Report on climate and climate change on the East Coast of the United States

In the context of global climate change such as rising sea level, rising temperature, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions, according to the climate change of the East Coast of the United States in recent years, the report analyzes the current impact and future trends of four cases on the East Coast of the United States through relevant data and models: The damage scale of Atlantic hurricanes increases year by year, with increased vertical growth and carbon sequestration capacity of coastal wetlands, increased Vibrio vulnificus infection, and increased flood disasters. The relationship between human activities and climate change cases is explored. In the end, different specific recommendations are made based on the four major climate change phenomena on the East coast of the United States. And put forward the "forest vegetation restoration" plan, hoping to adjust the negative impact of climate change in the region through this plan.

Analysis of air temperature change trends and their impacts in Australia

Global climate change has become a major challenge of our time, affecting ecosystems, weather patterns, and human activities across the globe. In this paper, we analyze the causes and effects of climate change by looking at Australia, in particular, summer temperature trends in the Melbourne region over the past 20 years. By examining historical data and considering the current situation, this paper makes recommendations to address these challenges. The relevant data shows a general increase in average summer temperatures in Melbourne and across Australia from 2003 to 2023. The main factors contributing to these fluctuations include global climate change, human activity, and urbanization. Continued temperature increases are primarily caused by global warming, exacerbated by increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities and the urban heat island effect. The impacts of climate change on Melbourne and Australia are multifaceted, affecting public health, water management, energy demand, ecosystems, and agriculture. After analyzing Australia's overall climate, this paper proposes measures to improve it, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing urban resilience, improving public health security, protecting and restoring ecosystems, and promoting scientific research and education.

Sustainable Cycling: Boosting Commuting and Tourism Opportunities in Istria

This study explores the evolution of cycling in Istria, a region located in parts of Slovenia and Croatia along the Northern Adriatic coast, recognised for its vibrant tourism sector. The research aims to evaluate the potential of cycling for both daily commuting and tourism while examining its economic, environmental, and social impacts. The study uses secondary data from 2010 to 2023, econometric methods, and interviews to assess how cycling contributes to economic growth, regional collaboration, employment rates, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In Slovenia, regression analysis indicates that bicycle imports positively correlate with tourist arrivals, which positively influences GDP. However, VAR analysis shows that employment has a negative impact on GHG emissions. In contrast, the increase in bicycles contributes to higher GHG emissions, suggesting the possibility of greenwashing or double pollution. In Croatia, regression coefficients were found to be insignificant, aligning with insights gained from interviews. Nonetheless, VAR analysis reveals that tourist arrivals and GDP positively reinforce each other, while GHG emissions negatively affect employment. Bicycles are shown to reduce GHG emissions, and tourist arrivals are also associated with lowered GHG emissions. The study concludes that cycling holds significant potential for fostering sustainable tourism and regional development; however, the differing impacts observed in Slovenia and Croatia necessitate tailored policy interventions. The hypothesis is partially confirmed in Slovenia, where bicycle imports positively impact tourist arrivals and GDP but are challenged by increased GHG emissions, while in Croatia, the hypothesis is not supported by direct economic gains from cycling. However, bicycles contribute to reducing GHG emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation strategies in China's municipal solid waste sector under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

With the continuous increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by MSW treatment have gradually become an important environmental concern. This study developed a comprehensive ten-factor analysis framework using the generalized Divisia index method (GDIM) to decompose the driving factors of GHG emissions from MSW sectors in China and its 31 provinces from 2010 to 2022, including population, economy, consumption, and waste generation. The heterogeneity of factor contributions was discussed from both temporal and spatial perspectives to propose mitigation strategies for provincial MSW sectors. The results indicated the following: (1) GHG emissions from the MSW sector increased from 2010 to 2019, followed by a 20.7% decrease from 2019 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regionally, emissions were greater in the eastern provinces than in the central and western provinces. (2) The main positive contributors to the increase in GHG emissions were the consumption expenditure of urban households (HCE, 27.61 MtCO2e) and GDP (25.71 MtCO2e). GHG emissions per HCE (-27.31 MtCO2e) and GHG emissions per GDP (-25.45 MtCO2e) were the main factors for emission reduction. (3) The contributions of ten driving factors to each province varied significantly across different periods, with the negative effect of emission reduction factors increasing under the impact of the pandemic. The findings of this study can support policymakers in developing differentiated mitigation strategies at the provincial level to promote the sustainable transformation of waste management in China.

