The Supersonic Project: Early Star Formation with the Streaming Velocity

At high redshifts (z ≳ 12), the relative velocity between baryons and dark matter (the so-called streaming velocity) significantly affects star formation in low-mass objects. Streaming substantially reduces the abundance of low-mass gas objects while simultaneously allowing for the formation of supersonically induced gas objects (SIGOs) and their associated star clusters outside of dark matter halos. Here, we present a study of the population-level effects of streaming on star formation within both halos and SIGOs in a set of simulations with and without streaming. Notably, we find that streaming actually enhances star formation within individual halos of all masses at redshifts between z = 12 and z = 20. This is demonstrated both as an increased star formation rate per object as well as an enhancement of the Kennicutt–Schmidt relation for objects with streaming. We find that our simulations are consistent with some observations at high redshift, but on a population level, they continue to underpredict star formation relative to the majority of observations. Notably, our simulations do not include feedback and so can be taken as an upper limit on the star formation rate, exacerbating these differences. However, simulations of overdense regions (both with and without streaming) agree with observations, suggesting a strategy for extracting information about the overdensity and streaming velocity in a given survey volume in future observations.

The Complex Star Formation History of the Halo of NGC 5128 (Cen A)

NGC 5128 (Cen A) is the nearest giant elliptical galaxy and one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the sky, boasting a prominent dust lane and jets emanating from its nuclear supermassive black hole. In this paper, we construct the star formation history (SFH) of two small fields in the halo of NGC 5128: a northeastern field (Field 1) at a projected distance of ∼18.8 kpc from the center, and a southern field (Field 2) ∼9.9 kpc from the center. Our method is based on identifying long-period variable (LPV) stars that trace their sibling stellar population and hence historical star formation due to their high luminosity and strong variability; we identified 395 LPV stars in Field 1 and 671 LPV stars in Field 2. Even though the two fields are ∼28 kpc apart on opposite sides from the center, they show similar SFHs. In Field 1, the star formation rate (SFR) increased significantly around t ∼ 800 Myr and t ∼ 3.8 Gyr and in Field 2, the SFR increased considerably around t ∼ 800 Myr, t ∼ 3.8 Gyr, and t ∼ 6.3 Gyr, where t is the lookback time. The increase in SFR ∼800 Myr ago agrees with previous suggestions that the galaxy experienced a merger around that time. The SFH reconstructed from LPV stars supports a scenario in which multiple episodes of nuclear activity lead to episodic jet-induced star formation. While there is no catalog of LPV stars for the central part of NGC 5128, applying our method to the outer regions (for the first time in a galaxy outside the Local Group) has enabled us to put constraints on the complex evolution of this cornerstone galaxy.

Comparative analysis of the SFR of AGN and non-AGN galaxies, as a function of stellar mass, AGN power, cosmic time, and obscuration

This study involves a comparative analysis of the star formation rates (SFRs) of active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies and non-AGN galaxies and of the SFRs of type 1 and 2 AGNs. To carry out this investigation, we assembled a dataset consisting of 2677 X-ray AGNs detected by the XMM-Newton observatory and a control sample of 64 556 galaxies devoid of AGNs. We generated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these objects using photometric data from the DES, VHS, and AllWISE surveys, and we harnessed the CIGALE code to extract measurements for the (host) galaxy properties. Our dataset encompasses a diverse parameter space, with objects spanning a range of stellar masses from 9.5 < log [M*(M⊙)] < 12.0, intrinsic X-ray luminosities within 42 < log[LX,2−10 keV(erg s−1)] < 45.5, and redshifts between 0.3 < z < 2.5. To compare SFRs, we calculated the SFRnorm parameter, which signifies the ratio of the SFR of an AGN galaxy to the SFR of non-AGN galaxies sharing similar M* and redshift. Our analysis reveals that systems hosting an AGN tend to exhibit elevated SFRs compared to non-AGN galaxies, particularly beyond a certain threshold in LX. Notably, this threshold increases as we move toward more massive galaxies. Additionally, for AGN systems with the same LX, the magnitude of the SFRnorm decreases as we consider more massive galaxies. This suggests that in galaxies with an AGN, the increase in SFR as a function of stellar mass is not as prominent as in galaxies without an AGN. This interpretation finds support in the shallower slope that we identify in the X-ray star-forming main sequence in contrast to the galaxy main sequence. Employing CIGALE’s measurements, we classified AGNs into type 1 and type 2. In our investigation, we focused on a subset of 652 type 1 AGNs and 293 type 2 AGNs within the stellar mass range of 10.5 < log[M (M⊙)] < 11.5. Based on our results, type 1 AGNs display higher SFRs than type 2 AGNs, at redshifts below z < 1. However, at higher redshifts, the SFRs of the two AGN populations tend to be similar. At redshifts z < 1, type 1 AGNs show augmented SFRs in comparison to non-AGN galaxies. In contrast, type 2 AGNs exhibit lower SFRs when compared to galaxies that do not host an AGN, at least up to log[LX,2−10 keV(erg s−1)] < 45.

