A Novel Filter Bank and Fourier Transform Convolutional Neural Network for SSVEP Classification

Abstract. Classifying Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) is crucial for enhancing the performance of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems. This study introduces a new method for SSVEP classification within BCI frameworks, called the Filter Bank and Fourier Transform Convolutional Neural Network (FBFCNN). The FBFCNN model effectively extracts key harmonic features by first segmenting SSVEP signals into multiple sub-bands through a filter bank. Subsequently, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is applied to convert these signals from the time domain into the frequency domain. The generated spectrum's real and imaginary components are then fed into a convolutional neural network (CNN). This method improves SSVEP feature extraction and increases classification accuracy by fusing the advantages of CNNs with filter banks. Experimental results, derived from publicly available SSVEP datasets, show that the FBFCNN model surpasses traditional techniques in both accuracy and Information Transfer Rate (ITR). Offering a reliable and efficient solution for real-time brain signal decoding, the FBFCNN model represents a significant advancement in SSVEP-based BCI systems.

A new strategy based on multi-source remote sensing data for improving the accuracy of land use/cover change classification.

Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) plays a crucial role in sustainable land management and regional planning. However, contemporary feature extraction approaches often prove inefficient at capturing critical data features, thereby complicating land cover categorization. In this research, we introduce a new feature extraction algorithm alongside a Segmented and Stratified Principal Component Analysis (SS-PCA) dimensionality reduction method based on correlation grouping. These methods are applied to UAV LiDAR and UAV HSI data collected from land use types (e.g., residential areas, agricultural lands) and specific species (e.g., tree species) in urban, agricultural, and natural environments to reflect the diversity of the study area and to demonstrate the ability of our methods to be applied in different classification scenarios. We utilize LiDAR and HSI data to extract 157 features, including intensity, height, Normalized Digital Surface Model (nDSM), spectral, texture, and index features, to identify the optimal feature subset. Subsequently, the best feature subset is inputted into a random forest classifier to classify the features. Our findings demonstrate that the SS-PCA method successfully enhances downscaled feature bands, reduces hyperspectral data noise, and improves classification accuracy (Overall Accuracy = 91.17%). Additionally, the CFW method effectively screens appropriate features, thereby increasing classification accuracy for LiDAR (Overall Accuracy = 78.10%), HIS (Overall Accuracy = 89.87%), and LiDAR + HIS (Overall Accuracy = 97.17%) data across various areas. Moreover, the integration of LiDAR and HSI data holds promise for significantly improving ground fine classification accuracy while mitigating issues such as the 'salt and pepper noise'. Furthermore, among individual features, the LiDAR intensity feature emerges as critical for enhancing classification accuracy, while among single-class features, the HSI feature proves most influential in improving classification accuracy.

Improving Fault Classification Accuracy Using Wavelet Transform and Random Forest with STATCOM Integration

INTRODUCTION: Fault detection in transmission lines is critical for keeping the grid stable and reliable. This research offers a new methodology, the Wavelet Transform-Enhanced Random Forest Fault Classification System with STATCOM Integration (WERFCS-SI), to solve the shortcomings of existing fault detection approaches. OBJECTIVES: The integration of STATCOM-compensated transmission lines improves fault detection capabilities. The Wavelet Transform finds faults by analysing approximation and detail coefficients, allowing for multiresolution analysis and exact fault localisation. METHODS: Feature selection approaches, such as information gain, are used to discover and keep relevant features, increasing classification accuracy. RESULTS: Due to its ability to process complex, high-dimensional data and identify minute feature connections, Random Forest (RF) is utilised for classification tasks. The proposed approach improves RF model performance while maintaining precision. CONCLUSION: The integrated technique simplifies fault categorisation, increasing accuracy and efficiency by detecting problems in the transmission line system.

