Properties of 3-fluoroprop-2-enoic acids, chemical shifts and indirect spin-spin coupling constants: A DFT study

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters, shielding constants, and indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCC) in a large set of model compounds were calculated using the combination of the B3PW91, B3LYP, and BHandH functionals with the 6-311+(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2d,p), and 6-311++G(3df, 3pd) basis sets, in order to verify the most appropriate methods for calculating these parameters. Selected methods were applied to calculate the NMR parameters in (2E)- and (2Z)-3-fluoroprop-2-enoic acids. Optimization of structures revealed four stable rotamers of each isomer, E and Z, of 3-fluoroprop-2-enoic acid. The internal molecular energy of s-cis and s-trans syn rotamers indicated that they are favorable in solution. All rotamers of 3-fluoroprop-2-enoic acid are coplanar except E s-trans anti, which has a "twisted" structure due to repulsion between hydrogen atoms CFH and HO. Topological analysis of the electronic structure of molecules including properties of critical points revealed noncovalent F...OH and F...HO bonds in Z s-trans syn and anti rotamers, respectively. The molecules of acid tend to form dimers and trimers in solution via hydrogen bonds O...H, CH...O, and CH...F, with binding energies ranging from a few to over a dozen kcal per mol. Theoretical chemical shifts and SSCCs were analyzed in detail to find a dependence on the geometry of individual rotameters. Calculations revealed a 5J(F,H) of -31 Hz in Z s-trans-anti rotamer containing the F...HO hydrogen bond, while this SSCC ranges from -1.9 to 1.4 Hz in the remaining rotamers. Intermolecular SSCCs across hydrogen bonds range from -3 to 7 Hz in dimers and trimers. Theoretical NMR parameters were compared with available experimental data.

NMR Coupling Constants Based on the Bethe–Salpeter Equation in the GW Approximation

We present the first steps to extend the Green's function GW method and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) to molecular response properties such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) indirect spin-spin coupling constants. We discuss both a nonrelativistic one-component and a quasi-relativistic two-component formalism. The latter describes scalar-relativistic and spin-orbit effects and allows us to study heavy-element systems with reasonable accuracy. Efficiency is maintained by the application of the resolution of the identity approximation throughout. The performance is demonstrated using conventional central processing units (CPUs) and modern graphics processing units (GPUs) for molecules involving several thousand basis functions. Our results show that a large amount of Hartree-Fock exchange is vital to provide a sufficient Kohn-Sham starting point to compute the GW quasi-particle energies. As the GW-BSE approach is generally less accurate for triplet excitations or related properties such as the Fermi-contact interaction, the admixture of the Kohn-Sham correlation kernel through the contracted BSE (cBSE) method improves the results for NMR coupling constants. This leads to remarkable results when combined with the eigenvalue-only self-consistent variant (evGW) and Becke's half and half functional (BH&HLYP) or the CAM-QTP family. The developed methodology is used to calculate the Karplus curve of tin molecules, illustrating its applicability to extended chemically relevant molecules. Here, the GW-cBSE method improves upon the chosen BH&HLYP Kohn-Sham starting points.

Multi-configurational short-range density functional theory can describe spin-spin coupling constants of transition metal complexes.

The multi-configurational short-range (sr) density functional theory has been extended to the calculation of indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The performance of the new method is compared to Kohn-Sham density functional theory and the ab initio complete active space self-consistent field for a selected set of molecules with good reference values. Two density functionals have been considered, the local density approximation srLDA and srPBE from the GGA class of functionals. All srDFT calculations are of Hartree-Fock-type HF-srDFT or complete active space-type CAS-srDFT. In all cases, the calculated SSCC values are of the same quality for srLDA and srPBE functionals, suggesting that one should use the computationally cost-effective srLDA functionals in applications. For all the calculated SSCCs in organic compounds, the best choice is HF-srDFT; the more expensive CAS-srDFT does not provide better values for these single-reference molecules. Fluorine is a challenge; in particular, the FF, FC, and FO couplings have much higher statistical errors than the rest. For SSCCs involving fluorine and a metal atom CAS-srDFT with singlet, generalized Tamm-Dancoff approximation is needed to get good SSCC values although the reference ground state is not a multi-reference case. For VF6 -1, all other considered models fail blatantly.