Unveiling the origins of galactic bars: insights from barred and unbarred galaxies

ABSTRACT A significant fraction of local galaxies exhibit stellar bars, non-axisymmetric structures composed of stars, gas, and dust. Identifying key differences between the properties of barred and unbarred galaxies can uncover clues about the conditions for triggering bar formation. We explore the early stages of bar formation in a small sample of disc barred galaxies extracted from the TNG50 cosmological simulation, and compare their properties to those of unbarred galaxies. According to our results, the most important difference between barred and unbarred galaxies is that the former have systematically higher fractions of stellar to dark matter mass in their inner regions, from very early stages and prior to the formation of the bars. They harbour high initial gas content, fostering increased star formation rates and leading to a central mass concentration that grows faster over time compared to unbarred galaxies. Examining the evolution of the halo spin within $10\, \mathrm{ckpc}$ reveals that barred galaxies have higher angular momentum transfer from the disc to the halo. Curiously, both barred and unbarred galaxies share similar initial low values of the halo spin, consistent with those proposed in the literature for bar formation. Furthermore, we evaluate existing stability criteria to capture the complexity of the process, and investigate the effects of mergers, flybys, and environment as possible drivers of bar formation. We find no clear link between mergers and disc instabilities resulting in the formation of bars, even though some of the simulated barred galaxies might have been influenced by these events.

CO Excitation in High-z Main-sequence Analogues: Resolved CO(4−3)/CO(3−2) Line Ratios in DYNAMO Galaxies

The spectral line energy distribution of carbon monoxide contains information about the physical conditions of the star-forming molecular hydrogen gas; however, the relation to local radiation field properties is poorly constrained. Using ∼1–2 kpc scale Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of CO(3−2) and CO(4−3), we characterize the CO(4−3)/CO(3−2) line ratios of local analogues of main-sequence galaxies at z ∼ 1–2, drawn from the DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) sample. We measure CO(4−3)/CO(3−2) across the disk of each galaxy and find a median line ratio of R 43 = 0.54 for the sample. This is higher than literature estimates of local star-forming galaxies and is consistent with multiple lines of evidence that indicate DYNAMO galaxies, despite residing in the local universe, resemble main-sequence galaxies at z ∼ 1–2. Comparing with existing lower-resolution CO(1−0) observations, we find R 41 and R 31 values in the range ∼0.2–0.3 and ∼0.4–0.8, respectively. We combine our kiloparsec-scale resolved line ratio measurements with Hubble Space Telescope observations of Hα to investigate the relation to the star formation rate surface density and compare this relation to expectations from models. We find increasing CO(4−3)/CO(3−2) with increasing star formation rate surface density; however, models overpredict the line ratios across the range of star formation rate surface densities we probe, in particular at the lower range. Finally, Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy observations with the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera Plus and Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer reveal low dust temperatures and no deficit of [Cii] emission with respect to the total infrared luminosity.

