STUDY OF RISK MANAGEMENT IN BANKING SECTOR

When it comes to the change of an economy, the function that financial institutions of a country perform is absolutely essential. The financial performance of a bank over the course of its history, as well as its capacity to manage risks such as market risk, credit risk, and liquidity risk, can be used to evaluate the progress that banking institutions have made. In the 1980s, the United States of America first implemented a supervisory framework model known as "CAMEL" in order to ascertain the overall state of the bank. It is possible for the model to serve as an efficient instrument for guidance and management, as it is able to forecast future risks that may have an impact on a bank. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of three "public sector banks" and three "private sector banks" in India using the CAMEL methodology for a period of two years, specifically 2022 and 2023. A bank's financial strength is determined using the CAMEL model, which rates the banks from best to worst based on characteristics such as "capital adequacy, asset quality, management efficiency, earning, and liquidity." characteristics such as these are used to determine the strength of a bank. According to the findings of the study, the State Bank of India, the Central Bank of India, and the IDBI bank are the three banks that perform the best in terms of the CAMEL parameters among public sector banks. Similarly, according to the CAMEL composite index rating, the private sector banks in India that hold the top ranks are ICICI bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and HDFC bank. The banking sectors performance is crucial for any economy as it reflects the countrys financial health. Banks play a crucial role in mobilising funds from various sectors of the economy, including both priority and non-priority sectors, to finance diverse economic activities.For many years, the banking industry has faced significant challenges due to unrecovered loans.The presence of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) has significantly hindered the development and growth of the economy.This study delves into the impact of NPAs on the profitability performance of selected public and private sector banks in India from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Analysing key ratios like Gross NPA, Net NPA, and Return on Assets (ROA), sheds light on the relationship between NPAs and bank performance. The findings highlight higher NPA levels in public sector banks, adversely affecting their profitability. Moreover, a significant correlation between NPAs and profitability underscores the imperative of effective NPA management for enhancing bank profitability. These insights are crucial for bank management, policymakers, and regulators to devise strategies for mitigating NPAs and fortifying the banking sector.

This comparative study analyzed the impact of loan portfolio composition on the efficiency of different types of banks in India—public sector, old private, and new private banks—in the period between 2013 and 2022. Efficiency was evaluated using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The study considered four loan variables—term lending, working capital, priority sector lending, and secured lending in proportion to the overall loans—as independent factors against the efficiency score as the dependent variable, using a random-effects generalized least squares (GLS) regression framework. The results indicate that there were no significant effects on the efficiency of old private banks, except for working capital, which had a marginally negative impact on bank efficiency. Working capital, priority sector lending, and term lending have been found to significantly impact the efficiency of new private banks. Only term and working capital loans significantly affected the efficiency of public sector banks.

The present research is an attempt to study the mental well-being of sales managers in private-sector banks in India. The researcher has tried to measure the perceived psychological safety and how it impacts the mental wellness of bank managers. The instrument used to study the psychologically safe environment was PSC-12 and WESWBM is used to measure mental well-being. The data has been analyzed using SPSS. The data was collected through an online survey. This research focuses on both, qualitative and quantitative analysis. The findings validate the correlation between the two factors of study and statistically significant validation has been established.

Purpose: This study examined the impact of stress on the well-being and performance at work of the individuals employed at Indian public and private sector banks in the selected districts of Haryana and explored whether the effects of stress between these two sectors are significant.Design/methodology/approach: Data were gathered from 300 bank employees, with 150 each from selected public and private sector banks. A pre-validated structured questionnaire using a Likert scale was employed to measure stress-related health issues and job performance. Statistical analysis of data was done using descriptive statistics and to ensure the validity of the study’s findings, an independent sample t-test was employed.Findings: The research reveals that employees in both sectors experience stress-related health issues, including headaches, back pain, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. However, employees in public sector banks reported higher levels of back pain, fatigue and anxiety in comparison to those in private sector banks. While the impact on job performance on all the employees is reduced job satisfaction, decreased productivity and increased absenteeism. Notably, employees in public sector banks reported a higher likelihood of decreased productivity and premature retirement plans due to stress.Practical implications: Elevated levels of stress have the potential to exert adverse consequences on the productivity and performance of employees. By acknowledging stress as a plausible determinant affecting performance, banks can prioritize the establishment of a work environment that fosters productivity and efficiency, potentially resulting in enhanced employees’ performance.Originality/value: The research conducted is original and based on empirical data and contributes to the understanding of how stress affects bank employees in a specific regional context, shedding light on differences between public and private sector banks.

Comparative Analysis of Priority Sector Credit to Weaker Sections: A Comprehensive Study of Public and Private Sector Banks in India

This comprehensive study conducts a comparative analysis of priority sector credit to weaker sections, focusing on both public and private sector banks in India. The research delves into the historical context, policy framework, and literature reviews related to priority sector lending. The study is divided into two phases (2013-2017 and 2018-2022) and employs a robust research methodology, including compounded annual growth rate (CAGR), mean value analysis, and a test of hypothesis for mean values. The results reveal a discernible increase in advances made by both public and private sector banks to weaker sections, reflecting a commitment to inclusive growth. Public sector banks exhibit a higher CAGR during both study phases and consistently meet prescribed targets. Private sector banks show impressive growth rates, overcoming challenges in meeting targets. Hypothesis testing confirms significant differences in mean values between public and private sector banks, emphasizing their distinct approaches. Detailed bank-wise analyses for both sectors provide insights into their contributions, growth rates, and compliance with targets. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and regulators to refine and monitor priority sector lending policies. Collaboration and knowledge sharing initiatives are suggested for private sector banks to enhance their performance. Overall, the study underscores the importance of sustained efforts by both sectors in aligning lending practices with priority sector goals for inclusive economic growth in India.

