The high variations in antibiotic consumption, treatment outcomes and cost of mastitis between farms, showed that average or incomplete figures risk giving the wrong impression of a farm.It is thus worthwhile to invest in documentation and analysis of data, so that it is clear where action is required and which investments can be expected to be financially feasible. Benefits emerge from knowledge of antibiotic consumption allowing monitoring and reduction in antibiotic use (as demanded by consumers and legislation), improvements in animal health and welfare thanks to regular checks of how effective a treatment is, and economic benefits due to knowledge of the costs caused by mastitis.

Effects of reduced intramammary antimicrobial use during the dry period on udder health in Dutch dairy herds

Dry cow therapy (DCT) in the Netherlands changed from mainly blanket to selective antimicrobial DCT. This transition was supported by a national guideline, with the individual somatic cell count (SCC) at the last milk recording before dry-off as the main selection criterion for antimicrobial DCT. The aim of this retrospective observational study is to evaluate the SCC dynamics during the dry period at the herd and individual dry period level following the national transition from mainly blanket to selective antimicrobial DCT. At the herd level, we used 2 data sets to evaluate the SCC dynamics during the dry period: (1) a national data set containing 3,493 herds with data available from 2011 through 2015 and (2) a veterinary practice data set containing 280 herds with data available from 2013 through 2015. The herd level analysis was carried out using key performance indicators provided via milk recording (CRV, Arnhem, the Netherlands): the percentage of cows that developed a new intramammary infection (IMI) during the dry period and the percentage of cows cured of an IMI during the dry period. The effect of DCT at individual dry period level was analyzed with a mixed-effects logistic regression model based on 4,404 dry periods from 2,638 cows in 20 herds within the veterinary practice data set. For these 20 herds, individual SCC data from milk recordings and individual cow DCT were available from 2013 through 2015. No significant changes were observed to the SCC dynamics during the dry period at the herd level. The percentage of cows that developed a new IMI during the dry period ranged between 16 and 18%, and the percentage of cows cured from an IMI during the dry period ranged between 74 and 76%. At the individual dry period level, a low SCC at the first milk recording following a dry period was associated with the use of intramammary antimicrobial DCT with or without the concurrent use of an intramammary teat sealer [odds ratio (OR) = 2.16 and OR = 2.07, respectively], the use of DCT with an intramammary teat sealer only (OR = 1.35), and a low SCC at the last milk recording before dry-off (OR = 1.78). This study demonstrates that the selection of cows for DCT without antimicrobials based on SCC thresholds at the last milk recording is possible without significant changes to udder health and reduced the use of antimicrobials.

Effect of treatment with an internal teat sealant at drying-off in cows wintered on forage crops in New Zealand on clinical mastitis and somatic cell counts

AIMS: To determine the impact of treatment with internal teat sealant (ITS) compared to no treatment at drying-off on the incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) during the dry period and 84 days after calving, and the prevalence of cows with somatic cell counts (SCC) ≥200,000 cells/mL at the first lactation herd test, for cows wintered on forage crops.METHODS: In four dairy herds in the South Island of New Zealand, cows with no history of CM or individual SCC >100,000 cells/mL during the 2015–16 season were randomly assigned to treatment with ITS in each quarter (ITS group) at drying-off or no treatment (Control group). Cows were otherwise treated similarly, wintered on forage crops and transferred to pasture for calving and lactation. Cows were monitored over the dry period and for 84 days after calving, and any case of CM recorded. Individual SCC were recorded at the first herd test after calving.RESULTS: Between drying-off and 84 days after calving 36/470 (7.7%) cows in the ITS groups and 73/442 (16.5%) cows in the Control group were diagnosed with CM (RR=0.46; 95% CI=0.26–0.73). The final multivariable logistic regression model included an interaction between treatment group and length of dry period. For a Friesian/Jersey cow, aged 4–8 years, with a dry period of 30–80 days, dried off without ITS, the probability of CM in the study period was 0.12 (95% CI=0.09–0.16), and for such a cow treated with ITS the probability was 0.07 (95% CI=0.05–0.10). For an equivalent cow, with a dry period of 81–140 days, which was untreated, the probability was 0.21 (95% CI=0.14–0.29), and for such a cow treated with ITS it was 0.05 (95% CI=0.02–0.11). At the first herd test after calving 77/383 (20.1%) cows in the Control group and 57/425 (13.4%) cows in the ITS group had SCC ≥200,000 cells/mL (RR=1.51; 95% CI=1.10–2.06).CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For these farms, treatment of cows with no history of elevated SCC or CM with ITS at drying-off halved the incidence of CM between drying-off and 84 days after calving, and reduced by 33% the proportion of cows with SCC≥200,000 at the first herd test after calving, compared with untreated cows. Treatment with ITS reduced the risk of CM proportionally more for cows with a dry period of 81–140 days than for cows with a shorter dry period.
