Factors for improving productivity in the New Zealand residential construction sector

Purpose The New Zealand (NZ) construction industry significantly impacts the country's economy and is one of the largest sectors in terms of total employment. However, a persistent and pressing need for improvement exists. Meeting the ongoing demand for housing and urban development requires enhancing residential construction productivity. The purpose of this paper is to determine what factors improve construction productivity in the NZ residential construction sector. Design/methodology/approach Data were obtained from construction industry bodies using a semi-structured online questionnaire survey. From 305 online questionnaires administered, 106 samples were completed by residential industry construction professionals across NZ. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to establish the importance of empirical factors for improving construction productivity in the NZ residential construction sector. Findings The Garrett ranking technique revealed this study's top five factors for enhancing construction productivity: adequate design, communication, quality management (QM), supervision and organizational training. Other factors, such as unskilled workers, skilled workers, reworks and employee motivation, ranked less important. Research limitations/implications While providing a valuable exploration of factors that can positively impact residential construction productivity in NZ, this study contains certain limitations. The study's focus on a specific geographic location and a small sample size (n = 106) may restrict the generalizability of its findings to other regions or countries. Furthermore, the reliance on self-reported data from industry professionals introduces the possibility of bias or inaccuracies in the results. In addition, this study did not investigate the potential influence of external factors, such as economic conditions or regulatory changes, on residential construction productivity. Despite these limitations, this study presents a foundation for future research on this topic. Future research could address these limitations by conducting multi-country studies and using objective productivity measures to provide a broader context. In addition, open-ended questions could be used to collect more detailed qualitative data, enhancing this study's dependability. This methodological constraint could have omitted important experiential nuances, which could be explored in future research to provide more comprehensive and rigorous findings. Practical implications Research studies indicate that several construction productivity factors have remained unchanged for over three decades (Arditi and Mochtar, 1996; Hasan et al., 2018). The implications of this study are significant for the residential sector in NZ. By identifying the key factors that can improve productivity in the sector, such as complete design and specifications, effective communication, quality management, adequate supervision, training, skilled labour and employee motivation, this study provides valuable insights for industry practitioners and policymakers. It expands the existing productivity literature around factors for improving NZ residential construction productivity. One important implication of this study is the link between QM and improved productivity, highlighting the significance of strategic organizational investments in QM and the added opportunity presented to policymakers concerning industry-wide improvements. Moreover, the findings suggest that investing in worker training is essential. Ensuring workers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their tasks efficiently can enhance productivity and project outcomes. In conclusion, this study's findings emphasize the factors that can improve construction productivity in residential projects in NZ, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for all stakeholders. Originality/value This research offers a unique perspective on improving residential construction productivity in NZ by identifying and analysing specific factors that can enhance efficiency across the sector. It provides novel findings and valuable insight into possible organizational improvement strategies yet considered in the NZ residential sector.

Effect of human emotional responses on human-robot team pty in construction

Human-robot collaboration (HRC) is expected to improve construction productivity by integrating robotic capabilities with human expertise. However, the effects of HRC on human emotions are unclear despite their critical impacts on human performance during HRC. This paper examined the inter-relationship between robots' parameters, like movement speed, and emotional responses, during HRC for a construction task. Eighteen participants were observed as they experience various conditions of robots' parameters during a bricklaying task with an arm-type collaborative robot in a laboratory setting. Their brainwaves (i.e., electroencephalogram (EEG) signals) were monitored using an EEG headset to identify emotional responses. Results showed significant emotional variations due to robots' parameters, which could affect the estimated productivity of human-robot teams. This paper demonstrated the emotional changes caused by the robots' parameters during HRC for construction tasks, highlighting the importance of considering emotions as a way to balance the emotional well-being of people and the high productivity of human-robot teams.

DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN CONSTRUCTION AND CIVIL ENGINEERING IN THE CONTEXT OF DIGITALIZATION OF THE UKRAINIAN ECONOMY

Therefore, systematization and coverage of key aspects of the impact of digital Transformation into the construction industry and civil engineering in Ukraine is the main task today. Methodology. The introduction of Internet of Things technologies in the construction industry expands the possibilities of building control and management. Findings. Sensors located in different parts of the structures allow you to monitor the condition of the building in real time, identify possible problems and ensure the safety of objects. Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of the digital transformation of construction. Machine learning algorithms help predict and optimize construction processes, which increases Efficiency of planning and resource management. The 3D printing system in construction is one of the promising and revolutionary innovations that is already influencing traditional approaches to construction processes. This digital technique will bring significant changes to the field of construction, accelerating and optimizing a number of stages from design to execution Originality. Analysis of current problems, especially now, in the difficult times of war, industrial construction in Ukraine, as well as around the world, is a promising direction for the development of other industries in general. Industrial construction is an important branch of the construction industry that specializes in the creation and operation of buildings and infrastructure facilities for industrial needs. Practical value. The introduction of innovative technologies in construction and civil engineering in the context of digitalization of the Ukrainian economy has a significant practical impact on various aspects of the industry: Improving Construction Productivity and Quality: Use of digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), allows you to increase the efficiency of construction processes, reduce the time of work and avoid errors; Cost optimization: Using machine learning algorithms to predict resource needs, such as materials and labor, allows you to rationalize costs and reduce construction costs.

BIM implementation for Nigeria’s polytechnic built environment undergraduates: challenges and possible measures from stakeholders

PurposeStudies show that building information modelling (BIM) technology can improve construction productivity regarding the design, construction and maintenance of a project life cycle in the 21st century. Revit has been identified as a frequently used tool for delivering BIM in the built environment. Studies about BIM technology via Revit are scarce in training middle-level workforce higher education institutions. Thus, this study aims to investigate the relevance of BIM technology and offer measures to promote digitalisation in Nigeria’s built environment polytechnic undergraduates via Revit.Design/methodology/approachGiven the unexplored nature of training the middle-level workforce in Nigeria, 37 semi-structured virtual interviews were conducted across Nigeria, and saturation was achieved. The participants were knowledgeable about construction-related BIM. The researchers used a thematic analysis for the collected data and honed them with secondary sources.FindingsImproved visualisation of design, effective and efficient work productivity, automatic design and quantification, improved database management and collaboration and data storage in the centrally coordinated model, among others, emerged as BIM’s benefits. BIM technology via Revit is challenging, especially in Nigeria’s polytechnic education curriculum. The 24 perceived issues were grouped into government/regulatory agencies-related, polytechnic management-related and polytechnic undergraduate students-related hindrances in Nigeria’s built environment.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is limited to BIM implications for Nigeria’s built environment polytechnic undergraduates.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature paucity in attempting to uncover perceived issues hindering the implementation of BIM technology via Revit in training Nigeria’s built environment polytechnic undergraduates via a qualitative approach.

XGB-Northern Goshawk Optimization: Predicting the Compressive Strength of Self-Compacting Concrete

The contributions of this study, which include enhanced predictive precision and the integration of supplementary admixtures, may be effectively used in real-world scenarios to optimize self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixes for particular applications. This technology exhibits the capacity to improve construction productivity, minimize material wastage, and foster the development of resilient and environmentally friendly infrastructures. This research examined radial basis function (RBF) network and extreme gradient boosting (XGB-based models for predicting the compressive strength (Cs) of SCC. A dataset was generated through the collection of experimental samples, which encompassed supplementary admixtures in addition to the conventional constituents of concrete comprised of lime powders, fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, steel slag powder, super-plasticizer, and viscosity-modifying admixtures. In the present study, two optimization algorithms named the northern Goshawk optimization algorithm (NGOA), and Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO) were linked with RBF and XGB models (abbreviated as XGBNG, XGBHG, RBFNG, and RBFHG). The results indicate that each of the four models exhibits a notable degree of precision in their prediction methodologies for Cs. A considered comprehensive metric named OBJ showed that the XGBNG simulation received the slightest value at 0.8062, followed by XGBHG at 1.657, then RBFNG at 2.4891, and last RBFHG by 3.9131.

