How to bring abstract philosophical concepts and their relations in proximity with everyday, concrete pupils' experience and spontaneous concepts? What factors can effectively and meaningfully mediate between usual perception and experience and abstract philosophical concepts, especially in the initial stages of teaching and learning, when pupils are introduced to philosophical problems? In accordance with these questions, the paper examines the meaning and possibilities of applying iconic tools or visual and graphic representations in the teaching of philosophy as intermediate elements that can connect complex, abstract philosophical concepts and theories with everyday experience and with the domain of phenomena and objects given in the immediate perception. First, the general theoretical foundations are explored, then possible directions of application, then a characteristic and valuable example already designed and adopted in teaching practice, and finally concluding considerations and proposals are made. The paper focuses on two specific groups of iconic tools: geometric (and geometrized) visuals and graphics and comics as a visual-graphic representation: we explore the foundations of their value in teaching and learning. Our conclusion is that iconic tools in teaching philosophy, if they are applied in a pedagogically and psychologically justified manner, if meaningful, relevant and aligned with the objectives of philosophy teaching and curriculum, have a great potential as an important intermediate factor for the gradual movement towards higher levels of abstraction, while preserving the transfer between philosophy and other subjects, as well as between philosophy and pupils' life experiences. In addition, their application can deepen crosscurricular connections, as well as a more intensive integration of teaching philosophy with key competencies and cross-curricular competencies.

Dissecting the molecular dance: c-di-GMP, cAMP-CRP, and VfmH collaboration in pectate lyase regulation for Dickeya dadantii-unveiling the soft rot pathogen's strategy.

Dickeya dadantii is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes soft rot diseases in a variety of plants. This pathogen secretes pectate lyase (Pel) enzymes to degrade the plant cell wall, a process controlled by the bacterial second messenger cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP). VfmH is a Fis-family response regulator of the Vfm quorum sensing system, which has been previously reported to positively regulate pel transcription. Our results demonstrated that VfmH upregulated the production of Pel at low c-di-GMP levels, which was suppressed by c-di-GMP via deleting gene egcpB, encoding a phosphodiesterase that degrades c-di-GMP. Multiple sequence alignments between FleQ, a known c-di-GMP binding protein, and VfmH revealed several potential c-di-GMP binding motifs. We further validated these motifs via single amino acid substitutions. Indeed, derivatives of VfmH, including VfmHR195A, VfmHR279A, and VfmHR344A, abolished the c-di-GMP binding ability and the corresponding regulation in Pel. We found that VfmH exhibited ATPase activity, and this could be hindered by c-di-GMP binding. Interestingly, our results showed that VfmH interacted with CRP, suggesting that the cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling pathway is also involved in the VfmH-mediated Pel regulation. Taken together, our study suggested that D. dadantii amalgamates both c-di-GMP and cAMP signaling networks along with the Vfm quorum sensing pathway to control Pel.IMPORTANCEBacteria respond to environmental changes and adapt to host systems. The response regulator VfmH of the Vfm quorum sensing system regulates a crucial virulence factor, pectate lyase (Pel), in Dickeya dadantii. At high c-di-GMP concentrations, VfmH binds c-di-GMP, resulting in the loss of its activation property in the Pel and virulence regulation in D. dadantii. VfmH binds to c-di-GMP via three conserved arginine residues, and mutations of these residues eliminate the c-di-GMP-related phenotypes of VfmH in Pel synthesis. Our data also show that VfmH interacts with CRP to regulate pelD transcription, thus integrating cyclic AMP and c-di-GMP signaling pathways to control virulence in D. dadantii. We propose that VfmH is an important intermediate factor incorporating quorum sensing and nucleotide signaling pathways for the collective regulation of D. dadantii pathogenesis.

Quantifying Factors Associated with Personal Hygiene as Measured by the qPHAT Methodology: Andilaye Trial, Ethiopia.

