Influence of graphene nanoplatelets on the passivation and corrosion resistance of carbon steel bars in ordinary portland cement mortar

This study investigates the influence of adding graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) to mortar mixtures on the corrosion behavior of embedded carbon steel rebars. Mortar mixtures were prepared with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.42 and GNP replacement levels of 0, 0.05, and 1 percent by weight of cement. After 28 days of curing in an environmental chamber, the passivity and kinetics of chloride induced corrosion initiation for the rebars were studied using a suite of electrochemical tests. The results suggest that incorporating GNPs at low concentrations may enhance the passivity and resistance to chloride-induced corrosion of carbon steel rebars; however, due to the large variability in the data, the findings are inconclusive. Potentiodynamic measurements revealed that the estimated average polarization resistance of steel rebars in 0 G (no GNP), 0.05 G, and 1 G specimens in the passive state was on average −182.3, −276.5, and −304.2 kΩ, respectively. Upon exposure to chloride solution, 0 G specimens, with an average corrosion potential of −600 mV vs. SCE, exhibited the lowest resistance, whereas 0.05 G specimens, with an average of −491 mV vs. SCE, showed the highest corrosion resistance. Results from electrical impedance spectroscopy were consistent with the potentiodynamic findings. Surface characterization also revealed that the inclusion of GNPs does not alter the surface roughness of the interface between steel rebar and paste. However, the interface between rebar ribs and mortar paste had higher surface roughness and porosity in all specimens regardless of GNPs replacement level. Visual inspections confirmed that the area around the rebar ribs at the interface is more conducive to the formation of crevice and pitting corrosion.

Graphene Nanoplatelet Induced Microphase Separation in Poly(ether-block-amide)s

The inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) in segmented block copolymers offers a route to manipulate microphase separation for tailoring the mechanical properties of thermoplastic elastomers. GNP loading, lateral size, surface chemistry, interactions with the copolymer hard (HS) and soft (SS) segments and the relative ratio of HS:SS determine the mechanical properties achievable. To test this hypothesis, two different GNPs with similar surface chemistry but which differed in lateral dimensions by one order of magnitude (GNP1, ∼2μm and GNP2, ∼20μm) were melt mixed with three different poly(ether-block-amide)s (PE-b-A)s with variable HS and SS content from high to low. The inclusion of the larger lateral sized GNP2 had a more pronounced effect on PE-b-A morphology as it was more effective at hindering SS chain mobility resulting in microphase separation and suppression of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PE-b-A with the largest SS content. At low loadings GNP2 preferentially locates to the HS region, inducing reorganisation of this phase resulting in increased microphase separation. Strain induced crystallisation (SIC) phenomena were also observed for the lowest HS content PE-b-A, behaviour not evident for the PE-b-A with the largest HS content as the SS are not long enough to allow SIC. Inclusion of GNP2 to the PE-b-A with the largest HS content resulted in the largest increase in Young’s modulus (E) of 46%, tensile strength (σ) of 37% and elongation at break (ε) of 53% relative to the unfilled polymer.

Enhancing Wear Resistance and Mechanical Behaviors of AA7020 Alloys Using Hybrid Fe3O4-GNP Reinforcement

This study investigates the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and milling duration on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of the AA7020 alloy reinforced with Fe3O4 and GNP. The composites were prepared with a fixed 10 wt.% Fe3O4 and varying GNP contents (0.5 and 1 wt.%) using high-energy ball milling for 4 and 8 h, followed by hot pressing. The aim was to enhance the performance of the AA7020 alloy for potential use in defense, automotive, aviation, and space applications, where superior mechanical properties and wear resistance are required. The results showed that the incorporation of 0.5 wt.% GNP and optimized milling significantly improved the composite’s performance. The AA7020 + 10 wt.% Fe3O4 + 0.5 wt.% GNP composite achieved the highest density (99.70%) when milled for 4 h. Its hardness increased with both the inclusion of GNP and extended milling duration, with the composite milled for 8 h exhibiting the highest hardness value (149 HBN). The tensile strength also improved, with the composite milled for 4 h showing a 28% increase (292 MPa) compared with the unreinforced alloy. Additionally, the friction coefficient decreased with GNP content and milling duration, with the composite milled for 8 h showing a 26% reduction. Wear resistance was notably enhanced, with the composite milled for 8 h exhibiting the lowest specific wear rate (7.86 × 10−7 mm3/Nm).

