Optical nonlinearity of ionic crystals and its increasing absorption optical bistability

This paper presents an approach to the intracavity interaction of electromagnetic waves with anharmonic lattice vibrations of ionic crystals. The nonlinear lattice dynamics and an expression for the nonlinear polarization are derived in terms of optical phonon modes. In the rotating-wave approximation the total coherent Hamiltonian of the system is derived. Using the corresponding equation of steady states, the increasing absorption optical bistability (IAOB), as a nonlinear effect, is demonstrated. The results show that optical nonlinearities due to the interaction of photons with various elementary excitations of bosonic type such as phonons and excitons may be the origin of IAOB, which is consistent with our previous works.

Mirrorless lasing action via nonlinear interaction between photons and bosons

We study the lasing action due to nonlinear interactions of photons with boson elementary excitation, such as phonons and excitons, and point out the distinct features from the conventional laser model described by the two-level model. External feedback by means of cavity mirrors is unnecessary for the lasing action as well as for the increasing absorption optical bistability. It is shown that the Landau theory of the second-order phase transition is applicable to the threshold behaviour of the present mirrorless laser model.

A dynamical model for the increasing absorption optical bistability

By phenomenological analysis with reference to Miller et al. [2a], a specific Hamiltonian for increasing absorption optically bistable systems is proposed and the corresponding coupled dynamical equations are derived.

Increasing absorption optical bistability in highly concentrated dye solutions

We report the results of experimental observation of increasing absorption optical bistability in highly concentrated aqueous solutions of toluidine blue dye. The thermal shift of the monomer-dimer equilibrium towards higher monomer concentration is identified as the nonlinear optical mechanism that ensures also the positive local feedback. A simple model that gives the criteria for the occurence of this type of optical bistability and which enables selections of effective dyes is presented.

Increasing absorption optical bistability operating in the front surface layer of high absorption samples

The increasing absorption optical bistability in a bulk ZnSe sample with quite high absorption has been observed. Our experiments show that the bistability operates only in the front surface layer of sample and that the back layer of sample can be regarded as a linear absorber and heat sink.

Observation of new scattering orders in degenerate four-wave mixing with semiconductors.

New scattering orders in degenerate four-wave mixing with a bulk semiconductor have been observed due to spatial subharmonic bifurcation of the laser-induced grating. For the observation, wave mixing in the Raman-Nath regime was performed in a thin platelet of CdS that exhibited increasing absorption optical bistability. A qualitative theoretical model is presented that explains the appearance of new scattering orders.

On kink dynamics in media with increasing absorption optical bistability

AbstractThe motion of the boundary between dark and light domains in a crystal with increasing absorption‐optical bistability (the so‐called kink) is considered. In the low diffusion limit the kink moves undergoing effective viscous friction which essentially affects the output intensity. The crystal boundary influence on the kink is substantial if the diffusion is sufficiently high. No jumping kink motion resulting in a sawtooth structure of the output intensity can take place in a pure crystal unless a compound material consisting of isolated semiconductor crystals is used.

Optical Bistability and Formation of Localized and Moving High Absorption Domains in ZnSe and ZnCdS

AbstractResults are given of the experimental study of increasing absorption optical bistability that arises from the formation of high absorption domains in bulk ZnSe and ZnCdS. A periodic domain motion causes output signal pulsations. The average domain velocity proved to be about 102 cm/s. A model that describes the behaviour of the absorption domain in semiconductors is discussed. Results of the experimental study of the domain behaviour are explained by the heat conduction regime of the model.

Dynamical Effects in Increasing Absorption Optical Bistability of Thermal Origin

Structure, formation, and motion of kinks in increasing-absorption optical bistability.

The spatially inhomogeneous distribution of the light intensity and of the excitation density is investigated for systems showing cavityless optical bistability due to increasing absorption. The formation and motion of spatial kink structures is analyzed in detail within a rate-equation approach. Analytical estimates for the kink formation process are presented and compared to numerical results.

Kinks: Longitudinal excitation discontinuities in increasing absorption optical bistability.

Longitudinal excitation discontinuities (kinks) that arise from partial-sample switching in increasing absorption bistability are predicted theoretically and observed in a sharp-cut color filter. The kinks give rise to a sawtooth output temporal dependence for a triangular input shape. Kinks are an emphatic illustration of the local nature of increasing absorption bistability.