Many water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions target improvements in personal hygiene behaviors. Yet measuring personal hygiene behaviors is a challenge due to a lack of reliable, valid, objective, and simple-to-use approaches. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between two types of hygiene outcome measures and their ability to detect relationships between WASH-related behavioral factors and behaviors. We compared hygiene outcomes generated by the Quantitative Personal Hygiene Assessment Tool (qPHAT), which yields objective measures of cleanliness on an 11-point scale, and those generated by conventional, dichotomous indicators of cleanliness. We used cross-sectional data on hygiene outcomes related to facial and hand cleanliness collected during the Andilaye Trial, an impact evaluation of a community-based WASH intervention implemented in Amhara, Ethiopia. We fit multivariable models to examine associations between measures of children's facial and hand cleanliness, via both qPHAT and dichotomous indicators, and 1) household WASH conditions, 2) psychosocial factors, and 3) reported personal hygiene practices. The qPHAT-generated outcomes were able to detect relationships between intermediate behavioral factors and hygiene outcomes that dichotomous indicators were not, including associations with water insecurity and various psychosocial factors. qPHAT-generated outcomes were negatively associated with reported face washing practices, suggesting a bias in reported behaviors. Our study highlights the limitations of reported practices and dichotomous hygiene indicators and indicates that using more quantitative hygiene outcome measures, such as those generated by qPHAT, may reveal important intermediate factors that influence hygiene behavior and support improved monitoring and evaluation of interventions.

Canopy structure: An intermediate factor regulating grassland diversity-function relationships under human disturbances.

Grasslands are one of the largest coupled human-nature terrestrial ecosystems on Earth, and severe anthropogenic-induced grassland ecosystem function declines have been reported recently. Understanding factors influencing grassland ecosystem functions is critical for making sustainable management policies. Canopy structure is an important factor influencing plant growth through mediating within-canopy microclimate (e.g., light, water, and wind), and it is found coordinating tightly with plant species diversity to influence forest ecosystem functions. However, the role of canopy structure in regulating grassland ecosystem functions along with plant species diversity has been rarely investigated. Here, we investigated this problem by collecting field data from 170 field plots distributed along an over 2000km transect across the northern agro-pastoral ecotone of China. Aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and resilience, two indicators of grassland ecosystem functions, were measured from field data and satellite remote sensing data. Terrestrial laser scanning data were collected to measure canopy structure (represented by mean height and canopy cover). Our results showed that plant species diversity was positively correlated to canopy structural traits, and negatively correlated to human activity intensity. Canopy structure was a significant indicator for ANPP and resilience, but their correlations were inconsistent under different human activity intensity levels. Compared to plant species diversity, canopy structural traits were better indicators for grassland ecosystem functions, especially for ANPP. Through structure equation modeling analyses, we found that plant species diversity did not have a direct influence on ANPP under human disturbances. Instead, it had a strong indirect effect on ANPP by altering canopy structural traits. As to resilience, plant species diversity had both a direct positive contribution and an indirect contribution through mediating canopy cover. This study highlights that canopy structure is an important intermediate factor regulating grassland diversity-function relationships under human disturbances, which should be included in future grassland monitoring and management.

Circadian rhythm disorder: a potential inducer of vascular calcification?

Over the past decades, circadian rhythm has drawn a great attention in cardiovascular diseases. The expressions of rhythm genes fluctuate in accordance with the diurnal changes of vascular physiology, which highlights the pivotal effect of vascular clock. Recent researches show that the circadian clock can directly regulate the synthetic and secretory function of endothelial cells and phenotypic switch of vascular smooth muscle cells to adjust vascular relaxation and contraction. Importantly, dysfunction of vascular cells is involved in vascular calcification. Secretion of osteogenic cytokines and calcified vesicles in the vessel, osteogenic phenotype switch of vascular smooth muscle cells are all implicated in the calcification process. Moreover, circadian rhythm disorder can lead to abnormal hormone secretion, oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction, and autophagy, all of which should not be ignored in vascular calcification. Vascular senescence is another pathogenetic mechanism in vascular calcification. Accelerated vascular senescence may act as an important intermediate factor to promote vascular calcification in circadian rhythm disorders. In this review, we elaborate the potential effect of circadian rhythm disorder in vascular calcification and try to provide a new direction in the prevention of vascular calcification.

