Exploring Alashan Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus alashanicus) Diversity: Metagenomic and Transcriptomic Datasets from the Helan Mountains

This study investigates the adaptive strategies of the Alashan Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus alashanicus) in response to habitat changes, as rodents are sensitive indicators of ecosystem changes. Despite its ecological importance, the genome and microbiome of this species have not been thoroughly studied. This research fills this gap by presenting the first comprehensive metagenomic and transcriptomic datasets of the species. Transcriptomic data was collected from five tissue types, including heart, liver, cecum, muscle, and blood, resulting in the assembly of 72,156 unigenes. Metagenomic sequencing identified predominant bacterial groups such as Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, Urovircota, and Proteobacteria. Our workflow involved RNA and DNA extraction, library preparation, assembly, and annotation, yielding valuable insights into gene discovery, microbial composition, and further genome and microbial function studies. In conclusion, our findings have significant implications for understanding the adaptive mechanisms of this species in response to environmental changes.

The capacity of sentinel species to detect changes in environmental conditions and ecosystem structure

Abstract A major obstacle to preventing and reversing biodiversity loss in the Anthropocene lies in the scarcity of tools and data for monitoring the health and trajectory of ecosystems. Sentinel species can provide insight into unobserved ecosystem change, but it is unclear how effective sentinels are due to the local, context‐dependent nature of past research. Here, we present the first global evaluation on the effectiveness of sentinel species as indicators of ecosystem change. We conducted a meta‐analysis on 372 case studies to identify the ecological and methodological factors that correlate with the most effective sentinel species. Sentinel performance did not vary consistently across taxa or system; instead, sentinels that were more directly linked to ecosystem change due to their trophic role as predators were more effective. In addition, sentinel responses that were measured on a shorter timescale were more effective at indicating ecosystem change. Policy Implications. These results contribute to the longstanding debate on “what makes a good sentinel” and demonstrate the importance of both ecological and methodological factors when selecting sentinels to detect ecosystem change. For example, sentinel species which are trophically linked and measured on short timescales may be more effective for managers seeking to monitor ecosystem change than other species. By identifying effective traits for the use of sentinel species, scientists and policymakers will be able to develop rapid and adaptable management plans in response to global change.

Downscaled seasonal forecasts for the California Current System: Skill assessment and prospects for living marine resource applications

Ocean forecasting is now widely recognized as an important approach to improve the resilience of marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and economies to climate variability and change. In particular, regionally tailored forecasts may serve as the foundation for a wide range of applications to facilitate proactive decision making. Here, we describe and assess ~30 years of retrospective seasonal (1–12 month) forecasts for the California Current System, produced by forcing a regional ocean model with output from a global forecast system. Considerable forecast skill is evident for surface and bottom temperatures, sea surface height, and upper ocean stratification. In contrast, mixed layer depth, surface wind stress, and surface currents exhibit little predictability. Ocean conditions tend to be more predictable in the first half of the year, owing to greater persistence for forecasts initialized in winter and dynamical forecast skill consistent with winter/spring influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) for forecasts initialized in summer. Forecast skill above persistence appears to come through the ocean more than through the atmosphere. We also test the sensitivity of forecast performance to downscaling method; bias correcting global model output before running the regional model greatly reduces bias in the downscaled forecasts, but only marginally improves prediction of interannual variability. We then tailor the physical forecast evaluation to a suite of potential ecological applications, including species distribution and recruitment, bycatch and ship-strike risk, and indicators of ecosystem change. This evaluation serves as a template for identifying promising ecological forecasts based on the physical parameters that underlie them. Finally, we discuss suggestions for developing operational forecast products, including methodological considerations for downscaling as well as the respective roles of regional and global forecasts.

Patterns, Trends, and Causes of Vegetation Change in the Three Rivers Headwaters Region

