Penanganan Gangguan Belajar Anak Disleksia Melalui Spelling Method

Everyone has different abilities and levels of intelligence, including children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Dyslexia is a neurological brain disorder that affects reading and writing skills, rather than being the result of poor learning. It involves challenges in information processing in the brain, so dyslexic children often have difficulty reading words quickly and accurately. This research aims to analyze the treatment of learning disorders of dyslexic children through the spelling method. The methodology used in this research involves a qualitative approach using case studies. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview and documentation. The observation and interview techniques used question guidelines that had been prepared, while documentation was carried out with data analysis techniques which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that the spelling method is an effective teaching technique for children with dyslexia. This method involves phonetic understanding, phonological awareness, as well as a consistent and collaborative multi-sensory approach between schools and parents. The studied child showed significant improvement in reading ability after the application of this method, through repeated practice and periodic evaluation that ensures effectiveness and supports the achievement of the child's academic potential.

Investigating the Impact of Technology Addiction on Early Literacy Skills: A Study of First Graders

This study explores the impact of gadget addiction on the reading abilities of Grade 1 learners, focusing on how technology dependence affects early literacy development. Using a quantitative descriptive correlational approach, the study examined the relationship between gadget addiction and reading proficiency. The findings indicate a minimal and statistically insignificant negative correlation between gadget addiction and reading skills, suggesting that technology use does not significantly impede children's reading development. Despite notable indicators of gadget addiction, such as technology interference in family activities and difficulties in avoiding social media, most learners displayed strong reading and comprehension abilities. The results imply that factors beyond technological dependency, such as educational practices, parental involvement, and individual learner characteristics, may have a more substantial influence on early literacy skills. Consequently, the study concludes that addressing gadget addiction alone may not be sufficient to improve reading abilities. Instead, a comprehensive approach considering various educational and developmental factors should be prioritized. Efforts to enhance early literacy should focus on broader educational strategies, parental guidance, and individualized learner support. The study contributes to ongoing discussions about the balance between technology use and traditional literacy practices in early education, advocating for more holistic approaches to foster reading development in young learners. Future research should explore other contributing factors to literacy achievement, moving beyond the narrow focus on digital device usage.

An assessment of ChatGPT’s responses to frequently asked questions about cervical and breast cancer

BackgroundCervical cancer (CC) and breast cancer (BC) threaten women’s well-being, influenced by health-related stigma and a lack of reliable information, which can cause late diagnosis and early death. ChatGPT is likely to become a key source of health information, although quality concerns could also influence health-seeking behaviours.MethodsThis cross-sectional online survey compared ChatGPT’s responses to five physicians specializing in mammography and five specializing in gynaecology. Twenty frequently asked questions about CC and BC were asked on 26th and 29th of April, 2023. A panel of seven experts assessed the accuracy, consistency, and relevance of ChatGPT’s responses using a 7-point Likert scale. Responses were analyzed for readability, reliability, and efficiency. ChatGPT’s responses were synthesized, and findings are presented as a radar chart.ResultsChatGPT had an accuracy score of 7.0 (range: 6.6-7.0) for CC and BC questions, surpassing the highest-scoring physicians (P < 0.05). ChatGPT took an average of 13.6 s (range: 7.6-24.0) to answer each of the 20 questions presented. Readability was comparable to that of experts and physicians involved, but ChatGPT generated more extended responses compared to physicians. The consistency of repeated answers was 5.2 (range: 3.4-6.7). With different contexts combined, the overall ChatGPT relevance score was 6.5 (range: 4.8-7.0). Radar plot analysis indicated comparably good accuracy, efficiency, and to a certain extent, relevance. However, there were apparent inconsistencies, and the reliability and readability be considered inadequate.ConclusionsChatGPT shows promise as an initial source of information for CC and BC. ChatGPT is also highly functional and appears to be superior to physicians, and aligns with expert consensus, although there is room for improvement in readability, reliability, and consistency. Future efforts should focus on developing advanced ChatGPT models explicitly designed to improve medical practice and for those with concerns about symptoms.