Carbon-graphene-epoxy sandwich dielectric for improved dielectric response to humidity

A sandwich structure of carbon-epoxy laminate with graphene nanoplatelets is used for increasing the AC conductivity, dielectric constant and sensitivity towards moisture. The Quasi Fickian distribution of moisture absorption of epoxy is retained with the inclusion of carbon fibers and graphene nanoplatelets of 1 weight percent. The effect of relative humidity (RH) over a range of 30–90% on AC conductivity and capacitance has been investigated. Use of carbon fibers with graphene nanoplatelets significantly enhances the electrical conductivity and dielectric constant as compared to carbon-epoxy laminate without graphene nanoplatelets. The two parameters reveal linear dependence on humidity in the low frequency range of 100–1000 Hz. The AC conductivity increases at the rate of 2 nSm−1/% RH in laminate with carbon fiber and it increases to 50 nSm−1/%RH with the incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets. The increase in AC conductivity from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz is in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 μS/m with carbon fibers and it increases from 1 to 4 μS/m with the inclusion of graphenenanoplatelets. Increase is AC conductivity from 1 kHz to 10 MHz is by five orders of magnitude, with a steep increase around 5 MHz in both laminates. The incorporation of graphenenanoplatelets helps to increase the dielectric constant by 2.4–2.8 times as compared to epoxy with carbon fiber. The swelling in the laminates estimated after 96 h of exposure to 90% RH is observed to be less than 0.05%. The use of graphenenanoplatelets improves moisture sensitivity of the carbon-epoxy laminate.

Assessment of the Mechanical Properties of High Strength Mortar Incorporating Silica Fume and Graphene Nanoplatelets: Experimental and Mathematical Modeling

Cement-based mortar is recognized as a popular and cost-effective material for the rehabilitation and repair of reinforced concrete structures. However, the development of high-performance cement-based mortar is in high demand in order to not only enhance compressive strength but also to prolong the mortar lifespan and minimize maintenance costs as much as possible. In the current study, high-strength mortars incorporating both silica fume and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were investigated and evaluated based on compressive and flexural strength. The graphene powder was added in amounts ranging from 0.5% to 2%, by cement weight, while silica fume was added as a partial replacement for cement (10%). The optimal content of the graphene was determined using response surface methodology (RSM). In addition, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to assess the proposed mortar at the micro-scale level. The outcome revealed that the graphene-based mortar imparted superior mechanical properties compared to the control mixture. The compressive and flexural strength of the mortars containing 10% silica fume and 1% graphene increased by 33% and 35%, respectively. This positive result was attributed to the refinement of the nanopores and tiny cracks by the inclusion of GNPs, which was supported by microstructure testing. The RSM model was also shown to be capable of optimizing and predicting compressive and flexural strength with less error. It is possible to conclude that graphene-based high-strength mortar will serve as a sustainable material in the near future.

Superior magnetodielectric properties of CoZnNd ferrites/GNPs composite materials for potential applications

This research explores the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on structural, electrical, magnetic and dielectric properties along with surface morphology of CoZnNd ferrites (CZNF), synthesized through sol-gel auto combustion route. The results exhibited that CZNF particles were dispersed on GNPs, which modified the structural and electromagnetic characteristics of CZNF. Moreover, SEM micrographs revealed the reduction in agglomeration with inclusion of GNPs. Additionally, resistivity was increased in the ferro region and decreased in the para region with rising temperature. TCR for CZNF/2.5 wt %GNPs composite was recorded as −3.49% at 371 K. Excellent magnetodielectric properties were observed for CZNF/2.5 wt %GNPs composite, i.e. Ms = 141.76 emu/g and Hc = 81.2 Oe along with minimum Tan δm and skin depth. On the basis of studied parameters, CZNF/2.5 wt %GNPs composite is appropriate for high frequency micro wave shielding applications, inductors, filters, bolometers and switching devices.

