Cryptic tolerant fish species and their potential effect on index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores

Indices such as the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) are often used by management agencies to estimate the abstract property of stream health. These indices are usually predicated on the belief that certain fish species are tolerant to environmental perturbation while others are sensitive. Species are usually designated as either tolerant or sensitive in these analyses based on inherent ecological or taxonomic characteristics. However, previous literature has shown that certain species from ecological or taxonomic “sensitive” groups experience increased abundance in degraded streams. We term such species “cryptic tolerants”. Using a stream fish assemblage dataset of 433 unique sample locations across the state of Alabama and the National Landcover Dataset, our objectives were to 1) identify the most common cryptic tolerant species, 2) investigate how cryptic tolerant species might inflate indices of stream health, and 3) compare an alternative measure of stream health in which species are statistically defined rather than defined using the traditional trait-based approach. We identified cryptic tolerants using Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling in six ecoregions. A series of regressions revealed that the proportion of cryptic tolerant species decreased in response to an increasing proportion of forested land in catchments while the proportion of true sensitives increased in all ecoregions except for the Cumberland Plateau. An index that simply used the percentage of statistically defined, non-tolerant species generally had lower p-values and higher r2 values than IBI scores when both were regressed against percentage of forest in catchment. However, both indices had low degrees of correlation with expected disturbance, indicating a univariate index may be inadequate to characterize stream health. Our results highlight a potential issue with applying the IBI to diverse southeastern systems in the United States, which may be alleviated by designating species sensitivity based on empirical response to disturbance rather than taxonomic or ecological characteristics.

Probing river health status: a study based on index of biotic integrity (IBI) in Tapti River of Deccan plateau, India.

Anthropogenic activities impacted the ecological health of rivers by altering the physical habitat and water flow as well as by pollution. Monitoring of biotic groups for gauging the river health is a prerequisite for assessing the extent of degradation and formulating management guidelines for river restoration. An assessment using fish-based index of biotic integrity (IBI) was carried out in the Central Indian river, Tapti, for probing its health status. For the multimetric index, twelvemetrics were adopted under five categories: taxonomic richness, habitat composition, tolerance indicators, species resilience, and trophic composition. Among the studied sites, Betul in the upper stretch was selected as the reference site for River Tapti, which almost meets the upper expectation of the metrics explored. Continuous scoring method was applied to evaluate the biotic integrity in the selected sites of the river. The IBI score based on the pooled fish abundance data in River Tapti ranged from 33 to 60. Assessment of the ecological health revealed that three-fourth of the river stretch was moderately impaired (25-50% of impairment) and the most deteriorated site was Kamrej with 45% of impairment which might be due to its location in the urban area with high influx of domestic sewage and industrial effluents. The IBI scores were plotted and compared with an independent estimate of water quality. The CCA with environmental and IBI variables revealed higher correlation with each other and the functional groups such as carnivores, herbivores, and fishes with high population doubling time (PDT) were found in close association with nitrate-N, total alkalinity, and specific conductivity. The study urges the need for the adoption of proper management and mitigation measures to restore the health and wealth of aquatic ecosystem.

Fish community structure varies by location and presence of artificial islands: a case study in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario

Artificial islands and reefs have been used in the Laurentian Great Lakes for over 40 years as a means of improving aquatic habitat; but research on their efficacy has primarily focused on their ability to increase the abundance of specific sportfish, top predators, or other keystone species. To understand the importance of islands in structuring the whole fish community, we took a holistic approach and analysed the effect of islands, location, and the interaction effect between the two in structuring fish communities in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario using a 30-year electrofishing dataset. The effect of islands varied by location within the harbour, with some species showing a preference for islands in some locations while avoiding them in others. Island communities also tended to have significantly different species compositions, with higher index of biotic integrity scores and species richness, greater numbers of pollution intolerant fishes, centrarchids, and fewer generalist species. However, these results paled in comparison to the level of inter-annual variation in the fish community of the harbour, which has changed markedly over the 30-year time span. Taken together, our results highlight that while island creation can influence the fish community, the type and magnitude of effect will vary based on their distance to other suitable habitats (i.e., location within the system) and the design of the island itself. Further, the noted inter-annual variability emphasizes the importance of considering long time scales (> 10–20 years) when exploring fish community responses to habitat creation. Collectively, these results will help the design of more effective management strategies for restoring fish communities.