Perceptual Pigeon Galvanized Optimization of Multi-objective CNN on the Identification and Classification of Mango Leaves Disease

Aims The aim of this study is to develop a strong Multi-objective Convolutional Neural Network (MOCNN) optimized using Perceptual Pigeon Galvanized Optimization (PPGO) for accurate identification and classification of mango leaf diseases. This approach aims to increase classification accuracy, computational efficiency, and generalization ability. The ultimate goal is to improve disease management in mango crops through advanced image-based diagnostic techniques. Background Demands for the consumption of mango (Mangifera indica) fruit and its leaves were growing exponentially in all parts of the world due to its large health benefits for various organs in the human body. However, these plants were largely exposed to various kinds of microbial diseases during cultivation despite the application of pesticides. Hence, it is becoming a significant threat to the farmers and to the food industry. Objective The objectives of this study are to develop reliable methods for the early identification of mango leaf diseases, enabling prompt intervention and reducing crop damage. Additionally, the study aims to provide effective disease management applications that will help farmers minimize crop losses and maintain their economic stability. Methods PPGO is an advanced optimization algorithm inspired by the natural foraging behavior of pigeons. It integrates perceptual hashing and galvanic responses to adaptively adjust the search process, allowing for efficient exploration and exploitation of the solution space. The multi-objective convolutional neural network is trained to minimize a composite loss function that considers classification accuracy, computational efficiency, and generalization error. Results The Perceptual Pigeon Galvanized Optimization (PPGO) with a Multi-objective Convolutional Neural Network (MOCNN) demonstrates superior performance compared to traditional CNN optimization techniques. The results show an accuracy of 96%, recall of 94%, precision of 92%, and an F1 score of 92%. These metrics surpass those of existing methods such as Efficient Supervised Learning based on Deep Neural Network (ESDNN), Hierarchical Deep Learning Support Vector Machine (HDLSVM), Ordinal Regression Neural Network (ORNN), Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Local Contrast Normalization Convolutional Neural Network (LCNN), and Visual Geometry Group Network (VGGNET 19). Conclusion The integration of Perceptual Pigeon Galvanized Optimization with a Multi-objective Convolutional Neural Network offers a powerful approach for identifying and classifying mango leaf diseases. The proposed method effectively balances multiple performance metrics, leading to a robust and efficient model suitable for real-world agricultural applications.

Methods to optimize optical sensing of biotic plant stress – combined effects of hyperspectral imaging at night and spatial binning

In spatio-temporal plant monitoring, optical sensing (including hyperspectral imaging), is being deployed to, non-invasively, detect and diagnose plant responses to abiotic and biotic stressors. Early and accurate detection and diagnosis of stressors are key objectives. Level of radiometric repeatability of optical sensing data and ability to accurately detect and diagnose biotic stress are inversely correlated. Accordingly, it may be argued that one of the most significant frontiers and challenges regarding widespread adoption of optical sensing in plant research and crop production hinges on methods to maximize radiometric repeatability. In this study, we acquired hyperspectral optical sensing data at noon and midnight from soybean (Glycine max) and coleus wizard velvet red (Solenostemon scutellarioides) plants with/without experimentally infestation of two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae). We addressed three questions related to optimization of radiometric repeatability: (1) are reflectance-based plant responses affected by time of optical sensing? (2) if so, are plant responses to two-spotted spider mite infestations (biotic stressor) more pronounced at midnight versus at noon? (3) Is detection of biotic stress enhanced by spatial binning (smoothing) of hyperspectral imaging data? Results from this study provide insight into calculations of radiometric repeatability. Results strongly support claims that acquisition of optical sensing data to detect and characterize stress responses by plants to detect biotic stressors should be performed at night. Moreover, the combination of midnight imaging and spatial binning increased classification accuracies with 29% and 31% for soybean and coleus, respectively. Practical implications of these findings are discussed. Study results are relevant to virtually all applications of optical sensing to detect and diagnose abiotic and biotic stress responses by plants in both controlled environments and in outdoor crop production systems.

Refining software defect prediction through attentive neural models for code understanding

Identifying defects through manual software testing is a resource-intensive task in software development. To alleviate this, software defect prediction identifies code segments likely to contain faults using data-driven methods. Traditional techniques rely on static code metrics, which often fail to reflect the deeper syntactic and semantic features of the code. This paper introduces a novel framework that utilizes transformer-based networks with attention mechanisms to predict software defects. The framework encodes input vectors to develop meaningful representations of software modules. A bidirectional transformer encoder is employed to model programming languages, followed by fine-tuning with labeled data to detect defects. The performance of the framework is assessed through experiments across various software projects and compared against baseline techniques. Additionally, statistical hypothesis testing and an ablation study are performed to assess the impact of different parameter choices. The empirical findings indicate that the proposed approach can increase classification accuracy by an average of 15.93% and improve the F1 score by up to 44.26% compared to traditional methods.

