Assessment of the Trophic Status and Trend Using the Transitional Water Eutrophication Assessment Method: A Case Study from Venice Lagoon

The Transitional Water Eutrophication Assessment Method (TWEAM) is a multi-index set up for assessing the eutrophication risk and trend in transitional waters. It includes a selection of environmental variables, an ecological status indicator (i.e., Macrophyte Quality Index, MaQI) and the Transitional Water Quality Index (TWQI). Possible outcomes of the TWEAM include three trophic classes in terms of eutrophication risk: (i) eutrophic; (ii) non-eutrophic; (iii) mesotrophic. The method was applied on data collected at 28 stations in the Venice Lagoon over four triennial monitoring cycles (MC I-IV) in the period 2011–2022. The spatial variability and medium-term trend of eutrophication risk were investigated, highlighting a general improvement in trophic conditions over time, with a decrease in mesotrophic stations (representing 46% of total in MC-I and 25% in MC-IV) in favor of non-eutrophic stations (46% of total in MC-I and 73% in MC-IV). The main driver of observed positive changes is related to the colonization of sensitive macroalgae and aquatic angiosperms, resulting in an increase in the percentage of stations with MaQI in good/high ecological status from 25% in MC-I to 54% in MC-IV. Eutrophic sites showed a non-linear trend, particularly in choked areas of the central lagoon, with anthropogenic disturbances and low water renewal.

Winter atmospheric deposition of trace elements in the Arkhangelsk region (NW Russia): Insights into environmental effects

Atmospheric precipitation is an important indicator of ecological status. Snow cover accumulates all atmospheric precipitation that occurs during the cold season and releases large amounts of matter into surface water streams during spring snowmelt. We measured chemical composition of suspended solids (>0.45 μm) and dissolved matter (<0.45 μm) of atmospheric precipitation sampled on a monthly basis in 4 stations of Arkhangelsk region in cold seasons of 2018–2021. The fluxes of insoluble particles increase consistently in the spring months. In winter, the largest fluxes of suspended solids from the atmosphere were observed in the urbanized areas (in Severodvinsk and Onega). Snow in Onega showed a significant enrichment in Mn as well as Rb, Sr, Cs, Ba and Pb, which is related to boiler house emissions. Severodvinsk snow is enriched in V, Ni in dissolved fraction and Al, V, Cu, Sr, Pb in suspended solids. The environmental risk assessment shows that Onega station is affected to high and extremely polluted conditions for Mn concentration and Severodvinsk station is affected to multi-element pollution from moderate to significant levels. Comparison with the composition of the river runoff of the Northern Dvina showed that the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the snow are equal to or even higher than the river concentrations, indicating that atmospheric precipitation accumulated during winter can significantly affect the geochemistry of river runoff with respect to these elements.

The influence of databases enrichment using local macroinvertebrate genetic references for metabarcoding based biodiversity studies in river monitoring

Water resources play a vital role in sustaining ecosystems, human life, food security, and biodiversity. However, these resources currently face serious threats caused primarily by human activities. Because of that, European Union have mandated that all its member states monitor the ecological status of their water bodies. One of the most commonly used bioindicator groups for routine river biomonitoring is benthic macroinvertebrates, which rely mainly on morphological identification at the family level and the use of diverse indices to estimate the ecological status of the river ecosystem. The morphological approach has certain limitations, and metabarcoding is now considered an alternative technique for biodiversity studies and biomonitoring of surface waters. However, the efficacy of this approach depends on the comparison of sequencing data with genetic databases, which are often incomplete and geographically biased. In this study, we collected 92 macroinvertebrate samples from rivers in the northern Iberian Peninsula to identify all possible species and generate new DNA sequences for the COI-5P region. The objectives were to perform region-specific enrichment of reference databases for the geographical area of northern Spain and to assess the impact, before and after this strategy, on the taxonomic assignments used for ecological status inference in metabarcoding samples. The results showed that 21% of morphospecies lacked reference sequences in the BOLD or GenBank databases, indicating that a significant number of macroinvertebrate species in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula lack reference sequences in major genetic databases. Enriching the BOLD databases with new sequences led to the detection of an average of 17.25 more BINs (species-assimilable gene cluster) and 1.54 more IBMWP taxa (river ecological status indicator macroinvertebrate taxa) per sample, causing changes in the ecological status determination for 16% of the samples, which clearly shows that improving the databases with local species sequences could enhance the detection and identification of new IBMWP taxa, potentially impacting ecological status inference from molecular data. Additionally, a historical analysis of Iberian macroinvertebrate addition in the BOLD database using public BOLD records revealed an asymptotic trend that can be partially mitigated by region-specific enrichment. These results indicate that a local biota sequencing effort can considerably improve metabarcoding results rather than waiting for a gradual improvement of genetic databases. In conclusion, we advocate for a creation an Iberian freshwater macroinvertebrate checklist and then the initiation of a coordinated effort for sequencing any unsequenced species from the region.