Perception of Employees on High-Performance Human Resource Practices (HPHRP) in Indian Banks: A Comparison

The aim of this article is to study the difference between public and private sector banks in terms of high-performance human resource practices (HPHRP). This empirical research paper is based on a detailed analysis of the literature research, which has been conducted on 500 managerial staff of public and private sector banks in Rajasthan through a structured questionnaire. Results reveal that there is a significant difference in the HPHRP of public and private sector banks in Rajasthan with reference to practices like internal mobility, selective staffing, result-oriented appraisal, employment security and incentive rewards. The practices, namely, extensive training, clear job description, and participation and teamwork, were found to be less significant in the study. The HPHRP scale and the differences in high-performance work systems (HPWSs) between public and private sector banks were investigated in the Indian context from a theoretical standpoint. For bank professionals, this study will help in improving their HPWSs. The study is unique as it seeks to identify the role of HPHRP in both public and private sector banks in India and concentrates on a bundle of human resource practices that will significantly improve the industry’s performance outcomes.

The impact of Credit Suisse takeover on Indian banking and financial services sector stocks: an event study analysis

PurposeThe present study aims to comprehensively examine the impact of the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) takeover of Credit Suisse on the banking and financial services sector in the Indian stock market. To fully comprehend the impact of the event, the study separately investigates the response of private sector banks, public sector banks, overall banking companies and financial services companies to the takeover of the second-largest financial institution in Switzerland.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs event study methodology, using the market model, to analyze the event's impact on Indian banking and financial services sector stocks. The data consists of daily closing prices of companies included in the Nifty Private Bank Index, Nifty PSU Bank Index, Nifty Bank Index and Nifty Financial Services Index from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Furthermore, cross-sectional regression analysis has been conducted to explore the factors that drive abnormal returns.FindingsThe empirical findings of the study suggest the event had a heterogeneous impact on the stock prices of Indian banks and financial services companies. While public sector banks experienced a significant negative impact on select days within the event window, the overall Indian banking sector and financial services companies also witnessed notable declines. In contrast, Indian private sector banks were relatively resilient, exhibiting minimal effects. However, the cumulative effect is found to be insignificant for all four categories across different event windows. The study also observed that the cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) were significantly influenced by certain variables during different event windows.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, the present study is the earliest attempt that investigates the impact of the UBS takeover of Credit Suisse on the Indian banking and financial services sector using event study methodology and cross-sectional regression model.

The services your bank provides to its business clients—known as liquidity management—enable them to take advantage of the interest on their checking and current accounts and pool money from several accounts. As a result, your corporate clients may effectively manage the daily liquidity of their companies. The paper compares and contrasts the liquidity management strategies of a few Indian banks from the public and private sectors. Five public sector banks—Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, and State Bank India—and five private sector banks—ICICI, HDFC, AXIS, IDBI, and Kotak Mahindra Bank—have been taken for consideration during the 5-year period between 2018–19 and 2022– 2023. Purpose: The study examines the financial performances of selected Public Sector Undertaking Banks (PSUB) and Private Sector Banks (PSB). Furthermore, this study examines banks' efficiency concerning various financial aspects such as stability, liquidity, and profitability and their impact on financial performance. Theoretical framework: Numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the financial performance of commercial banks. But after the COVID pandemic, only a few studies were conducted on the performance of banks. However, there is still much to assess regarding the comparative financial performance of public and private sector banks in India. Design/methodology/approach: The study of financial performance of banks conducted on six PSUB and six PSB are selected based on advances as a percentage of deposits with the top three and bottom three banks from the PSUB and PSB. This research compares PSUB to PSB using a T-test for independent samples. The data is collected from secondary sources gathered from annual and RBI annual reports from 2017 to 2021. Findings: Results from a comparison test show that, even though PSUB has made a lot of progress, they are still not performing up to the standard that PSB set. According to the report, PSB outperformed PSUB in the areas of CAR, NPA to NA, PPE, ROA, and liquid assets to total deposits concerning the CAMEL approach. Research, Practical &amp; Social implications: Future studies can consider other indicators of CAMEL components, like the percentage of gross NPA, net profit margin, interest income to total funds, operating expenses to total funds, credit deposit ratio, cash to deposit ratio, and some other samples of banks, to assess the financial performance of banks. Originality/value: This research focuses on the financial performances of selected PSUBs and PSBs. The findings of this scholarly article state that the performances of the PSBs are the best, which means the PSUBs are lacking towards the customers in their performances. This research may be helpful to the policymakers in the PSUBs to identify their problems and rectify them.
