Background. Allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis are common allergic diseases in children. Analysis of the incidence and trends of allergic diseases development is necessary for successful solving the problem of morbidity, helping the child population at the regional level, disease forecasting and control. Purpose of the study. To study the long-term dynamics of the main epidemiological indicators of the general and primary incidence of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in the child population of the Grodno region. Material and methods. Retrospective analysis of indicators of general and primary incidence of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in the child population of the Grodno region was performed. The study periods were 1999-2023 years (children aged 0-14 years old) and 2008-2023 years (children aged 15-17 years old). Results. The average long-term age-standardized overall morbidity rate of allergic rhinitis in children aged 0-14 years old was 266.89 (95% CI: 238.33-295.47), the primary morbidity rate was 67.67 (95% CI: 57.36-77.9) per 100,000 children of the corresponding age. The average long-term overall incidence rate of allergic rhinitis in children aged 15-17 years (2008-2023) was 791.97 (95% CI: 680.79-903.14), the primary incidence rate was 113.73 (95% CI: 92.84- 134.61) per 100,000 children of the same age. The average long-term age-standardized rate of overall incidence of atopic dermatitis in children aged 0-14 years old was 872.89 (95% CI: 825.27-919.782) per 100,000 children of the corresponding age, the primary incidence rate was 459.1 (95% CI: 399. 96-518.24) per 100,000 children of the same age. The average long-term overall incidence rate of atopic dermatitis in children aged 15-17 years was 415.68 (95% CI: 377.63-453.73), the primary incidence rate was 143.88 (95% CI: 120.53-167.23) per 100,000 child population of the corresponding age. The long-term epidemic dynamics of allergic rhinitis was characterized by a moderately pronounced tendency towards an increase in the overall incidence rate among children aged 0-14 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = +2.4%) and 15-17 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = +3.62 %) as well as stabilization of the primary morbidity rate in children aged 0-14 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = -0.67%) and 15-17 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = +0.72%). The long-term epidemic dynamics of atopic dermatitis was characterized by a moderately pronounced tendency towards a decrease in the overall morbidity rate for children aged 0-14 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = -1.57%) and an increase in the morbidity rate for children of 15-17 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = +2.1%). There also was a pronounced downward trend in the primary morbidity rate of children aged 0-14 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = -5.42%) and children aged 15-17 years old (average growth (decrease) rate = -5.89%). The cartograms of the territorial distribution of incidence rates of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in the child population of the Grodno region in the periods 1999-2023 (0-14 years old) and 2008-2023 (15-17 years old) are presented. Conclusions. The reasons for the established patterns of changes in the incidence of allergic diseases in children of different age groups, as well as those living in different territories, are most likely due to the influence of environmental and socio-economic factors. The presented cartograms make it possible to visualize the incidence rates of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis in individual territorial and administrative regions of the region.

To study the impact of COVID-19 on the epidemiological characteristics of allergic rhinitis based on local big data in China

To investigate the big data characteristics and trend changes of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) who sought medical attention at our hospital before (from 2018 to 2019) and after (from 2020 to 2023) COVID-19, and provide reference basis for the treatment of AR. This study used a descriptive epidemiological method to analyze the big data and trend changes of AR patients. A total of 62,196 AR patients were collected, of whom 32,874 were male and 29,322 were female, with an age range of 1–89 years. The monthly change trend of AR patients showed a marked seasonality. The number of AR patients increased year by year. There was no significant difference in the number of patients between different genders. There was a significant difference in the number of patients between different age groups. The number of AR patients increased markedly from 2018 to 2023, and COVID-19 seems to have accelerated this process. There is a clear seasonal pattern. The number of boy patients is significantly higher than that of girl patients, and the change in female hormones may affect the incidence of AR. Therefore, it is necessary to update management measures and formulate relevant policies in response to the changing trend of AR since the COVID-19 epidemic.

