Perception and Adoption of Government Agricultural Technologies among Smallholder Farmers in Western Uganda

Agriculture production and productivity remain key to feeding the growing population with agriculture extension being at the centre of the performance of the agricultural sector in Uganda. Research shows that improved technologies promoted through extension service provision could have an even greater impact on food production and on farmers’ livelihoods in developing countries like Uganda. This study was conducted to investigate the perception and adoption of improved agriculture technologies under the government extension system among smallholder farmers in Kagadi District, mid-western Uganda. Data was collected using a questionnaire from 149 randomly selected households in three sub-counties. Results generated using Excel and SPSS revealed a high positive perception index of +0.63 for government extension services. The level of adoption of improved technology based on generalised partial adoption was 54.3% with farm size and training attendance being the significant factors affecting adoption of improved agricultural technologies in the study area. It is clear from the results that notable differences exist in terms of the perceptions of government extension services and the adoption of improved agricultural technologies. The general observation of farmers’ perception is that government extension service is helpful to farmers and is the major source of agricultural information in the area. Efforts should be made to support access to arable land and intensification of agricultural training sessions coupled with appropriate mobilisation of farmers to attend such training. Further studies should be done to understand these aspects on a wider scope in the country since this study was only conducted in one district. There is also needed to study the factors individually as well as the relationships with other factors to determine the adoption processes of technological advancement

Gender Intra-Household Dynamics Comparison of Paddy Profitability Due to the Adoption of Improved Agriculture Technology

To compare gender intra-household dynamics of paddy profitability due to the adoption of improved agriculture technology. The study used secondary information gathered from 1,184 Tanzanian households in 2020. The gross margin return was used, and a two-sample t-test with equal variance was used to compare profitability between males and females with regard to the intra-household dynamics. The findings revealed that males are dominant in the intra-household dynamics. There was a significant difference in profit between Male (M = [-80009.6], SD = [719178.8]) and Female (M = [-120980.8], SD = [371716.2]); t(7937) = [2.9561], p = [0.0031] for decision on input use. In farm plot ownership there was a significant difference in profit between Male (M = [-79309.96], SD = [717650.8]) and Female (M = [-134222.8], SD = [179688.6]); t(7951) = [3.7523], p = [0.0031] and For the role in land preparation there was a significant difference in profit between Male (M = -75546.25], SD = [7445178]) and female (M = [122535.2], SD = [358831.1]); t(7937) = [3.4394], p = [0.0006].In addition, the study has found that smallholder farmers, in general, are making a loss in production, although females are making higher losses compared to males. Farmers should use improved agricultural technology in package thus combining technology such as use of improved seeds, fertilizers, herbicide, labor saving machine and irrigation. Also empower female paddy producers by offering agricultural credits to smallholder farmers with favorable terms such that farmers can adopt improved agricultural technologies that will improve their rationality and, hence, the economic well-being of their households.

Impact of Training on Modern Machineries and Improved Agricultural Technologies towards Cognitive Assessment of Farmers

In the era of fast changing technology, training has become an integrated part of investment for accelerating transfer of technology to people of all walks of life. The well-established network of organizations spread over the length and breadth of the country. The budget spent on training has tremendously increased over the past few years. with this background the study under taken at Trichy district, Tamil Nadu state of a country India by employing purposive sampling procedure. Agricultural Engineering College & Research Institute, Kumulur is one of the constituent colleges of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University located in Trichy. It is a pioneer institute in Tamil Nadu doing research on Agricultural Engineering technologies and Machinery. It is being chosen by the Tamil Nadu Govt. for state level capacity development trainings of farmers under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency and Agrl. Engineering Department (AED). Using simple random sampling procedure 10 farmers (trainees) were selected from 18 Districts of Tamil Nadu who were visited the institution during the study period. (180 sample size). The major objectives, as study of socioeconomic profile and knowledge assessment during pre and post training on Farm Machineries, Bio-energy, Agricultural Processing, Soil and Water Conservation, Drip irrigation and improved Agricultural sciences. Among 180 respondents, Majority of them were old age group (38.89 %) studied primary education (30.00 %) equally spread in marginal and small land holdings (around 75 %), possessed high level of farming experience (38.89 %) had medium level of extension agency contact (47.78 %), possessed medium level of Information seeking behaviour (53.89 %) with a medium level of Innovativeness (42.78 %). Knowledge test was assessed prior to training, among 180 respondents, Majority of farmers belonged to the medium level of knowledge category on all six categories and the after training knowledge test showed that the respondents belonged to low level were distributed in medium to high level of knowledge category and the medium level was elevated to high level category. The alternate hypothesis (H1)was proved through ‘ t’ test that there was a significant difference prevailed in the knowledge level of the respondents acquired through the trainings conducted on the recently developed Agrl. Technologies and modern machineries.