Assessment of trade-off, exergetic performance, and greenhouse gas impact-cost analysis of a diesel engine running with different proportions of TiO2, Ag2O, and CeO2 nanoadditives

In this study, the effects of adding different proportions of TiO2, Ag2O, and CeO2 nanoparticles to a three-cylinder, water-cooled, four-stroke, direct injection diesel engine on engine performance and exhaust emissions are experimentally investigated. The experiments are conducted at four different engine loads (10, 20, 30, and 40 Nm) and a constant engine speed (1800 rpm). TiO2, Ag2O, and CeO2 nanoparticles are added to the diesel fuel at concentrations of 50 and 75 ppm each. The test fuels used in the study are as follows: D100, DTi50, DTi75, DAg50, DAg75, DCe50 and DCe75. Using the experimental results, analyses of energy, exergy, sustainability, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission impact, and cost are performed. The experimental results reveal that the use of nanoparticles in diesel fuel reduces BSFC. The highest reduction in BSFC is achieved with DTi75 fuel, averaging 9%. Additionally, DTi75 fuel shows an average increase of 19% in NOx emissions compared to D100 fuel, while smoke emissions decrease by an average of 30%. The highest average increase in exergy efficiency compared to D100 fuel is obtained with DAg50 fuel (5.6%), followed by DTi75 fuel (5.3%). The addition of nanoparticles to diesel fuel also leads to an increase in GHG emissions. Compared to D100 fuel, the highest average contribution to GHG emissions increase is shown by DTi75 fuel (12%), while the lowest average contribution is observed with DAg50 fuel (4%).

Assessing the Biogas Potential of Slaughterhouse Waste in Tenerife: A Sustainable Approach to Waste Management in an Outermost European Region

The Canary Islands, as an outermost region of Europe with fragmented territory, benefit from an exemption under Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 allowing for animal by-products disposal in landfills. However, this practice has resulted in environmental and economic challenges, including reduced landfill capacity, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and missed opportunities for renewable energy production. Specifically, waste management in Tenerife faces significant challenges due to the burgeoning meat production and subsequent waste generation in its primary slaughterhouses. With an average annual production of 5,000 tons of waste, landfill capacity is nearing its limit. This study therefore aims to assess the biogas production potential from slaughterhouse waste in Tenerife and evaluate anaerobic digestion as an alternative approach. Various combinations of viscera, blood, and slaughterhouse sludge from cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, and chickens were analyzed to determine their biogas potential. Results indicate that comprehensive valorization of these wastes could generate 12.86 GWh of energy, equivalent to approximately 20% of the energy consumed in the municipality's industrial sector. Moreover, this approach could reduce emissions by 5.88 Gg of CO2 equivalent and alleviate landfill pressures, thereby mitigating current waste management impacts. Given the region's reliance on imported fuels and limited territorial space, anaerobic digestion presents an environmentally and economically sustainable solution for managing slaughterhouse waste within a closed-loop system.

