Sustainability and the ever-changing customer demands are the key drivers for innovation across product, process, system, and supply chain management. Sustainability innovations aim to improve organizational environmental, social, and economic performance. Given the complexity of sustainability and ever-changing business and stakeholders’ requirements, organizations must focus their innovation in the direction of meeting the requirements of their stakeholders and business. Integrated sustainable green lean six sigma agile manufacturing system (ISGLSAMS) is a sustainable market-focused manufacturing system. It provides a sustainability and market-oriented business model and meets the perspectives of the various stakeholders. This study aims to identify and rank the various performance outcomes of ISGLSAMS. The study also explores the correlations among the various performance outcomes of ISGLSAMS. The study helps the practitioners to better understand the ISGLSAMS and stakeholders’ perspectives of ISGLSAMS. This research provides a foundation for practitioners, policymakers, organizations, and value chain partners (i) to formulate policies and roadmaps for the successful adoption of ISGLSAMS and (ii) for fostering a more sustainable development of manufacturing organizations in India.

From intentions to action: how behavioural intentions shape employee performance through digital learning?

PurposeThis study aims to explore the impact of “Performance Expectancy” (PE) on the performance of Indian automotive manufacturing employees through their “Behavioural Intention” (BI) in the context of digital learning within the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world.Design/methodology/approachA descriptive research design was adopted to gather data from 211 employees of Indian automotive manufacturing companies. Structural equation modelling was applied for data analysis and obtaining results.FindingsLargely, the findings indicate that BI does mediate the relationship between PE and employee performance (EP) in the context of the Indian automotive manufacturing sector. The findings would help in boosting digital learning initiatives, improving EP and fostering organizational success in the VUCA world.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study focused on the Indian manufacturing industry. Extending the research beyond the manufacturing sector to other industries in India could possibly help in generalizing the findings, and thereby enhance knowledge of the broader consequences of digital learning on EP.Practical implicationsDigital learning platforms can enhance sustainable industrialization in the manufacturing sector by providing employees with access to digital learning opportunities. Managers must provide employees with access to digital learning opportunities for making them more creative and innovative, so that they can become real change agents, and can handle real-world problems more efficiently, leading the organization to deal with the complexities and unpredictability in this VUCA world.Originality/valueWithin the ambits of Indian automotive manufacturing organizations, there have been limited research studies that have used two constructs of the UTAUT2 framework to see their impact on EP in terms of digital learning. Thus, based on the limited information available, this research stands as a pioneering effort in the realm of digital learning within the Indian automotive manufacturing industry, where the relationship between PE and EP is examined through the mediational role of BI of employees. Moreover, this research possibly would pave the way for further research studies on exploring the role of potential factors influencing the strength and direction of the relationships between these variables (PE and EP).

Identification and analysis of drivers for carbon regulatory environmental policies implementation in manufacturing supply chain: A zero carbon perspective

Manufacturing supply chains (SCs) has received great attention in both academia and industries to improve ecological sustainability and achieve net-zero emissions. Governments across the globe are adopting various Carbon Regulatory Policies (CRPs) to curb excessive carbon emissions through SCs and promote sustainable development. Especially among the emerging economies, organizations are under immense pressure from consumers and stakeholders for a transitional shift towards zero-carbon society. Therefore, this research develops a multi-stakeholder framework that identifies and evaluates the drivers of CRP adoption and implementation in manufacturing SC to elevate ecological sustainability. At first through an extensive literature review and Delphi method, relevant drivers and sub-drivers are identified, finalized and categorized under economic, environmental, social, technical and organizational categories. Secondly, fuzzy Best Worst Method (f-BWM) is employed to examine relative importance of all the drivers and sub-drivers. Thirdly, Weighted Influence Non-Linear Gauge System (WINGS) method is used to determine their cause-effect relationships. The proposed framework is illustrated through an industrial case study considering multiple manufacturing organizations in India. The results show that availability of initial funding, economic benefits, and legislative support obtained top three positions in the priority list, whereas, skill training of workers attained the least priority. Finally, critical managerial implications are deduced based on the results of relative importance and inter-relationships analysis. The proposed analytical framework can guide managers and policy makers to the identified drivers to foster effective CRP implementation.