Prediction of spin-spin coupling constants with machine learning in NMR.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most important methods for analyzing the molecular structures of compounds. The objective in this study is to predict indirect spin-spin coupling constants in NMR based on machine learning. We propose important descriptors for predicting indirect spin-spin coupling constants from target pairs of atoms in molecules, and combine the proposed descriptors with molecular descriptors to predict indirect spin-spin coupling constants with LightGBM as a regression analysis method. We construct regression models using a dataset and verify their predictive accuracy, and then confirm that the proposed descriptors can predict indirect spin-spin coupling constants more accurately than the traditional descriptors used to predict chemical shifts.

Synthesis, crystal structure, high-resolution l13Cd and 13C MAS NMR investigation and dielectric study of [C2H10N2]Cd (SCN)4

A new crystalline polymer compound [C2H10N2]Cd (SCN)4 was synthesized and analyzed using XRD single crystal, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), complex impedance and solid state 13C and 113Cd CP/MAS NMR. The crystal structure shows that the cadmium atoms have a S4N2-hexa-coordination sphere, exhibiting pseudo-octahedral geometry. The Cd(II) atoms are bridged by two SCN− anions generating 1D polymeric chains. Crystal packing with significantly different interactions was determined by Hirshfeld surface analysis and discussed herein. The crystal packing was assured by mean of hydrogen bonds, Van der Waals and π-π interactions. Solid state 113Cd CP/MAS NMR shows that each distinct cadmium site in the cadmium thiocyanates exhibits multiplets that result from 113Cd,14N spin-spin coupling. Examination of the 13C CP/MAS NMR line shapes allows direct measurement of the indirect spin-spin coupling constants 1J(14N, 13C) = 28 Hz and 2J(111/113Cd,13C) = (75+8)Hz, for the unique N-bonded thiocyanate ligand. DSC analysis shows a phase transition at about 359 K. The temperature dependence of bulk conductivity σ(Rp) and relaxation frequency (fr) were described and discussed by the use of the Arrhenius relationship. The frequency dependence of the real part of the AC conductivity in both phases follows the Jonscher's universal dynamic law. The evolution of S(T) as function of temperatures suggests that the quantum mechanical tunneling QMT mechanism prevails in phases I and II.

Quantum chemical calculations of 77 Se and 125 Te nuclear magnetic resonance spectral parameters and their structural applications.

An accurate quantum chemical (QC) modeling of 77 Se and 125 Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra is deeply involved in the NMR structural assignment for selenium and tellurium compounds that are of utmost importance both in organic and inorganic chemistry nowadays due to their huge application potential in many fields, like biology, medicine, and metallurgy. The main interest of this review is focused on the progress in QC computations of 77 Se and 125 Te NMR chemical shifts and indirect spin-spin coupling constants involving these nuclei. Different computational methodologies that have been used to simulate the NMR spectra of selenium and tellurium compounds since the middle of the 1990s are discussed with a strong emphasis on their accuracy. A special accent is placed on the calculations resorting to the relativistic methodologies, because taking into account the relativistic effects appreciably influences the precision of NMR calculations of selenium and, especially, tellurium compounds. Stereochemical applications of quantum chemical calculations of 77 Se and 125 Te NMR parameters are discussed so as to exemplify the importance of integrated approach of experimental and computational NMR techniques.

NMR Spin-Spin Coupling Constants Derived from Relativistic Four-Component DFT Theory-Analysis and Visualization.

An unambiguous assignment of coupling pathways plays an important role in the description and rationalization of NMR indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs). Unfortunately, the SSCC analysis and visualization tools currently available to quantum chemists are restricted to nonrelativistic theory. Here, we present the theoretical foundation for novel relativistic SSCC visualization techniques based on analysis of the SSCC densities and the first-order current densities induced by the nuclear magnetic dipole moments. Details of the implementation of these techniques in the ReSpect program package are discussed. Numerical assessments are performed on through-space SSCCs, and we choose as our examples the heavy-atom Se-Se, Se-Te, and Te-Te coupling constants in three similar molecules for which experimental data are available. SSCCs were calculated at the nonrelativistic, scalar relativistic, and four-component relativistic density functional levels of theory. Furthermore, with the aid of different visualization methods, we discuss the interpretation of the relativistic effects, which are sizable for Se-Se, very significant for Se-Te, and cannot be neglected for Te-Te couplings. A substantial improvement of the theoretical SSCC values is obtained by also considering the molecular properties of a second conformation.

