The relationship between the cutting-edge, tool wear, and chip formation during Inconel 718 dry cutting

This study comprehensively addresses the machining of nickel alloys, focusing its attention on crucial aspects related to chip formation and tool wear. Detailed characterization of the morphology and the chip formation process was performed by analyzing parameters such as chip segmentation ratio and variables such as shear band thickness and strain rate. Additionally, a numerical model was used to quantify stresses and temperatures at the tool/chip interface and to evaluate damage, thus contributing to the understanding of the development of chip formation. A transition in chip shapes as the toothing increases is highlighted, evidenced by segmentation ratio values below 0.5, indicative of the presence of discontinuous chips. The increase in cutting-edge radius is associated with a gradual increase in the compression ratio, indicating a higher plastic energy requirement in chip formation. Numerical simulations support this theory of failure. A significant correlation of 80% was identified between flank wear and the increase in shear force oscillation amplitude, indicating that flank wear contributes to system vibration. It is also noted that the adiabatic shear bands (ASB) are narrow, revealing a marked plastic deformation in the primary shear zone. Consequently, the remarkable incidence of wear with cutting parameters on chip formation is demonstrated, affecting the cutting force amplitude and, hence, the workpiece topography.

Exploring Vortex–Flame Interactions and Combustion Dynamics in Bluff Body-Stabilized Diffusion Flames: Effects of Incoming Flow Velocity and Oxygen Content

An afterburner encounters two primary features: high incoming flow velocity and low oxygen concentration in the incoming airflow, which pose substantial challenges and contribute significantly to the deterioration of combustion performance. In order to research the influence of oxygen content on the dynamic combustion characteristics of the afterburner under various inlet velocities, the effect of oxygen content (14–23%) on the field structure of reacting bluff body flow, flame morphology, temperature pulsation, and pressure pulsation of the afterburner at different incoming flow velocities (0.1–0.2 Ma) was investigated in this study by using a large eddy simulation method. The results show that two different instability features, BVK instability and KH instability, are observed in the separated shear layer and wake, and are influenced by changes in the O2 mass fraction and Mach number. The oxygen content and velocity affected the oscillation amplitude of the downstream flow. As the O2 mass fraction decreases, the flame oscillation amplitude increases, the OH concentration in the combustion chamber decreases, and the flame temperature decreases. Additionally, the amplitude of the temperature pulsation in the bluff body flame was primarily influenced by the temperature intensity of the flame and BVK instability. Moreover, the pressure pulsation is predominantly affected by the dynamic characteristics of the flow field behind the bluff body. When the BVK instability dominated, the primary frequency of the pressure pulsation aligned with that of the temperature pulsation. Conversely, under the dominance of the KH instability, the temperature pulsation did not exhibit a distinct main frequency. At present, the influence of oxygen content and incoming flow rate on the combustion performance of the combustion chamber is not clear. The study of the effect of oxygen content on the combustion characteristics of the combustion chamber at different incoming flow rates provides a reference for improving the performance of the combustion chamber and enhancing the combustion stability.

Influence of oscillation parameters on energy distributions and dynamic behaviors during laser welding of aluminum alloy T-joints assisted with solder patch

The laser energy distribution on base material (BM) surface plays an important role in the welding quality. To reduce pore and spatter welding defects during laser welding of aluminum alloy T-joints, a circular shaped oscillating laser beam welding (OLBW) method for aluminum alloy T-joints assisted with solder patch is proposed in this paper. An energy distribution model and a dynamic model for OLBW of aluminum alloy T-joints assisted with solder patch are established to analyze the influence of oscillation parameters on energy distributions of BM surface and dynamic behaviors of molten pool and keyhole. The energy distribution characteristics are obtained by the energy distribution model and the dynamic behaviors of molten pool and keyhole are calculated by the dynamic model for OLBW of aluminum alloy T-joints assisted with solder patch. The results show that the uniformity of energy distribution is improved with the increase in oscillation amplitude or frequency. The oscillation parameters can be adopted to adjust the keyhole stability and the temperature distributions, flow velocities and morphologies of molten pool, which is of great importance for aluminum alloy T-joints welding with high quality.

Closed-loop auditory stimulation of slow-wave sleep in chronic insomnia: a pilot study.