An Empirical Study on Online and Offline Blended Teaching Mode of College English Reading Teaching

Online and offline blended teaching mode is a new teaching mode which is in line with the needs of college English teaching reform and can effectively stimulate students’ interest in English learning. In college Engligh teaching, the improvement of reading ability is crucial for students to acquire knowledge. Moreover, English reading ability is the premise of developing other language skills. College English reading teaching has achieved a certain success at present, but there are still a lot of problems. For some students, their reading ability is still low, and their analytical ability is poor, which are not conducive to improve students’ listening, speaking, writing and translation abilities. Due to these problems, with the guidance of production-oriented approach (POA), this paper makes an empirical study on online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching for non-English majors in our university by means of data analysis and questionnaire survey. This paper tries to explore the following questions: 1) Whether online and offline blended teaching mode can improve English reading ability of non-English majors? 2) Does online and offline blended teaching mode affect students’ learning motivation, learning attitude and learning behavior? 3) What are the advantages of online and offline blended teaching mode? Through the study, it is found that online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching can effectively stimulate students’ interest in English learning and improve their English academic performance. On the other hand, it is also found that online and offline blended teaching mode has higher requirements for teachers’ teaching ability. This study has practical significance for improving online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching and enhancing the reading ability of non-English majors.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Cooperative Think Pair Share Model on Reading Ability in Understanding Arabic reading texts in Eighth Grade Students of MTs Ma'arif Balong Ponorogo. The method used in this study is a quantitative approach of the experimental model with a quasi-experimental research type. The sample in this study consisted of 28 students in the experimental class and 26 students in the control class. Data collection in this study used test techniques, observation, and interviewing techniques. The data analysis used is the Independent Sample t-test and N-Gain test. The results showed that (1) There is a difference in reading ability in understanding reading texts between using the think pair share learning model (experimental class) and not using the think pair share learning model (control class) in the Arabic language subject. This is evidenced by using an independent sample t-test, which results in less than 0.05, meaning Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. (2) there is effectiveness in improving reading ability in understanding Arabic Reading texts, as evidenced by the N-Gain score of 67.9%, which is categorized as quite effective, so it can be concluded that the cooperative learning model think pair share is effectively used for the Eighth Grade students of MTs Ma'arif Balong Ponorogo.

Literature Review on Psycholinguistic Processes in Reading Comprehension Mechanisms in Individuals with Language Disorders

This literature review investigates the psycholinguistic processes in reading comprehensionmechanisms in individuals with language impairment. Reading comprehension is an important aspect oflanguage development, yet individuals with language impairment often experience difficulties in understandingwritten text. Reading comprehension involves various psycholinguistic processes, including phonological,syntactic, semantic and pragmatic processing. Language impairment conditions such as dyslexia, languagedevelopment disorders and reading comprehension disorders often affect these mechanisms. Phonologicalprocessing is key in reading comprehension mechanisms, and individuals with language impairments often havedifficulty in recognising and decoding words. In addition, syntactic aspects play an important role inunderstanding sentence structure and the relationship between sentence elements. Reading comprehensiondisorders are often associated with difficulties in understanding semantic relationships, recognising wordmeanings and applying semantic knowledge in reading contexts. In addition, pragmatic factors are alsoimportant in comprehending text, including understanding context and communicative purpose. Individuals withlanguage impairment may have difficulty in picking up pragmatic nuances and applying them in readingcomprehension. This literature review presents an in-depth understanding of the relationship betweenpsycholinguistic processes and reading comprehension mechanisms in individuals with language impairment.The clinical implications of this study may aid the development of more effective intervention strategies toimprove reading comprehension in this population. With a better understanding of the factors that influencereading comprehension, health and education practitioners can design specific and targeted interventionprogrammes to improve reading ability in individuals with language impairment.