Spectral Discrimination of Common Karoo Shrub and Grass Species Using Spectroscopic Data

Rangelands represent about 25% of the Earth’s land surface but are under severe pressure. Rangeland degradation is a gradually increasing global environmental problem, resulting in temporary or permanent loss of ecosystem functions. Ecological rangeland studies aim to determine the productivity of rangelands as well as the severity of their degradation. Rigorous in situ assessments comprising visual identification of plant species are required as such assessments are perceived to be the most accurate way of monitoring rangeland degradation. However, in situ assessments are expensive and time-consuming exercises, especially when carried out over large areas. In situ assessments are also limited to areas that are accessible. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of multispectral (MS) and hyperspectral (HS) remotely sensed, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based data and machine learning (random forest) methods to differentiate between 15 dominant Nama Karoo plant species to aid ecological impact surveys. The results showed that MS imagery is unsuitable, as classification accuracies were generally low (37.5%). In contrast, much higher classification accuracies (>70%) were achieved when the HS imagery was used. The narrow bands between 398 and 430 nanometres (nm) were found to be vital for discriminating between shrub and grass species. Using in situ analytical spectral device (ASD) spectroscopic data, additional important wavebands between 350 and 400 nm were identified, which are not covered by either the MS or HS remotely sensed data. Using feature selection methods, 12 key wavelengths were identified for discriminating among the plant species with accuracies exceeding 90%. Reducing the dimensionality of the ASD data set to the 12 key bands increased classification accuracies from 84.8% (all bands) to 91.7% (12 bands). The methodology developed in this study can potentially be used to carry out UAV-based ecological assessments over large and inaccessible areas typical of Karoo rangelands.

An Ensemble Method for the Fraud Detection in Transactions

In today's world, bank fraud has become one of the significant threats to the financial stability and security of clients of financial institutions. The development of technologies, in particular in the field of machine learning, opens up wide opportunities for building effective systems for detecting and preventing fraud in the banking sector [1, 2]. Detecting fraudulent transactions is an important task that requires thoughtful and technological solutions. One of these methods is the use of machine learning approaches and methods. This paper proposes the use of an ensemble method that combines several machine learning models at once. This approach will reduce the probability of false positives and increase classification accuracy. In addition, for the optimal operation of the model, preprocessing of the data will be carried out, in particular, their normalization, balancing of classes, as well as the selection of features. During the research, it is important not only to achieve high accuracy, but also to reduce as much as possible the number of fraudulent transactions that will be mistakenly classified as normal [3]. This is related to the business requirements of the banking sector, as each such transaction causes losses to the system's reputation, as well as direct financial losses. Within the framework of the study, it is substantiated that the use of this approach gives better classification results than single models due to the compensation of the shortcomings of each of them. The choice of this approach is also due to high practicality, compatibility with financial systems, as well as ease of integration. This paper analyzes the proposed model, its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with analogues. The ensemble method helps to combine the advantages of simple models and reduce the impact of their shortcomings on the final result. In general, the choice of software should depend on the technical requirements of the project and to obtain better results, different models and approaches should be analyzed.

Trainable Reference Spikes Improve Temporal Information Processing of SNNs With Supervised Learning.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are the next-generation neural networks composed of biologically plausible neurons that communicate through trains of spikes. By modifying the plastic parameters of SNNs, including weights and time delays, SNNs can be trained to perform various AI tasks, although in general not at the same level of performance as typical artificial neural networks (ANNs). One possible solution to improve the performance of SNNs is to consider plastic parameters other than just weights and time delays drawn from the inherent complexity of the neural system of the brain, which may help SNNs improve their information processing ability and achieve brainlike functions. Here, we propose reference spikes as a new type of plastic parameters in a supervised learning scheme in SNNs. A neuron receives reference spikes through synapses providing reference information independent of input to help during learning, whose number of spikes and timings are trainable by error backpropagation. Theoretically, reference spikes improve the temporal information processing of SNNs by modulating the integration of incoming spikes at a detailed level. Through comparative computational experiments, we demonstrate using supervised learning that reference spikes improve the memory capacity of SNNs to map input spike patterns to target output spike patterns and increase classification accuracy on the MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, and SHD data sets, where both input and target output are temporally encoded. Our results demonstrate that applying reference spikes improves the performance of SNNs by enhancing their temporal information processing ability.