Integrating BIM–IoT and Autonomous Mobile Robots for Construction Site Layout Printing

The traditional methods of marking construction site layouts using manual techniques such as chalk lines are prone to human errors, resulting in discrepancies between blueprints and actual layouts. This has serious implications for project delivery, construction, costs and, eventually, project success. However, this issue can be resolved through autonomous robots and construction automation in line with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 goals. Construction automation enables workers to concentrate on the construction phase and not worry about manual site markups. This leads to an enhancement in their productivity. This study aims to improve the floor layout printing technique by introducing a framework that integrates building information modeling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT), i.e., BIM–IoT and autonomous mobile robots (AMR). The development process focuses on three key components: a marking tool, an IoT-based AMR and BIM. The BIM-based tools extract and store coordinates on the cloud platform. The AMR, developed using ESP32 and connected to the Google Firestore cloud platform, leverages IoT technology to retrieve the data and draw site layout lines accordingly. Further, this research presents a prototype of an automated robot capable of accurately printing construction site layouts. A design science research (DSR) method is employed in this study that includes a comprehensive review of the existing literature and usage of AMRs in construction layout printing. Subsequently building upon the extant literature, an AMR is developed and experiments are conducted to evaluate the system’s performance. The experiment reveals that the system’s precision falls within a range of ±15 mm and its angle accuracy is within ±4 degrees. Integrating robotic automation, IoT and BIM technologies enhances the efficiency and precision of construction layout printing. The findings provide insights into the potential benefits of deploying AMRs in construction projects, reducing site layout errors and improving construction productivity. This study also adds to the body of knowledge around construction automation in line with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 endeavors.

Assessing the impact of conventional formwork and Mivan formwork on construction productivity and efficiency

The construction sector is continuously exploring innovative strategies to enhance productivity and efficiency. This research project centers on evaluating the use of conventional formwork and Mivan formwork in construction projects, aiming to improve construction productivity and efficiency. The primary objective is to compare the time and cost requirements of these two formwork systems to assess their impact on project outcomes. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses. A comprehensive review of existing literature is undertaken to gather knowledge on conventional formwork, Mivan formwork, construction productivity, and efficiency. Data is collected from construction projects that have employed both formwork systems, and key performance indicators such as project duration, labor productivity, material consumption, and costs are examined and compared. The findings will provide valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of conventional formwork and Mivan formwork. The analysis will identify the factors that influence productivity and efficiency in each system and highlight areas for potential improvement. The ultimate aim of this study is to provide guidance to construction professionals in making informed decisions regarding the selection of formwork systems, taking into account factors such as cost, time, labor requirements, and quality. Additionally, the research will contribute to the existing knowledge base on construction productivity and efficiency, offering recommendations to enhance project outcomes. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of conventional formwork and Mivan formwork, this study seeks to drive advancements in construction practices and contribute to overall industry improvement.

Bar continuity and strain compatibility for high-strength steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures

High-strength steel reinforcement in grade B600 with yield strength of 600 N/mm2 is gaining popularity for its potential to reduce the total amount of reinforcement used and improve construction productivity. However, longer lapped length is required by the conventional lap splicing method for bar continuity. Besides, the conventional design methods are limiting the strength of reinforcement due to strain compatibility issue which suggest that the concrete would fail before B600 rebar yield. This study investigated the reliability of mechanical couplers as alternative splicing method. Statistical analysis showed that the performance of permanent elongation is well within the specified limit of <0.1 mm and the mean tensile strengths are 15.7%–22.1% higher than the requirement. This study also investigated the effectiveness of confinement on enhancing the strain compatibility between B600 rebars and normal concrete through finite element analysis. Results showed with adequately close stirrups, the B600 bars are able to yield and the overall load resistance could be improved by 24%–27% compared to the unconfined models.