DYNAMICS OF SPECIES CHANGE OF LIVING ABOVE GROUND COVER IN YOUNG CULTURES OF ZHEREBKIVO FORESTRY

The species composition of herbaceous vegetation in oak plantations before their closure were analyzed. It was found that after cutting down the mother stand, the diversity of plants from different families begins to increase already in the first year. According to the results of field observations, a sharp reduction of shade-tolerant species and an increase of light-loving and drought-resistant species was revealed. As a result, non-forest edifiers increase and the change of tree communities by grassy non-forest formations, uncharacteristic for forest biocenoses. Representatives of the Poaceae family, as well as Fabaceae and Rosales, characteristic of the steppe zone, begin to actively appear on a fresh log. In the following years, the dominant position is occupied by the family of Asteraceae. In the first year after felling, about 40 species were identified, over the years their number decreases, and already in the sixth year, the number of species is about 17 species. Analysis of the coenomorphic structure shows that in the first years the number of sylvans significantly decreases, some species disappear altogether from the plantations. Instead, ruderants (from 55% in the first year to 35% in the sixth) and pratants (from 28% to 35%) begin to dominate. In the trophomorphic structure of the living ground cover on the lands not covered by forest, there is a significant decrease of mesotrophic species between 1–2 and 3–5 years. A significant decrease in oligotrophs (from 6% to 0%) and mesomegatrophs (from 3% to 0%) is also observed. No significant difference in the change of megatrophic species was found. According to the hygromorphic structure, mesophytic vegetation (46%-58%) is dominant in all studied areas. The greatest floristic similarity of grass cover is characterized by 2-3-year crops with 45% similarity of species composition, 4-5-year crops (46%) and 5-6-year crops (46%). The same types of grass vegetation grow on these Фlogs, acting as indicators of ecological conditions in the forest phytocenosis.

Water and Sediment Quality Changes in Mangrove Systems with Shrimp Farms in the Northern Ecuadorean Coast

The environmental quality of mangroves is influenced by multiple factors, among which shrimp aquaculture currently plays a major role. This study describes the alterations of natural conditions of mangrove systems that house shrimp farms in the northern Ecuadorean coast. Water, sediment quality and the structure of benthic assemblages of four sectors with different proportions of mangroves and shrimp ponds are described. The samples were collected at the confluence of mangrove drainages or tidal creeks, as well as in the modified drainages for shrimp farm infrastructures towards navigable channels, during the dry and rainy seasons. Shrimp farm drainage water had a 17% higher dissolved oxygen concentration and 2.5 times higher total ammonium and phosphorus compared to mangrove drainage water. The sediment in the latter decreased their total organic matter and nitrogen content by 44% and 53%, respectively, slightly increasing the pH level and increasing the ammonium content by 93%. Furthermore, the redox profiles were different between the types of drainages. The soft-bottom benthic assemblages involved 56 species in the study area and exhibited a variety of sectoral structures, with better indicators of ecological status in sectors with fewer shrimp farms. Finally, improvements are suggested for monitoring the environmental quality of shrimp farms in Ecuadorean mangrove systems.