Additive Effect of Blood and Tissue Eosinophilia on ChronicRhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a highly heterogeneous disease with varied clinical features and treatment effects. This study aimed to investigate the additive effect of blood and tissue eosinophilia on patients with CRSwNP. Based on the blood eosinophil (Beos) count and tissue eosinophil (Teos) count, we divided 144 CRSwNP patients into four groups, analysed their clinical features and histopathologic changes, and investigated their postoperative control. Patients in the Beos+Teos+ (blood eosinophil count > 0.3 × 109/L, tissue eosinophil count > 10/HPF) group had a higher incidence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma. Lund-Mackay (LM) scores, hyposmia visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and Global Osteitis Scoring Scale (GOSS) scores were higher in the Beos+Teos+ group than those in the other groups. Tissue remodelling, such as connective tissue oedema and basement membrane thickening was more severe in the Beos+Teos+ group compared with other groups. There were more uncontrolled patients after surgery in Beos+Teos+, Beos+Teos- (blood eosinophil count > 0.3 × 109/L, tissue eosinophil count ≤ 10/HPF)and Beos-Teos+ (blood eosinophil count ≤ 0.3 × 109/L, tissue eosinophil count > 10/HPF)groups compared with the Beos-Teos- group. Eosinophilic inflammation both in blood and tissue was accompanied by more severe clinical features and tissue remodelling. Eosinophilia in blood or tissue indicated poorer disease control after surgery.

The Impact of Ambient Air Pollution on Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms: A Prospective Follow-Up Study.

Air pollution has become a serious public health problem and there is evidence that air pollution affects the incidence of allergic rhinitis. To further investigate the effect of ambient air pollutants on the severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms, a prospective follow-up study in patients with allergic rhinitis was conducted. A total of 167 allergic rhinitis patients with a mean age of 35.4 years, who were visiting the hospital, were enrolled. The daily symptom severity of allergic rhinitis and the concentrations of six air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, O3 and NO2, were collected through follow-up investigations. The impact of ambient air pollutants on symptom severity was assessed via multi-pollutant models. Among several typical ambient air pollutants, we observed correlations of allergic rhinitis symptoms with PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2 and NO2, whereas O3 showed no such correlation. Specifically, PM2.5 and PM10 were significantly associated with sneezing and nasal blockage. NO2 was significantly correlated with symptoms of rhinorrhea, itchy nose and itchy eyes. CO was significantly linked to sneezing and nasal blockage symptoms. These air pollutants not only had a direct impact on allergic rhinitis symptoms but also exhibited a lagging effect. This study indicates that short-term exposure to air pollutants is associated with exacerbation of nasal symptoms in patients with allergic rhinitis, leading to a decline in their quality of life.

Effects of an online mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis.

The incidence of allergic rhinitis in children is high across the world, as well as in China. Allergic rhinitis in children has serious impact on physical and mental health of the children. At the same time, the caregivers of allergic rhinitis children have heavy burden of care, and their mental problems are severe. It is necessary to implement timely psychological intervention for the caregivers of allergic rhinitis children. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a safe and effective psychological therapy, and the effect of online intervention can be comparable to the traditional face-to-face intervention program. This study focused on the mental health status in the main caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis, and conducted a modified online MBCT intervention on the caregivers, in order to improve their adverse mental state, meanwhile, improve the quality of care they provide. The results show that online MBCT intervention is applicable to the main caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis, and can effectively reduce caregiver burden, relieve anxiety and depression, and improve the level of mindfulness in the caregivers.

Causal association between air pollution and allergic rhinitis, asthma: a Mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies suggest that air pollutants, including particulate matter and nitrogen compounds, could elevate asthma and allergic rhinitis health risks. Nevertheless, the exact nature of the causal relationship between air pollution and asthma and allergic rhinitis remains unknown. This study utilizes the Mendelian randomization (MR) technique to explore the potential causal links between air pollution components (PM2.5, PM2.5-10, PM10, NO₂, and nitrogen dioxide) and the incidence of allergic rhinitis and asthma. A MR study utilized summary statistics from GWAS that are publicly accessible. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) approach served as the foundational analysis technique. To ensure robustness, supplementary methodologies such as the weighted median, MR-Egger regression, simple mode, and weighted model were also applied. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q test, and the presence of pleiotropy was determined through MR-Egger regression. The MR-PRESSO test was employed for outlier detection, and the analysis's sensitivity was scrutinized via a leave-one-out strategy. The IVW technique showed a strong correlation between PM10 and asthma (OR = 0.625, 95% CI = 0.396-0.988, p = 0.044). No significant associations were found between asthma and other air pollutants such as PM2.5, PM2.5-10, NO₂, or nitrogen dioxide. Similarly, allergic rhinitis showed no causal relationships with any studied air pollution metrics. Pleiotropy was absent in the findings. Sensitivity analyses, employing the leave-one-out method, confirmed the stability of these results, unaffected by individual single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). This Mendelian randomization study establishes a causal link between PM10 exposure and asthma, suggesting that interventions to reduce air pollution may decelerate the adverse progression of asthma.