Insomnia is a prevalent and disabling condition whose treatment is not always effective. This pilot study explores the feasibility and effects of closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS) as a potential non-invasive intervention to improve sleep, its subjective quality, and memory consolidation in patients with insomnia. A total of 27 patients with chronic insomnia underwent a crossover, sham-controlled study with 2 nights of either CLAS or sham stimulation. Polysomnography was used to record sleep parameters, while questionnaires and a word-pair memory task were administered to assess subjective sleep quality and memory consolidation. The initial analyses included 17 patients who completed the study, met the inclusion criteria, and received CLAS. From those, 10 (58%) received only a small number of stimuli. In the remaining seven (41%) patients with sufficient CLAS, we evaluated the acute and whole-night effect on sleep. CLAS led to a significant immediate increase in slow oscillation (0.5-1 Hz) amplitude and activity, and reduced delta (1-4 Hz) and sigma/sleep spindle (12-15 Hz) activity during slow-wave sleep across the whole night. All these fundamental sleep rhythms are implicated in sleep-dependent memory consolidation. Yet, CLAS did not change sleep-dependent memory consolidation or sleep macrostructure characteristics, number of arousals, or subjective perception of sleep quality. Results showed CLAS to be feasible in patients with insomnia. However, a high variance in the efficacy of our automated stimulation approach suggests that further research is needed to optimise stimulation protocols to better unlock potential CLAS benefits for sleep structure and subjective sleep quality in such clinical settings.

Study on the Consumption Mechanism and Lubrication of Mold Powder Based on Non-Sinusoidal Oscillation Mode

A two-dimensional mold model coupled multiphase flow, heat transfer, solidification and mold oscillation was established based on the casting parameters of the mold of plant. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the measured by plant and calculated mold powder consumption under the same casting conditions. The mechanism of mold powder consumption and lubrication was analyzed based on the non-sinusoidal oscillation mode, and the effect of non-sinusoidal oscillation parameters on mold powder consumption was discussed. Mold powder consumption was determined by the downward flow velocity of liquid mold powder and the thickness of liquid mold powder film, the liquid mold powder consumption decreased with the decrease of those. When the mold moved downward, the mold powder thickness and downward flow velocity decreased, the minimum mold powder consumption reached at the middle of the negative strip time, and the variation was to opposite when the mold moved upward, the maximum mold powder consumption appeared during the positive strip time. With the decrease of casting speed and modification ratio, and increase of oscillation frequency and oscillation amplitude, the mold powder consumption had the tendency to increase. The nonlinear regression equation was fitted by the Levenberg–Marquardt method combined with the universal global optimization method to evaluate mold powder consumption.

Can the Solar p-modes Contribute to the High-frequency Transverse Oscillations of Spicules?

Lateral motions of spicules serve as vital indicators of transverse waves in the solar atmosphere, and their study is crucial for understanding the wave-heating process of the corona. Recent observations have focused on high-frequency transverse waves (periods < 100 s), which have the potential to transport sufficient energy for coronal heating. These high-frequency spicule oscillations are distinct from granular motions, which have much longer timescales of 5–10 minutes. Instead, it is proposed that they are generated through the mode conversion from high-frequency longitudinal waves that arise from a shock-steepening process. Therefore, these oscillations may not solely be produced by the horizontal buffeting motions of granulation but also by the leakage of p-mode oscillations. To investigate the contribution of p-modes, our study employs a two-dimensional magneto-convection simulation spanning from the upper convection zone to the corona. During the course of the simulation, we introduce a p-mode-like driver at the bottom boundary. We reveal a notable increase in the mean velocity amplitude of the transverse oscillations in spicules, ranging from 10%–30%, and attribute this to the energy transfer from longitudinal to transverse waves. This effect results in an enhancement of the estimated energy flux by 30%–80%.