Hidden diversity: DNA metabarcoding reveals hyper-diverse benthic invertebrate communities

BackgroundFreshwater ecosystems, such as streams, are facing increasing pressures from agricultural land use and recent literature stresses the importance of robust biomonitoring to detect trends in insect decline globally. Aquatic insects and other macroinvertebrates are often used as indicators of ecological condition in freshwater biomonitoring programs; however, these diverse groups can present challenges to morphological identification and coarse-level taxonomic resolution can mask patterns in community composition. Here, we incorporate molecular identification (DNA metabarcoding) into a stream biomonitoring sampling design to explore the diversity and variability of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities at small spatial scales. While individual stream reaches can be very heterogenous, most community ecology studies focus on larger, landscape-level patterns of community composition. A high degree of community variability at the local scale has important implications for both biomonitoring and ecological research, and the incorporation of DNA metabarcoding into local biodiversity assessments will inform future sampling protocols.ResultsWe sampled twenty streams in southern Ontario, Canada, for aquatic macroinvertebrates across multiple time points and assessed local community variability by comparing field replicates taken ten meters apart within the same stream. Using bulk-tissue DNA metabarcoding, we revealed that aquatic macroinvertebrate communities are highly diverse at small spatial scales with unprecedented levels of local taxonomic turnover. We detected over 1600 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) from 149 families, and a single insect family, the Chironomidae, contained over one third of the total number of OTUs detected in our study. Benthic communities were largely comprised of rare taxa detected only once per stream despite multiple biological replicates (24–94% rare taxa per site). In addition to numerous rare taxa, our species pool estimates indicated that there was a large proportion of taxa that remained undetected by our sampling regime (14–94% per site). Our sites were located across a gradient of agricultural activity, and while we predicted that increased land use would homogenize benthic communities, this was not supported as within-stream dissimilarity was unrelated to land use. Within-stream dissimilarity estimates were consistently high for all levels of taxonomic resolution (invertebrate families, invertebrate OTUs, chironomid OTUs), indicating stream communities are very dissimilar at small spatial scales.

An approach for assessing and ranking fisheries management scenarios in spatially delimited marine areas

Abstract Spatial restrictions to human activities such as bottom trawling are increasingly used to improve the ecological condition of disturbed habitats. Such management interventions typically have socio-economic consequences, which creates a challenge for those making decisions about which activities should be restricted and where restrictions should apply. We present an approach for predicting the effects of fisheries management scenarios in spatially delimited marine areas and ranking them—using a loss function—according to how well they achieve desired outcomes across a set of ecological and socio-economic indicators. This approach is demonstrated by simulating alternative fishing gear restrictions and zoning options within a hypothetical marine protected area (MPA). Relative benthic status (RBS; an indicator of ecological condition) and relative catch value (RCV; an indicator of potential economic cost) were estimated for the baseline environment and 21 potential management scenarios. The rank order depended on which indicator was prioritized (i.e. whether RBS or RCV was given greater weighting in the loss function), with the top-ranked scenarios in each case involving considerably different management measures. The methods presented can be applied anywhere using locally or strategically relevant indicators to help identify spatial fisheries management measures that minimize ecological and socio-economic trade-offs.

Diatomological mapping of water bodies of Delhi region for forensic consideration

Diatoms are photosynthetic algae; having a siliceous cell wall known as ‘frustule’. They are abundantly found in every aquatic and terrestrial environment including both fresh and marine water. They are cosmopolitan in nature as these microalgal species are also capable of growing on moist substrates like soil and bark of a plant. The growth of diatoms is very specific to the environmental conditions of a place due to which they are regarded as principal indicators of ecological status of the ecosystem. In forensics also, they play a crucial role in determining the mode and manner of death in cases of drowning. These small entities act as supportive evidence to detect the type of drowning; whether the death of a victim was due to antemortem or postmortem drowning. The diatomological mapping (D-mapping) of water bodies is an essential feature to generate a systematic record of diatom diversity present at a particular site of an aquatic body. The aim of our study is to conduct D-mapping of several regions of Delhi in order to generate a systematic record of diatoms present therein. The results of our study showed about 20 diatom species, some of them were commonly present at all sites, whereas few among them were site specific. The diatom database generated from D-mapping of water bodies can be used as a reference by the forensic pathologists while solving drowning cases, if any, from these aquatic bodies.