Karakteristik Pasien Rinitis Alergi dengan Hasil Uji Cukit Kulit Positif yang Berobat di Poliklinik THT-KL Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Zainoel Abidin Banda Aceh

Introduction. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease mediated by IgE in the nasal mucosa, resulting from allergen sensitization and causing various clinical symptoms. The skin prick test is the primary diagnostic technique used to detect specific IgE antibodies against allergenic proteins and peptides. The incidence of allergic rhinitis in Indonesia ranges from approximately 1.5% to 12.4% and increases every year. This study aims to determine the characteristics of allergic rhinitis sufferers with positive skin prick test results who received treatment at the ENT outpatient service of Zainoel Abidin Regional General Hospital (RSUDZA) Banda Aceh from January 2019 to March 2020. Methods. This was a retrospective descriptive study with a cross-sectional design that utilized secondary data from patient medical records. The samples were collected using the total sampling technique, encompassing a total of 62 patients in this study. Results. This study revealed that allergic rhinitis sufferers with positive skin prick test results were predominantly in the age group 17-25 years (27.4%), female (69.4%), and from Banda Aceh (56.5%). Most of the rhinitis patients were students (41.9%), with the highest level of education being high school (43.5%). Allergic rhinitis is frequently caused by house dust mites (24.2%) as inhalant allergens and shrimp (26.3%) as ingested allergens. Most allergic rhinitis patients who visited complained most frequently of sneezing more than five times (26.3%). Conclusions. This study concluded that the characteristics of allergic rhinitis sufferers with positive skin prick test results in RSUDZA are predominantly in the late adolescent age group (17-25 years), female, with house dust mites and shrimp as the main allergens, and the most common clinical symptom is sneezing more than 5 times.

Association of residential greenness with incident allergic rhinitis among adults: A prospective analysis of UK Biobank

BackgroundLimited studies have assessed the impact of residential greenness exposure on allergic rhinitis in adults, and its relationship with ambient air pollutants remains unknown. ObjectiveTo investigate the association of residential greenness with allergic rhinitis incidence and explore the mediation effects of ambient air pollutants in adults using data from a prospective cohort study in UK Biobank. MethodsGreenness was defined as the area-weighted mean of greenness coverage based on the land used data from the Generalized Land Use Database for England (GLUD) 2005 in the UK Biobank. Multiple Cox proportional hazard models and a generalized additive model incorporating restricted cubic splines were used to model the potential nonlinear effect of residential greenness on allergic rhinitis incidence and the potential mediation effect of ambient air pollutants. ResultsAmong the 281,699 subjects included in the analysis, 3260 allergic rhinitis incident cases occurred after a median follow-up of 14 years. With per 10% increase in residential greenness at a 300-m buffer, a 2.5% (95% CI: 1.0%, 4.0%) decreased risk of allergic rhinitis was observed. An L-shaped, non-linear dose-response relationship was indicated with a threshold of 54.9% greenness above which no excess allergic rhinitis risk was seen. PM10 partially mediated the relationship between greenness and allergic rhinitis incidence with a mediation effect of 26.9% (95% CI: 12.6%, 41.2%). A similar pattern of association was found at 1000-m buffer size. ConclusionThis study demonstrates a significant beneficial effect of residential greenness on reducing allergic rhinitis incidence. Greenness may erase air pollutants and mitigate the rhinitis risk from air pollution.

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis with Acupuncture Based on Pathophysiological.

Allergic rhinitis is a prevalent allergic diseases and has a profound impact on physical well-being. In recent years, more and more people have changed to allergic diseases, such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, allergic dermatitis and so on. In the incidence of allergic rhinitis, covering all ages. The common clinical treatment of allergic rhinitis are drugs and immunotherapy, but these therapies have certain limitations. Therefore, an effective and economical treatment for AR is urgently needed. Acupuncture are widely used in the clinical treatment of various diseases, but the effect of acupuncture in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) is significant, and the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of AR is also a hot spot. Acupuncture is one of the traditional treatment methods of traditional Chinese medicine, which achieves therapeutic effect by pressing a needle or other means at a specific location on the skin to produce a special sensation. Among them, acupuncture, as a popular treatment method, has attracted more and more attention. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of acupuncture and AR, as well as current studies investigating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for AR.