Evaluation of speckle filtering configurations on Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter Analysis Ready Data (S1ARD) preparation framework on the Google Earth Engine platform for supporting rice monitoring activities

Implementing the Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter analysis ready data (S1ARD) preparation framework to Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data in the Google Earth Engine platform potentially enhances the quality of SAR data, facilitating the advancement of wide-scale, large-impact, and continuous SAR-supported RS applications such those for rice monitoring activities. Nevertheless, there is a lack of published works assessing different speckle filtering configurations available within the S1ARD preparation framework, particularly those directly associated with rice monitoring activities. This study quantitatively evaluated the performance of available speckle filtering parameters on the S1ARD preparation framework, analyzed their derived backscatter values over a rice-growing cycle, and utilized produced datasets as inputs to classify distinct classes of rice transplanting periods in two study areas by applying the random forest classifier. The backscatter analysis demonstrated that the mono-temporal speckle filtering frameworks yielded elevated backscatter values compared to the unfiltered dataset, which exhibited higher values than those derived by the multi-temporal frameworks. Furthermore, filtered datasets increased classification accuracies ranging from 9.30 - 13.95% and 17.23 - 25.94% in study area 1 and between 4.69 - 15.63% and 9.28 - 29.75% in study area 2, for OA and Kappa, respectively, than those produced by unfiltered datasets. Overall, the multi-temporal speckle filtering framework with a Lee filter, 15 number-of-image, and a 7 x 7 window configuration was recommended to apply to the S1ARD preparation framework to assist SAR-supported RS-based rice monitoring activities. Finally, the findings of this work offer direct guidance and recommendations about the behavior and contributions of Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data applied with distinct speckle filtering configurations yielded by benefiting the S1ARD preparation framework for aiding SAR-supported RS-based rice monitoring activities.

Perceptual Benefits of Linguistic Diversity and Language Background: Evidence from Auditory Free Classification of English Dialect Accents and Asian-Accented English

Non-linguistic factors leave a distinct thumbprint on our speech production that is perceptible to listeners. A steadily growing line of research demonstrates that listeners can perceive a contrast between native and non-native (L2) speakers based on accents and further classify these speakers according to dialectal variation, even when they are not native speakers of a language. Most of these studies have focused on dialectal variation within US English speakers, a combination of US and International English dialects, or L2 speakers representing a wide range of languages. Most have also featured listeners who are monolingual native speakers of the target language coming from a homogenous background, or a contrast between these and a targeted set of L2 speakers. We therefore lack knowledge of how exposure to, or familiarity with, diverse accents and languages, or specific native language competence of the native language of L2 speakers, can guide listeners’ accent perception and categorization. In this research, we employed a free classification task, presenting listeners with speech samples of native speakers with accents representing multiple English dialects, and L2 speakers of nine Asian languages across three geographic regions speaking Asian-accented English. There were six groups of listeners: monolingual US English listeners in a diverse linguistic context, monolingual US English listeners in a homogeneous linguistic context, native speakers of a non-Asian language and English (bilinguals), and native speakers of each of the three target Asian language groups who are L2 speakers of English. The results reveal that nearly all listeners are sensitive to accents capturing native/L2 contrasts and dialectal variation in English. While regular exposure to a diversity of accents results in increased classification accuracy, classification of Asian L2-accented English speakers is best performed when there is alignment of similar language family and geographic area, as demonstrated by South Asian listeners.

