Behavioral and emotional functioning of children with specific learning disorders

Background: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is distinct from other Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)-5 mental disorders as it is recognized clinically in medicine and as a separate category in special education. Aims and Objectives: The study aimed to study the behavioral patterns and emotional functioning in children with SLD. Materials and Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Tirunelveli Medical College, Tirunelveli, from January 2019 to April 2020 on 100 patients (study group 50 and control group 50) diagnosed with SLDs as per DSM5 criteria. A patient’s history includes age, gender, symptoms, and diagnosis. Assessments were done through a semi-structured proforma, Rutter Children’s Behavior Questionnaire (parent form), the Vanderbilt attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnostic rating scale, and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES). Results: The patient’s domicile in rural areas was 82% compared to urban areas, which is 18%. The Rutter scale – total score was higher in the study group, with a mean of 3.24, compared to the control group, with a mean of 0.44. The RSES compared self-esteem scores and the mean self-esteem scores of 21.56 and 14.72, respectively (P<0.0001). The deviant/antisocial behavior subscale scores were higher for the study group, with a mean score of 1.08, than the control group, with a mean score of 0.02 (<0.05). The ADHD (inattentive type) Vanderbilt scale was compared, and it was found to be positive for the study group and none for the control group (P=0.022). Conclusion: The scores show a significant correlation between higher rates of neurotic behavior and behavioral problems, predominantly inattentive types, in SLD children.

Phosphatidylserine enriched with polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acid supplementation for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents with epilepsy: Arandomized placebo-controlled trial.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequent comorbidity in children with epilepsy, which management mostly relies on the usual treatments of ADHD, especially methylphenidate. Supplementation with polyunsaturated n-3 Fatty Acid (PUFA) has been proposed as an alternative therapeutic approach in ADHD without epilepsy but has never been evaluated in epilepsy-associated ADHD. A multicenter double blind randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluating supplementation with PUFA, in eicosapentaenoic- and docosahexaenoic-acid form, conjugated to a phospholipid vector (PS-Omega3) in children aged >6 and <16-years old, and suffering from any type of epilepsy and ADHD (inattentive or combined type) according to DSM-V. After a 4-week baseline period, patients were allocated (1:1) either to placebo group or to PS-Omega 3 group and entered a 12 week-double-blind treatment period which was followed by a 12 week-open-label treatment period. The primary outcome was the reduction of the ADHD-rating scale IV attention-deficit subscore after 12 weeks of treatment. The study was stopped early because of lack of eligible participants and the expected sample size was not reached. Seventy-four patients were randomized, 44 in PS-Omega3, and 30 in the placebo group. The reduction after 12 weeks of treatment in the inattention subscore of the ADHD-IV scale was -1.57 in the PS-Omega3 group, and -2.90 in the placebo group (p = 0.33, α = 5%). Results were similar after 24 weeks of treatment and for all other ADHD-related secondary outcomes, with no difference between placebo and PS-Omega3. Our study remaining underpowered, no formal conclusion about the effect of Ps-Omega3 could be drawn. However, our data strongly suggested that the PS-Omega 3 formulation used in the current study did not improve ADHD symptoms in children with epilepsy. Supplementation with polyunsaturated n-3 Fatty Acid (PUFA) has been proposed in ADHD but has never been evaluated in patients with both epilepsy and ADHD. To address this issue, we conducted a multicenter double blind randomized placebo-controlled trial evaluating supplementation with PUFA in children with epilepsy and ADHD. The study was stopped early because of lack of eligible participants, hampering formal conclusion. However, the evolution of the ADHD symptoms at 12 and 24 weeks did not differ between placebo and PUFA supplementation, strongly suggesting that PUFA did not improve ADHD symptoms in children with epilepsy.