Enhancement of Bonding and Mechanical Performance of Epoxy Asphalt Bond Coats with Graphene Nanoplatelets.

Improving bonding and mechanical strengths is important for the application of bond coats used in the construction of steel deck bridges. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are attractive nanofillers for polymer modification because of their low cost, ultra-high aspect ratio, and extraordinary thermal and mechanical performance. In this paper, GNPs were used to reinforce the epoxy asphalt bond coat (EABC). The morphology, viscosity-time behavior, contact angle, dynamic mechanical properties, and mechanical and bonding strengths of GNP-reinforced EABCs were investigated using laser confocal microscopy, a Brookfield rotational viscometer, a contact angle meter, dynamic mechanical analysis, a universal test machine, and single-lap shear and pull-off adhesion tests. GNP dispersed non-uniformly in the asphalt phase of EABC. The viscosity of the neat EABC was lowered with the inclusion of GNPs and thus the allowable construction time was extended. The existence of GNPs enhances the hydrophobicity of the neat EABC. When adding more than 0.2% GNP, the storage modulus, crosslinking density and glass transition temperatures of both asphalt and epoxy of the neat EABC increased. The mechanical and bonding properties of the neat EABC were greatly enhanced with the incorporation of GNPs. Furthermore, the mechanical and bonding strengths of the modified EABCs increased with the GNP content. GNP-reinforced EABCs can be utilized in the pavement of long-span steel bridges with long durability.

Plasma-enabled superhydrophobic coatings on mild steel

This work demonstrates a new pathway to the direct on-surface fabrication of a superhydrophobic surface coating on mild steel. The coating was formed using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to convert a liquid small-molecule precursor (1,2,4-tricholorobenzene) to a solid film via plasma-assisted on-surface polymerization. Plasma treatments were performed under a nitrogen atmosphere with a variety of power levels and durations. Samples were analysed by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF–SIMS), Raman spectroscopy, optical profilometry, contact angle measurement, and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Wettability of the films varied with the plasma parameters, and through the inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets in the precursor. High-dose plasma exposures of the nanoplatelet-containing precursor created superhydrophobic films with water contact angles above 150°. Potentiodynamic polarisation tests revealed that the superhydrophobic coating provided little or no corrosion protection.

Enhanced mechanical and thermal properties of graphene nanoplatelets‐reinforced polyamide11/poly(lactic acid) nanocomposites

AbstractThe present paper aims to obtain a sustainable nanocomposite by using bio‐based polyamide 11 and biodegradable poly (lactic acid) blend as matrix and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) as nanofiller. GNP was incorporated in the PA11/PLA blend matrix in the ratio of 0.5‐1‐3‐5‐10 wt% through the twin‐screw extruder. The crystallinity of PA11 in the blend, which was 12.9%, increased with the inclusion of GNP, and the highest crystallinity value was observed at 20% for the 1GNP sample. The crystallinity of PLA in the blend, which was 2.3%, increased to 4.6% with 5 wt% GNP addition. The inclusion of GNP to PA11/PLA improved the thermal degradation temperatures and increase the char residue. Also, increments were observed for storage modulus, loss modulus, and glass transition temperature of the matrix with the inclusion of GNP. The addition of GNP caused the tensile strength of the matrix to increase first and then decrease at higher amounts due to the agglomerations. 0.5–1 wt% GNP increased tensile strength by 10% and 5%, respectively. Increasing the amount of GNP to 10 wt% led to a sharp decrease in tensile strength by 24%. Overall, GNP is a suitable nanofiller to enhance the thermal and mechanical features of the PA11/PLA blend.

Incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets/hydroxyapatite in PMMA bone cement for characterization and enhanced mechanical properties of biopolymer composites

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in powder form is broadly used as bone cement in orthopedic applications due to its expanded mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. In this study, a hybrid PMMA biopolymer nanocomposite is developed by the supplement of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) and hydroxyapatite (HA) powders of nano-size with combined loadings ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 weight %. Both materials were applied uniformly to reinforce commercial bone cement made of polymethylmethacrylate. The findings showed that adding 1.5 wt.% of combined HA and GnP nanoparticles to the powder of PMMA bone cement resulted in the expansion of flexural strength by 49.28%, the flexural modulus by 30.80%, the compression strength by 31.7%, and the compression modulus by 57.41%. The nanocomposite was characterized using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDS), Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to study the distribution of reinforced nanoparticles. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis of the prepared samples and fractured surface shows the proper dispersion of nanofillers into the matrix phase and possible reasons behind fracture. The inclusion of GnP and HA in the PMMA enhances the mechanical performances required for biomedical components. Also, the SEM findings of the mechanically tested broken surface of the polymer nanocomposite samples demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed material for joint replacement surgical procedures and orthopedic implants.

Highly Stretchable Conductive Covalent Coacervate Gels for Electronic Skin.

Highly stretchable electrically conductive hydrogels have been extensively researched in recent years, especially for applications in strain and pressure sensing, electronic skin, and implantable bioelectronic devices. Herein, we present a new cross-linked complex coacervate approach to prepare conductive hydrogels that are both highly stretchable and compressive. The gels involve a complex coacervate between carboxylated nanogels and branched poly(ethylene imine), whereby the latter is covalently cross-linked by poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE). Inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets (Gnp) provides electrical conductivity as well as tensile and compressive strain-sensing capability to the hydrogels. We demonstrate that judicious selection of the molecular weight of the PEGDGE cross-linker enables the mechanical properties of these hydrogels to be tuned. Indeed, the gels prepared with a PEGDGE molecular weight of 6000 g/mol defy the general rule that toughness decreases as strength increases. The conductive hydrogels achieve a compressive strength of 25 MPa and a stretchability of up to 1500%. These new gels are both adhesive and conformal. They provide a self-healable electronic circuit, respond rapidly to human motion, and can act as strain-dependent sensors while exhibiting low cytotoxicity. Our new approach to conductive gel preparation is efficient, involves only preformed components, and is scalable.

Investigation of the Impact of Graphene Nanoplatelets (GnP) on the Bond Stress of High-Performance Concrete Using Pullout Testing.

Efficient load transmission between concrete and steel reinforcement by bonding action is a key factor in the process of the design procedure of bar-reinforced concrete structures. To enhance the bond strength of steel/concrete composites, the impact of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) on the bond stress and bond stress–slip response of deformed reinforcement bars, embedded in high-performance concrete (HPC), was investigated using bar pullout tests. In the current study, 36 samples were produced and examined. The main variables were the percentages of GnP, the steel reinforcement bar diameter, and embedded length. Bond behavior, failure mode, and bond stress-slip response were studied. Based on the experimental findings, the inclusion of GnP had a significant favorable influence on the bar-matrix interactions due to the bridging action of GnP as a nano reinforcement. For 0.02 wt.% of GnP, the bond strength was enhanced by more than 41.28% and 53.90% for steel bar diameters of 10 and 16 mm, respectively. The HPC-GnP mixture displayed a reduction in the initial slippage in comparison to the control sample. The test findings were compared to the prediction models created by other researchers and the ACI 408R-12 code.

EMI Shielding Properties of Polymer Blend with the Inclusion of Graphene Nano Platelets

Polymer nano composites based on poly vinyl chloride matrix were fabricated using polyaniline (PANI) and graphene nano platelets (GNP) as electrically conductive nano filler for the application of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. DC conductivity was first evaluated by using cyclic voltammetry and found an increasing trend of electrical conductivity as PANI and GNP was added in PVC matrix that confirms the formation of electrically conductive network structure. Dielectric properties like dielectric constant, dielectric loss and AC conductivity were evaluated in frequency range of 100 Hz to 3 MHz that gives basic prediction for EMI shielding effectiveness. Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) was used to assess EMI shielding properties using coaxial cable method in 11GHz to 20GHz range and it was found that a maximum of 29 dB shielding was archived with the incorporation of 15 wt% of PANI in PVC. This value increased to 56 dB as 5 wt% GNP added in PVC/PANI 15 wt% blend. Interaction of matrix with filler, nature of filler and dispersion of filler in matrix are the key parameters for achieving high shielding effectiveness.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Hybrid Non-Woven Kenaf Fibre Mat-Graphene Nanoplatelets reinforced Polypropylene Composites