The Three Rivers Headwaters Region (TRHR), situated in the high-altitude region of the Tibetan Plateau, represents a critical ecological security barrier for both China and Southeast Asia. In addition to providing a vital freshwater supply for China, it is also one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. However, the region is characterized by a fragile and sensitive ecosystem, which makes it particularly vulnerable to environmental disturbances. Given the role of vegetation as a reliable indicator of ecosystem changes, investigating the patterns and drivers of vegetation change in the TRHR can provide valuable insights into the state and trajectory of its ecological system. To assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation changes in TRHR, this study constructed a comprehensive vegetation index (CVI) based on leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover (FVC), and net primary productivity (NPP). Trend analysis and significance testing were employed to detect and quantify the magnitude and direction of vegetation changes over the past two decades. Moreover, correlation analysis, spatial overlay, and statistical modeling techniques were applied to examine the relative contributions of climate, land use/cover changes, and slope altitude to CVI changes. The results showed the following: (1) the CVI in the TRHR showed an overall increasing trend from 2000 to 2019, with an average annual increase of 0.6%, indicating a positive development trend of vegetation, but with obvious spatial differences. (2) The vegetation in the TRHR has shown a marked increase over the past two decades, with significant increase accounting for 19% of the total area, mainly concentrated in the Yellow River Basin. Conversely, a significant decline in vegetation was observed in 3% of the total area, predominantly in the Yangtze River Basin. (3) Both temperature and precipitation had a positive impact on vegetation restoration in the TRHR, but the area affected by temperature was larger than that affected by precipitation. (4) The land-use regime had a discernible impact on vegetation increase, with the conversion of land use to ecological land promoting vegetation restoration. However, the efficacy of restoration efforts might have varied depending on natural resource endowments in certain regions. (5) With increasing altitude, vegetation conditions initially improved before eventually deteriorating. Conversely, as the slope increased, vegetation experienced an initial improvement before ultimately stabilizing. This study helps to understand the overall changes and driving mechanisms of vegetation in the TRHR and provides a scientific basis and decision-making reference for the dynamic adjustment of vegetation restoration and ecological engineering in the region in the future.

Historical changes in mortality patterns of diurnal and nocturnal raptors in the Czech Republic, Central Europe: 1913–2017

Raptors are apex predators and essential environmental indicators of ecosystem changes, with anthropogenic mortality heavily influencing their population trends. However, mortality factors can change over time, potentially diverting attention from the underlying drivers of raptor declines. Therefore, a broader perspective beyond studying contemporary mortality patterns for individual species is necessary to prioritize conservation efforts across raptor species. Our study analyzed data from six databases spanning 1913–2017 for the recoveries of 24,443 dead birds, including 24 diurnal and nocturnal raptor species in the Czech Republic. Our results showed that direct persecution historically dominated raptor mortality, but contemporary patterns are shaped by different sources of anthropogenic mortality. Mortality due to vehicle collisions, electrocution or collision at powerlines, and other anthropogenic sources gradually increased from 1913 until 2000 but began to decline in the last two decades. After 2000, vehicle collisions caused higher mortality rates than mortality linked to powerlines and other anthropogenic causes. Natural mortality was lower than average anthropogenic mortality during 1913–1990 but prevailed over anthropogenic mortality after 2000. Species-specific variation in raptor mortality causes was also detected. Direct persecution was the most common mortality factor for diurnal species with higher human-wildlife conflict. Powerline mortality affected mainly farmland and larger raptors, while vehicle collisions were the most significant mortality factor for most owl species and other anthropogenic mortality for barn owls Tyto alba. Raptor conservation efforts should prioritize reducing direct persecution, but coordinated actions to mitigate vehicle collision mortality are also necessary for nocturnal raptors.

Species Diversity and Driving Factors of Benthic and Zooplanktonic Assemblages at Different Stages of Thermokarst Lake Development: A Case Study in the Lena River Delta (Middle Siberia)

Global climate change might result in permafrost thaw and the formation of thermokarst landscapes that release long-term carbon stocks as greenhouse into the atmosphere, thereby initiating a positive climate feedback. These processes are mediated by biological activity, including by microbes, vascular plants and animals, whereas the role of invertebrates in thermokarst ecosystems remains poorly understood. We investigated the diversity and assemblage structures of zooplankton (mainly Copepoda, Cladocera), microbenthos (testate amoebae) and meio- (Copepoda and Cladocera) and macrozoobenthos (mollusks, crustaceans, insects and annelids) from a range of water bodies representing different stages of thermokarst lake formation in the southern part of the Lena River Delta (Central Siberia). Altogether, 206 species of testate amoeba, mollusk, crustacean, insect and annelid taxa were identified. A total of 60 species of macrozoobenthos (mainly insects) and 62 species of testate amoebae were detected in the water bodies of the Lena River Delta for the first time. The species richness of zooplankton and meio- and macrozoobenthos was greater in the large thermokarst lakes than in the polygonal ponds due to the freezing of the latter in the winter. In contrast, the species richness of protists was higher in the polygonal ponds, which was related to the habitat preferences of testate amoebae. Fish grazing strongly affected the macrobenthos assemblages but not the smaller-sized organisms. Water acidity and temperature were the main environmental drivers of the assemblage structure of testate amoeba and microcrustacean. The species structure of the macroinvertebrate assemblages was significantly explained by water acidity, permafrost depth and size of the water area. It means that small size organisms with their short generation times are sensitive to more dynamic factors such as temperature and may serve as indicators of ecosystem changes due to global climate warming. In contrast, large size organisms are affected by driven factors that appear during thermokarst lakes formation and permafrost degradation.