Land Cover and Human Disturbance Impact on Water Chemistry and Ecological Health in an Asian Temperate Lotic System

The ecological integrity of lotic ecosystems is influenced by land cover type and human activity throughout the watershed. This study evaluated Nakdong River conditions in 2016 using two multi-metric models, the index of biotic integrity (IBI) and the water pollution index (WPI), and compared model outputs for four land cover types: predominantly urban, forest, barren land, and agricultural. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the land cover type and human disturbance metrics effectively regulate water quality, fish communities, and ecological integrity in the Nakdong River basin. Predominantly forest sites had low nutrient, organic matter, suspended solids, ion, and algal chlorophyll concentrations. In contrast, these concentrations were higher in predominantly agricultural, urban, and barren land areas. Concentrations of nutrients, organic matter, ions, suspended particle loadings, and algal growth regulated by the intensity of the Asian summer monsoon. Model outputs indicated that total phosphorus (TP) was the most important factor in algal growth in agricultural (R2 = 0.25) and barren land (R2 = 0.35) sites, and evidence of P limitation was found, with TN:TP ratios >17 in ambient water. Fish community analysis indicated that tolerant species dominated the fish community in the agricultural (52%), barren land (85%), and urban sites (53%), and sensitive species were dominant in the forest sites (56%). Fish composition analysis indicated that two exotic species (Lepomis macrochirus (3.99%) and Micropterus salmoides (3.92%)) were identified as the fifth and seventh most abundant fish species in the watershed and labeled as “ecologically disturbing species” in Korea. Nutrient enrichment, organic pollution, and algal blooms enhanced the mean relative abundance of omnivorous and tolerant fish species. Mean WPI and IBI scores indicated fair or poor conditions in the agricultural (WPI: 22, IBI: 16), barren land (WPI: 21, IBI: 14), and urban (WPI: 21, IBI: 17) sites and good or fair conditions in forest (WPI: 28, IBI: 21) sites. The chemical (r = −0.34) and biological (r = −0.21) health of the river basin were negatively related to human disturbance metrics. The findings suggested that regional land cover, summer monsoon intensity, and human disturbance are important drivers of water quality, fish community, and ecological health. The resulting information suggested that agricultural diffuse pollution control, cutting-edge wastewater treatment technologies, and reducing the degrees of human disturbance could improve the Nakdong River’s ecological integrity.

Integration of ABC curve, three dimensions of alpha diversity indices, and spatial patterns of fish assemblages into the health assessment of the Chishui River basin, China.

Index of biotic integrity (IBI) based on fish has been applied globally. However, few have considered that fish assemblages change among different aggregate ecoregions when conducted their health assessment. Indeed, some comprehensive indices, such as functional and phylogenetic diversity indices and ABC curve, can be used to identify aspects that are not captured by traditional metrics. Consequently, we try to integrate comprehensive indices and spatial patterns of fish assemblages to develop IBI systems and then verified their effectiveness and accuracy for assessing the environmental health of the Chishui River basin. The comprehensive disturbance index (CDI), based on 11 water quality parameters and 4 human land use, was set to distinguish reference sites and impaired sites. According to the spatial patterns of fish assemblages, the 40 sites were finally divided into 2 aggregate ecoregions, include wadeable streams and nonwadeable rivers. 97 candidate metrics were selected to develop our IBI systems based on the systematic screening method. The result also showed that our IBI systems performed well in discriminating anthropogenic disturbances at both aggregate ecoregions, which suggests that our systems could provide a reliable evaluation. The mean IBI score of the Chishui River basin was 72.09 ± 16.58, and was classified as good status. However, S1 (Chishuiyuan Town), Baisha River, Tongzi River, and Xishui River were disturbed by various human activities. We conclude that the spatial patterns of fish assemblages should be combined with more comprehensive indices to assess river health. On the other hand, we do believe that the process of developing and verifying our IBI systems could be regarded as a reference for biomonitoring in more mountain river systems.