Enhancing productivity in construction with co-existence of different definitions

Productivity has long been considered highly important in Singapore. In 2015, a national strategy considering skills, innovation and productivity as the basis for sustaining economic growth involving all sectors, was replaced with one seeking to move the economy from a “value-adding” to a “value-creating” one. In Singapore, construction productivity is mainly measured by: value added per person employed; and m2 of floor area completed per manday. By the economic measure, construction usually has the lowest annual growth rate among sectors, but the physical measure shows consistent improvement. This discrepancy has led to debate on the appropriate measure. The construction productivity programme in Singapore has included: promoting mechanisation, standardisation and prefabrication; training; procurement arrangements; regulatory requirements; and application of information and communication technology. Part of the findings of a study commissioned by two trade associations is presented. The aim was to derive findings which would help construction companies to improve productivity, and government to devise better policies and programmes. The study is based on interviews and focus group discussions with senior practitioners in Singapore. The questions included: level of construction productivity; how it is measured; firms’ policies on productivity; obstacles to, and enablers of, productivity measurement and improvement; the productivity development programme; and how productivity could be improved. The study found that construction firms could systematically develop their productivity-enhancing capabilities. It proposed measures for government and industry to improve construction productivity performance.

Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) Checklists for Off-Site Construction (OSC) Projects

Off-Site Construction (OSC), which has the advantage of improving construction productivity, is being spotlighted as a solution to the limitations of conventional construction production methods. Despite the need for, and various advantages of, the introduction and utilization of OSC, however, several issues remain, such as design errors and reduction in design completeness, due to the lack of experience and expertise of project participants, as well as improper consideration of production environment and technical constraints. To resolve these issues, it is necessary to develop an optimal design plan that conforms to the OSC manufacturing environment and manufacturing efficiency; thus, there have been ongoing efforts in the construction industry to introduce Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), to derive the optimal design plans for OSC projects. Some studies related to the application of DfMA to OSC have been conducted, however they neglected to present a checklist for reviewing the optimality of OSC design plans. This study has therefore developed an OSC–DfMA checklist, to review the optimality of design plans for OSC projects, by listing optimal design goals for OSC projects, the OSC process, and DfMA principles. This study utilized the systematic literature review, structured interview, and content validity analysis methods to develop the OSC–DfMA checklist presented herein. The developed OSC–DfMA checklist will be applicable to reviewing the optimality of the OSC design plans.

Applications of augmented reality for construction productivity improvement: a systematic review

PurposeDespite the significance of the construction industry to the nation's economic growth, there is empirical evidence that the sector is lagging behind other industries in terms of productivity growth. The need for improvements inspired the industry's stakeholders to consider using emerging technologies that support the enhancement. This research aims to report augmented reality applications essential for contractors' productivity improvement.Design/methodology/approachThis study systematically reviewed academic journals. The selection of journal articles entailed searching Scopus and Web of Science databases. Relevant articles for reviews were identified and screened. Content analysis was used to classify key applications into six categories. The research results were limited to journal articles published between 2010 and 2021.FindingsAugmented reality can improve construction productivity through its applications in assembly, training and education, monitoring and controlling, interdisciplinary function, health and safety and design information.Originality/valueThe research provides a direction for contractors on key augmented reality applications they can leverage to improve their organisations' productivity.

Therefore this study examined the critical project manager's leadership style to influence construction productivity. The study adopted a quantitative research approach; thus, closed-ended questionnaires were distributed to construction professionals via the Survey Monkey platform. Data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify frequencies and weighted scores. The findings indicate the main factors affecting construction productivity as incompetent supervising and management, poor leadership, lack of skilled and experienced labour, and poor project communication. Therefore project managers should exhibit supportive (ability to delegate and assign tasks to the employees), charismatic (ability to transform attitudes and beliefs in employees), transformational (ability to inspire others), and democratic (ability to include employees in decision making) leadership styles to influence construction productivity positively. There is an urgent need for project managers to be trained on the appropriate soft skills aspect of managing construction projects to effectively improve construction productivity, reduce project cost and time overruns, and sustain construction businesses.