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the long-wavelength dust continuum are used to estimate the gas masses in a sample of 708 star-forming galaxies at z = 0.3−4.5. We determine the dependence of gas masses and star formation efficiencies (SFEs; SFR per unit gas mass) on redshift (z), M *, and star formation rate (SFR) relative to the main sequence (MS). We find that 70% of the increase in SFRs of the MS is due to the increased gas masses at earlier epochs, while 30% is due to increased efficiency of star formation (SF). For galaxies above the MS this is reversed—with 70% of the increased SFR relative to the MS being due to elevated SFEs. Thus, the major evolution of star formation activity at early epochs is driven by increased gas masses, while the starburst activity taking galaxies above the MS is due to enhanced triggering of star formation (likely due to galactic merging). The interstellar gas peaks at z = 2 and dominates the stellar mass down to z = 1.2. Accretion rates needed to maintain continuity of the MS evolution reach >100 M ⊙ yr−1 at z > 2. The galactic gas contents are likely the driving determinant for both the rise in SF and AGN activity from z = 5 to their peak at z = 2 and subsequent fall at lower z. We suggest that for self-gravitating clouds with supersonic turbulence, cloud collisions and the filamentary structure of the clouds regulate the star formation activity.

Cloud-scale radio surveys of star formation and feedback in Triangulum Galaxy M 33: VLA observations

ABSTRACT Studying the interplay between massive star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM) is paramount to understand the evolution of galaxies. Radio continuum (RC) emission serves as an extinction-free tracer of both massive star formation and the energetic components of the ISM. We present a multiband RC survey of the Local Group galaxy M 33 down to ≃30 pc linear resolution observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We calibrate the star formation rate surface density and investigate the impact of diffuse emission on this calibration using a structural decomposition. Separating the thermal and non-thermal emission components, the correlation between different phases of the ISM, and the impact of massive star formation are being investigated. Radio sources with sizes ≲200 pc constitute about 36 per cent (46 per cent) of the total RC emission at 1.5 GHz (6.3 GHz) in the inner 18 × 18 arcmin2 (or 4 kpc × 4 kpc) disc of M 33. The non-thermal spectral index becomes flatter with increasing star formation rate surface density, indicating the escape of cosmic ray electrons from their birth places. The magnetic field strength also increases with star formation rate following a bi-modal relation, indicating that the small-scale turbulent dynamo acts more efficiently at higher luminosities and star formation rates. Although the correlations are tighter in star-forming regions, the non-thermal emission is also correlated with the more quiescent molecular gas in the ISM. An almost linear molecular star formation law exists in M 33 when excluding diffuse structures. Massive star formation amplifies the magnetic field and increases the number of high-energy cosmic ray electrons, which can help the onset of winds and outflows.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: global properties of kinematically misaligned galaxies

ABSTRACT We select 456 gas–star kinematically misaligned galaxies from the internal Product Launch-10 of MaNGA survey, including 74 star-forming (SF), 136 green-valley (GV), and 206 quiescent (QS) galaxies. We find that the distributions of difference between gas and star position angles for galaxies have three local peaks at ∼0°, 90°, and 180°. The fraction of misaligned galaxies peaks at log (M*/M⊙) ∼ 10.5 and declines to both low- and high-mass end. This fraction decreases monotonically with increasing star formation rate and specific star formation rate. We compare the global parameters including gas kinematic asymmetry Vasym, H i detection rate and mass fraction of molecular gas, effective radius Re, Sérsic index n as well as spin parameter $\lambda _{R_e}$ between misaligned galaxies and their control samples. We find that the misaligned galaxies have lower H i detection rate and molecular gas mass fraction, smaller size, higher Sérsic index, and lower spin parameters than their control samples. The SF and GV misaligned galaxies are more asymmetric in gas velocity fields than their controls. These pieces of observational evidence point to the gas accretion scenario followed by angular momentum redistribution from gas–gas collision, leading to gas inflow and central star formation for the SF and GV misaligned galaxies. We propose three possible origins of the misaligned QS galaxies: (1) external gas accretion, (2) merger, and (3) GV misaligned galaxies evolve into QS galaxies.