Accomplishing sustainable development goals through international management system standards and multinational supply chains

AbstractThe United Nations has set up 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. This research investigates the role of management system standards and multinational supply chains in achieving SDGs and targets, as well as whether these two paths produce varying degrees of effectiveness in achieving these goals. Questionnaire‐based research is conducted among 264 Indian manufacturing organisations based on their certification status and MNE supplier status. Comparison of the surveyed organisations is carried out on three parameters, namely, number of targets for each SDG, fulfilment levels of these targets and extension of established targets further in the supply chain. Analysis of variance and t‐test methods are used to compare survey responses. Results show that the role of management system standards and auditing frameworks used by multinational enterprises is statistically similar in achieving SDGs. The role of management system standards in achieving each of the SDGs has not yet been attempted so far by using the aforementioned factors. The comparison of management system standards' auditing approaches with the auditing frameworks of multinational enterprises also provides a novel addition. Both multinationals and their supplier organisations can save time, money and effort by following either of the two approaches and avoiding the duplicity that is currently prevalent in practice. The research has theoretical implications for sustainability, modernisation and globalisation theories.

A study of the barriers to the adoption of integrated sustainable-green-lean-six sigma-agile manufacturing system (ISGLSAMS) in Indian manufacturing organizations

The scarcity of resources and customers’ demands for the product variety is causing significant research in the sustainable market-based manufacturing system, i.e. integrated sustainable-green-lean-six sigma-agile manufacturing system (ISGLSAMS). Many manufacturing organizations are opting for ISGLSAMS with partial mix or success. The objectives of this study are to analyze the effect of the various ISGLSAMS barriers constructs on the (i) adoption of ISGLSAMS, and (ii) organizational market, operational and sustainable performance in Indian manufacturing organizations. The research methodology includes the (i) design of a survey questionnaire, (ii) data collection, and (iii) analysis of the data. A total of 540 responses were received out of 3607 survey questionnaires mailed. Based on the opinion of four industry experts and two academic experts from the field of operations management ISGLSAMS barriers are grouped into ten formative constructs. The effect of the constructs on the adoption of ISGLSAMS and ISGLSAMS performance is analyzed with SmartPLS 2.0 M3. The result suggests that (i) technological risk and low supplier commitment construct, (ii) uncertainty, misconception, and low customer demand construct, (iii) managerial complexity construct, and (iv) design complexity construct are found prominent barriers in India for the ISGLSAMS. The results also suggest that ISGLSAMS barriers have a significant negative effect on the organizational operational, market, and sustainable performance. This study provides the opportunity for the policymakers and organizations to design and develop policies, and research activities for overcoming the barriers, and successful adoption of ISGLSAMS in India.

MCDM model to rank the performance outcomes in the implementation of Industry 4.0

PurposeIndustry 4.0 has received significant attention in today's competitive business market, necessitating a restructuring of functional domains in nearly every manufacturing organization. A comprehensive strategy to improve performance in preparation for Industry 4.0 implementation necessitates several steps, one of which is the establishment of performance outcomes (POs). The aim of this paper is to identify and rank the POs realized due to the adoption of Industry 4.0 enablers.Design/methodology/approachBased on an extensive literature review and inputs received from experts, a comprehensive list of enablers and the POs was prepared and finalized. This paper proposes a framework based on hybrid solution methodology, namely Neutrosophic Analytical Hierarchy Process (N-AHP) and Neutrosophic Combined Compromise Solution (N-CoCoSo), to rank the POs realized due to the adoption of Industry 4.0 enablers. The N-AHP methodology has been adopted to calculate the relative weights of the Industry 4.0 enablers. In comparison, the N-CoCoSo method has been adopted to rank the POs of Industry 4.0.FindingsThe proposed framework is applied to an Indian manufacturing organization to test the organization's practical applicability. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is also carried out to check the steadiness of the proposed framework. The findings of this study revealed that “Improved responsiveness to market conditions in today's competitive business environment” is the top-ranked PO of Industry 4.0, followed by “Enhanced competitiveness and better market share”, “Better product quality, through smart management of production process” and “Reduction in manufacturing waste and environmental sustainability” which could be realized due to adoption of its enablers.Practical implicationsThis research would aid practitioners by enhancing the practitioners' capacity to understand and prioritize the various POs resulting from implementing Industry 4.0 enablers. Embracing a clear strategic plan will further assist practitioners in improving the efficiency of Industry 4.0 implementation.Originality/valuePrevious literature has only addressed the relationship between Industry 4.0 enablers and POs in a limited way. This paper attempts to compile a comprehensive list of Industry 4.0 enablers relevant to manufacturing organizations in order to fill this knowledge and research gap.