Historical droughts in the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) of China

Abstract. This study presents a new epistemological analysis of drought chronology through a well-defined methodology for reconstructing past drought series, as well as series of other associated ecological and societal impact variables. Instead of building a grading system based on mixed criteria, this method facilitates transparency in the reconstruction process and enables the statistical examination of all variables when building series. The data for the present study are derived mainly from the REACHES (Reconstructed East Asian Climate Historical Encoded Series) database; however, other archival documentary and index data from independent sources are also applied to understand drought narratives and to cross-check and validate the analysis derived from REACHES. From the time series analysis, six severe drought periods are identified in the Qing dynasty, and then a spatial analysis is performed to demonstrate the spatial distribution of drought and other variables in the six periods, as well as a social network analysis to reveal connections between drought and other ecological and societal variables. Research results clearly illustrate the role of human intervention in influencing the impacts of drought and their societal consequences. Particularly, the correlation between drought and socioeconomic turmoil is not strong; crop failure and famine are important intermediate factors, while ecological factors such as locust and disaster relief measures are all imperative to intervene between crop production and famine. Implications of the study on drought impact are provided, as well as the significance of drought on historical climate reconstruction studies.

Some Aspects of the Control for the Radial Distribution of Burden Material and Gas Flow in the Blast Furnace

The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four ways of energy-saving technology implementation were determined for the control of blast furnace melting based on the data on the burden surface texture and previously unknown regularities of surface layer formation of burden material on the throat of an operating blast furnace with a bell-type charging device. The main idea of the paper is the development of automated control for the radial distribution of burden material and gas flow using actual or predicted surface texture parameters as important intermediate factors that both describe the process and have a significant simultaneous influence on it.

Association between maternal social deprivation and prenatal care utilization: the PreCARE cohort study

BackgroundMaternal social deprivation is associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Inadequate prenatal care utilization (PCU) is likely to be an important intermediate factor. The health care system in France provides essential health services to all pregnant women irrespective of their socioeconomic status. Our aim was to assess the association between maternal social deprivation and PCU.MethodsThe analysis was performed in the database of the multicenter prospective PreCARE cohort study. The population source consisted in all parturient women registered for delivery in 4 university hospital maternity units, Paris, France, from October 2010 to November 2011 (N = 10,419). This analysis selected women with singleton pregnancies that ended after 22 weeks of gestation (N = 9770). The associations between maternal deprivation (four variables first considered separately and then combined as a social deprivation index: social isolation, poor or insecure housing conditions, no work-related household income, and absence of standard health insurance) and inadequate PCU were tested through multivariate logistic regressions also adjusted for immigration characteristics and education level.ResultsAttendance at prenatal care was poor for 23.3% of the study population. Crude relative risks and confidence intervals for inadequate PCU were 1.6 [1.5–1.8], 2.3 [2.1–2.6], and 3.1 [2.8–3.4], for women with a deprivation index of 1, 2, and 3, respectively, compared to women with deprivation index of 0. Each of the four deprivation variables was significantly associated with an increased risk of inadequate PCU. Because of the interaction observed between inadequate PCU and mother’s country of birth, we stratified for the latter before the multivariate analysis. After adjustment for the potential confounders, this social gradient remained for women born in France and North Africa. The prevalence of inadequate PCU among women born in sub-Saharan Africa was 34.7%; the social gradient in this group was attenuated and no longer significant. Other factors independently associated with inadequate PCU were maternal age, recent immigration, and unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.ConclusionSocial deprivation is independently associated with an increased risk of inadequate PCU. Recognition of risk factors is an important step in identifying barriers to PCU and developing measures to overcome them.

Association of depression with pre-diabetes, undiagnosed diabetes, and previously diagnosed diabetes: a meta-analysis.

