Cobalt-modified digestate-derived biochar enhances kitchen waste anaerobic dry digestion: Performance, microbial mechanisms, and metabolic pathways

To achieve simultaneous in-situ high-value utilization of digestate and efficient resource recovery of kitchen waste (KW). In this work, Co-modified digestate-derived biochar (DDB-Co) was prepared for the first time, the effects of DDB-Co on KW mesophilic dry anaerobic digestion were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were elucidated. The results showed that the specific surface area of DDB-Co increased to 98.7 m2/g, which was 37.4 % higher than that of the unmodified group (DDB). DDB-Co exhibited a dose-dependent effect on biogas production from the KW dry digestion, with the optimal dose of 4.0 g/L (calculated on a solid content) DDB-Co yielding 205.3 mL/(g·VS) of biogas, representing an 80.9 % increase compared to the CK group. However, higher doses, such as 8.0 g/L DDB-Co, reduced the cumulative biogas production. Mechanistic analysis indicated that 4.0 g/L DDB-Co facilitated the dissolution of particulate organic matter and accelerates the conversion process of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in KW, thereby preventing excessive acidification. Microbial community structure analysis revealed that DDB-Co reduced microbial richness and diversity but selectively enriched microorganisms such as Lactobacillus and Methanothrix, accelerating the direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET) reaction rate and increasing biogas production. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that DDB-Co primarily upregulated the relative abundances of key enzymes in the acetate decarboxylation methanogenesis pathway, such as acetate kinase (ackA), phosphate acetyltransferase (pta), and acetyl-CoA synthetase (acs), enhancing biogas yield and maintaining system stability. The findings of this work expand the high-value utilization pathways for digestate and provide an alternative solution for the efficient resource recovery of KW.

Adaptation of Chlorella vulgaris immobilization on rice straw with liquid manure to create a sustainable feedstock for biogas production and potential feed applications

Rice straw (RS) is a widely available agricultural residue with significant potential for biogas production and feed applications; however, its poor digestibility and nutritional value limit its utilization. This study explores an innovative approach to enhance the digestibility and nutritional value of RS by cultivating Chlorella vulgaris through immobilization technology on RS, using liquid manure (LM) as an alternative to the traditional BG11 medium. The results showed an increase in chlorophyll a (Chl a) after 12 days for both the BG11 medium and LM-based treatments, from 0.13 to 0.34 and 0.24 mg Chl a/g product (DM), respectively. Additionally, the immobilized microalgal biomass increased to 284.18 and 170.14 mg algal biomass/g product (DM), respectively. Soaking under microaerobic conditions during cultivation led to the partial degradation of RS. This, combined with the formed microalgal biofilm, contributed to an improved digestibility of the dry matter, reaching 69.1% and 65.9% for the final products based on the BG11 medium and LM mediums, respectively, compared to 52.1% for the raw RS. Furthermore, the crude protein and lipids contents were significantly improved with the potential for applications in feed, reaching 21.4% and 4.1% for the BG11 medium-based product, while they were observed to be 12.8% and 3.0%, respectively, for the LM-based product. Additionally, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was significantly reduced compared to the raw RS. The higher digestibility and improved nutritional value contributed to increased biogas production, reaching 129.3 and 118.7 mL/g (TS) for the products based on the traditional medium and LM medium, respectively, compared to 86.7 mL/g (TS) for the raw RS. The immobilization mechanism and biofilm development could be attributed to the roughness of the RS and extracellular polymer substances. This study demonstrates that integrating C. vulgaris cultivation on RS with LM as a nutrient source not only enhances the digestibility and nutritional value of RS but also offers a sustainable waste management solution with potential applications in biogas production and animal feed.

Energy recovery from poultry manure in the process of semi-continuous anaerobic co-digestion with sewage sludge