Klasifikasi Perilaku Pemain Game Online Menggunakan Naïve Bayes Berbasis Particle Swarm Optimization

Much research has been conducted to understand player behavior as a result of the rapid growth of online gaming. In this research, we use the Naive Bayes method optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to analyze the behavior classification of online game players. The classification accuracy value of the baseline method is 75.09% and the Area Under the Curve (AUC) value is 0.798. We use PSO-based optimization on Naïve Bayes to improve model performance. The results showed that the combination of Naïve Bayes and PSO increased classification accuracy to 95.28% with an AUC value of 0.990. This is a major advance that shows that combining the PSO algorithm with Naive Bayes can enable better classification of online game player behavior. These findings will make a significant contribution to the process of making plans that can improve the gaming experience.

An Analytical Study on the Utility of RGB and Multispectral Imagery with Band Selection for Automated Tumor Grading.

The implementation of tumor grading tasks with image processing and machine learning techniques has progressed immensely over the past several years. Multispectral imaging enabled us to capture the sample as a set of image bands corresponding to different wavelengths in the visible and infrared spectrums. The higher dimensional image data can be well exploited to deliver a range of discriminative features to support the tumor grading application. This paper compares the classification accuracy of RGB and multispectral images, using a case study on colorectal tumor grading with the QU-Al Ahli Dataset (dataset I). Rotation-invariant local phase quantization (LPQ) features with an SVM classifier resulted in 80% accuracy for the RGB images compared to 86% accuracy with the multispectral images in dataset I. However, the higher dimensionality elevates the processing time. We propose a band-selection strategy using mutual information between image bands. This process eliminates redundant bands and increases classification accuracy. The results show that our band-selection method provides better results than normal RGB and multispectral methods. The band-selection algorithm was also tested on another colorectal tumor dataset, the Texas University Dataset (dataset II), to further validate the results. The proposed method demonstrates an accuracy of more than 94% with 10 bands, compared to using the whole set of 16 multispectral bands. Our research emphasizes the advantages of multispectral imaging over the RGB imaging approach and proposes a band-selection method to address the higher computational demands of multispectral imaging.

CRE-TSCAE: A Novel Classification Model Based on Stacked Convolutional Autoencoder for Dual-Target RSVP-BCI Tasks.

The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) paradigm facilitates target identification in a rapid picture stream, which is applied extensively in military target surveillance and police monitoring. Most researchers concentrate on the single target RSVP-BCI whereas the study of dual-target is scarcely conducted, limiting RSVP application considerably. This paper proposed a novel classification model named Common Representation Extraction-Targeted Stacked Convolutional Autoencoder (CRE-TSCAE) to detect two targets with one nontarget in RSVP tasks. CRE generated a common representation for each target class to reduce variability from different trials of the same class and distinguish the difference between two targets better. TSCAE aimed to control uncertainty in the training process while requiring less target training data. The model learned a compact and discriminative feature through the training from several learning tasks so as to distinguish each class effectively. It was validated on the World Robot Contest 2021 and 2022 ERP datasets. Experimental results showed that CRE-TSCAE outperformed the state-of-the-art RSVP decoding algorithms and the Average ACC was 71.25%, improving 6.5% at least over the rest. It demonstrated that CRE-TSCAE showed a strong ability to extract discriminative latent features in detecting the differences among two targets with nontarget, which guaranteed increased classification accuracy. CRE-TSCAE provided an innovative and effective classification model for dual-target RSVP-BCI tasks and some insights into the neurophysiological distinction between different targets.

Novel feature selection method for accurate breast cancer classification using Correlation coefficient and Modified GWO Algorithm