What is the form of muscimol from fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) in water? An insight from NMR experiment supported by molecular modeling

The biologically active alkaloid muscimol is present in fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria), and its structure and action is related to human neurotransmitter γ -aminobutyric acid (GABA). The current study reports on determination of muscimol form present in water solution using multinuclear 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments supported by density functional theory molecular modeling. The structures of three forms of free muscimol molecule both in the gas phase and in the presence of water solvent, modeled by polarized continuous model, and nuclear magnetic isotropic shieldings, the corresponding chemical shifts, and indirect spin-spin coupling constants were calculated. Several J-couplings observed in proton and carbon NMR spectra, not available before, are reported. The obtained experimental spectra, supported by theoretical calculations, favor the zwitterion form of muscimol in water. This structure differs from NH isomer, previously determined in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. In addition, positions of signals C3 and C5 are reversed in both solvents.

Close Relationships between NMR J-Coupling Alternation (JCA) and Molecular Properties of Carbon Chains.

We propose a J-coupling alternation (JCA) value that is demonstrated to be a suitable parameter to evaluate the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) as a function of molecular properties of chains by increasing their length. As an application, we report a theoretical study of the SSCCs for the interactions between neighbor nuclei in increasingly patterned carbon chains within density functional theory. First, we examine the J-coupling constants between 1H and 13C nuclei ( n JHC) considering the separation distance, as well as between two adjacent 13C nuclei (1 JCC) considering their relative positions in polyynes and cumulenes. Further, we define and determine JCA in terms of the differences of 1 JCC, which is investigated as a function of several molecular properties, e.g., cohesive energy, characteristic vibrational frequency, average polarizability, and energy gap of the systems. We also determine JCA for other types of carbon chains, such as diphenyl-capped polyynes, polyacetylene and polythiophene. The behavior of JCA as a function of the energy gap may be related to highly π-conjugated low-band-gap carbon chains. Overall, JCA correlates very well with the electronic properties of these chains, especially with their energy gap, exhibiting positive values for pristine polyyne and polythiophene and negative values for pristine cumulene and plyacetylene. These findings indicate an alternative way to establish an appropriate SSCC descriptor that characterizes the electronic nature of the system, such as the proposed JCA value averaging the whole system, instead of using only the individual J-coupling values to give insights into the properties of large and extended systems.

Proton detection of carbon-carbon couplings in symmetrical molecules: Analytical explanation, SYMONA pulse sequence.

The approach to the measurement of one-bond indirect spin-spin coupling constants between equivalent nuclei was revisited. The analytical formulas for development of the density matrix of strongly coupled symmetrical HC-C'H' spin systems were derived and the optimal duration of polarization delay in the original 2QHMBC pulse sequence is discussed. Based on the analytical formulas a new version of a robust indirect detection experiment, called SYMONA (SYmmetrical MOlecules Natural Abundance double-quantum experiment), was proposed for carbon-carbon coupling constants detection in symmetrical molecules. Additionally, application of the SYMONA experiment to more complicated spin systems than isolated HC-C'H' is discussed.

On the development of the exact two-component relativistic method for calculating indirect NMR spin-spin coupling constants

Recently, to obtain the proper basis functions of small component spinors from the basis functions of large component spinors, the restricted magnetic balance (RMB) has been used in relativistic calculations of molecular magnetic properties, instead of the restricted kinetic balance (RKB). In this study, we attempt to develop the RMB-based exact two-component relativistic method, i.e., RMB-based normalized elimination of the small component (RMB-NESC) method for calculating indirect NMR spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs), as well as the RKB-NESC method. The RMB-NESC SSCC formulas require complicated one-electron integrals, unlike the RKB-NESC SSCC formulas. However, the standard integral evaluation method for the complicated integrals has not yet been established, while we calculate them by using the finite-size nuclear model and partial integration. By comparison with the RKB-NESC and experimental SSCC values, we discuss whether the RMB-NESC results are valid. Finally, we conclude that our calculation for the complicated integrals must have some problems.

Convergence of nuclear magnetic shieldings and one-bond 1 J(11 B1 H) indirect spin-spin coupling constants in small boron molecules.

Self-consistent field Hartree-Fock, density functional theory, and coupled-cluster calculations of the nuclear magnetic shielding constants of BH and BH3 molecules have been conducted to characterize the convergence of individual results obtained with correlation-consistent and polarization-consistent basis sets. The individual 11 B and 1 H NMR parameters were estimated in the complete basis set limit and compared with benchmark results. Only the KT3 density functional accurately reproduced 11 B shielding in BH molecule.

Relativistic effects on the NMR parameters of Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb alkynyl compounds: Scalar versus spin-orbit effects.