Childhood Absence Epilepsy- Electroclinical Profile and Prevalence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among a Cohort of 47 Children

BackgroundWe aimed to find the proportion of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children with childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) and to describe their electroclinical features. MethodsVideo electroencephalography (EEG) was performed on 47 children who fulfilled International League Against Epilepsy criteria for CAE. These children were also assessed for the presence of ADHD. ResultsOf the 47 children, 27 (57%) met criteria for the diagnosis of ADHD. Majority (74%) of them had inattentive type of ADHD. Age at onset of absences ranged from three to 12 years (mean 7.2 ± 2.47). We analyzed 219 seizures (154 electroclinical and 65 electrographic). The average seizure duration was 7.1 seconds (range 1 to 38 [S.D. 5.81]). Of the 154 clinical absences, ictal discharges were less than or equal to two seconds in nine of 154 (5.8%); greater than two to less than or equal to four seconds in 33 of 154 (21.4%), and longer than 20 seconds in 11 of 154 (7%). The longest duration of ictal discharge recorded was 38 seconds, and the shortest duration was one second. The onset of ictal discharge had a “lead in” focus in 81% (177 of 219). ConclusionsThe proportion of ADHD among children with CAE is high. A “lead in” focus of the generalized ictal discharges was observed frequently, lending support to the theory that the origin of seizure discharges in CAE is indeed cortical. The shortest ictal discharge recorded was one second.

Distinguishing different types of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children using artificial neural network with clinical intelligent test.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a well-studied topic in child and adolescent psychiatry. ADHD diagnosis relies on information from an assessment scale used by teachers and parents and psychological assessment by physicians; however, the assessment results can be inconsistent. To construct models that automatically distinguish between children with predominantly inattentive-type ADHD (ADHD-I), with combined-type ADHD (ADHD-C), and without ADHD. Clinical records with age 6-17 years-old, for January 2011-September 2020 were collected from local general hospitals in northern Taiwan; the data were based on the SNAP-IV scale, the second and third editions of Conners' Continuous Performance Test (CPT), and various intelligence tests. This study used an artificial neural network to construct the models. In addition, k-fold cross-validation was applied to ensure the consistency of the machine learning results. We collected 328 records using CPT-3 and 239 records using CPT-2. With regard to distinguishing between ADHD-I and ADHD-C, a combination of demographic information, SNAP-IV scale results, and CPT-2 results yielded overall accuracies of 88.75 and 85.56% in the training and testing sets, respectively. The replacement of CPT-2 with CPT-3 results in this model yielded an overall accuracy of 90.46% in the training set and 89.44% in the testing set. With regard to distinguishing between ADHD-I, ADHD-C, and the absence of ADHD, a combination of demographic information, SNAP-IV scale results, and CPT-2 results yielded overall accuracies of 86.74 and 77.43% in the training and testing sets, respectively. This proposed model distinguished between the ADHD-I and ADHD-C groups with 85-90% accuracy, and it distinguished between the ADHD-I, ADHD-C, and control groups with 77-86% accuracy. The machine learning model helps clinicians identify patients with ADHD in a timely manner.

The Efficacy of Visual Activity Schedule Intervention in Reducing Problem Behaviors in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Between the Age of 5 and 12 Years: A Systematic Review.

ObjectivesChildren with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tend to be noisy and violate rules with their disruptive behaviors, resulting in greater difficulties with off-task behaviors and being at risk for social refusal. The visual activity schedule (VAS) intervention program is a frequently used method to teach multiple skills involving on-task, use of schedules, transition behaviors, social initiation, independent play skills, classroom skills, and academic skills. The current systematic review aimed to examine the efficacy of using VAS intervention in reducing problem behaviors in children with ADHD between 5 and 12 years of age.MethodsSystematic searches were conducted using two electronic databases (PubMed and Scopus) to identify relevant studies published in English between 2010 and 2020. Four studies met the inclusion criteria: two studies examined the effect of schedule-based tasks and the use of an iPad on classroom skills, while the other two examined randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of psychosocial treatment for ADHD inattentive type and a cross-sectional study examined the impact of the group size on task behavior and work productivity in children with ADHD.ResultsThe findings indicate that the interventions used in all four studies could lead to increased satisfaction among participants and parents, as well as a reduction in problem behavior. In terms of the research indicators, the RCT had low quality, while the others were of high quality.ConclusionA larger number of studies and the ADHD clinical population would help to increase the generalizability of future reviews of treatments in this context.