Breast cancer is perceived as the most common cause of mortality among women globally. Early detection of this disease is critical to reduce significantly the possibility of death. Machine learning techniques have been proved to be efficient and very successful for an accurate breast cancer diagnosis. In this paper, an efficient hybrid Feature Selection (FS) method named a Correlation technique-Modified Grey Wolf Optimizer (CMGWO) was proposed for accurate breast cancer classification based on dimensionality reduction. The suggested technique is based on two stages: the feature selection step and the classification step. Feature selection is the process of picking the most significant characteristics from a dataset. This stage is crucial in machine learning. Firstly, we focus on the filter method by using a Correlation technique for dimensionality reduction. This technique is intended to eliminate and reduce the number of features by selecting one feature from the other correlated features. Secondly, we use the Modified Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm (MGWO) to locate and determine the most significant features from uncorrelated features. After that, we use multiple classifiers to classify breast cancer disease based on the selected features. The Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer (WDBC) database was used to prove the performance of our proposed work. The experimental results show that the combination of the correlation method and MGWO for feature selection increases the accuracy rate of classification with a minimum number of features. The performances of different machine learning algorithms were evaluated, including Random Forest classifier (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM) Classifier, and Naïve Bayes (NB) Classifier for the classification step. The suggested technique proves to be the best approach and reliable one among all studied approaches since it increases classification accuracy to 99.12\% obtained by CMGWO using Random Forest classifier and demonstrates its significance in detecting breast cancer.

PATH-05. MACHINE LEARNING-BASED CYTOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID IN MEDULLOBLASTOMA

Abstract BACKGROUND Metastatic dissemination occurring via the cerebrospinal fluid contributes to the poor prognosis in many medulloblastoma patients. It has high prognostic relevance, and its accurate detection is critical for adequate therapy stratification. However, cytological examination is a difficult, time-consuming task and frequently unreliable. We, therefore, propose a machine-learning pipeline to solve this diagnostic challenge. METHODS A dataset of 303 digitized images of cerebrospinal fluid preparations from 81 medulloblastoma patients was assembled. Based on these data, over 50000 digitized objects, including more than 5000 patches with tumor cells, were classified by experts into 13 clinically relevant diagnostic categories and used for training. The classification was performed using convolutional neural networks, trained with nested-cross validation and different transfer learning strategies. RESULTS The classification into the 13 diagnostic categories was feasible, with an overall accuracy of 75% on the test set and a tumor-specific F1 score of 89%. Most misclassifications occurred between morphologically similar cell types, mainly lymphocytes and activated lymphocytes, monocytes and activated monocytes, as well as tumor cells and atypical cells with borderline cytomorphology. Grouping these cytologically and/or biologically closely related groups increased the overall accuracy to 91%. Pretraining on published cytological datasets of cerebrospinal fluid and bone marrow further increased classification accuracy. CONCLUSIONS Deep learning can reliably detect tumor cells in digitized cytological images from cerebrospinal fluid preparations in medulloblastoma. Implementing explanation methods, an easy-to-use user interface and validation on additional cohorts will further strengthen the robustness of the presented approach.

Improved Identification of Forest Types in the Loess Plateau Using Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data, Transfer Learning, and Neural Residual Networks

This study aims to establish a deep learning-based classification framework to efficiently and rapidly distinguish between coniferous and broadleaf forests across the Loess Plateau. By integrating the deep residual neural network (ResNet) architecture with transfer learning techniques and multispectral data from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Landsat remote sensing data, the effectiveness of the framework was validated through well-designed experiments. The study began by selecting optimal spectral band combinations, using the random forest algorithm. Pre-trained models were then constructed, and model performance was optimized with different training strategies, considering factors such as image size, sample quantity, and model depth. The results indicated substantial improvements in the model’s classification accuracy and efficiency for reasonable image dimensions and sample sizes, especially for an image size of 3 × 3 pixels and 2000 samples. In addition, the application of transfer learning and model fine-tuning strategies greatly enhanced the adaptability and universality of the model in different classification scenarios. The fine-tuned model achieved remarkable performance improvements in forest-type classification tasks, increasing classification accuracy from 85% to 93% in Zhengning, from 89% to 96% in Yongshou, and from 86% to 94% in Baishui, as well as exceeding 90% in all counties. These results not only confirm the effectiveness of the proposed framework, but also emphasize the roles of image size, sample quantity, and model depth in improving the generalization ability and classification accuracy of the model. In conclusion, this research has developed a technological framework for effective forest landscape recognition, using a combination of multispectral data from UAVs and Landsat satellites. This combination proved to be more effective in identifying forest types than was using Landsat data alone, demonstrating the enhanced capability and accuracy gained by integrating UAV technology. This research provides valuable scientific guidance and tools for policymakers and practitioners in forest management and sustainable development.