Land use and land cover changes in Notwane watershed, Botswana, using extreme gradient boost (XGBoost) machine learning algorithm

ABSTRACT Botswana’s Notwane watershed is crucial for supplying water to Gaborone and surrounding areas. However, urbanization and climate variability threaten its water resources. Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes contribute to climate variability, impacting food security, water supply, and weakening rural economies and socio-cultural structures. This study employs geospatial techniques to model LULC changes and inform sustainable environmental management. This study utilized Extreme Gradient Boost (XGBoost), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) algorithms to classify multi-temporal Landsat images from 1984 to 2022. The XGBoost model achieved the highest overall accuracy of 0.81%. Results indicated a 21,239.2% increase in built-up areas between the year, while agricultural land and natural vegetation decreased significantly by 9.38%. These shifts are driven by urbanization, which heightens climate change through increased greenhouse gas emissions and reduced carbon sinks. Variations in water-covered areas were, influenced by dam construction, droughts, and cyclones. A strong correlation between built-up areas and population data highlights the impact of urban expansion. To ensure sustainable urban growth and mitigate negative effects on biodiversity, urban planners must integrate sustainable land use strategies. These findings highlight the necessity for informed decision-making to balance development with environmental sustainability in the Notwane watershed.

The Heteropolyacid-Catalyzed Conversion of Biomass Saccharides into High-Added-Value Products and Biofuels

The industrial processes used to produce paper and cellulose generate many lignocellulosic residues. These residues are usually burned to produce heat to supply the energy demands of other processes, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and resulting in a high environmental impact. Instead of burning these lignocellulosic residues, they can be converted into saccharides, which are feedstock for high-value products and biofuels. Keggin heteropolyacids are efficient catalysts for obtaining saccharides from cellulose and hemicellulose and converting them into bioproducts or biofuel. Furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, and alkyl levulinates are important platform molecules obtained from saccharides and raw materials in the biorefinery processes used to produce fine chemicals and biofuels. This review discusses the significant progress achieved in the development of the processes based on heteropolyacid-catalyzed reactions to convert biomass and their residues into furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, and alkyl levulinates in homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction conditions. The different modifications that can be performed to a Keggin HPA structure, such as the replacement of the central atom (P or Si) with B or Al, the doping of the heteropolyanion with metal cations, and a proton exchange with metal or organic cations, as well as their impact on the catalytic activity of HPAs, are detailed and discussed herein.

Organic Farming in India: A Dual Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Recent decades have transformed Indian agriculture from traditional methods to a mechanized system reliant on fossil fuels, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and impacting global climate. Higher greenhouse gas levels, including carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone are likely, causing the observed rise in air temperatures and leading to significant climate shifts. In most subtropical regions, a 4°C rise in global temperatures is anticipated to reduce groundwater and surface water, heightening food demand and threatening global food security. Climate change denotes long-term, significant alterations in climate measurements. A production system that maintains the health of ecosystems, soils, and human populations is known as organic farming (IFOAM 2006). Organic farming is energy-efficient and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing chemical and fossil fuel use, while enhancing soil carbon, biodiversity and fertility. It reuses plant and animal waste to restore soil nutrients, relies on renewable resources and supports sustainable, low-pollution management. Organic farming not only helps to mitigate climate change but also provides lasting benefits as an adaptation strategy. Effective nutrient management and carbon sequestration in soils are crucial for adapting and mitigating climate change across diverse temperature zones and local conditions.

Direct parallel electrosynthesis of high-value chemicals from atmospheric components on symmetry-breaking indium sites

To tackle significant environmental and energy challenges from increased greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, we propose a method that synergistically combines cost-efficient integrated systems with parallel catalysis to produce high-value chemicals from CO2, NO, and other gases. We employed asymmetrically stretched InO5S with symmetry-breaking indium sites as a highly efficient trifunctional catalysts for NO reduction, CO2 reduction, and O2 reduction. Mechanistic studies reveal that the symmetry-breaking at indium sites substantially improves d-band center interactions and adsorption of intermediates, thereby enhancing trifunctional catalytic activity. Employed in a flow electrolysis system, the catalyst achieves continuous and flexible production of NH3, HCOO-, and H2O2, maintaining over 90% Faradaic efficiency at industrial scales. Notably, the parallel electrolysis device reported in this study effectively produces high-value products like NH4COOH directly from greenhouse gases in pure water, offering an economically efficient solution for small molecule synthesis and unique insights for the sustainable conversion of inexhaustible gases into valuable products. Therefore, this work possesses considerable potential for future practical applications in sustainable industrial processes.