In the face of significant legislative changes in renewable energy sources and conservation of natural resources, bio-waste must be managed efficiently. Developing wastewater treatment technologies generate a large amount of sewage sludge requiring appropriate use. A well-known and practiced process is the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, but due to its characteristics, the production of biogas is not sufficient enough to ensure the energy self-sufficiency of a wastewater treatment plant. Another waste whose management is a challenge is poultry manure, whose production in Poland is high due to intensive poultry farming. This study investigated the possibility of co-digestion of poultry manure and sewage sludge and its effect on increasing biogas production compared to processing sludge alone. The process was performed in two continuously stirred-tank glass reactors at mesophilic conditions, with 20 days of hydraulic retention time. In the first stage, the batch assay with sewage sludge was applied to promote the development of an anaerobic community. The second stage involved feeding the reactors on a semi-continuous regime with sewage sludge for the control sample and a mixture with the gradual addition of poultry manure from 2.5 % to 60 %. During the experiment, the most important parameters affecting the process and the quantity and quality of the obtained products in the form of biogas and digestate were monitored. The study’s results indicated an advantage of the co-digestion process of poultry manure and sewage sludge over the digestion of sludge alone in terms of process efficiency. The highest biogas production was obtained with a co-substrate ratio of 42 % manure to 58 % sewage sludge (ratio based on volatile solids). Co-digestion had no significant effect on gas quality; in both cases, the methane content was more than 60 %. Moreover, a digestate with fertilizer potential was obtained for each sample.

Acclimatisation process of biogas production from tofu industrial wastewater using biofilter in anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR)

A biofilter is a simple technology used in an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) to keep biological solids (inoculum) from being easily carried by the inlet substrate and to shorten the hydraulic retention time (HRT). The principle of a biofilter is to form a biofilm on the packed bed of the biofilter in ABR so that it contains immobilised microorganisms. This study aims to know the performance of the biofilter reactor on biogas production during the acclimatisation process. The results show biofilters shorten the HRT and effectively remove pollutants, increasing biogas production and methane quality. The total solid content decreases by around 44 %, from 0.38 % to 0.17 %. The biogas production during acclimatisation was 1806.41 L and COD removal was 95 %. The biogas composition of CH4 was 58.05 %, CO2 38.23 %, and N2 3.2 %. This study provides preliminary findings for further studies on the use of tofu wastewater as a biogas feedstock with different concentrate substrates, which is very useful for sustainability activities and improving the industry to become green.

Research on the Biogas Production Mechanism of Mudstone in the Qaidam Basin under Different CO2 Pressures.

Mudstone, a class of sedimentary rocks rich in organic matter, possesses considerable potential for biogas production. Mudstones possess a rich biological origin, which is conducive to refining the mechanisms and enrichment patterns of biogenic gas reservoirs. This has significant theoretical and practical implications for guiding the exploration and development of Quaternary mudstone gas reservoirs. Furthermore, the Qaidam Basin is an excellent place for the geological storage of CO2 due to its rich petroleum reservoir conditions. Experimental research on biogas production under diverse CO2 pressure-mudstone-microorganism-water interactions is conducted to determine the biogas production mechanism of mudstone under different CO2 pressures during sequestration circumstances. According to the results: (1) under supercritical carbon dioxide conditions, there is a slight initial increase in biogas production, followed by a gradual decrease. The periods and peaks of gas production vary among the different reaction groups. As carbon dioxide pressure increases, the gas production cycle lengthens significantly, while the gas yield declines. (2) Siderite and secondary carbonate minerals have increased in the mudstone's mineral fraction both before and after biogas production, while clay mineral groups have decreased. Specifically, there was a notable drop in chlorite and kaolinite. (3) Microorganism species in the system were analyzed, and the results showed that there was a gap in each microorganism's ability to adapt to its surroundings, and the diversity and quantity of bacteria declined with increasing pressure. After carbon dioxide was fluxed, there was a considerable shift in the pattern of biogas generation, which consequently had a major impact on the alterations in mineral fractions.

Improving the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge by adding cobalt nanoparticles

ABSTRACT This work evaluated the effects of cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) (0.025–7 mg/gVS) on the intensification of sewage sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) using biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests. This study was motivated by the need to improve the efficiency and stability of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, a critical process in waste management and renewable energy production. The effects at doses less than 2 mg/gVS were not substantial, but 3–7 mg/gVS improved the performance. The maximum biogas yield was 232 mL/gVS (at a dose of 7 mg/gVS), whereas it was 132 mL/gVS in the control (zero dose). Similarly, the reductions in the volatile solids and methane contents reached maxima of 16 and 74.3%, respectively. The analyses of volatile fatty acids, redox potential, and electron transfer system activity indicated that the addition of CoNPs stimulated the early stages of AD. Finally, acetate consumption and the increase in CH4 content suggested that CoNPs positively affected system stability and acetoclastic methanogenesis. That is, CoNPs effectively intensified the behaviour and stability of the anaerobic process. The novelty of this research lies in the comprehensive evaluation of the effects of CoNPs across a wide range of doses on sewage sludge AD, providing new insights into the optimisation of this process for increased biogas production and organic matter reduction.