Practice makes the expert: The importance of training volunteers in the generation of phenological data from photographs of biodiversity observation platforms.

Phenology studies the time at which events in the life cycle of a species occur sand how they are related to environmental cues. Patterns of change in phenology at different scales can be used as an indicator of ecosystem changes and climate change, but the data necessary to detect these changes can be difficult to obtain due to their temporal and regional dimensions. Citizen science can contribute to generate large amounts of data on phenological changes at wide geographical scales that would be almost impossible for professional scientists to generate, but the quality and reliability of these data are often questioned. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a biodiversity observation citizen science platform based on photographic information as a potential source of large-scale phenological information, and to identify the key benefits and limitations of this type of information source. We used the Naturalista photographic databases for two invasive species in a tropical region: Leonotis nepetifolia and Nicotiana glauca. The photographs were classified into different phenophases (initial growth, immature flower, mature flower, dry fruit) by three groups of volunteers: a group of experts, a trained group with information on the biology and phenology of both species, and an untrained group. The degree of reliability of the phenological classifications was estimated for each group of volunteers and each phenophase. The degree of reliability of the phenological classification of the untrained group was generally very low for all phenophases. The group of trained volunteers showed accuracy levels for the reproductive phenophases that equaled the degree of reliability among the expert group, regardless of species, and was consistent across phenophases. We conclude that volunteer classification of photographic information contained in biodiversity observation platforms can provide phenological information with high geographic coverage and an increasing temporal coverage on general phenological patterns of species with wide distributions but has limited applicability in the identification of exact start and end dates. and peaks of the different phenophases.

Temporal and spatial variability in stable isotope values on seabird islands: What, where and when to sample

Invasive mammal eradications are widely used for managing island ecosystems. However, tracking the outcomes of such large-scale, whole ecosystem projects is challenging and costly, and monitoring all components of an ecosystem is near impossible. Instead, indicators of ecosystem change may provide more practical and integrated measures of ecosystem response to eradications. As high-order marine predators, seabirds subsidise island ecosystems with nutrients isotopically enriched in nitrogen. Invasive mammals have caused a global decline of seabirds on islands, reducing this nutrient subsidisation. Following eradications, nitrogen stable isotope analysis may provide a useful and resource-efficient indicator of ecosystem functional change on eradicated islands. However, isotope ratios are affected by a myriad of factors, with potential sources of variation being introduced by spatial and temporal variation in sampling, and within and between different taxa and ecosystem components. To correctly attribute isotopic change to post-eradication ecosystem function change, these confounding variables need to be understood. To address this need, we analysed stable isotopes of nitrogen in soil, plant, spider, and seabird guano samples collected at different distances from seabird colonies and at different stages of the short-tailed shearwater breeding cycle on six island sites around south-eastern Tasmania, Australia. Across these cool, temperate islands we detected no temporal variability in δ15N throughout the breeding season. However, there was notable spatial variability in δ15N values. The effects of seabird-derived nutrient subsidisation were highly localised with high δ15N values found inside seabird colonies and then rapidly decreasing from the colony boundary. Higher δ15N values also occurred in areas of higher burrow density within a colony. Variability in δ15N values also existed both within and between ecosystem components. Our results highlight the importance of context dependency when using ecological indicators and have important implications for the design, implementation and interpretation of studies employing stable isotopes as indicators for ecosystem change. We provide recommendations for designing future stable isotope studies on seabird islands.