Small Hydropower Plants’ Impacts on the Ecological Status Indicators of Urban Rivers

Water is the basis of life for living creatures and is used for various purposes, especially in agriculture, industry, municipal services, and energy production. Assessing water quality in terms of its various uses is not without significance. This study investigates the water quality within two small hydropower plants (SHPs) in central European urban areas from an environmental perspective. Wrocław I and Wrocław II SHPs on the Odra River in Poland were selected as case studies. This study presents the results of four-year observations (2017–2020) conducted in different locations located upstream and downstream of the barriers. The following aspects were assessed: physicochemical status, trophic status, assessment of fish living conditions, and water quality indices. The results show that SHPs improved the average physicochemical status of the five-day biochemical oxygen demand (i.e., BOD5; by 6.19% comparing the results downstream and upstream of the SHPs), dissolved oxygen (3.85%), PO4-P (3.31%), and electrical conductivity (0.52%); however, they worsened in the case of the pH (by 2.63%) and NO3-N (by 1.83%). Water near the study cases is classified as mesotrophic or eutrophic. The conditions for salmonids and cyprinids were not met due to the increased concentrations of NO2 and BOD5 values; in the case of salmonids, also due to the temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration. The water quality indices differed and indicated the quality from poor to good, depending on the classification. This study provides important insights for policymakers regarding the awareness of the impacts of SHPs on water quality in urban areas and the immediate measure needed to be considered to improve aquatic habitat conditions.

Preliminary biological data of Sahel wetland ecosystems in Burkina Faso: Implications for ecological health assessment

Birds, amphibians, fish, and macroinvertebrates are useful indicators of ecological conditions and ensure considerable conservation value and tools for decision making in management of wetland ecosystems. However, the use of these organisms to monitor wetland ecosystems has rarely been explored in Western Africa. Whereas, we are currently facing to growing multiple anthropogenic pressures and climate warming that impact negatively our wetlands and the biodiversity. Notably, there is an urgent need of cost-effective tools for wetland ecosystems health assessment in Burkina Faso. In this study, we examined the taxonomic composition of birds, amphibians, fish, and macroinvertebrates and explored their potential use for monitoring wetland ecosystems. From our findings, measures of taxa composition and diversity respond to the gradients of anthropogenic alterations. Our results revealed that the highest diversity of fish and macroinvertebrates taxa was recorded in protected sites, whereas the lowest diversity was obtained in degraded sites. Additionally, the findings showed a strong and positive correlation between macroinvertebrates taxa and key water variables, whereas fish taxa were strongly correlated to xylal (deadwood) substrates. Most of bird’s species were recorded in tree-shrubs, and amphibians of protected wetlands were distinguished by identifying indicator taxa through indicator value index. African wetland ecosystems and biodiversity may be sustainably preserved through responsive monitoring programs of wetlands by limnologists.

Multidimensional Measurement and Enhancement Strategies of the Provincial Ecological Niche in the Yellow River Basin