Disintegration of lignocellulosic material through visible light SiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for biogas generation

This study presents the synthesis of g-C3N4 and the fabrication of SiO2/g-C3N4 via the hydrothermal polycondensation method, serving as a highly efficient visible light activated photocatalyst for enhancing anaerobic digestion and biogas production from rice straw through pretreatment at various time intervals. The efficacy of the pretreatment was evaluated using a range of analytical techniques, including XRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDX, and UV–vis analysis. The results showcased a remarkable 81 % reduction in silica content compared to untreated rice straw, along with a significant 121 % increase in biogas production. The study demonstrate that the 7-h treatment duration facilitates the highest silica reduction and biogas yield. These findings underscore the immense potential of SiO2/g-C3N4 as a promising catalyst for rice straw pretreatment, thereby leading to enhanced biogas production during anaerobic digestion.

Additives Improving the Efficiency of Biogas Production as an Alternative Energy Source—A Review

Additives for anaerobic digestion (AD) can play a significant role in optimizing the process by increasing biogas production, stabilizing the system, and improving digestate quality. The role of additives largely boils down to, among others, enhancing direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between microbial communities, resulting in improved syntrophic interactions, adsorption of toxic substances that may inhibit microbial activity, improving microbial activity, and increasing process stability and accelerating the decomposition of complex organic materials, thereby increasing the rate of hydrolysis. Through the aforementioned action, additives can significantly affect AD performance. The function of these materials varies, from enhancing microbial activity to maintaining optimal conditions and protecting the system from inhibitors. The choice of additives should be carefully tailored to the specific needs and conditions of the digester to maximize benefits and ensure sustainability. In light of these considerations, this paper characterizes the most commonly used additives and their combinations based on a comprehensive review of recent scientific publications, including a report on the results of conducted studies. The publication features chapters that describe carbon-based conductive materials, metal oxide nanomaterials, trace metal, and biological additives, including enzymes and microorganisms. It concludes with the chapters summarising reports on various additives and discussing their functional properties, as well as advantages and disadvantages. The presented review is a substantive and concise analysis of the latest knowledge on additives for the AD process. The application of additives in AD is characterized by great potential; hence, the subject matter is very current and future-oriented.

Co-digestion of Sewage Sludge and Biowaste for Biogas Production, GHG Avoided Emissions, and Profitable Carbon Credit Development

In Estonia, where biowaste comprises a significant portion of municipal waste, efficient waste management strategies are essential. Co-digestion presents a promising avenue to enhance biogas yield and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study explores the potential of co-digesting sewage sludge and biowaste for biogas production, emphasizing carbon credit calculation and offset project development. Sewage sludge was effectively utilized as a co-feedstock for the co-digestion process, contributing to increased biogas production. In Narva City, 20,401.08037 m3 /year of biogas was produced in 2012, facilitating the generation of electricity from renewable sources and thus reducing GHG emissions, which facilitates the calculation of carbon credits. We developed a robust carbon offset project based on the biogas volume, meeting additionality criteria and demonstrating long-term benefits. The revenue potential from carbon credits ranged from 118 EUR to 41300 EUR, depending on market prices and project attributes. Moreover, the offset project and calculated carbon credits offer tangible benefits to sustainable waste management and the implementation of the circular economy. By valorizing sewage sludge and biowaste through anaerobic digestion, the project contributes to waste diversion from landfills, reduces methane emissions, and promotes renewable energy generation. This integrated approach aligns with principles of sustainable waste management and supports the transition towards a circular economy model. Our findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders interested in leveraging anaerobic digestion for renewable energy production and carbon mitigation.

Process stability in anaerobic Digestion: Unveiling microbial signatures of full-scale reactor performance

Anaerobic digestion is responding to the growing demand for sustainability by exploring alternatives for methane production through renewable processes. The target is to implement stable production systems at industrial scale that can accommodate heterogeneous feedstocks with seasonal or intermittent availability. In this study, we investigated the microbiomes of six full-scale biogas plant digesters, operated under continuous production with distinct feedstock and varying operating parameters, by monitoring multiple time points over an 18-month period. This time-course experiment analyzed 114 Metagenome-Assembled Genomes alongside physico-chemical assessments to identify common and plant-specific indicators for operational management. Results identify a Limnochordia and a Dysgonomonadaceae bacteria, as well as Candidatus Methanoculleus thermohydrogenotrophicum, as widespread and potentially desirable components of the microbiota for resilient digestion of varying waste, including the peculiar olive pomace. The abundance of individual taxonomic groups and their reconstructed metabolic pathways aligned with the availability of their fermentation substrates, finding a prevalence of beta-oxidizing bacteria with lipid-rich olive pomace. Monitoring through perturbation events revealed possible causative and remediative microbiological factors, in particular Methanosarcina flavescens and Candidatus Syntrophosphaera thermopropionivorans could contribute to restoration of reactor performance. This work showcases relationships between digester operation and its microbiome, supporting microbial monitoring as a tool to increase biogas production efficiency.

Anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure and microalgae to increase biogas production: A sustainable bioenergy source

The biogas production from microalgae has gained attention due to fast depleting of fossil fuels and oil reserves. This study evaluated the anaerobic co-digestion of microalgae in various concentrations with cow manure to enhance biogas production. The biogas production of each experiment was measured using the water displacement method. The results indicated that the addition of microalgae significantly enhanced biogas production. Particularly, high methane yield of Anabaena sp. 50 %, Chlorella sp. 50 %, control was 345 ± 2.88 mL CH4/g VS, 297.96 ± 0.49 mL CH4/g VS, 138.32 ± 0.50 CH4/g VS respectively. The slurry produced by 50 % Anabaena sp. biogas plant exhibited the greatest level of seed germination. The current study demonstrated that Sorgham bicolor had the highest seed germination rate (94.2 %) root and shoot length of all crops. Therefore, it is possible to employ Anabaena sp. (50 %) and Chlorella sp. (50 %) in the rapid production of biogas. Moreover, agricultural output would be increased by using biogas slurry.

Resource recovery and contaminants of emerging concern mitigation by microalgae treating wastewater

This study aimed to investigate the recovery of agricultural biostimulants and biogas from microalgae treating wastewater, in the framework of a circular bioeconomy. To this end, municipal wastewater was treated in demonstrative raceway ponds, and microalgal biomass (Scenedesmus sp.) was then harvested and downstream processed to recover biostimulants and biogas in a biorefinery approach. The effect of microalgal biostimulants on plants was evaluated by means of bioassays, while the biogas produced was quantified in biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests. Furthermore, the fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) over the process was also assessed. Bioassays confirmed the biostimulant effect of microalgae, which showed gibberellin-, auxin- and cytokinin-like activity in watercress seed germination, mung bean rooting, and wheat leaf chlorophyll retention. In addition, the downstream process applied to raw biomass acted as a pre-treatment to enhance anaerobic digestion performance. After biostimulant extraction, the residual biomass represented 91% of the methane yield from the raw biomass (276 mLCH4·g−1VS). The kinetic profile of the residual biomass was 43% higher than that of the unprocessed biomass. Co-digestion with primary sludge further increased biogas production by 24%. Finally, the concentration of CECs in wastewater was reduced by more than 80%, and only 6 out of 22 CECs analyzed were present in the biostimulant obtained. Most importantly, the concentration of those contaminants was lower than in biosolids that are commonly used in agriculture, ensuring environmental safety.

Pelletized Straw for Biogas Production—Substrate Characterization and Methane Formation Potential

The use of agricultural residues in biogas plants is becoming increasingly important, as they represent an efficient and sustainable substrate alternative. Pelletizing straw can have positive effects on transportation, handling, and biogas production. In this study, different grain straw pellets from mobile and stationary pelleting plants in Germany as well as the corresponding untreated straw were characterized and investigated for their suitability for anaerobic digestion (AD). Therefore, tests on the biochemical methane potential (BMP) and the chemical–physical characterization of unpelletized straw and straw pellets were carried out. The characterization of the pellets and the straw revealed a high average total solid content of 91.8% for the industrially produced straw pellets and of 90.8% for the straw. The particle size distribution within the tested pellet samples varied greatly depending on the pelleting process and the pre-treatment of the straw. In addition, a high C/N ratio of 91:1 on average was determined for the straw pellets, whereas the average higher heating value (HHV) content of the pellets was 17.58 MJ kg−1. In the BMP tests, the methane production yields ranged from 260–319 normal liter (NL) CH4 kg−1 volatile solids (VS) for the straw pellets and between 262 and 289 NL CH4 kg−1 VS for the unpelletized straw. Overall, pelleting increases the methane yield on average from 274 to 286 NL CH4 kg−1 VS, which corresponds to an increase in methane yield of 4.3%. Based on the results, the feasibility of using straw pellets for AD could be confirmed, which can facilitate the possibility of increased biogas production from agricultural residues such as straw pellets and thus make the substrate supply more sustainable.