Estimating Fractional Vegetation Cover Changes in Desert Regions Using RGB Data

Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important indicator of ecosystem changes. Both satellite remote sensing and ground measurements are common methods for estimating FVC. However, desert vegetation grows sparsely and scantly and spreads widely in desert regions, making it challenging to accurately estimate its vegetation cover using satellite data. In this study, we used RGB images from two periods: images from 2006 captured with a small, light manned aircraft with a resolution of 0.1 m and images from 2019 captured with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a resolution of 0.02 m. Three pixel-based machine learning algorithms, namely gradient enhancement decision tree (GBDT), k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF), were used to classify the main vegetation (woody and grass species) and calculate the coverage. An independent data set was used to evaluate the accuracy of the algorithms. Overall accuracies of GBDT, KNN and RF for 2006 image classification were 0.9140, 0.9190 and 0.9478, respectively, with RF achieving the best classification results. Overall accuracies of GBDT, KNN and RF for 2019 images were 0.8466, 0.8627 and 0.8569, respectively, with the KNN algorithm achieving the best results for vegetation cover classification. The vegetation coverage in the study area changed significantly from 2006 to 2019, with an increase in grass coverage from 15.47 ± 1.49% to 27.90 ± 2.79%. The results show that RGB images are suitable for mapping FVC. Determining the best spatial resolution for different vegetation features may make estimation of desert vegetation coverage more accurate. Vegetation cover changes are also important in terms of understanding the evolution of desert ecosystems.

Changes in sea ice and range expansion of sperm whales in the eclipse sound region of Baffin Bay, Canada.

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are a cosmopolitan species but are only found in ice‐free regions of the ocean. It is unknown how their distribution might change in regions undergoing rapid loss of sea ice and ocean warming like Baffin Bay in the eastern Canadian Arctic. In 2014 and 2018, sperm whales were sighted near Eclipse Sound, Baffin Bay: the first recorded uses of this region by sperm whales. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of sperm whales near Eclipse Sound using visual and acoustic data. We combine several published open‐source, data sets to create a map of historical sperm whale presence in the region. We use passive acoustic data from two recording sites between 2015 and 2019 to investigate more recent presence in the region. We also analyze regional trends in sea ice concentration (SIC) dating back to 1901 and relate acoustic presence of sperm whales to the mean SIC near the recording sites. We found no records of sperm whale sightings near Eclipse Sound outside of the 2014/2018 observations. Our acoustic data told a different story, with sperm whales recorded yearly from 2015 to 2019 with presence in the late summer and fall months. Sperm whale acoustic presence increased over the 5‐year study duration and was closely related to the minimum SIC each year. Sperm whales, like other cetaceans, are ecosystem sentinels, or indicators of ecosystem change. Increasing number of days with sperm whale presence in the Eclipse Sound region could indicate range expansion of sperm whales as a result of changes in sea ice. Monitoring climate change‐induced range expansion in this region is important to understand how increasing presence of a top‐predator might impact the Arctic food web.

Temporal scope influences ecosystem driver-response relationships: A case study of Lake Erie with implications for ecosystem-based management

Understanding environmental driver-response relationships is critical to the implementation of effective ecosystem-based management. Ecosystems are often influenced by multiple drivers that operate on different timescales and may be nonstationary. In turn, contrasting views of ecosystem state and structure could arise depending on the temporal perspective of analysis. Further, assessment of multiple ecosystem components (e.g., biological indicators) may serve to identify different key drivers and connections. To explore how the timescale of analysis and data richness can influence the identification of driver-response relationships within a large, dynamic ecosystem, this study analyzed long-term (1969–2018) data from Lake Erie (USA–Canada). Data were compiled on multiple biological, physical, chemical, and socioeconomic components of the ecosystem to quantify trends and identify potential key drivers during multiple time intervals (20 to 50 years duration), using zooplankton, bird, and fish community metrics as indicators of ecosystem change. Concurrent temporal shifts of many variables occurred during the 1980s, but asynchronous dynamics were evident among indicator taxa. The strengths and rank orders of predictive drivers shifted among intervals and were sometimes taxon-specific. Drivers related to nutrient loading and lake trophic status were consistently strong predictors of temporal patterns for all indicators; however, within the longer intervals, measures of agricultural land use were the strongest predictors, whereas within shorter intervals, the stronger predictors were measures of tributary or in-lake nutrient concentrations. Physical drivers also tended to increase in predictive ability within shorter intervals. The results highlight how the time interval examined can filter influences of lower-frequency, slower drivers and higher-frequency, faster drivers. Understanding ecosystem change in support of ecosystem-based management requires consideration of both the temporal perspective of analysis and the chosen indicators, as both can influence which drivers are identified as most predictive of ecosystem trends at that timescale.