Effectiveness of Cognitive-behavioral Play Therapy on Improving Anxiety and Aggression Disorders in a Child With ADHD: A Case Study

This study aimed to assess the effects of cognitive-behavioral play therapy on anxiety and aggression in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by reporting a 7-year-old boy with ADHD inattentive type diagnosed by a psychiatrist. According to the interview, it was observed that the child was physically abused by the father. The chief complaint of the patient’s family was the symptoms of aggression, anxiety disorder, and urinary incontinence. We used the trauma system therapy model, which is used for children and adolescents who have had traumatic experiences and problems with emotional and behavioral modifications. The intervention was provided in 8 sessions for 2 days a week and lasted 45 minutes each. The child was evaluated using the Aggression Scale for Preschoolers and Preschool Anxiety Scale. The results of this study showed that cognitive behavior play therapy can reduce anxiety and aggression in ADHD children who are physically abused.

Study of Depression in Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Subtypes in sample of children patients

Abstract: Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has three subtypes : hyperactive, inattentive and mixed types each of them has role in development and presence of depression. So the purpose of this study to detect the association between each subtype and presences of depressive disorder. This study comparative study done on ADHD patients took place at the outpatient child and adolescent psychiatric clinic at Al-Hussien University Hospital in Cairo, were recruited from January to June 2017. The children was assessed at first by Psychiatric semi-structured clinical interview then Complete medical and neurological examination, The Arabic version of MINI Kid were applied on children with ADHD. Results: The total sample size at time of study was 96 child only 64 child which fit the inclusion criteria then they divided into three groups depending on the type of ADHD according to mini kid scale. Group 1 hyperactive type was 18.7%, Group 2 inattentive type was 56.3% and Group 3 mixed type was 25%. Male sex was more predominant, depression was more prevalent in inattentive type of ADHD in all the sample while inside each group depressed patients present in hyperactive group more than non-depressed patients. There was positive correlation between age and presence of depression in hyperactive type, while there was a negative correlation with the other two groups. Conclusion: ADHD subtypes affect development of depression as found that The inattentive participants more susceptible for depression. Moreover, Age may be risk factor for depression in hyperactive type.

Trends in incidence rates of diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) over 12 years in Taiwan: A nationwide population-based study

We investigated time trends in the incidence rate (IR) of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) across the lifespan and potential factors affecting them using a Taiwanese population-based database. IR per 10,000 person-years (PY) of newly diagnosed ADHD based on ICD-9-CM was calculated annually for the total population, gender, 5 age groups, and 3 ADHD subtypes from 2000 to 2011. Among the 265,932 patients, IR increased from 7.92 to 13.92; the male-to-female ratio decreased from 3.61 to 2.90. The largest increase in IR was noted in young adults (19–30 years), followed by preschoolers (0–6 years), while the smallest increase was in adults (>31 years). The IR trends showed a more prominent increase in males than females among children, adolescents, and young adults, yet a reserved relationship existed among adults, with a more prominent increase in women. The combined type of ADHD exhibited a prominently increasing trend in the child/adolescent group (age≦18) and the inattentive type ADHD in the adult group (age>18). In conclusion, the ADHD IR is increasing with distinct differences among age, sex, and subtypes. The diminishing gap between those who need treatment and those actually treated might partly contribute to this trend, especially among young adults, preschoolers, and females.

Heavy Metals' Effect on Susceptibility to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Implication of Lead, Cadmium, and Antimony.