Designing an Instructional Model to improve Reading Abilities of Technical Documents and Learning Attitudes for Vocational Students in Shenzhen Institute of Technology

The purpose of this study is to develop an instructional model to improve the reading abilities of technical documents, and to enhance students’ positive learning attitudes for TVE college students in China. This study developed a teaching model based on the Information Processing Approach, Vygotsky's Scaffolding, and Motivation. This teaching mode has the characteristics and technical attributes of TVE, which can (a) improve the reading ability of TVE college students on technical documentation, and (b) enhance the students' positive learning attitude (enthusiasm). This teaching model includes (1) Principles of the model, (2) Objectives, (3) Syntax, (4) Social system, (5) Principles of reaction, and (6) Support system. Through the application of two classes at Shenzhen Institute Technology in China, it can be seen that three-information input and output activities can be formed in both applications, and there is a progressive relationship between the three activities, and the three activities can fully stimulate students' learning enthusiasm.

On English Reading Teaching in Junior High School Based on ARCS Learning Motivation Model

In the cultivation of the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in language learning, reading is a more comprehensive reflection of the language application process. However, there are still many problems in the current stage of English reading teaching, which affects the effectiveness of English reading teaching and the improvement of students’ reading ability. Strong reading motivation is a key factor in promoting students to actively learn reading. Professor Keller, a renowned American psychologist, proposed the “ARCS Learning Motivation Model” in 1983, which starts with four elements: Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction, and designs corresponding motivational strategies based on the characteristics of students’ learning motivation and teaching content. This study aims to stimulate students’ reading motivation as a breakthrough point, apply the ARCS learning motivation model to English reading teaching in junior high school, and explore whether English reading teaching based on this model can improve students’ reading motivation and thus improve their reading ability and grades. This research selected two classes in the first grade of a middle school as experimental subjects. The experimental class adopted a reading teaching method based on the ARCS learning motivation model, while the control class adopted traditional reading teaching methods. Through a one-month teaching experiment, the researchers collected and analyzed data from students, including questionnaires, tests, and interviews. Based on the analysis of the research results, this research confirms the effectiveness of middle school English reading teaching based on the ARCS learning motivation model in enhancing students’ reading motivation, improving reading ability, and improving reading performance. This provides useful insights for English reading teaching in junior high school and also serves as a reference for future research in related fields.

The Influence of Literature on Chinese-English Biliteracy Development in Classroom Settings

English is an important subject matter in China. For Chinese children, it is a necessary process to gain English literacy in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Through the process, how their biliteracy develops remains unclear. To investigate the issue, this study mainly focused on the influence of literature applied in EFL classrooms on Chinese students L2 English development. Results show that literature is beneficial for students biliteracy development in terms of improving reading ability. Literature contain vivid context suitable for L2 language practices, thus may unconsciously improve students linguistic competency and fluency through the reading process. Identity formation is also important in bilingual reading developments. Through classroom literature practice, students could form proper ideologies of bilingualism and become confident in perceiving themselves as bilingual readers. Results also indicate that literature facilitates students biliteracy development through promoting their cultural understanding. Since literacy is the product of sociocultural backgrounds, biliteracy development could not be separate from altering cultural concepts and enriching cultural understandings. Literature reading not only acquaint students to diverse cultural backgrounds but also encourages constant negotiation of meaning, from where students cultural awareness become mature. This study will shed inspiration for literature practices in EFL classrooms and policymaking of EFL literature curriculum.

Biomedical text readability after hypernym substitution with fine-tuned large language models.