Provincial economic development in the VUCA era (V: volatility; U: uncertainty; C: complexity; A: ambiguity) is facing great challenges. Comprehensively measuring the provincial ecological niche and giving enhancement strategies are significant for the implementation of the Yellow River Strategy. By constructing the S–R–F (Status–Relationship–Function) provincial ecological niche measurement framework using the SEM model (the structural equation modeling), this paper calculated the provincial ecological niche of the Yellow River Basin from 2005 to 2019 using an ecological niche width model, an ecological niche overlap model and an ecological niche suitability model and gave improvement strategies through spatial positioning. Results: (1) The ecological niche breadth in the Yellow River Basin is uneven, showing a spatial pattern of “low in the upper reaches, high in the lower reaches”. The ecological niche overlap changes from synchronous competition to hierarchical differentiation. The ecological niche suitability shows a transformation of “overall homogeneity but local variation”. (2) Qinghai and Gansu belong to subspace I of ecological niches; the strategies of ecological niche specialization, potential ecological niche and ecological niche synergy are appropriate. Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia belong to subspace III; the strategies of ecological niche specialization, ecological niche separation, potential ecological niche and ecological niche synergy are suitable. Shandong belongs to subspace VI; the strategies of ecological niche generalization and ecological niche synergy are fitting. Henan, Sichuan and Shaanxi belong to subspace VIII; it is advisable to choose ecological niche generalization, ecological niche separation and ecological niche synergy strategies. The possible marginal contributions of this paper are: (1) applying the idea of fitting optimization to guide the construction of a provincial ecological status indicator system, applying the validation analysis in the SEM model to test the suitability and validity of a provincial ecological status indicator system and improving the scientificity and objectivity of the indicator system construction. (2) Correlating the measurement model with the connotation (state–relationship–function) of the provincial ecological niche, the perspective of ecological niche research and improving the theoretical support for the construction of a multidimensional measurement model. (3) Spatial positioning of provincial ecological niches to improve the relevance and effectiveness of strategies.

Response of Chironomids to Key Environmental Factors: Perspective for Biomonitoring.

Simple SummaryBenthic macroinvertebrates of inland waters, including running waters and lakes, are frequently used in biomonitoring. Sometimes, environmental data associated with species lists are not available; in this situation traits or functional adaptations of species to environment can be considered as a tool to translate the list of species into a useful index to evaluate the environmental quality a body of water.Chironomids are the species-richest family among macroinvertebrates and are often used as indicators of ecological conditions in inland waters. High taxonomic expertise is needed for identification and new species are still being described even in the well-known West Palearctic region. Our Microsoft Access relational database comprises data on Chironomid species collected in rivers and lakes in Italy and some other European countries over a period of about 50 years, often associated with physical-chemical data, but in some cases, only data on Chironomids are available with no associated environmental data. The aim of the present paper was to propose the calculation of ecological traits of Chironomid species as a tool to derive information on water quality, when only data on Chironomid species composition are present, while environmental data are lacking. Traits summarizing the species’ response to environmental variables were evaluated, with emphasis on natural and man-influenced factors: current velocity, water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients. Traits calculations were carried out in the R environment using a subset of our data, including both environmental data and Chironomid abundances. The relations between sites, Chironomid, species and traits were evaluated using correspondence analysis and other multivariate methods. The response of species showed an interaction among different factors, with the possibility of ordering species along a single environmental gradient, extending from cold running waters to warm standing waters, with few exceptions.

Ecosystem services’ capacity and flow in the Venice Lagoon and the relationship with ecological status

Ecosystem services (ES) are theoretically linked to healthy ecological conditions, but this relationship seems to be rather challenging to demonstrate in the real world. Therefore, shedding light on these aspects can be crucial for implementing effective ecosystem management strategies, for instance within the context of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation. This work aims to present a spatially-explicit assessment of the ecological potential (capacity) and actual use (flow) of 12 ES in the Venice lagoon and to explore the relationships with the ecological status. Quantitative indicators of capacity and flow for each ES have been assessed and mapped and the results summarised with a set of aggregated indicators. The outcomes reveal a positive relationship between the overall capacity and flow of ES, suggesting that where the first is degraded, an overall loss of ES delivery occurs. A complex picture emerges when exploring the links with the ecological conditions, as the relationship changes with the ES and ecological status indicators considered. Structural indicators of ecological status, such as the Biological Quality Elements adopted by the WFD (assessed by MAQI and M-AMBI metrics), seem to be weakly linked with ES, while functional indicators (Kempton Q-90 diversity and secondary production) showed stronger links, especially when aggregated ES indicators are considered. Concerning different ES, it appears that the flow of the ES that are mediated by human uses (provisioning and cultural ES) is negatively related with some of the ecological status indicators. Finally, our results suggest possible limitations of the zonation adopted under the WFD, when it comes to the analysis of ES. We argue that ES could play a role in the management of the Lagoon ecosystem, as their analysis could be used to preserve the ecological functioning by managing the ‘uses’ we make of the ecosystem.