Allocation of the diet of the Argentine Islands’ inshore ichthyofauna

Fish diets are important indicators of ecosystem change. This aspect of the ichthyofauna of the coast of the Argentine Islands has been insufficiently studied in comparison with other regions. This article presents the results of comparison of dietary and somatic parameters of the dominant species Notothenia coriiceps depending on the point, depth and season of catch. The sample was collected between February 2006 and February 2007. In the year of study, N. coriiceps, Trematomus bernacchii, Chaenocephalus aceratus (common species), Harpagifer antarcticus and Pagothenia borchgrevinki (rare species in this region) were caught. The average fish size in this region does not differ from other places in the Southern Ocean. In Cornice Channel and Stella Creek, N. coriiceps was smaller than at other points due to the narrowness and shallow depth of these places. In winter, large individuals apparently migrated from the coast. The diet of N. coriiceps consisted mainly of crustaceans and seaweeds, with a small number of mollusks (especially limpets), which are common. The number of fish in the diet of N. coriiceps is relatively low for this region. Access to food was relatively the same at different points and depths of the catch. The lowest amount of food was in the fall, the highest amount of food was in the spring and summer. The condition and hepatosomatic index also did not change depending on the point and depth of the catch, but they were low in spring and high in summer. Perhaps this is due to the low energy value of food, which is not compensated by the amount. It is necessary to conduct studies of the diet of N. coriiceps in other years to clarify the specificity of fish in the diet and phenological changes in somatic parameters. Similar studies are needed for other species in the region if catches are sufficient to collect a representative sample.

The Merodon planifacies subgroup (Diptera, Syrphidae): Congruence of molecular and morphometric evidences reveal new taxa in Drakensberg mountains valleys (Republic of South Africa)

Hoverflies (Syrphidae) represent an insect group of great importance in ecosystems and indicators of ecosystem change. The genus Merodon Meigen, 1803 (tribe Merodontini) is one of the most species-rich hoverfly genera, distributed across the Palaearctic and Afrotropical regions. The genus Merodon Meigen, 1803 is less diverse in the Afrotropical Region than in the Palaearctic (11 versus 160 known species). An ongoing study of the genus Merodon in Africa has revealed the existence of two new species into the taxon previously known as Merodon planifacies Bezzi, 1915. The M. planifacies subgroup belongs to the Afrotropical lineage of the Merodon desuturinus group. Morphological analysis of male genitalia has classified the available specimens of the M. planifacies taxon into two sets: the first one corresponds to M. planifacies with folded theca, while the other with smooth theca, later named Merodon capi complex was found exclusively at the Drakensberg mountains in the Republic of South Africa, specifically in the Cathedral Peak National Park and the Royal Natal National Park. Further, molecular and morphometric evidences revealed two cryptic taxa within this complex: M. capi sp. nov. Vujić et Radenković and Merodon roni sp. nov. Radenković et Vujić.

Functional syndromes as indicators of ecosystem change in temperate grasslands

The lack of an organizing conceptual framework to address ecosystem changes reduces our capacity to distinguish biophysical from direct human impacts on grassland dynamics. This is particularly important for subhumid temperate grasslands, one of the world’s most threatened biomes. We identified and mapped 4 functional syndromes of grassland change at the wettest end of its worldwide distribution, the Campos in Uruguay. Syndromes were defined by differences in precipitation use efficiency (PUE, ANPP/precipitation), and in precipitation marginal response (PMR, slope of the linear regression between ANPP and precipitation) between two periods (1981–1995 and 2001–2011). Temporal trends in aboveground net primary production (ANPP, obtained by splicing two sources of NDVI, LTDR and MOD13Q1) were also characterized. To rule out the effect of precipitation we analyzed temporal trends of the residuals from the relationship between ANPP and annual precipitation (RESTRENDS). Functional syndromes associated with increases in seasonality or in the abundance of annual vegetation (ΔPMR > 0, ΔPUE < 0, ∼14,000 km2) and vegetation cover loss (ΔPUE < 0 and ΔPMR < 0, >5000 km2) were the most abundant. ANPP trends were significantly negative in 3.7% of the area (2475 km2) and only positive in 0.3%. However, RESTRENDS were significant in 11% of the area (>7700 km2), and mostly negative (in ∼7200 km2). Most of these negative trends and residual trends were associated to seasonality increase and vegetation loss syndromes. These patterns were consistent with observed changes in the region. We highlight that this conceptual framework is suitable for describing patterns of change and potential causes. Moreover, it provides policymakers with a novel tool to guide management and conservation policies, pointing to sites where intervention (i.e. conservation, restoration) is needed.