Challenges of implementing industry 4.0 in achieving sustainable development goals: a case of Indian manufacturing organization

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to identify the implementation challenges of Industry 4.0 and circular supply chain during a pandemic in order to achieve sustainable development goals. Based on the literature review and discussion with experts, combined challenges of implementing Industry 4.0 for developing a circular supply chain were identified. A combination of ANP and Fuzzy TOPSIS approaches has been adopted for the proposed research as the network model with dependence and feedback improves rankings derived from the alternatives and can make better decisions for optimal challenges. The ANP approach has been utilized to evaluate the weights of the criteria using Super Decisions software 2.10 version for reliability and accuracy of the results, while Fuzzy TOPSIS approach has been used to prioritize the alternatives. A case example of an XYZ barrel manufacturing organization has been selected for the illustration of the proposed research. Four experts from the manufacturing organization were selected to review the preliminary draft of the questionnaire. The main findings are identifying and prioritizing 5 major challenges and 15 criteria for implementing Industry 4.0 technologies in circular supply chain during the pandemic. The results of the study demonstrate that organizational is the major challenge, while sustainable development challenge is the least prioritized. Data security and privacy, technological development and big data and analytics are the essential criteria for implementing Industry 4.0 and circular supply chain principles. The findings of the research may help academicians, researchers, and industrialists in their decision-making to ensure the smooth implementation of Industry 4.0 and to develop a circular supply chain.

Performance measurement framework of green supply chain implementation in the context of Indian manufacturing organizations

Purpose This research aims to explore the various green supply chain management (GSCM) performance measures and develop the efficient performance measurement framework for evaluation of influence of GSCM adoption on organizational performance.Design/methodology/approach This research proposes a hybrid framework of Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and Pythagorean fuzzy weighted aggregated sum product assessment technique. The usefulness of proposed framework is validated using empirical case example of Indian manufacturing organization.Findings The finding reveals that the overall performance of case organization is 67.03% based on define set of performance measures. Further, the proposed framework has been validated with other three Indian automobile manufacturing organizations. The results obtained were confirmed with selected empirical case company. The proposed hybrid framework provides the effective path to measure and benchmark the impact of each performance measures on system performance.Research limitations/implications This research is limited to automobile sector of India; hence the results obtained in this study may not be comprehensibly used to other sectors due to different product and process fields.Originality/valueThis research aids the industrial practitioners to effectively implement the green supply chain management (GSCM) and helps them to boost the overall performance of business organizations in three dimensions of sustainability.

Build trust in the organization because it matters: exploring the nexus of enablers of organizational trust through DEMATEL

PurposeResearchers have worked diligently to find the factors that foster organizational trust, but the causal relationships between the enablers of organizational trust have remained unexplored. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to map and analyze the causal link structures of organizational trust enablers.Design/methodology/approachData were gathered from employees working in Indian manufacturing organizations. The decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach was used to test the cause-and-effect linkages among organizational trust enablers.FindingsThe empirical evidence shows that 6 out of 14 enablers are causal, namely, organizational justice, person–organization fit, corporate citizenship, positive leadership behavior, relational quality and job satisfaction.Practical implicationsThe findings of the study offer a deeper understanding of identified enablers of organizational trust and their linkages with other outcome enablers. Furthermore, the findings provided in the current study will assist top authorities, practitioners and HR managers in focusing on the select causal organizational trust enablers. In addition, the ranking established in this study will help organizations in directing their efforts and resources toward the few select enablers that help to facilitate other consequent enablers of organizational trust. In other words, the results of the study would help in gaining the advantages of efficiency in fostering trust at work.Originality/valueBy providing the empirically valid causal framework of organizational trust enablers, the present study makes a novel contribution to the field. Also, the findings of this study would help organizational policymakers, HR managers and organizational behavior practitioners in developing a better understanding of inculcating trust at work. Furthermore, the use of these enablers will help to foster a trustworthy environment at work.

Green HRM and employee green behavior in the manufacturing firms: do psychological green climate and employee green commitment matter?

PurposeGreen human resource management (HRM) plays a vital role in improving employees’ green behaviour. A research gap exists in the roles psychological green climate and employee green commitment have in the relationship between green HRM and employees’ green behaviour. Building on social exchange and social identity theories, this study aims to propose a model of the effects of green HRM on employees’ green behaviour through the serial mediation of psychological green climate and employee green commitment.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 297 full-time employees working in various manufacturing organizations in India using cross-sectional research design and self-reported measures. Structural equation modelling was used to examine the model fit of the serial mediation model, and PROCESS macro with a bias-corrected bootstrapping method was used to test the hypotheses.FindingsThe result of the study revealed that green HRM impacts employees’ green behaviour. Further, the findings showed that both psychological green climate and employee green commitment individually mediate the relationship between green HRM and employees’ green behaviour. The key outcome of this research is the partial serial mediation of psychological green climate and employee green commitment in the relationship between green HRM and employees’ green behaviour.Originality/valueThis is one of the primary studies that examined the serial mediating effect of psychological green climate and employee green commitment in the relationship between green HRM and employees’ green behaviour. This study contributes to the existing literature on green HRM and green behaviour by evincing the mediating mechanism of psychological green climate and employee green commitment.