The NMR chemical shifts and indirect spin-spin coupling constants of 12 molecules containing 29Si, 73Ge, 119Sn, and 207Pb [X(CCMe)4, Me2X(CCMe)2, and Me3XCCH] are presented. The results are obtained from non-relativistic as well as two- and four-component relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The scalar and spin-orbit relativistic contributions as well as the total relativistic corrections are determined. The main relativistic effect in these molecules is not due to spin-orbit coupling but rather to the scalar relativistic contraction of the s-shells. The correlation between the calculated and experimental indirect spin-spin coupling constants showed that the four-component relativistic density functional theory (DFT) approach using the Perdew's hybrid scheme exchange-correlation functional (PBE0; using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange and correlation functionals) gives results in good agreement with experimental values. The indirect spin-spin coupling constants calculated using the spin-orbit zeroth order regular approximation together with the hybrid PBE0 functional and the specially designed J-coupling (JCPL) basis sets are in good agreement with the results obtained from the four-component relativistic calculations. For the coupling constants involving the heavy atoms, the relativistic corrections are of the same order of magnitude compared to the non-relativistically calculated results. Based on the comparisons of the calculated results with available experimental values, the best results for all the chemical shifts and non-existing indirect spin-spin coupling constants for all the molecules are reported, hoping that these accurate results will be used to benchmark future DFT calculations. The present study also demonstrates that the four-component relativistic DFT method has reached a level of maturity that makes it a convenient and accurate tool to calculate indirect spin-spin coupling constants of "large" molecular systems involving heavy atoms.

Visualization of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Hyperfine Structure Coupling Pathways

The close relation between the EPR hyperfine coupling constant and NMR indirect spin-spin coupling constant is well-known. For example, the Karplus-type dependence of hyperfine constants on the dihedral angle, originally proposed for NMR spin-spin coupling, is widely used in pNMR studies. In the present work we propose a new tool for visualization of hyperfine coupling pathways based on our experience with visualization of NMR indirect spin-spin couplings. The plotted 3D-function is the difference between the total electron densities when the magnetic moment of the nucleus of interest changes its sign and as such is an observable from the physical point of view. It has been shown that it is proportional to the linear response of the spin density to the nuclear spin (i.e., magnetic moment). In contrast to the widely used visualization of spin density, our new approach depicts only the part of the electron cloud of a molecule that is affected by the interaction of the unpaired electron(s) with the desired nuclear magnetic moment. Because visualization of NMR spin-spin couplings and hyperfine interaction is based on the same ideas and done using similar techniques, it allows a direct comparison of the corresponding pathways for the two phenomena so as to analyze their resemblance and/or dissimilarity.

NMR J-Coupling Constants of Tl-Pt Bonded Metal Complexes in Aqueous Solution: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and Localized Orbital Analysis.

The influence of solvent (water) coordination and dynamics on the electronic structure and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) indirect spin-spin coupling (J-coupling) constants in a series of Tl-Pt bonded complexes is investigated using Kohn-Sham (KS) Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) and relativistic hybrid KS NMR calculations with and without coordination to water. Coordination of the Tl center by water molecules has a dramatic impact on 1J(Tl-Pt) and other J-coupling constants. It is shown that a previous computational study of the same complexes using static optimized structures and nonhybrid functionals was correct about the important role of the solvent but obtained reasonable agreement with experimental NMR data because of a cancellation of substantial errors. For example, the CPMD trajectories show that on average the inner coordination shell of Tl is not saturated, as previously assumed, which leads to poor agreement with experiment when the J-coupling constants are averaged over the CPMD trajectories using NMR calculations with nonhybrid functionals. The combination of CPMD with hybrid KS NMR calculations provides a much more realistic computational model that reproduces the large magnitudes of 1J(Tl-Pt) and the correct trends for other coupling constants. An analysis of 1J(Tl-Pt) in terms of localized orbitals shows that the presence of coordinating water molecules increases the capacity for covalent interactions between Tl and Pt. There is pronounced multicenter bonding along the metal-metal axis of the complexes.

Indirect Spin-Spin Coupling Constants in the Hydrogen Isotopologues.

The results of experimental and theoretical studies of indirect spin-spin coupling constants for hydrogen deuteride (HD), hydrogen tritide (HT), and deuterium tritide (DT) are described. The reduced coupling constants obtained from the gas-phase NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) experiment conducted at 300 K are 2.338(1), 2.334(3), and 2.316(1) × 10(20) T(2) J(-1), while the ab initio values computed at the full configuration interaction level of theory equal 2.349(3), 2.343(3), and 2.322(3) × 10(20) T(2) J(-1) for HD, HT, and DT, respectively. The agreement of the experimental and theoretical results is improved when proper treatment of the influence of nuclear relaxation on the NMR spectrum is applied. However, there is a minor discrepancy between experiment and theory, exceeding the estimated error bars; potential sources of this discrepancy are discussed.