Svalbard reindeer as an indicator of ecosystem changes in the Arctic terrestrial ecosystem

Over the years, noticeable effort has been directed towards contaminant determination in multiple biotic samples collected from the inhabitants of the Arctic. Little consideration has been given to polar herbivores, however, especially those from the European parts of the Arctic. To provide a broader perspective, we aimed to decipher trace element concentration in hairs of the key species in the Arctic, namely the Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus), and to recognise whether diet variations could correspond with forward exposure. The effect of habitat and diet was investigated using the ratios of stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), and previous literature studies on vegetation from the areas of interest. Analysis was performed for eighteen elements in total, both toxic and essential. Metals were present in a decreasing order Fe > Zn > Ba > Cu > Pb > Cr > Ni > V > Ga =La > Rb > As > Li > Co > Hg > Cd > Cs > Be. Similarity in trends in the studied subpopulations was observed for many metals. A significant log-linear correlation was observed for most of the elements, excluding nitrogen and carbon isotopes signature. Extremely high iron levels were determined in some of the samples, suggesting past iron overload. Zinc, in contrast to the remaining metals, did not correlate well with any other element. Mercury was determined at very low levels, in accordance with previous literature regarding its concentrations in moss and lichen species in Svalbard. The analysis of stable isotopes showed a high variation in nitrogen isotopes signatures. Further research is required to properly evaluate the potential health risks and ecological implications of elevated exposure.

Desertification, resilience, and re-greening in the African Sahel – a matter of the observation period?

Abstract. Since the turn of the millennium various scientific publications have been discussing a re-greening of the Sahel after the 1980s drought mainly based on coarse-resolution satellite data. However, the author's own field studies suggest that the situation is far more complex and that both paradigms, the encroaching Sahara and the re-greening Sahel, need to be questioned.This paper discusses the concepts of desertification, resilience, and re-greening by addressing four main aspects: (i) the relevance of edaphic factors for a vegetation re-greening, (ii-iii) the importance of the selected observation period in the debate on Sahel greening or browning, and (iv) modifications in the vegetation pattern as possible indicators of ecosystem changes (shift from originally diffuse to contracted vegetation patterns).The data referred to in this paper cover a time period of more than 150 years and include the author's own research results from the early 1980s until today. A special emphasis, apart from fieldwork data and remote sensing data, is laid on the historical documents.The key findings summarised at the end show the following: (i) vegetation recovery predominantly depends on soil types; (ii) when discussing Sahel greening vs. Sahel browning, the majority of research papers only focus on post-drought conditions. Taking pre-drought conditions (before the 1980s) into account, however, is essential to fully understand the situation. Botanical investigations and remote-sensing-based time series clearly show a substantial decline in woody species diversity and cover density compared to pre-drought conditions; (iii) the self-organised patchiness of vegetation is considered to be an important indicator of ecosystem changes.

Dietary Niche Shifts of Multiple Marine Predators under Varying Prey Availability on the Northeast Newfoundland Coast

Understanding species interactions among top marine predators and interactions with their prey can provide important insight into community-level responses to changing prey availability and the role of apex predators as indicators of ecosystem change. On the northeast Newfoundland coast, marine predators rely on capelin (Mallotus villosus), a dominant forage fish, as a food source. Capelin migrate into coastal regions to spawn during July, essentially transforming food supply from low during early summer (i.e. pre-spawning) to high later in the summer (i.e. spawning). During July-August, 2016, we used stable isotopic ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) to investigate shifts in dietary niche metrics at the predator group-level (trophic position, dietary niche breadth) and community-level (niche overlap, trophic diversity) for multiple marine predators under varying capelin availability. Predator groups included non-breeding shearwaters (great shearwater Ardenna gravis, sooty shearwater A. grisea), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), and gull chicks (herring gull Larus argentatus, great black-backed gull L. marinus). We also tested the sensitivity of community-level dietary metrics to a variety of published trophic discrimination factors. Tissue samples from shearwaters (blood cellular component), gull chicks (whole blood), and whales (skin), representing average diets over 2-3 weeks, were collected during three periods (early, mid, late) corresponding to increasing capelin availability. Isotopic niche breadth (Standard Ellipse Area, SEAb) narrowed and trophic position shifted toward higher δ15N for all predator groups as capelin availability increased, suggesting a higher reliance on capelin. Trophic diversity (distance to centroid) decreased with increased capelin availability, while pairwise niche overlap between predator groups was highly variable and sensitive to varying trophic discrimination factors. Findings suggest that although capelin is the dominant forage fish during the summer, predators rely on capelin as prey to varying degrees. Combining species- and community-level metrics of dietary niche and trophic diversity may provide a more complete picture of predator responses to prey availability and, thus, may be important monitoring tools to indicate changes in the food supply of marine predators.