Agricultural Research and Extension Linkage: Review on Roles in an Improved Agricultural Technology Transfer in Ethiopia

Agricultural research and extension services are two structures which can be connected via information flow, capacity building and feedback on the technology. Ethiopian agricultural research system is prepared by means of a decentralized structures in which there are federal and regional research institutes.The concept of linkage implies the communication and working relationship established between two or more organizations controlling commonly shared objectives in order to have regular contact and improved productivity. The ultimate objective of both research and extension systems is to increase agricultural production. Their roles of generating and transferring technology are complementary.Agricultural research and extension are complementary acticities to achieve the common goal of increasing agricultural productivity. Strong formal linkage, coordination and cooperation among research centers, development agents and farmers need to be created on the technologies of research centers are able to implement on farmers field and improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers. Impact of Improved Agricultural Technology Use on Household Income in Eastern Ethiopia: Empirical Evidence from a Propensity Score Matching Estimation

This article investigates the impact of improved agricultural technology use on farm household income in eastern Ethiopia. Primary data for the study were obtained from a random sample of 248 rural households, 119 of which are improved technology users and the rest are non-users. The research employed the propensity score matching procedure to establish the causal relationship between adoption of improved crop and livestock technologies and changes in farm income. Results from the econometric analysis show that households using improved agricultural technologies had, on average, 23,031.28 Birr 1 higher annual farm income compared to those households not using such technologies. Our findings highlight the importance of promoting multiple and complementary agricultural technologies among rural smallholders. Therefore, we suggest that rural technology generation, dissemination and adoption interventions be strengthened. Moreover, the linkage among research, extension, universities and farmers needs to be enhanced through facilitating multistakeholder innovation platforms.

Rice Commercialisation and Improved Agricultural Technology Adoption in Northern Ghana: Endogenous Switching Poisson Approach

This study investigated the factors that influence the commercialisation drive and the effect on the adoption of improved agricultural technologies (IATs) using data collected from 543 farm households in northern Ghana. The method of analysis involved the estimation of Endogenous Poisson model. The findings indicate that commercialisation does enhance the adoption of IATs and is driven by factors such as: off-farm activities, rice output, sex, household headship, farm size, credit, commercial centre location. The probability of adopting IATs was also influenced by age, experience, mass media information sources, and home-to-farm distance. Stakeholders should target the youth and step up efforts in supporting flagship programmes such as the “Planting for Food and Jobs” and Planting for Export”, while supporting livelihood diversification programmes.

Farmers’ Willingness to Pay for Improved Agricultural Technologies: Evidence from a Field Experiment in Tanzania

Initiatives on the sustainable intensification of agriculture have introduced improved technologies tailored to farmers’ local conditions by trial demonstration with free provision of improved seeds and fertilizers. It is not clear, though, whether smallholder farmers would be willing to pay for these technologies, and what factors determine their informed demand. Using a contingent valuation experiment, combined with information at baseline among 400 households in Northern Tanzania, this study measured farmers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for hybrid maize seed and local inorganic fertilizer. Farmers’ WTP was estimated using a dichotomous contingent valuation with follow-up model. Results showed that the average WTP was 61% higher for hybrid maize seed, and 15% lower for inorganic fertilizer, than their respective average local market prices during the reference period, suggesting that farmers were willing to pay a premium for hybrid maize seed, while they did not seem to be interested in fertilizer purchase at current market price. Moreover, since improved access to extension services was found to positively affect farmers’ WTP, strengthening extension services could be a suitable policy intervention to increase farmers’ demand for improved technologies. On the other hand, farmers’ risk aversion was negatively correlated with WTP for both technologies. This result suggests that encouraging risk reduction options, such as agricultural insurance, could be a useful policy strategy for boosting farmers’ demand for improved agricultural technologies.