The impact of recreational use and access on biotic and abiotic disturbances on areas protected by local communities and a state conservation agency

Local communities often conserve nearby natural areas to support recreational activities and other benefits these areas provide. Areas protected by local communities could contribute to wider efforts to achieve large-scale conservation goals, such as biodiversity protection, provided the ecological conditions on-site are compatible with achieving these goals. To explore the potential contribution of locally established protected areas, we focus on areas protected by local communities in California, USA, using ballot initiatives, a form of direct democracy. We compare the ecological condition of wooded habitat on protected areas funded by local communities through the ballot box to that of similar habitats on protected areas funded by a state conservation agency. As an indicator of ecological condition, we focus on coverage by exotic plant species. We examine whether protected area characteristics or aspects of human-mediated onsite disturbance related to recreational use explain exotic plant cover found on each type of protected area. Exotic plant cover did not differ between areas protected by local communities and those protected by our larger scale conservation actor. Instead, elevation was the best predictor of exotic plant cover. Our results suggest protected areas established by local communities may be in no worse a condition than those established by a state public agency and warrant inclusion when tracking progress towards large-scale conservation goals for protected areas.

Alkalinity and diatom assemblages in lowland streams: How to separate alkalinity from inorganic phosphorus in ecological assessments?

Benthic algae are widely used as ecological indicators of the ecological status of streams because they are widely distributed, they show high species diversity and they respond rapidly to human pressures in particular eutrophication and organic pollution. Recent findings have highlighted that in addition to human pressures, alkalinity may also play a role for community composition as bicarbonate becomes an increasingly important carbon source for photosynthesis when alkalinity increases. With this study, we aimed to elucidate how alkalinity influences the distribution of diatoms in Danish lowland streams, and to explore ifdiatom assemblage patterns can be affected by alkalinity in a way that interferes with the ecological assessment using diatom-based indices. We found that alkalinity affect the benthic algae community in lowland streams and that different species of diatoms were associated with different levels of alkalinity, a finding that might indicate dissimilarities in the efficiency of their HCO3− use. Nitzschia intermedia, Synedra acus, Nitzschia recta, Diatoma tenue, and Nitzschia linearis were associated with high alkalinity, whereas Synedra rumpens, Fragilaria vaucheriae, Psammothidium bioretii, and Gomphonema parvulum were associated with low alkalinity in streams with very low levels of phosphate. We also found that the Danish indicator for ecological status in streams (a combination of two Austrian indices, the Saprobic Index (SID) and the Trophic Index (TID) may exceed levels acceptable for good ecological status in moderate to high alkaline streams despite low phosphate levels. These findings highlight the need for the development of a diagnostic method to disentangle the effects of alkalinity from eutrophication and, additionally, that we need more insight into the autecology of species to interpret ecological assessments to be able to guide management efforts.

Landform-vegetation units in karstic depressions (dolines) evaluated by indicator plant species and Ellenberg indicator values

In this study, the objects of research were circular and concave karstic depressions, called sinkholes or dolines. All these negative topographic anomalies were previously recognized as safe havens for cool-adapted species on karstic plateaus. However, the high geodiversity of doline landforms on karst plateaus does not ensure that all dolines are really safe havens that should be considered for conservation status. We propose the use of indicator species to identify different dolines' “sections” and their overall types to identify dolines with high conservation value for cool-adapted species. We aimed to divide dolines into landform-vegetation units (LVU) according to basic geomorphic characteristics and indicator plant species. We carried out intensive sampling of vegetation plots (n = 286) across 10 dolines of different geomorphology ranging from 20 m to 100 m in diameter and from 2 m to 20 m in depth. Each doline was classified into a maximum of four LVUs: bottom, lower slope, upper slope and top. Vascular plants were used as a proxy for ecosystem biodiversity and indicator of ecological conditions. The diversity of vascular plant communities was sampled along N–S transects from one side of the doline over the bottom to the other side. Geodiversity parameters of individual dolines were calculated using a high-resolution digital elevation model (LiDAR / Light Detection And Ranging) and their significance was established by permutation test in CCA (Canonical Correlation Analysis). The floristic gradient was established by the first axis of PCoA (Principal Coordinates Analysis) and shows the species turn-over along the trajectory. Discrete plant communities were determined by TWINSPAN (Two-Way Indicator Species ANnalysis) classification. Based on this analysis, transects were disintegrated into four LVUs. Communities within LVUs were compared by Ellenberg indicator values and according to habitat preference of species. The indicator (also termed diagnostic) plant species were calculated by fidelity measure and related to ecological conditions along transects. We found that all four LVUs appear only in dolines that are at least 13.5 m deep and those can serve as a good safe haven for cool-adapted species in foreseen climatic change. We also confirmed that doline depth is the most important factors influencing the plant community composition. The results can be directly transformed to other karst regions (karst plateaus) with the same zonal vegetation, but calibration is needed in case of their application in other areas.