Analysis of oscillatory processes in the cardiovascular system in response to local heating in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

A comprehensive spectral analysis was used to assess heart rate variability and skin perfusion pattern of limbs in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in response to local heating and to identify significant predictors of physiological and pathological changes in the cardiovascular system. An electrocardiogram and skin perfusion on the forearm and foot were measured using Laser Doppler flowmetry at rest and during local heating in both healthy volunteers and patients with type 2 diabetes. The wavelet analysis was applied to Laser Doppler signals and heart rate variability (based on electrocardiogram signals). ROC analysis was used to evaluate significant predictors. The analysis results of patients with type 2 diabetes were compared with healthy controls. The following changes were observed in patients 1) impairment of skin blood flow reserve on the foot during heating, 2) lower amplitude oscillations in heart rate at rest and during heating, 3) an increase in amplitude of oscillations in the skin blood flow from the forearm in intervals related to respiration and heart activity at rest and during heating, 4) a decrease in amplitude of oscillations in the skin blood flow on the foot in the interval related to myogenic activity at rest and in cardiointerval during heating. The parameters of cardiovascular system (energies of heart rate variability at low-frequencies recorded by laser Doppler flowmetry on forearm in intervals related to respiration activity) with high discriminative power were revealed to distinguish patients from healthy subjects in response to local heating; these parameters can be used as markers for early diagnosis of microvascular disorders.

Modulating Li-ion battery voltage oscillations in phase field simulations

The discovery of voltage oscillations in Li-ion batteries has shown how complex phase separating electrodes can be. It is still poorly understood how electrode particles can act in this concerted manner to give out the oscillations, implying possible material behavior and applications are still undiscovered. For a systemic study in this direction, however, an initial understanding of how parameters impact the voltage oscillations is required. In this work, we investigate the roles of electrolyte mass transport and surface wetting on voltage oscillations. Using data from the mass transport investigation, it is discussed how particle phase transitioning is ordered by their radius and distance from the separator, shaping voltage oscillations at low discharge capacities. Special attention is drawn to electrode porosity, given its role in the interplay between intercalation kinetics and electrolyte mass transport, influencing the overall oscillation amplitude. At last, the oscillations were found to be greatly affected by surface wetting, with results predicting a 200 % increase in oscillation amplitude, and drastic changes to oscillation period and shape. The reason for this could be traced back to the exchange current, as this magnitude is dependent on surface Li+ concentration. The largest increase in amplitude and period was associated with a change in the intraparticle phase transitioning dynamics. The results are used to formulate recommendations to experimentalists on how to enhance the oscillatory response, and are also employed in reinterpreting previous experimental reports.

Distinct cortical haemodynamics during squat-stand and continuous aerobic exercise do not influence the magnitude of a postexercise executive function benefit

ABSTRACT A single bout of aerobic exercise benefits executive function (EF). A potential mechanism for this benefit is an exercise-mediated increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) that elicits vascular endothelial shear-stress improving EF efficiency. Moderate intensity continuous aerobic exercise (MCE) asymptotically increases CBF, whereas continuous body weight squat-stand exercise (SSE) provides a large amplitude oscillatory response. Some work has proposed that an increase in CBF oscillation amplitude provides the optimal shear-stress for improving EF and brain health. We examined whether a large amplitude oscillatory CBF response associated with a single bout of SSE imparts a larger postexercise EF benefit than an MCE cycle ergometer protocol. Exercise changes in middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv) were measured via transcranial Doppler ultrasound to estimate CBF, and pre- and postexercise EF was assessed via the antisaccade task. MCE produced a steady state increase in MCAv, whereas SSE produced a large amplitude MCAv oscillation. Both conditions produced a postexercise EF benefit that null hypothesis and equivalence tests showed to be comparable in magnitude. Accordingly, we provide a first demonstration that a single bout of SSE benefits EF; however, the condition’s oscillatory CBF response does not impart a larger benefit than a time- and intensity-matched MCE protocol.

Control of flow-induced vibration of a circular cylinder using a splitter plate

A circular cylinder attached by a rigid splitter plate of different lengths was tested to examine its effects on the control of flow-induced vibration. Tests were carried out in a closed-loop water channel. A cylinder of diameter D = 20 mm and a mass ratio m* ≈ 50 was installed to oscillate in the transverse direction. A wide range of splitter length was considered, i.e., L/D = 0–3.5, at a range of reduced velocity Ur = 1–25 and the Reynolds number Re = 800–11 000. Numerical simulations were also conducted to reveal the flow structures associated with the vibration modes observed in the experiment. It is found that, as L/D increases from 0 to 0.25, the peak value of cylinder oscillation amplitude increases and appears at higher reduced velocities. When the splitter length continues to rise, galloping-type oscillations occur at L/D = 0.5 and 0.75. The transition stage has been found at L/D = 1.0. Oscillation is then significantly suppressed when the splitter length is larger than L/D = 1.5.