Climate change and lethal violence: a global analysis

Purpose The study aims to uncover the relationship between rising temperatures, increased greenhouse gas emissions and the prevalence of lethal violence, encompassing suicides and homicides. It also sought to identify how climate change affects different economic strata in countries, notably in high and middle-income nations, and across Asia and Africa. Design/methodology/approach This study rigorously explored the link between global climate change and lethal violence across 201 countries from 1970 to 2020. Climate change was measured using annual surface temperature fluctuations and greenhouse gas emissions, while lethal violence was estimated using data on suicides and homicides. Findings The analysis revealed significant positive associations between escalating temperatures, heightened greenhouse gas emissions and lethal violence. These connections were evident across different economic levels and geographic regions in Asia and Africa. Originality/value This study emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to combat human-induced climate change and mitigate its extensive negative impacts on society, particularly its association with increased violent behavior.

Modification of Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) with a Linear Polyurethane Modifier and Organic Nanofiller-Preparation and Structure-Property Relationship.

The growing demand for products made of polymeric materials, including the commonly used polypropylene (PP), is accompanied by the problem of storing and disposing of non-biodegradable waste, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and the creation of toxic products that constitute a health hazard of all living organisms. Moreover, most of the synthetic polymers used are made from petrochemical feedstocks from non-renewable resources. The use of petrochemical raw materials also causes degradation of the natural environment. A potential solution to these problems is the use of biopolymers. Biopolymers include biodegradable or biosynthesizable polymers, i.e., obtained from renewable sources or produced synthetically but from raw materials of natural origin. One of them is the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) biopolymer, whose properties are comparable to PP. Unfortunately, it is necessary to modify its properties to improve its processing and operational properties. In the work, hybrid polymer nanobiocomposites based on P3HB, with the addition of chain, uncross-linked polyurethane (PU) and layered aluminosilicate modified with organic salts (Cloisite®30B) were produced by extrusion process. The introduction of PU and Cloisite®30B to the polymer matrix (P3HB) influenced the processing parameters beneficially and resulted in a decrease in the extrusion temperature of more than 10 °C. The influence of the simultaneous addition of a constant amount of PU (10 m/m%) and the different amounts of nanoadditives (1, 2 and 3 m/m%) on the compatibility, morphology and static mechanical properties of the resulted nanobiocomposites were examined. The component interactions by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, nano- and microscale structure studies using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out, and the hardness and tensile strength of the obtained polymer nanobiocomposites were determined. FTIR analysis identified the compatibility of the polyester matrix, PU, and organomodified montmorillonite, the greatest being 3 m/m% Cloisite30B content. The addition of PU to the polyester elasticizes the material and decreases the material's strength and ductility. The presence of nanoclay enhanced the mechanical properties of nanobiocomposites. The resulting nanobiocomposites can be used in the production of short-life materials applied in gardening or agriculture.

Pathways towards sustainability: A capacity needs assessment for the implementation of the Colombian Policy for Sustainable Cattle 2022–2050