Water Birds as Indicators of Ecological Conditions in a Ramsar Wetland (Sebkhet Bazer, East of Algeria)

Background: Wetlands are the highly complex ecosystems due to various interactions between the components, where, the most iconic of ecological changes are the water birds. The current study was aimed to examine the interactions between the water birds diversity, abundance and the abiotic factors in Sebkhet Bazer. Methods: The investigation was conducted between March 2013 and December 2014 in Sebkhet Bazer (Sétif, Algeria, 36°05'N and 5°45'E), by monitoring water birds abundance (grouped into 4: Anatidae, Rallidae, Phoenicopteridae and Shorebirds) and measuring the physico-chemical water parameters (depth, temperature, pH, salinity and vegetation cover). All statistical analysis was performed using the InfoStat software (2017), it was carried out in two steps, by testing of fixed linear models; first of the seasonal differences in water body variables and second of the seasonal differences in bird abundance for the 4 water bird groups. Result: The results showed that the physico-chemical parameters of water varied considerably from season to season. The four groups of birds reached their lowest abundance in summer, with Rallidae and Phonicopteridae being more abundant in spring, Anatidae in winter and Shorebirds in autumn, suggesting that this variation is attributed to changes in water body characteristics between the four seasons. Therefore, the abundance of the different water bird group could be used as an ecological indicator of this wetland’s characteristics. If these features are altered by climate change, the water bird community would be also affected.

Multi-method biodiversity assessments from wetlands in Grand Teton National Park

A cost-efficient approach to long-term monitoring is to focus on one species or group of organisms as indicators of ecological condition. Through the use of autonomous monitoring technologies, monitoring programs can efficiently expand the biological community surveyed and inferences made. Amphibians have been monitored in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks by the Greater Yellowstone Inventory and Monitoring Network (GRYN) since 2006, yet other taxa dependent on wetlands have not been systematically studied. Our main aim was to explore what additional insights we could gain about wetland biodiversity by combining GRYN’s amphibian surveys with multiple autonomous technologies. We deployed wildlife cameras and acoustic recorders (for audible and ultrasonic sounds) at 4 permanent wetlands in Grand Teton National Park, WY during early and late summer 2017 and used descriptive metrics to summarize our findings. During GRYN’s surveys, 3 of 4 native amphibians were detected. With autonomous monitoring tools, we also documented avian and mammalian communities and detected changes in the degree of activity over the summer. Combining multiple, complementary technologies with field-based surveys provides a more comprehensive picture of wetland biodiversity and enhances insights about ecological condition and change.

The Features of Taxonomic Structure Formation of Soil Microbial Biome in Beta vulgaris Rhizosphere