The Herschel Orion Protostar Survey: Far-infrared Photometry and Colors of Protostars and Their Variations across Orion A and B*

Abstract The degree to which the properties of protostars are affected by environment remains an open question. To investigate this, we look at the Orion A and B molecular clouds, home to most of the protostars within 500 pc. At ∼400 pc, Orion is close enough to distinguish individual protostars across a range of environments in terms of both the stellar and gas projected densities. As part of the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS), we used the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer to map 108 partially overlapping square fields with edge lengths of 5′ or 8′ and measure the 70 and 160 μm flux densities of 338 protostars within them. In this paper we examine how these flux densities and their ratio depend on evolutionary state and environment within the Orion complex. We show that Class 0 protostars occupy a region of the 70 μm flux density versus 160 μm/70 μm flux density ratio diagram that is distinct from their more evolved counterparts. We then present evidence that the Integral-Shaped Filament (ISF) and Orion B contain protostars with more massive inner envelopes than those in the more sparsely populated LDN 1641 region. This can be interpreted as evidence for increasing star formation rates in the ISF and Orion B or as a tendency for more massive inner envelopes to be inherited from denser birth environments. We also provide technical details about the mapmaking and photometric procedures used in the HOPS program.

Explaining the chemical trajectories of accreted and in-situ halo stars of the Milky Way

ABSTRACT The Milky Way underwent its last significant merger ten billion years ago, when the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES) was accreted. Accreted GES stars and progenitor stars born prior to the merger make up the bulk of the inner halo. Even though these two main populations of halo stars have similar durations of star formation prior to their merger, they differ in [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] space, with the GES population bending to lower [α/Fe] at a relatively low value of [Fe/H]. We use cosmological simulations of a ‘Milky Way’ to argue that the different tracks of the halo stars through the [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane are due to a difference in their star formation history and efficiency, with the lower mass GES having its low and constant star formation regulated by feedback whilst the higher mass main progenitor has a higher star formation rate prior to the merger. The lower star formation efficiency of GES leads to lower gas pollution levels, pushing [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] tracks to the left. In addition, the increasing star formation rate maintains a higher relative contribution of Type II SNe to Type Ia SNe for the main progenitor population that formed during the same time period, thus maintaining a relatively high [α/Fe]. Thus the different positions of the downturns in the [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane for the GES stars are not reflective of different star formation durations, but instead reflect different star formation efficiencies.

The systematically varying stellar IMF

AbstractSome ultra-compact dwarf galaxies have large dynamical mass to light (M / L) ratios and also appear to contain an overabundance of LMXB sources, and some Milky Way globular clusters have a low concentration and appear to have a deficit of low-mass stars. These observations can be explained if the stellar IMF becomes increasingly top-heavy with decreasing metallicity and increasing gas density of the forming object. The thus constrained stellar IMF then accounts for the observed trend of metallicity and M / L ratio found amongst M31 globular star clusters. It also accounts for the overall shift of the observationally deduced galaxy-wide IMF from top-light to top-heavy with increasing star formation rate amongst galaxies. If the IMF varies similarly to deduced here, then extremely young very massive star-burst clusters observed at a high redshift would appear quasar-like (Jerabkova et al. 2017).

The evolution of star formation in QSOs according to WISE

AbstractUsing WISE data, we calibrated the W2-W3 colors in terms of star formation rates (SFRs) and applied this calibration to a sample of 1285 QSOs with the highest flux quality, covering a range in redshift from z ˜ 0.3 to z ˜ 3.8. According to our calibration, the SFR increases continuously, reaching a value at z ˜ 3.8 about 3 times higher on average than at lower redshift. This increase in SFR is accompanied by an increase of the BH mass by a factor 100 and a gradual increase of the mean Eddington ratio from 0.1 to 0.3 up to z ˜ 1.5 – 2.0, above which the ratio stays constant, despite a significant increase in BH mass. Therefore, QSOs at high redshifts have both more active BHs and higher levels of star formation activity.