Cattle farming is one of the main agricultural activities in Colombia, but its mainly extensive nature generates significant social and environmental impacts, such as land grabbing, agricultural frontier expansion, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and deforestation. To transform cattle systems towards sustainability, the Policy Guidelines for Sustainable Cattle 2022–2050 (LPGBS) were launched in 2022, resulting from conversations between sector institutions and the national government. Although the LPGBS are proposed as the roadmap for cattle farming in the coming decades, their implementation has faced delays and raised doubts among the involved institutions. This research analyzes the current state of the LPGBS to identify difficulties and determine strategies that promote sustainability in cattle systems by building capacities. The research is based on a mixed-methods approach and contains a literature review on the evaluation of public policies in the cattle sector, complemented by 26 key-informant interviews with experts from public and private institutions involved in developing the LPGBS. These interviews provided key perspectives and practical experiences to understand current difficulties in the implementation of the LPGBS and identify the capacities needed to achieve the planned transition to sustainable cattle farming. Results reveal several difficulties in the LPGBS design stage, including institutional weakness, low governmental participation, and lack of trust among stakeholders. However, important progress was made, such as the construction of social, environmental, and productive sustainability criteria, the consolidation of the sustainability approach at the cattle landscape level, and regional participation. The capacities necessary to drive the implementation of the LPGBS include strengthening rural extension programs, access to financing, and the implementation of a traceability system for monitoring and evaluation. These findings highlight the importance of evaluating policies at early stages to provide crucial information for decision-makers and public policy formulators to correct and improve implementation processes.

Influence of the Conditions of Alkaline Pretreatment of Vegetable Raw Material before Hydrolysis in a Rotor Pulsation Device on the Cellulose Conversion

Introduction. The growing global energy demand, limited fossil fuel resources, and increasing greenhouse gasemissions highlight the need for expanded use of renewable energy sources, particularly biomass.Problem Statement. A significant drawback in the production of bioethanol is its high cost, primarily due tothe presence of hemicellulose and lignin.Purpose. This study aims to determine the effect of treating an alkaline suspension of wheat straw in a rotary pulsation device on the degree of cellulose conversion during enzymatic hydrolysis, a critical step in the productionof fuel ethanol.Materials and Methods. The raw material is pre-crushed wheat straw. The experiments have been conductedwith the use of a rotary pulsation device in an experimental plant.Results. It has been found that the combined physical effects of the discrete pulse energy input method andreduced straw particle size significantly increase the lignin extraction, from 40.0% at an average particle size of2—1 mm to 62.0% at an average particle size of 0.4—0.1 mm. Additionally, the treatment of an alkaline suspension of wheat straw at 90 оC for one hour, at alkali concentrations ranging from 1 to 4% (wt./wt.), results in anincrease in the cellulose conversion during enzymatic hydrolysis from 38% to 65.8%. Additionally, a corresponding decrease in the lignin content, from 17.1% to 3.16% has been reported.Conclusions. Increasing alkali concentration during the alkaline pretreatment of wheat straw using the discrete-pulse energy input method in a rotary pulsation device enhances the rate of cellulose conversion duringsubsequent enzymatic hydrolysis.

Implications of climate change on freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity

Global warming is a phenomenon whereby the planet's exposure to the sun's radiation worsens from the high emission of gasses believed to trap heat within the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the leading greenhouse gas majorly responsible for global warming and other related issues and is a danger to global society. This one has a particular role in portraying the key importance of the shifting climate that invariably influences water supply and agricultural production. Global warming presents complex challenges to aquatic organisms and stocks and other natural aquatic life resources. This study examines how freshwater and marine species are affected by climate change in aquatic habitats. Aquatic species' metabolism, growth, reproduction, and dispersal are all impacted by rising temperatures and altered water chemistry brought on by increased greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2. The goal is to pinpoint the ecosystems and vulnerable species that are most impacted by these changes and suggest flexible management techniques. The suggested remedies center on creating sustainable conservation strategies that lessen the effects of climate change on aquatic biodiversity and increase these ecosystems' resilience. The socio-economic interdependencies between water and climate change impact agricultural and water resources, and the pressures exerted on water bodies and water supply landscapes. Another area is related to alterations in the physical and chemical properties of the water, such as the temperature, which is a well-known effect of climate change: 'This causes abnormalities in the metabolism and physiology of aquatic species.' These alterations flow through the chain and regime of growth, reproduction, feeding habits and distribution, migration, and mass of fish and other creatures in the water system. However, the long-term effect of climate variation and climate change on freshwater ecosystems requires much scientific investigation to address challenges in aquatic ecosystem conservation and sustainability. This being the case, adaptive management solutions that address the interrelated impacts of climate change have to be applied and implemented to reduce vulnerability in aquatic ecosystems worldwide.