The necessity to increase the production of quality agricultural products in order to minimize using of agrochemicals while maintaining high profitability of production are required a comprehensive study of the determining factor of soil fertility – its biological component. Research of the microbiocenoses formation in the plants rhizosphere at all ontogenesis stages will allow to uncover the mechanisms of microbial-plant interaction and develop effective ways to increase crop productivity with high functional activity and homeostasis of the soil microbiome. The goal is to study the structure of the microbial complex and biodiversity of Beta vulgaris rhizosphere during ontogenesis by classical microbiological and molecular-biological methods. Methods. The number of microorganisms was determined by the method of inoculation soil microbial suspension on agar nutrient media, the structure of the qualitative composition of microorganisms was identified by morphologically-cultural properties, the morphology of isolated isolates – by microscopy of fixed preparations. The diversity of soil microbial complexes was evaluated by the Shannon, Simpson, and Berger-Parker ecological indices. The taxonomic structure of prokaryotes was determined by pyrosequencing. Results. The differentiation of the soil microbiota number was observed during the Beta vulgaris ontogenesis due to the intensity production of root exudates by the plant. The number of bacteria and micromycetes are increased 1.8–2.3 times, however, in the phase of leaves closing in-row spacing, the number of fungal microbiota decreased by 46.4%. Microbial complexes were differed in the number of detected morphotypes (27–50) and in the structure of the distribution of dominant forms (the total number of dominant forms of bacteria was decreased during the growing season, micromycetes – was increased). Analysis of the prokaryotes metagenome by pyrosequencing made it possible to identify 214 operational taxonomic units, 10.1% of which are forms that are not cultivated on nutrient media, 23.3% are unclassified. Among the identified taxonomic units, 96.2% were identified at the order level, 85.7% – at the family level, 76.7% – at the genus level. Among the identified taxonomic units were 15 phyla bacteria and 1 – archaea, among which 96 taxonomic units, families – 167, genera – 214 we found at the level of microbial orders. The dominant forms among the identified phyla were Proteobacteria (65.7%) and Actinobacteria (20.5%); orders – Burkholderiales (38.7%) and Pseudomonadales (20.1%); families – Alcaligenacea (37.9%), Pseudomonadaceae (20.1 %); Gaiellaceae (5.7%), Nitrososphaeraceae (4.2%); genera – Achromobacter (31.5%) and Pseudomonas (19.9%). The soil microbial complex was characterized by high biodiversity according to the indicators According to the indicators of ecological indices, determined on the basis of the results of classical microbiological and molecular biological research methods, it is established that the microbial complex of the soil was characterized by high biodiversity. Although the Shannon (ISh=5.36) and Simpson (IS=0.87) indexes, based on the pyrosequencing method results, were significantly higher than similar indicators identified by classical microbiological methods. Conclusions. During the ontogenesis of Beta Vulgaris, including due to the intensity of plant production of root exudates, the number of bacteria and micromycetes in the rhizosphere of plants increased. It was accompanied by a redistribution of structural composition and an increase of the microorganisms’ diversity (ISh=5.36). It found that among the identified 214 taxonomic units, 10.1% – forms that are not cultivated on nutrient media, 23.3% – are unclassified. Our studies showed that the structure of the microbial complex of the plants’ rhizosphere reflects the characteristics of the soil and can be used as an indicator of ecological status. The obtained results (conducted for the first time in the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine) deepen the knowledge about the true scale of natural genetic diversity of microbial complexes and are a valuable asset for substantiating practical proposals for effective adaptive interactions in the plant-microorganism system to preserve the homeostasis agroecosystems.

Determining the Ecological Status of Benthic Coastal Communities: A Case in an Anthropized Sub-Arctic Area

With the widespread influence of human activities on marine ecosystems, evaluation of ecological status provides valuable information for conservation initiatives and sustainable development. To this end, many environmental indicators have been developed worldwide and there is a growing need to evaluate their performance by calculating ecological status in a wide range of ecosystems at multiple spatial and temporal scales. This study calculated and contrasted sixteen indicators of ecological status from three methodological categories: abundance measures, diversity parameters and characteristic species. This selection was applied to coastal benthic ecosystems at Sept-Îles (Québec, Canada), an important industrial harbor area in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and related to habitat parameters (organic matter, grain size fractions, and heavy metal concentrations). Nearly all indicators highlighted a generally good ecological status in the study area, where communities presented an unperturbed profile with high taxa and functional diversities and without the dominance of opportunistic taxa. Some correlations with habitat parameters were detected, especially with heavy metals, and bootstrap analyses indicated quite robust results. This study provides valuable information on the application of environmental indicators in Canadian coastal ecosystems, along with insights on their use for environmental assessments.