Electronic Structure, NMR, Spin-Spin Coupling, and Noncovalent Interactions in Aromatic Amino Acid Based Ionic Liquids.

Noncovalent interactions accompanying phenylalanine (Phe), tryptophan (Trp), and tyrosine (Tyr) amino acids based ionic liquids (AAILs) composed of 1-methyl-3-butyl-imidazole and its methyl-substituted derivative as cations have been analyzed employing the dispersion corrected density functional theory. It has been shown that cation-anion binding in these bioionic ILs is primarily facilitated through hydrogen bonding in addition to lp---π and CH---π interactions those arising from aromatic moieties which can be probed through (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra calculated from the gauge independent atomic orbital method. Characteristic NMR spin-spin coupling constants across hydrogen bonds of ion pair structures viz., Fermi contact, spin-orbit and spin-dipole terms show strong dependence on mutual orientation of cation with the amino acid anion. The spin-spin coupling mechanism transmits spin polarization via electric field effect originating from lp---π interactions whereas the electron delocalization from lone pair on the carbonyl oxygen to antibonding C-H orbital is facilitated by hydrogen bonding. It has been demonstrated that indirect spin-spin coupling constants across the hydrogen bonds correlate linearly with hydrogen bond distances. The binding energies and dissected nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) document mutual reduction of aromaticity of hydrogen bonded ion pairs consequent to localization of π-character. Moreover the nature and type of such noncovalent interactions governing the in-plane and out-of-plane NICS components provide a measure of diatropic and paratropic currents for the aromatic rings of varying size in AAILs. Besides the direction of frequency shifts of characteristic C═O and NH stretching vibrations in the calculated vibrational spectra has been rationalized.

On the truncation of the number of excited states in density functional theory sum-over-states calculations of indirect spin spin coupling constants.

It is investigated, whether the number of excited (pseudo)states can be truncated in the sum-over-states expression for indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs), which is used in the Contributions from Localized Orbitals within the Polarization Propagator Approach and Inner Projections of the Polarization Propagator (IPPP-CLOPPA) approach to analyzing SSCCs in terms of localized orbitals. As a test set we have studied the nine simple compounds, CH4, NH3, H2O, SiH4, PH3, SH2, C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6. The excited (pseudo)states were obtained from time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations with the B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and the specialized core-property basis set, aug-cc-pVTZ-J. We investigated both how the calculated coupling constants depend on the number of (pseudo)states included in the summation and whether the summation can be truncated in a systematic way at a smaller number of states and extrapolated to the total number of (pseudo)states for the given one-electron basis set. We find that this is possible and that for some of the couplings it is sufficient to include only about 30% of the excited (pseudo)states.

Assessing distortion of the AF 6 − (A=As, Sb) octahedra in solid hexafluorometallates(V) via NMR spectroscopy

Arsenic and antimony hexafluoride salts have played an important role in the history of both solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Here, solid polycrystalline KAsF6 and KSbF6 have been studied via high-resolution variable temperature 19F, 75As, 121Sb, and 123Sb solid-state NMR spectroscopy at high magnetic field (B0 = 21.14 T). Both KAsF6 and KSbF6 undergo solid-solid phase transitions at approximately 375 and 301 K, respectively. We use variable temperature NMR experiments to explore the effects of crystal structure changes on NMR parameters. CQ(75As) values for KAsF6 at 293, 323, and 348 K are −2.87 ± 0.05 MHz, −2.58 ± 0.05 MHz, and −2.30 ± 0.05 MHz, respectively, the sign determined via DFT calculations. In the higher temperature cubic phase, CQ(75As) = 0 Hz, consistent with the crystal symmetry at the arsenic nucleus in this phase. In contrast, CQ values for 121Sb and 123Sb in the cubic phase of KSbF6 are nonzero. E.g., at 293 K, CQ(121Sb) = 6.42 ± 0.10 MHz, and CQ(123Sb) = 8.22 ± 0.10 MHz. In the higher temperature tetragonal phase (343 K) of KSbF6, these values are 3.11 ± 0.20 MHz and 4.06 ± 0.20 MHz, respectively. CASTEP calculations performed on the cubic and tetragonal structures support this trend. Isotropic indirect spin-spin coupling constants are 1J(75As,19F) = −926 ± 10 Hz (293 K) and −926 ± 3 Hz (348 K), and 1J(121Sb,19F) = −1884 ± 3 Hz (293 K), and −1889 ± 3 Hz (343 K). Arsenic-75 and antimony-121,123 chemical shift values show little variation over the studied temperature ranges.