The MOSDEF Survey: Significant Evolution in the Rest-frame Optical Emission Line Equivalent Widths of Star-forming Galaxies at z = 1.4–3.8

Abstract We use extensive spectroscopy from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey to investigate the relationships between rest-frame optical emission line equivalent widths (W) and a number of galaxy and interstellar medium (ISM) characteristics for a sample of 1134 star-forming galaxies at redshifts 1.4 ≲ z ≲ 3.8. We examine how the equivalent widths of , , λλ4960, 5008, + Hβ, , and , depend on stellar mass, UV slope, age, star formation rate (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR), ionization parameter and excitation conditions (O32 and /Hβ), gas-phase metallicity, and ionizing photon production efficiency (ξ ion). The trend of increasing W with decreasing stellar mass is strongest for (and +Hβ). More generally, the equivalent widths of all the lines increase with redshift at a fixed stellar mass or fixed gas-phase metallicity, suggesting that high equivalent width galaxies are common at high redshift. This redshift evolution in equivalent widths can be explained by the increase in SFR and decrease in metallicity with redshift at a fixed stellar mass. Consequently, the dependence of W on sSFR is largely invariant with redshift, particularly when examined for galaxies of a given metallicity. Our results show that high equivalent width galaxies, specifically those with high , have low stellar masses, blue UV slopes, young ages, high sSFRs, ISM line ratios indicative of high ionization parameters, high ξ ion, and low metallicities. As these characteristics are often attributed to galaxies with high ionizing escape fractions, galaxies with high W are likely candidates for the population that dominates cosmic reionization.

Tidally Induced Morphology of M33 in Hydrodynamical Simulations of Its Recent Interaction with M31

Abstract We present a hydrodynamical model of M33 and its recent interaction with M31. This scenario was previously proposed in the literature in order to explain the distorted gaseous and stellar disks of M33, as well as the increased star formation rate in both objects around 2 Gyr ago. We used an orbit integration scheme to find which estimate of the transverse velocity of M31 favors the interaction scenario more and then tried to reproduce it in our simulations. M33 was modeled as a stellar and gaseous disk embedded in a live dark matter halo, while M31 was approximated only with a live dark halo. In the simulations, the two galaxies passed each other with a pericenter distance of 37 kpc. Tides excited a two-armed spiral structure in the M33 disk, which is found to be the predominant spiral signal in the observed galaxy and has long been known as a feature easily induced by tidal interactions. We found that the gaseous warp produced by the interaction did not resemble enough the observed one, and we performed an additional simulation including the hot gas halo of M31 to show that this feature can be properly reproduced by tidal forces and ram pressure stripping acting simultaneously on the gaseous disk. In addition to the spiral arms, tidal forces produced a stellar stream similar to the one observed and triggered a star formation burst at radii similar to where it is observed.