Three-dimensional numerical investigation of a transversely oscillating slotted cylinder and its applications in energy harvesting

The present paper numerically investigates the fluid dynamics associated with the flow over an elastically mounted circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 500. A slit normal to the flow direction is placed at the cylinder's centre. The study covers the large parametric set of calculations for the combined mass-damping ratio $m^{*}\zeta = 0.2$ , including the slit offset for six different offset angles ( $-30^\circ \leq \alpha \leq +30^\circ$ ) measured from the vertical axis at the centre point of the cylinder and the effect of slit widths ( $0.1 \leq s/D \leq 0.3$ ) on the aerodynamic loading, vibration response and associated flow characteristics. Furthermore, a wide range of reduced velocities ( $3\leq U_r \leq 7$ ) are examined for the complete closure of studying the effect on the vortex-induced vibration response. The results demonstrate that adding the normal slit increases the periodic suction-blowing phenomena, strengthening the vortex shedding. The results suggest that the normal slit can suppress or increase vortex-induced vibration depending on the slit-offset angle. Placing it toward the front stagnation point results in the increased oscillation amplitude (with a wider wake behind the cylinder) while shifting it toward the rear stagnation point diminishes the cylinder's oscillations. The paper reveals that this dual behaviour of the normal slit (based on its offset placement) is closely related to the phase difference between the lift force and the oscillation amplitude. Various vortex-shedding patterns associated with the different slit-offset angles are duly reported in the paper. Furthermore, a magnet is attached to the slit cylinder, and its effect on the energy harvesting capability via a coil-magnet arrangement is explored in detail for a wide range of reduced velocities.

Component decomposition and spatial distribution of unsteady forces on a circular cylinder oscillated under various amplitudes at Re = 2.0×104

Vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) are of practical significance in the design of engineering structures, and the dynamic loads responsible for VIVs are thus crucial. In this study, the force characteristics of a circular cylinder undergoing forced oscillations at vortex lock-in states are investigated by employing three-dimensional large eddy simulations (LES) at a moderate subcritical Reynolds number of 2.0 × 104. Simulations of the oscillating cylinder are performed under a series of normalized amplitudes ranging from 0.05 to 0.60 at a fixed reduced velocity of 6.0. Moreover, a force spectrum-based approach is proposed to decompose the overall force into motion-induced and vortex-shedding components. Alternative insights into the spatial distribution of the force are also obtained by analysing the spanwise correlation, pressure field, and flow feature. The numerical results show that the motion-induced lifts experience an abrupt jump in both magnitude and phase as the oscillation amplitude increases. Furthermore, the motion-induced forces are almost fully correlated except in the phase-jump regime, although the correlation of the overall forces is relatively weak. Finally, the identified force parameters are successfully applied to predict the VIV amplitudes of the cylinder under various mass-damping conditions.

Microstructural evolution and performance improvement mechanism of Ti–6Al–4V fabricated by oscillating-wire laser additive manufacturing

This work proposes an oscillating wire laser additive manufacturing (O-WLAM), which is based on the wire laser additive manufacturing technology (WLAM) and combined with the laser oscillating welding technology. For different laser oscillation patterns, it shows a trend that metallurgical defects such as porosity, microstructural and columnar grain size decrease with the increase of oscillation frequency and oscillation amplitude. In solidified grains formed under laser oscillation, a complex oscillation of melt pool agitation could lead to a refining effect on the β grains size. The corresponding tendency of epitaxial growth of the prior β grains is weakened as well. The process experiments in this work provide a new idea of laser oscillation for wire laser additive manufacturing. The use of laser oscillation to achieve improvement of metallurgical defects and optimization of microstructure has some guiding significance for wire laser additive manufacturing.