Temperature Control Effect on Cheese Whey Anaerobic Digestion with Low-Cost Tubular Digesters

Cheese whey (CW) is a worldwide abundant by-product of the cheese industry, which can be used for biogas production if further processing is not performed to produce other valuable food products. This study evaluates biogas production from CW in low-cost, tubular reactors, thus comparing the effect of temperature control. CW was monodigested in two tubular reactors at the pilot scale: one of them with temperature control (30 ± 3 °C) and the other one working at environmental conditions. The results show that CW could be monodigested in pilot scale tubular reactors, thus yielding high methane. Temperature control (30 ± 3 °C) at the pilot scale led to higher methane yields under all tested operating conditions, thus reaching 565.8 ± 20.9 L kg−1VS at an Organic Loading Rate (OLR) of 0.416 ± 0.160 kgVS L−1 d−1, which was higher than the maximum yield obtained without temperature control (445.6 ± 21.9 L kg−1VS) at 0.212 ± 0.020 kgVS L−1 d−1. Methane yield differences were attributed to the increase in temperature, thus leading to a more stable process and a higher degradation capacity. The increase in temperature is only worthwhile if adequate thermal insulation is used between the digester and the soil; otherwise, the increase in biogas production will not meet the digester’s heat demand. The anaerobic monodigestion of CW in low-cost tubular reactors is a promising alternative for CW valorization, thus leading to high biogas yields, which can be used in several energy applications replacing fossil fuels.

Prolonging the time of manure by water soaking can alleviate the inhibition of lime disinfection wastewater in a batch anaerobic digestion of swine manure

The African swine fever poses significant challenges for swine farms using lime-based disinfectants, leading to pronounced inhibition of anaerobic digestion systems due to the influx of lime disinfection wastewater. This study focuses on treating swine manure containing lime through water soaking (2d, 4d, 6d, 8d) before biogas digestion. An 8-day water soaking period significantly reduces Ca2+ and PO43--P concentrations by 20.36 % and 56.79 %, respectively. Batch tests show enhanced performance, with T1, T2, T3, and T4 witnessing increases in biogas production of 25.73 %, 114.36 %, 119.59 %, and 181.83 %, and Ca2+ sedimentation rates escalating by 6.59 %, 13.47 %, 28.94 %, and 35.64 %, respectively, compared to the control group (CK). In continuous tests, the pre-treated sample C1 maintains Ca2+ at 4.1 g/L, leading to a 104.86 % increase in biogas production compared to the control group. The study advocates extending water soaking durations as a strategy to mitigate lime disinfectant inhibition in swine manure anaerobic digestion systems, highlighting its potential for enhancing acidification, hydrolysis, and ultimately, the efficiency of biogas production.

Bibliometric Analysis: Use of Agricultural Waste in the Generation of Electrical Energy

Scientific reports have diversified enormously in the various thematic areas of the scientific world, generating errors and biases in the searches and directing the various investigations. For this reason, this article provides an approach, from the point of view of bibliometric analysis, to reveal the trends of agricultural waste for its potential use as fuel in generating electrical energy. This research has used the programs RStudio, VosViewer, and Excel for the compilation and analysis of data, whose data were extracted from Scopus during the period from 2013 to 15 March 2024, filtering all types of publications that were not original articles and English language. Scientific reports have found that biodigesters are constantly evolving, improving valves, studying and analyzing different types of agricultural waste, and using microorganisms to accelerate the fermentation process of agricultural waste. The terms biogas (330 occurrences), anaerobic digestion (214 occurrences), and agriculture (212 occurrences) were the words with the highest occurrences. At the same time, the author that stood out was Liu Y., who had an H index of 6 and 117 citations in his six articles published in the Scopus database. Moreover, China (1900 citations) was the country with the highest citation numbers, followed by the United States (1060 citations) and India (967 citations). The designs of biogas production increase efficiency and can increase biodigesters’ performance. The research also reveals the different types of development and trends that stood out and emerged in the last decade, such as the authors who have had the most impact on this topic that has recently emerged and the countries that have obtained the most significant number of publications on the topic.