The advent of patient access to complex medical information online has highlighted the need for simplification of biomedical text to improve patient understanding and engagement in taking ownership of their health. However, comprehension of biomedical text remains a difficult task due to the need for domain-specific expertise. We aimed to study the simplification of biomedical text via large language models (LLMs) commonly used for general natural language processing tasks involve text comprehension, summarization, generation, and prediction of new text from prompts. Specifically, we finetuned three variants of large language models to perform substitutions of complex words and word phrases in biomedical text with a related hypernym. The output of the text substitution process using LLMs was evaluated by comparing the pre- and post-substitution texts using four readability metrics and two measures of sentence complexity. A sample of 1,000 biomedical definitions in the National Library of Medicine's Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) was processed with three LLM approaches, and each showed an improvement in readability and sentence complexity after hypernym substitution. Readability scores were translated from a pre-processed collegiate reading level to a post-processed US high-school level. Comparison between the three LLMs showed that the GPT-J-6b approach had the best improvement in measures of sentence complexity. This study demonstrates the merit of hypernym substitution to improve readability of complex biomedical text for the public and highlights the use case for fine-tuning open-access large language models for biomedical natural language processing.

Using Large Language Models to Generate Educational Materials on Childhood Glaucoma

PurposeTo evaluate the quality, readability, and accuracy of large language model (LLM) generated patient education materials (PEMs) on childhood glaucoma, and their ability to improve existing online information's readability. DesignCross-sectional comparative study. MethodsWe evaluated responses of ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Bard to three separate prompts requesting they write PEMs on “childhood glaucoma.” Prompt A required PEMs be “easily understandable by the average American.” Prompt B required PEMs be written “at a 6th-grade level using Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) readability formula.” We then compared responses’ quality (DISCERN questionnaire, Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT)), readability (SMOG, Flesch–Kincaid Grading Level (FKGL)), and accuracy (Likert Misinformation scale). To assess the improvement of readability for existing online information, Prompt C requested LLM rewrite 20 resources from a Google search of keyword “childhood glaucoma” to the American Medical Association-recommended “6th-grade level.” Rewrites were compared on key metrics such as readability, complex words (≥3 syllables), and sentence count. ResultsAll 3 LLM generated PEMs that were of high quality, understandability, and accuracy (DISCERN≥4, ≥70% PEMAT understandability, Misinformation score=1). Prompt B responses were more readable than Prompt A responses for all 3 LLM (p≤0.001). ChatGPT-4 generated the most readable PEMs compared to ChatGPT-3.5 and Bard (p≤0.001). Although Prompt C responses showed consistent reduction of mean SMOG and FKGL scores, only ChatGPT-4 achieved the specified 6th-grade reading level (4.8 ± 0.8 and 3.7 ± 1.9, respectively). ConclusionLLMs can serve as strong supplementary tools in generating high quality, accurate, and novel PEMs, and improving the readability of existing PEMs on childhood glaucoma.

The Study on English Reading Anxiety of Chinese College Undergraduates Based on the Broaden-and-Build Theory

Among many factors that affect students' English reading performance, reading anxiety, which is an important emotional factor in English learning, has gradually attracted attention in recent years. There is enough evidence that anxiety, as a kind of negative emotion, can significantly affect students' reading performance. However, the current researches mainly focus on the differences in students' reading performance caused by anxiety. Relatively few studies have been carried out on the correlation between reading anxiety, anxiety causes and coping strategies. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the causes and coping strategies of English reading anxiety based on quantitative and qualitative research. The research refers to Saito's Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale to design a questionnaire and measure the degree of Chinese college students' English reading anxiety. Based on the broaden-and-build theory and combined with the interview results, it is concluded that Chinese college undergraduates have English reading anxiety in general. Nevertheless, by establishing pleasant reading resources and adopting effective coping strategies, learners can reduce English reading anxiety, thus improving reading ability and enhancing reading interest.

Using a supplemental, multicomponent reading intervention to increase adolescent readers' achievement

AbstractThis study examined the effect of a supplemental, multicomponent reading intervention with 75 seventh graders who scored below grade level according to a battery of assessments. Students received a yearlong reading intervention during the 2021–2022 or 2022–2023 school year. Students' pretest and posttest data were compared to determine the impact of the reading intervention. Findings indicate that the reading intervention resulted in greater than typical improvement in reading ability, as students reading below grade level made more than a full year's growth in reading level. Implications for practice include the need for supplemental support for adolescent readers, which can mitigate the need for reading intervention that persists in secondary education.