Measuring circularity of a manufacturing organization by using sustainable balanced scorecard.

In recent years, circular economy has become a matter of great importance because of its ability to contribute toward economic, environmental, and social aspects of the sustainability. The circular economy approaches help in resource conservation by reducing, reusing, and recycling products/parts/components/materials. On the other hand, Industry 4.0 is coupled with emerging technologies, which support the firms in efficient resource utilization. These innovative technologies can transform the present manufacturing organizations by reducing resource extraction, CO2 emissions, environmental damage, and power consumption and improve it into a more sustainable manufacturing organization. Industry 4.0 along with circular economy concepts greatly improves the circularity performance. However, there is no framework found for measuring the circularity performance of the firm. Therefore, the current study aims to develop a framework for measuring performance in terms of circularity percentage. In this work, graph theory and matrix approach are employed for measuring the performance based on a sustainable balanced scorecard such as internal process, learning and growth, customer and financial with environmental and social perspectives. A case of an Indian barrel manufacturing organization is discussed for the illustration of proposed methodology. Based on "circularity index" of the organization and the maximum possible circularity index, the circularity was found to be 5.10%. It indicates that there is a huge potential for the improvement in the circularity of the organization. An in-depth sensitivity analysis and comparison are also performed to validate the findings. There are very few studies on measuring the circularity. The study developed the approach for measuring circularity, which may be utilized by industrialists and practitioners for improving the circularity.

A multilevel model for the successful turnaround of declining manufacturing organisations – an investigative study

Indian manufacturing organisations are under constant scrutiny. The entry of global supply chain and manufacturing players made it difficult for Indian manufacturers to establish themselves in the competitive market. This led to the continual decline of firms that were unable to cope with the competition. The decrease in a firm's performance further demoralises owners and stakeholders, thereby forcing them to sell the firm to global players. This study presents a two levelled model that divides the entire working of a manufacturing firm into six impact areas where firms must focus on improving their performance. The model consists of various reasons for an organisation's decline and presents suitable strategies to overcome these reasons. A survey was conducted based on the developments from the model from five manufacturing clusters to compare their stand against leading performers and to suggest areas of improvement with the help of the analytical hierarchy process and the Pugh matrix methodology. The comparison involved a biological method that birds use to differentiate their eggs from a cuckoo's egg. This method can be used for performance measurement and suggestions for performance improvement of any manufacturing firm among the identified clusters.

Factors Effective for Implementation of Lean in Manufacturing Organizations of India

In recent times, more and more organizations have started implementing lean principles for process improvement. It started from Toyota and then followed by organizations across the world. The realization that there is something more too traditional processes has motivated the organizations to follow lean. Lean helps organizations reduce waste, remove non-value-adding activities, and achieve business excellence. Sustainable implementation of lean also helps organizations to incur benefits at a greater extent and longer time. The present study uses factor analysis to ascertain the factors effective for lean implementation in manufacturing companies of India. The survey was done amongst the employees of Indian manufacturing organizations, and analysis was conducted. The study revealed five important factors: Employee Engagement, Management Commitment, Hierarchy, Infrastructural Needs, and Standardization as the success factors in the Indian manufacturing world. Moreover, the study gives various variables that impact these factors. The study proposes to focus more on the five identified factors compared to other factors like supplier involvement, customer involvement, financial capability, participation of experts, which have a low impact on the implementation of lean. The analysis done shows the impacting factors responsible for the effective implementation of lean in manufacturing organizations of India.