Distributional Characteristics Analysis of Allergens in Patients with Allergic Rhinitis in Southern Fujian Province, China.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa. However, few studies focus on the distributional characteristics of allergens in AR patients in Southern Fujian Province, China. A skin prick test (SPT) was performed and eight common allergens including Dermatophagoides farinae (Df), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dpt), weeds, animal dander, molds, cockroaches, and mangoes were chosen. The positive reactions rate to the allergens was 65.79% in 6689 patients in Southern Fujian Province. Positive reactions to Df and Dpt had a negative association with age, whereas positive reactions to cockroach and weed had a positive association with age. A linear trend analysis demonstrated a significant positive relationship between positive reactions to various allergens from 2016 to 2019. Positive reactions to Df and Dpt were both correlated with the season. Positive reactions to Df, Dpt, cockroach and weed were related to disease duration and positive reactions to cockroach were correlated with city residence. Multivariate analysis revealed that male positive reactions gradually decreased with age (≤ 60), in contrast to female (≤ 60) positive reactions. Statistical difference was observed between the genders with regard to AR incidence from 2016 to 2019. The positive rate of skin tests was highest in summer in men, whereas in women it was lowest in summer. The gender composition ratios of positive cases in Xiamen, Zhangzhou, and Quanzhou cities differed significantly. The proportion of patients with positive reactions to the allergens in the three cities decreased with age. The highest proportions of patients with positive reactions all occurred during summer in the three cities. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in the age composition ratios across the seasons. This study analyzed the distributional characteristics of AR allergens in Southern Fujian Province, China. These findings will inform specific immunotherapy for AR patients.

Identifying allergic-rhinitis-associated genes with random-walk-based method in PPI network

Allergic rhinitis is a common allergic disease with a complex pathogenesis and many unresolved issues. Studies have shown that the incidence of allergic rhinitis is closely related to genetic factors, and research on the related genes could help further understand its pathogenesis and develop new treatment methods. In this study, 446 allergic rhinitis-related genes were obtained on the basis of the DisGeNET database. The protein–protein interaction network was searched using the random-walk-with-restart algorithm with these 446 genes as seed nodes to assess the linkages between other genes and allergic rhinitis. Then, this result was further examined by three screening tests, including permutation, interaction, and enrichment tests, which aimed to pick up genes that have strong and special associations with allergic rhinitis. 52 novel genes were finally obtained. The functional enrichment test confirmed their relationships to the biological processes and pathways related to allergic rhinitis. Furthermore, some genes were extensively analyzed to uncover their special or latent associations to allergic rhinitis, including IRAK2 and MAPK, which are involved in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis and the inhibition of allergic inflammation via the p38-MAPK pathway, respectively. The new found genes may help the following investigations for understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of allergic rhinitis and developing effective treatments.

Research progress on influencing factors of allergic rhinitis in children

The incidence of allergic rhinitis (AR) is increasing year by year, especially in children. AR not only affects the growth, development, life and learning of children but also causes huge economic and social burdens. This study explores the impact of individual factors such as genetic polymorphisms, epigenetics, inflammatory response mechanisms, and microecological influence mechanisms on children's AR. It also reviews the impact of external factors such as allergenic factors, ambient air pollutants, infection and immunity factors, and climate and climate change on the disease, with the aim of improving understanding of AR in children and providing a basis for its prevention and treatment.