Critical Review and Road Map of Automated Methods for Earthmoving Equipment Productivity Monitoring

Monitoring the productivity of construction equipment would help to improve construction productivity, control cost, and discover potential project issues. However, manual equipment productivity monitoring is labor-intensive and inefficient. In recent years, a large number of studies have been conducted to develop automatic methods for equipment productivity monitoring. Numerous technologies were used to estimate equipment operation time, calculate soil quantity, and analyze influence factors, among others. However, there is no recent review paper focusing on equipment productivity monitoring. This paper provides a comprehensive review of automated methods for earthmoving equipment productivity monitoring. A total of 119 related papers are reviewed and 88 papers are categorized based on the method of collecting productivity-related data. In addition, the benefits and limitations of different methods are compared in detail. Finally, a roadmap is proposed to illustrate a path forward for automatic equipment monitoring and productivity analysis. The review is expected to provide future directions that will support the development of full automation in productivity monitoring of construction equipment.

Circular economy applications in the construction industry: A global scan of trends and opportunities

Construction consumes more than 3 billion tons of raw materials globally each year. Adopting circular economy principles can help reduce waste and save more than $100 billion per year by improving construction productivity. This study's overarching objective was to investigate the state of adoption of circular economy principles in the construction sector. A multiple case study approach was used, and adoption opportunities were investigated in a global scan of 81 companies implementing circular economy principles in the construction industry. A knowledge framework with 33 attributes was developed to classify the companies, and their initiatives were analyzed in terms of overall focus, lifecycle operations, and business operations. These companies were categorized into seven identified business types, and their adoption of nine major circular business models was evaluated. Opportunity gaps and areas for improvement were identified, and steps for accelerating the shift towards a circular economy in construction were suggested. Furthermore, specific opportunities and prospects were discussed for implementing a circular economy in the United States, Canada, and the European construction industries. Notably, this study fills a gap in the literature by providing empirical evidence of the state of adoption of circular economy principles in the construction sector. Presented findings can help both academics and industry practitioners understand the current state of adoption of circular economy principles by construction companies and accelerate steps towards circularity in construction. Furthermore, the present study highlights the current differences between circular economy in theory and practice.

Monitoring the Work Cycles of Earthmoving Excavators in Earthmoving Projects Using UAV Remote Sensing

Monitoring the work cycles of earthmoving excavators is an important aspect of construction productivity assessment. Currently, the most advanced method for the recognition of work cycles is the “Stretching-Bending” Sequential Pattern (SBSP), which is based on fixed-carrier video monitoring (FC-SBSP). However, the application of this method presupposes the availability of preconstructed installation carriers to act as a surveillance camera as well as installed and commissioned surveillance systems that work in tandem with them. Obviously, this method is difficult to apply to projects with no conditions for a monitoring camera installation or which have a short construction time. This highlights the potential application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing, which is flexible and mobile. Unfortunately, few studies have been conducted on the application of UAV remote sensing for the work cycle monitoring of earthmoving excavators. This research is necessary because the use of UAV remote sensing for monitoring the work cycles of earthmoving excavators can improve construction productivity and save time and costs, especially in post-disaster reconstruction projects involving harsh construction environments, and emergency projects with short construction periods. In addition, the challenges posed by UAV shaking may have to be taken into account when using the SBSP for UAV remote sensing. To this end, this study used application experiments in which stabilization processing of UAV video data was performed for UAV shaking. The application experimental results show that the work cycle performance of UAV remote-sensing-based SBSP (UAV-SBSP) for UAV video data was 2.45% and 5.36% lower in terms of precision and recall, respectively, without stabilization processing than after stabilization processing. Comparative experiments were also designed to investigate the applicability of the SBSP oriented toward UAV remote sensing. Comparative experimental results show that the same level of performance was obtained for the recognition of work cycles with the UAV-SBSP as compared with the FC-SBSP, demonstrating the good applicability of this method. Therefore, the results of this study show that UAV remote sensing enables effective monitoring of earthmoving excavator work cycles in construction sites where monitoring cameras are not available for installation, and it can be used as an alternative technology to fixed-carrier video monitoring for onsite proximity monitoring.