Spatially resolved cold molecular outflows in ULIRGs

We present new CO(2–1) observations of three low-z (d ~350 Mpc) ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) systems (six nuclei) observed with the Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array (ALMA) at high spatial resolution (~500 pc). We detect massive cold molecular gas outflows in five out of six nuclei (Mout ~ (0.3−5) × 108 M⊙). These outflows are spatially resolved with deprojected effective radii between 250 pc and 1 kpc although high-velocity molecular gas is detected up to Rmax ~ 0.5−1.8 kpc (1–6 kpc deprojected). The mass outflow rates are 12–400 M⊙ yr−1 and the inclination corrected average velocity of the outflowing gas is 350–550 km s−1 (vmax = 500−900 km s−1). The origin of these outflows can be explained by the strong nuclear starbursts although the contribution of an obscured active galactic nucleus cannot be completely ruled out. The position angle (PA) of the outflowing gas along the kinematic minor axis of the nuclear molecular disk suggests that the outflow axis is perpendicular to the disk for three of these outflows. Only in one case is the outflow PA clearly not along the kinematic minor axis, which might indicate a different outflow geometry. The outflow depletion times are 15–80 Myr. These are comparable to, although slightly shorter than, the star-formation (SF) depletion times (30–80 Myr). However, we estimate that only 15–30% of the outflowing molecular gas will escape the gravitational potential of the nucleus. The majority of the outflowing gas will return to the disk after 5–10 Myr and become available to form new stars. Therefore, these outflows will not likely completely quench the nuclear starbursts. These star-forming powered molecular outflows would be consistent with being driven by radiation pressure from young stars (i.e., momentum-driven) only if the coupling between radiation and dust increases with increasing SF rates. This can be achieved if the dust optical depth is higher in objects with higher SF. This is the case in at least one of the studied objects. Alternatively, if the outflows are mainly driven by supernovae (SNe), the coupling efficiency between the interstellar medium and SNe must increase with increasing SF levels. The relatively small sizes (<1 kpc) and dynamical times (<3 Myr) of the cold molecular outflows suggests that molecular gas cannot survive longer in the outflow environment or that it cannot form efficiently beyond these distances or times. In addition, the ionized and hot molecular phases have been detected for several of these outflows, so this suggests that outflowing gas can experience phase changes and indicates that the outflowing gas is intrinsically multiphase, likely sharing similar kinematics, but different mass and, therefore, different energy and momentum contributions.

First gas-phase metallicity gradients of 0.1 ≲ z ≲ 0.8 galaxies with MUSE

Galaxies at low-redshift typically possess negative gas-phase metallicity gradients (centres more metal-rich than their outskirts). Whereas, it is not uncommon to observe positive metallicity gradients in higher-redshift galaxies ($z \gtrsim 0.6$). Bridging these epochs, we present gas-phase metallicity gradients of 84 star-forming galaxies between $0.08 < z < 0.84$. Using the galaxies with reliably determined metallicity gradients, we measure the median metallicity gradient to be negative ($-0.039^{+0.007}_{-0.009}$ dex/kpc). Underlying this, however, is significant scatter: $(8\pm3)\%\ [7]$ of galaxies have significantly positive metallicity gradients, $(38 \pm 5)\%\ [32]$ have significantly negative gradients, $(31\pm5)\%\ [26]$ have gradients consistent with being flat. (The remaining $(23\pm5)\%\ [19]$ have unreliable gradient estimates.) We notice a slight trend for a more negative metallicity gradient with both increasing stellar mass and increasing star formation rate (SFR). However, given the potential redshift and size selection effects, we do not consider these trends to be significant. Indeed, once we normalize the SFR relative to that of the main sequence, we do not observe any trend between the metallicity gradient and the normalized SFR. This is contrary to recent studies of galaxies at similar and higher redshifts. We do, however, identify a novel trend between the metallicity gradient of a galaxy and its size. Small galaxies ($r_d < 3$ kpc) present a large spread in observed metallicity gradients (both negative and positive gradients). In contrast, we find no large galaxies ($r_d > 3$ kpc) with positive metallicity gradients, and overall there is less scatter in the metallicity gradient amongst the large galaxies. These large (well-evolved) galaxies may be analogues of present-day galaxies, which also show a common negative metallicity gradient.

The nature of H α-selected galaxies along the large-scale structure at z = 0.4 revealed by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey

Abstract We present the environmental dependence of color, stellar mass, and star formation (SF) activity in Hα-selected galaxies along the large-scale structure at z = 0.4 hosting twin clusters in the DEEP2-3 field, discovered by the Subaru Strategic Program of Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC SSP). By combining photo-z-selected galaxies and Hα emitters selected with broadband and narrowband (NB) data from the recent data release of HSC SSP (DR1), we confirm that galaxies in higher-density environments or galaxies in cluster central regions show redder colors. We find that there still remains a possible color–density and color–radius correlation even if we restrict the sample to Hα-selected galaxies, probably due to the presence of massive Hα emitters in denser regions. We also find a hint of increased star formation rates (SFR) amongst Hα emitters toward the highest-density environment, again primarily driven by the excess of red/massive Hα emitters in high-density environments, while their specific SFRs do not significantly change with environment. This work demonstrates the power of the HSC SSP NB data for studying SF galaxies across environments in the distant universe.