Effects of probiotics on the prevention and treatment of children with allergic rhinitis: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Recent studies have demonstrated the anti-allergic effects of probiotics in humans. However, their role in preventing and treating pediatric allergic rhinitis has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to systematically review the efficacy and preventive effects of probiotics on pediatric allergic rhinitis. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases for all relevant studies on probiotics and pediatric allergic rhinitis. Studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included, data were extracted, and meta-analyses were performed. A total of 28 studies with 4,765 participants were included in this study. The pooled results showed that the use of probiotics was associated with a significant improvement in total nose symptom scores (SMD, -2.27; 95% CI, -3.26 to -1.29; P < 0.00001), itchy nose scores (SMD, -0.44; 95% CI, -0.80 to -0.07; P = 0.02), sneezing scores (SMD, -0.47; 95% CI, -0.84 to -0.10; P = 0.01), eye symptoms (SMD, -3.77; 95% CI, -5.47 to -2.07; P < 0.00001), and Pediatric Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (SMD, -2.52; 95% CI, -4.12 to -0.92; P < 00001). However, the use of probiotics was not associated with the incidence of allergic rhinitis (RR, 0.9; 95% CI, 0.74-1.08; P = 0.26). The present study demonstrated that probiotics were effective and safe for improving pediatric allergic rhinitis symptoms and quality of life. However, probiotics could not prevent pediatric allergic rhinitis.

The Use of Azelastine Hydrochloride/Fluticasone Propionate in the Management of Allergic Rhinitis in Asia: A Review.

The incidence of allergic rhinitis (AR) in Asia and the world is steadily rising. Patients experience incomplete symptom relief despite existing treatment options, which warrants the need for new therapeutic regimes. Azelastine hydrochloride/fluticasone propionate (MP-AzeFlu), a novel intranasal formulation of azelastine hydrochloride and fluticasone propionate has been indicated in the treatment of AR. The current review discusses the effects of MP-AzeFlu versus conventional therapies in achieving superior clinical improvement with a very rapid onset of action (5 minutes). The superiority of MP-AzeFlu in offering complete symptom control with sustained relief in patients with AR compared to the existing therapeutic options is also discussed. MP-AzeFlu has been shown to improve the quality of life for patients with AR, thereby enhancing patient adherence to therapy and establishing its preference for the treatment of AR. Currently, the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines recommend the use of a combination of intranasal corticosteroids and intranasal antihistamines as first-line treatment in patients with persistent AR with visual analog scores ≥5 or when prior treatment with single agents has been ineffective. Widely published data on the efficacy and safety of its prolonged use in adults and children have validated that effective treatment of AR can be achieved with MP-AzeFlu.

Preliminary analysis of seasonal pollen allergens of allergic rhinitis in a hospital of Nanchang City

The study was aimed to analyze the seasonal pollen allergen spectrum of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) in Nanchang city, and to provide evidence for improving the clinical diagnosis, treatment, prevention and epidemiology of seasonal AR. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the results of skin prick test (SPT) among 1 752 patients with AR in outpatient at Department of Otolaryngology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from September 2020 to August 2021 (a total of 1 069 males and 683 females, age ranged from 2 to 84 years old). SPSS 22.0 software was used to analyze the positive rates of main allergens and their differences in gender, age, and month of visit. Differences among groups were compared by student t test, Wilcox rank sum test, or χ2 test. The results showed that among 1 752 SPT-positive patients, the number of simple seasonal AR and the number of perennial combined seasonal AR were 102 (5.82%) and 281 (16.04%), respectively. There was no significant difference between male and female patients in positive seasonal pollen allergens (χ2=2.181, P>0.05), but the positive rate of indoor seasonal pollen allergens in males was higher than that in females (χ2=7.901, P<0.05). The seasonal pollen allergens ranking top 5 of the positive rates were willow (6.62%, 116/1 752), humulus scandens (5.71%, 100/1 752), rape (5.54%, 97/1 752), grey pigweed (4.62%, 81/1 752) and birch (3.60%, 63/1 752). The positive rates of indoor and seasonal pollen allergens increased first and then decreased in different age groups, and the highest positive rates of seasonal pollen allergens were in the age group of 31-40 years old, with statistical significance compared with other groups (χ2=61.269, P<0.05). The seasonal allergen positive rate showed two peaks in time: March to May and September to November. The positive rate of pollen in spring was 60.27% (132/219), which was significantly higher than that in autumn (39.73%,87/219) (χ2=9.247, P<0.05). The positive rate of pollen combination in spring and autumn was 68.29% (112/164), which was significantly higher than that in spring and autumn alone (18.9%,31/164) and (12.8%, 21/164) (χ2=14.731, P<0.05). In summary, pollen allergy in Nanchang City cannot be ignored, accounting for more than 20% of the total number of AR. The incidence of seasonal AR in Nanchang City showed two peaks (March to May and September to November). The common allergens for seasonal AR in Nanchang City were willow, humulus scandens, rape, grey chenopods and birch.