Development and validation of a fish-based index of biotic integrity for assessing the ecological health of Indian Rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi-Devi

Abstract India has a vast network of 14 major rivers and their tributaries, covering 83% of the drainage basin and accounting for 85% of the surface flow. Anthropogenic activities like damming, channel modification, water abstraction, sewage and effluent disposal, sand mining, unthoughtful exploitation of biotic resources, etc. are the major threats faced by the rivers in the country. Monitoring protocol of Indian rivers lacks an integrated approach based on judicious use of both abiotic and biotic components as well as a total lack of consideration for ecological health. Index of Biotic Integrity is a flexible multimetric index that can be modified and adapted to the various zoogeographic regions of the world. A fish-based multi-metric IBI was developed by modifying and incorporating metrics that are sensitive to the various ecological stressors faced by Indian rivers, fishes being excellent indicators of river health. The adapted IBI was validated and used to assess ecological health of two rivers—Mahanadi, and its distributary Kathajodi-Devi—flowing through central-eastern India. The study indicated that in River Mahanadi, around 25% of the freshwater river stretch was slightly impaired and the remaining 75% stretch was moderately impaired. In Kathajodi-Devi, most of the river stretches were in a moderately impaired condition, except at Italnga stretch where the river was severely impaired. The Index of Biotic Integrity scores estimated could reflect the ecological health of the rivers. The study shows that use of Index of Biotic Integrity is a useful and reliable approach to assess the health conditions of Indian aquatic resources warranting initiatives to be taken to implement and incorporate it into the country's water resource management.

Lessons learned from 20 y of monitoring suburban development with distributed stormwater management in Clarksburg, Maryland, USA

Urban development is a well-known stressor for stream ecosystems, presenting a challenge to managers tasked with mitigating its effects. For the past 20 y, streamflow, water quality, geomorphology, and benthic communities were monitored in 5 watersheds in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. This study presents a synthesis of multiple studies of monitoring efforts in the study area and new analysis of more recent monitoring data to document the primary lessons learned from monitoring. The monitored watersheds include a forested control, an urban control with centralized stormwater management, and 3 suburban treatment watersheds featuring low-impact development and a high density of infiltration-focused stormwater facilities distributed across the watershed. Treatment watersheds were monitored before development, during construction, and after development. Monitoring was initiated to inform adaptive management of stormwater and impervious cover limits within the study area, with a focus on the impacts of distributed stormwater management. Results from our synthesis indicate that distributed stormwater management is advantageous compared with centralized stormwater management in numerous ways. Hydrologic benefits were greater with distributed stormwater infrastructure, demonstrating the ability to mitigate runoff volumes and peak flows and, for small storms, replicate predevelopment conditions. Baseflow temporarily increased during the construction phase in the treatment watersheds. Water-quality benefits were mixed, with declines in baseflow nitrate concentrations but limited changes to nitrate export and increases in specific conductance after development. Substantial topographic changes occurred during construction in the treatment watersheds, including changes within the riparian zone, despite riparian buffer protections. Ecological monitoring indicated that even though index of biotic integrity scores rebounded in some cases, sensitive benthic macroinvertebrate families did not fully recover in the treatment watersheds. Lessons learned from this synthesis highlight the importance of tracking multiple indicators of stream health and considering past land use and that more stormwater facilities distributed across the watershed is beneficial but cannot mitigate the effects of all urban stressors on aquatic ecosystems.

Assessment of the Ecological Health of Afrotropical Rivers Using Fish Assemblages: A Case Study of Selected Rivers in the Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya

Streams and rivers are globally threatened ecosystems because of increasing levels of exploitation, habitat degradation and other anthropogenic pressures. In the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) in East Africa, these threats are mostly caused by unsustainable land use; however, the monitoring of ecological integrity of river systems has been hampered by a lack of locally developed indices. This study assessed the health of four rivers (Nzoia, Nyando, Sondu–Miriu and Mara) on the Kenyan side of the LVB using physicochemical water quality parameters and a fish-based index of biotic integrity (IBI). Fish tolerance ranking was derived from principal component analysis of water quality parameters, and the concept of niche breadth (NB). The relationship between fish species and water quality parameters was examined with canonical correspondence analysis, whereas community metrics and stressors were evaluated through Pearson network correlation analysis. Fish species richness, trophic structures, taxonomic composition and species tolerance were used to generate the metrics for fish-based IBI. NB showed that most of the fish species were moderately tolerant to poor water. Moderately tolerant and intolerant fish species were negatively correlated with a high level of organic loading in the Mara River. Fish-based IBI scores for the rivers ranged from 26 to 34, with Sondu–Miriu scoring the lowest. Our results show that the cumulative effect of stressors can adequately rank fish species tolerance according to the disturbance gradients and further develop regional metrics to assess river health. Despite the fact that fish communities are declining, continual management and enforcement of environmental regulations are important, with conservation and management of headwaters and low-order streams being essential while they are still species rich.