Water-energy-food nexus in the sustainable management of crop-livestock coupled systems

The recoupling of livestock and crop production by recycling of animal manure in croplands is urgently needed to achieve a sustainable agricultural development. However, an insufficient understanding of the resources and environmental performance of recoupling and the synergies and trade-offs among multiple sustainable development goals hinders the implementation of best management practices. Here, by combining footprint and life-cycle analyses, we distinguished two coupling degrees (semi-coupling, in which only solid manure is returned to croplands, and full coupling, which involves the return of both solid and liquid manure) and three coupling modes to quantitatively assess the influence of recoupling management measures on nitrogen (N) utilization, water and energy consumption, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our results showed that conventional full coupling (FCPC) enhanced the system's N use efficiency and reduced reactive N (Nr) loss and the water footprint by 14 and 29 %, respectively, compared with semi-coupling (SCP), the status quo in most of China's livestock farms. However, FCPC slightly increased GHG emissions, mainly because of energy-water tradeoffs. An enhanced full coupling mode designed based on the water-energy-food nexus (FCPN) reduced the energy footprint and GHG emissions by 74 and 12 %, respectively, compared with SCP. Because FCPN additionally alleviated the pollution shift effect, the water footprint was further reduced by 34 % compared with SCP. Transforming from SCP to FCPC and FCPN offered a total social benefit, which integrates resource and environmental performances, of approximately 537 and 694 yuan t−1 milk at an implementation cost of 396 and 401 yuan t−1 milk, respectively. Our research fills a knowledge gap related to the quantification of recoupling impacts on the water-energy-food nexus and provides a solution for the collaborative optimization of multiple objectives in China and other countries facing the same challenges in livestock revolution.

Assessing temporal dynamics of nitrogen surplus in Indian agriculture: district scale data from 1966 to 2017

Nitrogen (N) is essential for agricultural productivity, yet its surplus poses significant environmental risks. Currently, over half of applied nitrogen is lost, resulting in resource wastage, contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. Excess nitrogen persists in the environment, contaminating soil and water bodies for decades. Quantifying detailed historical N-surplus estimation in India remains limited, despite national and global-scaled assessments. Our study develops a district-level dataset of annual agricultural N-surplus from 1966-2017, integrating 12 different estimates to address uncertainties arising from multiple data sources and methodological choices across major elements of the N surplus. This dataset supports flexible spatial aggregation, aiding policymakers in implementing effective nitrogen management strategies in India. In addition, we verified our estimates by comparing them with previous studies. This work underscores the importance of setting realistic nitrogen management targets that account for inherent uncertainties, paving the way for sustainable agricultural practices in India, reducing environmental impacts, and boosting productivity.

Moderate Drought Constrains Crop Growth Without Altering Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics in Perennial Cup‐Plant and Silage Maize

ABSTRACTSilage maize (Zea mays L.) intensification to maximise biomass production increases greenhouse gas emissions, accelerates climate change and intensifies the search for alternative bioenergy crops with high carbon (C) sequestration capacity. The perennial cup‐plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) not only serves as a viable bioenergy source but may also be a promising soil C conservator. However, the dynamics of soil organic C (SOC) under the C3 cup‐plant, exposed to moderate drought conditions, that reduces growth rate without causing crop failure, compared with the drought‐tolerant C4 maize, remains unexplored. Here, we investigated in a lysimeter experiment the effects of moderate drought stress on crop growth and soil CO2 efflux under cup‐plant and silage maize compared with well‐watered conditions. Soil CO2 efflux along with root and shoot biomass, soil moisture and temperature as well as SOC and nitrogen (N) were measured over three consecutive years. Irrespective of the watering regime, cup‐plant induced a greater soil CO2 efflux (16% and 23% for 2020 and 2021, respectively), which was associated with higher root and shoot biomass compared with silage maize suggesting a substantial contribution of the roots to total soil CO2 efflux. In addition, soil CO2 efflux correlated negatively with soil dissolved N and positively with microbial C:N imbalance suggesting that low soil N availability influences soil CO2 efflux through processes related to N‐limitation such as N‐mining. Strikingly, moderate drought had no effect on soil CO2 efflux and C content and microbial biomass C, but increased dissolved organic C and microbial biomass N in both crops suggesting a complex interplay between C availability, N‐limitation and microbial adaptation under these conditions. Although cup‐plant increased soil CO2 efflux, the observed higher root and shoot biomass even under moderate drought conditions suggests a similar soil C management as silage maize; however, this still requires longer‐term investigation.