Exploring causal relationships between inflammatory cytokines and allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, and nasal polyps: a Mendelian randomization study.

Previous research has suggested connections between specific inflammatory cytokines and nasal conditions, including Allergic Rhinitis (AR), Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS), and Nasal Polyps (NP). However, a lack of robust research establishing the causal underpinnings of them. This Mendelian Randomization (MR) study aims to evaluate the causal relationships between 41 inflammatory cytokines and the incidence of AR, CRS and NP. This study employed a two-sample MR design, harnessing genetic variations derived from publicly accessible genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets. AR data was sourced from a GWAS with 25,486 cases and 87,097 controls (identifier: ukb-b-7178). CRS data originated from a GWAS encompassing 1,179 cases and 360,015 controls (identifier: ukb-d-J32). NP data was extracted from a GWAS involving 1,637 cases and 335,562 controls (identifier: ukb-a-541). The data for 41 inflammatory cytokines were obtained from an independent GWAS encompassing 8,293 participants. Inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger regression and Weighted median were used to evaluate the causalities of exposures and outcomes. A range of sensitivity analyses were implemented to assess the robustness of the results. The results revealed significant associations between elevated circulating levels of MIP-1α (odds ratio, OR: 1.01798, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.00217-1.03404, p = 0.02570) and TNF-α (OR: 1.01478, 95% CI: 1.00225-1.02746, p = 0.02067) with an augmented risk of AR in the IVW approach. Heightened levels of circulating IL-2 exhibited a positive correlation with an increased susceptibility to NP in the IVW approach (OR: 1.00129, 95% CI: 1.00017-1.00242, p = 0.02434), whereas elevated levels of circulating PDGF-BB demonstrated a decreased risk of NP (OR: 0.99920, 95% CI: 0.99841-0.99999, p = 0.047610). The MR analysis between levels of 41 inflammatory cytokines and the incidence of CRS yielded no positive outcomes. This investigation proposes a potential causal association between elevated levels of MIP-1α and TNF-α with an elevated risk of AR, as well as an increased risk of NP linked to elevated IL-2 levels. Furthermore, there appears to be a potential association between increased levels of circulating PDGF-BB and a reduced risk of NP.

Association of Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Intake with Allergic Rhinitis in Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study of NHANES 2005–2006

Introduction: The incidence of allergic rhinitis (AR) is increasing year by year, and the pathogenesis is complex, in which diet may play an important role. The role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in AR is still controversial. Previous studies have looked at the effects of PUFA during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between dietary intake of PUFA and AR in adults. Methods: We used the NHANES database from 2005 to 2006 to include a total of 4,211 adult subjects. We collected dietary PUFA intake data and information on AR. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were constructed to examine the association between PUFA intake and AR in adults. The t test was used to compare daily PUFA intakes in patients with and without AR. Results: In the fully adjusted model (OR: 1.016; 95% CI: 1.003; 1.028), PUFA intake was positively correlated with allergic symptoms, hay fever, and AR in adults (p < 0.05). In addition, daily PUFA intake was significantly higher in people with allergic symptoms, hay fever, and AR than in people without the disease (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Our results suggest a positive association between dietary PUFA intake and AR in adults to a certain extent. Future studies on dietary PUFA dose will provide new strategies for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases such as AR related to non-pharmaceutical interventions.

Maternal constipation is associated with allergic rhinitis in the offspring: A nationwide retrospective cohort study.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common atopic disease worldwide, and it was found that babies with constipation in their early life might have an increased risk of atopic diseases, including AR. Furthermore, recent studies also indicate that the maternal gut microbiota may influence babies. Thus, we extended the definition of early life in utero and evaluated the association between maternal constipation and the risk of AR in their babies. Using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, a subset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 102,820 constipated mothers and 102,820 matched controls between 2005 and 2015. Propensity score analysis was used to match birth year, child sex, birth weight, gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and children antibiotics taken. Multiple Cox regression and subgroup analyzes were conducted to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of childhood AR. The incidence of childhood AR was 83.47 per 1,000 person-years in constipated mothers. Adjusting children's sex, birth weight, gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal comorbidities, and children antibiotic use, the results showed that the children whose mothers had constipation had a 1.20-fold risk of AR compared to children of mothers without constipation. Maternal constipation was associated with an increased risk of AR. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to pregnant mothers with constipation.