Background: Heavy metals are known to be harmful for neurodevelopment and they may correlate to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this study, we aim to explore the relationships between multiple heavy metals (manganese, lead, cadmium, mercury, antimony, and bismuth), neurocognitive function, and ADHD symptoms. Methods: We recruited 29 patients with ADHD inattentive type (ADHD-I), 47 patients with ADHD hyperactivity/impulsivity type (ADHD-H/I), and 46 healthy control children. Urine samples were obtained to measure the levels of the aforementioned heavy metals in each child. Participants’ cognitive function and clinical symptoms were assessed, respectively. Results: We found ADHD-H/I patients demonstrated the highest antimony levels (p = 0.028), and ADHD-I patients demonstrated the highest cadmium levels (p = 0.034). Antimony levels were positively correlated with the severity of ADHD symptoms that were rated by teachers, and cadmium levels were negatively correlated with the Full Scale Intelligence Quotient. Lead levels were negatively correlated with most indices of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Fourth Edition (WISC-IV), but positively correlated with inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Lead, cadmium and antimony were associated with susceptibility to ADHD and symptom severity in school-age children. Eliminating exposure to heavy metals may help to prevent neurodevelopmental disorders in children.

Correlation between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and infrequent voiding

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be considered as one of the widespread childhood neurological disorder, which is a well-known disorder among some chronic diseases. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate ADHD in girls with infrequent voiding and compare it with healthy children. Patients and Methods: One-hundred children aged between 5 and 12 years old with infrequent voiding and 100 healthy children without infrequent voiding, who were referred to the pediatric clinic were included in this case–control study as case and control groups, respectively, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria (Amirkabir hospital of Arak, Iran). Subjects were selected through simple random sample selection and ADHD was diagnosed by Conners’ Parent Rating Scale– 48 (CPRS-48) and DSM-IV criteria and was confirmed by psychologist consult. Results: ADHD inattentive type was observed in 6 patients in the case group and 2 patients in the control group. Moreover, 16 and 4 children, from the case group, were affected by ADHD hyperactive-impulsive type. Additionally, 7 and 4 children, from the control group, were affected by ADHD mixed type (P=0.005). There were differences between the prevalence of ADHD in the case group and the control group. Data were analyzed using Binomial test in SPSS 18. Salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase diurnal profiles and stress reactivity in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

There is growing evidence for dysregulation of the stress system in individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The stress system includes neuroanatomical and functional components that function in concert to maintain homeostasis and its main effectors are the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic/adrenomedullary nervous system (SNS). As stress system activity demonstrates a distinct circadian variation, we aimed to describe simultaneously, diurnal rhythms of both the HPA axis and the SNS in children with ADHD and a comparison group. Moreover, we attempted to investigate stress responses to a physical stressor, venipuncture, in both groups. Sixty-two prepubertal children with ADHD combined (ADHD-C) or inattentive (ADHD-I) type and 40 typically developing children provided saliva samples at six specific time points during a day, as well as before and 10 min after a scheduled morning venipuncture. Salivary cortisol and α- amylase were selected as reliable noninvasive biomarkers for HPA axis and SNS function and were measured in the samples obtained. Results revealed that children with ADHD-C had lower mean cortisol values both 30 min after awakening and at 18:00 h than controls (p = 0.002 and p = 0.018 respectively), as well as lower mean Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) and Area Under the Curve for “wake to bed” period (AUCi) values of cortisol (p = 0.004 and p = 0.001, respectively). Also, mean CAR and cortisol AUCi were lower in children with ADHD-I than the control group (p = 0.034 and p = 0.038 respectively). Alpha-amylase measurements showed an increase over time (p < 0.001), which was similar in all three groups. Interestingly, α-amylase changes over time were correlated with the corresponding cortisol changes (p < 0.001). Venipuncture, elicited a significant increase only in α-amylase levels and more so in the control group (p = 0.003). These findings suggest a partial hypofunction of the stress system in children with ADHD.