Headwater stream condition and nutrient runoff: Relating SWAT to empirical ecological measures in an agricultural watershed in Pennsylvania.

Managing nonpoint sources of nutrients and sediments is the primary challenge for improving conditions in the Susquehanna-Chesapeake basin. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are widely used indicators of stream ecological integrity, but the relationship between nutrient runoff and macroinvertebrate response remains indistinct. Logistical and financial hurdles hinder collection of high-resolution empirical nutrient data, but landscape-based models like the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) offer a more practical approach. Nutrient runoff was simulated with SWAT for a small, upland, agricultural Pennsylvania watershed. Three levels of ecological assessment were used to interpret SWAT results. Macroinvertebrate communities (intensive) were sampled at 14 sites and described using an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Biological integrity was moderately degraded in many reaches. The Stream-Wetland-Riparian (SWR) Index (rapid) and landscape metrics (remote) also indicated prevalent agricultural stressors. Baseflow nitrate grab samples, collected once per season, showed no significant relationship with IBI score. Thirty spatiotemporal scales of nutrient data were extracted from SWAT for phosphorus, nitrate, and organic nitrogen. Best subsets regression was performed on IBI scores using SWAT, land cover, and SWR variables. Results were significant (p<.001) with high R2 values (84.8 and 86.2), signifying a negative relationship between instream nutrient concentration and IBI score. This study demonstrates the viability of SWAT as an alternative to in-field nutrient sampling, the value of spatiotemporal scale in model outputs, and the importance of site condition variables in relating nutrients to stream ecological health.

Associations between Biotic Integrity and Sport Fish Populations in Upper Midwest, USA Rivers, with Emphasis on Smallmouth Bass.

Indices of biotic integrity (IBIs) are used to assess ecosystem health of streams and rivers. Streams and rivers with high IBI scores should support abundant and healthy populations of recreationally important sport fishes. However, the fundamental assumption that IBI scores and sport fish populations are associated needs to be examined. To verify this assumption, we tested associations between IBI scores and relative abundance of all sport fishes targeted by anglers, with emphasis on relative abundance of four size groups of smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu at 54 stream and river reaches in 2012 and 2013. We also tested for associations with smallmouth bass body condition and growth. A total of 13,708 fishes representing 85 species were captured including 11 sport fish species that included 571 smallmouth bass. We found that the maximum potential relative abundance of sport fishes and smallmouth bass size classes, as well as body condition of bass between 180 and 279 mm, could be predicted by IBI scores. We did not observe significant relationships with body condition of other bass size classes or with growth. Whereas abundance patterns were variable at reaches with higher IBI scores, abundance of larger, quality-sized sport fishes were more limited at reaches with IBI scores <30 that were classified as having poor biotic integrity. Maximum potential body condition was predicted to exceed 95, a condition value indicative of healthy fish, at IBI scores exceeding 50, reflective of reaches being classified as either fair, good, or excellent. These results confirm that management activities that enhance or maintain biotic integrity also support high-quality habitat for sport fish. While our findings support using IBIs as an indicator of the fishable goal specified in the United States Clean Water Act, managers should recognize that other factors not necessarily represented by the index can also limit sport fish populations.

A new tool to assess ecosystem health in large subtropical reservoirs: Development and validation of a Planktonic Index of Biotic Integrity