Where the data collection system in this research comes from books or journals which are analyzed based on existing problems. The results of this research indicate that picture story books are effective in improving students' reading skills. This is possible because when reading story books students are very motivated, because story books are a favorite among students in general. So, when the lesson material is changed into the form of a picture story, it really attracts students' attention

The Implementation of PDP Framework in Developing Reading Practice Material for the Topic of Tourism and Hospitality

Reading is a complex process of understanding the main messages from a text. Reading is a receptive skill, where learners do not need to produce language to do it. They receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. Reading skill competency can be improved by doing a lot of practice. As learners learn in different ways, one theory of learning focuses on the way information is given to learners and refers to visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Regarding those theories, so it is believed that in order to support the learners in improving their reading ability, the learners need to use appropriate reading practice materials that are related to their interests. In developing reading practice materials, one of the frameworks that can be applied is PDP (Pre-During-Post). This framework helps ensure students are motivated, engaged, and active before, while, and after in reading a text. This research was focused in developing reading practice materials for students of tourism and hospitality. The research design used in this study is the research and development method. The result of this study is reading practice materials in PDP frameworks that have contents related to tourism and hospitality topics. The learners showed positive improvement in reading ability after they were given some practice with the developed materials.

College English Reading Study: A linguistic landscape

A growing interest in second-language learning has resulted in remarkable empirical studies that attempts to explore the approach of improving reading abilities. English reading learning occupies an essential position in the curriculum in college, which requires the students to acquire a higher inferential competence of the reading comprehension. Compared with the traditional reading studies, it can be said that great progress has been made in studies of English reading learning if we take it as an independent subject in language use and language production. However, much evidence indicates that we should probe the exact and implied meaning in depth of the reading materials. Thus, in our study, we offer a practical application of Indirect Speech Act Theory into English reading learning, demonstrating that the theory can help students to decide the tactful meaning intended in the reading.

Assessment of Coronary Stenosis Using Coronary CT Angiography in Patients with High Calcium Scores: Current Limitations and Future Perspectives

Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is recognized for its role as a gatekeeper for invasive coronary angiography in patients suspected of coronary artery disease because it can detect significant coronary stenosis with high accuracy. However, heavy plaque in the coronary artery makes it difficult to visualize the lumen, which can lead to errors in the interpretation of the CCTA results. This is primarily due to the limited spatial resolution of CT scanners, resulting in blooming artifacts caused by calcium. However, coronary stenosis with high calcium scores often requires evaluation using CCTA. Technological methods to overcome these limitations include the introduction of high-resolution CT scanners, the development of reconstruction techniques, and the subtraction technique. Methods to improve reading ability, such as the setting of appropriate window width and height, and evaluation of the position of calcified plaque and residual visibility of the lumen in cross-sectional images, are also recommended.

Text-to-Speech Software and Reading Comprehension: The Impact for Students with Learning Disabilities

This literature review examines the use of text-to-speech (TTS) software as an accommodation for students with learning disabilities and its impact on improving reading comprehension. As the development and availability of TTS tools and assistive technologies have increased over the past decade, it is significant to explore how they are used to accommodate students at all levels of education to promote a universal design of learning. Based on a review of the current literature and utilizing self-regulated learning theory as a framework, four significant themes have emerged: (a) TTS being seen as a compensatory tool; (b) improving reading abilities and comprehension; (c) increasing student motivation and self-efficacy; and (d) the need for training for students, educators, and parents. Findings of this literature review revealed that overall, TTS software is commonly used as a compensatory tool (mainly at the postsecondary level), has assisted in students improving reading speed, fluency, and content retention, resulted in increased student self-efficacy in reading abilities and independent learning, and that there is a significant need to allocate training and technological resources to support students. As there are various directions for future research, exploring this area can contribute to schools promoting inclusive and accommodating learning environments.