Characteristic of keyhole, molten pool and microstructure of oscillating laser TIG hybrid welding

In this research, the dynamic change of laser keyhole of vertical oscillating laser keyhole was studied, and it was found that the laser keyhole depth was periodic. The keyhole depth decreased with the increase of oscillation amplitude and frequency, but the stability of the keyhole increased. This was closely related to the energy distribution of oscillating laser. The special energy distribution made the “two molten pools“ phenomenon appear in oscillating laser tungsten inert gas (TIG) hybrid welding, and the grains in the keyhole molten pool were smaller than those in the conduction molten pool. The narrow gap (NG) oscillating laser TIG hybrid welding (OL-T) was carried out, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of OL-T welding were compared with that of TIG welding and general laser TIG hybrid welding (L-T). The grain of the OL-T welding seam was refined because the OL-T welding had a lower line energy, which changed the crystalline morphology of the welding seam. The tensile strength of the weld joint was almost equivalent to that of TIG welding and base metal, reaching 559 MPa. It was observed that there was no lack of sidewall fusion in the welding seam of the NG OL-T welding, and the weld efficiency was much higher than that of TIG welding. The morphology of the molten pool in oscillating laser-TIG hybrid welding and the arc shape in the groove were collected using high-speed cameras. It was observed that the elimination of lack of sidewall fusion in NG welding mainly depended on the direct heating on the sidewall and stirring molten pool by oscillation laser.

There are numerous works studying the processes of generation of crystal lattice defects due to the fact that this process is the root cause of a change in a set of properties of a material. An atom’s abandonment of the equilibrium state always takes placeby overcoming potential barriers through a transition from a dynamic defect to a topological one. Examples of dynamic defects are fluctuations and discrete breathers. Experimental and molecular dynamics studies have confirmed that discrete breathers (DBs)can be excited in various crystal lattices, and when interacting with point defects, they can reduce the potential barrier to their migration. In this work, we model a nonlinear one-dimensional crystal with particles whose interaction is de-scribed by a linear interparticle and nonlinear local potential. DBs in quantities from 1 to 7 and with an oscillation amplitude from 0.5 to 3 were introduced into a crystal with a hard or soft type of nonlinearity. It was found that the number of DBs in the ensemble does not affect the change in heat capacity, but a dependence of the heat capacity on the specified amplitude of the DB oscillation was revealed. In the case of a soft (hard) type of nonlinearity, the value of the heat capacity increases (decreases) with increasing oscillation amplitude

Numerical analysis of flow shedding over an obstacle at low Reynolds number

This is a numerical investigation of the unsteady mixed convective flow over an isothermally heated circular cylinder. The flow is directed vertically downwards with buoyancy forces in the opposite direction. A parametric analysis was conducted at five Reynolds numbers Re=10,20,30,40,100, and for Richardson numbers between Ri=0 and 0.5, to evaluate the influence of thermal buoyancy on the instantaneous flow behaviour, vortex-shedding characteristics, thermal fields, and mean heat-transfer rates. The simulations show that at the highest Reynolds number investigated, Re=100, the normal periodic von Kármán vortex street still characterises the flow as Richardson number is increased; however, the oscillation frequency decreases and the oscillation amplitude increases. For Re≤40, a new vortex street appears, named the “Buoyancy-Opposing Vortex Street”, due to thermal buoyancy modifying the von Kármán street. Interestingly, at very low Re=20 and 10, the von Kármán street completely disappears in the heated wakes, whereas the “Buoyancy-Opposing Vortex Street” remains as the sole vortex street characterising the flow.

Numerical simulation of transport phenomena and its effect on the weld profile and solute distribution during laser welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys with and without beam oscillation

Remote Laser Welding (RLW) of Aluminium alloys has significant importance in lightweight manufacturing to decrease the weight of the body in white. It is critical to understand the physical process of transport phenomena during welding which is highly related to the mechanical performance of the joints. To investigate the underlying physics during welding and to understand the influence of beam oscillation on heat transfer, fluid flow and material mixing a transient three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) based Multiphysics model has been developed and validated from the experiments. The effect of welding speed, oscillation amplitude and oscillation frequency on the fusion zone dimensions, flow profile, vorticity profile, cooling rate and thermal gradient during the butt welding of Al-5754 to Al-6005, with sinusoidal beam oscillation, is analysed. It was found that one additional vortex is formed during beam oscillation welding due to the churning action of the oscillating beam. With the increase in oscillation amplitude, welds become wider and the depth of penetration decreases. An increase in oscillation frequency leads to an increase in the flow rate of the molten metal suggesting that the beam oscillation introduces a churning action that leads to an increase in mixing. It was highlighted that the material mixing depends on both diffusion and convection.