We developed and validated a Planktonic Index of Biotic Integrity for subtropical reservoirs to assess their ecosystem health. For this purpose, we analyzed the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities and determined reservoir trophic status in the Paranapanema River system (Southeast Brazil). Eleven dams were constructed in the main course of this river to supply hydropower plants. Three of the reservoirs are accumulation systems (i.e. with high water retention times), whereas the others are run-of-the-river systems. For the study the three larger reservoirs (Jurumirim, Chavantes and Capivara) were selected. Physical, chemical, and biological (phytoplankton and zooplankton) data were obtained in two sampling campaigns carried out in March (wet season) and October (dry season) of 2011. For each reservoir we sampled six stations, arranged on a gradient established between the lotic (Paranapanema River entrance) and lentic (dam) areas. According to the Trophic State Index for tropical/subtropical reservoirs, the sampling stations were categorized between ultraoligotrophic and mesotrophic. Four metrics achieved significant discrimination (out of a set of 20 candidate metrics). The individual metric scores were summed to provide a Planktonic Index of Biotic Integrity score, which ranged as Mesotrophic (4-9), Oligotrophic (10-14) and Ultraoligotrophic (15-20), corresponding to the classification of fair, good and excellent, respectively. Following the longitudinal sequence, Jurumirim was classified as Oligotophic (Good) and both Chavantes and Capivara as Ultraoligotrophic (Excellent). This study demonstrated that the Planktonic Index of Biotic Integrity is a potential tool for monitoring large subtropical reservoirs, as planktonic organisms are sensitive to environmental changes and this index integrates distinct temporal and spatial scales.

Decline in New Zealand's freshwater fish fauna: effect of land use

The number of New Zealand’s freshwater fish listed as threatened has increased since 1992 when the first New Zealand threat classification system list was compiled. In this study, temporal and land cover-related trends were analysed for data on freshwater fish distribution, comprising more than 20000 records for the 47 years from January 1970 to January 2017 from the New Zealand Freshwater Fish Database. The analysis included individual species abundance and distribution trends, as well as an index of fish community integrity, namely the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Of the 25 fish species that met the requirements for analysis to determine changes in the proportion of sites they occupied over time, 76% had negative trends (indicating declining occurrence). Of the 20 native species analysed for the proportion of sites occupied over time, 75% had negative trends; 65% of these were significant declines and more species were in decline at pasture sites than natural cover sites. The average IBI score also declined over the time period and, when analysed separately, the major land cover types revealed that the IBI declined at pasture catchment sites but not at sites with natural vegetation catchments.

Fish community indices of ecosystem health: How does Toronto Harbour compare to other Lake Ontario nearshore areas?

We assessed fish community status for 16 nearshore areas in Lake Ontario and the upper St. Lawrence River, from 2006 to 2016, using complementary fish sampling gear types and protocols, boat electrofishing and trap nets, and the published aquatic ecosystem health indicators associated with them. Factors influencing Indices of Biotic Integrity scores included degree of exposure to the open-waters of Lake Ontario, effective fetch, and land cover and use in surrounding watersheds. Focusing on Toronto Harbour, we determined that Indices of Biotic Integrity scores were lower (45.1 and 45.6 for electrofishing and trap net gear types, respectively) than predicted (55.5 and 59.6) based on other Lake Ontario nearshore areas with similar physical/environmental conditions but seemed reasonable given the significant influence of Canada’s largest urban area, the City of Toronto. The proportion of fish community biomass comprised of piscivores (0.21 and 0.18 for electrofishing and trap nets, respectively) approached target levels (0.20) set for the Toronto Harbour fish community, and indicated a balanced trophic structure. On-going aquatic habitat remediation and creation projects on the Leslie Street Spit (including Tommy Thompson Park) and the Toronto Islands, should ensure maintenance or improvement in Indices of Biotic Integrity scores and aquatic ecosystem health generally.

Assessing the causal relationships of ecological integrity: a re‐evaluation of Karr's iconic Index of Biotic Integrity

AbstractThe Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) has been widely used since the 1980s to estimate ecological integrity—the capacity of an ecosystem to support and maintain its full range of components and processes. Despite this, IBI approaches have been criticized for their lack of objectivity, of justification for the selection of metrics, and of statistical rigor. In this paper, we assessed the potential of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and Structural equation modeling (SEM) as complementary methods for assessing ecological integrity. We use an iconic freshwater ecosystem dataset from Northeastern Illinois to assess ecological integrity using both classical IBI approach, and compare this with alternative methods. When we attempt to replicate the IBI methodology, we find issues with the approach including the possibility of the same IBI value for many possible levels of ecological integrity. We showed with the use of other methods (CCA) that the use of tolerant species, total abundance, and total richness—all defining components in IBI—can result in misleading interpretations of ecological integrity and that IBI scores might not comprehensively depict integrity scenarios. Structural equation modeling allowed us to test a conceptual causal model of ecological integrity. We found that water quality had an effect on the diversity and abundance of fish, and these in turn had an effect on trophic function, revealing important relationships between variables that contribute to ecological integrity. We conclude that CCA and SEM can complement multimetric indices, like IBI, and help with the development of more reliable, objective, and science‐based estimations of ecosystem integrity, as well as generate testable hypotheses about ecological integrity.