EFFECTS OF GUM ARABIC ON THE MOISTURE CONTENT AND WATER ABSORPTION OF LATERITIC BRICKS OF VARYING PARTICLE SIZES OF FINE AGGREGATES

The increasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with construction, accounts for 37% global emissions. In mitigating these challenges, the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) recommends the use of lateritic bricks due to it's environmental sustainability. To achieve durability and environmental sustainability, Gum Arabic is introduced in laterite soil to improve its properties. The objective of the study is to determine the suitability of Gum Arabic as stabilizer on the moisture content and water absorption capacity of earth bricks of different particle size distributions. Experimental research method was adopted for the study. The particle size distribution of the laterite soil was classified within the ranges 75µm-600µm, and 1.18mm- 4.76mm. Also, the content of the Gum Arabic was proportioned from the range of 0% to 30% partial replacements. Sample bricks were produced and tested at 14, 21 and 28 days curing period. The data collected from the results of the laboratory experiments was analysed using bar charts. The results showed that, particle size distributions for grading fine aggregate suitable for compressed stabilised earth bricks (CSEB) was found to be between 1.18mm-4.76mm considering it low extent of permeability and high durability properties at 28 days curing period. It was concluded that, moisture content influences the rate of water absorption, such that an increase in moisture content consequently increases the rate of water absorption. However, the low extent of water permeability recorded, reduces the water content in the pores of the CSEBs, thereby reducing the extent of expansion and contraction making the GA-based CSEBS to be less brittle and more durable. It was recommended that, when selecting eco-friendly bricks for construction of buildings, Gum Arabic based Compressed Stabilised Earth Bricks (GA-based CSEBs), should be utilised considering its low permeability and durability for particle size ˃ 600µm.

Challenges posed by climate hazards to cardiovascular health and cardiac intensive care: implications for mitigation and adaptation.

Global warming, driven by increased greenhouse gas emissions, has led to unprecedented extreme weather events, contributing to higher morbidity and mortality rates from a variety of health conditions, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). The disruption of multiple planetary boundaries has increased the probability of connected, cascading, and catastrophic disasters with magnified health impacts on vulnerable populations. While the impact of climate change can be manifold, non-optimal air temperatures (NOTs) pose significant health risks from cardiovascular events. Vulnerable populations, especially those with pre-existing CVD, face increased risks of acute cardiovascular events during NOT. Factors such as age, socio-economic status, minority populations, and environmental conditions (especially air pollution) amplify these risks. With rising global surface temperatures, the frequency and intensity of heatwaves and cold spells are expected to increase, emphasizing the need to address their health impacts. The World Health Organization recommends implementing heat-health action plans, which include early warning systems, public education on recognizing heat-related symptoms, and guidelines for adjusting medications during heatwaves. Additionally, intensive care units must be prepared to handle increased patient loads and the specific challenges posed by extreme heat. Comprehensive and proactive adaptation and mitigation strategies with health as a primary consideration and measures to enhance resilience are essential to protect vulnerable populations and reduce the health burden associated with NOTs. The current educational review will explore the impact on cardiovascular events, future health projections, pathophysiology, drug interactions, and intensive care challenges and recommend actions for effective patient care.