The Diatom/Dinoflagellate Index as an Indicator of Ecosystem Changes in the Baltic Sea. 2. Historical Data for Use in Determination of Good Environmental Status

The diatom/dinoflagellate index (Dia/Dino index) serves as an indicator in the assessment of the ecological status of the Baltic Sea within the scope of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. It describes the dominance patterns in the phytoplankton spring bloom. Implementation of this indicator requires a definition of the conditions describing good environmental status (GES). The aim of this study was to determine thresholds for GES for the Dia/Dino index on the basis of historical phytoplankton data from different regions of the Baltic Sea. Data from the first half of the 20th century, corresponding to the pre-eutrophication period, provide an unadulterated reference, as exemplified by nutrient data. Early phytoplankton data showed high dominance of diatoms over dinoflagellates in spring blooms. Diatom dominance relates to a Dia/Dino index > 0.5, which allowed GES threshold of the Eastern Gotland Basin to be set at a Dia/Dino index of 0.5. The consistently very high Dia/Dino index in Kiel and Mecklenburg Bays supported a previously suggested GES threshold value of 0.75. Recent monitoring data revealed a sudden decrease of the Dia/Dino index, especially between 1984 and 1991, and thus a worsening environmental status. This deterioration could be attributed to warming rather than to eutrophication.

The Diatom/Dinoflagellate Index as an Indicator of Ecosystem Changes in the Baltic Sea 1. Principle and Handling Instruction

An ecosystem shift in the Baltic Proper at the end of the 1980s could be identified by a decreasing springtime diatom/dinoflagellate ratio. Therefore the suggested diatom/dinoflagellate index (Dia/Dino index) was developed as a descriptive indicator of ecosystem changes for applications pertaining to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Changes in the dominance of these two phytoplankton classes impact the food web because both their quality as a food source for grazers and their periods of occurrence differ, which may lead to a mismatch in zooplankton growth. The rapid sinking of diatoms results in a high Dia/Dino index, indicative of low-level food availability for zooplankton but high-level food delivery to the zoobenthos. Consequently, the Dia/Dino index can be used to follow the food pathway (Descriptor 4 of MSFD: “food web”). Moreover, a low Dia/Dino index may indicate silicate limitation caused by eutrophication, whereas a high Dia/Dino index supports mitigated eutrophication, as the strong sedimentation of nutrients removes them from the water and deposits them in the sediment (Descriptor 5 of MSFD: “eutrophication”). Diatom dominance, and thus a high Dia/Dino index, is typical in historical data and is therefore assumed to reflect good environmental status (GES). The principles of the Dia/Dino index are explained herein using examples from two very different regimes, the Eastern Gotland Basin and Kiel Bay. In the assessment of the environmental status of these water bodies, GES boundaries of 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, are suggested. The conditions for calculating the Dia/Dino index are described and the limitations and advantages of this indicator are discussed.

Spatiotemporal Variability of Benthic Communities on Weathervane Scallop Beds off Alaska

AbstractMarine benthic communities are critical biotic components of habitat due to their roles in ecosystem function and health and as indicators of ecosystem change. Benthic communities are receiving increasing attention as institutions adopt ecosystem-oriented research approaches. We conducted a multidecadal analysis of benthic communities in areas targeted by a commercial weathervane scallop Patinopecten caurinus fishery on the continental shelf off Alaska. Using bycatch data collected by onboard observers during 1996–2012, we analyzed spatiotemporal patterns in community composition on weathervane scallop beds. We also explored whether spatiotemporal differences were related to environmental (sediment and depth) and anthropogenic (dredging effort) variables.