The Value of Long-Term Stream Invertebrate Data Collected by Citizen Scientists.

The purpose of this investigation was to systematically examine the variability associated with temporally-oriented invertebrate data collected by citizen scientists and consider the value of such data for use in stream management. Variability in invertebrate data was estimated for three sources of variation: sampling, within-reach spatial and long-term temporal. Long-term temporal data were also evaluated using ordinations and an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Through two separate investigations over an 11-year study period, participants collected more than 400 within-reach samples during 44 sampling events at three streams in the western United States. Within-reach invertebrate abundance coefficient of variation (CV) ranged from 0.44–0.50 with approximately 62% of the observed variation strictly due to sampling. Long-term temporal CV ranged from 0.31–0.36 with 27–30% of the observed variation in invertebrate abundance related to climate conditions (El Niño strength) and sampling year. Ordinations showed that citizen-generated assemblage data could reliably detect differences between study streams and seasons. IBI scores were significantly different between streams but not seasons. The findings of this study suggest that citizen data would likely detect a change in mean invertebrate density greater than 50% and would also be useful for monitoring changes in assemblage. The information presented here will help stream managers interpret and evaluate changes to the stream invertebrate community detected by citizen-based programs.

Can Species Distribution Models Aid Bioassessment when Reference Sites are Lacking? Tests Based on Freshwater Fishes.

Recent literature reviews of bioassessment methods raise questions about use of least-impacted reference sites to characterize natural conditions that no longer exist within contemporary landscapes. We explore an alternate approach for bioassessment that uses species site occupancy data from museum archives as input for species distribution models (SDMs) stacked to predict species assemblages of freshwater fishes in Texas. When data for estimating reference conditions are lacking, deviation between richness of contemporary versus modeled species assemblages could provide a means to infer relative biological integrity at appropriate spatial scales. We constructed SDMs for 100 freshwater fish species to compare predicted species assemblages to data on contemporary assemblages acquired by four independent surveys that sampled 269 sites. We then compared site-specific observed/predicted ratios of the number of species at sites to scores from a multimetric index of biotic integrity (IBI). Predicted numbers of species were moderately to strongly correlated with the numbers observed by the four surveys. We found significant, though weak, relationships between observed/predicted ratios and IBI scores. SDM-based assessments identified patterns of local assemblage change that were congruent with IBI inferences; however, modeling artifacts that likely contributed to over-prediction of species presence may restrict the stand-alone use of SDM-derived patterns for bioassessment and therefore warrant examination. Our results suggest that when extensive standardized survey data that include reference sites are lacking, as is commonly the case, SDMs derived from generally much more readily available species site occupancy data could be used to provide a complementary tool for bioassessment.

A Fish-Based Index of Biotic Integrity for the Assessment of Streams Located in a Sugarcane-Dominated Landscape in Southeastern Brazil.

A multimetric, fish-based Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was developed and tested to assess the ecological status of streams with different riparian conditions in the Piracicaba River Basin. Nine streams with three categories of riparian zone preservation were selected: native forest (NF) with preserved forest, secondary forest (SF) with forest in an advanced state of regeneration and surrounded by sugarcane plantations, and sugarcane (SC) without riparian vegetation and surrounded by SC crops. A continuous scoring system was employed, and candidate metrics were tested for range, responsiveness, and redundancy, resulting in the selection of eight metrics to compose the index. The final IBI score was positively correlated with an Environmental Index both in the dry (Spearman's rho = 0.76; P = 0.01) and rainy seasons (Spearman's rho = 0.66; P = 0.04), suggesting that this IBI is a suitable tool for the assessment of the biological conditions of these streams. The highest IBI values were observed in the rainy season at the NF and SF sites, with significant differences between the NF and SC sites (Kruskal-Wallis test: P = 0.03). The results indicated some variability in the biological integrity at SF and SC sites, suggesting a relationship with the intensity of the management of this crop. Patterns were consistent with other studies that have shown the effects of agriculture on the environmental quality of streams, which indicate the importance of the riparian zone to the maintenance of ecosystem integrity and supports the use of the IBI for biological monitoring in similar regions.