In this study, kenaf fibre mat (NWKFM)-graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were fabricated by using compression moulding. The hybridization was done to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties by adding different amount of graphene nanoplatelets as filler in the biocomposite samples. Pure PP and nanocomposite samples of PP+GNP were also fabricated. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a coupling agent to increase the interfacial adhesion of matrix and reinforcement of the biocomposites and hybrid composites samples. The chemical composition and constituent changes were studied by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The mechanical properties in term of flexural and tensile were tested using a universal testing machine (UTM). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out to determine the thermal stability of the composite’s samples. Overall, the results show that the stiffness properties (young’s and tensile modulus) of pure PP and biocomposites enhanced with addition of GNP. The flexural strength also shows promising result with the inclusion of GNP. However, the tensile strength shows a reduction with the addition of GNP. The TGA results reveal that the addition of GNP increases the thermal stability of pure PP and the biocomposites based on the comparison of Tonset values.

Quantification of gas permeability of epoxy resin composites with graphene nanoplatelets

This paper presents the development and validation of a numerical simulation method using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) to predict the permeability of epoxy resin (ER) composites with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs).Gas permeability tests were carried out for a series of GNP/ER nanocomposites with different loadings and diameters of GNPs. The experimental results confirm that inclusion of GNPs in ER significantly decreased the effective gas permeability, with the highest reduction of 66% when the GNP loading was 3 wt%. The effects of using different diameters of GNPs show that using GNPs of 25 μm in diameter achieved less reduction in gas permeability than using GNPs of smaller diameters of 5 and 15 μm at the same loading of 1 wt%. This unexpected result has now been explained by the developed numerical model.The microstructures of GNPs filled ER composites were numerically reconstructed for the relative gas permeability prediction model using LBM. The 3D X-ray CT scan images clearly show agglomeration of GNPs, in particular when the diameter of GNPs is large (25 μm), due to strong van der Waals forces. An agglomeration sub-model was thus incorporated when numerically constructing the microstructure of GNPs filled ER composites. Agglomeration of GNPs results in the formation of a small number of super-thick GNPs, leaving large spaces as ER-rich area without any GNP. This led the GNPs filled ER with 25 μm of GNP diameter to obtain a lower reduction in gas permeability than smaller GNPs filled ER.The results of numerical sensitivity studies on surface area, rotation, curling and folding of GNP flakes suggest that it is acceptable to use flat disk shaped flakes to represent amorphous GNPs with small degrees of deformation (less than 20° and 1.5 for folding angle and curling rate respectively). The results also show that the projection area perpendicular to the overall gas flow direction dominates the overall gas barrier effect of GNPs. The feasibility of using 2D models is demonstrated and it is acceptable to assume that the GNPs in the prepared samples are uniformly sized with a diameter equal to the nominal diameter.This numerical simulation model significantly improves the accuracy for prediction of reduction in gas permeability, over that of existing analytical models, when compared against the authors’ experimental results and experimental data from literature.

Mechanical Properties of Graphene Nanoplatelets-Reinforced Epoxy Grout in Repairing Damaged Pipelines

The use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites together with infill grout has been proven effective for repairing damaged steel pipelines. This paper study the mechanical properties of epoxy grouts where an amount of 0.2% and 0.8% of graphene nanoplatelets particles were added to commercial epoxy resin to evaluate their behaviour regarding neat epoxy resin. Compressive tests, tensile tests and flexural tests were conducted to study the effect of graphene nanoplatelets towards neat epoxy resin. By comparing graphene-modified grouts and neat epoxy grout, there is no increment of strength under compression and tensile test due to poor dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets. Nevertheless, the addition of graphene has produced a noticeable improvement in flexural properties. This signifies that with the inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets, the properties of epoxy grout can be improved if a better dispersion can be achieved.