Gray Matter Atrophy in a 6-OHDA-induced Model of Parkinson’s Disease

IntroductionMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based brain morphometric changes in unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induced Parkinson’s disease (PD) model can be elucidated using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), study of alterations in gray matter volume and Machine Learning (ML) based analyses. MethodsWe investigated gray matter atrophy in 6-OHDA induced PD model as compared to sham control using statistical and ML based analysis. VBM and atlas-based volumetric analysis was carried out at regional level. Support vector machine (SVM)-based algorithms wherein features (volume) extracted from (a) each of the 150 brain regions (b) statistically significant features (only) and (c) volumes of each cluster identified after application of VBM (VBM_Vol) were used for training the decision model. The lesion of the 6-OHDA model was validated by estimating the net contralateral rotational behaviour by the injection of apomorphine drug and motor impairment was assessed by rotarod and open field test. Results and discussionIn PD, gray matter volume (GMV) atrophy was noted in bilateral cortical and subcortical brain regions, especially in the internal capsule, substantia nigra, midbrain, primary motor cortex and basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits in comparison with sham control. Behavioural results revealed an impairment in motor performance. SVM analysis showed 100% classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity at both 3 and 7 weeks using VBM_Vol. ConclusionUnilateral 6-OHDA induced GMV changes in both hemispheres at 7th week may be associated with progression of the disease in the PD model. SVM based approaches provide an increased classification accuracy to elucidate GMV atrophy.

User-agnostic adaptation of human locomotion intent: Leveraging Teacher-Student-Learning and ensemble modeling

Wearable robot control in complicated contexts requires an understanding of human locomotion intent and behaviors. However, signals from human–robot interfaces are typically reliant on the user, leading to poor performance of the model trained on training user when applied to new end-point users. This study aims to address this problem by developing a novel Teacher-Student-Learning (TSL) approach using Heterogeneous Ensemble Hypotheses (HEH) to achieve unsupervised user-agnostic adaptation. The motivation behind using the Teacher-Student-Learning architecture is to leverage the diverse features extracted by HEH while maintaining computational efficiency. HEH reduces the difference between labeled training users and unlabeled end-point users by incorporating multiple diverse feature generators to extract a wide range of features, thereby increasing classification accuracy and reducing variance. However, this approach sacrifices efficiency due to the ensemble nature of HEH. To address this trade-off, the knowledge from HEH is distilled into a single network using TSL, ensuring precision and efficiency. The proposed approach is evaluated on two publicly available human locomotion datasets and a 2D moon dataset. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, outperforming all other methods. Tested with three datasets, the proposed method can classify end-point users’ data with an average accuracy of 98.9%, 96.7%, and 96.9% while yielding a low processing time (1 ms). Compared to a benchmark method, the suggested strategy improves the average accuracy by 1.5% and 7.2% for categorizing the target users’ locomotor modes and stabilizes the learning curves. The proposed method represents a significant contribution to the field of human activity recognition and human intent prediction for human–robot interaction systems, enhancing the efficiency and generalization capacity of these systems.

Improving golden jackel optimization algorithm: An application of chemical data classification

One of the main issues affecting the effectiveness of the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) classification techniques in chemometrics is high dimensionality. Applying feature selection is a critical procedure that determines the most relevant and important aspects of a dataset. It improves the effectiveness and accuracy of prediction models by effectively lowering the number of features. This decrease increases classification accuracy, reduces computing strain, and improves overall performance. Recently, the golden jackal optimization (GJO) algorithm was introduced, which has been successfully used to solve various continuous optimization issues. Therefore, this study proposes an improvement in the GJO algorithm employing chaotic maps, abbreviated as CGJO, to enhance the exploration and exploitation capability of the GJO algorithm in picking the essential descriptors in QSAR classification models with high classification accuracy and less computation time. Experimental findings based on four different high-dimensional chemical datasets show that the proposed CGJO algorithm can maximize classification accuracy while simultaneously decreasing the number of chosen descriptors and lowering the time required for computing. Thus, the proposed algorithm can be useful for chemical data classification in other QSAR modeling.