Validity and reliability of sustainable supply chain management frameworks in Indian smart manufacturing industries

PurposeSustainable supply chain management (SSCM) ensures integration of socially, environmentally and economically feasible practices in entire supply chain. SSCM principles can be implemented to improve efficiency and productivity of a system by different attributes of the system. The purpose of this article is to identify the most appropriate existing (SSCM) framework that can be implemented suitably in Indian smart manufacturing industries.Design/methodology/approachValidity and reliability analysis on the existing SSCM frameworks was carried out with the help of empirical data collected using questionnaire survey methodology from various Indian smart manufacturing organizations. The empirical data were gathered from various experts from top- and middle-level management in different smart manufacturing organizations across the country. Further, factor analysis was carried on the collected data to estimate the unidimensionality of each SSCM frameworks. Cronbach's alpha value was used to assess reliability of each framework. Subsequently, the frequency distribution analysis was done to obtain familiar elements in the segregated frameworks based on validity and reliability analysis.FindingsThe work observed that only five SSCM frameworks have shown unidimensionality in terms of the elements or constructs. The work further found that these segregated frameworks have not shown sufficiently high level of reliability. Additionally, this work attempted frequency distribution analysis and observed that there were very few elements which were being repeatedly used in numerous frameworks proposed by researchers. Based on the findings of this work, the work concluded that there is acute need of a new SSCM framework for Indian smart manufacturing industries.Research limitations/implicationsThis study gathered empirical data from 388 Indian smart manufacturing organizations. Thus, before generalizing the findings of the study across the sectors, there is a possibility of some more explication.Originality/valueThe main purpose of this article is to explore the feasibility of the existing SSCM frameworks in Indian smart manufacturing sector. The study also assumes that the manufacturing managers and executives may have the complete understanding on the existing sustainable manufacturing frameworks and a chance to executing proper suitable framework in the respective manufacturing organization.

Investigating the sustainable development goals derived due to adoption of circular economy practices

Recently, the novel concept of the circular supply chain (CSC) has gained substantial attention amongst researchers across the globe. It is due to the issues of unsustainability in supply chain operation of manufacturing industry. CSC amalgamates the circular economy (CE) into the supply chain of manufacturing organizations. Business organizations can achieve several sustainable development goals by adopting CSC as an innovative strategy. However, limited attention has been given to its implementation in emerging economies. Thus, this research aim is to identify and analyze the essential CE practices that help to accomplish the several sustainable development goals (SDGs) of CSC management. This research presents an integrated framework of Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (PF-AHP) and Pythagorean fuzzy combinative distance-based assessment (PF-CODAS) techniques. PF-AHP is employed to determine the relative importance of CE practices, whereas PF-CODAS method ranks the SDGs derived due to the adoption of CE practices. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated with the help of an Indian manufacturing organization. The finding of this research reveals that practices based on 'government', 'management', and 'economy' initiatives play a significant role and contribute 50 % of its influence on the effective CSC adoption, whereas, 'mitigate waste and enhance environmental sustainability', is identified as the most critical SDG realized due to adoption of CE practices. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to check the robustness of proposed methods. This research provides the systematic, accurate, and valuable decision support tools to practitioners to execute the CE practices efficiently for achieving the various sustainability goals.

Investigating the role of sustainable manufacturing adoption in improving the organizational performance

Sustainable manufacturing (SM) is one of the growing research fields which aim to replace traditional processes with an inventive approach of combining environmental, social, and economic aspects. The present study is focused on the development of a framework based on the relationships between sustainable manufacturing enablers and organizational performance outcomes. Based on the extensive literature review and experts' inputs, hypotheses were framed, later validated, and modified. A questionnaire was developed, and data collection was done to validate the developed hypotheses. The present case has collected 239 responses from Indian manufacturing organizations through online and offline modes. A structural model was developed to depict the relationships between sustainable manufacturing enablers and organizational performance outcomes by applying Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SPSS AMOS Software. The developed model was validated through three different model fit indices. All the model fit indices were within the acceptable ranges, which represent the compatibility of the developed framework. The present study highlighted that the strategic alignment of organizations towards improving sustainable performance would assist them in maintaining their persistence and market position. The present study is one of its initiative studies to establish and test the relationships among SM enablers and organizational performance outcomes for Indian manufacturing organizations.

An empirical study of green supply chain management practices and environmental performance of Indian manufacturing organisations

Green supply chain management (GSCM) has emerged as a key business practice for organisations to make a balance between their operations and environmental performance. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of GSCM practices on environmental performance of organisation. Six GSCM practices were identified and propositions related to these GSCM practices were put forward. A research model was developed to examine the relationship between different GSCM practices and environmental performance outcomes. Data were collected from 171 respondents who are working as operations and supply chain professionals in manufacturing organisations. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used for analysing data and hypotheses were tested through structural equation modelling (AMOS). The results of the study postulate that internal environmental management practices, management support practices and investment recovery practices have positive impact on environmental performance of organisation.