Anxiety and depression among college students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Cross-informant, sex, and subtype differences

ABSTRACTObjective: This study examined symptoms of anxiety and depression among college students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants: Data were collected between March 2011 and March 2016 from 150 college students with ADHD and 150 college students without ADHD. Method: Participants with ADHD were compared to a sex- and ethnicity-matched control group. For the ADHD group, parent and self-report of anxiety and depression were also compared. Results: College students with ADHD self-reported significantly higher anxiety and depressive symptoms than did students without ADHD. Scores on parent-report measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms were significantly higher than scores on self-report measures. Significant sex differences were found for participants with ADHD, with females showing higher depressive and anxiety symptoms than males. Parent-reported anxiety symptoms were higher for those with inattentive type ADHD compared to combined type ADHD. Conclusion: The current study highlights the importance of multi-informant assessment in ADHD evaluations for college-aged adults.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Associated Cognitive Dysfunction in Pediatric Epilepsy

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neuropsychiatric comorbidity associated with childhood epilepsy, affecting about a third of children with epilepsy. In contrast, ADHD in the general population occurs in 4%-12% of school-aged children. The cause of this association remains unclear. It is likely that common mechanisms underlie the vulnerability for both executive deficits and epileptogenesis. There are characteristics unique to children with ADHD and epilepsy. The inattentive type of ADHD is more prevalent than the combined presentation in children with epilepsy, while the combined type is more common in the general population. Interestingly, there is an equal sex distribution of ADHD in patients with epilepsy, while in the general population, ADHD is 3-7 times more prevalent in boys. Specific features of ADHD seen in different epilepsy syndromes are frequently associated with executive deficits. Early screening of ADHD symptoms in children with epilepsy is essential, as timely interventions can improve academic and social function and outcomes. The mainstays of therapy include behavioral interventions and pharmacotherapy, with evidence demonstrating that stimulants are both safe and effective in children with ADHD and epilepsy.

The link between ADHD-like inattention and obsessions and compulsions during treatment of youth with OCD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been found to be highly comorbid in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Some have proposed, however, that obsessive anxiety may cause inattention and executive dysfunction, leading to inappropriate ADHD diagnoses in those with OCD. If this were the case, these symptoms would be expected to decrease following successful OCD treatment. The present study tested this hypothesis and evaluated whether ADHD symptoms at baseline predicted OCD treatment response. Obsessive-compulsive and ADHD symptoms were assessed in 50 youth enrolled in a randomized controlled trial investigating selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and cognitive behavioral treatment. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) revealed that ADHD symptoms at baseline do not significantly predict treatment outcome. A multivariate RMANOVA found that OCD treatment response moderated change in inattention; participants who showed greater reduction in OCD severity experienced greater reduction in ADHD-inattentive symptoms, while those with less substantial reduction in obsessions and compulsions showed less change. These findings suggest that children and adolescents with OCD and inattention may experience meaningful improvements in attention problems following OCD treatment. Thus, in many youth with OCD, inattention may be inherently tied to obsessions and compulsions. Clinicians may consider addressing OCD in treatment before targeting inattentive-type ADHD.

Aim : Research investigating association between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oxidative stress have reported conflicting and inconsistent findings. We aimed to investigate a novel oxidative stress marker, thiol/disulphide homeostasis, in patients with ADHD and compare the results with the healthy control group. Materials and Methods : A total of 47 medication naïve children and adolescents (35 boys and 12 girls) aged 6–17 years with a diagnosis of ADHD were investigated for oxidative stress parameters and results were compared with that of 41 subjects (28 boys and 13 girls) matched for age and gender. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (KSADS-PL) was conducted to support ADHD diagnosis and to exclude comorbid psychiatric disorders. Thiols, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were measured in serum samples in addition to myeloperoxidase (MPO) and dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis. Results: TOS, OSI and MPO levels were significantly lower in ADHD group (p=0.001, p=0.022,p=0.007, respectively). Predominantly inattentive type ADHD had significantly higher levels of TAS (p=0.014) and TOS (p=0.01) than those with combined ADHD subtype. Oxidative stress index (OSI) levels decreased with increasing age in both ADHD and control groups as well in the whole sample when control and patient groups were tested together (r=-0.376, p=0.009; r=-0.479, p= 0.002; and r=-0.367, p<0.001, respectively). TAS scores significantly increased with age in ADHD group (r= 0.523, p<0.001). Thiol/disulphide homeostasis showed no difference. Discussion and Conclusion: The current study reveals no association between pediatric-ageADHD and thiol/disulphide homeostasis. The nature of relationship between oxidative stress and ADHD needs to be clarified with methodologically robust studies.