Enhancing anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass by mechanical cotreatment

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to increase the accessibility and accelerate the breakdown of lignocellulosic biomass to methane in an anaerobic fermentation system by mechanical cotreatment: milling during fermentation, as an alternative to conventional pretreatment prior to biological deconstruction. Effluent from a mesophilic anaerobic digester running with unpretreated senescent switchgrass as the predominant carbon source was collected and subjected to ball milling for 0.5, 2, 5 and 10 min. Following this, a batch fermentation test was conducted with this material in triplicate for an additional 18 days with unmilled effluent as the ‘status quo’ control.ResultsThe results indicate 0.5 – 10 min of cotreatment increased sugar solubilization by 5– 13% when compared to the unmilled control, with greater solubilization correlated with increased milling duration. Biogas concentrations ranged from 44% to 55.5% methane with the balance carbon dioxide. The total biogas production was statistically higher than the unmilled control for all treatments with 2 or more minutes of milling (α = 0.1). Cotreatment also decreased mean particle size. Energy consumption measurements of a lab-scale mill indicate that longer durations of milling offer diminishing benefits with respect to additional methane production.ConclusionsCotreatment in anaerobic digestion systems, as demonstrated in this study, provides an alternative approach to conventional pretreatments to increase biogas production from lignocellulosic grassy material.

Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Cattle Manure with Ruminal Waste to Increase Biogas Production

Cattle manure (CM) is mostly used as an inoculum in order to start-up of agricultural biogas plants or as a co-substrate in the anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic content. Rumen fluid microbiota is also considered to be effective in lignocellulose digestion. It is known that microorganisms in the ruminal waste facilitate the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic structures. However, there are few studies on the inoculum effect of rumen microorganisms on bioreactor performances when rumen content is used as co-substrate and inoculum together with cattle manure, and it is not clear how rumen waste can be used in various anaerobic digestion systems. In this study, biogas production efficiencies obtained from lignocellulosic content in mono and cosubstrate (1:1 and 1:2 Volatile Solids) bioreactors formed by using ruminal waste (RW) and CM microbial communities were investigated. In order to determine the biogas production efficiencies, biomethane potential (BMP) experiments that simulate anaerobic digestion process conditions in a laboratory environment were applied. Treatment with 50% application of RW cosubstrate, 65.51% biogas and 70.64% methane production efficiency increases were achieved compared to monosubstrate CM bioreactor.

Use of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors for Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Dairy and Meat Industry By-Products for Biogas Production

The dairy and meat industries generate thousands of tons of organic waste and by-products each year, making them two of the least environmentally sustainable sectors. Typical waste includes not only processing by-products such as curds but also commercial products that are defective or unsaleable due to expiration or damaged packaging. This study aimed to evaluate the methanogenic potential of a mixture of 80% inedible curds and 20% expired sausages, as a substrate, using two continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR). The reactors were fed daily with increasing doses of the 80–20% mixture and an organic loading rate ranging from 0.31 gVS/litre/day at the beginning of the trials to 7.20 gVS/litre/day toward the end. The produced biogas was continuously analysed from both quantitative and qualitative point of view. Also, the process was continuously monitored by withdrawing samples from each reactor during the whole process, to analyse their physical–chemical parameters, including pH, total solids (TS), total volatile solids (TVS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total volatile fatty acids (VFA). The results of this study show a promising increase in biogas production with the increase in feed. In terms of biogas production, organic waste from the dairy and meat industry shows the potential to be exploited as a substrate to produce biomethane. Indeed, in this study, biomethane cumulative production reached 410.86 NLCH4∙gTVS−1 using an 8 L capacity reactor filled up to 6 L. This makes the tested by-products usable as a renewable energy source in the future, particularly within a circular economy approach, helping to mitigate the effects of global warming and addressing sustainable development goals.

Nanotechnology boosts the production of clean energy via nanoparticle addition in anaerobic digestion

Biogas production via anaerobic digestion is an established and robust technology that produces energy and recycles nutrients. Several biotechnological attempts have been applied to this process to increase biogas production, including adding nanoparticles, but several discrepancies have been reported. To elucidate the contradictory results, we performed a literature review followed by a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of adding natural nanoparticles to biogas sludge. Our results showed that adding nanoparticles can increase biogas production by up to two orders of magnitude. Considering that, we attribute these results to variability in the nanoparticles applied, leading to less reliable, consistent, and even contradictory results. We observed that the magnetite nanoparticles are the most tested ones with the most promising positive effects. In addition, we observed that concentrations of nanoparticles higher than 100 mg/L can have adverse effects, with an overall decrease in biogas production. The findings in this study highlight the need for a proper characterization of the nanomaterials type and concentration applied to the process to understand the interactions and effects on the microbial communities and dynamics that lead to an overall increase or decrease in biogas yield.