We performed a meta-analysis to analyze the associations of depression with pre-diabetes (PreDM), undiagnosed diabetes (UDM), and previously diagnosed diabetes (PDM), and whether the association was affected by important study characteristics. We searched relevant articles published in PubMed and EMBASE up to August, 2015. Studies reporting cross-sectional associations of depression with PreDM, UDM, or PDM compared with normal glucose metabolism (NGM) were included. Odds ratios (ORs) were pooled with random-effect and fixed-effect models. Subgroup analyses by sex, study mean age, different degrees of adjustment, publication year, quality score, and depression assessment scales were also performed. Twenty studies were eligible and included in current analysis. Summary estimates showed that compared with NGM individuals, prevalence of depression was moderately increased in PreDM (random-effect odds ratio (OR) 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.19) and UDM (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.02-1.59), and markedly increased in PDM (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.40-2.31). Subgroup analyses showed that the positive association remained only among studies with mean age <60years old but not among those with mean age ≥60years old. Summary estimates of ORs with cardiovascular disease adjustment substantially attenuated the association. Our findings suggested that risk of prevalent depression was gradually increased with the deterioration of glucose metabolism among younger age groups but not among older age groups. Comorbid cardiovascular diseases might be an important intermediate factor underlying the association between depression and diabetes.

Psychosocial work environment factors and weight change: a prospective study among Danish health care workers

BackgroundLifestyle variables may serve as important intermediate factors between psychosocial work environment and health outcomes. Previous studies, focussing on work stress models have shown mixed and weak results in relation to weight change. This study aims to investigate psychosocial factors outside the classical work stress models as potential predictors of change in body mass index (BMI) in a population of health care workers.MethodsA cohort study, with three years follow-up, was conducted among Danish health care workers (3982 women and 152 men). Logistic regression analyses examined change in BMI (more than +/− 2 kg/m2) as predicted by baseline psychosocial work factors (work pace, workload, quality of leadership, influence at work, meaning of work, predictability, commitment, role clarity, and role conflicts) and five covariates (age, cohabitation, physical work demands, type of work position and seniority).ResultsAmong women, high role conflicts predicted weight gain, while high role clarity predicted both weight gain and weight loss. Living alone also predicted weight gain among women, while older age decreased the odds of weight gain. High leadership quality predicted weight loss among men. Associations were generally weak, with the exception of quality of leadership, age, and cohabitation.ConclusionThis study of a single occupational group suggested a few new risk factors for weight change outside the traditional work stress models.

Socioeconomic and Racial/Ethnic Disparity in Americans' Adherence to Federal Dietary Recommendations

Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in obesity and other chronic diseases are constant features of the US population and warrant continuous research on the linkage and causation between social demographic factors and distant health outcomes, and on related interventions. Many believe that the racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparity in dietary intake is an important intermediate factor contributing to the disparities in obesity and other lifestyle-related diseases (1). Kirkpatrick and colleagues (2) provide some new evidence on differences in food group-based dietary intakes across race/ethnicity and income groups in terms of meeting the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) dietary recommendations (3).

Unsafe Feelings Among Teachers

Teachers feeling unsafe in front of their classes tend to show a reduced commitment to their educational task. This can have a negative effect on pupils' performance and may cause behaviour problems. Feelings of unsafety are generally associated with pupils' antisocial behaviour. We examined this proposition and found the correlation between the two factors to be less direct than is generally supposed. Subjective criminality-related factors (subjective victimization risk and own victimization experience) and well-being (including job perception, satisfaction with the pupils) are very important intermediate factors. Measures intended to reduce teachers' feelings of unsafety should, therefore, not focus directly on pupil behaviour but on the situation in which the teacher has to work. More in particular, attention should be paid to the development of a positive image of and a respectful attitude towards young people, to teamwork and teacher support, and to the optimization of conditional factors (class size, work pressure, etc.). The research material was collected via questionnaires completed by 1,432 teachers from 91 schools and secondary analyses of questionnaire data from 4,829 pupils (12 — to 18-year-olds) from the same schools. To complement the questionnaire data, twelve focus groups with teachers and eight with pupils were organised.