Evolution of Interstellar Medium, Star Formation, and Accretion at High Redshift

Abstract ALMA observations of the long wavelength dust continuum are used to estimate the interstellar medium (ISM) masses in a sample of 708 galaxies at z = 0.3 to 4.5 in the COSMOS field. The galaxy sample has known far-infrared luminosities and, hence, star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses ( ) from the optical–infrared spectrum fitting. The galaxies sample SFRs from the main sequence (MS) to 50 times above the MS. The derived ISM masses are used to determine the dependence of gas mass on redshift, , and specific SFR (sSFR) relative to the MS. The ISM masses increase approximately with the 0.63 power of the rate of increase in SFRs with redshift and the 0.32 power of the sSFR/sSFRMS. The SF efficiencies also increase as the 0.36 power of the SFR redshift evolution and the 0.7 power of the elevation above the MS; thus the increased activities at early epochs are driven by both increased ISM masses and SF efficiency. Using the derived ISM mass function, we estimate the accretion rates of gas required to maintain continuity of the MS evolution ( yr−1 at z &gt; 2.5). Simple power-law dependencies are similarly derived for the gas accretion rates. We argue that the overall evolution of galaxies is driven by the rates of gas accretion. The cosmic evolution of total ISM mass is estimated and linked to the evolution of SF and active galactic nucleus activity at early epochs.

13CO/C18O Gradients across the Disks of Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Abstract We use the IRAM Large Program EMPIRE and new high-resolution ALMA data to measure 13CO(1-0)/C18O(1-0) intensity ratios across nine nearby spiral galaxies. These isotopologues of 12CO are typically optically thin across most of the area in galaxy disks, and this ratio allows us to gauge their relative abundance due to chemistry or stellar nucleosynthesis effects. Resolved 13CO/C18O gradients across normal galaxies have been rare due to the faintness of these lines. We find a mean 13CO/C18O ratio of 6.0 ± 0.9 for the central regions of our galaxies. This agrees well with results in the Milky Way, but differs from results for starburst galaxies (3.4 ± 0.9) and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (1.1 ± 0.4). In our sample, the 13CO/C18O ratio consistently increases with increasing galactocentric radius and decreases with increasing star formation rate surface density. These trends could be explained if the isotopic abundances are altered by fractionation; the sense of the trends also agrees with those expected for carbon and oxygen isotopic abundance variations due to selective enrichment by massive stars.

Cosmic ray heating in cool core clusters II: Self-regulation cycle and non-thermal emission

Self-regulated feedback by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) appears to be critical in balancing radiative cooling of the low-entropy gas at the centres of galaxy clusters and in regulating star formation in central galaxies. In a companion paper, we found steady-state solutions of the hydrodynamic equations that are coupled to the CR energy equation for a large cluster sample. In those solutions, radiative cooling in the central region is balanced by streaming CRs through the generation and dissipation of resonantly generated Alfv{\'e}n waves and by thermal conduction at large radii. Here we demonstrate that the predicted non-thermal emission resulting from hadronic CR interactions in the intra-cluster medium exceeds observational radio (and gamma-ray) data in a subsample of clusters that host radio mini halos (RMHs). In contrast, the predicted non-thermal emission is well below observational data in cooling galaxy clusters without RMHs. These are characterised by exceptionally large AGN radio fluxes, indicating high CR yields and associated CR heating rates. We suggest a self-regulation cycle of AGN feedback in which non-RMH clusters are heated by streaming CRs homogeneously throughout the central cooling region. We predict {\em radio micro halos} surrounding the AGNs of these CR-heated clusters in which the primary emission may predominate the hadronically generated emission. Once the CR population has streamed sufficiently far and lost enough energy, the cooling rate increases, which explains the increased star formation rates in clusters hosting RMHs. Those could be powered hadronically by CRs that have previously heated the cluster core.