EMI shielding properties of polymer blends with inclusion of graphene nano platelets

Abstract Polymer blends of poly vinyle chloride (PVC) and polyaniline (PANI) with the inclusion of graphene nano platelets (GNP) are fabricated to enhance the EMI shielding effectiveness. The initial assessment with cyclic voltammetry has shown improved electrical conductivity both for PVC/PANI blends and PVC/PANI/GNP composites. The capacitive effect of the blends and composites is evaluated at lower frequency region (100 Hz−5 MHz). EMI shielding measurements of PVC/PANI/GNP composites is performed in the frequency range 10 MHz–20 GHz. In case of PVC/PANI (15 wt%) blends, a maximum attenuation of ∼27 dB is attained which is enhanced to ∼51 dB (max.) with the inclusion of 5 wt% GNP, mainly due to the absorption phenomena. The enhanced shielding effectiveness is achieved mainly in the frequency range 11–20 GHz. The dispersion state, fillers nature and their interaction may be the main aspects for the enhanced EMI shielding effectiveness of hybrid polymeric nanocomposites.

Solar light triggered catalytic performance of graphene-CuO nanocomposite for waste water treatment

Abstract In this work, the effect of a new nanocomposite material on the photodegradation of methylene blue is demonstrated. The nanocomposite is synthesized by the combination of cupric oxide (CuO) with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, FTIR, Raman, and UV–vis spectroscopy. Interestingly, the inclusion of GNPs with CuO enhances the photocatalytic properties of nanocomposite without tweaking inherent properties such as the conductive nature of GNPs. Within 80 min of exposure to the solar light, a 99.44% photodegradation of methylene blue is achieved, which is much better than using CuO alone, for which the degradation is only 75%. The much-improved photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite is a consequence of low bandgap energy of GCuO as well as the conducting nature of GNPs, that causes fast photo excitation of electrons and lengthens the recombination lifetime of charge carriers respectively.

Investigation on Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of Nylon66/GnP Nano-composite

The tribological behavior of graphene nano platelets (GnP) reinforced Nylon66 polymer Nano composites were studied using a pin-on-disc apparatus under dry sliding conditions. The influence of wear control factors like applied load, velocity, sliding distance and weight percentage of GnP reinforcement on the responses like specific wear rate and frictional coefficient were investigated. Nano composites were developed by melt mixing of various weight fractions of GnP (0/0.5/1/2) with nylon 66 using twin screw extruder. A design of experiments based on the Taguchi technique was performed to acquire data in a controlled way and was successfully used to identify the optimal combinations of control factors influencing the outputs. Analysis of variance was employed to investigate the influence and contribution of control factors on the responses. The results showed that the inclusion of GnP as reinforcing material in Nylon66 Nano composites, decreases the friction coefficient and increases the wear resistance of the Nano composites significantly.

Melt processing and properties of linear low density polyethylene-graphene nanoplatelet composites

Composites of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) were processed using a twin screw extruder under different extrusion conditions. The effects of screw speed, feeder speed and GNP content on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The inclusion of GNPs in the matrix improved the thermal stability and conductivity by 2.7% and 43%, respectively. The electrical conductivity improved from 10−11 to 10−5 S/m at 150 rpm due to the high thermal stability of the GNPs and the formation of phonon and charge carrier networks in the polymer matrix. Higher extruder speeds result in a better distribution of the GNPs in the matrix and a significant increase in thermal stability and thermal conductivity. However, this effect is not significant for the electrical conductivity and tensile strength. The addition of GNPs increased the viscosity of the polymer, which will lead to higher processing power requirements. Increasing the extruder speed led to a reduction in viscosity, which is due to thermal degradation and/or chain scission. Thus, while high speeds result in better dispersions, the speed needs to be optimized to prevent detrimental impacts on the properties.