Elimination of interleukin 6 attenuates coagulation activation in experimental endotoxemia in chimpanzees.

The role of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the toxic sequelae of sepsis is controversial. To assess the part of IL-6 in inflammatory responses to endotoxin, we investigated eight chimpanzees after either a bolus intravenous injection of Escherichia coli endotoxin (n = 4; 4 ng/kg) or after the same dose of endotoxin with a simultaneous bolus intravenous injection of an anti-IL-6 mAb (30 mg; n = 4). Anti-IL-6 did not affect the induction of the cytokine network (tumor necrosis factor [TNF], soluble TNF receptors types I and II, and IL-8) by endotoxin, nor did it influence the occurrence of a neutrophilic leukocytosis and neutrophil degranulation, as monitored by the measurement of elastase-alpha 1-antitrypsin complexes. In contrast, anti-IL-6 markedly attenuated endotoxin-induced activation of coagulation, monitored with the plasma levels of the prothrombin fragment F1+2 and thrombin-antithrombin III complexes, whereas activation of fibrinolysis, determined with the plasma concentrations of plasmin-alpha 2-antiplasmin complexes, remained unaltered. We conclude that IL-6 does not have a feedback effect on the release of other cytokines after injection of endotoxin, and that it is not involved in endotoxin-induced neutrophilia or neutrophil degranulation. IL-6 is, however, an important intermediate factor in activation of coagulation in low grade endotoxemia in chimpanzees.

Platelet-activating factor antagonist TCV-309 attenuates the induction of the cytokine network in experimental endotoxemia in chimpanzees.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) has been postulated to play a role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Additionally, in vitro studies have revealed tight interactions between PAF and the cytokine network, and PAF is considered to be an important stimulator of neutrophil functions. To assess the intermediate role of PAF in the induction of cytokines and neutrophil degranulation in endotoxemia in vivo, 12 healthy adult chimpanzees were i.v. injected with a bolus dose of Escherichia coli endotoxin (4 ng/kg); four animals received endotoxin alone, whereas the other chimpanzees were infused with the specific and potent PAF antagonist TCV-309 (bolus of 100 micrograms/kg, followed by either 100 micrograms/kg/h (n = 4) or 500 micrograms/kg/h (n = 4) for 5 h). At both doses TCV-309 significantly inhibited the endotoxin-induced rise in cytokine levels. Peak TNF concentrations after injection of endotoxin alone were 366 +/- 96 pg/ml, vs 105 +/- 47 and 115 +/- 56 pg/ml after administration of endotoxin together with the lower or higher dose of TCV-309, respectively (p < 0.05). TCV-309 also reduced the appearance of soluble TNFRs. Maximal levels of the type I soluble TNFR were diminished from 2.53 +/- 0.27 ng/ml (endotoxin alone) to 1.69 +/- 0.36 ng/ml (high dose TCV-309; p < 0.05); peak values of the type II soluble TNFR were diminished from 8.62 +/- 1.19 ng/ml to 5.76 +/- 0.92 ng/ml (p < 0.05). Furthermore, TCV-309 attenuated the endotoxin-induced release of IL-6 (160 +/- 82 pg/ml after endotoxin alone, vs 63 +/- 30 pg/ml in the low dose TCV-309 group (p < 0.05) and 65 +/- 29 pg/ml in the high dose group (p = 0.07) as well as that of IL-8 (279 +/- 168, vs 71 +/- 15 and 46 +/- 17 pg/ml, respectively; both p < 0.05). TCV-309 tended to reduce the endotoxin-provoked rise in serum IL-1R antagonist levels. In contrast, TCV-309 did not affect the neutrophilic leukocytosis elicited by endotoxin, nor did it inhibit endotoxin-induced neutrophil degranulation, as monitored by the plasma levels of elastase-alpha 1-antitrypsin complexes. We conclude that PAF plays a role, either directly or indirectly, in the stimulation of the cytokine network and in the shedding of soluble TNFR in endotoxemia. PAF does not seem to be an important intermediate factor in endotoxin-induced neutrophilia or neutrophil degranulation.