Recovery of Stream Communities Following Surface Coal Mine Reclamation

Watershed, riparian zone, and in-stream habitat reclamation activities were implemented following surface coal mining in a headwater stream watershed. A three-year post-reclamation assessment was conducted of water quality, habitat, and biological communities. Water quality in reclaimed reaches was generally similar to that of the reference reach. Stream habitat assessments indicated “suboptimal” conditions for reference and reclaimed reaches. Fish index of biotic integrity scores indicated “fair” biotic status for reference and re-claimed reaches. Benthic macroinvertebrate riffle and multi-habitat community metrics indicated slight or no impairment in the reclaimed reaches as compared to the reference reach, and a mussel community was quickly established in reclaimed reaches despite its pre-mining absence. Overall, water quality, habitat, and biological conditions in reclaimed stream reaches were similar to those of the reference reach, demonstrating that small headwater streams can quickly recover following reclamation techniques suitable to the ecological setting. However, the recovery may have been a function of the quality of the biological communities being somewhat limited by the flat topography of the local and regional watershed.

Relationships among varying sampling distance and the IBI in warmwater, headwater streams of the Eastern Corn Belt Plain.

Single-pass electrofishing was used to define the most efficient sampling distance to assess stream condition using the index of biotic integrity (IBI) methodology in headwater (<36 km(2) drainage area), warmwater streams in the Eastern Corn Belt Plain ecoregion. Based on wetted widths (1-3.3 m) of sampled reaches, we defined effort based on increased area (range 50-555 m(2)). Sampled area necessary to capture a representative fish assemblage increased until 167-m(2) distance, which is equivalent to a minimum sampling distance of one habitat cycle. No significant difference in metric actual observed value response was found with increasing habitat cycle. Increased effort is required in smaller streams widths (≤1 m) to achieve the recommended sample area. The effect of rare fish on the IBI was tested using a modified Walford method. A significant decrease in IBI score was observed when 10% of the rare data were removed. The presence of rare fish did not influence individual IBI metrics or scores for either the increased effort or reduced effort calibrations until greater than 3% of the data was removed for number of species, 15% removal of data for number of minnow species, and 5% removal of data for catch per unit effort (CPUE). Increased effort did not affect any metric or IBI score, while reduced effort influenced the number of darter, madtom, and sculpin species and catch per unit effort metric scores but did not affect IBI score.

Status and Trends in Biotic Integrity in a Sub‐Tropical River Drainage: Analysis of the Fish Assemblage Over a Three Decade Period

AbstractWe characterized the biotic integrity of the sub‐tropical Duero River, Mexico, comparing current and past index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores with results of an environmental quality index (EQI), inventorying abiotic characteristics and human impacts, and documenting ecosystem changes over the last three decades. We sampled the fish community and measured environmental variables during the dry season of 2009 at 19 sites. We compared 2009 findings with fish data obtained in 1986 and 1991 at nine of the sites. The correlation between the IBI and EQI was high (r2 = 0.79, p = 0.0002), indicating that the IBI accurately characterized environmental condition. Thirteen sites were degraded (68%) based on IBI scores, three were fair (16%) and three had good conditions (16%). Based on the EQI, 12 sites were classified as poor (63%), two as fair (11%) and five as good (19%). A cluster analysis of nine abiotic variables and the IBI values yielded three groups: six sites with good integrity and environmental quality, eight with high chemical oxygen demand and four with high total dissolved solids. A discriminant analysis (square canonical correlation: 0.922, and Wilks' lambda significance: 0.001) identified biochemical oxygen demand, distance to vegetation and total dissolved solids as the main predictors. Compared to 1986 and 1991, 2009 IBI values and ratings had declined significantly (multiple response permutation procedure A = 0.16, p = 0.0005), indicating a trend of environmental deterioration, with scores and ratings at 7 of 9 sites lower in 2009. One site had declined from good to fair, one from good to poor, five from fair to poor, one had remained fair and one had remained good. Degradation was related to excessive human water use, reduced river flows, increased wastewater discharge, deforestation, erosion, and invasive species, and mismanagement of preserved sites (springs), all of which highlight an urgent need to reverse declining environmental conditions.