Vision–based framework for automatic interpretation of construction workers' hand gestures

Construction robots have been recently developed to improve construction productivity and safety. One of the critical steps to make the robots work with human workers as teams is to provide a user-friendly interface to support their mutual interactions on construction sites. Compared with existing interfaces, hand gestures are easy to use, natural, and intuitive. This paper proposed a novel vision-based framework to capture and interpret the worker's hand gestures as a human-robot interface in construction. The framework consists of three components: worker detection and tracking, recognition queues formulation, and hand gesture recognition. Its effectiveness on the hand gesture recognition was tested with field experiments and achieved the overall precision and recall of 87.0% and 66.7%. Also, a laboratory study was conducted to illustrate the use of the framework to interact with a robotic dump truck. Future work will integrate the proposed framework into robotic construction machines.

Initiatives that enable Singapore contractors to improve construction productivity

PurposeThis study examines the initiatives that would enable contractors in Singapore to improve the level of construction productivity.Design/methodology/approachA two-pronged research method was employed: questionnaire survey with contractors (109 responses received) and in-depth interviews with 12 subject matter experts. The questionnaire covered questions such as the current and future improvement measures.FindingsThe results show that the top three motives for achieving high productivity (increase profitability, on time delivery and enhance corporate competitiveness) are underpinned by profit maximization. Factor analysis revealed several categories of productivity improvement strategies. Among these, only site operations category is under the control of contractors. Other important categories include government's initiatives and design factors.Research limitations/implicationsWhile contractors are the producers of built products, their productivity is very much dependent on other factors and other parties. The long-standing exhortation to contractors to improve productivity is necessary but not a sufficient condition to improve it.Practical implicationsRecommendations are provided for the government, designers, contractors and other stakeholders on what can be done to improve productivity.Originality/valueThis research adds to knowledge by showing that contractors' top motives for high productivity relate to self-seeking behavior to maximize profit. Prior to this study, productivity improvement is considered the responsibility of contractors. This study shows that two other stakeholders also hold the key to productivity improvement – government and designers. Government controls the supply of foreign labor, has the capacity to offer incentives and has the muscle to enact regulations to improve productivity. Consultants' upstream designs must be buildable.

Hallway exploration-inspired guidance: applications in autonomous material transportation in construction sites

Continued attempts have been conducted to improve construction productivity with automatic material transportation robots, yet neither of them has been popularized. The reason is that navigating in highly unstructured and dynamic indoor environments remains a great challenge. Therefore, we present a hallway exploration-inspired guidance approach (HEIGA), which guides an agent to its destination based on a series of directional guidance without the need for self-localization in a global frame. A series of experiments were conducted which prove that fully autonomous material transportation can be realized without being influenced by the complexity or dynamics of real construction sites. We expect this new approach to effectively: (i)free workers from heavy and repetitive material transportation tasks; and (ii) improve construction productivity. In the future, the presented approach will be applied in construction sites considering multi-robot collaboration, aiming at a higher material transportation efficiency.

Using Real-Time Indoor Resource Positioning to Track the Progress of Tasks in Construction Sites

Lean construction methods have demonstrated potential to improve construction productivity. For example, the location-based management system and the last planner system have increased the reliability of planning and control in construction production. However, these benefits are often reduced because of inaccurate manual data collection. To alleviate these problems, technologies for automated monitoring of workers have been developed to identify site events in chaotic environments. This paper aims to investigate whether a Bluetooth low-energy-based real-time indoor positioning system can monitor task progress from workers’ presence. Our findings suggest that the proposed system is a feasible solution for monitoring task-level progress when there are explicit dependencies between tasks. This method could automatically detect task start and finish times and estimate the hours required to complete a task. This enables the measurement of waste hidden inside tasks, which allows for interventions for improving flows and eliminating waste.