Impact of the DSM-V Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Criteria for Diagnosing Children With High IQ.

This study compared the number of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) cases defined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)-IV versus DSM-V criterion in children who have learning or behavioral problems with high IQ. The medical records of children ≤15 years of age who presented with learning or behavioral problems and underwent a Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)-III IQ test at the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic unit between 2010 and 2015 were reviewed. Information on DSM-IV and DSM-V criteria for ADHD were derived from computer-based medical records. Twenty-eight children who had learning or behavioral problems were identified to have a full-scale IQ ≥120. Sixteen of these high-IQ children met the DSM-IV criteria diagnosis for ADHD. Applying the extension of the age-of-onset criterion from 7 to 12 years in DSM-V led to an increase of three cases, all of which were the inattentive type ADHD. Including the pervasive developmental disorder criterion led to an increase of one case. The total number of ADHD cases also increased from 16 to 20 in this group. The data supported the hypothesis that applying the extension of the age-of-onset ADHD criterion and enabling the diagnosis of children with pervasive developmental disorders will increase the number of ADHD diagnoses among children with high IQ.

Global and local grey matter reductions in boys with ADHD combined type and ADHD inattentive type

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has reliably been associated with global grey matter reductions but local alterations are largely inconsistent with perhaps the exception of the caudate nucleus. The aim of this study was to examine local and global brain volume differences between typically developing children (TD) and children with a diagnosis of ADHD. We also addressed whether these parameters would differ between children with the ADHD-combined type (ADHD-C) and those with the ADHD-inattentive type (ADHD-I). Using an ROI approach caudate volume differences were also examined. 79 boys between the ages of 8 and 17 participated in the study. Of those 33 met diagnostic criteria for the ADHD-C and 15 for the ADHD-I subtype. 31 boys were included in the TD group. Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were analysed using voxel-based morphometry. The ADHD group had significantly lower global and local grey matter volumes within clusters in the bilateral frontal, right parietal and right temporal regions compared to TD. A significant group by age interaction was found for right caudate nucleus volume. No differences between the ADHD-C and ADHD-I groups were found. Right caudate nucleus volume and age are more strongly related in ADHD than in TD consistent with previous research.

Personality profiles in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

BackgroundPrevious studies suggested that the presence of ADHD in children and young adolescents may affect the development of personality. Whether or not the persistence of ADHD in adult life is associated with distinct personality patterns is still matter for debate. To address this issue, we compared the profiles of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) that assesses personality dimensions in 119 adults ADHD and 403 controls.MethodsANCOVA were used to examine group differences (controls vs. ADHD and ADHD inattentive type vs. ADHD combined + hyperactive/impulsive types) in Temperaments and Characters. Partial correlation coefficients were used to assess correlation between TCI and expression and severity of symptoms of ADHD.ResultsHigh novelty seeking (NS), harm avoidance (HA) and self-transcendence (ST) scores as well as low self-directedness (SD) and cooperativeness (C) scores were associated with ADHD diagnosis. Low SD was the strongest personality trait associated with adult ADHD. Cases with the ADHD inattentive type showed higher HA and lower SD scores compared to the combined and hyperactive/impulsive types. High HA scores correlated with inattention symptoms whereas high NS and ST scores were related to hyperactive symptoms. Finally low SD and high NS were associated with increased ADHD severity.ConclusionsDistinct temperaments were associated with inattentive versus hyperactive/impulsive symptoms supporting the heterogeneous nature of the disorder.