The Relationship between Serum Vitamin D Levels with Allergic Rhinitis Incidence and Total Nasal Symptom Score in Allergic Rhinitis Patients

Background: There is a correlation between allergies and insufficiency in 25-Hydroxyvitamin D. However, there exists a scarcity of studies that have investigated the measurement of Vitamin D levels association with allergic rhinitis. Objective: To assess the correlation between serum vitamin D levels and the occurrence of allergic rhinitis, as well as the overall nasal symptom score in individuals with allergic rhinitis. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Settings: Department of ENT, Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences, Muzaffarabad Pakistan. Duration: January 2022 to June 2022. Methods: The study included all individuals diagnosed with AR, who received treatment and were monitored. The exclusion criteria employed in this study encompassed several categories. Firstly, pediatric patients were excluded from the analysis. Secondly, patients with insufficient follow-up data were also excluded. Results: There were 34.67% male and 65.33% were female. In age groups, 54.67% were aged 19-39, 25.33% were aged 40-59, 12% were aged 60-70, and 6.67% were over 70. Almost 74.67% had low Vitamin D levels, 20% had normal levels, and 5.33% had high levels. About 17.33% had intermittent symptoms, while the majority (82.67%) had persistent symptoms. In terms of TNSS, 44% had mild symptoms, while 56% had moderate to severe symptoms. Results showed a strong relationship between Vitamin D levels and the severity of nasal symptoms in individuals with allergic rhinitis. The P-value of &lt;0.001 indicates a highly significant difference. Specifically, those with mild allergic rhinitis had notably higher Vitamin D levels (22.42±3.87 ng/ml) compared to those with moderate to severe symptoms (15.31±2.64 ng/ml). Conclusion: In this research, we investigated the connection between vitamin D insufficiency and allergic rhinitis (AR). We detected a meaningful association between vitamin D insufficiency and increased eosinophil counts, while there was no significant correlation with serum IgE levels.

Pattern and Severity of Allergic Rhinitis Correlated with Patient Characteristics: A Rural Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is rising in incidence in both developed and developing countries. Genetics and epigenetics have a potential role to play. The pattern and severity of AR have implications with regard to choice of treatment, which itself could be related to patient specific genetic and epigenetic factors. Hence, the present study was undertaken to correlate the patient characteristics with AR pattern and severity, in order to understand the pathophysiology of AR. The study also aimed to find out the allergen sensitivity pattern among patients attending a tertiary care centre of rural central India, where climatic variations make it a high prevalence zone. Prospective Observational study on 90 patients with clinically diagnosed Allergic Rhinitis confirmed by Skin Prick Tests. Patient characteristics like demographic data, data relevant to allergen exposure, occupation, family history of atopy and gender; and Disease characteristics like severity (mild, mod-severe), pattern (continuous/ intermittent), type of disease (seasonal/perennial) were noted, analysed and correlation studied. Majority of the patients with AR were in the age group of 15-40 years. Medical students (52%) suffered from moderate to severe type of Allergic Rhinitis, with Persistent disease in approximately 80%. Similarly, 70.59% of farmers had moderate to severe type of the disease, with persistent disease in 70%. In the present study, in clinically diagnosed allergic rhinitis patients, Mite was the commonest allergen found on Skin Prick Test overall and in Medical students, whereas Pollen sensitivity was more common among farmers. 56.66% of the patients had negative family history of atopy. Severity and type of AR depend on allergen exposure. In farmers and medical professionals, persistent and moderate to severe type of disease was more common, as they were persistently exposed to different type of allergens, mites in case of medical professionals and pollens in farmers. Hence, the Disease characteristics, as defined by ARIA guidelines, should not be taken in isolation and management should consider the Patient characteristics for deciding and devising protocols. In the present study, more than 50% patients were without family history of atopy. Hence, the role of various environmental factors, leading to epigenetic changes could be a major contributor in the increase in incidence of allergic rhinitis in recent times. Occurrence of perennial moderate to severe form of disease, in majority of farmers, defies the phenomenon of "Hygiene Hypothesis", focusing on the role of epigenetic changes and various outdoor allergens in the development of allergic rhinitis in them.