Technology adoption typology and rice yield differentials in Ghana: Principal component analysis approach

This study used primary data obtained from rice farmers in Guinea Savannah Zone (GSZ), Forest Savannah Transition Zone (FSTZ) and Coastal Savannah Zone (CSZ). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to classify farmers into technology adopters. The study used Welch’s t-test to test the statistical significant differences in yield between technology adopters. Through the use of PCA, farmers were objectively classified as non-adopters (users of indigenous farming practices, IFPs), adopters of farmer innovation systems (FISs), adopters of improved agricultural technologies (IATs), and adopters of both FISs and IATs. Comparatively, a larger proportion of farmers in CSZ adopted IATs. The lowest percentage of farmers adopted IATs in GSZ. FISs’ package is highly adopted by farmers in FSTZ. With the help of Welch t-test, the study demonstrated that adopters of FISs obtained appreciable rice productivity even though it is second to IATs. The study showed that IATs are the superior technologies when considering rice productivity and hence should be highly promoted among farmers in the whole country. Concerted and co-ordinated efforts should be made for researchers in national agricultural research and academic agricultural research institutions or centres to research into rice production and farmer innovation systems, improve upon them and make them available to farmers for adoption.

Review on Adoption of Improved Agricultural Technologies in Ethiopia

The objective of this review was to assess the factors affecting adoption and intensity of agricultural new technologies. The adoptions of agricultural technologies were highly influenced by socio-economic factors, institutional, location factors as well as agro-ecological factors and the characteristics of the farmers were those factors affecting the adoption and intensity of agricultural new technologies. Also the review was focused on the probability of adoption of crop, feed improvement technologies and artificial insemination. The other objective of the review was the impact of the technology adoption on the small holder farmers’ welfare.

Motivations and Mental Models Associated with Smallholder Farmers\u2019 Adoption of Improved Agricultural Technology: Evidence from Use of Quality Seed Potato in Kenya

Potato is a major food staple that makes a significant contribution to food security, having potential to smooth the volatility in food prices resulting from recent episodes of global food price increases. Despite its importance, most potato growers continue to use poor-quality seed, normally obtained from local/community sources. This study uses means-end chain theory to examine the drivers of use of quality seed potato, and the mental models associated with quality seed potato use. It finds that the decision to purchase and use quality seed is driven by deep-seated life goals that farmers pursue, and that profit-making is merely a means to these end/life goals. It further finds that the structure of mental models differs by the gender of the adopter and between adopters and nonadopters. The study concludes that the structure and content of farmers’ mental models differ by farmer type. The implications of the study findings for policy are discussed.

The Role of Communication in Dissemination of Improved Agricultural Technology in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger, Nigeria

Purposive sampling technique using 40 farmers each from 4 villages in the study area was employed. Information was elicited from the respondents using well structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using percentages, frequency distribution, likert scale and probit analysis. Results indicated that among the factors influencing dissemination of improved technology, age, education and gender were significant at 5% level of significance. Most of the respondents do not understand the major language of instruction in Nigerian institutions due to absence of multilingualism in dissemination of techniques. Employment of more female extension agents, extension agents who can speak the farmers own language as well encouraging multilingualism will lead to increased productivity and subsequently enhance the food security status of the nation.

Influence Of Fund Availability On Adoption Of Improved Agricultural Technologies Among Farmers Involved In The Special Programme For Food Security In Rivers State, Nigeria

This study examined the extent to which availability and use of fund influenced adoption of improved agricultural technologies among different categories of adopters in Rivers State, Nigeria. Data were collected with the aid of questionnaire complimented by group discussion from a random sample of 150 farmers involved in the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and regression. There was significance difference between adoption of improved agricultural technologies and fund received because farm size increased with the aid of fund received from the programme. It is recommend that suitable technological packages be designed for farmers. Government should solidify and monitor SPFS for proper accountability. 'With' and 'without' technology situations were compared in relation to the package of groundnut production technology introduced by the Legumes On-farm Testing and Nursery Unit (LEGOFTEN) program of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in the late 1980s. The introduction of technology resulted in the emergence of the following indicators with strong gender implications: (a) labor and time allocation patterns, (b) decision-making behavior with regard to the resource use of crop products, and (c) differential perceptions of users, with impli cations for technology development.The allocation of time to various activities, particularly by women, was sig nificantly influenced by the introduction of the technology. The decision-making pat terns indicate the gender-related segmentation of market and domestic activities; and men gaining greater control over market-related activities and women over domestic activities. Differences in perception regarding technology do exist between women and men in farm households. Women not only perceive technology in terms of its workability but also consider aspects of drudgery, while men are mostly concerned with financial viability. A research and development agenda which incorporates an analysis of gender disaggregated farmer perspectives is likely to lead to a more ap propriate and acceptable technology which will gain further and wider adoption.