The effect of temperature and external force on the thermal behavior of oil-based refrigerant inside a nanochannel using molecular dynamics simulation

Heat transfer (HT) has always been one of the major challenges in engineering. Many approaches have been offered to enhance or control HT. One of the common techniques to develop the thermal performance of devices is to use nano-sized channels. This study is aimed to examine the influence of temperature and external force (EF) on nanochannel simulated samples by molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). The present study examined the effect of initial temperature (300–400 K) and EF (with 0.001–0.01 eV/Å) on oil inside the nanochannel. The results show that increasing temperatures up to 350 K increases the heat flux (HF) and thermal conductivity (TC) increase and decreases due to the increased number and intensity of atomic collisions in the structures. The HF and TC at 350 K are 946 W/m2 and 0.66 W/m.K. Also, by changing the EF from 0.001 to 0.01 eV/Å, the HF increases from 911 to 942 W/m2 and the TC by 0.52 to 0.63 W/m.K. So, with anincrement in EF, oscillation amplitude increases, and thermal performance improves. Since the thermal performance of refrigerant is noticeable in various industrial applications, it’s hopeful this study proposed an optimal mechanism in practical samples.

Numerical Investigation of Flow Characteristics in a Centrifugal Pump Impeller with Sinusoidal Flow Rates of Different Oscillation Amplitudes

This study describes the large eddy simulations of a centrifugal pump impeller considering a sinusoidal flow rate and a constant rotation speed. Five different oscillation amplitudes of flow rate (A = 0.1Qd, 0.15Qd, 0.2Qd, 0.25Qd, and 0.3Qd, Qd indicates the design flow rate) are selected to determine the influence of oscillation amplitude on the internal flow characteristics. The simulation results show that, with increasing oscillation amplitude, the alternating stall phenomenon weakens or even disappears during the dropping stage, whereas the opposite trend is observed during the rising stage. The total mean normal vorticity is insensitive to changes in the oscillation amplitude. Moreover, the difference in pressure fluctuations between adjacent passages decreases with increasing oscillation amplitude. The first and second dominant frequencies of the pressure fluctuations are mainly affected by the oscillation amplitude in the non-stall passage. The internal flow exhibits a clear hysteresis effect, and the lag time of the head increases with the oscillation amplitude. Additionally, the average head is approximately 2.38 m, regardless of the oscillation amplitude.

Finite element analysis of stress-strain state of the deformation zone of a UFG TI Grade 4 workpiece subjected to abrasive-free ultrasonic finishing

An effective approach to increasing the fatigue resistance of metal products is to create compressive residual stresses on the surface of the product using surface plastic deformation (SPD) processing. One of the effective SPD methods is the process of abrasive-free ultrasonic finishing (AFUF). Another well-known approach to improving mechanical properties including fatigue resistance is to create an ultrafinegrained (UFG) structural state in the product. This research focuses on the finite-element study of the stress-strain state of a UFG workpiece subjected to SPD by the AFUF method. Commercially pure Grade 4 titanium in the UFG state obtained by the ECAP-Conform method was chosen as a workpiece material. In the course of the study, the stress-strain state of the deformation zone was analyzed after a single indentation with subsequent unloading under the elastic-plastic scenario. The effect of the indenter oscillation amplitude and its geometry on radial residual stresses including their depth of occurrence, average normal stress and strain intensity was analyzed. It was found that as the indenter radius increases, the strain intensity (e) value decreases. The e parameter distribution has a gradient nature with a decrease in values from the surface to the center of the workpiece. An analysis of simulation results shows that radial residual stresses in the deformation zone are predominantly compressive, and, accordingly, they will increase the fatigue resistance of the finished product. It was established that as the indenter oscillation amplitude increases, the values of compressive radial residual stresses also increase. Their maximum values reach 540 MPa at an amplitude of 75 μm with the depth of these stresses up to 0.3 mm. An increase in the indenter radius, i.e. in fact the contact area, leads to an increase in the magnitude of compressive radial residual stresses with an almost linear behavior.
